Title: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!
Post by: Volk9 on January 06, 2010, 08:02:13 PM
I searched to see if we had a thread dedicated to electronic music, but alas, we didnt.

But now we do :tup

Anyways, techno and trance were two of the first genres of music that I really got into. From there I moved into DJ/breakbeat stuff, and finally into trip hop, acid jazz, and other downtempo music.

Favorite artists are below

Techno/Trance

Ferry Corsten
ATB
Tiesto

House

Daft Punk
Les Rythmes Digitales

Breakbeat

DJ Krush
DJ Shadow

Other

Boards of Canada
Massive Attack
Thievery Corporation
Cinematic Orchastra
Telepopmusik
Portishead
Goldfrapp

Best electronic album evah, BT - This Binary Universe. That album really is something else, get it in 5.1 if you can. It is just one of those albums that is beyond simple explanations and classifications.

PENDULUM!

/thread

I just got their live CD/DVD and it's amazing.  If you've never heard them, go look up the song "The Tempest" on youtube.

Other bands:

Daft Punk (I enjoy them a little, but they're overrated/there's much better electronic music out there)
Massive Attack
Shpongle
Venetian Snares

I expected that list to be longer... which means I need more of this style of music.  Recommendations anyone?

I don't REALLY like most electronic music.

But I REALLY like anything by

Aphex Twin (specifically his ambient stuff)
and Massive Attack

Also I found this guy Benn Jordan, I guess he has an alias Flashbulb?, but yeah he did this INCREDIBLE ambient album that was a tribute to Carl Sagan.

Aphex Twin is great. I saw Infected Mushroom live last year, they were fantastic. I don't really know anything else, I have to get some of the stuff in this thread.

Well, depends on what you're looking for.

A great French house artist named Les Rhythmes Digitales is fantastic. His music sounds retro, and yet modern. The samples are playful and add a lot to the music, and he has a great sound all around. Definately check out the album Darkdancer (the cover looks cheesy, but its worth it. Highly recommended)

Since you like Massive Attack, you may like Portishead also (though they dont have much in common. Check out their self-titled album. Also, you may like Tricky, who is on of the members of Massive Attack. His album Maxinquaye is a great place to start.

Also, I'd recommend Boards of Canada. Very experimental and they come up with some crazy stuff. Geogaddi or Music has a Right to Children are both good places to start.

@ Sigz: I like Infected Mushroom too (although I don't have any of their music anymore).

Here are my favorite electronic albums:

BT - This Binary Universe
Prodigy - Fat of the Land
Portishead - S/T, 3
Massive Attack - Mezzanine, Blue Lines
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing..... (This can be considered Hip Hop more than electronic)
Supersilent - 6 (Free Improvisation, Electronic, Experimental Rock, Ambient, Avant-Garde Jazz, Electronic, what more could a man want?)

Pendulum - might be considered Drum N Bass, or just Electronic-Rock.
Anyways, they're legen...wait for it... dary (as Barney Stinson would have put it).
In Silico is an amazing album, and worth checking out actualleh. (The Tempest, Visions espec.)

Radiohead/Thom Yorke - the electronic albums. (Kid A/Amnesiac, parts of Hail to the thief/In Rainbows)
Might also mention The Eraser by RH-frontman Thom Yorke, it's an electronic-masterpiece.

Bass Communion - Ambient/noisy/dark etc, this sideproject by SW is a pearl.
Ghosts On Magnetic Tape and Molotov And Haze are 2 amazing albums.

Pure Reason Revolution - Progressive Rock, but a very electronic sound. they rock.

Well, they only have four, plus a remix album. They're all pretty great, I'm not such a fan of their first album (Are You Shpongled) but some hardcore electronica fans seem to prefer it, presumably because they don't like their music "diluted" with other styles and ideas. But my favourite is definitely Tales of the Inexpressible, and Nothing Lasts... and the new one, Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland are also great.

I listened to the first two songs in their secondd album. Not bad at all. I may look into the rest.

Yeah, that's sweet.. a biref master of puppets cover even! Plus their live standards "blood sugar" and voodoo people cover are  :hat.

Anyone got any Aphex twin recommendations.. I have Richard D James (and come to daddy, windowlicker and the like on mp3).

I keep meaning to get that DJ shadow album. Similar stuff, anyone like UNKLE?

