---RULES---

- There will be seven rounds. For this roulette, I've decided to drop round themes entirely, which means that every round will be an open round. Send me whatever the heck you want, as long as it's within rules.
- Submitted songs cannot be 14 minutes or longer, unless the round specifically allows for something longer.
- A YouTube link is good for song submissions. Spotify works too, as well as any website that doesn't force me to sign up to listen to it.
- The submissions for each round will be ranked from best to worst, and the higher your song ranks, the more points you get. (First place is 10 points, second place is 9, and so on and so forth, down to 3 points for last place. In addition, each contestant will have their own song rankings, so you can easily tell which of your submissions I liked the best and which ones I liked the least (this has no impact on scores).
- No more than two songs per band can be submitted in this roulette. Check out the "Newly Banned" section below to see which ones become unavailable. I will also add bands to this list if I get a submission that I like enough.

---ROUND 1 RESULTS---

1st Place: Elite
Shining - Fisheye

Shining’s a band that’s been on my radar for a while now but I haven’t actually listened to that much of their stuff; I listened to One One One a while ago and don’t remember it doing all that much for me, so I haven’t checked them out since then. That said, avant-garde, demented-sounding metal that resembles the soundtrack to a nervous breakdown is right up my alley, so it’s not a big surprise that I thought this song was great. It’s insane enough without reaching the point of becoming annoying or pure noise; in fact, it’s actually quite catchy and has a nice groove. It’s a little on the repetitive side, as the majority of the song is a single riff that gets heavier and heavier as the song progresses, but the buildup is done well enough that it’s not really an issue. Nice job.

2nd Place: Parama
East Of The Wall - Naif / Linear Failure / My Favorite Society Guy

This is technically three different songs, but since they flow into each other seamlessly and feel more like three movements to a single piece, I’ll let it slide. And yeah, if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought it was a single song as well. The instrumentation and sound of this piece are very strong; all the instruments sound great and contribute to the song equally. I found the instrumental sections of the song to be the most enjoyable, especially the one right in the middle. The last couple minutes are great as well. The parts with vocals are a bit more uninteresting by comparison, but they aren’t bad or anything. The piece as a whole doesn’t have all that much structure, which makes a lot of parts hard to remember, but it’s always an enjoyable listen even if you don’t fully absorb everything. The only other complaint I have is that Naif is easily the weakest of the three sections (I checked the album out on Bandcamp so I know where each part begins and ends). As a whole though, I liked this piece a lot.

3rd Place: Scorpion
Wilderun - The Garden Of Fire

Black metal with a lot of folk influence has a tendency to do quite well in my roulettes, and hey, this track’s no exception. That said, it was definitely a grower. This style of black metal tends to work better for me when it plays down the heaviness and focuses more on the atmosphere, and this song feels like it’s balanced more towards the metal side of things. I found the heavier parts of the song to be a bit uninteresting, while the calmer, more melodic parts are great, especially when the band breaks out the strings and acoustic instruments. There’s one section in particular a little after five minutes in that’s absolutely beautiful. The song also gets a lot better in the second half when it starts bringing out more memorable melodies and hooks; the first half of the song feels more lacking in this department and I would have liked if the melodic moments were spread about the song more evenly. While I didn’t enjoy every part of this song, the parts that are good are really really good, and they are what kept me wanting to return to this song for repeated listens.

4th Place: Evermind
Dark Tranquility - The Grandest Accusation

This is a nice melodic death metal song with a solid flow and a good amount of energy. While the majority of the song is mid-tempo, it has a very grandiose vibe to it that gives it a lot of power, and the sections where the song shifts into double time really pump you up. There’s also a really beautiful clean section halfway through that builds back up into the heavier sound really well. There’s not much else I have to say about this track, other than that I thought the ending was a bit too abrupt, but that’s my only real complaint. Good song.

5th Place: splent
The Pineapple Thief - Shoot First

I really enjoyed the sound of this song. It’s very Porcupine Tree-ish which is always a plus for me, and the atmosphere is quite melancholy and beautiful, which I enjoy. The 7/8 groove is also quite nice, especially during the verse. That said, I have my issues with the songwriting. This song feels incredibly underdeveloped, as if there are parts of the song that are just missing. Most glaringly, there is only one real verse, and after the first chorus, it sounds like the song just skips to the C section, followed by the last chorus, and then the song’s over before you know it. I also wish the song had a proper prechorus or more buildup to the choruses, as they sort of feel like they come out of nowhere. While I thought that this song wasn’t as strong as it could have been, I really enjoyed its style, and I would love to hear more stuff like this in the future.

