Title: Swimming with Crocs- Animals...WTF??
Post by: TAC on June 03, 2016, 03:53:26 PM
Ok so I just read this article:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/crocodile-snatches-woman-night-swimmer/ar-BBtCRGf

Now every few weeks I read an article like this. I am fascinated with crocodiles and alligators. Flicking the channels on TV, I will always stop if they are showing them.

Anyway, my question is; How fucking stupid can you be to go swimming where there are crocodiles?

This was all over the news and I live in the same state although this is in the far northern part of the state.

I had to chuckle as it was reported that there was signage about it being croc infested waters.  Don't know what the fuck they were thinking and the general thinking from authorities is that is was just plain dumb on her part.

I laugh how they are reporting that they are searching for the women........yeah I don't think there's anything left.   Just shit for the women who saw it and her family, their stupidity has ruined a lot of lives.

It's Australia too ffs, we have crocs, anyone that lives here knows that haha.

Yeah, it is really stupid, but just some people just like living on the edge and doing daring things with no fear.  Of course, there is often a fine line between daring and stupid. :lol

But in all seriousness, sometimes the line is a bit blurry.  Swimming somewhere where you might occasionally see a croc, but they usually keep to themselves on those rare occasions, is different than swimming in croc-infested waters.  People do the same thing where there can be sharks, etc.

I am fascinated with crocodiles and alligators.

I am as well. I've been on more than a dozen airboat rides, and about 5 or 6 trolling boat trips on various rivers and swamps in the south to see them. And spent two days in Australia on a croc safari. They totally fascinate me.

Years ago I nearly dove into a canal full of alligators in Florida because I mistook them in the light of the evenings dusk for a pod of manatees that I decided I wanted to swim with. Yeah...pretty fucking stupid. One of the many times I've cheated death.

came in here to post that one. Man, that is such a beast!!!  :metal   I'm a lifelong reptile lover and have kept hundreds of snakes, turtles, lizards as pets.....Crocodiles and Alligators are so fascinating.

A few weeks back a buddy of mine posted a pic to FB of a small gator head next to the bank of a river.....the Mississippi River here in St. Louis! He was out fishing and looked over and saw it.  :omg: Judging from the head (only thing visible) looked to be a three or four foot long one. Clearly someone had dumped it.

That gator on the golf course was ridiculous! I saw that last week.

Temp, that's awesome about the Croc Safari. I'd love to go to Australia, but that plane ride. Yikes! But that's a while other thread!

Everytime we go to Disney we always try and spot one. In April, We saw a huge one right outside the south entrance hanging by one of those ponds near the road.

Yup, that's what I always tell my kids.

@ Accelerando: In the Animal Kingdom, near the um..Dinosaur ride, they have a GIANT Alligator in a small pen. Given what happened last week with the kid and the gorilla, I can't help but notice how easy it would be to jump in there. Are there any precautions that you can speak of regarding this. My wife thinks they sedate the thing.

My house down in Florida, there is a small lake at the end of my back yard. The property is fenced in, bit there is one gator that lives in the lake and he will come out and just chill right on the other side of the fence. He is not real big, about 6-8 feet I gather. You get used to them.

I know exactly the one you are talking about!

I don't know much about the animal care and veterinary facilities of that park. When I go there, I'm just as much of a guest like everyone else being sucked into the wonders of that park. The only time I worked in that park was when I was Production Coordinator of the media team and has shoots. So, i'm not sure what the precautions are for that pen other than "don't toss your child over the barriers." However, Disney's number one priority is the safety of their guests and employees, so i'm sure they thought through all safety measures of that pen and the rest of the animal encounters throughout the park.

Jesus.

I can't even imagine. Don't wanna imagine.

Since my niece was born and having spent more time raising her than anyone but my sisters, I've got such a feral instinct of protection over her. But something like that...you're kind of powerless unless you just get lucky or get the animal to get you instead of the kid (which I'd gladly do in less than a heartbeat). I'd probably drown trying to get the gator, but those fuckers can't be caught if they get underwater.

