I liked the last two albums, but for now I've gotta go with The Astonishing.

I'm between ADTOE and TA. Still can't decide, ADTOE is the Dream Theater i've been used to love, and TA is something so different and experimental that i need to see where it ranks among the band's catalog.

The Astonishing blows all the other away. The only one that's close is BC&SL. I hope it still holds up a year from now (and ten).

ADTOE or SC I guess.

TA would've been the best for me if not for the second act. I like Moment of Betrayal and Heaven's Cove and then it's a total disaster until Our New World comes in.

I'm on the same boat as you. Loved ADTOE but TA is getting better and better but it is still as you said, different and experimental.

I managed to make a 20-or-so track version of TA and flows better to my ears.

One week ago I would have said DT12 by far. But The Astonishing is really good. However it's too early to really tell how well it will hold, so I'll vote DT12 for now.

These bunch of albums are my least favorite. With that said I still like them and The Astonishing is definitely the best out of them all. Black Clouds is the worst.

Out of the RR era I'd have to say TA followed by ADTOE. Both have good production and all the instruments breathe. TA has the far superior drum sound of the two, and being a huge fan of drums in general, I believe the drums need a good pocket in the mix. I think TA has that. I appreciate both albums because both were a swing in a different direction. ADTOE replaced the balls to the wall, "raaaawr!" metal feel of BC&SL with a lighter touch that was really good to hear. With TA, it's another departure in that it's the most cinematic music they've ever done. All the tracks breathe, but they have a killer drum sound that gives it a power that ADTOE is missing. Not to mention how emotional the music and playing is. I think that's been, not missing really, but at a minimum on the last few RR releases.

My ranking:

1. Systematic Chaos
2. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
3. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
4. Dream Theater

*The Astonishing - not familiar enough with it to rank it yet.  A new album needs a breaking in period before being ranked against albums a person has loved for years.

I still can't take any polls about ranking TA seriously yet.
Voting among the rest, it's kind of splitting hairs (aside from DT12).
Title: Re: The Best RoadRunner Album ?
Post by: KevShmev on February 05, 2016, 10:52:22 PM
Yep, it's still too early to accurately edge TA, but in time, I can see it topping the first two Mangini albums, for me anyway.

Amazingly, I am starting to like DT12 as much as ADTOE.  ADTOE's best two or three songs are better than anything from DT12, but DT12 is so freaking consistent (every song is an 8 or 9 out of 10). Nothing on ADTOE is bad, but I am still pretty bored with On the Backs of Angels, and while I like both Outcry and Lost Not Forgotten, neither get much play with me anymore.

I was telling a friend, who is also a big DT fan, about this last week, how if I had to bust Dream Theater down to one mp3 CD (700 MB, nearly 6 1/2 hours worth of music) for the car, ADTOE would get 4-5 songs, but if I had to do two, it'd still probably only get 5 songs (This Is the Life, Bridges in the Sky, Far from Heaven, Breaking All Illusions and Beneath the Surface).

I like both SC and BC&SL, but I think they are probably the two least best DT records (I used to put 8V lower than BC&SL, but not anymore).  SC is a fun record on the right day, but lacks anything really awesome, and BC&SL probably has the least identity of any DT record to date.

I voted Systematic Chaos, but yeah, The Astonishing is easily looking like it's gonna bump it down for me. I can't get enough of the new album. But as of right now, Systematic Chaos still holds a nearer and dearer place in my heart.
Title: Re: The Best RoadRunner Album ?

TA would've been the best for me if not for the second act.
Pretty much the same, I would put it at a close second if it was just the first act though. But the 2nd act brings the whole thing down. I love Moment of Betrayal and The Walking Shadow, I like every song inbetween plus My Last Farewell. But every song after that bores me to tears.

BC&SL, because it's got The Count of Tuscany. I recently rediscovered it, and I cannot find anything wrong with it. I even like the verses with the ridiculous lyrics. The atmospheric JP section with the subsequent ending is pure Dream Theater gold.

My Roadrunner Ranking currently would be:

1) The Astonishing
2) Dream Theater (2 & 3 sometimes alternate!)

4) Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Astonishing might be at the top for me. It's so different from the rest, though, that it's hard to tell.

Black Clouds at number two. Only Rite of Passage and Wither are mediocre, the rest are solid solid songs.

