Alright apparently the time has come for me to do another Song Roulette!
First things first we need participants, so far I have:
Train of Naught
Parama
Scorpion
Senecadawg2
Ultimetalhead
Shadow Ninja 2.0
Stadler
Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Sacul
Fluffy Lothario
Probably looking for 6-8 participants, depending on interest.
As far as format, we'll be looking at something pretty standard. Probably eight rounds, some with themes, some open. As usual themed rounds will be scored both on how much I like the song and how much it fits the theme.
For scoring, I'm gonna do it one of two ways, haven't quite decided yet. Either each song will be scored with a value of 1-5, or the songs will be ranked, and the number one song will get 8 points if there are eight participants, number two would get 7, and so on. Participants can weigh in on that if they have a preference.
Here's my last.fm: https://www.last.fm/user/Genowyn
However you may note looking at it that the last scrobbles come from 2013. I mostly listen to music on Spotify now and i had not set up to scrobble from Spotify, but that is now corrected, so hopefully as I listen on my Spotify in the coming days you'll get a better representation of what I'm into now.
So tl;dr right now we need volunteers and any opinions on the scoring system.
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree (Post Signify)
Opeth (Pre Heritage)
Devin Townsend
Coheed and Cambria
The Dear Hunter
Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Pink Floyd
Rush
Stolen Babies
Protest the Hero
Queensryche
Tool
Pendulum
Eisley
Dir en grey
Avenged Sevenfold
-
I'll play because I'm addicted to roulettes.
-
I've never played in a roulette with the 1-8 ranked worst to best score system, I guess it would be interesting but I can't tell you what's more fun.
Also, you planning on making a rough version of a banned list? Or should we just base our options on the last.fm
-
I could write up a list of bands I am familiar with if that's what you mean. May be more useful than the out of date last.fm
-
I prefer rankings when hosting roulettes myself, but that's mainly because songs to have an incredibly slim grading margin when I don't rank - like, I rarely give anything outside the 6-9 range. But in the end that's your call - as a player, I have no preference either way.
-
i really dislike ranking systems :lol
-
Hey I can join this. It doesn't even matter if I know what kind of music you like because I don't think about my entries at all. :lol
-
I'd like to be in, if possible; just need some clarity if there are bands you don't want to hear from, or if you are leaving it to us to take a stab at submitting something we like and think you'll like.
-
So here is a list of bands you should probably avoid as I am pretty familiar with their catalogues. If anything else comes to mind as things go on I will update this list:
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree (Post Signify)
Opeth (Pre Heritage)
Devin Townsend
Coheed and Cambria
The Dear Hunter
Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Pink Floyd
Rush
Stolen Babies
Protest the Hero
Queensryche
-
shortest banned list ever :lol
works for me, gives me lots of options.
btw you're probably going to be exposed to Ayreon at some point if that's not just something you left off the list accidentally
-
I'm only really familiar with Human Equation. And that's why i'm apprehensive about this sort of list - there are plenty of bands where I'm only really familiar with one or two albums.
-
I have no ideas of your tastes so I'm wondering if I should play or not :P
-
When in doubt: Don't be a fucking wuss and join the roulette :metal
-
I kind of like scores 1-8, as a judge, because it makes the job easier on you in doing the scores. It can be hard to rank consistently across genres and over the course of the roulette, otherwise, in my opinion. Also, like Scorpion mentioned, it can be hard to differentiate much between all the contestants if you're a particularly easy grader. If that makes any sense...
-
When in doubt: Don't be a fucking wuss and join the roulette :metal
I'm running a roulette and participating on 2, so maybe I'll have to let this pass :P
Also, I should be studying :lol
It can be hard to rank consistently across genres and over the course of the roulette, otherwise, in my opinion.
Good point, but I'd say, Genowyn, just score depending on how much you enjoyed it, indifferent of styles and genres :P
-
i just dislike that in a really consistent round where the worst score is, say, a 8 and the best is a 9.5 by a 0 to 10 scale, in a ranking system, the 9.5 gets 7 points more than the 8 :lol
this is coming from someone whose only roulette victory was in a roulette with a ranking system rather than a scoring system, too :P
-
Never done a roulette before but if you still need participants I'll give it a go.
-
Alright so we're up to 8 participants. I will leave it open for as many as 10, but whatever happens I'll post round one tomorrow afternoon.
I've decided to go with a scoring system instead of ranking.
-
I could join, if there is need of more players. Your taste is not much like mine, but I could just send you all sorts and see how it goes down.
-
Your taste is not much like mine, but I could just send you all sorts and see how it goes down.
me and shadow ninja are already both doing this, so you'll be fine :P
-
What the hell, I'll play.
-
Alright that makes 10 players so we'll cut it off there. First round will go up tomorrow.
-
Alright so let's get this show on the road!
For round one we'll keep things simple: this'll be an open round. So I'm judging purely on how much I enjoy the song.
Send your submissions via PM. If the song is available on Spotify just let me know that it is and I'll check it out there. If you know it's not available on Spotify, either send me a youtube link or email me, genowyn (at) gmail (dot) com with an MP3/FLAC/Whatever.
-
Sent!
-
Also sent.
-
any length limit?

