Title: What are your fears?
Post by: Serah Farron on February 25, 2017, 08:05:02 PM
I grabbed this idea after Mr. Boom Shack A Lack's fear of heights thread and I thought it'd be nice to try to expand it.

I heard that more people were afraid of public speaking than death? Is that true?

Anyways, what are your fears?

Personally, I'm afraid of spiders. They are one of the most disgusting creatures ever to live on this planet. I remember this time I was cleaning my room and I found a dusty "Life Science" book with a picture of a spider in front of it. Well, when I opened it, a spider jumped right and I almost died right on the spot. I've never felt so scared in my entire life before. Not just spiders, but that goes for all creepy and gross bugs/insects.

Another one would be closed spaces and elevators. I've had an accident with an elevator when I was young before and the lights all shut off and it malfunctioned. I don't remember it well, but all I remember was that I was on the floor, shaking when the emergency crew finally pried the door open. I can never forget this nightmare.

Also lastly, it would be death. I've had no problem with public speaking and I'm not afraid of dying, but how I will die. I don't want to die a painful death...a peaceful death would be recommended.

Anyways, what are your fears?

As far as my fears, I have severe acrophobia, slight aquaphobia, and claustrophobia. Other than that, I'm good. I've also developed peniphobia which is the fear of big dicks being waved in my face.

I'm afraid of heights, but especially in open spaces. Roof top ledges, the observation areas near the tops of waterfalls, near the edge of a cliff, or the edge of a parking garage.

I'm also afraid of very deep, open water.

Also, someone coming into my home and harming my family. Some of you may remember several years ago we dealt with a stalker at our home. Soon after that experience I started to have nightmares about someone harming my family. We had a panic room put in, and I have several weapons, and a very advanced security system. I'm not ever worried about myself, but rather my wife and son. I'm pretty anal about home security now.

My greatest fear would to have a child with someone. Then for the relationship to go south, despite my best efforts to keep it together, and then for the judge to award my partner full custody instead of 50/50, despite me being a loving parent with a solid job and a clean and safe apartment. And then from there, my ex keeps my child from me. And then finally for my child to feel pain and sadness from this bullshit that two adults should've been able to figure out.

That's my greatest fear on this Earth.

Weirdly - my worst nightmares involve lifts ( elevators ) and roller coasters... .neither of which I am remotely scared of in reality.

I'm afraid of needles and I'm claustrophobic. My fear of needles used to be a bigger deal to the point that I couldn't even move for a good ten minutes after getting bloodwork done from being frozen in fear. Lately though, my claustrophobia has taken control as the more dominant fear.

Since I don't want to be accused of spamming this thread...

My wife and I had an issue a while back, where she was furious enough to say that if my behavior continued, she wouldn't hesitate to contact a lawyer. At that point, everything you said above came true, if only for an instant. Now it is my only real fear at this stage in my life.

I don't know if it's what I'm the most afraid of, but the fear that is triggered the most for me is my fear of ants. When I was little me and my friend decided to climb this tree, as kids do. Unfortunately for me this entire tree was home to some sort of ant who all came out at once and attacked me. My mom had to pick them off my body with tweezers because they had bitten into my skin and wouldn't let go. Now I can't stand to see ants. If I'm in a forest or something and see an ant hill nearby I freak out.

I'm also afraid of very deep, open water.

This is the result of one of my fears too, one which I can't really specify because it can manifest itself in various ways. The most common way is that I'm really really afraid of large waves, something I used to have frequent nightmares about until I learned how to control those dreams. I think it can be just a fear of massive things coming towards me, but waves is what freaks me out the most. But the open deep ocean can do that for me too, although it's not specific to the water. If I'm in a normal dark room, I'd be fine, but if I new that the room was also huge and I couldn't see that, that would also make me uncomfortable.

I have nothing like "spiders" and "ants", though I have a healthy respect for them (and snakes).

I do have a fear of being hit in the mouth; I lost four baby teeth as a kid, and that never left me.   I've played hickey with a broken foot, I've played several sports with broken fingers/arms, but if I fear I'm going to be hit in the mouth, I'm a little coward.

I have a fear of being severely cut, and a fear of losing a limb (not entirely the same thing, but related).  I cut my finger on a mandoline a couple months ago and haven't been able to watch one being used on the Food Network since.

