Just wanted to dedicate a thread to the "other DT": the supremely heavy and melodic Dark Tranquillity. :metal As much as I love In Flames, Dark Tranquillity has managed to stay much closer to their Gothenburg roots.
New album due Feb 2010: We Are The Void
Also, anyone pick up the new DVD: Where Death Is Most Alive?
-
:2metal: :2metal: :2metal:
My favorite album is Damage Done. I'm looking forward to the new CD; I thought Fiction was great.
I saw a preview of the DVD, but was interested enough to buy it.
-
Love 'em. Definitely the most consistent band that started the "Gothenburg" sound. It's interesting to watch their evolution from album to album, but each one has been very well done. Their lyrics are highly poetic and they are all very skilled musicians. :metal :metal Can't wait for the new album and I'm getting their live DVD for Christmas
My ranking:
The Gallery
Projector
Fiction
Damage Done
Haven
Skydancer
Character
The Mind's I
-
I've heard select songs from Damage Done, Fiction, Character and The Gallery. :metal :metal Can't wait to check 'em out with Killswitch Engage and The Devil Wears Prada. Pretty funny they're opening, cause they're more heavier than both those bands, especially before TDWP.
Favorite songs so far. Ex Nihilio, Terminus(Where Death Is Most Alive), The Gallery, and many more soon to come. Haven't found any albums here which is a bummer.

Dark Tranquility opening for The Devil Wears Prada represents all that is wrong with the state of music.
-
Fuckin love these guys. :metal
Terminus, The Sun Fired Blanks, and Final Resistence are my favorite songs by them.
-
I love Dark Tranquillity. Am hopefully getting the DVD for Christmas

Looks like they have around 3 new songs up. Only listened to Dream Oblivion, and it's fucking amazing. I hope We Are the Void ends up being similar to Fiction in that they create even more beautiful music. Inside the Particle Storm is one of the most epic songs i've ever heard.
-
I hope it's similar to Fiction, it's my favourite DT record.
Hrm, "DT" Dream Theater / Dark Tranquillity could get confusing.
-
Like the single...even if the video is frankly ridiculous
-
Oh that chorus is downright awesome.
-
One of my favorite bands. Their songs never fail to get my head banging.
-
I love how well written their new material is. The keyboards are subtle, production is great, and overall it just sounds awesome. They really have taken Melodic Death Metal to a different level. Most of their songs have the basic verse/chorus formula, yet they manage to do so much with it.
-
I REALLY like what I have heard of the new album. :2metal:
I am seeing them one month from today!
-
Just got back from their concert with Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada, and especially for us only Unearth. One of the best concerts in my life so far. The energy was great and everybody loved all the bands. I was amazed how many Dark Tranquillity fans are here
-

I think they had the best stuff of the night.

