We all know how Black Clouds and Silver Linings had, in its limited edition, not one but TWO bonus discs, one was the instrumental version of the album and one was six brand new covers. Let's say on the next album that will be the followup to The Astonishing we will get a bonus disc... what would you want on that?
Since this is all highly hypothetical anything goes for the replies of course. As for me, I'd love a Rudess / LaBrie combo. Just the other day I casually refreshed FB and Rudess was live playing an improv piece on his piano. I'd love for him to sit down with James and conjure up something only piano and voice. Have the bonus disc being a Rudess / LaBrie EP, with 2-3 original songs, a couple of covers and a couple of older DT songs reworked and rearranged just for piano and voice, kinda like the alternate version of Wither.
As a second choice, I remember the acoustic shows of the FII era, they never did something like that before or after again, it was unusual and interesting to have those kind of performances. I would love to hear some of that again, just like in my JR / JLB only scenario they could apply the "New songs + DT songs rearranged + covers" scenario to have 6-7 songs for a bonus EP.

That, or demos would be cool, if they record those these days.

Yup. This would definitely be my first choice.

My first preference would be a "Making of" special. My second would be four or five Majesty/WDADU songs re-recorded by the current lineup.

WDADU played by current lineup.
Hell yes!!
And the re-recording of 'the Killing Hand' should be based on the live WDADRU version..
-
WDADU played by current lineup.
I've always wanted that. To this day I haven't heard full WDADU because I can't stand Dominici's voice

As awesome as this would be, I believe the band gave up their rights to that album when they left Mechanic Records... so may not be possible:(

First thing I thought of as well. Whether it's just a few clips on YouTube or something more extensive like the bonus disk for SC, these are always great. A "special edition" is always an automatic buy for me if it has a making of DVD.

Just the original recordings, if memory serves. They are still their songs, they can do whatever they want going forward with them, as far as I know.
But this will never happen. Just get When Dream And Day Reunite. That's the closest you will get to it.

Either another 90 minute in studio DVD like Systematic Chaos
or the whole new album performed live in the studio.

Sounds good to me.
-
or the whole new album performed live in the studio.
Oh yea, some St. Anger stuff, right!? :metal
I'd love that. A DVD of the band in a studio just playing all the songs. That would be really cool, and something they haven't done previously.
-
I want a 4k DVD of Hef sitting outside listening and reacting to the album while enjoying a fine cigar and a never empty glass of scotch.

We'll talk later.
-
If their next album would have songs like Our New World and Chosen, I want a CD of instrumental versions so I can sing to the songs. :P
-
With the way the band does their live albums these days, I think I'd almost prefer an in studio performance.
-
A Making of DVD. I love the behind the scenes stuff.
This.
Yup. This would definitely be my first choice.
Definitely this. I know it's "been done" before but it was fascinating as hell. Sadly, I don't think they'll do something like this because they seem to much prefer writing and recording without cameras constantly around.
The other idea I had would be a type of unplugged performance in the studio or in a small sound stage. Have a competition or lottery where you could invite 300 fans or so.
Rerecording a few WDADU songs would be great, too, but won't ever happen I'm sure.
-
Give me b-sides. I'll gladly take stuff DT writes and records that is different than what's on the album.
-
I'd like to see a mix of B-sides and older songs that were completely rewritten/re-envisioned, along the lines of Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden and Surrounded '07. One or two could be acoustic, but I'd like to see how they could take some of the other older songs in different directions.
-
I'm all for demos/earlier versions of songs personally. I realise that since DT have pretty much written and recorded simultaneously for the last several albums there may not be any need for demos, but I'd find anything like studio outtakes, alternative arrangements of songs or little ideas that ended up not being used really interesting listening. I always find it interesting to learn where things originate from.
I'm sure they could find enough material from between ADToE to TA to fill at least a single disc. Maybe a couple of the tracks from ADToE with JP's drum samples he used, the spoken word intro to TA that was cut out, or the complete outro guitar solo from ANB without the fade-out?
-
A jewel case. Not that flimsy thing the BC&SL deluxe was in or a digipak. :P
In all seriousness though, I like bonus tracks to be b-sides and if not that, covers. Demos and live tracks never interest me.
-
Another cool idea would be what Epica has done their last two albums and have the bonus disc be acoustic versions of a few songs from the main album. Those songs have been some of Epica's best IMO. Shows great diversity. I think DT could do it too.

One or two, OK. But a CD just of acoustic versions of songs? Pass.

If it was just "normal" acoustic versions, I wouldn't necessarily be all that interested. But if it was indeed more along the lines of what Epica has done, JUST TAKE MY MONEY, DT!