Anyone have any good recommendations for dance techno/trance?
Title: Re: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!
Post by: ben_1112 on January 13, 2010, 11:09:15 AM
Been getting really into the whole electro scene lately, plus I love dancing so it was bound to happen eventually.  I'm more into the progressive house/trance than straight up house or trance, but it's all good.  I'm assuming most people know the bigger names like Tiesto and Armin van Buuren, so here's some from other great producers...

Trance:

Gareth Emery is a sick DJ... saw him spin on New Year's Eve, most epic experience of my life, no joke.  Check out "Metropolis" and "Mistral", pumpin tunes!
Ashley Wallbridge - Chimera, Shotokan, Harrier
Alex M.O.R.P.H. - Sunset Boulevard
Sander van Doorn - Bliksem, Ninety
Arnej - The Return, Dust In The Wind
Ferry Corsten - Twice In A Blue Moon, Shanti, hell most of his stuff is top notch
Menno de Jong - Last Light Tonight

House:

Armand Van Helden, great dancing music!
Pryda - Waves, Genesis
Jerome Isma-Ae - Hold That Sucker Down (intense track!)
Wippenberg - Chakalaka, Pong, both catchy as fuck
Deadmau5 - not a huge fan of most of his stuff, but he's got some good tunes.  "Faxing Berlin", "Arguru", "Strobe"

I could go on and on, but that should do for starters.

Wow, some great names here: I love electronic music, mostly the ambient side of it:

Bass Communion
Brian Eno
Klaus Schulze
Steve Roach
Robert Rich

But I've recently gotten into somewhat harder electronics:
Otto Von Schirach
The Quemists
Merzbow
LeLe

For anyone wanting to get into some light electronic ambience, try the Fahrenheit Project CD's. They're mixtapes of great ambient pieces, all flowing into one another. Which results in one massive, hour long ambient trip. With names like Chi-AD, Aes Dana, Solar Fields, Hol Baumann, Robert Rich a.o.

Here's a few more I've found from browsing Youtube.

Borgore - Guided Relaxation Dub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5WxZNIpszs

It takes like a minute for this one to start.  This one is really cool.  I've heard Borgore is known for this kind of stuff, so you might want to investigate them more.

Downlink - Gamma Ray Burst https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMcyGLqm0N8

Fast forward to about 50 seconds.

I'd say just browse around youtube for related videos and see what you can find.  Post some in here if you find good ones.

I'm not sure if he has any official albums.  It seems like a lot of dubstep artists just release songs here and there on splits with other artists.  I just found a collection of his stuff and downloaded it.

I just got his Vol. 1 and its pretty good so far, though there are some throwaway tracks (this is my first venture into dubstep btw. Never even heard of it before). Anyways, my favorite songs were Love (after I edited out the stupid intro part), Saturday Night, and Borgore ina Trouble.

Yeah some of the intros are a bit weird; they seem to be a part of the genre though.  The first minute or so of almost every dubstep song I have has a slow/weird intro, then the song drops or picks up.  I love playing this stuff in the car.  Besides being able to listen to it through a good system, it just makes for good driving music.

Thread rivival! In the last week or so I have checked out a few electronic albums and these are my thoughts:

Juno Reactor - Labyrinth

This album is simply excellent. I had heard the name Juno Reactor before, and only had a vague idea of his sound. And this album was completely not what I was expecting. It's so schizophrenic and diverse. Tonnes of really cool moments and I'd recommend this to any fans of electronic music!

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Ok, this is my favourite album of this week. Every now and again I have to remind myself that this is a 1992 record. It sounds so ahead of it's time! It's just a great listen every time I put it on. The music isn't particularly offensive or in your face, so it's perfect for late night listens or while studying. That said, while it's great background music, it's still really interesting and soothing. I'd recommend this to any fans of ambient.

And the two other albums I listened to where

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Shpongle - Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland

Both were great. As you can see I chose all these albums carefully (including taking on board the recommendations in this thread ) but so far, I'm incredibly impressed.

Well thanks to Gwii, I've been getting into a lot of Dubstep for the past few weeks.

Its hard to find actual albums, since most artists just release in singles and remixes, but I highly recommend the Fabriclive 37 compilation to anyone who has interest in the genre. Perfect mix of both atmospheric and "heavy" dubstep.