Is Hojo back singing for Killswitch yet?
-
I just bought Haven today. It's one of DaTr (DT might lead to confusion :P) most underrated albums. I also love Damage Done, Fiction and of course The Gallery. We Are the Void is also a pretty great album.
-
WatV is good, some people are criticising it but I like it.
The DVD is all kinds of awesome
-
Criticising? It's giving Fiction a run for it's money for me!
-
Nowhere near as good as Fiction for me.
I just realised the other day that this band are one of only a select few whom I'd say have two stone cold classic albums in "Fiction" and "The Gallery"
-
It always takes me a week to fully appreciate a DT album, and around a month to absolutely love it. But so far this is getting my best first reaction to a DT album yet, songwriting is top notch on this album, and I am glad keyboards are getting much more love.
-
I already mentioned this in the chat thread, but last night after their set, the band came out to hang out, sign stuff, and chat with the few of us fans that were out there, and a friend and I told them we wished they could have played longer (they played maybe six or seven songs), and Mikael or Martin - I can't remember - told us they were probably coming back in May for a headlining tour!
-
okay, so i stumbled into this thread and these guys sound interesting.
so, uh, where do i start with D-Tranq? is there a must-have album? a youtube link or two wouldn't hurt either.
-
Start with Character, it's a very good representation of what DT offer in most of their albums. It has the aggressive metal of The Gallery, the tight production of all their recent material, and the textures and layers of Fiction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZqfH1LQEOQ
-
I concur with Poseidon. Although Damage Done was my first DT album, Character is what really pulled me in.
-
Yesterday was the Dark Tranquillity Concert here in Bogotá. I wanted to go so badly, not only because I love DaTr, but also because The Agonist, another one of my favorite bands, a band whose coming to my city I expected for more than a year, was their opener.
I couldn't go because I had the final exam of my career's most important subject in College.
Now I am a sad panda.
A sad, sad panda.
:sadpanda:
-
I sympathise. That must have been horrible, knowing you could have seen Dark Tranquillity.
-
At least they didn't open for Killswitch and The Devil Wears Prada, the place was packed for DT.
-
FICTION WOOO BEST ALBUM BY DT
-
You gonna hit the Underworld to see them in September mr. faemir?
And yes Fiction is the best, narrowly over The Gallery
-
Can't, going to Australia D:
-
Dark Tranquillity > Australia
Nah, seriously, that'll be well good, possibly better than the show! :yarr
-
Reminds me, I need to find out who from DTF is cool and lives in Australia.
Oh and Punish My Heaven is quite possibly the best song evar by DT.
-
I actually think Inside The Particle Storm is probably my all-time fave. Dunno why, just sorta is.
-
The chorus is absolutely stunning :hefdaddy
-
I really like it when Mikael goes for a more 'raspy', for want of a better word, vocal approach. Like in Arkhangelsk as well (best song off WATV)
-
Man this thread is way too dormant for such a great band, the other great DT. :metal
There's been some discussion here, but what's DTF's opinion on We Are the Void? I'm pretty divided on it. On one hand tracks like The Fatalist and Her Silent Language are among the best they've ever produce (the later might be my all-time favorite, just beautiful :hefdaddy). On other hand tracks like Arkhangelsk and I am the Void leaves me cold and I find myself skipping them a lot.
-
It's been nearly two years since the last post in this thread, but I think it's finally time to reanimate it since DT have released a new song from their upcoming album.
For Broken Words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTkwuyb_PLc
Not sure if I like it though :-\
-
It's okay but hasn't swayed me. My hype for this album is on ridiculous levels since the word "Projector" has been mentioned a lot of times describing it and Projector is my second favorite DT album.
-
I think that song is too focused on atmosphere than actual good riffs. Still looking forward to Construct though.
-
Just listened to it for the third time. I began to somewhat like it, but I really miss some memorable moments and, as adace already said, good riffs.
I'm happy they finally did a major change in their sound again, but I'm not too pleased with the result. But it's only one song and my excitement for the new album is still growing :tup
-

Ah man, Arkhangelsk is arguably my favorite song on the album.
I like that album a lot.

New song: https://www.metalsucks.net/2013/04/25/exclusive-track-premiere-dark-tranquillitys-the-science-of-noise/ (https://www.metalsucks.net/2013/04/25/exclusive-track-premiere-dark-tranquillitys-the-science-of-noise/)
Not bad. I like it better than the first one they released.
-
sounds great!
-
A pretty euphoric review: www.soundshock.net/index.php/cd-reviews/4883-dark-tranquillity-construct-album-review
Interesting to hear about clean vocals playing an important role in the album :tup
-
My third post in a row here, but DT released a new music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BolGeBNPK1w
I hope somebody still reads this thread :D
EDIT: I'd say these are Stanne's best clean vocals ever !
-
Well, I'm not overly familiar with "the other DT", but it sounds good to me. I would never have thought he had such a nice clean voice.
-
I haven't seen it yet, and I can't put my headphones on for another ten minutes :sadpanda: I lovelovelove Mikael's cleans, in Projector and in general. More cleans = me a happy puppy.
-
I liked that song quite a bit. Has kind of a doomy feel to it. The clean vocals work really well in it.

