Recommend Me Some Albums V. Failcaeus
« on: May 04, 2010, 03:01:45 PM »
I'll get this out of the way quick: I am not looking for generic progressive/metal albums. Don't recommend any from these genres unless they're something truly special or I've listed them below.

During these last few weeks I've been getting more and more into the genres of post-rock, indie and hip-hop (odd trio, I know), and I'd like to dive deeper into all of them.

I'd like to know where to go next regarding these artists, and for the ones I already own material from I've listed the albums I have and enjoy from their discography:

Antimatter
Aphex Twin
ASHES dIVIDE
Atmosphere (When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold)
CunninLynguists (A Piece of Strange)
David Bowie
Deadsoul Tribe
Deftones (White Pony)
Devin Townsend & All Related Projects
Explosions In The Sky (The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place)
Frank Zappa
Green Carnation
Incubus
Jedi Mind Tricks (Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell; A History of Violence)
Kaddisfly
Katatonia
Kayo Dot
Meshuggah
Mike Patton & All Related Projects (Own all Faith No More albums and the first Mr. Bungle)
Minus The Bear (Planet Of Ice)
Murder By Death
OuterSpace
Pineapple Thief
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Californication)
Riverside (Second Life Syndrome; it's okay, don't recommend other albums unless they're much better)
Rx Bandits
Scale The Summit
Sigur Ros ( ( ) )
Tech N9ne (K.O.D)
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Receiving End of Sirens
The Snake The Cross The Crown
Unexpect
...Of Sinking Ships

Also feel free to suggest albums from bands other than the ones listed here. Definitely not looking for the usual prog/power metal discussed on the forum, however.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness. Best giant prog metal/doom metal epic you'll ever listen to. It's also notably for being ACTUALLY one song, as opposed to The Incident/Six Degrees/The Whirlwind, where it's more like movements.

Green Carnation - either what Sintheros said, or Blessing in Disguise, which is a great heavy/progressive metal album with basically no weak song. Regardless of what you choose first, you MUST try The Acoustic Verses later, probably the most amazing acoustic album ever recorded.
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance if you're looking for something darker and heavier as a whole, Night is the New Day if something less depressive and with more much calmer songs. After you've tried the two, the masterpiece which is Viva Emptiness. Then, I guess the earlier albums, I haven't heard them myself yet, but they're definitely less accessible (though all of them are liked, so I guess you can't go wrong).
The Pineapple Thief - Tightly Unwound. Excellent and very accessible at the same time. I don't know anyone who would not love this album at the first listen.
Riverside - if you're into something heavier, Anno Domini High Definition. If something calmer, Out of Myself. Both are excellent in their own direction. Either way, leave Rapid Eye Movement as the last album you'll listen to. It's definitely the most difficult to get into, but... worth it. Entirely.

All I can recommend myself.

Incubus - Start with S.C.I.E.N.C.E. It's their most experimental album and has some great jam songs.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - probably one of the top ten most important albums of the 90's, Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Antimatter - Only got Planetary Confinement, but it's amazing. So get it. :D
Katatonia - The Night is the New Day, their latest album.
Riverside - Anno Domini High Defenition, their best imo.

Listening to Light of Day, Day of Darkness right now. Amazing song, doesn't seem like something I'd listen to often though. I'll definitely pick up The Acoustic Verses at some point, I love The Burden Is Mine... Alone.

Will check out Riverside's ADHD, with Second Life Syndrome they seemed to me like a prog band with amazing potential (certainly more than most in the genre) that just didn't quite reach it with that album, but then Nick played a song from that album on his radio show and I became interested in them again.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, checking them all out, keep 'em coming :tup

I pronounce it Ar-KAY-us, either way I have no idea what led me to choose it (it wasn't the Pokemon, that's for sure) and I've wanted to get it changed to Daedalus for awhile now, as that's what I use everywhere else.

Thanks Nic, what's Presto Ballet like?

Unexpect - Definitely go for In a Flesh Aquarium first. It's their best album to date and a true masterpiece. After that, I would recommend the EP _We, Invaders since their first album Utopia is more black metal influenced and not as diversed as those other two. They plan to release their new album somewhere this year so make sure to get your hand on this one as soon as it comes out!