Even growing up in Louisiana and seeing and being near both crocs and gators, I'm not nearly as nonchalant as I am some of my coonass brethren about them. They're beasts and we're their food (I was about to say unless you're well armed but even then, it's a toss up). No ifs, ands or buts about it. It's one of those few animals that even with some firepower, you just don't fuck around with them. Gotta say, if I was in Florida with my kids/family...pretty sure I wouldn't so much as go near any freshwater rivers, lakes and if I did, you can bet your ass I'm going to be glued at the hip to whoever I'm with if they're not an adult. Plenty of dipshit adults do stupid shit all the time knowing full well the consequences but a kid...they just don't know. :'( :'(

I was just coming into the thread to post this article:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/alligator-attacks-2-year-old-boy-at-disneys-grand-floridian-recovery-effort-continues/ar-AAh40fF?li=BBnb7Kz

This is sickening and so unavoidable. My wife and I are floored. We are DVC members and have been there easily over 30 times. We have seen a few alligators and I find Disney personnel so nonchalant about them. We saw one inside the Magic Kingdom, and told the guy when we got off the steamboat, and he kind of laughed it off. We've gone speed boating in the Seven Seas Lagoon and they're like, yeah there's alligators out there.
I can't believe this hasn't happened before. I wonder how many times alligators have gotten into the pools at night. Especially at The Grand Floridian, where the zero entry pool is so close to the shoreline.
The warning signs on the beach at only state No Swimming. There are no warning signs about alligators. Disney should either eradicate them from their grounds or put up fencing at the shoreline.
I would expect some changes. Disney typically makes changes but it's always after an accidents. Like doors on the parking lot trams. I mean how many people had to have fallen out before they did that?

There are tons of beach-like areas in Disney and many of their resorts. It's only natural a child will be building sandcastles and whatnot. This is disgraceful.

I will say that near the shuffleboard and basketball courts at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, at least there are alligator warning signs.

Awful story. Just awful.

You feel awful for the parents, while at the same time questioning why in the hell they would let their kid swim in the water even though there were apparently NO SWIMMING signs everywhere.  Poor kid didn't know any better, but the parents should have.  Just a crushing story all-around. :(

My understanding was that the child was not swimming. The thing is, there are so many beach front type areas, and with so many kids.
We've walked along those areas plenty of times.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- The Official DTF Crocodile Thread
Post by: King Postwhore on June 15, 2016, 06:31:08 AM
I've been there myself many times.  I do understand but at this point parents need to be the buffer for the child like a car driving by as well not walk in the night when it is to dark to recognize what's coming at them.  Disney has so much to offer, walk anywhere but those beach like areas.

There are times to blame parents for their stupidity. This is not one of those times. Seriously, the age parent shaming on the internet needs to end. The kid was walking on the shore of a beach. Being from Nebraska ,where this family is from, I wouldn't think twice about a gator snatching my kid. I can't even imagine what those parent are going through.

I feel for the parents no doubt.  That one minute of not being on high alert.  I just think that in certain situations like walking on a street or in a parking lot, you have to be the alert one.

If you have a 2-year old, I think I assumed it was just kinda understood that every second of your life is to be spent on high alert, because they can get into anything they want in the blink of an eye, like a f*cking ninja.  Terrible news.

Yep. But as anyone who has had to care for a 2 year old (I've been through it three times) it's no secret that like you mentioned.....it's an amazing thing how they can literally 'vanish' in a second and you'll find them in to something or somewhere you never imagined they'd be able to access or do.

Even with the gorilla incident....there's no way I'm going to lambast a parent for something like this because it's not like that lady wanted her kid to fall in to the gorilla pen or these folks wanted their kid eaten by an alligator. Both instances just illustrate how just moments of lapse judgement can potentially be a life and death lapse of judgment.

This story is F'n brutal. I. Cannot. Imagine.....what these parents are going through right now, and when I dedicate 'real' contemplation and thought to it I begin to tear up and gut wrench. It's just....heartbreaking.

Gators can move very fast on land for short distances a small gator 4-6' can move up to 25 MPH. A big one is only capable of 7-8 MPH. The only real defense is to be aware of the water and that log just might be a gator. The problem is while the big ones are scarier on land and far more lethal in the water than the small ones, Disney does not remove gators until they reach 6' or are a nusaince. the small ones are far more dangerous to children and pets on land. People feed gators which only makes them become more aggressive as they know it is a food source area. People do it a lot at WDW all the time.

