DPP has its moments, but has never grabbed me and I feel it has several shortcomings. Admittedly, I was really a fan of Tarja and the version of Nightwish that had her in it, and to an extent, that is coloring my perception of DPP a bit. But I am fully aware of that bias, and despite it, I still have a few problems with the album:
1. Anette's singing is okay, but nothing spectacular. Granted, the music was completely written and recorded before she joined the band, so it wasn't written with her voice in mind and wasn't tailored to take advantage of her style and her strengths. It is a lot like WDADU with DT. Listening to that album, many might form a negative impression of Charlie Dominicci as a singer. But the problem is, those songs do nothing to showcase his ability and don't fit his style at all. Hearing his solo work, which is written to his strenghts, you can truly appreciate where he is able to shine. Similar with DPP. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: I'm really looking forward to hearing what they write with her in the band. Given how Tuomas writes, I don't see her taking a major role in the writing. But still, the album will be written with her in mind after Tuomas and the band have had the chance to tour extensively with her and see how her voice works.
2. Tarja's not in the band anymore. Get over it, Tuomas. I don't see the need to write songs about her and/or Marcelo, let alone several songs. The lyrical content really drags the album down in that regard.
3. As Adami pointed out, the album sounds too angsty for where Tuomas and the band are in their lives, so it doesn't come across as genuine and sounds forced at times.
