DTF's 2010 Top Hat Photo Adventure-O-RAMA (PICS!!!)
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:44:52 PM »
Inspired from here:
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=9106.490;topicseen

The whole idea, is we get one hat, and ship it across the world, one DTF member at a time, and take pictures with said hat.

Now, first off we need people interested, shipping info for each person, and work out who gets the hat and when. I think I shall keep all of the shipping info, for privacy reasons, and only give out one address to each member interested.

So come one, come all. Who's interested?

Sounds like fun. Count me in. I could possibly provide the top hat as well.

Also, I think hefdaddy42 should be excluded. :p
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

So, I think once we get a sufficient amount of people interested and willing, you all should begin with sending me your shipping info, so I can organize who gets the hat from who.

Is there going to be any way to ship the thing for free? I'm not sure it'll be as popular if we have to pay for it.

I am so in.
This is going to be awesome, and the tension of waiting for the hat to arrive will kill me.

Suggestion: maybe we could send around a card or something and everyone to receive the hat up until that point signs it and writes down their location?
That way, we'll have a map of where it's been with signatures and everything.

Oh, and how long should we each keep the hat?
And I'm assuming the individual who would be in possession of the hat would be responsible for shipping costs?
Everything can, should and will be progressive.

I was wondering about that. I'm not entirely sure. But how much would one hat really cost to ship around the States? or Canada?

I like the card idea. And if anyone wants to add a little...flair to the hat, I say go for it.

Also, I'd assume the person in possession of the hat should only keep it for maybe a couple days, max.

I would love to, but since I recently participated in a Secret Santa World Wide version, I can tell you that it is EXTREMELY expensive to ship things around the globe.

This is why we can't have nice things!

To ship a medium flat rate box to Canada would be $26...

Well, what determines the cost of international shipping? Just whether you are in the same country or not, or how far away you are from another country?

This is my concern.
It would be an epic adventure on a scale which could merit a documentary by the Discovery Chanel if it happens though.

Imagine to England or Australia.

Well, the idea I was primarily considering was having the person with the hat ship to the closest person to them.

Yeah, but someone on the east coast will be stuck shipping it to the people in England and so on, so it could end up being a lot of money.

I have sent letters and CD's from Bogotá, Colombia to France and it cost me $56. I sent last Christmas two toys, and by the weight (really, not heavy at all) cost me $86. The gift cost me $15. Ridiculous.

Note: I used different companies each time.

Yeah, shipping is really the only issue with this scheme.

I suppose it would have to just come down to those who truly wouldn't mind shelling out the cash. Which is understandable if you aren't.

Well, the idea I was primarily considering was having the person with the hat ship to the closest person to them.
That would work for the States, but the International shipping would still kill us. Plus, I could see some complaints about how someone had to pay more than the other person.

Let it be known that I'm not actively trying to shoot this down. :p

No no, it's understandable.

Another idea is pooling together a bunch of money, so everyone ends up paying the same amount of money. But even that I'm not 100% sure about.

I would love for this to work, but we might need to confine it to one continent.
Unless someone is up to paying the money to move it over seas.

Who would get the money? How would it get there?
Can you ship money in the box with the hat so you can help the next people pay for the costs?

Yeah, I think from the looks of it, we might be stuck with just North America. Unless someone is really willing to pay for this to get outside of NA.

And with my pooling money together idea, what could be done is sending me (or another well trusted DTFer) the cash through envelope or something. I don't know, I'm still working the kinks out I suppose.

If we stick the North America idea we can ship flat rate, it's not that much. Just find a collapsible hat and it's $10 to ship.

I get the feeling we are going to be confined with the US/North America. Again, unless someone really feels like being a bro and paying for International shipping. But it's not required in any way.

I think this is a good idea though. I think I shall do what I can to find a decent enough hat, and if anyone else is willing to look as well, that'd be great.

EDIT: Now we just need more participants

I think that's what the concept of the card was for. But this would be cool to. I think each member should add their own little piece of "flair" to the hat. Giving it some...personality?

But it's kinda hard to think of things to add to the hat? How about you add something to the total package to wear? Like a necklace, a button, or a sign to hold up?

I assume you meant "flair", because I don't think you meant for us to set it on fire.  ;) As far as hats go, I have a rainbow "Cat in the Hat" styled hat that would easily fit in a small box. I can post pictures if interested.

Please do. Though, the collapsible hat would work better, because then it could fit in a medium sized manila envelope.

I say add anything that can fit in whatever you ship it in. Either add something to the hat, or to the overall package. I'm willing to be really lenient with this, seeing how it's all for the lulz.

Please do. Though, the collapsible hat would work better, because then it could fit in a medium sized manila envelope.
It is collapsible. It could definitely fit into a manila envelope, which would save us a hell of a lot on shipping.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

I'm in, and I think every member that gets it should sign it, so whenever it gets back to whomever bought it it's signed by all participating members.
I think that's what the concept of the card was for. But this would be cool to. I think each member should add their own little piece of "flare" to the hat. Giving it some...personality?
I assume you meant "flair", because I don't think you meant for us to set it on fire.  ;) As far as hats go, I have a rainbow "Cat in the Hat" styled hat that would easily fit in a small box. I can post pictures if interested.

Well then shit, I think we've got our hat. Post pics though, so we can be sure.

Once we know if we are using this hat, we just need a small handful more people to be interested. Then I want to collect addresses and shit.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Global Laziness and XianL live in the same city as me, so count them in (probably).

And hell's yeah on the hat/group collective effort.
Start it off with a card though Lat.

Can and will do.

And I'll add them in each as a maybe until we get confirmation. Also, you guys are in Canada, correct? Does this count as international (wallet rape) shipping?
