Guys, is there anything good this season that isn't Kill La Kill? I'm going to watch that eventually, but I'm in the mood for something non-actiony for right now.

KLK already ended, bro. And yes, there is: new season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure! :biggrin :hefdaddy Feel the hype, man! FEEL. THE. HYPE.

Besides Jojo there's a new season of Mushishi, and if you're in the mood for catching up on almost 300 episodes, Hunter x Hunter is excellent :lol

There are a lot of other things I've heard good things about but haven't gotten around to watching.

Mushishi is the culmination of all things mellow and beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous music too. I'm loving S2 so far and S1 is one of my favorite anime adaptations of ALL THE TIMES.

Totally came out of left field for me, I pretty much came when I saw it up on CR.

how is 127 almost 300 episodes? :P

No Game No Life is easily my favorite show this season so far.

Because for some reason I thought there were way more episodes than there are :lol

A buddy of mine is showing me Sword Art Online, I'm enjoying it so far.

I think "so far" are the key words here. :P

But who knows! you might like it more than I did. Such a waste of a good concept if you ask me.

On the subject of Hunter x Hunter, since there are only 127 episodes you have even more reason to watch it!

Ohhhh Sword Art... I'll just say this: Don't expect it to end as fantastically as it began, Gen. I still love it and really enjoyed every moment, but it was a bit anticlimactic.. That's all I'll say. Still among my favorite though. That first episode, at the end where he's screaming, running towards the enemy... SUCH FEELS. The manga is so much better though, I think. Then again there are very, very few anime adaptations of manga that I like more than the manga. Most of the time my favorite anime are standalone (COMPLEXES LOLLLLLLLLOOOOL).

One of these days I'll actually finish Ghost in the Shell (the movie).  I've tried watching it twice but each time I've fallen asleep halfway through.

Bump and excuse the double post.

Just finished Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.  This was a very rewarding show.  The music, the story, the developed characters made this (seasons 1 and 2) a very good show.  I remember Genowyn posting about this before and he was right.  Now, do i go into the OVAs or leave it after just watching the two TV seasons?

I'm having an anime crisis. I tried K-On! last Sunday and stayed on it for 2 episodes. I lasted 5 minutes into Kill La Kill! after that (nothing really against the anime; I was in the mood for a slice of life, not action). I tried Nisekoi on Friday and stayed on it 2 episodes. I tried Inari Konkon yesterday and couldn't even stay with it for the first episode. And I mean these were fairly highly rated anime, so is it just me? Or are slice of life anime really becoming such clichéfests that I can no longer stand them?

Slice of life is a genre difficult to pull off because the genre itself is so reliant on cliches. That's the way it's been for a lot of anime genres in fact.

Try you Clannad if you haven't already. It's not ground-breaking or tries to do anything radically different, but its strength lies in its stunning execution.

Already done, and I have to be honest, my opinion of it has changed for the worse over the years. And I agree with what you said about slice of life, but that also seems to be a growing problem in anime in general; I'm not sure if it's really so specific to slice of life.

I don't know if Toradora! and Girl Friends just spoiled me or what. I was bored by Love Com and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Evergreen is pretty good, Golden Time was meh (both manga and anime), and From Up on Poppy Hill is OK. Although hey, if Kamichu! counts, that was really well done.

Toradora is not what I would describe as a slice of life show.

If you want some outrageously funny slice of life check out Watashi ga Motenai no wa dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui, or WataMote, a slice of life show about an awkward, unpopular geeky girl which is like the Louie of anime.

Or if you want a classic, there's always Azumanga Daioh (if for some reason you have not seen this yet)

What would you call Toradora? I realize slice of life is typically more aimless.

I don't know, drama? Romance? Slice of life are also usually based on 4koma, Toradora was a series of novels.

I've started watching Non Non Biyori, which is about a bunch of girls who live in the country side, and it's a really chilled show, and also Cross Game, which as far as I can tell from the four or five episodes I've seen so far, is about a dude and baseball.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Manga review: https://hoppedonpop.com/2014/07/13/girl-friends-manga/

In other news, I picked up a great manga called Bonnouji. Very funny stuff. I also am going to reattempt watching Honey and Clover.

Lots of stuff this season:

Watching so far:
SAO II
Tokyo Ghoul
Aldnoah.Zero (Urobuchi Gen. Yuki Kajiura music.)

Downloaded but have yet to watch:
Tokyo ESP
Psycho Pass Extended Edition (re-edit of Psycho-pass as 11 44-minute episodes instead of 22 22-minute ones, plus new content leading up to second season)
Persona 4 The Golden Animation (I have no idea if this will even be worth watching)

Not my style of show really but if you're into/don't mind BL there's DRAMAtical Murder, which will probably be good because Urobuchi Gen.

And of course Hunter x Hunter and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders continue. Hunter has recently concluded the Chimera Ant arc (which was great) and moved into a new one. Good time to catch up.

Has anyone seen the trailer for the new movie Lucy?

Looks to me like Hollywood is going to anime for its ideas again, this time from Elfen Lied. :lol

Obviously there are some superficial changes (here her powers come from drugs, not from a mutation), but in the trailers the say things like "She's the next step of human evolution. I don't know if humanity is ready for her." The last shot of the trailer I saw shows her fighting a bunch of armed guards with her powers, very similar to the opening sequence of Elfen Lied (sadly, though, Scarlett Johansson does not appear to be nude in this scene :lol). And they didn't even bother to change her name.

I almost have enough for a Cracked article called something like "5 Hollywood Films You Didn't Know Were Based on Classic Anime"

Kimba the White Lion - The Lion King
Perfect Blue - Black Swan  (Arronofsky also lifts a scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream)
Paprika - Inception (maybe? Pretty tenuous connection, superficial. Better options hopefully surface)
And now this.

Well I'd say The Lion King is more based on Hamlet than anything else. :lol

And I really don't have any high hopes for Lucy. Truth be told it looks pretty awful and I physically cringed when I heard the whole "humans only use 20% of their brains" line.

Making sure this doesn't derail the purpose of this thread, I've started re-watching YuYu Hakusho since I recently remembered I had the entire first season on DVD. :lol First time I've fully and seriously watched it since I was a kid. Good shit.

Perfect Blue - Black Swan  (Arronofsky also lifts a scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream)

Didn't Aronofsky buy the rights to Perfect Blue to use that bathtub scene?

Luckily they haven't remade Akira in live action yet.

He bought the rights to Perfect Blue so he wouldn't get sued for Black Swan, not for the bathtub scene in Requiem.

Recently I went and watched the entire Puella Magi Madoka Magica series in one sitting...holy f***ing s**t.

I was watching this with a friend of mine who suggested it to me and I was like skeptical at first and said to her "You really think I'd like this?" to which she replied "The image that is before you is misleading you" She wasn't kidding, I expected something light hearted and feel good, but instead I got something incredibly deep and emotional. Great series, although I'd probably need to watch it several more times to really appreciate it as much as those who've had. 9/10.

So, I haven't really watched any animes since DBZ ended it's original run on Toonami.

On Friday, a friend of mine literally sat me down and made me watch the first episode of Attack on Titan... holy shit did I loved that! Literally had to drag myself away from Netflix to sleep that night and ended all the episodes the next day.

Since watching that awaken my curiosity for animes again, I went ahead and started Death Note and holy shit am I loving it! Almost done with it!