Would you guys say that No-Man qualifies under 'electronic music'?
Cause i think some of their music would. :P

About Bass Communion, i got: Ghosts on Magnetic Tape, Molotov and Haze & Atmospherics.
I like them all very much, any recommendation on what to get next?

Also, new Pendulum-album called "Immersion" will be out on May 24th i believe, Steven Wilson will contribute to a song on it, called "The Fountain". :)

Definately get I, if not for the song "Drugged" alone.

Well the only electronic thing about no-man, is their breakbeats, but they only incorporated that on their first couple ep's/albums.
So I wouldn't say that they make electronic music.

As for Bass Communion, go for I, II, and Loss. Together with Ghosts... those are the best albums Steven Wilson made within BC.
Oh and of course, you SHOULD check out Continuum II, if only for the first track: Construct IV.

-u-Ziq
-Massive Attack
-Daft Punk

Cosmogramma (new Flying Lotus) isn't quite as good songwise as Los Angeles, but it has better flow from an album perspective.  Both are awesome.

I'd say Flying Lotus is more electronic than hip-hop just because he does a crapload of experimentation and effects that is pretty much unknown in hip-hop, except a wee bit in groups like Antipop Consortium.

Volk, that sounds pretty cool (assuming it's electronic, that is).  What did you use to create it?

Some live instruments, a lot of VSTI's, and some wavepad for editing.

The music itself is breakbeat, sometimes hard, and sometimes soft and atmospheric. Its instrumental, but theres a few samples. DJ Krush is my biggest influence probably. The website is in the working right now, so after thats done I can start releasing more information.

It should be forbidden to just play a dubstep song in a club. It should either be total dubstep party, or as a grande dirty finale of a DJ set at the end of the night.

Favourites: Borgore, Skrillex, Flux Pavillion, Reso, Torqux, Tomba, Datsik... man too many.

I've always loved electronic music like techno, but Pendulum now brought me into the drum and bass genre. I need to seek some techno/trance artists

A friend of mine got me into Pendulum about 2 years ago, so long before Immersion came out, and I was immediately hooked by both Hold Your Colour and In Silico.
Even though Pendulum has changed, I still think all of their albums are fantastic, and I really can't wait to see what they'll do next. :)

Not that it's bad but it's quite a change they took.

Holy shit, i've found baby jesus

Great to hear, that album is fantastic.  :tup

Reading reviews and listening right now. Man this album is loved and hated. I've seen reviews differing from 2/10 to 10/10. I don't know what to think yet, I guess this needs time to sink in.

I reckon the 2/10 people found Ulver through the black metal -era... or then they just don't like it. Either way I think the album is amazing.

What programs do you all use to make music?  I just started making electronic music a few weeks ago (I suck, needless to say), and my friend turned me on to Ableton Live.  Maybe I'll be able to share something when I get setup with some decent samples and plugins.

I used MusicMaker from Magix, but its more for the interface and some VST's. I've been working on my next album a bit and been using SOOOO many different VST's and stuff though. So as long as you find a good interface, you can get even better plug ins for it.

Pendulum- Immersion is amazing, best dance album I've come across so far. The other albums are also reallly good.
The Prodigy- The Fat of the Land, but also Music for the Jilted Generation and Invaders Must Die
Fatboy Slim - Only have We've Come A Long Way, Baby, but it's a very fun album
Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole, also a very fun album.
BT - This Binary Universe  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Radiohead - Kid A, Amnesiac, HTTT yadda but I don't really consider them to be electronic music in the strict sense.

Hey guys. I never noticed this thread before so I never posted, but I'm a huge electronic music fan. I run a project called Madcoil, kind of ambient vintagey electronic, and I have a song in the Bleep "Filtered" contest. If you like this kind of music, give it a listen and if you can leave me a comment, good or bad, I would really appreciate it. The song has already been favorited by Bleep.com so I think it's doing good behind the scenes, but I've gotten almost no feedback on it.

Enjoy!

Nah man, Hold your Color has too much filler, although Slam, Hold your Color, Girl in the Fire and Another Planet are all very awesome songs.

In Silico is just a very good album with a lot of good flow, but not a lot of high points.

Immersion = 67min eargasm

Hold Your Colour has some of my favorite Pendulum-songs though, songs like: Another Planet, Still Grey (depending on what version you have), the title-track obviously, Girl in the Fire, Blood Sugar (again, depending on version), and Plasticworld.