-
Sent a no-brainer.

-
any length limit?
Let's say 10 minutes, but there can be a bit of leeway.
-
Too late for me to join?
-
Probably... we've already got 10 participants and I'd like it to be an even number (for some reason). 10 songs is already sorta a lot to be giving proper consideration to in a timely manner as well. Sorry man.
-
yeah i'd never run a roulette with more than 10 people, sacul is absolutely nuts for having 15
-
Well considering my weird, hard-to-please tastes, I think this way I find better stuff - with my last roulette, I think I only checked like 20-30 out of all the albums I got, and ended up loving 3 or 4, so now statistics are on my side :P
-
Oh well. I'm kind of busy anyway so I was thinking about sitting the next one out anyway. Have fun!
-
I believe I am only waiting on Stadler's submission. I'd sorta like to have them all in before I start listening but either way I will do my first listens later tonight.
-
Maybe he forgot he signed up, have you pmed him?
-
My bad; I went offline this weekend. Submission sent, won't happen again!!!!!!!
-
No worries.
I've received all the submissions now and i'll be giving them all a few listens before I score.
-
I've listened to all of the songs twice now, want to give them one more listen before I give scores.
That said it's been a good opening round. A lot of variety and already one band I will need to check out more from.
-
Awesome. Hope it's the one I sent :tup :corn
-
Awesome. Hope it's the one I sent :tup :corn
Unwritten rule: If there's one standout it's probably seneca's. That said, I like to think it's mine, but there's not really a lot to check out since they only have 1 album :lol
-

Lol I'll take note of that.
Wait... One album and an EP?
-
No, just an album! If you're talking about the band I think you are, I just heard that album this week for the first time and I don't like sending something that someone else has sent me, feels dirty. That person is also in this roulette so that makes it even worse :lol
It's an amazing album though, if it got sent I'm happy, because everyone needs to hear it.
-
:lol It might be, but it's a band I've known about for a while. I'm so curious to see what everyone sent :lol
-
I hope you didn't send one of my typical submissions or I'll stab you. Or give a 2 in my roulette :P
-
Hmm, I have no idea what your typical submissions are. And I'm gonna stay out of your roulettes for a while. I've read the list of bands and the stuff about your taste/preferences and I don't think I'd have enough music in my library to participate yet :lol
-
I hope you didn't send one of my typical submissions or I'll stab you. Or give a 2 in my roulette :P
s0nt s0me dj0nt
-

Yeah having a small library sucks, but you can always host a roulette to fix that :P
-
Well, not necessarily small, just not really much stuff I feel would appeal to your taste that isn't already on your banned list. And I definitely will, but I actually have way to many bands to check out right now. I have something like 125+ bands that I know I already like, who's discographies I want to go through before I ask people to send me more. :lol That should last me little
Who knows, maybe next time you do a roulette I'll give it a shot.
-
I just don't have the background to put too much into guessing what someone else would like or not like. I'm just going with songs/bands I find interesting, that aren't clearly banned, that maybe don't get talked about much here, or that have an image that isn't necessarily accurate in relation to the material. I have no illusions that mine is "the one", but hopefully I'll get at least one "sonovabitch, I didn't realize that was THEM!".
EDIT: Oh, and going for "timely". :)
-
Yeah, at first I tried going through Genowyn's profile to see all the music related posts, but it took way too long to find any, and the last.fm is apparently not representative. So I just picked something I liked and hoped would go over well.
-
Working on write-ups right now, should be up soon.
I didn't want to give the impression that my last.fm is totally useless, it's just what I was listening to three years ago :lol. A lot of that stuff I still listen to, just some of the stuff I've gotten into *since* then isn't there. And, unfortunately, my Spotify still doesn't seem to be scrobbling even after I set it to...

