Title: HBO's The Deuce

Quote
The Deuce tells the story of the legalization and ensuing rise of the porn industry in New York beginning in the 1970s. Themes explored include the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts that coincided with the change. The show's title is derived from the nickname for 42nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue.

The pilot has been on HBO Now for a few weeks. I just watched it yesterday. A 90 minute pilot! I thought it was very good, though. Extremely well shot, interesting characters, great cast. Might have to watch it again though because it was so long. Has anyone else watched it? I'm looking forward to the whole season.

Been thinking about whether I want to check this one out. Maybe I should.

The reviews seem to be glowing, looks like it's getting high praise almost everywhere. I'd definitely recommend it, the pilot is movie length!

So I gave this one the old college try.  I just can't get into it.  There is not one character in it that I can get behind and root for.  They all seem like lowlifes.  The story line is dark and depressing.  It is kind of like the end of Boogie Nights after Little Bill blows his brains out.  It just seems to go downhill.

I don't know if I can support anything that Maggie Gyllenhaal is in, I hear she doesn't put her shopping cart back in the corral.  :tdwn

I like the show. It's not my favorite and the characters are kind of 'eh' but there's something about it that kept pulling me in every Sunday. The creators said they weren't trying to force a character to be a 'good' person, that these people are flawed every bit as the people watching the show and that's how they'll develop, as real people with (usually) a skewed moral compass, and also showing the dangers of 1970s New York in the business of prostitution and porn. Feels gritty.

Gritty is a great word for this show!

I hear what you're saying.  Maybe it is because sometimes I have to deal with sketchy people in my job, so on my off time I don't want anything to do with them!  LoL

Can't blame you for that, Harmony!
