Ten Years Gone is just so.... that song is money.
Maybe some of you will appreciate this. I totally believe that Zeppelin's charm is their live performances. I had seen about 150 shows when I saw Page and Plant (including Plant solo and Page with the Firm) and they just elevated it to the next level. During "Calling To You", there was a vamp in the middle and the lights were low, the band was just sort of... bubbling behind Plant, who was mumbling some words (I know them now, I didn't then) and then - with a timing that was absolutely impeccable, I mean SPOT ON - he screams, with that Plant wail, "STOP, HEY, what's that sound, everybody look what's going down!" and the lights flashed, and the band kicked in... it sent actual literal shivers through me.
I know you'll think I'm nuts, but I swear I was cold sober when it happened (I don't get hammered for shows for this reason). They played "The Song Remains The Same" and in the mid-part and end-part, the band was just locked in, and when they were done, I felt like I had blacked out. It was like I went into a trance with the music. I looked at my buddy - the Zeppelin fan between us (at that point)- and we were both freaked out about what we just witnessed. To this day, it was the single greatest, transformative moment I've ever experienced in a live concert, and they both - together, moreso than separate, though Plant's recent work is FAR better than it gets credit for; it rivals some Zeppelin in my view - have an exalted position in my pantheon of musical greats. Page in particular is in my top three or so of greatest living musicians (McCartney is Number One).
-
tl:dr
Figure it says Page/Plant were awesome live.
I agree. Those shows were special, and I'm not even the biggest Zeppelin guy. Saw them twice, once at the old Boston garden and then again 6 months later after they opened the new one. Both shows were incredible. I remember the kid they had on drums was fantastic.
-
Michael Lee. Passed unfortunately. Played with Plant, the Cult, and Thin Lizzy.

Really? Wasn't he from Massachusetts? Didn't he also play with McCartney?
-
More than any classic rock band I OD'ed on in in my classic rock phase, I got so burned out on LZ. Between owning all their CDs and the massive radio airplay they got, I just lost all interest in them. With other bands that feeling goes away but it never really did here.
I can't listen to their Battle of Evermore because I only want to hear Heart's version.
-
Your Time Is Gonna Come
Four Sticks
No Quarter
How Many More Times
Battle of Evermore
Song Remains The Same
Though tbh most of these pale compared to most of my favorites which aren't here
-
I intentionally left off the ones that classic rock radio has played to death over the years.
-
One of my all time favorite Zeppelin tunes is one of their deepest cuts...Wearing and Tearing
-
How Many More Times
Since I've Been Loving You
The Song Remains The Same
The Rain Song
No Quarter
Ten Years Gone
Well, I picked the three from Houses Of The Holy (my favorite LZ album), and it seems like a lot of others voted for those three as well, as well as SIBLY, all four with 13 or more votes. I'm not huge into LZ but of these, which I had to listen back to on some of them, these six are easily my favorites of them. The ones from HOTH were easy picks, so picking 3 more was a bit more difficult, but HMMT is an early-Zep favorite of mine, and TYG is one of my fave tracks off Physical Graffiti.

My favorite early Zeppelin tune is Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.
-
Of the songs listed:
No Quarter
How Many More Times
In the Evening
The Battle of Evermore
The Song Remains the Same
Thank You
But 2 of my favorite songs that should be included in that list are Achilles' Last Stand and Carouselambra.
-
I like Carouselambra a lot, but there wasn't enough room for everything.
-

I appreciate that. I can't decide though if it made it harder or easier in this case.
-

Yet you left off my favorite of all time that got little airplay.
Achilles Last Stand.
-
Since I've Been Loving You is just about one of the prettiest things I've ever heard. I went to see Lez Zeppelin last night and they played it and I came a little.
My favorite early Zeppelin tune is Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.
Yess, one of my favorites too.
-
D’Yer Maker
-
Kudos to everyone that voted for In the Evening. :tup
-
Bring It On Home
No Quarter
Ten Years Gone
The Rover
The Wanton Song
Gallows Pole
-
Your time is gonna come is one of my all time favorite Zeppelin songs.