It's not a fear, per se, but while I love my mom dearly, I've already told my wife that when my dad passes, all bets are off.   I don't know how I'm going to respond but I'm going to need her like no other time.  (And no, I don't mean hookers and blow or anything like that, I just mean it's going to hit me very hard).

Getting Alzheimer's or anything remotely similar to Lou Gehrig's disease

These two things are frightening. I don't have a fear of any of the 'gross' animals that seem to bother most folks because I've probably captured and handled just about every kind and type. But Alzheimer's is utterly terrifying to me...the thought of losing my memories makes me seriously contemplate assisted suicide if I ever found out that was my fate. I wouldn't put my family through the long drawn out death like that...the emotional turmoil....it's just as brutal on them as I assume losing your mind is to the person. I can't imagine....

But these days....most of the things that truly terrify me when I allow myself to be swept away by a wandering mind and imagination are things associated with my kids. Them being kidnapped, developing a terminal disease....things of that nature. As a parent I find any 'worry' I have in my life has little to do with work or bills or anything like that....any anxiety I have is related directly to my kids somehow and if how I'm parenting and providing for them is sufficient enough to give them the foundation they need to succeed and survive in the world.

Lightning!  I've had a few close encounters with lt, while camping, while driving, several times at home. My house got struck 3 years ago while we were there ( the most humbling freaky random thing ever), why us?
I used to really enjoy watching lightning but now whenever it is coming our way, My body fills with adrenaline and I'm a bit of a nervous wreck!  It seems like it's after me, and I live in an area where T-storms aren't that common. I've had more close encounters than any of my friends or family, what's gives?? :omg:

I have a fear that I fear will come to fruition one day which is that I have absolutely terrible diarrhea while on a long flight which causes a long line on the aircraft waiting to use the bathroom and when I leave everyone on the plane knows I just shat out a dead animal.

I also really don't like blood and get a bit disgusted and sick to my stomach when I see guts.  I am very much afraid of being put in a situation where someone's body is like torn in half and I am the only one there to help them.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear, there is nothing more devastating. I can relate with how you must feel, my wife of 20 years passed a year and a half ago. Nothing else in life seems to matter. I couldn't even pick up my guitar and play it for at least a year. Hang in there, only time makes it get a little easier to live with.

I'm also sorry for your loss.  It's amazing how the loss of someone so close can change your perspective.  Nothing looks or feels the same anymore and I'm not afraid of dying.  It does slightly get easier with time.  Thanks for the reply.  I appreciate it.

Wouldn't you prefer nothing - instead of infinite torture. I don't think such a place exists though. I don't see how - if there is a God - how he could allow anyone to go there.

My bro thinks if you are not "saved" after death - then you cease to exist. Full Stop. Which is preferable to an eternity of absolute misery.

I think such a place was invented by catholics to strike absolute terror into their congregation. A means of control and power.

Besides - it would be like going to sleep. You aren't aware of being asleep. You wouldn't be aware of not existing. Definitely preferable to me...

Of course it's preferable given those two options. But the idea of hell isn't a scary thought to me since I don't believe in it. That leaves me with eternal nothing, which is a difficult concept to wrap ones mind around. I wouldn't say I fear it, but it is a slightly uncomfortable idea.

I have no doubt that heaven and hell are real.  What scares me is that I can choose the latter and give up the assurance of the former.  If I could somehow persuade myself of the possibility of mere nonexistence after death, I don't know that I would find it scary as much as just depressing.

I don't believe in concepts.  I believe when can be proven.  If you want to have the debate where one side predictably plugs their ears and refuses to acknowledge the evidence because it doesn't fit into their preconceived notions, that can be taken to P/R, where it has been done to death already.  But that isn't the place of this thread, so please stop with the derailment and veiled insults.  That isn't what this thread is for.

The 'idea' and 'popular' presentation of Hell is absolutely made up and inaccurate. It's largely based off of Dante's Inferno and has been glamorized and pitched as this 'burn in hell' type of thing....when in all actuality as explained in the Gospels Hell is 'simply' spending eternity outside of God's presence. That's it. Me being a Christian...that's scary enough in itself....but....you can get real P/R'y once we start heading down that road and as Bosk says, it's been done to death in P/R....but this idea of fire and brimstone and a pitchforked devil is contrived.