Oh yes. Yes, they do :heart
-
Just noticed that samples are up on UK Itunes. Gonna check em out now.
Edit: They sound pretty cool. :metal
-
For once I'm getting into a band at the right time :lol I've been listening to We Are the Void lately and I like it a lot, and Uniformity sounds awesome too - I need to get the new album when it comes out :metal
-
That was a really nice tune! I will check the album out.

So excited now :caffeine:
-
same here :caffeine:
one of the best shows I saw last year!
-
I wonder how many different versions there will be with different 'bonus' tracks?
Listening to the previews on Australian iTunes, sounds good, our version is 12 songs.
-

Besides from the standard one disc edition there seems to be a two disc version with two bonus tracks on the second disc.
-
I've listened to the new album twice now and I think it's a major step up from the last one.
The standouts so far (besides the tracks that were already released) are Apathetic, What Only You Know (those clean vocals :hefdaddy), and Weight of the End.
Another great album from a great band :tup
-
After one listen (and I will have to force myself not to listen to it again until I own a physical copy), I gotta say I'm seriously impressed. Mikael's vocals (especially the cleans) are incredible, every song is interesting and unique and the whole atmosphere of the album is just amazing. Now it sucks even more that I won't be able to get my hands on an actual copy until about a week after the release date :-\
-
I got my copy today in person from Utopia Records in Sydney, Australia.
They have the US import, digipak with 2 bonus tracks and that brutally horrible alien cover.
Have to say it does sound different so far :metal

Are you "gaz" from the UM forums? :D
-
No, not at all, in any way, shape or form :yarr
What gave you that idea?
-
Pretty much the same thing you posted here was posted there in the "2013:CONSTRUCT" (or something like that) thread :)
ENDTIME HEARTS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bx-okDZYw4
-
Just heard the bonus track "Immemorial." It's awesome, kinda reminds me of Insomnium. And "Photon Dreams" is a really dark instrumental piece.
-

Sounds good to a DarkT noob like me :D

Previously unreleased song: m.soundcloud.com/decibelmagazine/dark-tranquillity-sorrows

https://www.decibelmagazine.com/featured/decibrity-playlist-mikael-stanne-dark-tranquillity-part-1/
Look at Mikael's third pick ;D
-
Just saw it :D you can tell by the album they were listening to prog back then :heart
-
Yeah, I've also read an interview where Mikael said Jivarp has been influenced by Dream Theater and Rush.
-
Second part of Mikael's playlist: https://www.decibelmagazine.com/featured/decibrity-playlist-mikael-stanne-dark-tranquillity-part-2/
There's some prog again ;) I'm not surprised he likes Depeche Mode, since he's the one who wrote Day to End and his clean voice reminds me a bit of Dave Gahan.
-
Bumping this so that the "what are you listening to" thread won't go completely off-topic :D Album ranking time:
Haven
Projector
Damage Done
Construct
The Gallery
Fiction/We Are the Void (can't decide which one is better)
Character
The Mind's I
I haven't heard Skydancer yet, but I'll probably buy it and an accompanying shirt in a couple of days.
-
:lol okay here we go (still don't own all of them):
#1 Fiction (10/10 for me, absolutely incredible)
#2 Character
#3 Projector
#4 Construct
#5 Haven
#6 Damage Done
Not sure about We Are The Void since I've only listened to it once on Spotify and don't have it yet on CD.
-
The Gallery is a milestone of melodic death metal and definitely worth buying! It also includes Mikael's best screams :metal However, not getting The Mind's I isn't a huge loss - there are some great songs but also a huge amount of filler. Character still hasn't clicked with me, it feels like there aren't enough great melodies.

