Workout playlists (or music in general)
« on: April 24, 2010, 01:41:30 AM »
As someone who works out frequently, I increase my concentration and mental function through the music I listen to. It boosts my mood.  It also helps relief whatever stress I got going on, and also listening to music can help pump your immune system. In this forum, we can share out workout playlists or music we have playing when we workout.

I've recently been having this playlist on when I work on my chest, back, and arms (a workout that is pretty intense when I do it at least). I try to formulate it with my warm-up, lifitng, and then cool-down/stretch.

1. P.O.D. - Southtown
2. Alter Bridge - Come To Life
3. NIN - 1,000,000
4. Brother Ali - Bitchslap!
4. Sevendust - Corrected
5. Disturbed - Gaurded
6. Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father
7. Atmosphere - Can't Break
8. Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulder
9. Korn - Freak On A Leash
10. Gorillaz - Double Bass
11. Chevelle - Send The Pain Below
12. Beastie Boys - Intergalatic
13. Mastodon - Blood and Thunder
14. Alter Bridge - The End Is Here

I haven't been working out lately, but used to just listen to anything upbeat that would keep me moving. My Chemical Romance was always fun. And running on the boardwalk to Deadwing (minus the really mellow songs) is awesome.
Oh Jackie, always jumping to the most homoerotic possibility.

I fail at working out without suitable music, it has to push me to keep going.. a few songs that are great for this are:

1) Tool - The Pot (the best.. makes me wanna beat the crap outta myself)
1.2) Metallica - Cyanide (the second best, every time I hear this song I wanna jump and start getting physical ;D)
2) Tool - Vicarious
2.2) Symphony X - Domination, Serpent's Kiss, Inferno (Unleash the Fire)
3) Prodigy - Smack my Bitch Up & You'll be Under My Wheels
4) Pendulum - Slam
5) Porcupine Tree - Fear of Blank Planet
5.2) Nine Inch Nails - The Hand that Feeds, Getting Smaller, Survivalism, and the BEST: March of the Pigs
6) SOAD - Kill Rock n Roll
7) SOAD - Highway Song
8) Actually, a lot of SOAD
9) Almost all of RATM's debut album, especially Know Your Enemy
10) Dream Theater - This Dying Soul :heart, As I Am, The Shattered Fortress create winningness on the cross-trainer
11) A few Justice tracks: Stress, Genesis, and Phantom Part 1 & 2 are perfect

*wants to work out now*

Actually yesterday when I hit the gym I listened to Elton John's greatest hits album, I don't really care for what genre I listen to, as long as I'm listening to something.

When I did a cycle challenge at work a while back, I listened to Protest the Hero's "Kezia". My god that got me pumped.

All of Tool's Aenima is the perfect mood and tempo for running. And I actually did listen to Gonna Fly Now whilst running last week, it was amazing.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

What's a workout?
An eating competition at McDonalds.

Rules: The person who forces themselves to eat one of their burgers wins.

I think I sweat out about 5 stone just looking at one of those.

It's been a while since I've actually had a proper work out. But when I did/occasionaly still do, my favourite things to listen to are:

Testament - The Gathering
Devin Townsend - Addicted! (primarily just Addicted!, Universe in a Ball! and Bend it like Bender!)
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
Deicide - Once Upon the Cross
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs for the Damned and the Delirious
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (usually the first 4 tracks)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Obituary - Chopped in Half, Slowly We Rot, Cause of Death
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Cowboys from Hell (title track, Primal Concrete Sledge, Psycho Holiday, Heresy and Cemetery Gates)
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face and I Cum Blood
Strapping Young Lad - Alien and City on shuffle.

Now take that list and mix it up each time. That's basically it.

I felt its length in quite a few places.

When talking music from the Rocky movies, "Eye of the Tiger" is all good and fine, but the "Training Montage" from Rocky IV blows it away. That is a mainstay on my workout playlist.

I go in phases with what songs I use during workouts, but the first three songs and "The Way Home" from Devin Townsend's Addicted, as well as "The Fluke," all always stay, as do several select songs by Muse, Death Cab for Cutie and dredg.  Also, for as laid back as their music often is, Radiohead actually has a handful or two of songs that are great in a workout playlist. The rest varies from week to week.

Bottom line is, rocking, fast-paced songs that aren't too long always work best.  I ain't listening to no long drawn-out epics during a workout (although "The Count of Tuscany" did stay on my playlist for a while last year ;)).  And I get to the gym almost every day, so I am constantly adding different songs and taking a few off.

Every time Coheed and Cambria's Gravemakers and Gunslingers comes on I automatically start doing pushups. It's some kind of psycho-physio weird thing.