I don't know how they did it, but there's so much atmosphere in this song.

Achilles Last Stand.

Where's In The Light?
:sadpanda:
-
WE CAN ONLY PICK SIX??
-
Can't say I think too much of that list. I went with 4 Sticks, Evermore, Rover, and Song Remains. I was sad that Achilles Last Stand wasn't on the list. I like most of these songs well enough, but most not enough to call "favorites."
-
Bring It On Home
Four Sticks
How Many More Times
Ten Years Gone
The Battle of Evermore
The Wanton Song
-
Mostly just sticking with the ones I know:
Your Time Is Gonna Come
How Many More Times
The Battle Of Evermore
No Quarter
The Rover
Ten Years Gone
(Note: I've only heard 1, 4, Houses, Graffiti & Presence)
-
Yet you left off my favorite of all time that got little airplay.
Achilles Last Stand.
Achilles is my absolute all time favorite LZ song. That bass line.. oof. So mint. Anyhooooo..
The Wanton Song (dat beginning riff doe horry shet) :metal
The Rain Song
The Lemon Song
No Quarter (I love Tool's cover of this one too)
Nobody's Fault But Mine (Presence is criminally underrated)
-
Really? Wasn't he from Massachusetts? Didn't he also play with McCartney?
Not quite. He was from the North East of England and first came to notice as the drummer for Little Angels, who were a cracking wee British band from the late 80s/early 90s.
They were probably just a little too late appearing and from the wrong country, though. It's "sexy" being an LA based band... not so much hailing from Scarborough.
I remember seeing a live rendition of Page/Plant doing Gallows Pole with Michael Lee on drums and it was fantastic.
-
Presence is criminally underrated
I used to have a stereo with a "Presence" button. I kept pressing it in the hopes I would hear Achilles Last Stand, but it must have been broken.
Seriously, though, Achilles is far and away my favorite Zeppelin song, but the rest of Presence is just meh. Nobody's Fault is ok but more than a little repetitive, and the rest of the tracks are largely unmemorable.

I was holding off on this, but since so many people keep mentioning Achilles, I'll share again: I saw Temple of the Dog in Madison Square Garden last year, and they did a version of that song that left me breathless. They really captured that ebb and flow that the best Zeppelin had, where the tempo was a shade fluid, but it all held together. It was like the aural equivalent of a roller coaster car careening around the track.
-
Presence is a great album, mostly because some of the deep cuts rock as much as the epics. Royal Orleans and Hots for nowhere have some rather innovative beats and their fair share of hooks, and Candy store rock, though a bit silly, is still a fun song. Also, For your life used to be one of my least favorite Zeppelin song, and although it is slightly plain and vanilla in certain spots, it grew on me a bit since it was featured on Celebration day.

For Your Life is amazing on Celebration Day.
-
I guess it depends on your market, but some of those I discredited and didn't choose because they got plenty of air play in my neck of the woods over the years (Your Time Is Gonna Come, No Quarter, Nobody's Fault and In The Evening) all of which I like very much.
So I voted for of the lesser air play songs in
Bring It On Home ( A major favorite)
Four Sticks
Since I Been Loving You ( A major favorite)
How Many More Times
Ten Years Gone
The Rover
Here is a list of my additional favorites, of the lesser played songs that were not on your list.
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Friends
When The Levee Breaks
Dancing Days
In My Time Of Dying
Trampled Under Foot
In The Light
Achilles Last Stand
Tea For One
Carouselambra
I'm Gonna Crawl
-
Michael Lee. Passed unfortunately. Played with Plant, the Cult, and Thin Lizzy.
You left out his real band, the Little Angels. They were great.
-
Since I've Been Loving You
No Quarter
Ten Years Gone
The Rover
The Wanton Song
Going by your list. Not my top 5 Zep tracks though. #1 would be Achilles Last Stand.

Ha! That would've been sweet.
And I'm not the only one who lists Achilles at the top of their list. :metal