I'll definitely get all of them, but there are just waaay to many albums on my albums-to-buy list, so it will take some time :D
Character was my first DT album and I didn't really like it for over a year, until it just clicked a couple of months ago. Songs like The New Build, The Endless Feed, Lost To Apathy, Senses Tied and My Negation are absolutely incredible IMO.
-
Okay, let's go then :D
The Gallery
Fiction/Projector
Haven
Damage Done
(probable place for Construct)
We Are The Void
Character
Skydancer (has some pretty cool songs on there)
The Mind's Eye
-
I've only heard of Construct so far, recommendations for my next album?
-
It depends on what you want to hear... The earlier albums are traditional Gothenburg metal with aggression, but also lots of guitar harmonies and acoustic moments. Projector has more clean vocals than any other release, Haven only has one song with them but it's also really melodic. The later albums are more up-tempo and aggressive, but the electronic elements are also strong. The clean vocals came back on Fiction.
-
If don't explicitly want an album with the traditional Gothenburg sound, I'd say Fiction is the best representation of their later stuff. It has the clean vocals and guitar melodies of Projector, the keyboards and "melodic growls" of Haven, the catchiness of Damage Done and the aggression and electronic effects of Character. It's also (in my opinion of course) their strongest and most consistent album to date.
-
I think Fiction has a few weaker songs (hence the relatively low position in my ranking), but it's a good introduction album indeed.

Which ones? I personally can't think of any.
EDIT: 1000th post, woohoo :D
-
Congrats on the 1000th post! :D
I'm not too keen on Blind at Heart, Icipher and Empty Me. They are all kind of forgettable IMO. That said, the rest of the album is really great :metal
-
My Negation is too epic for this world :letam: :2metal: :metal
If The New Build wasn't absolutely perfect, MN would surely be my #1 DT song :heart
-
Cornered is my #1 :heart
Today I bought a CD + T-shirt combo of Skydancer (the CD also includes Of Chaos and Eternal Night)! :metal I'll listen to the album tomorrow.
-
Freaking Haven fan :D
Haven is fantastic. I won't deny that.
-
I'm a sucker for atmosphere and melancholy :D
-
I just noticed that "there's something out there
lost behind the power linesssssaaaahh" from Senses Tied might be my favourite "oouuuaaaaaah" vocal moment out of all the DT material :lol :D
-
Haven grows on me with every listen, whereas my enthusiasm for Projector seems to come to a bitter halt (:neverusethis:). My revised rankings:
1. Fiction
2. Character
3. Construct / Haven (can't decide)
5. Projector
6. Damage Done
-
My ranking has basically remained the same, except that now I've heard Skydancer and would put it between Character and The Mind's I. I also think I may prefer Fiction to WATV.
-
Damage Done (nothing will surpass it for me, i don't think. first DT record, love every song, even the outtakes)
Construct (obviously REALLY impressed with this one, and it was really immediate, too)
Character (less stellar all the way through than the above)
Projector (i really, really dig their style alterations on this)
The Gallery / The Mind's I (classics but i need to learn them better)
Haven (mostly for "The Wonders at Your Feet;" i find a lot of the melodies are 'happier' in major keys all over the record, so i find it hard to enjoy this one as much as the above)
Fiction / We are the Void (don't know these well enough, kinda fell off the bandwagon in these years)
-
Haven (mostly for "The Wonders at Your Feet;" i find a lot of the melodies are 'happier' in major keys all over the record, so i find it hard to enjoy this one as much as the above)
I can't remember any part of any song on Haven being in major key or sounding even relatively happy  However, I find the mood of the whole album pretty sad, the keyboards have a big role and the guitars aren't tuned down to C# like on most albums, which makes it sound a bit light compared to the aggressive nature DT's music usually has. This doesn't bother me though :D
-
Someone tell me that At Loss For Words is a happy song :D
-
straight up, compare the melodies and harmonic movement (not the lyrics, it's strictly how they wrote the music i'm talking about) on Haven to about any other record, but let's say Construct in particular, since it's an extremely stark comparison. Construct is bleak in comparison; they were tapping into some serious doom metal vibes on that one, though obviously their tempos stayed fast. listen to the way the music of "Uniformity" is formed: semitones backed with fifths, parallel movement in the keyboards with the guitars and bass, it's all extremely desolate and negative. throw on "The Wonders at Your Feet" and it's the exact opposite (an observation of the band's prowess across the entire mood spectrum!): electronica keyboard voices playing catchy, friendly melodies under happier guitar leads and harmonic choices. listen to what the guitars play in the verses (or maybe it's a pre-chorus) after the rhythm-section-keys-vocals part — total change in mood, but it's not depressing, bleak, or even neutral; it's still 'happier' even though the song got heavier and deeper (probably a feeling aided by Anders switching to the toms-heavy beat) compared to "Uniformity." this happens all over Haven.
of course it has unhappy songs, it wouldn't be a DT record without; but even those songs have 'happy' harmonic writing — check out 1:40ish of "At Loss for Words" and tell me the harmonic change under the keyboard melody is sad or even neutral despite the overall track having a mood best described as unhappy (and less happy than the rest of the record, compositionally speaking). this is what i'm talking about; even in the epic album ender that covers lots of emotional territory, it's still absolutely covered in that writing style, whereas a track like "Monochromatic Stains" completely avoids it in every single possible way. it's something intrinsic to Haven that i personally don't like very much, and it's cool that lots of people do. i don't need to OK every compositional move they make, but it doesn't mean i have to like them all either.
it's how they were composing at the time, and it held over a bit into Damage Done ("Cathode Ray Sunshine" would have easily fit on Haven) but DD has a much broader mood spectrum representation in comparison, which is part of why i like it a lot more.
-
Now that's a thorough analysis... :o
I still don't think Haven has any happy moments and Emptier Still is one of their most depressive songs ever IMO (and one of my favorites). Maybe bittersweet or wistful would be a good description of the mood of the album? However, I agree that Cathode Ray Sunshine sounds like it could've been on Haven, which is probably why it's my favorite song on DD. I've also noticed the doomy and slightly dissonant vibe on Construct and it became especially clear when I started learning Uniformity on guitar.
-
You can listen to and buy the newly remastered Skydancer and Of Chaos and Eternal Night digitally here: https://darktranquillity.bandcamp.com/
In the FB post they said the remastered Skydancer will also be available on CD... Dammit, every time I buy some old album it gets reissued immediately after that! :lol

