Edit: Just to end this, and so the n00bs can finally get it, because being left out is *such* a crime, I will explain the origins and use of Vlasto Day.

....

The reason why Vlasto Day started is unimportant, but what is important is when someone wants to celebrate Vlasto Day we meet it with good vibes and combined celebration, a coming together for the sake of coming together.

The elitism of only a few people understanding it is the exact opposite of coming together.

But, seems like thats all cleared up now that an actual explanation has been posted.  :millahhhh

Yes, it's there.  Nick's explanation was pretty good, so I mostly used that.  I changed the part where he says it is "every" day.  It isn't.  It is any day, but not necessarily every day.  I also added just a bit at the end.

You guys never had that young cousin that tried to hang out with you and the older lot? You had your inside jokes, you had fun when it was only you and the gang. You even started laughing at a new and now recurrent inside joke of yours. Inevitably, this joke was told in front of your family who asked "what's so funny?" -"nothing" you would reply, "it's an inside joke", your family would smile and roll their eyes, letting it slide, and carrying on with the evening. The problem was that your young cousin would get irritable because he wanted to know what this inside joke was. He started asking "what's the joke, what's so funny?" You didn't want to tell him because he wasn't part of the joke. Not satisfied by this, the fucking young cousin kept insisting you and your cousins for an explanation. You began to get annoyed and tried to ignore him. He started nagging at your aunts & uncles, your parents and grand parents, demanding you and your cousins to explain the joke to him so he could feel part of the group. You alleged that it was just a joke between you and your cousins and that he doesn't need to know. He should ignore something he is not a part of. But he kept insisting and insisting. He nagged for so long that he finally ruined the joke.

Are those the sorts of relationships we want to create on DTF?  That sounds like an example of exclusivity; I'm fairly certain the whole point of this forum (and any forum, for that matter), is to build community, to encourage inclusivity.  It really bothers me actually that exclusive groups would not only be formed but fervently defended like this.  There shouldn't be that young cousin I agree, but there shouldn't be that "you and the gang" either; if there is, we should all be the gang.  We're all here in this forum together, so why should we start getting divisive?
I don't want this community to be completely divided. We're all a gang, sure. The emphasis I was trying to give is that people nagged so much for the explanation that they (I think) ruined the joke. That attitude didn't help either.

bosk, you spelled "Vlasto" wrong in the FAQ, just so you know.

It's spelled "Vlato" in your update post

A note on the exclusivity issue: I don't know when Vlasto Day became a holiday.  I just remember joining a few years ago, reading up on inside jokes in the wiki, and played along in the Vlasto Day threads as part of some harmless fun.  Hell I still don't know the origins, and it hasn't gotten in the way of celebrating a fun, stupid joke that I wasn't even around for.  Anyone can join in, especially since explanations for Vlasto Day were posted by plenty of people.  I don't think it promotes any sort of clique or exclusive thinking in any way, its like a while ago when a certain member walked into the Springsteen thread, said that it was "music to torture prisoners with" and then got crap for it.  Its not exclusivity for telling people to fuck off, its called "not appreciating it when someone is just being stupid."

@Silver Tears: the wikis been down for a couple of years now.  That's why I asked if any fogeys had saved it or something.

It was a great thing, and contained much of the lore of our community.  However, it has sadly gone the way of the dodo.

Not to my knowledge.  It was operated by Kyle Brooks, but since it was wiki, it was open and constantly changing.  I doubt that anyone ever had a copy of all the entries.

It's just a day for celebrating. Which I nearly always miss. As I will that one, should it come to pass. I have a feeling there are some secret credentials you have to have in order to be able to declare it though. And no one's thought them out.

Pretty sure we actually had a poster named Vlasto.
Before Vlasto Day.

Though the day wasn't specifically named after him.

Blaspheme.

There is a Vlasto, but he is, at best, an irregular poster, and Vlasto Day is not directly related to him.

I meant the occurrence of Vlasto Day.  As in, it isn't celebrated "whenever Vlasto posts" -  it could be any day.

Well, since you're here, can you shed any light on the original founding of this blessed holiday?  Circumstances, other people involved?  Whose idea was it?
