Appreciate Gorillaz
« on: January 30, 2010, 01:32:42 AM »
I adore this virtual group of humanoids! I got their first CD the day it came out and have been collecting every single piece of music they've released since that time, and I cream my Noodle-themed panties thinking of the release of Plastic Beach. I didn't listen to them for the longest time though, only collected their music and somehow became addicted to drawing the guys in my own zany, scary comic strips. Damon Albarn and the many, many other artists that appear in the group are so talented and mesh fantastically. It's difficult to pin any one genre to the band; a testament to their diversity. I get the feeling that despite the intertwined, deep storyline of the fictional group, all the rumors surrounding the artists themselves (well, not so much anymore but rather when they first came into the scene), and the time spent on each album, the songs have a laid-back, 'self-parody' feeling to them.

I just recently got back into them when I bought the new Stylo promo; their first single for Plastic Beach. Anyway, I really enjoy their music and they are to this day my favorite live performance; really trippy, crazy shows.

Oh yeah, um...I guess we can do a favorite songs/albums, to spice things up a tad. My favorite songs are: The Sounder, Rock The House, Re Hash, Strictly Rubbadub, New Genius (Brother), Slow Country and Stylo. I could probably pick more but it'd get ridiculous. Favorite album is their S/T first release. Favorite LP/EP is G-Sides. Anyone else into these guys/gals/animals? Are the fans of this band as into their story as I am? It's pretty crazy, ridiculously exaggerated and complete bullshit but it's awesome on so many levels. Appreciated.

Wow, didn't expect to see so much Demon Days love. I really like DD, but not nearly as much as their S/T, and going by the few songs I've heard off of Plastic Beach, that trend will continue. This next one might bump S/T down a slot, which is exciting considering it's been in that spot for years. Either way, I'm glad to hear more material from this wacky pack of people. There's a lot of talent on this one as well, a lot of big names than in the past. That's not to say bigger names equate to better music but I'm hoping that will be the case.

Ah yes and for those that do like DDays, check out the D-Sides, it has some gems on it. It's different though, quite different from DDays. Hearkens back to their original stuff but with the DDays twist of a bit more hip/hop and trip/hop. Rockit is probably my favorite track...really funny but groovy.

Bought the first CD because all of the fuzz. It demonstrates that I was a kid. I don't know where's that CD anymore.

lol

I have very mixed feelings about Gorillaz. I love their more trip-hoppy stuff - El Manana is an amazing song. But I really cannot get into rap, and so that side of them really takes away from the whole IMO.

I can relate, I was the same when I first began listening to them and maintained that opinion until recently. Lately I've been getting back into rap; mainly the old school side of the genre. So it was a bit easier for me to transition, yeah. Rap or no rap though, they're a talented bunch.

Plastic Beach is pretty good! Got old a little fast, though. Guess I'm not as into these guys as I once was.