Then the self-titled. Again with many great tracks (but nothing I think as great as Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany.)

Then Systematic Chaos, an album whose dark mood carries it far.

A Dramatic Turn of Events is OK. Most of the songs are quite forgettable, however. It comes in last for me.

I voted Dream Theater. To me, it's the sound of a band at their most mature, and I guess it's their most collaborative work (well, James didn't write lyrics, but he gets credited for most songs' music). Plus, it has "Illumination Theory"!

I don't enjoy "The Looking Glass" and "Enigma Machine" very much, but the rest of the album is gold, I think.

It's been a year since this thread was posted in and also since The Astonishing came out.

I listened to DT12 last night and I really enjoyed it. The snare is a bit muddy and overall a bit loud but is a great album. Like a better BC&SL to me.

ADTOE is nice. Also better than BC&SL & SC to me but nowhere near as good as Octavarium...

Bridges In The Sky, This Is The Life... Outcry...Lost Not Forgotten ...Great.

The Astonishing is still my favourite RoadRunner album. Nice production and lots of quality highs and not too many low lows.

I voted TA, because I think it's the best RR album as a whole, but the last 3 albums (ADTOE, DT and TA) are, to me, much better than all the other DT albums after SDOIT.

I rank them:

- TA
- ADTOE or DT12
- DT12 or ADTOE
- SC
- BC&SL

I should say that I love SC and rank it higher than most other albums, just find the MM era albums much better. About Black Clouds, I used to like it more, but now I think it's one of the worst DT albums. TCOT is reaaaaally good, though.

1. The Astonishing. - Most consistent. I can easily listen to all of Act I in one go - no problem.

2. Dream Theater - Good songs all around. Good production if a little hot - and has that weird snare sound. But no A Nightmare To Remember boring-ness.

3. A Dramatic Turn Of Events. - Some might say they played it safe but to me it was a good comeback after they were getting in a creative rut after SC & Black Clouds. ***

4. Black Clouds & Silver Linings. - Nice production. ANTR gets a little tedious near the end. But makes up for it with The Best of Times solo and Shattered Fortress & The Count of Tuscany.

5. Systematic Chaos. Such an odd album. Great opener. Constant motion is decent. Forsaken is ok....Repentance drags and TMOLS does a bit too. ITPOE II doesn't live up to the first half.

..So by the looks of this - i've preferred each successive album since Black Clouds.

*** - I haven't listened to all of ADTOE in a while so i'll do that now.

I have no idea why any of the posters over the last couple of days are surprised that The Astonishing is winning.  The poll was originally done right after the album came out.  That's when all of these votes were cast.

Mmm

-I like the balls that SC and BC had even though there's some cringeworthy moments.
-I like the music on ADTOE a lot and its diversity, a very tasteful blend between Images and FII.
-DT12 hasn't really aged well. I played it yesterday but found it a bit dull (there's 3 songs that I absolutely love)
-TA - I like it a lot with my custom playlist. As a whole, it fatigues me quite a lot.

I voted for ADTOE.
Title: Re: The Best RoadRunner Album ?

Yeah, whatever the newest album is when a poll like this is done has a bit of an unfair advantage.  That's just the way these things go.

I think I would probably put them like this:

1.  Six Degrees
2.  SFAM
3.  ADTOE - I still love it, and I am still blown away that, so late in a band's career, they could put out something so consistently incredible from start to finish.
4.  DT12 - Picked up right where ADTOE left off.  Perhaps even MORE consistent than ADTOE, but the highs just don't reach quite as high for me.
5.  I&W
6.  Awake
7.  The Astonishing - I finally feel like I can rank this one.  Right now, I definitely listen to it more than any of the albums I rank ahead of it.  And I love it right now more than I did at release time.  But it has settled in enough that I realistically feel the six albums I rank ahead of it are just a tad stronger and that I enjoy them a tad bit more.
8.  Octavarium (nugget!)
9.  SC - On the strength of ITPOE, Forsaken, Constant Motion, and TDEN, this album gets a nod over one of the classics.  I might put it over Octavarium some days as well.
10.  FII
11.  TOT
12.  Black Clouds
13.  WDADU

So, yeah, TA at #3 of the RR era for me.