6th Place: Train of Naught
Xerath - I Hold Dominion

This song does a pretty good job at blending symphonic and metal elements to create a very bombastic and cinematic sound. It has some powerful moments, like the part where the full band enters and the riff that starts almost three minutes in. As a whole, however, the song kind of blends into a haze of generic symphonic metal, especially towards the end. While the sound itself is powerful, there aren’t really any strong melodies or hooks to support it, and as a result the song feels pretty underwhelming.

7th Place: LordCost
Mudvayne - Severed

Mudvayne? Well, I can’t continue without posting this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpKxtTPQ1Q8

Anyways, this song was good, but nothing great. It’s got some pretty cool bass work, though I’m not sure if it always fits in with the song or really adds much to it overall. All the other instruments and the vocals as just average; they do their job but they aren’t noteworthy in the slightest. The best part of the song for me was definitely during the middle when it gets super angry and heavy. Other than that, while this song doesn’t really have any problems, it doesn’t have anything that great either. It’s just pretty average. Have another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI7F6fxmUx4

8th Place: Tomislav95
Swallow The Sun - Hope

This was the only song I got this round that I thought was flat-out boring. It’s very slow and monotonous-sounding, despite it having a pretty wide range of dynamics. I think the problem I have with this song is that it tries to be both emotional and heavy with some strong and powerful melodies, and it falls just short with all three. The calm sections are okay, the heavy sections are okay, and the melodies are decent. This wouldn’t be a huge deal if the track was shorter or faster-paced, but with its length and slow tempo, it turns into a real slog. I did enjoy the section that starts around five minutes in though. Other than that, I found the song to be a very dull listen.

also i think the last part is the weakest, but only because the first two parts are so killer that it's a bit hard for a 2 minute instrumental to hold up to them, but all three are great anyways

Some days ago I was desperately searching for some bands to send for the Parama Roulette and I remember I liked Severed by Mudvayne, but I didn't know that the band was famous. Watching your yellow bands in the list I noticed many heavy bands and I tried with that one.

---ROUND 2 RESULTS---

1st place: Parama
Thy Catafalque - Szervetlen

I’ll admit, as soon as I read “electronic-infused black metal” I was hyped. Is this song as awesome as I expected? Well, it’s not perfect, but it’s still great. The highlight of this song is, unsurprisingly, its unique blend of black metal and electronic elements. I’ve never heard anything else quite like it, and it works really well. The synths and electronic instruments elevate the track to a whole other level; without them, I likely would have found the song to be pretty boring. The first half of the song is fantastic; it’s full of both awesome riffs and some really memorable synth melodies. The slower second half is unfortunately a bit weak, and I would have preferred it if more of the song were like the first half. Regardless, I really liked this song. I liked the down tuned, breakneck speed riffs, the atmospheric electronic flourishes, and the unique, experimental sound of the whole thing. Good choice.

2nd Place: Evermind
Blind Guardian - Wheel Of Time

It’s funny, I don’t consider myself to really be a fan of power metal, but whenever I get some in my roulettes, it always seems to do well. If there’s one thing this song succeeds at, it’s sounding absolutely huge when it wants to. It uses a full orchestra and soaring vocals to convey an incredibly epic vibe; the choruses in particular are amazing, especially the last one. That’s not to say the whole song is completely bombastic; there are a lot of sections that are quieter, and a lot of the song is infused with middle-eastern inspired melodies and instruments. While those influences are interesting, I would have been fine without them, and I preferred when the song focused more on the symphonic elements. While the quieter sections work well within the flow of the album and do a good job at contrasting the louder parts, they aren’t very interesting on their own. That said, the good parts of this song are really damn good. Maybe it’s time I check out some full power metal albums… maybe.

3rd Place: Scorpion
Witherscape - Marionette

This song was interesting. Musically, it’s a fairly basic power ballad with a melancholy vibe, clean verses, and some powerful choruses with distorted guitars and soaring string synths. However, the choruses feature some really heavy death metal growls that would sound out of place on paper, but work surprisingly well. The contrast between the verses and the choruses is great; when the choruses crash in and the song goes from being subdued and quiet to soaring and huge-sounding, the effect is very powerful. The song also comes across as being genuinely emotional, especially in the choruses and the fantastic guitar solo that closes the track. I don’t have any real complaints with this one.

4th Place: Elite
Obsidian Kingdom - Oncoming Dark / Through The Glass / Cinnamon Balls

Another round, another group of three tracks that seamlessly flow together. These tracks are a small portion of a giant song that encompasses an entire album, and I get the feeling that they would be a lot more impactful within the context of the entire piece than they do on their own. When looked at as a group of three tracks, it’s an enjoyable listen, but it doesn’t feel like there’s really a proper beginning or end. That said, all the sections flow together really well, and slowly increase in intensity from clean and peaceful to heavy and oppressive sounding. That seamless progression makes up for there not being too many sections that are super memorable, though Cinnamon Balls definitely has some great moments towards the end. This is a good slice of quality progressive metal, albeit one that leaves me wanting a bit more.

