I knew once I heard about this tour that I was gonna have to see the show, especially since I missed other opportunities to see Roger Waters. However, I got the ticket and made the 2 1/2 hour drive to Omaha on Tuesday, and it was well worth it. The technology used for the multi-media show was incredible, as they were able to project images on specific bricks. Thematically, the show was a bit scattered, as it blended between the personal and the political, but that's not all that surprising. The one jarring thing was the occasional digs at capitalism, particularly in Empty Spaces. I say jarring because like so many other major artists these days, the tickets were quite expensive. I payed $70 for balcony seats, and the people on the floor probably paid close to $200. Beyond the videos, we got the usual set of props and tricks from Roger, including an exploding plane, a floating pig, and a handful of gigantic inflatable characters from the album. But it was the images that really made the experience worth it.
As for the music, it was pretty solid, although at times the band could have played with a bit more passion. As a result, a few songs such as Empty Spaces, Young Lust and Hey You didn't quite pack the same emotional wallop as they did on the album. But for much of the night, the band was on, with highlights being Comfortably Numb (of course), The Last Few Bricks (a transition b/w Another Brick 3 and Goodbye Cruel World), Don't Leave Me Now and The Trial. I'm also not particularly keen on Outside the Wall as a closer, as it's just a bit too tame. Perhaps that would have been a good spot to include another Floyd tune as an encore, but I'm not sure which would would be appropriate. Perhaps Wish You Were Here.
All in all, an excellent show with a great blend of spectacle and music. If you get the chance to see this show, please take it.