Yeah. Last word from me on the subject - but I really don't think that if there is a God ( and I do think there is - the Universe is too awesome to be an accident ** ) -

I don't think he'd allow any souls to end up there for eternity.

The idea of just ceasing to be is much preferable.

** I sat up in bed one time with a terrifying thought - that if The Big Bang Theory is correct - then that essentially means that absolutely every single thing in existence -

the universe, all the planets, humans etc. Absolutely everything that has ever existed - is a massive accident.

I think that's too scary a thought to be the truth.

Dying with regrets.  Or, possibly related, a German word I learned a few years ago: torschlusspanik.  Literally fear of closing doors, or something like that, with regard to moving through life as opportunities become closed to you.

Why would the big bang specifically contradict purpose?
Title: Re: What are your fears?
Post by: Chino on March 02, 2017, 12:15:34 PM
Why would the big bang specifically contradict purpose?

It doesn't. You can just say The Big Bang was the first necessary step in a very complex process that's required for a purpose. You could argue that in order to have "purpose" in the first place, you need to first have something. You can't do great things (have a purpose) as a people without a modern society. You can't build a modern society without buildings. You can't have buildings without strong materials. You can't have strong materials until you know how to combine elements. You can't have elements without atoms. You can't have atoms without protons, electrons, and neutrons. You can't have protons, electrons, or neutrons without space time. You can't have space time without the Big Bang. All you have to say is that the Big Bang was the required catalyst to lead to whatever purpose your heart desires to exist. I'm not saying I believe in a purpose or that the existence of matter means there is one, but it'd be easy to work into an argument.

Dying with regrets.

This is a good one.  After waisting 9 years of my life with someone who I ended up really disliking, I felt like I regretted those 9 years or more specifically the last 4 of which when things started to get miserable.  I told myself after that I would be doing everything I can to live a life with no regrets.

I don't fear hell fire because it doesn't make any sense. How could a loving God burn somebody for eternity for being bad for a short lifetime. There would be no justice there, being that God's attributes are Love, Justice, Wisdom, and Power.
I loving father would not put a child's hand on a burner for misbhaving. A loving God wouldn't dream of torturing somebody for eternity. The lake of fire in the Bible is symbolic meaning distruction. Anything burnt by fire completely ceases to exist. So enemies of God won't burn for eternity, they just won't have life anymore. In otherwords, cease to exist.
That doesn't mean that many bad people (that had a good heart deep down inside) who have all ready died won't have a second chance. The bible sais there's going to be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous. They will be able to start fresh under God's kingdom arrangement.
I could explain so much more about this but like Bosk said, it belongs in the P&R forum..

Chino responded to this, but I want to as well; I believe - very strongly - that there is a god of some sort.   To Architeuthis's point, though, we have to be very careful not to over-anthropomorphize him/her/it.   This is one of my beefs with Hitchens; he posits there is no God, then uses a bunch of human constructs, and human actions/activities to allegedly debunk it.  I believe "religion" is man-made, and subject to the flaws and imperfections of man, and therefore not proof at all of any omnipresent being.  The other common way to "debunk" god is to attack the assertions of the bible - also a man-made document.  I personally believe god set this universe in motion - ala a top or gyroscope - and much like a scientist, largely let's it "happen".   That doesn't mean there isn't purpose, that doesn't mean that the "scientist" can't tweak the experiment, but I also don't believe that "God" gives a crap whether that wide receiver catches that pass or that basketball player nails that shot at the buzzer.  He might, he might put things in motion to allow that person to do those things, but I don't think the hand of god guides that ball into the hoop.   I could be dead wrong - I know no more than anyone else - but I think we have to account for all those things that DON'T fit our belief system, as much as we have to account for those things that do.

TL;DR:  I don't think the existence of the Big Bang at all means there is no god, or that there is no "purpose".

I always use TV as a device to get away for the reality of life.  Escapism.

*snip*

I totally agree that Religion is bad and should only reflect on the people that follow it / abuse it / enforce it than the God it is supposedly based on.

If someone blows up a building and says God made them do it - then that person is probably a nutcase.

It's like when they find out a murderer listened to metal before a killing spree. It wouldn't even get mentioned if all they found in his record collection was Beethoven.

"Someone once told me the definition of hell: on your last day on earth, the person you are will meet the person you could have become."

The person you "are" is the person you have become.  Don't you mean the person you "were"?