In Silico has 9000 Miles, Granite, Showdown, Propane Nightmares, The Tempest, Visions and Midnight Runner.

Immersion has Encoder, The Island (both Parts), The Fountain and Under the Waves.

Well, I really love all of their albums, these are just some of my favorites. :P
I might also add that Voodoo People would be high on my list, but I don't think there's a studio version of it.

Quite a bunch of the stuff I've been enjoying has been coming from the Ghostly label

https://ghostly.com/ (https://ghostly.com/)

Musicians like Matthew Dear, Deastro, and even Justin Brodarick's Pale Sketcher project calls the label home.

The other label that works with my electronic music tastes would be DFA.  Aside from the just-disbanded LCD Soundsystem, their roster includes The Rapture (who just released a great follow-up album recently) and The Juan MacLean, who are releasing a collection of b-sides and remixes before year's end.

The Kitsune Maison compilations are one of my best sources for new and interesting electronic music acts.  They usually have some great remixes from France.  Got to hear music by Yelle and remixes of Phoenix's stuff from them.

Other than those, I've also been checking out some music by Junior Boys and Washed Out.

Other than those, I've also been checking out some music by Junior Boys and Washed Out.

I really like LCD Soundsystem. I may have to check some of the artists on that label.

I didn't really "get" LCD Soundsystem either until Sound of Silver.  The opening track to that album, Get Innocuous!, was what reeled me in.  Too bad the band had to call it quits.  Still, I'm looking forward to stuff from whatever James Murphy will be doing next.  We've also still got stuff from the other members of LCD Soundsystem's touring band whether it's The Rapture, or Holy Ghost!, or The Juan MacLean.

Also looking forward to that Terminal 5 show that the band video taped for DVD.

Guys. I know I don't frequent this thread much, but if you haven't already, I urge you to check out mind.in.a.box.

They are the best electronic band I've ever heard, apparently their official genre is futurepop.

All of their albums so far have been part of a big concept which satisfies the inner prog nerd in a lot of us, and they seem to have a distinct writing style that pretty eliminates them from having any weak songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocMgdP177AM

this is my favourite song by them at the moment, but it varies every time I listen to them.

Fans of VNV Nation, Covenant, Apoptygma Berzerk etc. should lap this stuff right up.

Woah.

So the Czech electronic artist Floex is putting up a song from his new album every day leading up to its release, and shit, this is shaping up to be really, really good.  The link to it is here, https://www.floex.cz/ ...and check back again for new songs and the album when it's out if you like what you hear!  There are three songs up so far and I can't get enough of them!

Well the whole thing is out and it is beautiful.  Definitely one of my favorite releases this year, not a weak song on it.  So I'm just re-recommending it, but now I'm doing so after having heard the whole thing, and I can now fully attest to its greatness.  I'm really loving Nel Blu, in particular.

Nice to see such a big branch of the music world isn't banned on a rock based forum. :)

I'm on a big BT wave myself, really enjoying the last album a lot. Also Noisia gets a fair amount of playtime, but that's really nasty music, so not all the time.
I'm also really into the last album by Hybrid. Brilliant stuff.

Been getting back to listening to old school industrial off the Wax Trax!/TVT catalogue lately.  Big emphasis on listening to Revolting Cocks.  Talk about an all-star lineup that included a revolving door of musicians from Pigface, Ministry, Front 242, etc.

And look!  There's a blurry bootleg of a show from the 90s.  Turn it up!

Havent listened to them in a long time, but yes they are pretty cool.

Funny story: When I was in high school, I used to go to Best Buy and just by albums at random just to see what I would get. Cruxshadows Dream Cypher was one that I had gotten based on the cover alone. I got it expecting some sort of metal or rock, and needless to say, when I put it in my CD player, I was disappointed.

I mean, what was I suppose to think?

But after a while I listened to it some more (this time knowing what to expect) and thoroughly enjoyed it :tup

I actually felt bored by their performance at SNL.  For a couple of Jackson guitars and a Marshall 4x12 set of speakers, their sound was rather weak.  They should've tweaked their stomp boxes a bit to get the right effect for TV.
Title: Re: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!