Round One Results
Just before we get started on results I wanted to give a little legend on what each rating means to me:
5 - Really enjoyed the song. Perhaps the song is just as good as a song ranked 4, but this had some kind of X factor. Will check the band out further for sure.
4 - Great song. Perhaps just as good as a 5 but lacking that X factor. Might check it out further if I feel like it.
3 - Good song. A song I enjoyed listening to but nothing to write home about.
2 - Not my style. Just not the kind of song I'm into. Probably really good at what it's trying to be, but what it's trying to be is not something I like.
1 - What the fuck am I listening to?
With that, here we go:
5 - Thank You Scientist - My Famed Disappearing Act - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Ohh boy I wasn't expecting to get something I liked this much right off the bat. When the song started I thought I was in for some typical technical metal stuff, but I got a pleasant surprise. There are some definite Coheed and Cambria influences here, which is not that surprising seeing as the band is signed to Evil Ink. This was so cool. Already started checking out their other work.
4 - Native Construct - Mute - Train of Naught
Again I'll mention I expected a typical Prog Metal tune here but was presently surprised. A really interesting blend of styles that I dig, but not quite as cohesive as I normally like. Still, good song.
4 - David Maxim Micic - Where is Now? - Sacul
Once more a pleasant surprise. This song really takes you on a journey, and an enjoyable one. It was surprising to hear scatting in a metal song (assuming that was scatting and not a language I'm not familiar with that happens to sound exactly like scatting), but pretty cool.
4 - Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar - Senecadawg2
I have a strange relationship with post rock. I almost always enjoy it when I hear it, but it's never been something I really want to go out of my way to hear. Ultimately it's the same with this track. Enjoyable, mellow, pretty, but not necessarily something I'm going to look into further.
4 - Streetlight Manifesto - The Three of Us - Ultimetalhead
This was cool. Is this ska? I don't know. Definitely a cool song, quite enjoyable to listen to. Not sure what else to say.
3 - The Smiths - A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours - Shadow Ninja 2.0
I've never really heard the Smiths before and this was an interesting introduction. I found the instrumental portion sort of underwhelming but the vocal performance was cool.
3 - Oceansize - Dead Dogs An' All Sorts - Parama
This was a nice little song but it leaves me feeling sort of unsatisfied. It gives the impression of being the intro song to something bigger, and I wish whatever that was was a part of it. Still, this part is enjoyable enough on its own.
3 - Thrice - The Whaler - Scorpion
I'm familiar with a few Thrice songs (specifically Daedalus, which Scorpion originally tried to send in...would have been a 5 if I wasn't familiar with it, and The Artist in the Ambulance) but that's about it. This song was pretty cool but not really inspiring me to check out the rest of their catalogue.
2 - Mahavishnu Orchestra - Meeting of the Spirits - Fluffy Lothario
Alright, so, definitely some impressive instrumentation going on here. The people playing this music are clearly talented. That being said, nothing about this song really grabbed me, even on repeated listens. This sorta stuff just really isn't my style.
2 - Angels and Airwaves - Secret Crowds - Stadler
I am hesitant to use the word emo as a genre, especially because of the negative connotations. Instead I will use the term pop-punk. I'm not really into pop-punk in general unless there's something about it that sets it apart for me. This didn't really have that. The instrumental portions were good, but I just really, really abhor this style of vocals.
Standings:
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 5
Train of Naught - 4
Sacul - 4
Senecadawg2 - 4
Ultimetalhead - 4
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 3
Parama - 3
Scorpion - 3
Fluffy Lothario - 2
Stadler - 2
The theme for round 2 will be: Female vocalists. I did a similar round last time and was quite happy with the results. I'll prefer songs with only a female singer, but songs with two singers, one being male, are fine too.
Note: I also moved the banlist to the OP and added a few bands to it.
-
oh man i was going to send you that TYS song next , RIP 5 points :lol
...not that i actually could since it's female vocalists this round
also you are correct in that Dead Dogs An' All Sorts is part of a suite, but i actually find As the Smoke Clears to be the absolute weakest track on the EP it's from (still great though)
-
Yea, that was exactly the song I expected you had sent and the one I was talking about, Walrus :lol well deserved 5 points, gave it a 9.5/10 in my roulette but it was nearing a perfect score.
Mute is about the best balance you get off this album between cohesive and interesting, the more interesting the songs get, the tougher they are to digest, I made the mistake of sending their closing epic in Tom Bombabil's roulette and it's just way too whacky to appreciate in a few listens, if at all. But I'm glad you liked it :metal
I'm terrible when it comes to female vocalists but I'll think of something. What's your take on electronic music?
...not that i actually could since it's female vocalists this round
You'd be surprised, friend of mine thought it was a female singer.
-
I'm fucked.
I put the song in because it WASN'T "pop-punk" or "emo", at least compared to his other band. The double set "Love" is almost... proggy in a way that Green Day (which IS pop-punk) strives for.
Ah well. This round will be better; I have two choices, I just have to decide which one...
-
I'm terrible when it comes to female vocalists but I'll think of something. What's your take on electronic music?
Depends. I like Pendulum a lot and some dubstep is cool.
-
i might do a bad thing and send a single off an album that's not even out yet because i've listened to it like 5 times and i'm super hyped for the album :lol
edit: goddammit they released another single last week now i have to listen to it and pick between the two :lol
-

