We're still not sure how we're going to allocate songs to people, but to get a jump on things, if you're interested in writing for the project, sign up here.
If you don't know what the project is, we're trying to take a portion of DT's best songs based on the forum's ratings and write about each of them. Then we're going to post them on RYM.
For example: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScientist/atease_top_100_r_e_m__songs
EDIT: Deadline is Sunday, December 6th

tri.ad reporting in, sir.
-
I'm in. I enjoy expressing why I like songs, and there are several songs I feel strongly for that I doubt many others here will care as much about.
-
Right here.
-
Not sure what I'm signing up for... but ok...
-
Bow chicka wah wah.

*raises everything*
By the way, I merged the other thread into the main one, as we don't really need three threads about this. :lol
-
I'm in, and I want Eve, if nothing else (although I will gladly take something else as well, or instead, if Eve isn't highly ranked enough to make the cut).
-
I will.
-
Here's a bump.
I know some people who said they were interested but haven't signed up. Please do so ASAP!
-
I think you've figured out already I love writing longer posts concerning my love/hate/indifference for songs or albums, right? :D
I'm definitely in.
-
Red 5 standing by!
-
I'll do a couple.
zomg, we should start a Google Wave about it.
-
ZOMG! I'm in.
-
Not sure what it is, but if the task is select and write, I´m IN!
-
I'm in.

:hat

It'd be cool.
I'm IN
-
If you're short on people/song ratio, i can probably contribute.
Only if you guys let a DTF-noob like me join in on something like this, of course... I won't get grumpy if you think that these blurbs shall be written by more experienced members. I understand it too, if you want this to represent this forum in a proper fashion.
-
Oh didnt realize there was a separate thread for this.
I'm in for sure.
I just request The Great Debate, sir.
-
While we're suggesting songs... I'd deliberately injure myself if it were my only song, but I reckon I could do You Not Me justice.
-
I'm certainly up for it, I'll take a mid-40 song that no one wants, but I'm definitely interested.
-

Yeah, I'm up for one of these too.
I tend to quite like the toys that the other kids don't want (ugh, just TYPING that gave me diabetes and felt massively condescending, but it reminded me of the Raggydolls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI9rXx88YsA) so I'm keeping it even though it makes me sound like a complete twunt), so I'd rather do one of them than hog something that the vast majority of people would be up for.
-
I'd be happy to take anything out of CM/TDEN/SDOIT/ANTR. I seem to appreciate these ones more than most. For anything else there are probably others who have a much better chance of doing the songs justice.
-
Pick me a good one.
-
While we're suggesting songs... I'd deliberately injure myself if it were my only song, but I reckon I could do You Not Me justice.
We'll only be writing blurbs for the top however many (40 maybe?), so no need to worry about YNM :lol

Whoa, whoa.............
You Not Me isn't in the top 40? ??? I'd think it was at least top 10
-
Oh yeah, sorry, it's number 7, right behind Prophets of War.

lol I thought this was the Top 10 Great Songs, not the Top 10 Examples of Nick

Really?
I thought we would do all of them. I mean REM had the top 100, and DT doesn't even have that many. Would it really be that hard to do all of them?
-
The REM example only wrote for the top 50.
-
Metropolis right here!
-
Are we requesting songs, or will they be assigned at random and we'll hand them back if we can't say something good about them? If we're asking for songs, I'd like to request at least Home and These Walls. Home because it was my first experience with really heavy music that I enjoyed, and These Walls out of sentimental value.
-
The REM example only wrote for the top 50.
This.
They did a top 100, and wrote blurbs for the top 50. We're doing a full ranking for a start, including all the least liked songs, so it makes sense to cut it down to only the however-many most-liked.

Whoops, missed the "bottom 50 part".
Right, well, then top 50 works for me.

To get this rolling, I'm going to set the deadline for Sunday.
-
I'd still be up for some less popular ones.
-
Cool, I should have the final rankings done before then, so we can start delegating them out!
-
How should the descriptions go?
Are we taking personal opinion into the mix or just basically breaking it down?
-
Pretty much personal opinion, but descriptive, and about what makes the song good. As in not to say "I like the song", but describe the songs plus points.
-
I think it would be smart to give some less popular choices to those people who really like the song.
For example, Under a Glass Moon will make the list most likely, but it's not exactly a fan favorite, so give it to someone who really loves the song. That way while the list is a group consensus the descriptions of all the songs will be positive and helpful.
-
Yeah we're thinking of making sure whoever writes about the song rated it at least a 9 if possible. Obviously we may not be able to do that for every single song, but we'll give it a try!
-

The Dark Eternal Night is, according to the DTF, the most controversial song in the Dream Theater catalog, with a standard deviation of 2.491 from the mean. It's probably no coincidence the song is also one of their heaviest, featuring distorted vocals from James LaBrie and an instrumental breakdown that pays homage to classic horror films. However, the main draw of the composition is its chorus, which is undoubtedly one of the hookiest in the band's discography, etc.