To be fair, most bands sounds like shit on SNL.
Title: Re: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!
Post by: TVC 15 on February 22, 2012, 05:07:39 PM
That's got to be the weakest of all guitar sounds I've heard on SNL though.  I think my favorite guitar tone coming off a performance from the show was when Fishbone did their thing.  Bands with acoustic guitars seem to have more favorable conditions at the show (see: Fleet Foxes).
Title: Re: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!
Post by: Sigz on February 22, 2012, 05:11:48 PM
I don't really watch enough SNL to be able to compare, all I know is that every live band I've seen on it (and most other late night shows) sounds terrible.

Saw Above & Beyond friday night. IT WAS MINDBLOWING. Easily the best EDM show I've seen, and one of the best shows in general.

Highlights include:
-dancing really hard, turn around and see a dude in a wheelchair and feel like an asshole
-later see that guy crowdsurfing in his wheelchair during Thing Called Love. He flashed them a heart sign and Tony flashed him one back, it was fucking awesome.
-The big synth break in Sun & Moon was of course brilliant
-huge confetti burst near the end, it was perfectly timed with an Indonesia remix kicking in
-people watching was as fun as ever, saw a dude in a suit and top hat doing a tai chi style dance in the back, right next to these two hardcore asian ravers

I'm getting into a bit of electronic music after being pulled into something called EMG. (Basically, it's a bunch of people who have synthesizers, and got a synth and thus got pulled into it). So I'm going through the stuff of the other people in EMG and giving it a listen, but I heard Portishead's Dummy a few years back and enjoyed it, so I should probably get some more of their stuff.

but yeah, the only EMG release so far is from before I joined, but give it a go. (Notes: In Sequence is a friend of mine, so that's how I got pulled in.)

First a disclaimer: This is a song by one of my friends. It's sort of prog-drone (I wasn't quite sure if this would be the right thread, but his stuff tends to be quite electronic, but it's moving much towards the eastern), but I had to share it. I've not heard anything quite like this before.

I listened to "More Monsters And Sprites" today. I wasn't as bad as I expected (it had some good melodies) but it's way too repetitive for me to like. I guess EDM is supposed to be repetitive though since you can't really dance to something that changes every five seconds.

Awhile ago, I listened to brostep stuff like that, and realized it only has an average of two parts per song and gets boring after about one part. So I just stopped listening to it.

He's pretty great. I'd say "Random Album Title" and "For Lack of a Better Name" are his best albums. "4x4=12" is also good, but I feel like some of the songs on that album gets repeated a bit too much. It actually annoys me sometimes, especially on "Cthulhu Sleeps", which is pretty much the same thing for 10 minutes.  :lol

Favorite songs would be: "I Remember", "Raise Your Weapon", "Ghosts n Stuff", "The 16th Hour" and "Some Chords".

Went to see Tycho and Matthew Dear as part of Seattle's annual Decibel Electronic Music Festival.  They performed as part of the Ghostly label's showcase.  What I found great about both acts was that they're more known to produce electronic music as solo acts, but for their performances that evening, they both had live orchestrations within a band structure to play the songs.

Tycho may be known to most folks who check out Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.  His music has been used during those interstatials during commercial breaks.  The band that evening sounded like Minus The Bear without any of the vocals.  Most of their set came from the new album, Dive.  It sounded fantastic.  Most of the credit goes to their drummer.  That guy was spot-on.

Matthew Dear was also great to listen to.  The whole band looked elegant as they played techno bangers sporting designer suits.  The live experience for Matthew Dear shows are so different from what you'd hear on record as well.  I was actually surprised at how much tweaking Matthew did for his vocals, especially considering that he had a pretty decent live singing voice.  I'd like to hear him spin a DJ set some time.

I listened to "More Monsters And Sprites" today. I wasn't as bad as I expected (it had some good melodies) but it's way too repetitive for me to like. I guess EDM is supposed to be repetitive though since you can't really dance to something that changes every five seconds.

You should check out blackmill, it's some really great stuff, in fact everyone should check him out:

Cool, love that band!

Also, I don't know if you guys are into Ulrich Schnauss, but his new album is awesome. He does electronic shoegaze in case you didn't know, and he does it incredibly well. Check it out.

Listening to a trance mix I found on youtube.  I don't listen to it very often, but I do enjoy it when I listen to it.  Most of the time I stream it on internet radio (HBR1.com is my preferred site).