-
You started this thread less than a week ago and already have round one results up? I like!! :tup :tup
Glad you enjoyed Sigur Ros a bit, at least. I was mainly just trying to get a pulse on your tastes vis-a-vis post-rock.
I'll send soon
-
Sent some female shit.
-
Sorry Parama :lol. I figured that was one of the top things I wanted to send, and something that was likely to be sent by other people because we had been talking about it elsewhere.
Glad you liked it that much, Genowyn :tup
Anyways, I really don't know much of anything which has female vocals because I tend to actually dislike them. But I've got a few things I suppose I could send. I guess I'll listen to some stuff again and decide what to send shortly. Btw, are only bands in the banned list banned, or are the ones who've previously had a song sent in this roulette also banned?
-
You liking Where is Now? tells me a lot about your tastes, and I think I'll do well on this roulette :P
-
someone else send lorde this round so i don't have to, you'll probably get high points anyways
-
I'm on it, sent Buzzcut Season :neverusethis:
-
Sent. It was a tough pick between Babymetal and Selena Gomez :\
-
For the record I did NOT send Demi Lovato. Although I don't think my score could be any lower if I did. :)
-
sending this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLFSVBO9WOE) :neverusethis:
-
Boy, I sure wonder what Sacul will be sending this round :justjen

-
I was about to send some polka, how mean of you
Well, more like electro-polka (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVNqTBF5Zyo), but whatever.
Sent some dj0nt.
-
God dammit I just realized I missed an opportunity to send Yoko Ono
-
uuhhh i hope everyone has their songs in :lol
-
Oh, right. I'm pretty pumped for this one. Native Construct was a pretty safe entry but this one will be much riskier.
-
I'm pretty sure my entry is gonna completely negate my early lead
-
Yeah sorry for no update, all the songs are in but I've been sick so I haven't really had a chance to listen yet. Will start today.
-
Hope you feel better...
-
Yeah no sweat. Judging from your first round you're pretty damn quick, so it shouldn't be a problem to be on time, especially after the dreadfully dragged out string of roulettes that was Bizkit, Tom and me. Get well
-
Just an update I have given a first listen to the songs...some changes at work are messing with my schedule though so expect results no later than Sunday! Sorry for the delay.
-
:(
-
:'(
-
Genowyn, remember
bug to keep us updated!
-
Sorry guys I'll post when I get home from work tonight.
-
Lol work. Get your priorities straight :P
-
Sorry for the late update and terse commentaries, everyone. I'll do better next time :sadpanda:
4 - Feint - Snake Eyes (feat. CoMa) - Train of Naught
This was a cool song. It's got sort of a Pendulum feel to it which I really enjoyed. Good stuff.
4 - Florence + The Machine - Between Two Lungs - Fluffy Lothario
This was a pretty cool song. I really liked her voice. Not sure what else to say.
4 - Destiny Potato - Love Song - Sacul
Yeah this was pretty cool. Apparently a song you send in a lot based on comments? I guess I see why.
4 - Portishead - Glory Box - Scorpion
Pretty cool. Pretty chill. I liked it. Yep.
3 - Beach House - Myth - Shadow Ninja 2.0
Interesting tune. Really mellow but didn't really grab my attention, felt the same about it on repeated listens.
3 - Heart - Wait for an Answer - Stadler
I've heard Heart before and generally really enjoyed it... songs like Crazy On You, Barracuda, Heartless, any of these probably would have gotten a 4 from me (though obviously would have been rejected as I'm familiar with them). This song was... very different. Very 80s. Not my favorite thing from them, but it was alright.
3 - Susanne Sundfor - Kamikaze - Senecadawg2
It irks me when people mispronounce Japanese words. It's not hard to pronounce. Other than that a pretty enjoyable song.
3 - Tricot - Pool - UltiMetalHead
Dammit UMH. As I was pulling this song up in my Spotify I realized the band was Japanese. I was excited. You described it as Math Rock, and I, maybe incorrectly, expected something... frenetic. I am tempted to take another point away for disappointing me with a Japanese song but I'll let it slide.