I find it hard to rank DT12 since it is a good album but I don't really like Surrender to Reason or Along For the Ride much and Illumination Theory is far from their best epic and that snare sound.

I'd like to know why you ranked Black Clouds as #12? Do you think it's so terrible?

1 - Astonishing
2 - SFAM
3 - Black Clouds - You guys are Mangini fanboys, this album rules  :yarr
4 - Octavarium
5 - Images
6 - Six Degrees I like the second disc a lot more
7 - Systematic Chaos
8 - Falling Into Infinity
9 - Awake
10 - Dramatic Turn - This album has grown on me a LITTLE bit, maybe it could be moved up a few places.
11 - DT12
12 - Train Of Thought (What the hell is Vacant even supposed to be anyway?)

For this band my ranking changes a lot Right now I'd say:

1 SFAM
2 SDOIT
3 Octavarium
4 FII
5 SC
6 ADTOE
7 I&W
8 TA
9 TOT
10 DT12
11 BC&SL
12 Awake

But dude typing it make me so sad putting stuff like Awake not even in a Top 10. An Album like awake would be an undisputed top 3 Album for any other band. DT makes it hard for us. How can they  :P

Nothing on that list is terrible.  It's just that DT has 11 better albums.

What does anything in your post have to do with the thread topic?

How is it possible 54% says TA? Really?

I guess I don't "get" that one yet. I voted DT12 but both SC and BCASL are close.

See, for me, the thing about Awake is JLBs voice is so incredible. And KM plays so different from Derek and Jordan. And there's no bad or filler at all.

Here's the answer.

I have no idea why any of the posters over the last couple of days are surprised that The Astonishing is winning.  The poll was originally done right after the album came out.  That's when all of these votes were cast.

Indeed, I rank Black Clouds 12 as well. The album isn't bad at all, and TCOT is one of DT's best songs, but the whole album just feels aimless, as if they didn't know where to take it musically and just wrote heavy, long songs for the sake of it. Still, compared to any other band out there, this album is great.

I voted for TA back in the day and would do it again...

ADTOE

SC

BC&SL

Yep, it's still too early to accurately edge TA, but in time, I can see it topping the first two Mangini albums, for me anyway.

Amazingly, I am starting to like DT12 as much as ADTOE.  ADTOE's best two or three songs are better than anything from DT12, but DT12 is so freaking consistent (every song is an 8 or 9 out of 10). Nothing on ADTOE is bad, but I am still pretty bored with On the Backs of Angels, and while I like both Outcry and Lost Not Forgotten, neither get much play with me anymore.

13 months later, I think I will take The Astonishing as the pick here.  Despite its flaws (disc 2 is a little spotty at times, and the story is kinda lame), it's musically so good overall that I can overlook them.

As much as I loved ADTOE right after it came out and for a while after that, I find that I never listen to it anymore, except for a few songs which I'll randomly turn on here and there.   I think part of it is the sound of the album. It sounds so muddy that I get ear fatigue if I listen to too many songs from it in a row.

DT12 has aged really well for me.  While nothing on it would be in my top, or even second, tier of favorite DT songs, I like everything on it a lot and it's a very consistent listen.  And I am fine with the sound of that one (I listen to the HD version, which helps).

I'd also back TA a second time if the poll were redone.

TA still in the top for me as well. Blown away a year ago and the feeling remains. I think this record will get it`s true credit sometime in the future when new people catch on and the sceptics go back to it.

I so hope you're right. Us appreciators of TA are sadly few and far between. We must band together to withstand the negative forces.

Yeah it's a bit annoying how some people are saying The Astonishing is ONLY winning because the album had just come out.

because people couldn't possibly enjoy that album THAT much :lolpalm:

Reminds me of when people say " Avatar was ONLY that successful because it was in 3D..." - Right. it made nearly $3bn . if you take 33% off for 3D sales ( roughly )

- It's STILL the highest grossing movie of all time...

In terms of production (sound-wise):
BC&SL
SC
ADTOE
TA
DT12

Since I prefer how they used to sound pre-Chycki.

The albums as a whole musically would be like:
ADTOE
TA
DT12
BC&SL
SC

Even though I find the epics in both BC&SL and SC to stand above the rest. ITPOE and TCOT are both memorable, atmospheric songs that are hard to beat.