5th Place: LordCost
Faith No More - smilelobber

This is the first song I’ve ever heard from this band, and I thought it was pretty good. This is also the first time I’ve actually heard the widely-praised vocalist Mike Patton, and unsurprisingly, he’s a beast. His deranged, insane vocals contribute a lot to the unsettling vibe this song has, and the heavy choruses where he stops holding back on the screams are excellent. The verses are quite memorable as well, and the second one does a really fantastic job at slowly ramping up the intensity until finally losing control and transitioning into the chorus. Unfortunately, this song loses me a bit in the second half. The section with the slower tempo feels out of place and isn’t anywhere near as good as what came before, and I don’t like the organ outro at all. The first half is great though, and I found the song as a whole to be pleasantly demented.

6th Place: splent
Chimp Spanner - Cloud City

I got a track from this guy last roulette as well, and this one’s pretty much the shame shtick. I usually don’t go out of my way to listen to instrumental guitar-focused metal / rock, but I can find it enjoyable in small chunks. This song has a nice atmosphere to it, very dreamy and floaty. The soft synths and melodic guitar lines work well, and the more distorted, djent-y guitar work is passable. The song as a whole isn’t particularly noteworthy in my opinion, but it’s good.

7th Place: Tomislav95
Hypocrisy - Eraser

I don’t have much to say about this one, but it was a nice little melodic death metal track with no real issues but not too many noteworthy traits, either. It’s decently catchy and has some nice lead guitar work, especially the arpeggios in the choruses and the outro. If the song had a few more things worth praising it would have ranked higher, but as-is it didn’t have enough strengths to compete with most of the other submissions from this round.

Protest The Hero - Clarity

This is the third Protest The Hero song I’ve gotten in a roulette, and as with the other ones, my reaction to it was pretty much “this is good, but I still don’t have much of a desire to listen to these guys more”. This is also probably the weakest of the three that I’ve gotten, as it lacks the energy and fast pace that I liked about Without Prejudice and Sequoia Throne. I also didn’t find the vocal melodies or riffs to be that strong, though the main riff is decent enough. On the positive side of things, I enjoyed the finale with the choir, and I actually think the vocalist is great; I don’t really understand why a lot of people have an issue with him. This song was decent enough, though I’m starting to think that this band just isn’t for me.

---ROUND 3 RESULTS---

1st Place: Train of Naught
Novembre - Umana

This song is atmospheric, emotional, and pretty damn powerful. The things that really stand out to me are the fantastic instrumentation and sound. The layered, hazy and reverb-heavy guitars sound very shoegaze-influenced, and they do a great job at creating a wall of sound that is powerful, but not overwhelming. The song maintains its beautiful, melancholy vibe throughout its duration, but does a good job at transitioning between softer and louder parts. The last couple minutes of the song are especially fantastic, starting with a quiet buildup that explodes into a driving instrumental outro that ends the song on a very climactic and satisfying note. I really liked this song, and I don’t have any real problems with it. Good choice!

2nd Place: splent
Frost* - Dear Dead Days

I’ve gotten a couple other Frost* songs in my earlier roulettes, but I’m pretty confident in saying that I liked this one the most. Sound-wise it’s not too different from most progressive rock / metal, but its composition manages to strike an interesting and effective balance between accessibility and complexity. The structure is pretty simple, and there aren’t any self-indulgent extended instrumental sections or anything, but the song manages to cram in just enough short bursts of craziness here and there, like the sections with the super fast synth runs. The result is a song that’s catchy, energetic, and punchy without being too heavy, as well as intricate without being too complex. It’s an interesting combination of influences that works really well. If I had to nitpick, I’d say that the synth riff at the start is annoyingly abrasive, but other than that I thought this song was pretty great.

3rd Place: Evermind
Jon Lord - Pictured Within

This song is beautiful. The peaceful atmosphere, the simple but incredibly effective piano and string work, and the emotional delivery all come together incredibly well, and the section in the middle with the strings is especially beautiful. Not quite enough to bring tears to my eyes, but pretty damn close. Not much else to say about this one.

4th Place: Elite
Destrage - Are You Kidding Me? No.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, here’s a song that’s batshit insane. I’m certainly a fan of batshit insane, though it often comes with the cost of feeling too random and unmemorable without repeat listens, which I feel like the first three minutes of this song suffer from. That said, they’re still energetic as hell and enjoyable to listen to, and the song only gets better from there. The mariachi / polka section in the middle of the song is pretty brilliant and fits into the flow of the song surprisingly well, and the outro that keeps getting faster and faster is just awesome. This song reminds me a lot of Between The Buried And Me in that while some sections are a bit unmemorable, the parts that are memorable are fantastic and are more than enough to carry the rest of the song. Some issues aside, I liked this track a lot.

