I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

That is just such a huge gambit of styles that I don't even know what to say.

The differences in styles between Symphony X and Porcupine Tree alone are massive.

Would you be leaning more toward metal in terms of recommendations?

Porcupine Tree - Only have The Incident, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet and Signify.  All very good.
Symphony X - The Odyssey, Divine Wings of Tragedy, V, Paradise Lost.  All albums are amazing
Tool - Aenima, Lateralus.  Essential.
Rush - Depends on your style.  Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Counterparts
Faith No More - King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

It seems like an unrealistically large undertaking to get into all of those bands fully at the same time. I say start with the band you're most in the mood for at this point in time and get into them, and then go from there getting into them one by one. And for the record, Lateralus is my favourite album of all time, so I'd recommend that for Tool.

OP, do not listen to this man.  TFE is regarded by most people as the worst Rush album.  Few good songs, but as a whole  :tdwn  I highly recommend going with any "classic" Rush albums before touching this one.

Sorry man, but you really can't expect someone to understand why Rush are so great with that album alone. :)

Toro, what aspects of Porcupine Tree do you like?
  • If you like psychedelic stuff, go check out any of their first five albums. Up the Downstair is pretty sweet.
  • If you like relatively straightforward rock, check out Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, or In Absentia. In Absentia is my favourite of this group.
  • If you like some modern progressive metal/rock, check out Fear of a Blank Planet or The Incident. Both of these are excellent.

I'd say the Resistance is their most accesible, least for me it was.

For Muse, probably Black Holes and Revelations in my opinion.

Yes, Absolution is considered by many to be their best album, but as a starting point you can't go wrong with Black Holes. Don't forget to get Origin of Symmetry too.  :yarr
