Any fans of Tobias' band.  Check out the new vid featuring Klaus from Scorpions.  At this point in time, I really am a diehard melodic/AOR fan, but this song is really not doing anything for me.

Let's see what the rest of the album/s have in store!!

Is Jorn back on it?
That's really all that matters to me.

Looking forward to it, I like Avantasia a lot.

At first I thought you were talking about the singer with the " i'm outta love, set me free, put me out of my misery"  song but I was wrong.

I must say Jorn was by far the standout on THe Scarecrow.  His presence on a few tracks brought the average of the album way up.

Funny how Tobias is having a Battle between Russell and Jorn when they have already done two whole albums together and a third is coming (Allen/Lande that is.  The mastermind of course behind these albums is Magnus Karlsson)

Nevertheless, hopefully the rest of the albums are better than this one song.

Tobias is generic, and I'm not the biggest power metal fan, but any song with Jorn Lande is sure to be awesome. The Scarecrow's title track was epic.

And a song described as Jorn Lande vs. Russel Allen, the two best vocalists in power metal (alongside Roy Khan and Hansi, of course)? Count me in.

You should check out the Allen/Lande albums.  The Battle and the Revenge.  It's more melodic pop rock, but class tunes all the way.

Oh, and the Scarecrow was by far the best track on that album, because of Jorn.

I consider Vain Glory Opera as Edguy's best album, and it still seems kind of pale in front of "The Metal Opera 1 & 2" IMO.

Theatre of Salvation and Mandrake are classic power metal for me, but Hellfire & Rocket Ride are a bit  :-\ And Tinnitus Sanctus is just pretty great.

Metal Opera + The Scarecrow however, is just win all round.

The only Edguy album I've heard/have is Tears of A Mandrake, and it's good, sometimes I grow bored of it, others I slightly rock out to it. Not bad though. Now I'm excited to listen to Avantasia if you guys say they're far superior.

Superior is a very subjective word. For a more objective point of view, I would say Avantasia is far more epic than Edguy.  :D

Their 3 albums are incredible. You can't go wrong with them, just have in mind that The Scarecrow is very different from the two Metal Operas.

For all you Jorn fans, I've just checked Wikipedia and according to it Jorn gets a good look in on both these records;

Angel of Babylon

    * Jorn Lande (on track 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11)
    * Michael Kiske (on track 1, 10)
    * Russell Allen (on track 1)
    * Bob Catley (on track 11)
    * Cloudy Yang (on track 8)
    * Jon Oliva (on track 4)

The Wicked of Symphony

    * Jorn Lande (on track 1, 6, 7, 8)
    * Michael Kiske (on track 2, 6)
    * Russell Allen (on track 1, 10)
    * Bob Catley (on track 6)
    * Klaus Meine (on track 4)
    * Tim "Ripper" Owens (on track 3)
    * André Matos (on track 5)
    * Ralf Zdiarstek (on track 9)

Jorn is definitely a music WIN!!!

Definitely looking forward to these more now.  The single was probably an obvious choice for a film clip and promo.

On another note.  I am very dissapointed that Henjo Richter doesn't seem to be included on this.  He WAS the guitars for Avantasia.  Listen to the solo's on the Metal Opera 1, they were all another part of the songs, unlike Sascha, who really doesn't impress me all that much.  Even the songs Jens from Edguy played on along with Henjo IMO were better than a lot of Sascha's

The first two albums had so much melody in the songs from the guitars.  He is what made it extra special.  His work is killer on Scarecrow also, not as many solos, but the songs Henjo were involved IMO were better than songs were it was just Sascha.  The solo in this new single Henjo would have made it extra classy, instead of Sascha's I can play really fast for no apparant reason.

Look at the scarecrow credits and you be the judge;

    * Sascha Paeth – guitars
    * Henjo Richter – additional lead guitars (Tracks 2, 3, 6, 7, 8)
    * Kai Hansen – additional lead guitars (Track 3)
    * Rudolf Schenker – additional lead guitars (Track 10)

Yeah, I'm thinking his full time commitment to Gamma Ray.

Tobias' seems to talk Sascha up though, maybe he wanted him as the main guitarist.  Henjo showed him up everytime anyway.

Samples of all the songs:

https://www.7digital.com/artists/avantasia/the-wicked-symphony/

https://www.7digital.com/artists/avantasia/angel-of-babylon/

The Ripper track sounded good as did the first Russell Allen song, but a lot of these songs sound pretty boring. Although the first two Avantasia CDs were cheesy as fuck, I think Tobias is better suited for Power Metal.

Wicked Symphony - Sounded very promising
Wasteland - Sounded exactly like Return to the Tribe from Rocket Ride
Scales of Justice - Ripper sounds like a breath of fresh air on this, should have been on more tracks.
Dying for an Angel - IMO, crap
Blizzard on a Broken Mirror - Looking forward to hearing this full song, sounds quite excellent
Runaway Train - Sounds very average to be honest
Crestfallen - Could be a grower
Forever is a Long Time - Generic
Black Wings - Nice atmosphere
States of Matter - Typical Tobias, sounds like the Savage Union from the King of Fools EP.
The Edge - Save Me part 2.

Stargazers - Very Helloween, think March of Time
Angel of Babylon - Very Edguy, not bad
Your Love is Evil - Sounds quite average
Death is Just a Feeling - Wow!!!!! Another breath of fresh air with Mr. Oliva
Rat Race - Generic, nice pace
Down in the Dark - Boring
Blowing Out the Flame - zzzzzzzz
Symphony of Life - Hmmm....will wait for the full track
Alone I Remember - Very Whitesnake/Deep Purple.  Good chorus
Promised Land - Heard it on Lost in Space.  Brilliant tracks, sounds like it could be one of the best here.
Journey to Arcadia - Nothing special

I have mixed feelings from these samples.  There seems to be moments of brilliance. but also generic and boring moments.  First day buyer of course, but we will see.  I think the Ripper and Oliva tracks could be the highlights.  Bob Catley should have been used more also.

I have recently picked up the deluxe box set of the new Avantasia double album.  After listening through it a few times, it's pretty damn good.  There are a lot of good songs.  A couple of duds, but for 2 cd's there's surprising a lot of good material.  Definetely not up to Metal Opera standards, but obviously Tobias is done with straight power melodic metal.  Facts about the new albums;

*Henjo Richters guitar playing hurts both albums
*Bruce Kulick does a good job with his solos
*Sascha is okay but doesn't give solos the magic Henjo did.  His work is still very listenable
*A nice balance of styles throughout both albums, quite a lot of variety, lots to enjoy.
*Shitloads of JORN!!!!!  (This is a good thing)
*Russel Allen is probably the best performer, his singing is godlike, he's on a few tracks, but should have
  been on much more
*Kiske is surprisingly not that essential, his couple of songs are good, but Jorn or Allen do the job better
*Tim Owens and Jon Oliva have two of the best tracks, should have been used throughout
*Bob Catley only on two very average songs (this is bad)
*Andre Matos sings like 1 chorus on a song dissapointing
*If Tobias made one cd of the best tracks, it would have been EPIC

Best tracks;

Wicked Symphony
Wastelands
Scales of Justice
Blizzard on a Broken Mirror
States of Matter (my fav, Russel's chorus is amazing!)
Stargazers
Angel of Babylon
Death is Just a Feeling
Rat Race
Promised Land

That would be one amazing cd.

I've given The Wicked Symphony about 8 spins the past two days, and it my early impression is that it starts off strong and just slowly leaves my consciousness because very little past the third track is grabbing my attention.

I should have Angel of Babylon next week.  Hopefully its significantly better.