Bees. Fucking bees, wasps, yellowjackets. Fuck them all. One gets within 20 feet of me and I turn into a whimpering little girl. And lord help us all if one ends up in my room.

Also, a drink. I am terrified of where a drink will take me after almost six years of sobriety, the end result would only be death, taking the love of family and friends with me.

I spent almost 6 years with someone who was in almost every way incompatible, and we were like a miserable old married couple within a year or two.  I don't view it as time wasted.  I learned a lot about what I want and don't want in a relationship from those 5+ years and the few single years afterward.  That knowledge has served me well, and may be the most valuable thing I've learned in life.  No regrets there.

STOP THAT!   :lol

I appreciate it very much!  We just got to be strong and move forward, unfortunately this cruel world doesn't give you time to grieve. The bills keep coming, the pressure is always on. Thank God for good friends and music, and my dog who is always by my side! 😎

Inspirational.  Thank you.   :tup

No but have you heard of the one where you are repulsed at the sight or the thought of lots of tiny holes in things ?

I have dreams of massive spiders with huge abdomens covered in tiny holes. Ewwww.

Don't be afraid. Be strong in your knowledge that you're beyond that. Be inspired that you'll never be that person again. I've never had an alcohol problem so I can't begin to understand completely. But I have been addicted to both cigarettes and sex. An addiction is an addiction and with it comes constant struggle. I still see people smoke and buy cigarettes and think, "Hmmm...just one smoke would maybe be okay." But anytime that happens, I have to remind myself, that's not me anymore.
I also struggle with the sex part even more so. I'm constantly in situations where it would be so easy to succumb to flirtation and direct come ons from women, or especially in situations where I'm triggered to seduce someone. That part was the most powerful where I couldn't ever resist. Like the prey drive in a dog or a big cat when something small goes running by. All logic, all reason was gone. But as soon as that happens now, I always laugh and remind myself that I'm not afraid of giving in. I'm stronger than that now. But it's a constant struggle. I won't let myself be afraid of what might happen. Maybe I'm afraid of being afraid. But I'm always in a better place because I can't ever let myself give in. Six years is amazing. God bless you for your daily victory brother. Be proud. Keep the Faith.

I'd say for biggest fear is my wife dying before me. I can't be left behind. I love her too much. I'd die tomorrow if that's what it took for me to go first. I truly mean it.
And my daughter going before me is unthinkable. If that happened, shoot me.

I definitely empathize with that. If I ever lost my daughter someone might as well just shoot me because the downward spiral that would result of that loss would do more damage than I care to think about.

Some fears are more obvious....(death of loved ones is an example).

I have a fear of being ignored.   As in, I'd rather literally be alone in the world than be with someone who was totally ignoring me.    Maybe I'm just an attention whore.   :loser:

Hey Prog... so, Peniphobia, the fear of big dicks being waved in your face.  Why only big dicks?  Are small dicks OK?  :lol

Cram...  I have one similiar to your plane fear.  Since my digestive system was seriously re-worked during my cancer surgery things now move a long at a very fast pace.  From the time I know I have to go, it could be as little as 3 minutes until disaster.  The scenario I worry about most...is when I'm scuba diving.  I would have to take of all my gear while underwater..tank, vest, and get my wetsuit down.  After that..while still holding on to everything (still need that air source...LOL) I would have to perform what is referred to as "The Warhammer Manuever" If your curious..it's on youtube, or at least it was...LOL.

My BIGGEST fear is being buried alive.  Living in earthquake country I fear the house collapsing on me during an earthquake and being stuck for days slowly dying.  If Hell is a real place... being buried alive would probably be the worst punishment for me...

The one upside is that you'd suffocate after less than an hour due to lack of oxygen so it wouldn't be the WORST thing...

Plus add on top of that the panic... It'd probably be even faster than that as you'd be using oxygen like nobodies business.

It's not like you'd be buried under a ton of soil and awake for hours on end.

Well...in the earthquake scenario I'd be buried under rubble and could have O2.  Look at the handful of guys who were buried at the WTC.  Or during the 89' NoCal Earthquake on the bay bridge that pancaked.  That being said... IF I ever found myself buried... I hope the hell you're right!  :lol

So, I guess you guys are saying if you lost your loved ones, their memory and honor wouldn't be worth living for huh?  That's a shame.  I'm wondering what you would want them to do if the situation were reversed.