It's an amazing prog band. Really good stuff. I can't find anything that sounds similar to them, so check out their myspace !

And they are opening for DT at the Portland show.

Pineapple Thief.

I'd go with these albums

Abducting The Unicorn--1999--First album and it's a home run
137--2001-- A fantastic follow up
What We Have Sown--2007--Recorded in 8 weeks as a thank you to their old label
Tightly Unwound--2008--The masterpeice.  A gripping ride, musically and lyrically.  A must have.

Buckethead, for whatever mood you feel.

Population Override, Electric Tears, Colma, Acoustic Shards = Chilling out, sleeping.

Albino Slug, Slaughterhouse on the Prairie, Crime Slunk Scene, Decoding the Tomb of Bansheebot = Pure rocking instrumental music.

Inbred Mountain, Bucketheadland 2, Island of Lost Minds = Some of the strangest music you'll ever hear.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

Sigur Ros- Takk...
Devin Townsend-I don't know what you have, but I'd start with Addicted.  Its what got me hooked.  From there, I'd try Ocean Machine and Ki.
RHCP- Blood Sugar Sex Magick
David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust is a great album, so is Hunky Dory.

Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye

GET THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW ITS THE GREATEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine or Option Paralysis

Miss Machine is kinda their 'classic' album, though OP is fucking amazing too.

Also check out:

Gregor Samsa - 55:12

Easily the best post-rock album I've ever heard.

Eisley - Room Noises

Beautiful, beautiful indie rock.

Ok, now, I may seem like I pimp the below two bands out far too often. and I do, but particularly in this case I feel it's appropriate. Not only high quality music, but original...with no real artists to compare them to. I think have pretty much similar taste to you (incl. hiphop, electronic and metal), so I feel that you would be right at home with either of these:

Agalloch  - Ashes Against The Grain

Hard to describe...maybe Post-Metal or Dark Metal. Very cold and dark with beautiful melodies scattered throughout. It's a welcome change to the lack of atmosphere in most metal or the overbearing sound of traditional atmospheric black metal, so this sits perfectly in between.

Ulver - Perdition City

How you are not already into Ulver is beyond me. They are so up your alley that they have reached the end and have already climbed over the wall. Starting originally as a black metal band, then becoming avant-garde then electronic/trip-hop then ambient etc. Perdition City is their best album in my opinion, combining the best of electronic, ambient, jazz and trip-hop in one package. You will not be disappointed  :millahhhh
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Ok Im confused...you DO want things..from artists you've listed...or you..already know all of their stuff?......Because you said no generic prog rock bands....and then there were a couple of suggestions of stuff that didn't appear in y0ur list.

Just clarifying before I throw Karnivool and Wu-Tan out there....
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

For Devin Townsend, I suggest starting with Terria then moving on to Accelerated Evolution or Infinity.  Not that Addicted is bad, but I think it has a definate shelf life to it, and people are just really digging it because it is his most recent; whereas I've had all his other albums longer and they have aged very well.

If you want something more agressive, check out Devin's old band Strapping Young Lad.  Check out Alien and City first.

Terria really takes some time to get into though (or so I've heard, I'm going to give it my first listen today), so does Infinity (IMO, of course).  So I guess it depends if Arceus wants to jump in immediately and swim in instant greatness like Addicted or listen to something like Terria constantly and grow to appreciate it.  And if we are recommending a grower album, Ocean Machine seems like it would be the way to go.

I don't think Terria is hard to get into once you get past the opening track.  I also wouldn't call Addicted "instant greatness", I honestly don't think it's in Devin's top 5 albums (counting SYL material).  Like I said, I think it has a shelf life - for me it was about 2 or 3 months.  That said, I don't think there is a Devin album that fully represents his total spectrum of genius, but I think Terria and Accelerated Evolution come the closest.

These aren't on your list, but seeing what you listen to...

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

Beautiful, soft indie with melodic, chantable hooks and a passionate feel.

Björk - Debut

I won't try to transform you into the fangirl I am, but Björk makes beautiful, at times very fun, electronic music. She is very inspired by Jazz, and it shows. This is her debut album (derp) to get you started, but all of her albums are amazing. She is an acquired taste, I warn you.

You'll also probably like Dredg for some indie rock. Check out their latest.