3 - Oceans of Slumber - Winter - Parama
This was definitely middling for me. Didn't really manage to click with me, unfortunately.
2 - Mostly Autumn - First Day at School - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Hmm, this song didn't really do it for me. Honestly even after a few listens I can't really recall anything about this song. Sorry.
Standings:
Train of Naught - 8
Sacul - 8
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 7
Senecadawg2 - 7
Ultimetalhead - 7
Scorpion - 7
Parama - 6
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 6
Fluffy Lothario - 6
Stadler - 5
The theme for round 3 is HEAVY. Heavy can mean a lot of things. So this doesn't necessarily mean downtuned distorted guitars, though that's certainly fine.
-
I kinda wish I knew why it didn't do much for you but oh well :lol
i can definitely do heavy
believe i should have 6 points instead of 7 tho
-
You are correct.
-
Awesome, great you liked it! There isn't much to go on about from here though, most of Feint's stuff is kinda generic, this just popped out to me as I really have next to no female vocals music in my library.
Heavy songs serve me well though, I'll send tomorrow.
-
Sent
-
Great choice with Glory Box, Scorp :tup
And yeah, I tend to send that song on roulettes :lol
-
Did I miss something about you not digging Japanese music?
-
Did I miss something about you not digging Japanese music?
No, I
I like Japanese music but I didn't like that song
So like, I was crestfallen
-
Sent some :metal
-
Sent something.
-
I've got to think a little on the "heavy".
But for the record, I took a chance on the "Heart" song for one reason and one reason only: the topic was "female singer" and on that particular song, Ann sings her TITS off. I've heard that song 100 times if I've heard it once, and that end part, when she is singing "Where are you? How are you?" and especially the plaintive "I'll hold on!"... gives me chills; makes the hair on my arm stand up to this day.
-
I knew I should have sent Yoko Ono. Honestly I was hoping for a 3 at best, so not surprised. Didn't realltreally anything for me either, I just sent it because I don't like female vocals and couldn't think anything lol.
I'll think of something heavy today and hopefully send it tonight, if not tomorrow.
-
Great choice with Glory Box, Scorp :tup
This guy knows what's up.
Sent, btw.
If UMH didn't cockblock me, that is.
-
Oh crap forgot about the theme, will resend soon
-
Sent
-
Sent some drum & bass industrial metal :P
-
i hope everyone has sent by now
-
I apparently did, based on my post earlier in the thread. Hopefully it was something good. Don't let me down, Past Shadow Ninja.
-
Did I miss something about you not digging Japanese music?
No, I
I like Japanese music but I didn't like that song
So like, I was crestfallen
Oh. Bummer. I really like tricot quite a bit. The drums are out of control.
Great choice with Glory Box, Scorp :tup
This guy knows what's up.
Sent, btw.
If UMH didn't cockblock me, that is.
Considering the thousands of bands I listen to that I would describe as "heavy" I feel the odds of us sending the same song would be rather slim. :lol
-
Well, yes, but... Japanese and heavy really only leads to one logical conclusion. One which I happen to know that you are a fanboy of as well.
Which Genowyn already knew, so I had to switch, but that's beside the point.
-
Boris? :P
-
Alright, maybe not just one logical conclusion.
But Dir en grey is not exactly far-fetched, you have to admit.
-
Babymetal. Melt-Banana? Midori tho.
-
is babymetal something people actually like bcuz i only ever see them mentioned ironically
-
Like vaporwave? :P
-
Babymetal. Melt-Banana? Midori tho.
Oh god Midori fucking rules so hard.
But no yeah Geno and I have talked about Deg before so that one's obviously off limits. My terror at disappointing him with Japanese music has pretty much killed my drive to send him anything else from the far east. We went to Scandanavia this time.
-
I've done Australia, UK and US, not quite as exciting I guess.
Is everyone in?
-
Oh yeah they've all been in for a while. Expect results Monday probably.
This is the first time all the songs are not on Spotify which sorta messes with my flow XD
-