5th Place: Parama
Oceans Of Slumber - Winter

This is a pretty atmospheric and moody song that alternates between clean and heavy sections, and it was actually the clean parts that impressed me a lot more. The clean vocalist has a great voice, and her vocals mixed with the guitars create a very haunting, dark, yet peaceful atmosphere. The chorus is also very memorable and has a great vocal melody. The heavy sections aren’t bad, but they didn’t stand out to me that much. They feel a bit monotonous and like they take up more of the song than they should, even though I think it’s pretty much split 50/50 between clean and heavy. If the heavy parts of the song were a bit better it might have ranked a little higher, but as-is, this track was good, but not great.

6th Place: Scorpion
Thrice - Beggars

This is a pretty simple song with a good build-up, but I think it could have been executed a lot better. It’s very repetitive, with the only real variety coming from more instruments gradually being added and the vocals becoming more and more desperate until the song culminates in a very distorted and noisy outro. Structurally, I think this track is perfectly fine, but I found the melodies and composition to be a bit lacking. The vocal melody doesn’t stand out much, and the outro falls a bit flat for me while it should be super powerful. These things wouldn’t be as much of an issue if the song didn’t rely on them so much; since the finale isn’t too great it feels like the build-up is for nothing, and in the meantime there isn’t much to latch onto because the melodies aren’t strong enough to warrant the minimalistic and repetitive composition and instrumentation. I can definitely see why people would like this song, but it didn’t really do it for me.

7th Place: Tomislav95
Woods Of Ypres - I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery

This song feels like it’s relying very heavily on its raw emotion to carry it, so it’s a pretty big issue to me that I didn’t feel like that emotion was that genuine or expressed well at all. It could be the very unpoetic and amateurish lyrics, the monotonous vocal delivery, or some combination of the two, but I just didn’t find this song to be sad at all, despite it trying so hard to be. I also thought the song was way too long, mostly due to the first half of it being incredibly boring and repetitive. Thankfully, things pick up a lot from there. The slower section in the middle has some good instrumentation, and the guitar solo was pretty great, along with the energetic riffs and drums that accompany it. It’s just a shame that I found the depressing parts of the song to be so… completely un-depressing, as I would have liked this track a lot better if that wasn’t an issue.

8th Place: LordCost
Thumpermonkey - Sleeve

While I found the unsettling and creepy atmosphere of this track to be interesting, as a whole, it didn’t do much for me. Musically, while it’s moody, there isn’t much else to grab onto, and I found the riffs to be a bit lackluster. I also didn’t like the vocals at all. Overall, it feels like this song just wanders around without really building up to anything or going anywhere interesting, and its atmosphere was pretty much the only thing about it that I thought was at least decent.

---ROUND 4 RESULTS---

1st Place: Parama
Brand New - Limousine

This song ended up being my favorite of the round, despite being of a genre I don’t usually listen to. It’s very catchy, it’s got both quiet and loud parts, and it does a very good job at transitioning between the two. The main focus of the song is the long buildup towards the end, which despite being very repetitive, is done really well. It does a great job at gradually ramping up in intensity, especially in the vocal department, and I love how little background elements and melodies are slowly introduced until the song explodes into the guitar solo outro, which is a great payoff to the long buildup. With poor execution, the buildup could have easily ruined the song, but that’s thankfully not the case, and the result is a song that I really enjoyed.

2nd Place: Scorpion
Nevermore - The River Dragon Has Come

This is the third Nevermore song I’ve gotten in my roulettes, and I got pretty much what I expected from it: a solid metal track with some really awesome guitar work. If there’s one thing this band does well it’s really great down-tuned guitar riffs, and this song has plenty of that. The vocal melodies and delivery are pretty good as well. If I had one complaint, it’s that the song doesn’t really progress all that much; sections are re-used multiple times without any changes in delivery or execution, and the track feels a bit repetitive as a result. That didn’t hamper my enjoyment of it all that much though; this was still a really good song.

3rd Place: Tomislav95
Redemption - Black And White World

This one was definitely a grower for me. The first couple of listens didn’t register as much for me besides generic DT-esque prog metal, but I eventually came to really enjoy it. My one main issue with the track is that the first few minutes aren’t that interesting. The song takes a while to get going, but when it finally does, it’s really fantastic. The solo section towards the end is awesome, the fretless bass break that follows it is cool, and the outro is satisfying enough. The song also has a really good flow and sense of momentum throughout, which gives it a lot of energy. Overall, this was a pretty standard but well-executed piece of prog metal.

