Images & Words vs. Octavarium -- song by song
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:40:25 AM »
Got this idea from something in another thread.  Rank the 16 songs from these two albums.  I know this is fairly arbitrary, but I'm just curious to see how they stack up against each other in different people's minds.

Mine:

1.  Octavarium
2.  Metropolis, pt. I
3.  Learning To Live
4.  Panic Attack
5.  Pull Me Under
6.  Sacrificed Sons
7.  The Root Of All Evil
8.  Wait For Sleep
9.  Take The Time
10.  These Walls
11.  Under a Glass Moon
12.  I Walk Beside You
13.  Never Enough
14.  Surrounded
15.  Another Day
16.  The Answer Lies Within

Hm actually a lot better mixed than I expected. Octavarium has a lot of good songs, but as an album it doesn't flow well enough to compete with IaW for me. But on a song by song basis, it stacks up quite nicely

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Yes I'm an I&W fanboi, and 8VM is fairly low/middle on my DT list, so no real surprises here.

I know this is fairly arbitrary, but I'm just curious to see how they stack up against each other in different people's minds.

Can you further explain why you picked these two albums?  Just curious.

Maybe because most of DT fanbase thinks that I&W is DT's definitive album, although the band thinks it is Octavarium.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

??? Actually, it's because of a discussion in the Octavarium thread.

I've chosen to use green and red, partially because they're the colours I most associate with the cover of each album, and partially because I fucking love christmas.

I've got a hunch I'll be crucified for some of those placements, which incidentally is how the chorus to The Root of All Evil goes, so hey!

I've got a hunch I'll be crucified for some of those placements

Only Metropolis.  *crucifies*

I'll take your green and red idea though, because I share your love for Christmas.

1. Metropolis Pt. 1
2. Learning to Live
3. Under a Glass Moon
4. Octavarium
5. Take the Time
6. Wait for Sleep
7. Surrounded
8. Another Day
9. Pull Me Under
10. The Root of All Evil
11. These Walls
12. I Walk Beside You
13. Sacrificed Sons
14. The Answer Lies Within
15. Panic Attack
16. Never Enough

For the record, I probably like TROAE better than PMU and maybe Another Day, but in the interest of staying consistent with my brash statement in the other thread (something along the lines of "aside from the title track, the best song on Octavarium is still worse than the worst song on I&W"), I've gone against my better judgment, i.e. honesty.

Didn't JP mention something about that in the SC documentary?  But then again, maybe he wasn't speaking for the whole band.  That's what I immediately thought of when reading Mebert's post.