I had one removed from the lake behind my house a few weeks ago as he was coming out of the lake far too often and trying to breach the fence, As I said earlier in this topic before this incident. Gators are a way of life around here in Florida.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- The Official DTF Crocodile Thread
Post by: The Trooper on June 15, 2016, 09:34:23 AM
WDW is surrounded by lakes and waterways, There is NO WAY Disney can keep them off property. I know for a fact they monitor the gator population. As I said, once they get over 6', they are removed from property and are relocated or to a gator refuge. Remember they can also walk over land so it is a hard task to control them.

Disney will react and you will now see fences on the lakes around the resort beaches. These are no swimming beaches anyway.

There's no way Disney can control them completely. But, even though it seems like common sense.....is there property loaded  with warning signs and what not to warn everyone of the gator danger?

No, the only signs are no swimming signs on Disney property water areas (which is massive). That will change I gather. Do not place blame on Disney for this (not saying you were). WDW has been around 40 years and never anything like this.

Not placing blame at all. I'm just envisioning the inevitable lawsuit that they'll face for not warning guests about the crocodiles.

I was thinking to myself, how in the world did this gator come up on the beach fast enough to grab this kid? I know the father saw and tried to get the kid back, but the timing seemed off. Like, how far away was this small child? I live in FL, and am very aware of what gators can do. So... now I hear they were actually IN the water. Even if they weren't out far enough to swim ("technically we weren't swimming, since there's a No Swimming sign"), that makes a huge difference in what the gator could do, and how fast it could do it. If that's true, it kinda shifts from just a terrible tragedy, to a somewhat avoidable tragedy.

Fences: dumb idea
"Warning: Alligators” signs: good idea
Reading signs and acting appropriately: great idea

Not to minimize this present tragedy at all, but that article is SO over the top that it borders on being ridiculous.  I would bet top dollar that that kind of potential overreaction to any and every gator sighting by people who are unfamiliar with gators is precisely why Disney opted to go with generic "no swimming" signs rather than signs pointing out the (obvious) reason and saying "beware of alligators."  I would sort of equate it to Disneyland in So. Cal. not having "Earthquake danger awareness" signs and brochures plastered all around that park.  Yes, the potential for disaster is there.  And, yes, it might avoid some loss of life in case a disastrous event were to occur.  But, ultimately, the odds are very slim of something going haywire, but the odds of people overreacting and staying away because they have no real understanding of the phenomenon in the first place is very high.  I'm not saying they still shouldn't have posted specific "gator warning" signs.  But I can understand the thinking behind not doing it, and that article highlights it perfectly.  In any case, now that this has occurred, they pretty much have to.  It's a shame many people will focus on this incident rather than the millions that have passed through the grounds without anything unsafe ever remotely occurring.

We've been on that very spot a number of times. My wife and I have always mentioned that there should be alligator signs posted. I can't believe they're not. That's not hindsight. We've had that conversation many times, including last April when we stayed at the Polynesian. I was actually creeped out because our room was on the ground floor (which I hate).

But then he was asked if he would recommend Disney posting Alligator warning signage and he completely dodged it, saying they had a "partnership" with Disney. Really??

I wonder how much input  they have over law enforcement. With Buena Vista/Reedy Creek or whatever being their actual own cities, they have naturally have say over things. But not fully when I read pieces of info about the founding of WDW.

Seems to be shifting now to a completely avoidable tragedy.

So much fucking this.

I'm sorry for not being a single fucking ounce sorry. Throw all the "you don't know parenting" bullshit at me and all the excuses you (as in the people defending the parents) want but other than having the help of someone buying us food here and there, I raised my sisters and am now raising my niece and have taken both of them to zoos, the beach, pools, etc. countless times and not once has anything happened. It MIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT have something to do with me never once leaving their side, let alone out of my sight. It should be noted I've been called overbearing more than once. I take it as a compliment.