4th Place: splent
Rush - Losing It

I’ve yet to hear a Rush song that I absolutely loved (except for maaaaybe Marathon), but this song was nice, and a nice change of pace from the band’s usual sound. It’s very somber and emotional, quite beautiful, even. I usually don’t comment on the lyrics of songs, but I thought the ones here were very well-written. The vocal melodies are also very memorable and enjoyable. That said, there were some parts of the song that I didn’t like, notably the electric violin solo and the ending. The solo is very noisy and doesn’t fit in with the tone of the song at all, in my opinion. I also thought that the song fades out way too early. Those complaints aside, this was still a really nice listen.

5th Place: Train of Naught
Black Peaks - Set In Stone

My one sentence opinion of this song is that half of it is great and half of it is subpar. The choruses get pretty annoying after a while, and the verses aren’t that special either. Thankfully, the rest of the song is much better. The middle section has a really cool vibe to it, the guitar solo towards the end is awesome, and the song ends with a really badass-sounding post-metal riff. This track’s short and energetic enough to be decently enjoyable despite a lot of parts not being that good, at least in my opinion.

6th Place: Elite
Karnivool - Deadman

There’s parts of this song that I really like, but overall I think it’s way too long and drawn-out. It’s got some really groovy rhythms and the heavier parts of the song are really cool, but it really drags towards the end. The ambient section that starts around the middle of the track goes on for way too long; there’s a point where it sounds like it’s going to explode back into a heavy part, only for it to retreat back into a quiet break that begins the buildup over again, and I don’t think it works well at all. The finale of the song is also pretty underwhelming. This was an okay track, but I think it could have been executed a lot better.

7th Place: LordCost
Rishloo - Dark Charade

My opinions of this song are pretty damn similar to the above submission. It’s a long track with lots of cool moments scattered here and there, but it’s all spread pretty thin. For every memorable section, there’s also a lot of filler that doesn’t register as much. The track does have a pretty cool atmosphere, and each section flows to the next really well, but overall it’s just too unmemorable.

8th Place: Evermind
ReVamp - The Anatomy Of A Nervous Breakdown: Neurasthenia

This song was okay, but I didn’t really like its sound. I don’t know, the mix of power, symphonic and industrial metal just wasn’t that appealing to me. There also weren’t too many sections that stuck out to me as being that good, though the chorus was decently catchy. I also can’t complain about the vocals; Floor and Devin are both great at what they do, though their performances for this song weren’t amazing or anything. But yeah, I didn’t really dig this one too much.

Songs banned this round: Nevermore, Rush
I'm also going to ban a couple that I've gotten a bunch in my roulettes and I don't really want any more songs from:
Protest The Hero, Chimp Spanner

I've never seen anyone talking about Black Peaks here, I'm surprised someone sent them! I considered sending a song in this roulette from their debut album but I wasn't so sure Buddy would like it. Set In Stone is probably in the middle in my ranking of the album, Hang 'Em High, the closer and the two songs of their previous EP (Say You Will and Saviour) are my favourites

Set In Stone, Say You Will and Glass Built Castles are my favorite. Really good band actually, one of the better things I found this year.

Buddy, for next round, my band is not on youtube or spotify but they are on bandcamp. Can I just send you the bandcamp link? The download for their EP is free of charge so it shouldn't be a problem but I wanted to make sure.

I'm unfortunately going to have to delay results until Monday or Tuesday. I've been super busy with schoolwork and I'm going to be occupied this weekend. Was hoping to get this round done before then but that unfortunately didn't happen. Sorry this thing's taking so long.  :-[

---ROUND 5 RESULTS---

1st Place: Tomislav95
Baroness - Chlorine And Wine

I really liked this one. It’s got great instrumentation and a fantastic sound throughout, from the ambient, atmospheric intro to the anthemic finale. It also has some really great lead guitar lines and some great sludgy riffs. I also love how bombastic the finale is; really great stuff. I’ve heard about this band a lot and I’d definitely like to hear more from them, so I’ll probably be checking out this album at some point.

2nd Place: Evermind
iamthemorning - Lighthouse

This song is just so incredibly soothing and beautiful. It’s very minimalistic, but the piano and vocals convey enough emotion and beauty to create a really vivid atmosphere and mood that completely envelops you. The last part of the song adds in some more instruments and vocals and ends the song on a slightly more active note while still remaining within the song’s atmosphere. Really really pretty; I always enjoyed listening to this one.

3rd Place: Train of Naught
The Nautilus - Accupuncher

On the opposite end of the spectrum, here’s an incredibly heavy song that’s done really well. The drums and rhythm guitars are absolutely pummeling, but they’ve got enough rhythm and variety to them that they never become too overwhelming. The track is full of awesome riffs, and there’s enough variety to spice things up a bit, most notably the more melodic section in the middle, which is really cool. Hopefully these guys will have more than just an EP in the future.