In the other thread I listed UAGM as my 3rd favorite DT song, so I'll take a crack at it if that's OK . . .
Edit: Whoops! Quoted the wrong post. I meant to quote Nick.

Now we just need to get census data on each DTF member and really break the stats down.
-
As for song requests... I have only one - Home. I can also take anything else, I'd be especially happy with anything SFAM or SC (and I guess I'd better stay away from I&W because it wouldn't really reflect the common DTF opinion, except Wait for Sleep maybe).
-
These are due tomorrow - have assignments been made?

I'm pretty sure TOX meant sign-up deadline is tomorrow, rather than submitting reviews :lol

Whew.
-
I'm all like, eager to do something :metal
-
Yeah, how are we gonna do this?
It would make sense if it had something to do with our ratings in the other thread.
-
Alright. It looks like we're going to give people their pick of songs based on post count. And we're going to do a Top 40.
Does anyone have a problem with that method or the number of songs we're doing?
-
Although that means I'm pretty low in choice order it's a fair enough method.
-
We should do the Top 43.
-
Fair enough. I just hope I get TGD...
-

Nope.
-
No problems here, but if everyone with higher post counts than me wants to save Home for me...that'd be greatly appreciated. Because it was my first real introduction to heavy metal beyond the stereotype I associated with the genre I think I could write a good review of it. But if someone feels really strongly about it with a higher post count thats cool too. I'd be able to find something positive to say about most of the top 40 (or 43 if Hef gets his way :) )
-
::Goes and posts in every thread in order to raise post count and choose earlier::
Or, to prevent a plethora of worthless post-whoring, just save Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence for me :D
-
I think I could write a lot about any DT song, so I guess I'll just pick randomly when my turn comes around. I'm getting excited.
-
Ok, I'm fine with it. I think I can write about anything, except maybe most I&W songs (let's just say I'm not the best representation of DTF opinion :lol). I think I'll do fine with anything else. Although Home, Voices or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence would be very appreciated.
-
I'm hoping for Misunderstood...

Nah, go for it! Time for people to start shotgunning songs, I guess. Post our names in order of post count?
-
This is going to make things much less organized for me, but since you guys seem giddy I'm going to let it happen anyway...

I'd like Misunderstood, but I'm sure someone higher up will nab it because it's AWESOME. But yeah, if nobody else wants it I'll have a go at that.
-
I can has Trial of Tears?
-
I can has Trial of Tears?
EDIT: Jamesman should be included too. He requested a temp ban for studying
-
Since I'm just 17th on the list, these are seven songs, in order, that I'd be far more than happy to write about:
1. Home
2. Voices
3. Finally Free
4. The Root of All Evil
5. The Mirror
6. A Nightmare to Remember
7. The Shattered Fortress
This is a kind of "priority list" - if Home is taken, I'd like Voices, if it's taken then Finally Free etc. There are three songs I'd also like to write about - The Glass Prison, In The Name of God and Space-Dye Vest - but I feel I have far too little experience to take them, especially in the last case.
Edit: oh, right, skydivingninja wanted Home as well. Then, I'm fine with the rest. :)
-
I'll take "Learning to Live".
-
I can do anything but the demo songs and When Dream and Day Unite songs. Preferred songs being Glass Prison, In The Name Of God and Take The Time.
-
I'll take "Learning to Live".
Damn you emin, that's what I wanted :lol
I'll have to pick something else then...
-
I already messaged TOX, but just so you all know Octavarium will not be available to you.
-
Ok I'll take In the Name of God instead. :)
-
I'd really dig Stream of Consciousness if no-one snaps it up. Which, in all probability, they will! Lovely song though, in my top five.
-
*Hopes for Glass Prison*
-
*Hopes for Glass Prison*
I was so close to choosing that song (tied as my favourite) but I figured I could do better justice to SDOIT. Hope you can get it
-
Why are we only doing the top 40? I have no reasonable explanation. So again, if anyone has a better suggestion for how many we should do, please let me know.
I like top 40. Another idea I had was to do a top 25, and then have a few people write blurbs about lower ranked songs that they love.
I'd also love to do a separate list of the Top 10 most loved and hated songs. Basically have 2 people write 2 very different blurbs about the "controversial" songs with high standard deviations. ie, have KevShmev and Blob both write about Scarred. You can organize that too if you like, or I'll lead it.
-
When are the blurbs due?
-
Yeah we're thinking of making sure whoever writes about the song rated it at least a 9 if possible. Obviously we may not be able to do that for every single song, but we'll give it a try!
In the other thread I listed UAGM as my 3rd favorite DT song, so I'll take a crack at it if that's OK . . .
Edit: Whoops! Quoted the wrong post. I meant to quote Nick.
TOX, I requested UAGM back on the 3rd . . . still OK?
-
How long should these blurbs be?
-
I'll try and post an example of a "blurb" (even though it doesn't necessarily have to be just that. If you have many insights, it can be a few paragraphs) later today.
-
Take The Time
-
The Great Debate. Please and thanks.

And if you have all the info in the right place, finding the standard deviations should not be much trouble for you.