The way I pictured it before was that they were pretty much next to each other and the two year old just happened to be grabbed off the shoreline but most reports now paint a very different picture. I'm not going to sit here and blame it entirely on the parents or say that they deserved it because that's just not true (or warranted). I am however saying that people wanting to pussyfoot around this shit is fucking ridiculous. Same for the kid in the gorilla den. It's someone's fault and it sure as shit isn't the mindless beasts for saying "hey, some food...alone...exposed"; nor is it the kid because...they're children. Any situation that has the potential to be bad is going to be bad when you've got a toddler unsupervised.

It's horribly tragic and makes me sick. What makes me equally sick is halfwit fools attempting to defend the parents as if it was some freak accident or something that isn't pertaining to parenting. Even so, my heart goes out to the parents. It sounds like they were negligent, but it doesn't make it any less horrible. For as much as Disney and/or whoever the fuck owns those grounds is to blame, it's still on the parents (although there probably should be a BIG ASS sign posted every two feet given how absolutely dimwitted many people are; and I'll bet you there will be now). If you live in Florida and aren't on a constant watch for those monsters, you're a god damn mindless moron and that's about as sweetly as I can put it. It's not like a snake in the grass. It's a hulking beast that literally lurks in the water waiting for EXACTLY such an occasion. I'm also going to go out on a SUPER THIN LIMB and say that those parents will be like white on motherfucking rice with their other kids. That...is not a coincidence.  :-\

But yeah after this if nothing is done...I'm going to have some bad news for my niece because fuck Disney in their crusty, money-filled asses if this isn't mended as much as they possibly can with all of their billions. I mean at this point with all the news it's getting, there should be animal control, fences, signs every ten feet, more warning signs before you even reach the shore, and then some.

I wonder how much input  they have over law enforcement.

You wonder? The guy just told a young couple that they found their dead son and he can't even say that he would recommend posting alligator warning signs.

I didn't fully read/watch everything. I'm more speculating beyond this, and what potentially more nefarious things havd/ould occur. But then that gets into P/R Forum realms.

Even though the signs would be bad "show," they will have to do something.

This croc is gonna feast on that dude. Reptiles can't be 'trained' and they don't feel 'love' or any of that stuff. They are perfect killing machines....all of them....well, most of them. But especially crocs. This guys dead and he doesn't even know it.

It really is a show of how astoundingly delusional humans are/can be. We can feel a connection when not only is there not one, but it is impossible to form one. It's both beautiful and horribly fucking hilarious (read: pathetic; or in this case downright moronic) in the worst way possible. It's basically like seeing some creepy stalker dude thinking that he is genuinely in love and loved back by some random woman he doesn't even know except its even worse than that because this dumb motherfucker thinks that these things are thinking anything about him. Fact is if they are it's nothing more than instinct... and it is all instinctual...and when the instinct kicks in...he'll be in the news post mortem. It's amazing that anyone with anything past (or even ending with) a high school level of knowledge in zoology can think that animals such as sharks, crocs, etc. are somehow "friends" to humans. "Oh, he didn't eat me and we're hanging out. MUST BE MAH FRAN!" Zero. Fucking. Sympathy. (SW's next album title confirmed)

Darwin's theory at work.

It's been a really horrible week in my hometown, and that alligator incident at The Grand Floridian are one of the many things that was really tragic that week. I haven't said much about it, mainly because of my ties with the company. I can't imagine what those parents are feeling. I will say this: In that hotel, and the other Disney hotels in that lagoon and other locations around the Walt Disney World resort, there are not only signs that say "No Swimming" but "Please Do Not Feed Wildlife" that includes an alligator symbol. That same signage is at the Grand Floridian. It is illegal in the state of Florida to feed alligators, because the gator will become comfortable with human surroundings, and will attack. If a gator is reported to have been tainted such as, it is usually hunted down and killed.

Disney's number one priority for their guests and employees is safety. They are a reacting company, and I guarantee you after what happened last week, you'd have to toss your kid into the lake for them to get in there from now on. I just hope they don't take away the boats and kayaks.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- The Official DTF Crocodile Thread
Post by: TAC on June 20, 2016, 12:59:31 PM
Well, I absolutely recall the No Swimming signs, but I'm honestly drawing a blank on the Don't Feed The Wildlife. And even if it is there, with a small alligator symbol, that's a lot different than a Danger-Beware Of Alligators sign. They have one of those by the Basketball/Shuffleboard courts near Kidani Village. That gets your attention.