4th Place: Scorpion
Fates Warning - The Light And Shade Of Things

This song wasn’t amazing or anything, but it’s still a very powerful and well-executed piece of progressive metal. It has a great flow and covers a good amount of ground without being too complex; the beginning and end are very quiet, while the middle section is a string of powerful verses, choruses, and a few instrumental bits. I personally think that the first section goes on for a bit too long, but that’s just me. The song really ramps up in emotion and power towards the end and the climax is really satisfying, though with repeat listens I started to feel like the song as a whole is maybe a bit too repetitive. Nevertheless, this song was pretty great.

5th Place: Parama
The Hirsch Effekt - Cotard

I liked this song a lot, though I definitely prefer some parts of it over others. The choruses are really memorable and impactful, the finale is really well done, and it’s all strung together very well. The heavier, crazier sections didn’t do a whole lot for me, but they weren’t bad or anything. I also found the vocal melodies as a whole to be pretty weak. Those issues aside, I liked it.

6th Place: Elite
Extol - Open The Gates

I found this song to be pretty average overall. It’s got some decent riffs, and composition-wise there’s some interesting choices in terms of instrumentation; the way the song mixes distorted and clean guitar is pretty unique. On the other hand, I found the clean vocal melodies to be incredibly weak, and the song doesn’t really have any one element that impressed me that much. Again, not a bad song, but not very good either.

7th Place: splent
Angra - Angels And Demons

Simply put, I just don’t really like the sound / style of this one. It’s very power metal-y, but it doesn’t have the bombast, energy or over-exaggeration that I like about that genre. It’s pretty thin-sounding, I didn’t find the vocal melodies to be that powerful, and I wasn’t that impressed by the riffs either, though the one in the middle is pretty great. Other than that one section, I didn’t find much to like here.

8th Place: LordCost
The Ocean - The Origin Of Species / The Origin Of God

Okay, so this band created Pelagial, one of my favorite albums of all time and, in my opinion, perhaps THE best concept album ever made. So naturally, I was interested in hearing more from them. A while ago I do remember checking out the album this song came from, and I wasn’t impressed. Listening to this again, I remember why. This song is boooooring. It has so little energy to it; the song just chugs along at a very unappealing mid-tempo for its entire duration, and while there are a few cool sections, like the saxophone outro, most of it is incredibly uninteresting. The heavier parts with the harsh vocals sound way too weak, the clean vocals don’t have any energy either, and as a whole the song just sounds really uninspired and lifeless. I don’t know if Pelagial was a fluke or not, but I certainly don’t have any desire to listen to this one again.

Artists banned this round: Baroness, iamthemorning

finally, someone appreciates chlorine & wine.

also I have no clue why you'd send something off heliocentric of all things, lordcost  :lol
@buddy that one is generally considered one of their weaker albums, but anthropocentric and (the second disc of) precambrian are both pretty cool, though not as good as pelagial imo. check out like, rhyacian or stenian or anthropocentric or heaven tv or something i dunno  :lol

My ranking of The Ocean albums I know is:

Pelagial
Heliocentric
Anthropocentric

I didn't even know Heliocentric was considered a weaker album..
I listen to only a few metal bands with growls, I much prefer the hardcore harsh vocals as the ones of The Dillinger Escape Plan just to make an example. Maybe that's why I don't like Anthropocentric apart the opener and two/three other songs (the one after the opener, Roots And Locust are two songs I vaguely remember), and why I'm continuing to finish in the last place every round  :lol. Pelagial instead is really good, I love songs like Cognitive Dissonance even if it's not something I usually like.

---ROUND 6 RESULTS---

1st Place: Elite
In Mourning - The Smoke

This song’s a bit generic as far as melodic death / doom metal is concerned, but it’s still very well done, and ended up just barely being my favorite of the round. It’s got lots of great sections; the heavier parts have some great riffs, the fast, energetic part that comes in around two thirds into the song is really cool, and the calm section in the middle is very moody and beautiful. The choruses are also pretty well-done and memorable. My one complaint about the song is that it’s a bit too long. In particular, there’s a point right after the chorus that the song would have ended perfectly on, but then it transitions into one last verse that’s completely unnecessary. That’s not really a big deal though; as a whole, this track was pretty great.

2nd Place: Tomislav95
Dredg - Lechium

This was another song from this round that I really liked. It’s got a raw, heavy sound that I definitely found appealing, and the louder sections are contrasted well with some clean verses and breaks here and there that also sound quite good. The song also has a superb flow; the extended build up at the start is done really well, and that moment where the distorted guitars kick in is pretty damn badass. I also really like how the song speeds up towards the end and things get especially heavy. I found the vocals to get a little bit annoying after a while, but that didn’t stop this song from being great.

