I've given The Wicked Symphony about 8 spins the past two days, and it my early impression is that it starts off strong and just slowly leaves my consciousness because very little past the third track is grabbing my attention.

I should have Angel of Babylon next week.  Hopefully its significantly better.

If you aren't too keen on Symphony, I doubt that Babylon will be any better, but still pick it up and give it numerous spins.  I have made a full cd of the best songs of both albums, a killer disc all the way through.  The reason you are losing it after the third track is because of that horrible Dying for An Angel.  The songs on my disc are as follows;

The Wicked Symphony
Wastelands
Scales of Justice
Blizzard on a Broken Mirror
Crestfallen
Forever is a Long Time
States of Matter
Stargazers
Angel of Babylon
Your Love is Evil
Death is Just a Feeling
Rat Race
Alone I Remember
Promised Land

It's already ordered, so it will get its chance.  I think it goes beyond one bad song, becuase I have other CDs where one weak track doesn't kill the rest of the album.  I agree with your previous post though, more Ripper Owens would have been a good thing; and Russell Allen is on top of his game...those two points might explain why I lose a lot of interest after "Scales of Justice".

Russell is the winner for me, States of Matter is the best song from the two albums.  The Jon Oliva track is also a top 3 track.

I really enjoyed both of the new albums. I'd say it's quite a bit better than any Edguy I've heard, and after hearing these two albums I bought The Scarecrow which I also enjoyed quite a bit.

Favorite tracks: The Wicked Symphony, Scales of Justice, Blizzard on a Broken Mirror, Death is Just a Feeling, Rat Race, Symphony of Life.

Would you all say this is better, worse, or equal to the Scarecrow?

I think Scarecrow is better overall than The Wicked Symphony, but TWS's two best tracks are better than the best on Scarecrow.  I'm waiting for my copy of Angel of Babylon to arrive.

And to second what Nick said and go a step further, Avantasia's worst album is better than Edguy's best IMO.

Edguy were classic power metal up until Hellfire Club, after that Tobias just seemed to lose it.  I'm amazed at how good TWS/AOB is considering how utter crap Tinnitus Sanctus is.  I almost puked when I heard that.

I don't know if any of these two are better than the Scarecrow.  They could be, but IMO Scarecrow was pretty solid.  On their own I don't think either could take on the Scarecrow by itself.  Mix the songs together and you have a compilation better than the Scarecrow, on their own, nah.

Also, either of the new albums really have an epic like the Scarecrow.  You have TWS and Stargazers but neither really come close to the Scarecrow.  Give them time we will see.

Also, you really can't go past the metal opera.  No other Avantasia album will come close to these, these are power metal perfection.

I'm new to these forums and couldn't be more ecstatic with all of the fellow Jorn fans here.  I am pretty damned obsessed with the new Avantasia albums.  Right now Runaway Train is the one I've got going on repeat, its like the new Seven Angels.  Top songs for me are definitely that, The Wicked Symphony, Alone I Remember, and Journey to Arcadia.

Also, new Masterplan should be out soon as well as the 3rd Allen/Lande.  This is a fucking awesome year for Jorn.

True, but his solo stuff generally tends to be pretty lame in comparison.  Master plan, Avantasia, and Allen/Lande are all fuckin awesome.

I got my copy of Angel of Babylon yesterday.  I have a question for those of you who own it - does your copy have "hiccups" at the beginning of tracks 2 and 10?

OK...its not a hiccup, the first two seconds of tracks 2 and 10 are the same as the last 2 seconds of tracks 1 and 9; so it sounds like it skips.

I'll check later.  I just ripped the cd straight to my computer, I've never psychically played the cd.  I'll get it out later and let you know.

Runaway Train does it for me.  The vocals on that song are out of control.  That and The Seven Angels (MO pt. II) are like the best metal vocal songs ever.

I would have liked more Andre Matos, Russell Allen, and Klaus Meine.  It also sucks that the only song with a female vocalist is probably one of the worst songs Avantasia has ever released.  He could have definitely done a better job incorporating the female sound into a few more songs.  "What Kind of Love" from the Scarecrow is one of the most powerful songs they have, and the interplay between male and female voices is a big part of that.

I agree.  Allen should have been all over it as much as Jorn is.  Matos' involvement is really a waste and Klaus would have bee interesting on of of the more epic tracks instead of that Angel tripe of a song!

Also, as much as I am a fan of the shorter hits, Sammet's best work is ALWAYS his epics.  Just take a look at the songs from The Metal Opera, The Scarecrow, and TWS/AoB. (The Tower, Seven Angels, The Scarecrow, The Wicked Symphony, Runaway Train, etc)  Every one of the longer more developed songs is nothing short of brilliant.  Even with Edguy the songs that tend to be longer and more progressive are usually the best of their respective album.  The short ones definitely are great too, but they can be hit or miss for sure.  I know Sammet has got this fetish for classic-rock styled metal metal (hence the massive jorn influences), but he really is selling himself short by not going all out with more of the epic.

Although I must say, I really can't get into Runaway Train.

Listen over and over again and really pay close attention to all the different vocal parts and the interplay between them.  Runaway Train is the type of song that if you aren't paying attention it'll pass you right by without you even realizing, but if you put the time into it you are in for a big treat.

I'm a huge Tobias fan and have loved everything he's done since Vain Glory- with the awful exception that is Tinnitus Sanctis. Definately spread himself too thin there- a couple of decent songs but pretty much all filler. He used better song on his B  sides.
Absolutely love Rocket Ride, though it took some time to get into.

Loved the first Avantasia, the second less so, buut found the Scarecrow to be awesome. AoB and WS have taken a while to do anything for me, buut I had WS on in the car on the way back from the DT gig in Leeds last week and I thought it was excellent. Will revisit these two again.

And I have to say that unlike most I'm loving Dying for an Angel- with the exception of the transition from the first chorus to the 2nd verse, sound off to me.