Disney cannot set up a beach like location, with beach chairs and all, and think a small alligator symbol on a Don't Feed will be sufficient.

As you say, Disney IS a reactive company, but they are not a preventative company. I said in a post earlier, how many people feel out of the trams before they put the doors on? I'm sorry, but announcing children should sit in the middle is not sufficient.

We were diving in Cozumel last year and they had spotted a 4' saltwater croc right at the little pier we do our safety stops between dives.   Crystal clear 4-6' water. I was a little bummed we missed it.  I would have slid in the water with it for some vid.  Any bigger than that...no.  We did a few dives with Bull Sharks a few years back, that got the old blood pumping!  One of my other bucket list critters would be hanging with Komodo Dragons in Indonesia.  The boats make stops in the national park during Dive liveaboard trips to visit them.

So Friday night I stumbled across "audio" of a bear eating Timothy Treadwell, a guy who lived with bears every summer for over a decade. Apparently the tape is fake but the sounds are so disturbing it actually kept me awake that night, and I don't freak out that easily. Even as a fake that audio was terrifying. Which led me to watching and reading about brown bears all Saturday morning.

'Grizzly Man' by Werner Herzog is the documentary. It's very interesting and eventually very sad. Treadwell was very careless and convinced himself that he was more a part of nature and the animals that he was fascinated in watching than he was with the modern world. And in a lot of ways he was. But you cannot get comfortable with wild Grizzly bears and believe they won't eat you to stock up fat for their hibernation.....

I am kinda wishing I contract Covid19 now, it sounds much more pleasant than facing a swarm of Murder Hornets (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/murder-hornets-honeybees-united-states/).

Quote
WSDA says on their website that the hornets do not typically go after humans, but if they do, not even beekeeping suits can protect against the hornets' stingers, which are longer and more dangerous than a bee's.

Researchers say the sting of a murder hornet is painful and packed with neurotoxins. Even if someone is not allergic to the hornet, multiple stings have the potential to kill.

Conrad Bérubé, a beekeeper and entomologist in Nanaimo, British Columbia, told The New York Times that the day after he got stung, he legs ached like he had the flu, and the sting was the most painful sting he's ever experienced.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- Animals...WTF??

Yeah, I read about these. Scary af.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/02/us/asian-giant-hornet-washington.html

Quote
Crews were able to track down the hive on Vancouver Island. Conrad Bérubé, a beekeeper and entomologist in the town of Nanaimo, was assigned to exterminate it.
He set out at night, when the hornets would be in their nest. He put on shorts and thick sweatpants, then his bee suit. He donned Kevlar braces on his ankles and wrists.
But as he approached the hive, he said, the rustling of the brush and the shine of his flashlight awakened the colony. Before he had a chance to douse the nest with carbon dioxide, he felt the first searing stabs in his leg — through the bee suit and underlying sweatpants.
“It was like having red-hot thumbtacks being driven into my flesh,” he said. He ended up getting stung at least seven times, some of the stings drawing blood.

Wow, that's crazy!

Apparently Santa summers in Australia.

It's kind of rare a snake would come out and intentionally try and attack someone, that's definitely wild.

Almost no presents for anyone anymore.

Came across these two last week on a walk - too busy fighting each other to bother anyone else  :)

Crocs got nothing on Miska the cat.

https://mynorthwest.com/3460416/infamous-bellevue-cat-wins-large-settlement-due-to-conflict-of-interest/

Quote
Dating back to 2014, Regional Animal Services of King County, contracted by the City of Bellevue, issued violations for claims that Miska trespassed, taunted other pets in the neighborhood, and committed other infractions.

Miska’s neighbor claimed the cat has killed “dozens” of pets over the last seven years, including ducks, chickens, and rabbits. Reports from Animal Control acquired through a public disclosure request stated these allegations dated back to 2012, including reports of her “stalking” a neighborhood dog.

It happens all the time here with shark attacks.  Yes, people go into the fucking ocean, get bitten by a shark, and there's a fucking outcry and somehow they are able to locate the shark and cull it.  It blows my fucking mind.  We are such a fucked up species.

