Scarsick.  Was this a smart move?

I knew they were a pretty respected band and a lot of you like Daniel.  Was really struggling for something to buy and saw this quite cheap, so I just purchased it, I always wanted to check them out.

Anyway, I have listened through the album once.......very.......interesting.  Is this the style of the band?  Should I look into them more?

Scarsick is a very varied album.  I'm not sure what the musicians here were looking to accomplish.  Flame to the Moth, Kingdom of Loss, Enter Rain and Cribcaged are pretty good.  And I must say, I hate rap, but was really impressed with Spitfall.

Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Get Remedy Lane asap.

Scarsick is okay imo, not one of their best albums but still very cool. It's not really the same as the other albums, but most of the albums are quite unique in style. All of them are awesome though.

Most people would say it was not a good decision, but while I like the album, no, that is not the usual style of the band. Certainly look into the more; it's probably my least favorite of their albums, but I suggest picking up Remedy Lane, as it's their most accessible.

but lol when people say "I hate rap, but I like Scarsick", because 99.9% of the time that just means "I've never tried listening to hip hop"

I've heard a quite bit of hip hop, and I still think it's shit.

I think I've seen Remedy Lane lying around in a couple of stores.  I'll get it next time.

Scarsick.  Was this a smart move?

Wolfenstein, you and I seem to be on the same page very often regarding taste in music so I feel pretty confident suggesting The Perfect Element. Check out Reconciliation, The Perfect Element, and Used on youtube to get a taste since those are three of my favorite tracks from it.

Just checked out Reconciliation and Used.  They were......really excellent.  A lot more exciting than what is found on Scarsick.  Will definetely look for this album also.  Thanks b_f.

Have you got the live DVD??

The live DVD/CD combo is great! Much better starting point than stinky Scarsick.

Unfortunately no but I'll check out the setlist and see if it's got enough older stuff for my liking and probably get it if so. Stay tuned :tup

Setlist.

   1. "Scarsick"
   2. "America"
   3. "Nightmist"
   4. "! (Foreword)"
   5. "Handful of Nothing"
   6. "New Year's Eve"
   7. "Ashes"
   8. "Undertow"
   9. "Brickworks 1 (Parts II-IV)"
  10. "Chain Sling"
  11. "Diffidentia"
  12. "Flame to the Moth"
  13. "Disco Queen"
  14. "Hallelujah"
  15. "Cribcaged"
  16. "Used"

Even though I have only heard Scarsick once, why they would play America and Disco Queen is a bit puzzling, especially if songs like Used is the quality of their older material.

I started from Scarsick. I needed 9 months to fully appreciate it, but it was worth it.

Scarsick is an amazing album in my opinion but you may have the same conclusions. I agree with black_floyd, The Perfect Element is absolutely awesome and where I would recommend you to go next. After you feel you've finished listening to it (probably a month :D), I guess Remedy Lane is the next step. Then... return to Scarsick and we'll see. ;)

And it's hard to talk about "the style of Pain of Salvation" as every single album is entirely different. The only ones that are any close are TPE and RL, but the differences are significant anyway.

No idea why they would play America, but Disco Queen is fucking awesome, especially live.

America on the live album sounds way better than the album version imo. On the album I find it ok, but I definitely don't feel like listening just to _that_ song alone, it's just good for integrity of the album. On Ending Themes it really has more life, and I absolutely love the echo effect in the opening guitar riff.

My dream is Enter Rain live, though. But I doubt it will ever happen.

America and Disco Queen are awesome live. Seen them live 3 times now, and they played Disco Queen in the encore all 3 times  :hat.

It's terrible. It has a few good songs, but when you have mediocre music and spoken word sections ranting about elevators and fast food, you've completely lost me.

Elevators and fast food.  I'll have to read along with the lyrics I think.

Oh, I think I did hear something about breasts on a beach, is this accurate?

Not to mention the Aenima influence. (He says fuck a lot)

Don't be; Scarsick is terrible (IMO), but at the very least is not representative of their main body of work.

Scarsick really isn't PoS at their best (not saying I don't like it). I'd say Remedy Lane/ The Perfect Element would be a better place to start with them.

I disagree.

I think Scarsick is an amazing album. The only weak song is America, IMO.

I must admit I didn't like it much at first, but after a few months I grew to love the album.

PoS are always adapting and exploring new tastes. I'd even go as far to stick Scarsick in my Top 10 albums.

Currently listening to:

Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here *****
Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned **
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées ***1/2
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing *****
Symphony X - The Odyssey ****1/2

I am digging a few songs on the album.  It's not terrible, it's quite original.  Seems like Remedy and Element are the ones to explore.  interesting band to say the least (or should I just say, interesting album)

Go this way: Remedy Lane -> The Perfect Element -> "BE" -> Entropia -> One Hour By the Concrete Lake -> Scarsick

Yes, Scarsick is so easily their worst album.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Not really. It's another new style for them. Very raw sounding and with more memorable melodies than Scarsick.