3rd Place: Scorpion
Enslaved - Death In The Eyes Of Dawn

This song strikes a really good balance between heavy and melodic, and the result is a really powerful and evocative sound. The parts with the clean vocals are great; he’s got a really nice voice and the vocal melodies are quite memorable. On the other hand, I didn’t really like the harsh vocals, and they also don’t fit with the music that well a lot of the time, at least in my opinion. In addition, I found the song to be too long. It starts to get a bit monotonous towards the end, and the song as a whole is pretty same-y throughout, though it’s still a good piece. I might check this band out more in the future, as they’ve got some elements that resonate quite well with me.

4th Place: Parama
Oak Pantheon - Climb

And here we have yet another submission that I thought was too long. It’s got some good moments here and there, but they’re spread pretty thin throughout the song, and there weren’t any parts that struck me as being spectacular. It also takes like four minutes for the song to get good, which is a pretty long time. The middle section of the song is the part that stood out to me as being the most constantly good, and I also enjoyed the fast, thrashy riffs that come in towards the very end. So yeah, I found this track to be pretty average overall, and if the submissions this round were stronger, this likely wouldn’t have ranked as high as it did.

5th Place: Train of Naught
Slice The Cake - The Exile Part I - The Razor’s Edge

There’s not really anything wrong with this track, but I think it was a pretty poor choice for a roulette submission, as it’s hardly even a full song. The first half of it is just spoken word over some acoustic guitar, and yeah… it’s just spoken word. Not very exciting. The full band kicks in with a pretty huge sounding riff afterwards, followed by some powerful operatic vocals. This part is great, but then it just cuts off mid-word as the track ends and the next one on the album begins… or it least it would, if the submission included it. It probably would have been a smarter choice to send me both parts of the song as one submission, as other people have done in the past, or to just send me something else that’s a complete piece. As-is, it felt like I only got a fraction of a submission, and that’s not going to get you a high ranking, my friend.

6th Place: LordCost
Mr. Bungle - Merry Go Bye Bye

Alright, well, this one I obviously have some mixed feelings about. I’ve heard about this band in the past and I knew that they were pretty weird, and yeah, this song was definitely weird. Now, I love me some weird music, but this song, if you can even call it that, just seems like it’s trying way too hard to be crazy and bizarre. At least one third of it is literally just noise, and it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that that didn’t do anything for me. The track blends a ton of different styles, which I’m always a fan of, but it would be a bit more impressive if the song had any cohesion whatsoever. Instead, it’s just a handful of musical fragments stitched together by random, abrasive noise. And hey, the sections with actual music are actually pretty good. I liked both the heavy parts and the bluesy rock ’n’ roll parts, and the chorus that gets reprised at the very end is actually quite nice, I thought. If this song had more actual song in it, it likely would have ranked at least a bit higher.

7th Place: Evermind
Mark Knopfler ft. Ruth Moody - Wherever I Go

I can see your reasoning for sending this song, as your other mellow submissions ended up doing quite well. Unfortunately though, in this case, the third time wasn’t the charm. What really invests me in calm, quiet music is atmosphere, and this song just didn’t have enough of that for me. It’s definitely got some emotion to it, but that honestly felt a bit weaker than it should have been as well. While I thought that the saxophone and guitar solos were really nice, as a whole, I just didn’t feel like there was enough beauty in this song to justify the calmness and minimalism.

8th Place: splent
Enchant - The Great Divide

I didn’t really like this one at all. It’s too long, it’s boring, and after a while it started to get kind of annoying. Sound-wise, it’s pretty typical progressive rock, but I thought it was way too restrained. Almost the entire song is very calm, and there are hardly any flashy or energetic parts to speak of, which for this style of music is kind of important. It also doesn’t feel like the song is building towards anything; it’s nine minutes long and so much of that is spent just re-using the same sections and melodies over and over again, and it gets pretty grating. The high-pitched harmonized vocals with the weird effect over them don’t help, either. Can’t say I have any desire to listen to this one again.

No artists banned this round.

TIME FOR THE FINAL ROUND!

Alright guys, only one round left to go! This is your last change to send me something awesome and amazing and all of that good stuff. The only special rule this round is that this round is worth more points than the others. Here's the breakdown for how many points each rank will receive:

1st place: 16 points
2nd place: 14.4 points
3rd place: 12.8 points
4th place: 11.2 points
5th place: 9.6 points
6th place: 7.9 points
7th place: 6.3 points
8th place: 4.7 points

Why the weird fractions of a point, you may ask? So that there can be no people tied in the final results, that's all. Anyways, with the extra points, if you're a bit behind, this could be your chance to win! Assuming Parama screws up, of course. :P
Good luck!

If I knew I could send The Exile II along with it I would've done that obviously :P but I couldn't care less to be honest, to me it's not about the scores, but more about sharing the music. If you're interested in the music check out the album, if not, do not. The rest of the album is much heavier but if you're not into the spoken words it's a no go, to me they're by far the best thing about the record and there's a lot of them.