There's a reason we're getting attacked, because we are fucking stupid and going into their property.  If a shark or croc makes its way into our backyard at home, what the fuck would we do?

There's also a reason why Minska the cat is a cunt.  Because he knows he's smarter than this dumbshit human owners.

The whole idea of shooting the shark is fucking stupid too. After a shark attack, yeah, they go out in a boat on THE OCEAN with a million sharks and somehow, they find the ONE shark that attacked a surfer.
I mean, are people that gullable?

And I'm sorry cat owners.. if your pet cat thought he could, he'd fucking kill and eat you.

Yeah, it's not like they have fucking tracking devices or something.  If they then do kill something, how is it not random and just to try stop the outcry from fucking retards.  You take that risk going into the ocean.  You get you're leg bitten off, sorry pal, bad fucking luck.

100% true.  The way a cat looks at you is exactly that. "If I could kill you, I would.......but since I can't, fucking feed me you peasant or I'll claw you're face off anyway."

It's a vicious circle. A shark gets killed by a fisherman, so the sharks scout the local beach and look at one of the swimmers and say "Hey that's the one that shot Jabberjaw". And then they go back to the Shark Reef and say..."we got him!"

Nothing too interesting in this article but in Australia, looks like they are bulking up, skipping the fish and moving to pork and fucking more.  These fuckers are gonna take over.  This just popped into my MSN feed haha.

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/techandscience/saltwater-crocodiles-are-eating-a-lot-of-feral-hogs-in-australia/ar-AAX1Thz?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=5474b29f6ecf427cb0a91c7112282d23

Saltwater crocodiles in Australia’s Northern Territory are thriving, and the reason why might surprise you. The population of the big reptiles in the area rose from a low of around 3,000 in 1971 to more than 100,000 today. And it turns out, a proliferation of wild pigs might be fueling the croc comeback

Ha... full disclosure, up here on Long Island, my wife and I enjoy kayaking on the sound and some of the local rivers. When we move down to Florida later this year, we fully intend on continuing to kayak in the many Florida state and national parks. But I don't think there's a body of water there that won't have at least a gator or three.

That said, a couple summers ago, we were swimming on one of the many beaches on the south shore when they suddenly called everybody out of the water. Apparently, a great white had been spotted close by...  shades of the movie Jaws, which was set in Long Island.

Let's just stand around and watch a man get killed by a croc.  I mean, I know there's nothing they could do but quite bizarre behaviour.

Call me a chicken shit, but I am not jumping in there and fighting a croc.  There could be others around to devour you while fighting that one.  All bets are off if it is a loved one where adrenaline kicks in and you don't think about it, but otherwise I am not going after a croc.

Oh yeah, I ain't risking my life jumping in there unless it's my girlfriend or mother or something.  Some random, sorry pal.  But the amount of people and the circumstances around the video is fucking fucked up.

They are fucking dinosaurs that still roam the earth.

I still don't get why they go out of their way to find "the" alligator to put it down.  Because that was the mean one?  Had it been another alligator, he would have lifted her to safety out of the water?  Seriously.

Don't get me wrong, the less 'gators in the world, the better, but that logic just escapes me.

Its true though, same with sharks.  They hunt the specific animal and kill it.  That's just absurd.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- Animals...WTF??
Post by: Zook on August 16, 2022, 11:11:02 PM
Once the gator knows it can take down a human and has that taste for human flesh, it's going to try again. Anyone fishing or having a picnic by the lake will be in danger. That's why they have "don't feed the gators" signs. Like a stray cat, they'll keep coming back for more, and eventually have a bigger appetite. Relocating it won't solve the problem so they have to kill it.
Title: Re: Swimming with Crocs- Animals...WTF??

Maybe relocating the humans could solve that problem.

I love how it was originally three lions trying to cross, but by the time the hippo gets there, there are only two. If you watch it again, about halfway before the hippo gets there, you can see one of the lions retreating and hauling ass back to land.  He saw that hippo and was like, "Abandon plan!!" :lol :lol

Honestly the speed the Hippo got in the water was the most impressive part. I'm not that suprised about the Hippos badassery seeing the pecking order is mostly bigger animal = win despite reputation.

I love how they all turn their heads when the Hippo enters the water with a splash like the fuck?