Think I'll get skydancer.
That same thing happens to me. I find it funnier when I buy an album online then decide to randomly check out a record store and find that same album...yet when I go when I want to get a cd, nothing.
-
Realisation of the day: Fiction is still a perfect album :2metal: :hearts:
And Haven is still growing on me. It even comes close to replacing Character at #2 for me now.
-
I found two live recordings from the Projectour (the tour wasn't called that way, but I like puns) - here's an early version of Misery in Me played in Japan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1en7sHE0KBs) and here's a live video of Freecard from France (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2_cyLK0GvA).
-
Another cool discovery from Youtube: Mikael playing guitar! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlkw9ip3gik#t=7m16s) I wonder why he didn't do that at the DVD shoot in Milan...
-
Tour trailer (includes setlist spoilers) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUdNk3vohBg&feature=youtu.be)
Can't wait to see them in Helsinki! :caffeine: For those who weren't curious enough to watch the part where you can see the setlist paper slowed down in HD, the last 4 song titles are
White Noise/Black Silence
The Silence in Between
What Only You Know
State of Trust
The news that the girl from Tristania will sing on some dates of the tour makes me believe at least one of the songs Mikael wanted to play (https://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2013/05/02/mikael-stanne-of-dark-tranquillity-the-heavy-blog-is-heavy-interview/) will be in the setlist
-
And I won't be able to see them :-[ :'( >:( :censored :( :tdwn :marriageanalogy:
-
Big fan of this band right here! :metal
I think Construct is one of the strongest metal releases so far this year, along with Soilworks Living Infinite.
Id love to see these guys live, but Tampere is not in their tour-calender this year. :censored
-

Yeah, that sucks, but I HAVE to see them, so I'll just travel to Helsinki. Hopefully they won't ignore Tampere next time...

