But then isn't that similar to only wanting to see the bottom left of the Mona Lisa?
No, because paintings and songs aren't experienced in the same way, so you're comparing apples and oranges.

But even if it were, then so what?

Musical ADHD lol

People with this "condition" drive me up the wall.

Agreed 100%. It's just like putting in a movie, then skipping to the epic battle sequence near the end. Wtf is that all about. Yeah, you have the freedom to do such a thing, but it ruins the whole point of the entire work of art.  :tdwn :tdwn :tdwn
If the entire work of art doesn't float your boat, then why would you suffer through it?
Because it gives context to the rest of it?

Octavarium builds and builds to Intervals, for example. Intervals isn't nearly half as exciting if you haven't had the rest of the song continually growing and growing. If one part of the song causes me so much of an exquisitely agonising problem that I have to skip it, then I kinda disregard the rest of the song.

I do too, if it's in the middle of the song.  But if it's at the beginning or end, and thus easily skippable, there is no good reason why I (or anyone else) should listen to music I don't like.

I hate it whenever someone disturbs me when I'm in Full Circle part of Octavarium.

"Damn it, it was getting closer to Razor's Edge, but you totally ruined it."

Then when I listen again from that part, I don't have that built-up emotions anymore. :|

I agree! I don't think I often navigate through the beginning, unless there's something seriously hyperextended - Disgustipated by Tool is a good example - but yes.

I never saw the fun in skipping tracks. I understood why people do, but I never really liked it myself. I like to experience the song as a whole.

To be honest I would be giving Metallica fans 8VM anyway.

I skip over those parts in 8vm, as well...when I ever even listen to it.  I just don't like it.

I agree with this. I very rarely want to spend the 89 minutes or however long it is waiting for the buildup to the good part of the song.

That the whole song is greater than the sum of its parts.

To you.  But if the whole is dragged down by the parts one doesn't like, why shouldn't one only listen to the parts one likes, thereby maintaining a positive mental attitude toward the song, and providing an overall enjoyable listening experience?

"The songs are too long" is probably one of the excuses i hate the most.
To me, it's about the song being the best it can be.
An example: SDOIT by DT, 42 minutes something in total, but not too long at all.
It has a great flow, and it doesn't get boring... and as others have said already, the whole point with music in general isn't a part here or a part there, it's the whole picture. (or in this case song.)

You can enjoy it any way you want.

But it would still be missing the point.

Having "the point" being to get the audience to sit through a terrible piece of music is an interesting artistic statement and neat psychology experiment, but it doesn't necessarily make for a good song...

The point is to enjoy the music, period. Let everyone be.
