Interesting analogy, but I don't necessarily agree with it entirely. Yes, it is a like a ride with ups and downs, but the downs are still pretty "up," so to speak. 16 tracks and not a single weak link.

This is the first arcade fire album i've purchased and I am really enjoying it. I love the 80's vibe and the the flow of the album. Great stuff!

Bumping this thread to say that I'm just watching a recording of the MSG live stream right now. Rococco is damn hypnotizing. Didn't like it at first, but it's a really neat track.

Looks like Arcade Fire is doing two shows in Chicago in late April. The aggravating thing about this is, you have to figure that they will be doing other shows in the States around the same time, but what happened to announcing them all at the same time? With the Chicago shows already on sale, they are likely to sell out fast, which blows for someone like me, who would consider making the trip up there to see them, but not if they are gonna come here (but just haven't announced it yet). Given the high ticket demand, I guess we could get tickets for the Chicago show, and then sell if them if they do end up coming to St. Louis, but that is still an annoying way to handle it. Grrrrrr...

I think they were generally shocked that they won. The Grammys stink, but that was cool to see (I only tuned in to see them play).

As for their performances, "Month of May" was a trainwreck (too loud and all of the lights were annoying and distracting), but "Ready to Start" was good. Shoulda sent everyone home with "Sprawl II," though.

I was shocked to hear Arcade Fire won the biggest award of the night-- I never thought The Grammies would actually recognize a truly sophisticated, adventurous, and thoughtful concept album like The Suburbs, when they have a history of honoring simple mainstream teen-pop garbage like Katy Perry. You could tell Barbara Streisand hadn't even prepared to say those words, "Arcade Fire-The Suburbs."
I think Month of May was a pretty good choice and I actually liked the intense strobes. The only thing that bothered me was how I could barely hear Regine's vocals. But I agree, Sprawl II would have been better

The big mistake all of those people are making is thinking that the Grammys mean anything. They don't. Sure, it is cool to see a band we like win, especially the biggie like Album of the Year, but it ultimately doesn't mean a damn thing.

Eh, like that article posted in the PT thread said, the Grammys just promote the same very small subset of music that's out there. Maybe they decided to make it an upset, or maybe they actually thought The Suburbs was the best album, who knows, but normally that award would have been going to Taylor Swift or someone of that sort. I don't think the grammys have any real cultural significance when only ten bands get mentioned across several categories.

Of course, award shows are pointless anyways, but its nice to see a band I like get even more mainstream recognition. Unfortunately, they're too cool for me to listen to them now.

I'm just talking about the fact that they clearly mean something to the performers nominated and the majority of the people who tune in to watch the show.

If there's one thing I've learned in the past few years is that you should never write off a band because of whatever silly fans they have. Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten into Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Coheed & Cambria, Genesis, Marillion, Tool, etc. etc. etc...

@Antigoon: Oh no doubt they mean something to those people. I kinda expanded "cultural significance" to mean "everybody," which probably isn't the case.