Yea, I didn't express further as a straight up acoustic version isn't terribly interesting, but actual arrangement changes and instrumental changes as well, which JR could easily do. The idea of just making a fun spin off song in a musically interesting way, but as in something that doesn't actually fit on a DT record.
-
I notice what bands are doing now is - putting the making of on YouTube instead of on a bonus disc... Probably f--- loads cheaper too.
-

And a lot of times those making of videos end up as a bonus on the next DVD or something similar. I think that works, one to hype the release as these youtube videos typically come out before the release of the album, and two, a way for the fans to own it eventually. Similar to DT's drummer auditions.
While I do enjoy these types of videos, I wouldn't want that on a bonus disc because they are becoming so common that I'd rather something more unique if it was my choice.
-

This. I really miss the "Making of" videos, it's just a very cool thing to watch. The re-recorded/re-imagined versions of the Majesty demos would be a great option too, something like what Haken did with their Restoration EP :metal

A DVD of MM playing the whole album, from beginning to end. Yes, I'm serious.

MM playing the whole album, from beginning to end. Yes, I'm serious.
Like a drum DVD of it? The kind Portnoy did on occasion?
I'd like a the whole album with MM speaking the lyrics in his Boston accent.
-
Yeah, a DVD of him playing all that stuff, I think that would be wicked cool.
Alternatively, a mix of the new album where each tom hit is replaced by MM saying "tooooneee".
-
Individual stems for all the tracks of the main album.
This is my vote! Love listening to the isolated stems for each track.
Good thing about it is they don't need to manufacture a CD for it. They could release it on a thumb drive (which I think is cheaper?), like how they released the bonus footage of the MM drum audition in the DT12 box set. Or a link for digital download.
-
If they do full stems, I hope they don't group them again.
I wouldn't want drums as a single stereo track and so forth. Give me the stems they way they were recorded/mixed.
-

However unlikely, that would be awesome, especially for listening to the vocal harmonies as separate tracks.

I would love to see that :hefdaddy

Yeah that would be cool. Periphery did that with their last record. Called it a producer pack. I'm pretty sure it let you drill down to each stem individually, not grouped together.

There are 2 things that would guarantee my pre-order and to pay top dollar, neither of which will happen but why not dream
1) Modern studio version of WDaDU. I know they did WDaDRU but I would really love to have a studio version of this album
that sounds fresh and modern. The songs would come to life!
2) A full cover album of either A) VH debut ~ B)Iron Maiden Powerslave ~ C) Led Zeppelin IV....or each member picks 4 Zeppelin
songs they love and they do a Zep compilation cover album.
-
And a full Bohemian Rhapsody cover as the last song.. :hefdaddy

Nooooo. Not current DT lineup. WDaDU has a huge amount of energy and feeling of spontaneity. Current DT is all about being meticulously calculated and often comes off as pretty sterile. Also MM would change up all the stuff I loved from MPs playing to match his style.

But wasn't DT12 composed while recording the album?... If that's not spontaneity, Idk what is.. In fact, I remember it being criticized just for that..
Anyways, I'm not sure I'd want a new version of WDADU.. The album already exists.. I'd prefer something new, like.... yeah, this:
A bonus disc with a few improv jams like 'Take this to the Pain'..

Completely agree with you on all you said here, man.
-
Pretty sure no one complained or said that DT12 was too filled with energy and spontaneity.
-
A DVD of all the drummer auditions...totally unrelated to the next cd. But, I will always want that.

I know there was a lot of complaint about it.. And that the album was made that way, the band said it in several occasions..

Stems can just be a downloadable code.
Disk two, either a "making of" DVD or Metropolis Part 3 demos
-
Metropolis Part 3 demos
You mean they'd have to come up with the concept, write the songs, and put the eventual demos as a bonus for a, presumably, standard studio album?
-
A "making of" DVD with all band members involved would be great.
Also a CD with acoustic versions of DT songs, like one song from each album.
Going back to the original post, I'd love a JR/JLB piano/voice album, but I don't think it would be ideal for a DT bonus disc, a bonus disc should feature the whole band. If JR and JLB would ever do a piano/voice side project i'd be the first to buy it!
-
Here's an idea: bring in some outside musicians/producers/songwriters to sit in and co-create some songs for a bonus disc.

They should do that... for the main album :hefdaddy

Any one or multiple of the following would be good with me:
1. Individual instrument stems for every track, like they did with BCSL.
2. If they write in studio and still jam like they did in the past, recordings of the improv jams would be cool.
3. Studio versions of the extended live versions of songs such as Surrounded, LITS, To Live Forever, etc; and studio versions of their live instrumentals such as Barfbag, Awake Jam, the late 2014 Trial of Tears intro, the various other 1993 pieces... and a full band version of the Easter Egg!

Yeah, this would be cool too.. Only that I don't think they're revisiting the old stuff..
Also, regarding the Easter Egg, they already did a full band version of it: they called it "Surrender, Trust & Passion".. :o
-

Oh, yeah. Man, I want to see how Virgil Donati played the songs so much.