Yeah, that sucks, but I HAVE to see them, so I'll just travel to Helsinki. Hopefully they won't ignore Tampere next time...
Yeah, hopefully they play in pakkahuone, with their next tour cycle.
-
Guess I might have to travel to denver
-
I just realized that Mikael has a Rush shirt on and Anders is wearing a Riverside shirt in the tour trailer :D
-
I just realized that Mikael has a Rush shirt on and Anders is wearing a Riverside shirt in the tour trailer :D
I read that interview that was recently posted and then saw the trailer. I laughed and thought it was cool.
-
They'd come to my town w/Omnium Gatherum on Thursday, but 22 euros is kinda much for me. :(
-
C'mon, I bet there aren't that many great gigs in Joensuu too often  Besides, the tickets are 4,50€ cheaper than for the Tavastia show :P
-
OK, I got a ticket. I'll look at their most recent setlists for what they might play, since I only know Fiction album and The Wonders at Your Feet.
-
They'll start the world tour in Turku tonight, so the setlist may change quite a lot (or at least the tour trailer hints so).
-
OK, thanks for info, didn't knew that.
But seems like TWAYF is one of their most played songs, so I'll have a good chance to hear it live.
-
Yeah, they rarely leave TWAYF out of headlining sets, so it'll probably be played. It may be boring for longtime fans to hear it every time, but I've never seen DT live before and I love that song, so I wouldn't mind hearing it :metal
-
First of all, this post will contain some spoilers.
Yeah, I had good time last night. Omnium Gatherum was very good, they play melodic death metal with some progressive edge, I think they sound a bit like Dark Tranquillity.
DT was great. Anders had a Moving Pictures shirt. :metal Mikael was very energetic and clearly in a good mood, thanking the audience numerous time and complementing Finnish beer they had been supplied onstage. Behind the band was a screen, where images supporting the music were projected. And it's kinda weird they don't have a bassist at a moment, but the music worked well without a bass anyway.
Setlist:
Science of Noise
unknown, something off Construct probably?
What Only You Know
Lost in Apathy
The Fatalist? (I'm not completely sure, but I remember a line "The day has come")
The Silence In Between
Lethe
The Mundane and the Magic
Monochromatic Stains
The Wonders at Your Feet
Indifferent Suns
Silence, and the Firmament Withdrew
Terminus (Where the Death Is Most Alive)
State of Trust
Endtime Hearts
ThereIn
Final Resistance
Misery's Crown
For me the highlights were The Mundane and the Magic (have they ever played it with that woman?), The Wonders at Your Feet (before the guitar solo Mikael sang "These are the wonders, Joensuu"), Terminus, State of Trust, Endtime Hearts, ThereIn and Misery's Crown.
I got some pictures with shitty quality, I'll try to upload them later. And I got to shake hands with Martin Brandström, the bald guitarist (Martin Henriksson?) and Mikael Stanne.
-
Judging by the recent setlists, the second song was probably White Noise/Black Silence. Or if it was a new song, then it's probably Uniformity. Cool that you heard Indifferent Suns and got to shake hands with the guys! :o
The Mundane and the Magic (have they ever played it with that woman?)
Yes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8b7toEIv1Q
-
No, it wasn't Uniformity. I'm pretty sure it was based on F# minor key, but I don't remember anything else about it.
And that shaking hands thing... I was pretty near the stage and after the set they just came to the front stage and shook hands with everyone near. I didn't meet them or anything.
-
I'm pretty sure it was based on F# minor key, but I don't remember anything else about it.
Then it has to be WN/BS.
And yeah, I thought you probably just shook hands with the guys instead of meeting them after the show. The Tavastia gig is almost sold out, so I probably won't get to be close to the stage :-[ That doesn't make me any less excited though :caffeine:
-
I think I just experienced the best gig I've ever seen :hefdaddy
-
Did you get any video?
-
Nope, but I did take some blurry photos with my phone. I'll post them and a report later.
-
Ok, here's my report...
This was the first time I've attended a gig in Helsinki; the next will be in February when I see another DT live ;D The show took place at the legendary Tavastia club and it was sold out. OmG were alright and they got a good reception from the crowd (which already was pretty big by this point). DT started almost 10 minutes before the official showtime, which didn't bother me one bit :D The music played over the PA before their performance must've been picked by the band, since we heard some electronic stuff and The Depth of Self-Delusion by Riverside :P
The setlist was mostly the same as the one Ruba posted above, but we got Zero Distance instead of Lethe and Final Resistance. Mikael has to be the best frontman I've seen on stage - the amount of energy he has is unbelievable :hefdaddy Too bad I wasn't close enough to the stage to shake his hand :-\ He was seemingly amazed by the reception they got, saying "kiitos" after many songs and repeating "It can't get any better than this!". After both Indifferent Suns and The Firmament Mikael was like "You guys recognized that song? Awesome!"
The screen projections were definitely cooler than just a basic backdrop would've been. The lack of bassist was kind of weird, but the performance worked well in spite of that. The backing track could've been a bit louder on some songs, but luckily you could clearly hear the bass on Indifferent Suns, because the bass line is so crucial to that song.
I had a long-sleeved shirt on and I didn't drink anything the whole night, so I was pretty sweaty after the show :lol But hey, isn't that what rock music is all about? :D There was some moshing in the crowd, but I stayed away from the pit and kept some distance in order to avoid getting pushed. Seeing some guy attempt to clap his hands to the rhythm of the music in the 7/4 section in Zero Distance was comical. I bought a nice T-shirt with the tour dates on it after the gig.
A couple of pics I took during the verses of What Only You Know (the pics I took during some heavier moments of the show are pretty blurry thanks to Mikael's hyperactivity :lol):

