Title: Dream Theater: The Astonishing Game
Post by: SjundeInseglet on February 27, 2016, 12:06:58 PM
Can't say we didn't see it coming!  ;)

"Dream Theater: The Astonishing Game

The first ever Dream Theater game is coming your way.

Prepare to step into the dystopian future as described in the concept album The Astonishing. Travel to The Great Northern Empire Of The Americas (G.N.E.A.) where any dedication, investment or interest in the arts has all but been abandoned. The very soul of what was once real music is lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.

In this setting a young man from the Endless Isleland, Gabriel, emerges with a voice so profound it moves everyone that listens, transporting them back to a time where true art created by humans was celebrated and consumed as the ultimate nourishment for the soul.

In the game you will follow the story-line of the album through a series of matches between the rebel militia and the forces of G.N.E.A. in a board-based tactical strategy game! The game is available soon on iOS & Android (both mobile and tablets), as well as for PC and MAC."

Indeed, I hope this works well. Didn't expect them to go for this sort of thing.

I like how it upholds the ancient tradition of a game totally disregarding the existing movie/book plot and just take the characters to do something entirely different :lol

Those kinds of things aren't usually my cup of tea, but if it costs less than five or ten bucks, I'll probably buy it to support the band. :tup

I mean, just to get this out of the way, this will be one of those "themed" games where they plugged in the TA topic into a generic game engine. "Proper" games need 20+ full-time employees working on it, this game will not be that.
That said, I will check it out of course.

On the games' website, it says that it will be a free download (with extra material available for a small price).

Yeah, sounds like a pretty stock gameplay style, not like some detailed RPG or something. If you're into that particular type of game, that's not a bad thing.

I just read a bit about the company. One of their most recent games, UHR (from 2014) was based on music & story by a metal singer from Norway (the company's country). So I guess they knew what they were doing when working with John :)

Also, the company's website states that The Astonishing will be a "dynamic digital board game". I just saw the trailer for UHR (also a digital board game, according to them), and judging by it, I think this game is going to be some sort of mixture between Mario Party, Worms and chess.

I loved playing to all three of those, so I think I'll probably enjoy playing this game as well!

I can see every character having their own frases every time you select them.

Ahrys: Brother, can you hear me?
Daryus: YOU DARE DEFY THE PRINCE?!
Faythe: My music player!
Nafaryus: haHAHAHAhhAHAhahaHAHA

Then, you move them to their respective places.

This is from the company's Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/turbotapegames/posts/1063827040305387 (https://www.facebook.com/turbotapegames/posts/1063827040305387)

(...) The game is based on the album’s story, setting, and characters, giving players an opportunity to further experience the world of Ravenskill and the G.N.E.A. while battling Empirical forces and securing man-made artistry’s place in the futuristic world set forth in the universe of The Astonishing. Tactical gameplay and a storyline that progresses with the player make this a can’t-miss experience for gamers and music fans alike. The game will share core gameplay mechanics with TTG’s critically acclaimed UHR: Warlords, with several enhancements for this new project. The game will be available as a free download for iOS, Android, PC and Mac expected in late April, 2016. - with a one-time fee to continue playing past the first two missions. The game features both single-player and multi-player pass-and-play same-device functionality.
Two additional Downloadable Content Packs (DLCs) are planned for the game, and are to release shortly after the original launch. (...)

I love Conan O'Brien, particularly his "Clueless Gamer" clips. I know it's unlikely, but I hope he reviews/plays this game!

Ha, now that I re-read it, you're right!

So, the game won't be released for another 2 months. Any thoughts on what those 2 missions might be about?

Maybe you are Gabriel and initially have to learn how to play "When Your Time Has Come" on guitar? :P

:lol Yup.

As regards to the amount of time and effort required make a game like this, it's clearly a mobile game rather than major production, and it'll almost certainly picky-back off an exising engine of some kind. Frankly, a couple of skilled game developers could do it between them.

Would be nice if it included some alternate versions/b-side material of the album. For example, the orchestral tracks or extended/repeating intrumental sections to serve as the soundtrack during battles or as a menu theme. I mean, a game needs a soundtrack and in the first (right?) DT game you simply do not use some random stock tunes. And the regular tracks would be awkward as a game soundtrack.

Or maybe Raw Dog will loop troughout the entire game, people seem to love that track.

Anyways, will buy because it is a DT game and I am curious. Still, since many of the assets and the story and music is already there, it may be a decent game even if produced at a low budget. Many small developers have recently surprised me with some neat (phone) games.

Given the name of the company ("Turbo Tape" was a program for Commodore 64), and looking at UHR, it strikes me as an "Archon" type of game.

Availability for iOS and Android means it will lack depth, and the developer has only produced garbage before.  Don't get your hopes up unless you have no point of reference for decent games.

I think I'd rather play Ed Hunter again.