Metropolis Part 3 demos

Yes, this
-

What
The melody James sings throughout that section is the same that JP plays in the outro above the piano, and they're both even in the same key (D minor).. He varies it after, and the chords aren't the same, but the main melody is.. So I'd guess the section got inspired by ST&P, but it could've been the other way around.. Anyways, what's for sure is that one section inspired the other..
-
That is not in any way for sure.
-
That is not in any way for sure.
Yes, I'm a musician and I assure you it is.. That the melody is the exact same, can't be argued, and neither the fact that both section are in the same song.. It can't just be coincidence.. That's how a composition works most of the times: you get inspired by certain melody or riff or whatever in one song and then developt a following section to complete it..
-
:corn
-
Hmm...certainly the first phrase of that guitar part in the Easter Egg you can pretty much sing "To feel the joy in life" along with it. But it's a big stretch to fit the rest in after that.
-
Like many others, I would love a re-recording of WDADU with JLB on vocals but that would be a lot of work for a bonus disc and just re-treading old ground so it is very unlikely we will ever see this. Other than that would just like more songs.
-
A making-of DVD with a 5.1 mix of the album.
Alternatively: A CD of songs from the 30th anniversary mini-tour.

A "making of" documentary!
Really, I have watched the SC documentary more than I have listened to the album. :lol
-
Something like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woxbCUpws44
-
Definitely a making-of DVD. I'd like to see Dream Theater do something like what Metallica did with the "Black Album" and A Year and Half in the Life of Metallica, where they did a making of the record for Part One, and then Part Two covered the tour.
-
Video footage from TA tour would be cool.
-
Seems we agree we all want a bonus disc.
DT, can you hear us??
-
Seems we agree we all want a bonus disc.
DT, can you hear us??
Indeed!
-
What we don't agree is the content of the bonus disc  even though many would like a making of.
I've seen from the replies that I'm in the minority in wanting actual music. Be it additional stuff, demos, covers, different arrangements etc I'd like more actual music and maybe something a bit off the field, justified for a bonus disc that doesn't impact the style and tone of the album.
-
I'd like some extra tracks, like Epiclouder or the bonus Transcendence disc.
-
I vote for extra tracks, like they did with the 3 disc edition of BC&SL.

This exactly. They have done making of videos and covers so no thanks for those.
-
I'd like to see official, studio versions of Barfbag, Moonbubbles and Cry for Freedom.
-
Without a doubt, a "making of" thing like one from SC with as much footage as they can cram in. Hire a guy they feel really comfortable with and let him film a bunch of studio stuff. Even though SC is my least favorite DT album, it's still so fun to watch that "making of" doc.
I don't know how comfortable DT is with doing that kind of thing these days, but they seemed to enjoy it on the SC one. That kind of footage is so special and a blast to watch.
I also like the idea of some decently recorded audio from the TA or I&W tour. Maybe writing session/improv stuff...something like that jam session they first had with Mangini when he was auditioning.
-
And to add onto the making-of: I'd like to see the writing of the record, as well. Yeah, I'm greedy, I guess. It'd be cool to just see the evolution of the songs, kinda like what they did on the little making of Train of Thought, where they showed the thought-process of parts. As a viewer/fan/musician, I'd like to every step of the process, from writing, recording, mixing/mastering, then the tour. But, f course, you'd have to take into account that the guys might find that a little too invasive and after awhile would wanna be left the hell alone. I know I would. But on the flipside, I find stuff like that fascinating, which is why, like I said in my earlier post, why I like A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica so fun to watch.
-
I prefer a CD will mixed extra content; acoustic renditions, covers, live recordings, demo's, (studio) live recordings, instrumental versions, etc. A balance between them, with whatever suits a certain song the best (some songs will be great instrumentally, others will be great acoustic). A making off is nice but I prefer those bite sized at youtube/facebook.
-
A live version of The Astonishing.

I don't even care if it's mastered like shit. They could label it an official bootleg for all I care.

But then it wouldn't fit in one disc.

DT's next album has a bonus disc.. What'd you want?..

Maybe a track by track discussion by the band?

Maybe a track by track discussion by the band?
It would be nice to even have it in the booklet. Some bands do it, Edguy for example in their latest albums have two pages dedicated to each song discussing how it was created and the likes, it would be interesting for a change to have a short commentary from the band / the songwriter about it.
-
Hi there! It's been my first post, after wandering around for some time.
So, I think that it would be cool if they make music videos for all songs from their next album, just like Metallica did, and put it in bonus CD (or DVD maybe). Although some of their videos was crap, it's still very nice to see.

Yes they could do that, or have a sort of St. Anger style performance video.

The studio performance video would likely be cheaper and can be done with go-pro's. I don't think DT has Metallica's budget for full-blown concept videos for each song.
Great ideas though. I'd prefer videos or a live performance of the album in the studio to cover songs or instrumental versions.
