DT one-off club shows in June/July
« on: April 08, 2010, 03:58:50 PM »
Just got this from MP.com  :omg:

Dream Theater will be doing a few select headlining shows on some of the days off throughout the Iron Maiden tour.

Please note these will not be traditional DT shows in terms of production...as it is in the midst of the Maiden tour, we are not carrying our usual lighting and video show...so instead these will be small intimate club shows...just like the good(?) 'ol days!

So come sweat it out with us.....

June 21, Roseland Theater, Portland, OR (Opening Act TBA)  - On sale 4/23/10

July 2, Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH - On sale 4/24/10
Special Guests: BEATALLICA

July 10, Palladium, Worcester, MA - On sale 4/16/10
Special Guests: CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED
(featuring Richard Christy and Ripper Owens)

How so?  You mean before this announcement was made, there were zero DT shows scheduled in your town, and now after the announcement, there are now similarly...zero shows scheduled?  Yeah, sounds like a huge net loss for you.  :justjen

Damn, Portland, OR is a managable couple hours' drive away, but I'd have to leave work early. So tempted.... curious what a ticket would cost since Maiden/DT ate up my concert budget for this year. Damn, that concert is the next day. That could be a back-to-back overload of music awesomeness.

Do you think they will play any sort of special setlists considering its a different type of show?

An entire album?
Mostly older stuff?

Even with the clout DT carries, I think the fact that they are a supporting act for Maiden means Maiden's management worked out the tour schedule with their promoters.  So even though DT is doing some one-off headlining dates on days off, their schedule is going to necessarily be dictated by the Maiden tour.  I just don't think it's realistic to expect that they would have traveled far from any place they were already going to be.  I'm not trying to bust your chops over it, but I'm just saying that bands don't normally do that, so it isn't really something that should be expected of DT.

Pretty decent-sized actually. Maybe a bit smaller than the Orpheum.

I liked the idea of a smaller, most personal venue, but I also like the idea of not having to fight for (or pay high price) for a few seats

I don't.  For one thing, there's nothing wrong, in and of itself with playing clubs.  Lots of big name bands do.  Second, this is doen as a special treat for the fans in a few select cities, which is completely different than booking an entire club tour.  Lots of bands than can sell out bigger venues do occasional intimate "fan appreciation"-type shows as a way to connect with fans on a different level.

Nice!!! Hoping for a NY, NJ, or PA show here!! Opening act, Ideosphere? lol
Contractually, we are not able to play headlining dates in close proximity to the Maiden/DT shows....

BTW, that is not Maiden being difficult...it's actually standard industry touring protocol...it was the same when Zappa or Opeth did one-offs from Progressive Nation....

hmmm I wonder what constitutes 'close proximity'. They're not really playing a show in LA on the Maiden tour, maybe they'll do another club show there *pleaseohpleaseohplease*

This.  For example, U2 routinely sells out stadiums all over the world, but they played a couple of club dates not too long ago.

Hopefully, they will stretch themselves a little as far as the setlist on the club shows.

Exactly.

Another good example - 3 years ago Paul McCartney played a show at the Highline Ballroom in NYC, which has a capacity of 700.