Recently discovered Austra.
Grimes and Austra are set to become my holy 2 of this vein. Obviously Grimes being el numero 1. Grimes music just resonates in a way no other musician, like Kvelertak per se does and that sounds kind of creepy...but it's the best way I can explain it.

That new album from The Knife is insanely good.  I didn't think I'd be all wrapped up in amazement at the more ambient pieces, but they were just as great to listen to as their more beat-heavy stuff.

BTW, also glad that Matthew Dear may be upping his profile now that he's opening for Depeche Mode on their European tour. So glad for the guy who's worked so hard to get to that point in his career.

I'm really enjoying Random Acess Memories and feel like its a vast improvement over Human after All. Its a sweet album, but incredibly different than anything they have ever down. It has a much more mature and subtle sound to it, and I'm really digging it.

Title: Re: The Official Electronic Music Thread v. Bring yer glowsticks!
Post by: Phoenix87x on May 22, 2013, 04:49:48 PM
So after maybe 5 listens so far of RAM, although I find it satisfying, I can't help feeling kind of underwhelmed at the same time. Its just a bit too laid back and has kind of a passive sound to it.

The only songs that make me physically start moving or make me feel compelled to move are Get Lucky and Doing it Right. That's it, for the rest of it, I feel like its an album to listen to before going to sleep or an album to unwind to, which is fine. Its just that what I've always liked about Daft Punk is that they are like the musical equivalent of a cup of coffee, they get me off my ass and motivated. RAM chills me out like an Ambien.

Another thing I will say is that the album is way too long. At 74 minutes, it loses focus about have way through. Because of that, I had to trim off a few songs to get this thing more manageable, so I removed Giorgio by morodor, within, and Fragments of time.

But regardless, its still a million times better than human after all and I am happy to have it be a part of my collection.

Really loving the new album 'Immunity' by Jon Hopkins. He previously worked as a sound designer with Brian Eno on Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' album. His earlier solo stuff sounds a bit generic but beautiful, and on this new record he's really coming into his own as an electronic music artist. The album flows like one piece and there's even plenty of his piano skills on display throughout. I love this record.

Went to Movement Festival in Detroit over memorial day weekend, it was goddamned amazing. Maceo Plex was the definite highlight, but every act was great. Other faves were Stacey Pullen, Martinez Brothers, Tale of Us, and a ton of the local techno artists.

I was also staying in a warehouse like a mile from the festival with some friends, so it was basically like 72 straight hours of insanity. I got about 4 hours of sleep the entire time.

Got the earlybird 10 day wristband for BPM in Mexico January 9-18th. Renting an apartment with 2 of my friends for the entire 10 day streak, I am so goddamned excited. The lineup last year was absolutely mindblowing: https://www.thebpmfestival.com/2014-artist-line-up/

so, I know next to nothing about this genre of music.  However there are some things I've heard that I'd like to see if there is more of out there.  For instance the intro to the tv show Halt and Catch Fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD_kCKiSkoI  or the intros to Depeche Mode's World In My Eyes (and Halo to a lesser extent).

Basically I like the upbeat stuff (but not too upbeat, I imagine some of it can get pretty crazy).  Computery type sounds.  Lots of tom-type drum sounds (I hope I'm describing that correctly).  I have no idea what sub-genre that might be.  And I would rather there not be any vocals.  Any suggestions?

I would recommend you Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children, some of the best electronic can offer.
If you want to start with more upbeat stuff, try Daft Punk - Discovery or Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour (it starts with one of their greatest songs, Being Boring, see if you like it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gui3fPN95rE).

If you want more upbeat stuff with some cool experimentation, try Infected Mushroom - Vicious Delicious. It starts with their most famous song, Becoming Insane. Want some ambient, relaxing, beautiful stuff? Burial - Untrue.

I ran into this post by Sigz on accident and needed to share it:

I'd love to hear it. Sad to read through this thread and realize a lot of people don't even know what electronica actually is.  :lol

I honestly have no idea what electronica actually means. I've always assumed it was just another word for electronic music (which in the end is not a very descriptive genre either).

Trance, my guilty pleasure. There are so many amazing tunes out there, although as many of them are released in a trillion different remixes it can be a pain to find the right one. Above & Beyond have some great ones. Other favourites of mine include Dash Berlin and Alex Morph.

It has to be melodic though, I can't stand dubstep and all that new stuff.