Will send final song in a bit.

Oh wow, I can actually still win this. Especially since there's double scoring.

Alright, I won't keep you guys waiting any longer. At long last, it's time for the FINAL RESULTS!

Sorry this roulette has dragged on for so long; my life recently has been busier than it has ever been before, and between all of my responsibilities, it was difficult for me to find the energy to give this roulette the time and attention it should have gotten.

But enough of that, let's get onto the results for the final round. Remember, the points awarded for each ranking are higher than usual, and may come with a fraction of a point to prevent there from being any ties in the final ranking!

Here we go!

---FINAL ROUND RESULTS---

1st Place: Elite
Anciients - Ibex Eye

This song has a pretty awesome blend of metal styles that sounds great and strikes a really good balance between heavy and melodic. It’s got great riffs, some enjoyable vocals (both clean and harsh), and the song does a great job with transitioning from one awesome section to the next without losing any momentum. My one complaint is that the finale is a bit weak; there’s a huge buildup to it and the payoff is a bit underwhelming, especially since it just fades out without an actual ending. Other than that, this song was excellent.

2nd Place: Parama
Thank You Scientist - Caverns

I got two songs from this band this round, and I must say, I’m really digging their sound. It’s a really cool fusion of prog and jazz that’s pulled off in a way that I’ve never quite heard before, and the use of horns is really fantastic. It’s not easy to fit them in with the regular line-up of rock instruments and still have them be just as prominent, but they somehow managed to pull it off, and they really add a lot to the song. The main riff is really awesome, the chorus is powerful and the song as a whole has a great amount of energy. It has a decent amount of variety too, throwing in some calmer verses and a more metal-oriented section about two thirds in. Great stuff.

3rd Place: splent
Thank You Scientist - Mr. Invisible

Aaaand here’s the very next track from the same album as the above submission. :lol My first impression of this song was actually a bit better than Caverns; I really liked how funky and groovy it was in comparison. Like Caverns, it also has some great melodies and a really powerful chorus. With repeated listens, however, I found myself gravitating a bit more towards the previous song. This one is a bit more simple and doesn’t have as much variety, so it started to get a little bit state after a while, especially because it’s a bit longer than it needs to be, in my opinion. It’s still a great track though, and I can definitely see why some people would prefer this one. Between these two songs, I’ve definitely heard enough to make me want to check these guys out more in the future.

4th Place: Scorpion
Indukti - Sansara

Instrumentals usually don’t win me over as easily as other songs, but this one was definitely interesting enough for that not to be an issue. It’s got some unusual instrumentation that grabs your attention, and it all comes together very well to create a very intense sound that I really enjoyed. Things mellow out towards the end as the song transitions into a very mellow and soothing extended outro that ends the song on a really nice note. A great example on how to do instrumentals well.

5th Place: Train of Naught
Harakiri For The Sky - Viaticum

This one was definitely a grower, and even with repeated listens, I can say that this song’s biggest problem is that it’s not very memorable. There aren’t too many moments that stick out, and if you’re not paying attention, the song as a whole kind of blends together. I’m also not really a fan of the vocals. That aside, this song has some great guitar work that creates a pretty strong atmosphere, and the song keeps getting better the further along it gets. The last few minutes in particular are really fantastic, and it’s largely thanks to them that I ended up generally liking this song in the end.

6th Place: Evermind
Arstidir - Sidasta Kvedjan

This song is pretty, but there’s not really much else to say about it. It’s incredibly quiet and soothing, and it’s got some nice string work. That said, I think it’s a bit too laid-back; some light drums or some more variety composition-wise would have definitely taken this song to the next level. I’m all for mellow, minimalistic music if the atmosphere is strong enough, but this song didn’t quite reach that point for me, in my opinion.

7th Place: LordCost
Cardiacs - Fiery Gun Hand

This song is very wacky-sounding, perhaps a bit too much so for my taste. I can definitely appreciate songs that are both experimental and accessible, and yes, this song is very experimental while still being quite catchy. I like that, but the sound just isn’t something that resonates with my tastes too well.

8th Place: Tomislav95
Paradise Lost - An Eternity Of Lies

Including this, I’ve gotten three songs from this band in my roulettes, and this one was probably the weakest, unfortunately. It’s not as catchy as The Enemy, and it doesn’t have the power or epic-sounding atmosphere that The Glorious End has. Even without comparing this song to those two, it didn’t do all that much for me. The melodies and riffs are memorable, but that doesn’t mean they’re particularly good. The song also relies on them pretty heavily and repeats them a lot without really changing them, and the track is pretty monotonous as a result. I definitely enjoy some doom metal, but I guess you just weren’t that lucky with that subgenre this roulette. :lol

Okay, and with that, let's see how you all did!