This cover is pretty awesome :o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqz3s1koYy4
In recent interviews Mikael has said they're gonna tour both North America and Europe again in the fall - can't wait to see them again! :caffeine:
-
Nice. Saw them in Denver back in February. Awesome show. I was especially excited to see Omnium Gatherum support them, as it was their first tour in the States, even though they've been around for years.
I didn't know the bass player (of DT) quit though! I was so confused the first minute or so of the show. Never seen a metal band use a backing track just for bass. :lol
-
Oh yeah, it's weird but they manage to make it work :D
-
I haven't listened to DT in a long time, decided to give WATV a spin and it sounded way better than I remember.
I have since loaded 7 of their albums to my ipod for further investigation.
A really incredibly consistent band that never seems to make a bad album.
Also killer live act.

:iagree:

Ok, good news and bad news. The album's nearly done in terms of writing...
but one of the founding members left.

Looks like Henriksson never recovered from that writer's block... :-\ Sad to hear the man who wrote classics like Lethe and Final Resistance has lost his inspiration. I also remember that in the documentary on Where Death is Most Alive they said the founding members had grown up in the same street and been friends since childhood, and it made me feel like these guys were inseparable.
Anyway, I'm confident the band will survive even without Martin, because Sundin, Jivarp and Brändström are all great writers and came up with pretty much all of the material on Construct already.
-
Yeah sad to see him going, but as you said they still have very strong songwriters in the band, with Brändström being my fave.
I've loved his writing and keyboard melodies for a long time now.

I've heard Atoma a few times, and I'm surprised they didn't pick the title-track as the lead single, because it's like the new Wonders at Your Feet and has got clean vox in the verses. It's a little early for me to say anything about the album, but I'd say it's more diverse and perhaps a little more keyboard-driven than Construct and includes a few atypical DT songs. The bonus tracks are... interesting!

Not sure if "more keyboard-driven" will be an accurate observation because Construct has plenty of that. However, based on comments of another journalist I'm expecting this to be a bit more aggressive and faster in overall tempo.

