24. Fear of a Blank Planet - (Fear of a Blank Planet)

This may be a crazy wild theory, but I don't think PT getting signed by Roadrunner (only for Europe with that album) had any influence on what they did with the music.

Here's another crazy wild theory: you suffer from brain damage if you think this is in the top 25.  :-*

I didn't think anybody thought that.  Zantera must be having a brain cramp today.

RR is 95% heavy bands (of different kinds...) so even though I don't agree, I can see his point, more or less.

Says the one claiming My Ashes is worse than Blackest Eyes.

sky, true.

And I agree with you about "Fear..."; good song, but not that good.

Oh, and "What Happens Now?" is awesome and definitely deserving of a top 25 spot. :tup :tup

Darkes, just because RR is mostly heavy bands doesn't mean PT did anything different with their sound.  They had already gone a bit harder/a bit heavy two albums before they signed with RR.  Remember, correlation does not imply causation. :)

Well, I wouldn't say "My Ashes" is worse than "Blackest Eyes," just less good.  It is certainly worse than "Heartattack" through, and all three of those songs kick FOABP to a pulp :D

I know it had no influence, and don't agree with any RR-related conspiracy theories. But I can see the cause of his reasoning.

Heartattack in a Layby - yes. Blackest Eyes is so pale compared to Fear of a Blank Planet it's almost transparent.

I will never understand why people seem to think FOABP is one of the top two songs from that album, especially when "Way Out of Here" gets kicked out early in the survivors...

Oh, no, I find it the fourth song on the album. And that's the proof that it's one of the most awesome albums ever created. :) Anesthetize followed closely by Way Out of Here has almost no competition.

The 4th best song on every other PT studio album, except the first one, is better than "Fear of a Blank Planet," IMO. :)

Anyone else like me in that Anesthetize gets really boring for the last 3rd of the song. It's like 5-6 minutes too long.

Coming with the 2 other songs now, doing this 3.40 a.m isn't a very good idea. :P
Well, i didn't mean that PT changed their sound because of the label, but i think it had a certain impact anyways.
Maybe certain 'things' where already clear when they signed, cause as Darkes7 said, the majority of bands there are heavy.
Anyhow, the other 2...

22. Halo - (Deadwing)
Another of their most recognizable and most overplayed songs, yet... this one never seems to wear me down.
It's as great now as when i heard it the first time, and it's a grower when it's played live.
I really like the intro, the bass-line and the drumming... the intro gets more 'life' when being performed live, and the extended intro just makes it better.
The subtle guitars are really cool as well, and after that the song just takes off.
Lyrics aren't mind-blowing, but it's really cool how they use the screens for this song.
Chorus is outstanding, and my favorite part is the part JW sings, "Cause i got a halo 'round my head".

21. Russia on Ice - (Lightbulb Sun)
The 'beast' of the album, and together with Hatesong it makes the experimental-side of it.
This song can be divided into 2 different parts, first part is weird/dark and a bit ballad-ish, meanwhile the second half is experimental.
Overall the song offers 13 minutes of fantastic music, and several parts that makes you go: " :omg:"
Chorus is great as well, typical 'sing-along-to'.
"I see the whole thing come down, i burn it to the ground.."

That's actually 2 albums we haven't had represented in the list yet, if im not mistaken. :)

Russia on Ice! That's a must on every list :D Halo is fine too. (I hope you still have a place for Lazarus, though...)

Anyone else like me in that Anesthetize gets really boring for the last 3rd of the song. It's like 5-6 minutes too long.
It's just as hypnotically awesome as the first part. Totally different dimension.

The 4th best song on every other PT studio album, except the first one, is better than "Fear of a Blank Planet," IMO. :)
Well, imo FOABP is an album of 2 masterpieces and 4 great songs, flowing better than almost every album ever recorded. You don't beat that easily.

Finally some Lightbulb Sun. I hope to see more from it.

It's not quite as exciting as the two first parts but I still do like it a lot.

Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?

'FoaBP' (the song) is a very catchy, immediately awesome song. I remember I couldn't get enough of it when it came out. It sounded like everything I liked about PT in one song.

Nowadays, it's hardly one of my favorites. But the 6/8 part at the end never gets old (You don't try to be liked, you don't mind..).

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

I probably like half of the songs on LS, more than it, but "Russia on Ice" would still be a borderline top 20 song for me.  That's because Lightbulb Sun is their BEST record to date.

Not so much on either point.

On the list: Good spot for Russia on Ice, I've actually had it stuck in my head all day today.  I wouldn't put Halo that high (maybe not even in the top 50, who knows?) but its definitely good, its better live, IMO.

I dunno mate, I just think the song is totally awesome from start to finish.

I've actually grown to like it more over the past few months. Number 1 for me right now, but there's 4 or 5 that are most certainly up there.

Which song then?

For me, the song does a bit of everything. It's essentially everything i'd want in an 18 minute prog/rock masterpiece.

I don't think you can have a definitive PT song, they've covered way too much ground over the years to really have one. Definitive maybe for their newest sound/era/whatever, but not for the band as a whole.