What Dream Theater really needs is a Virtual Reality Experience for "The Astonishing" ;) Just imagine walking around in some of these places/spaces. I know, the whole VR thing is still new to many and perhaps a bit costly at the moment but as somebody who has done a lot in VR already I can assure you that this will be the future. It would have been the perfect opportunity for to do something in that regard for this album. Just my 3 cents.

Great interview! Many interesting and new bits of information (to me at least):

-I had assumed it was John who asked for the game to be non-violent; looks like I was wrong.
-Now I understand what 'pass and play' means. Great!
-If the company considers including 8-bit music which doesn't exist right now, I imagine the release of the game won't happen any time soon. Maybe by the end of the year?
-What was the "special bonus" you thanked Ivar for? Did he show you new images/video of the game?

By the way, Damien, I also read your recent interview with Jordan. I liked this one bit in particular - I think it's great:

"Is the music so crazy that you need to do crazy videos :) ?
Yes."

I want to thank you again for mentioning my post to John in March. It was a great first half of the year for me - new (and amazing, in my opinion) album, being mentioned to John, then taking part in a Q&A with JP/JR in Luna Park (I got to ask the first question :) ), and attending the live show later that night. It's the closest I've been to a favourite band, and this year marks a decade since I became a fan, so I've been feeling really happy.

I got access to the beta version and they will sent me another version by the end of the month.
The game seems nice even if the beta is far from being finished (no videos, no music only an instrumental version of A Better Life, no spell effects, no multiplayer, no ranking; no tutorial...) but it's easy to understand. You should see the Astonishing story as a good way to get to know the game and then play it online.

The game is not complete but the beta already includes the visuals,  the music and the story of the Astonishing : there's already the instrumental version of A Better Life, some videos broadcast during the concert (the workers working at the factory), the map available on the website, pictures of the main characters and elements from the official story. What is nice is that every unit (the guitarist, the judge...) has many written quotes from famous persons.

It's awesome that they are giving out tickets to shows and aftershow passes , however what if someone won the contest during the eligible period that lived in North America and the prize was passes to a German or French show ? Don't get me wrong this is an awesome chance to win prizes for free but I think they should allow you to pick tickets to an upcoming show of your choice . What if there's only a handful of people from Germany who qualify and could actually win the tickets to that show ? I feel like lots of prizes will go unclaimed due to distance if that is the case .

Great game however , strategy and math come into play a lot in this game and it's fairly simple to learn ( I'm he worst at learning games and it took me less than 30 mins to learn strategy )

Tickets and aftershow passes are fairly easy for them to just move around. I wouldn't worry about that.

Awesome Noxon !

The game is really fun and strategic so far . I've made it to the 4th level already . I think it's easier playing as ravenskill, there seem to be a few more attack options . A well thought out game with good interaction 9/10. Plus I enjoy the instrumental parts of the astonishing during gameplay

So the game is pretty cool. I've only had about twenty minutes to mess with it, and most of that was the tutorial, but I'm digging it so far. I've played one complete game and got my ass handed to me by the AI. Seems to be a decent amount of strategy involved and feels like 21st century chess. I can't wait to actually learn all the functionality and moves as I'm basically button mashing at this point without a full understanding of the game's mechanics. But again, that's me being a noob and not the game. This seems really thought out and shows good potential.

You have the ability to play online. I haven't checked that out yet, so I'm not sure if it's random opponents only or if you have the ability to play against a friend. If you can play against specific users, I think a DTF bracket tourney would be pretty fun!.

I got it yesterday - come on it's just 3 bucks, how could you not.  Seems like an ok game.  I haven't had much time to do much past just messing around.  In fact, last night all I did was let the music play and listened to that.  How many songs are on there?  Is seems like only 3 but maybe there are more when you play it longer.

I'm really terrible at this game. I can't get my purple meter up.

Maybe I'm too old for this shit.

I tried going through the long-ass tutorial but I just wasn't "getting it".  I'm still happy to support the guys and I'll try again later but right now I can't handle it for some reason.

I ended up uninstalling it from my phone. 500MB is a lot, and I feel it's not really meant for the phone. Tablet and bigger is probably where it becomes playable.

People just don't have the time for music games any more.

I'm downloading it now. For $3, how can one complain?

It's like you're new here or something.

I've finally gotten the hang of this game and had three victories in a row over the weekend. Really fun game.

I downloaded the game yesterday, and already completed the first 6 levels.
To those who have played aswell:

1. Is that it for now? The six levels?
2. If I enter my e-mail address today, will my results from yesterday enter the competition? Or should I start all over?

Thanks!

The story mode is just there to make you discover the game. So yes, it is over.
If you enter your email today, you can still take part in the competitions (but as you are living in South America, it will be useless as long as you need to attend the gigs in Europe to get your gift).

Thanks for the reply. And yes, I won't be able to attend any shows for the next few months. I assume there's the chance of offering the tickets back, to other lucky contestants.

Still, I might be able to win a vinyl!

Yes, they give the tickets to other contestants: I was going to the Paris show when I got an email telling me that I won!!! a ticket for a Scandinavian show. So I told Fredrik to give it to another person. He is a nice person.