Ugh I can relate to it, and totally hate it when it happens >:(

sending some funk for round 4
-
Round 4 Theme: Send some funky black metal
-
Cool I've been looking to get into more In Living Color...
:neverusethis:
-
So when can we expect results? :P
-
Expect results Monday probably.
-
-
Sacul I know which song is yours, and it's awesome. I saw him live once :metal
-
Then you're lucky :metal
-
5 - Zardonic - Antihero - Sacul
Daaaamnn I enjoyed this. Reminded me of Pendulum, which is great, and some of the riffs had a Dream Theater feel to them, which was cool. Unfortunately I'm bad at talking about exactly why I like or dislike music so I don't know what else to say.
4 - Karnivool - Set Fire to the Hive - Train of Naught
Definitely a rockin' tune. Really enjoyed the vocal lines in the chorus. As usual I can't really think of too much to say, besides that I enjoyed it.
4 - Unexpect - Unfed Pendulum - Scorpion
Fun tune. I've heard some Unexpect before but never really got into them much. One thing that stood out to me in this song was the way they were saying Pendulum... I suppose they are Quebecois so I can't fault them.
4 - Jacques Brel - La Ville S'Endormait - Fluffy Lothario
Fluffy was really the only one who took the alternative mmaning of heavy, and went for it hard. This song was incredibly dark, haunting, but a great listen. Interesting to hear some of his pronunciation was different from the French I learned in school.
4 - Periphery - Stranger Things - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Great tune. This is my kind of heavy riff. Great to headbang to.
3 - Black Sabbath - Psychophobia - Stadler
Man... the vocalist really kills this song for me. I enjoy the instrumentals just fine but I can't stand the vocals. Give me this song with Dio andyou'd have a definite four and maybe a five, but...
3 - The Ocean - The Grand Inquisitor II: Roots & Locusts - Shadow Ninja 2.0
Cool tune. Really heavy. I wasn't that into it initially, but it grew on me with repeated listens.
2 - Intronaut - Digital Gerrymandering - Parama
Unfortunately this song didn't really leave much of an impression on me. Even after a few listens I have trouble recalling this song, but after pulling it up another time for this writing I think the reason for that is that I'm not really into it. In particular, I didn't really enjoy the main riff.
2 - Edge of Sanity - Twilight - Ultimetalhead
Ech. Really didn't dig this. Sorta had an early-era Opeth feel, to me, and that is unfortunately NOT a good thing. Just reaalllly not my style.
1 - Deafheaven - Brought to the Water - Senecadawg2
Oooh every extreme metal trope I don't enjoy together in one song. Did not like the vocal performance at all and the instrumental part I liked maybe even less. Really did not enjoy this song at all.
Standings:
Sacul - 13
Train of Naught - 12
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 11
Scorpion - 11
Fluffy Lothario - 10
Ultimetalhead - 9
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 9
Senecadawg2 - 8
Parama - 8
Stadler - 8
The new theme is "Chill". Just a great song to relax to. I don't smoke anymore, but a song you could listen to in the dark while high and go on a journey.
Also for your benefit I now want to give some examples of songs I might give a five to in themed rounds, so for this time some examples would be Devin Townsend's Deep Peace or Skyhill's Run With the Hunted.
Also I'll let you know now, round 5 will be an open round, so you can start thinking about that too.
-
i have no clue what kind of music you like, it seems :lol
that's a great Karnivool track though
i almost sent a The Ocean track off of Pelagial but then didn't
-
Can't complain losing to Zardonic. :tup
I've got a great chill album but I'll think about it for a bit.
-
I went the alternate route of heavy because I feel there's little metal I could show the average DTFer that they hadn't already heard and would actually care for.
Interesting to hear some of his pronunciation was different from the French I learned in school.
I know nothing about French, but could this be because he was Belgian?
Those chill songs are nothing like what I was expecting, but I think I have an idea of something to send.
-
Those chill songs are nothing like what I was expecting
No kidding, especially the song titled "Deep Peace".
Sent!
-
Can I join this one, since I'm doing bad in any roulette I play in anyway :lol
-
Horrrrrrrrseshit. That song is better than any and all Opeth songs.
Chill. Hmmm, I'm very tempted to send another Japanese band but you've scared me with not liking tricot. Will think
-
sent
-
Hell yeah :metal
Those chill songs are nothing like what I was expecting
No kidding, especially the song titled "Deep Peace".
This :lol I'll just send some ambient I guess.
Can I join this one, since I'm doing bad in any roulette I play in anyway :lol
Oh come on, you're doing well in mine :P
-
Sent :tup
-
Strange that my definition of chill is apparently so different.
-
For reference, I think of that Portishead song you received on another round as "chill" :P
-
So do I, but Deep Peace is pretty chill too, I find.
Anyway, sent. You should totes check out that Unexpect album, it's actually their least whacky and most structured, so if you want to get into them, Fables would be a great starting point.
-
I can't wait forever.
I can't wait, I can't wait,
I can't wait anymore, Baby!
-
I set a bad precedent taking less than a week for round one :lol
It hasn't even been a week yet...
-
Oh, woops, didn't mean it like that man, the pace of the roulette is great.
Just wanted to throw in a nugget and keep the thread a bit relevant in case someone had forgot to send or something, since it made it to page 2.
-
I can't wait forever.
I can't wait, I can't wait,
I can't wait anymore, Baby!
So you're who sent that. I guess you got me back for sending thank you scientist :P
-
i should prob be looking on genowyn's last.fm
oh, hey, hi Eos :P
i still need that album though ugh
-
I can't wait forever.
I can't wait, I can't wait,
I can't wait anymore, Baby!
So you're who sent that. I guess you got me back for sending thank you scientist :P
Do you like them? Awesome.
I originally sent this song in Parama's roulette not thinking much about it but surprisingly he gave it a 9.5 so I started giving it more listens and I love the whole album now.
Also, I wonder who sent Buzzcut Season :neverusethis: great song though!
-
i'd still stand by that 9.5, probably my favorite on the album but it's a pretty solid album as a whole
-
Oh definitely. I;d probably give it a 9/10 myself though.
Sent Slash - World On Fire :neverusethis:
-
So it looks like my plays are Scrobbling from my phone now, so Last.fm should be more representative going forward.
-
oh, hey, hi Eos :P
i still need that album though ugh
Oh you do.
-
I can't wait forever.
I can't wait, I can't wait,

