Title: Shaw/Blades - Hallucination (1995 singer/songwriter album)
Post by: KevShmev on March 07, 2017, 07:29:59 PM
Anyone else a big fan of this? I hadn't listened to this in a while, but flipped it on last night and was reminded of how good it is.  Catchy melodies all over the place, great 2-part harmonies, and just a really nice overall vibe.

Love their first album!  I think the last time I spun this cd was probably about half a year ago.

I went through a phase in high school where I was absolutely convinced the Damn Yankees was the most talented band on earth.  So it was natural that I checked out Shaw Blades.  I have a lot of Night Ranger, Jack Blades solo, etc, and listen to that every once in a while too.

Favorite songs from it:  Come to Be My Friend, Blue Continental, Down That Highway...  Although I don't think there's any "bad" songs by any means.  I'm not a big covers guy so I never checked out their "Influence" album.  I think by the time that came out I was more into prog and just not interested anyway.

I never did check out that Influence record they did, but I should.

Most of those Night Ranger hits from the 80s have aged really well, IMO.  And of course I have been a Styx fan for a long time.

For me, I was really wanting a 3rd Damn Yankees record, so Hallucination was like the next best thing.  Sometimes you get two singers who voices mesh perfectly together, and I think Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades are a fine example of that.   I probably like the first four songs, Down That Highway and I Can't Live Without You the most, but yeah, not a bad song on there.

As long as Shaw is on top.

For the billing....

I got it when it was released and liked it. A bit too hippy for me but it's ok. Not played it in years though.

I don't get a hippy vibe from it, but I never buy into that stereotypical thinking when it comes to supposed hippy music anyway. ;)

HUGE fan of Jack Blades.  I have this, "Influences", and both his solo albums.  All very good, if a little different.   I love how Jack and Tommy's voices blend.

And don't get me started on Night Ranger.   Excellent!!

Anything with jangly acoustic guitars is hippy shit to me 😀
Will dig this one out again as soon as I feel up to braving the attic.
And yeah, their voices blend so nicely. I'll take Damn Yankees though.

Lol Brent. For me it's all about the harmonies and how crafted the vocals are. It's an art to sing a line, nevermind harmonies that fit a song.

I love how Jack and Tommy's voices blend.

Well said.  The way their voices blend have a very Simon and Garfunkel feel to them, and that is a really good thing.

And don't get me started on Night Ranger.   Excellent!!

Sentimental Street is a really good forgotten 80s tune!

To me, Hallucination was a more laid back Damn Yankees album, without Nugent's ripping guitar licks of course.   Like I said earlier in the thread, I always wanted another DY album, so for me, Shaw and Blades doing that CD was the next best thing.

The funny thing is I was re-reading the thread and responded to your earlier post missing that I already responded.   Damn 49 is hitting me hard! :lol

NOT! More like Light Ranger.

What a tease that first album was. Guitarist plays for Ozzy, first single (Don't Tell Me You Love Me) is a ripper, and then the album absolutely blows.

I do like Blades' voice. But even Damn Yankees sucked. Not even Ted Nugent could make that project rock enough.

But even Damn Yankees sucked. Not even Ted Nugent could make that project rock enough.

Not that something has to ROCK to be great, but have you heard the whole second album or just the hits?  Don't Tread On Me, Dirty Dog, This Side of Hell, Uprising and Fifteen Minutes of Fame all rock pretty good.  :metal

You ought to.  The first album is good, but definitely sounds very bubblegum pop rock, especially in the sound and production.  The second has a lot more grit, power and balls.

The second one may get an upgrade from "blows" to "sucks" - I think that's how it works.

No, I get it, it's not Slayer, but those guys are a cut above the typical puff rock.    Jack is a world class writer, Brad can still play, and I'm sorry, I'm a sucker for the cheesy Kelly Keagy 80's-isms.   "Neverland" is an excellent record, and I love the song "Revelation" from "Seven".

Funny story, harking back to TAC and how much they supposedly don't rock...

We play at Pandora at work all day, so I threw the Damn Yankees station into the mix the other day (we do shuffle all day, so we get a little bit of everything, except rap or hip hop, which no one wants to hear).  Today, Don't Tread on Me came on at one point, and I remember thinking, "I hope this isn't too loud and rocking for some people."  No one objected, but the song really does rock enough to where I really did wonder if it was too much.

Apart from the voices I don't think this and damn Yankees are similar at all.

That might be a stretch to say, but after listening to all three albums a few times each in the last week plus, I will say that the two Damn Yankees albums aren't as extremely similar to the Shaw and Blades album as I had remembered them being.  While not the kind of rock he is known for playing, Ted Nugent, and his guitar, was a major force on both DY albums.  Shaw and Blades is more Simon and Garfunkel than Damn Yankees.
