The Best of Times
« on: March 20, 2010, 04:27:06 PM »
So, this song is definitely up in my top 5 or 10 favorite Dream Theater songs.  Due to how personal a song it is to Mike, does anyone think this song will ever be played live?  If they were playing The Garden under any other circumstances (not opening for IM), I could see him putting it in the setlist in honor of his dad.  Kind of like a "Look, Dad!  We made it!" moment.

I wish they will someday play it, and I think they most likely will. I remember Mike saying they wouldn't play it on this tour because this song is too emotional for him. But I think it's safe to say they will someday play it and it may be on the next DVD.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Beautiful song, in my opinion the only song in history to fully capture the feel of "nostalgia" , bad because we lost something, but also good for all thatīs gone. I really hope they play it live on day, it will be quite a moment in "DT history" when they do it.

One of Petrucci's greatest solos.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

It is a fantastic solo.  He really went to town on this one.

Great song, I might like Mike's version more than the one that made BCSL, just because theres so much emotion in it.

It would be cool to have all of them sing, either together, or have certain people do certain parts; like Mike doing the more sincere, emotional parts (inb4thewholesong), and James doing the more challenging vocals, and have John do whatever's left.

I'd rather it just be Mike and James trading off vocals. John can't sing that well, and his Wither demo was plagued with autotune. Plus, it wouldn't make much sense for him to sing this song anyways.

Now that I think about it, I guess that would make more sense and be better.

ok...now, let us review what we have accomplished in this thread.
next tour will consist of Mike and James singing Best of Times, but MP will be particularly emotional
birch boy will let them in on our novel idea.

thread may now be locked

This was actually the first thing I thought of when I heard the song title.
"Once he had forests and mountains that were only his - listening to him. Once he would run through the summer days catching memories for ages to come. Now he is dressing this naked floor with his flesh and blood, and time passes by. His trade of pain might just have lead him to deal with consequence for some change as time passes by"

Indeed.  When they start playing it live, they better do a show in NC to do so.  I'd drive to Asheville again to hear that song.  Its the best on BC&SL.

I must be in the minority of people that don't care for the song.  Musically, it does nothing for me.  It gets off to a dull start and by the times it finally kicks it up a notch, it's already lost me.

A Nightmare to Remember is the most overrated song since Scarred.  That last third of the song is pretty boring.

The Count of Tuscany has some of the best music out of all the post 6DoiT output, but JP's solo and MP's lyrics beat the whole of TCOT for me.  TCOT is in a solid second place though.

I just feel liike the song is a snoozefest.  The opening piano tries too hard to sound emotional instead of just being genuinely emotional.  Idk if that makes sense.