Yeah they're awesome. Going to see them with polyphia I'm Lawrence over spring break.
-
Just a heads up guys, due to the more... subtle nature of the songs this time I'm gonna need a bit more time to fairly judge them.
On the plus side I am on vacation next week so I should be able to get through the following round fairly quickly.
-
btw i sent buzzcut season what did you guys send
-
I thought that was pretty obvious after checking the last.fm :lol also pretty sure who sent Plini and who sent Ulver.
Mine is obviously the CHON song.
-
I have no clue what I sent. Was there a theme? Maybe that will help, brb
edit: Chill, apparently. Nope, doesn't help. Still no clue. Hope it was something good.
-
I have a clue, because one of the songs is something you sent me aswell in my roulette, you'll see.
-
I keep forgetting about the last.fm
I forgot basically everything that's happened in this roulette too it's been kinda slow :lol
-
I have a clue, because one of the songs is something you sent me aswell in my roulette, you'll see.
Oh yeah, I remember now. I think I probably sent that one in Sacul's roulette this last round as well. :lol
-
I keep forgetting about the last.fm

>.>
Sorry this round has taken a while guys, as I said before it's a bit harder to judge this time. Working on the results now.
-
5 - Ludovico Einaudi - Night - senecadawg2
Excellent. This is really the kind of thing I was hoping for this round. Musically different though they may be the tone and mood of this song really put me in the same mindset as the examples I gave. Really enjoyed it.
4 - Lorde - Buzzcut Season - Parama
I'll admit I was a little surprised to see the choice of artist, and somewhat apprehensive, too. Pop music is not usually something I go in for. However I was pleasantly surprised by this song, definitely an enjoyable listen.
4 - Silverchair - Across the Night - Fluffy Lothario
This was a cool tune, very mellow in terms of instrumentation and I enjoyed the vocals as well... as usual not a lot to say.
4 - Massive Attack - Angel - Scorpion
So probably like a lot of people I am familiar with Massive Attack through the theme song for House. I got a similar vibe in some respects from this song, though it is quite distinct as well. Definitely an enjoyable experience and an example of what I consider 'chill' that maybe doesn't jive with the normal point of view... that slowly building intensity works for me.
4 - Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride - Stadler
The only Mountain song I had heard prior to this was Mississippi Queen, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. This one definitely went in more of a 70s stoner interpretation of chill, I thought, but that still works for me. Quite enjoyable.
3 - CHON - Can't Wait - Train of Naught
Based on your comments I think maybe mentioning Deep Peace threw you off a little. Was not at all expecting the kind of technical shreddy stuff that came into this song really early... It works for me in Deep Peace because it has so long to build up to it, I guess? I'm not sure. Had its moments but not exactly what I was looking for, theme wise.
3 - Plini - Opening - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Not too surprising since you tried to send in the same song as Train of Naught that I have roughly the same reaction to it. More shreddy and technical than I was really hoping for this round, but otherwise a pretty solid track.
3 - Ulver - EOS - Sacul
So in sort of a 360 from the previous two entries, this song definitely nailed it in terms of the theme, but left me a little dissatisfied in terms of the song itself. Certainly chill, but ultimately not a song I was all that into, likely would have fared worse if it was sent in on a round that wasn't themed.
3 - Bright Eyes - Nothing Gets Crossed Out - Ultimetalhead
Unfortunately we get sort of the same result as Sacul's entry, here, in that it definitely nailed it in terms of being chill, but wasn't really my style when it came to the song itself. In particular I guess I wasn't really thrilled with the vocal performance.
2 - Sleep Party People - Change in Time - Shadow Ninja 2.0
This song didn't really do it for me, unfortunately. The strange instrumentation and vocal style sort of put me off balance in a way that doesn't make me feel 'chill'.
Standings:
Sacul - 16
Train of Naught - 15
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 14
Scorpion - 15
Fluffy Lothario - 14
Ultimetalhead - 13
Senecadawg2 - 13
Parama - 12
Stadler - 12
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 11
So, as mentioned before the theme for round 5 is open! Based on how I've reacted to your choices so far, and the fact that my last.fm should now be reflecting what I have been listening to, hopefully you'll have something great to share!
As a side note, I should have mentioned this earlier but please, if you are sending me a Youtube link because you're not sure if the song is available on Spotify, please include the name of the artist and song so I can look it up on Spotify without having to go to Youtube first.
-
EOS deserves a higher score :P
Although I'd have sent Teardrop, that's an excellent song, Scorp :tup
-
ahh nice a 4
so far Tom is the only one I haven't gotten to like buzzcut season
-
Finally I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" EOS, what's so amazing about it anyway? It's chill as fuck and a bit trippy but I don't get anything else out of it.
I guess I got carried away with the CHON song a bit, it's a very unusual type of "relaxing" music, but it wors for me so what the hell, and I'm still in second place so I'll try to nail the open round. Will send tomorrow.
-
Finally I'm not the only one who doesn't "get" EOS, what's so amazing about it anyway? It's chill as fuck and a bit trippy but I don't get anything else out of it.
The atmosphere is fantastic, but what I love most is the emotion - it's quite a moving piece, and gives me chills every time I listen to it.
-
Well, I'll take a 3. I suppose it wasn't the "chill" you wanted, I just sent it because that's the vibe I get. I guess more of the mood is very relaxed to me. Idk. I'll send my song tonight or in the morning.
-

