Post by: KevShmev on November 30, 2017, 08:16:16 PM
You can vote for up to 5.

Having made this poll, it was extremely difficult to narrow it down, but I was able to:

Do It Again
School
Reminiscing
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Black Water

That's the idea.

Not voting for Sister Golden Hair and Baker Street hurt.

I'm a metal head but I much prefer these to the 90's rockers :lol

Doobies
Seger
Eagles
LRB
Rafferty

I probably know the couple that aren't ringing bells if I heard them.

This is my wheelhouse, here.    Five of the first six (not including Supertramp, though I love them, I just wouldn't pick "School") are literally in my top 15 songs of all time.   So there's that.   I can take any five songs on that list, even the Jackson Browne, who I consider Nirvana-level overrated.   I abhor Jackson Browne and for the life of me can't fathom why that womanizing, wife-beating half-talent is considered a rock legend.   But I like that particular song.  :)

When I was a kid, in southern Connecticut, there was an AM station - WICC 600 - out of Bridgeport that was news during the day (that's where we'd go to hear Tim Quinn read the school cancellations when it snowed!) and music at night.  I would listen to that with my little AM radio with single earpiece under my covers when I should be sleeping.  A couple years ago I made a playlist on my iPod called "WICC 600" and it has all those songs I used to listen to under my covers.  "Reminiscing" was a big one.  You could also add "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, and either "Sundown" or "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to that list as well.     God damn.   Good times.

The only one I voted for was Take It Easy, which isn't to say I'd go out of my way to listen to it.

I don't know half the songs on the list (at least not by name.

I'd pick several other Billy Joel songs over the one listed.

Band on the Run is ok, but I'm not a huge fan of McCartney as a solo artist (despite having been named for him).

If I had a do over, I'd probably also pick Yellow Brick Road.

And again, I HATE the Doors.

Not unlike Fates Warning or Rush, I'd like to explore the entire catalogues of a lot of classic bands like these. The Doors is a big one I've always wanted to explore. Only know their hits but they're one of the bands whose hits I don't really get annoyed by. Love their sound.

I voted for Billy Joel and The Doors. The rest I can do without.

I'll thrown down here and say The Doors debut is one of the top 5 debut rock albums ever. Maybe top 3. The next album Strange Days has a little drop off (how could it not?) but no significant sophomore slump. Their other 4 studio releases have their share of radio hits, but I think the overall quality drops off a lot. I've read people say they were busting with creativity when they met and shot their considerable load on the first two releases. Or maybe Jim's extra-curricular activities kept them from reaching a higher potential. Who knows. tl;dr Get their debut, if you like it get Strange Days, then a greatest hits release for the rest.

I cannot stand The Doors. The most overrated band in Classic Rock.

The most overrated band in Classic Rock.

Not by a long shot. But their legacy is enhanced a bit by their mystique, the "legend" of their frontman, and a feeling their star shone brightly and flickered out, instead of slowly fading over time (hi, Rolling Stones!)

I don't find any mystique with them. The singer was a dick and the music blows. That said, I still believe Ray Manzarek was pretty talented, and I would've loved to hear what he could do with a real band.

Come to think of it, what did any of them do after The Doors? Aside from cameos on Square fucking Pegs?

Who is more overrated?

If you didn't find any mystique with them, that's fair. A generation of kids did in the late 60s. And their place in the lore of classic rock is secure 50 years later.

They were all great musicians. Ray saying "Fuck it, we don't need a bass player, I'll handle it, while I am playing keys" still amazes me. The fact that none of them did anything post-Jim is irrelevant.

Overrated is too subjective a term, I could rattle of any number of bands I feel are overrated. I also don't think The Doors are in the elite stratosphere of music that others might. They were a great rock band that captured a mood in a peculiar period in our country's history. and their music endures today. Strange Days, indeed.

The Doors were definitely one of those "snapshot in time" bands. Their importance cannot be overstated.

I am a little dismayed to see so little love for Sister Golden Hair.  :(

Had to youtube that song, I didn't know that's what it was called.

No dismay here.

For me, America was perfect for listening while driving on long trips through the country. Ventura Highway in the sunshine!

Wings
Steely Dan
America (Though Sister Golden Hair is probably my least favorite of their popular songs... I'd much rather listen to Ventura Highway, Sandman, or Horse With No Name)
CSNY
Steve Miller

TAC and I will be over here, chatting, while you guys embarrass yourselves over the doors.   Bad poetry warbled in a bad Elvis impression over average hippy rock.    No thanks.

I'm kidding a little bit - it's not "bad" - but I do think it's overrated in the same way that Tom Petty is.  When it was fresh and real, it had a spark, but when the hype got too much, it overshadowed the work, in my opinion.

I won't debate this strongly. I was born in 76, so cannot speak to how The Doors were viewed in real time. By all accounts I've read, that spark was as bright as anyones at the time. And we cannot argue that the light doesn't still shine. There is a point where hype can overtake and overshadow a band's work. But I'd argue that happened with The Beatles, the Stones, Eagles, Petty, and countless others.

Anyway, is there a Doors thread for this?

Black Water
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant
Band on the Run
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Riders on the Storm

Could've easily included both Steve Miller and Eagles in there but those five are pretty solid.

With the exception of Black Water (worst Doobie Brothers song) I could have picked any combination of all the other songs. So many good songs here.
I went with:
Baker Street
School
Band on the Run
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Take It Easy

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Take It Easy
Night Moves
Baker Street
Blackwater

I cannot stand Band On The Run, I don't know what about the song rubs me the wrong but I really don't care for it.