Yeah, my first impression was "wow, so many keyboards", but I haven't listened to Construct in a while so there may not be a lot more of them after all. :lol But the person you're referring to is right, because there are more fast and aggressive songs this time around, though there are also more clean vocals.

Great song. Records gonna kick ass.
-
New song sounds exactly like Construct. I'm good with that as long as it's as consistent as that record.

Sounds killer, DT are so consistently good.

I interviewed Mikael Stanne (https://www.musicalypse.net/dark-tranquillity-mikael-stanne-2016/) last week about about Atoma and his love for prog, among other things. What a nice guy! :)
-
Good song, but that wasn't a great video.
-
atoma is awesome! :metal
-
I had a quick listen yesterday, sounds really promising.
MS vocals are amazing, he's singing a lot more cleans on this and when they are mixed with the growls, no one comes close to him.
There's lots of melodies, some great keyboards, some cool riffs and killer songs.
I expected nothing less too :metal
-
I'll wait to buy the album till the show this Sunday. Gonna be a good one too since its at an intimate place. Way better than when I first saw them as an opening act, that was like a sample. Now we get the full course.
-
Encircled is such a cool song. Stumbled upon it on Spotify today. Will definitely give Atoma some more attention.

This was sad to read:
One of us is gone.
Fredrik Johansson passed away on January 25th after a three-year long battle with cancer.
He joined Dark Tranquillity in ’93, right after the recording of our first album “Skydancer”. He replaced me as guitarist so that I could focus on singing, and with that he raised the bar and set the course for what we could do and wanted to be. His influence and passion had an absolutely massive impact. The first song that we wrote together was something we ended up calling “Punish my Heaven”, and with that we knew that we were on a path that we up until then had only dreamed of.
Fredrik was mercilessly funny, sharp and highly intelligent, and would light up a conversation with his amazingly positive and quick witted commentary. But also, as easily, he would tear an uninformed argument or opinion apart with well articulated and thoroughly researched logic. His sense of humor and adventure would more often than not lead to epic excursions in stupidity and madness that I will forever miss.
Fredrik left the band in ’99 to focus on his family, yet he remained our biggest fan and our fiercest critic. His insights into the direction of our music was invaluable and knowing that he always listened and cared about what he had been part of creating meant the world to us.
A recent story, that speaks volumes about his personality, is when we launched the album “Moment” with a streamed concert in 2020. For weeks ahead of the release, Fredrik was on our Facebook page making sure that those who did not have access to a credit card or simply could not afford it would be able to see the show as well. By personally paying a ticket for those who weren’t able to, Fredrik made sure that no-one was left without. That’s who he was.
Having known about his cancer battle for almost three years and having dealt with the fact that this day would eventually come doesn’t make it any less real. We all still feel it. And we always will.
Living without you in this world will be radically different and not even close to as interesting and curiously fun as it has been with you in it. On behalf of the entire Dark Tranquillity family, we love you Fredrik and we will miss you forever.
We start our US tour today and by playing the songs that Fredrik wrote and helped create we aim to keep his name and musical legacy alive. He was one of us and we love him.
”It is what it is, and what will be will be” as Fredrik used to say might serve as a reminder that our time here is nothing but temporary and we should make the most of the beautiful personal connections we have and treasure the people that we have surrounded us with.
Tons of love from all of us to Fredrik's wife and three daughters.
Mikael Stanne and all of Dark Tranquillity

Yeah just read it on FB, very sad, sounded like he was a magnificent musician and an even greater human being.

Just read it too...very sad indeed...
Reminded me of how great The Gallery is...

Mega bump!
New Dark Tranquillity Music. New album on August 16th! :metal
-
This is so much better than the last few albums! :metal
Stanne is firing on all levels - Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect, Grand Cadaver. Lots of great tunes from his bands over the last few years.
-
To me it sounds exactly like it could fit anywhere on Moment. That's not a bad thing for me though, I thought it was really good.
