I didn't mean that Waver and Rider themselves were BL, those were separate points. There is a fairly large segment of fandom that sees more than friendship between then, however (though that segment of fandom can find that pretty much anywhere).

Originally got into anime through One Piece. Still my favourite. Then watched Attack on Titan, Claymore, started on Cowboy Bebop, finished Code Geass and planning to start Fullmetal Alchemist+Fate/Zero.

The most entertaining of them all is Attack on Titan, though. Even though I pretty much knew most of the early plot twists.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is one of the best shounen out there. If you plan to watch both at some point, watch FMA 2003 first. If you only want to watch one, go with Brotherhood.

The absolute best introduction to the Fate universe is through the original Fate/Stay Night visual novel. However, it is really long and poorly paced (in other words, I found most of its runtime to be boring. Fate and Unlimited Blade Works take a lot of patience to get to the good parts, though Heaven's Feel is consistently great). So, I understand if you do not want to start there. Of the existing anime, Zero is my recommended starting point. It works fairly well as a stand alone series until close to the end, where you will need knowledge of the VN in order to understand some of the events. From there, you can move on to ufotable's Unlimited Blade Works and the upcoming Heaven's Feel movie(s). Don't bother with any of Deen's Fate adaptations.

Both of those series are great picks.  :tup

One of my favorite animes ever. I had the pleasure of watching it air in Japan every week due to the wonders of the Internet. I still remember some of the more... out there commercials that I saw during the commercial breaks for each episode.

Also, speaking of anime, I just got back from the theater and saw Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F on the big screen. It was great.

I went with a few friends, all of whom are huge fans of the series, to see it tonight. I don't really care for the DB franchise; I've tried to get into it on multiple occassions, but am always turned off within a few episodes. This movie is a perfect example of that. It contains just about every single one of my writing pet peeves, has so many jarring tonal juxtapositions that it is impossible to take seriously, and the dub is awful. It was, at best, average from an entertainment standpoint, and completely fails critically. Dragon Ball just is not for me.

Seriously. Ragyo did a pretty solid job at taking the "Worst Parent in Anime History" Award away from Mr. Ikari.

Satsuki was the best character in the show, btw. Just throwing that out there.

No, but she did use both of her daughters for inhumane experiments as infants (Ryuko as a newborn, even) and then proceeded to dump Ryuko's "corpse" down into the trashcan after assuming she'd died. That's on the same level as what you're referencing, imo.

NGE and KLK do have some similarities as far as the plot is concerned, but they are vastly different both thematically and tonally, which contribute much more to a story's identity than its plot. Gurren Lagann is a better analogue than NGE.

The reference to Shou Tucker was more of a messed up joke than anything else. But when we are on the topic of horrible anime parents, the entire society depicted in Shinsekai Yori deserves a mention. Though they do not score as high in pure cruelty, I find their actions scarier due to their realistic motivations. It is a relatively unknown series, though, so I do not know if anyone else here has seen it.

I wouldn't say there are only 'some' similarities regarding the actual plot:

Protagonist has one dead parent and one abusive estranged one
Abusive estranged parent makes a suit out of aliens the protagonist uses to fight
Secretly the abusive estranged parent is trying to use the aliens to create a collective consciousness (pretty sure this is what Ragyo wanted, maybe I misremember)
The suit is sentient (because it is made out of aliens)
The suit has some aspect of the dead parent (Unit 001 is Yui Ikari's consciousness or soul or whatever, Senketsu is clearly meant to look like Ryuko's father)
There's a part where both Shinji and Ryuko not only get all bummed out and try to leave the whole thing behind, both also have scenes where they lose control over the suit (and I think both injure or at least come close to injuring someone they care about? I remember NGE much better than KLK)
KLK even has its version of Mass Production Units when they start putting life fibers in everyone's clothes

Certainly NGE is more serious and has a much darker tone, but the major plot points are pretty much the same. It's not like Lain/Madoka which (spoilers) just sort of end the same way.

I understand. Nowadays, my interest in Dragon Ball is mainly due to nostalgia so i still appreciate even if i can see it's not good as i think it was when i was a kid. Besides, the Brazilian dub is quite amazing and funny.

So I watched Nichijou.  Not sure how to describe it, but it was amazing.

I'm currently about halfway through this, and it is great. Loving it so far.

Edit: And I now just finished Yuri Kuma Arashi. Ikuhara really is God, and this further cemented his place as my favorite anime director. I love his style, and while YKA is easily the weakest of his three series, it is still worth watching because of it.

Talkin' about Nichijou...

What is this, 2011? Get with the times guys.

Though seriously they need to make more of that show.

And considering how popular Azumanga Daioh was how have they not made a Yotsuba&! anime?

I watched a few movies on Sunday (had nothing better to do), Colorful and Summer Wars.

Both were good.  I preferred Summer Wars to Colorful but the stories of both were captivating.

Someone hasn't been watching Owarimonogatari.

Aside from its kick-ass soundtrack, I've found OPM to be rather average so far. It is good enough that I'll watch to the end, but it is not nearly great enough for me to consider it on the same level as my favorites. I like the show's self awareness, which single handedly elevates it above similar shows, but the only character that stands out is Saitama. The plot has been a boring monster of the week affair so far, though the most recent episode is hopefully an indication of things to come. Overall, its good, but nothing special.

Unless some hidden gem is airing this season, Non Non Biyori Repeat will be my uncontested pick for Anime of the Year.

So Bakemonogatari is one of my favorite animes of all time, and I was really disappointed with Nisemonogatari, and ultimately I did not end up watching Monogatari Series Second Season when it aired.

Recently someone assured me that it is much better than Nisemonogatari, so I decided to give it a try.

And so I just finished the Nadeko Medusa arc.

Wait a minute; your entire DTF profile is based on Monogatari, and you never watched Second Season? Well, I'm not one to talk here; I still haven't finished LoGH...

I liked Bake a lot, but SS is easily my favorite part of the series. It has so many great arcs. The currently airing Owarimonogatari is pretty good as well.

Like I said, I sorta lost faith in the series after the fanservice clusterfuck that was Nisemonogatari. I'm really glad it's gone back to form with Second Season.

To quote myself on the problem with Nisemonogatari:

I liked Nise, but only because I adjusted my expectations beforehand. If I have gone in expecting more Bake, I would have been disappointed. That has more to do with the changed story direction than the increased fanservice, though.

Speaking of which, the fanservice wasn't that much worse in Nise. Aside from the infamous episode 8 and a few other sections, Nise rarely went further than, let's say, Nadeko Snake or Tsubasa Cat.

As someone who generally dislikes fanservice except for when it contributes to characterization, I didn't have many issues with the way it was handled in any part of Monogatari. Even Nise or Tsuki.

Last time I watched Nise was when it aired, so maybe there is some anti-nostalgia goggles going on here, I just remember being really unimpressed with it.

Second Season has been a lot better so far and Nadeko Medusa may be my favorite arc of the whole series so far. I look forward to seeing how these events impact things going forward.

Also I really hope the "Owari" part of Owarimonogatari doesn't mean this will be the last anime. Apparently there are only two episodes left and I'll be pretty surprised if they can answer all of my questions by then.