Top 20 most controversial songs (by standard deviation):
1. The Dark Eternal Night: 2.512
I'd love to try and champion The Dark Eternal Night. God knows I've had enough practice in the last month or so!
Alternatively, I'm fond of Sacrificed Sons, and I reckon I could do You Not Me justice. The rest I don't really have any strong opinions about either way, so that'd be an exceptionally dull read.
-
I'd love to write the positive for Regression and/or The Ministry of Lost Souls.
There are no songs I actually dislike for any reason (or have certain reasons for which I could dislike it, like the song-title-of-which-should-not-be-mentioned :P) on the list, so I think there'd be no point in me writing any negative ones.

Oh, poo.
Well, if you want to stick to 10, that's OK with me, Scurv. But in that case, I don't really want to do one.
-
When do you want our blurbs by?

I'll take pro on TDEN and negative on Scarred :lol
-
Well, if you want to stick to 10, that's OK with me, Scurv. But in that case, I don't really want to do one.
I was actually going to stick to 10, but not the top 10. Probably go with the ones that seem like they'll be most interesting. Starting a thread now.
-
List of songs I'd be fine writing about:
Lines in the Sand
Blind Faith
The Mirror
Hell's kitchen
Wait for Sleep
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
One Last Time
Preferences in bold. Also, to what extent are we doing this? Top 30, top 40, top 50?

Dagnammit. Could I take Disappear, Lines in the Sand or Surrounded if they're free? (in descending order of preference)
-
So it seems I get Finally Free. I'm very happy about it, I'll probably write it over the weekend :)
-
When are these due? I've got a ton going on this week.
-
Is there a complete list yet?
-
Hum...i´ve been out for a week and today I ran to the computer wondering if the proccess already started. It would be nice to know when we should have our paragraphs and maybe post them here for critics, maybe?
-
I wanted to write it a week ago but had some work to do and now it's Christmas so I was quite seriously lazy. I'll do it very soon, though.
-
I would guess many people have been pre-occupied with Christmas related stuff recently. If I knew we had to have them in, then of course I'd do it asap, but otherwise I've just had other things going on distracting me.
-
I sent some of you e-mails recently about the next few picks. Some replies would be appreciated! :yarr

I think people need to get back into this now that the holidays are done.
Because I know my writeup will be appearing first, I figured I'd share what I wrote to give people ideas, and to remind them of what they signed up for.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is perhaps Dream Theater’s album that draws the most varying opinions. Split into two vastly different discs (one a 5-song disc of mostly experimental songs, and one a disc featuring a 42 minute song following a more traditional prog metal style), there was sure to be some fans at odds with each other over what songs were “good”. Appropriately enough, The Great Debate is all about split opinions. Detailing one of the great debates of our time, stem-cells, lyricist John Petrucci takes neither side. Instead he opts to simply show both sides of the argument, all the while aided by samples from left and right-wing figures. As a side note: the right wing samples are played through the right speaker, and vice-versa.
The standout player here is easily drummer Mike Portnoy. Delivering what I believe to be his finest work in Dream Theater, Mike does not stop for a moment in this song. The layers of complex cymbal work, the creative fills, and the unconventional time signatures would have made this song a nightmare for any other drummer. James Labrie also proves to be a very adaptive vocalist. The verses are mostly distorted or sung with a sharper edge, while the choruses fit his more traditional high-register style. Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci both get to trade solos, as well.
Despite being among the top 40 Dream Theater songs, The Great Debate has a very split opinion among the fanbase (indeed). Common criticism is that the song becomes very sample-heavy during the intro and outro, which some find drags on for too long. I, for one, enjoy the different feel to the song, which is only heightened by being among the varied songs on the first disc of Six Degrees.

It looks like I can pick a second song, so I'll do it for 6:00
-
When does this whole thing go down? I just hope that I haven't been expected to turn one in yet because I haven't started writing it yet.
-
I already chose Learning to Live. I pass on doing another one.
-
I can has Trial of Tears?
EDIT: Jamesman should be included too. He requested a temp ban for studying
Oh dude, thanks for catching that for me and watching my back bro, I have The Shattered Fortress. o/
-
*\o
You know I got your back
-
I can't wait to write this up, I'll probably do it tonight.
-
I'm not gonna do a second song write-up. One is enough.
-
I would love to have a submission deadline, or else I'm never going to actually do it :p
-
Ok, its due by February 6th.
-
I'd be down for another.
-
Are there any rules or limits we should stick to?
-
If possible to do another I'd like to do Stream of Consciousness, and if that's not available then Raise the Knife or Strange DejaVu.
-
Someone let me know when my turn's up.
-
Guys, I apologize for being so lazy about this these past few weeks. My goal is to have everyone's assignments finished by Friday.
-
What happened to this? :(
-
Oh shit, totally forgot about it :lol
-
Am I the only one who actually did it?
-
I remember I wanted to, but just a few days later I left... if you decide to actually start it again, I'll do it.
-
Am I the only one who actually did it?
I'm reasonably sure I did mine.
-
I did mine.