I think it's great, it's basically a compilation of the three recent EPs they did collaborating with other artists, plus a couple of new tracks. There's a lot of really fun music, plus some gorgeous stuff as well!

As for how it compares, its nature means it's fairly different - a bit more varied perhaps. Also, Vicious Delicious and Legend of the Black Shawarma both had quite a strong rock influence, whereas they've mostly moved back away from that on their last couple of releases. In terms of the quality of the songs, though, I would personally say it's just as good.

I'd never heard of it - Double Click was one of their singles, so looks like Dream Theatre is the b-side from that.

Next up on my schedule is Movement in Detroit for my second year. My body is ready.

This year I've been getting into a lot of electronic music, afters years of ignoring the genre with the odd exception here and there. Oh boy, how much I regret it - I've discovered tons of amazing stuff these last months. Just out of curiosity, what are your favourite electronic albums? Mine would be:

1) Infected Mushroom - Vicious Delicious (Psy-trance/Rock)
2) DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.... (Instrumental Hip-Hop/Sampling)
3) Kashiwa Daisuke - Program Music I (Modern Classical/Glitch/Traditional Japanese)
4) Blue Sky Black Death - Late Night Cinema (Trip-Hop/Instrumental Hip-Hop)
5) Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman (Trance/Techno)
6) Burial - Untrue (Dubstep/UK Garage/Downtempo)
7) Daft Punk - Discovery (French House/Electro-Disco)
8) Anamanaguchi - Dawn Metropolis (Chiptune/Rock)
9) The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole (Big Beat/Breakbeat)
10) Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible (Psybient/World Music)

Daft Punk all their albums except Human after all
Avalanches Since I left you
Baths Obsidian
Blackmill Don't like his full albums, but like songs
Com Truise Galactic Melt
Deadmau5 Random album title
Hotline miami soundtrack
Jai Paul his album aint even out yet
Kauf as much again

Two additions I forgot about

Paul Oaknenfold Voyage into trance
Tycho Dive
KMFDM Symbols (techno/metal and one of my favorite bands ever)

I've loved Electronic for about 6 years now, but my entire teenage years, I never thought I would get into this genre. I just burned myself out sooo much on prog, that I needed to go WAY in the opposite directino.

I'm digging it too. I seem to be a fairly unusual IM fan in that I generally think they're better at the more energetic stuff, and much prefer IM the Supervisor onwards than anything before it. That said, the new one is a great mix of their old and new stuff and has some killer tracks!

You're not the only one - I don't really dig their old stuff, and consider Vicious Delicious their top record, which is in my all-time top 10. But I'm loving how this one is crafted. It really sounds like they've spent years working on it.

It's hard to pick a top IM album, but I went with CV 1 on my top 50 albums list, but IM the Supervisor and Classical Mushroom are definitely up there too.  And for an all time favorite track, Dancing with Kadafi on the BP Empire CD is hard to beat.  10 minutes of awesomeness, some might even say it's prog EDM.

For the most part, I like the Infected Mushroom without vocals much better.  (Becoming Insane and Saeed are notable exceptions of their excellent vocal tracks.)  This one and Liquid Smoke actually make me excited about a new release from them for the first time in several albums.  Their direction just hasn't been my cup of tea since Legend of the Black Shawarma.  Even Converting Vegetarians 2, which got me excited at the prospect, was a big let down.  Hopefully this release is represented well by the 2 singles they've released so far.

I would love to spend a night with a modular synth just creating patches all night long.  :D

I have a couple of synths that are semi-modular.  I've thought many times about going full-blown down the rabbit hole, but modular synths seem to be one of the most expensive money sinks you can get into in music, and I already have way more gear that I don't use enough as it is, so I've held off.

Electronic music is probably my second or third favorite genre.  I spent a lot more time on it than metal especially in the 10s.  The vastness of it is so daunting though, I still barely have a handle on it even compared to metal.  The synth-wave/dark-synth movement in the past decade has been one of my favorite scenes, with so many great artists like Perturbator, Megadrive, The Midnight, Lazerhawk, Volkor X, FM-84, Dead Astronauts, NINA, etc.

As many times as I've listened to Mezzanine, I've never really bothered to look up the credits for who is on it, which is kind of unusual for me.  This is a blow.  I'll have to spin it again and pay attention to his parts more.