Fair enough, I'm planning on giving it another try anyways because it sounds fantastic the way people describe it.

Same here with my song (apparently from reading the writeups you originally sent the same CHON song?), but I'll take the 3, it's still solid.
Sent some :metal I actually really liked the themed rounds because we had our music narrowed down a bit to make it easier to pick, since I don't know you all that well. I just end up sending prog metal in all the open rounds :lol
-
Is there a time limit on our submissions? I wanna send something by a certain artist, but most of their great stuff is in the 8-12 minute range, at least.
Oh, and is something from a live album okay?
-

Less of a limit than a guideline but I don't really want anything much longer than ten minutes?
As far as live, that's risky. For one I want to be able to find it on Spotify for ease of listening, secondly, production really impacts my enjoyment of a song. So if that is one damn clear and clean live recording that I can find on Spotify, great.

Yeah, I did. I actually prefer the open rounds, but I can see where you're coming from. It's just that I have stuff that I really want to send, and usually the themes restrict me form sending the the stuff I want to most.
-
yeah, whenever it is i do my second roulette i'm probably going to have themed rounds but make adhering to the theme only like worth a half point, so if you wanted to choose between a 7.5 song fitting the theme and a 9.5 song not fitting the theme the choice would be pretty easy
-
I like that idea, parama. It would add some interesting strategy.
-

Eh, that's fine then.
-
Sent something insane, given that Unexpect actually went fairly well.
-
I don't remember what the hell I sent :lol
-
Sent....
-
I sent eotw
-
I don't remember what the hell I sent :lol
shadow ninja??!?!
-
I normally remember what I send but... oh I do now lel. Sent some prog metal :metal
-
Any updates on how you're liking the submissions this round?
-
oh yeah, this roulette exists :lol
-
Oh hai
-
You started this thread less than a week ago and already have round one results up? I like!!
-
Well, what'd everyone send?
I sent some TesseracT
-
It's up for others to decide whether they want to throw it out there, but there's atleast 3 very predictable ones when looking at the last.fm. You haven't been around for very long, but I knew exactly who had sent the TesseracT song :lol
-

:lol :lol yeah I didn't know if most people usually cared to mention what song, but I don't mind so I figured I'd do something to try to keep this thread going even just a bit. And yep, I love me some TesseracT
-
I wonder if you can guess what I sent :neverusethis:
-
Sorry guys results should be up later today
-
and then everyone will know that i sent east of the wall :tup
-
I wonder what Parama sent
-

I don't really mind it, and we will find out today anyways, Circus Maximus is mine.
-
Nice. I love Circus Maximus.
-
Gah really sorry guys gonna have to delay the update until tomorrow afternoon.
In the meantime I will let you start thinking on the next theme: Epic
Now, epic can mean a lot of things depending on who you are. In terms if musical, it's generally going to refer to length or some quality of the music itself. An argument could be made to it applying to lyrical content, too (I guess).
So I don't necessarily want 20 minute songs, but those are being accepted for this round. Anything like 7:30+ will probably do in terms of length, though the songs don't necessarily require an epic length if they are musically epic (though both is ideal). As far as an upper limit, I don't want to put any hard limits on, but consider how many delays I have been having with normal length songs :p. Light of Day, Day of Darkness or its ilk may be a bad choice here.
Some example songs that I'm sure will just confuse people, but would get 5 points in this round:
Etsuko Yakushimaru - Nornir
Dir en grey - Vinushka
Don't send in anything just yet, but you can feel free to start thinking about your pick.
-
Would Devin Townsend's Truth qualify as epic?
-
Sure, sorta.
-
Nice, will send tomorrow. Can I submit something from a band that was already sent? :P
-
Already happened a few times, so I guess so.
FWIW some Devin songs that would score higher as Epic for me would include Kingdom (Epicloud ver.), Grace, Color Your World, Earth Day, War...
-
Some of Devin's most popular songs I don't really care for, nice :lol
Sent.
-
he said not to send yet :lol
-
Oh crap :lol
Let me know if I'll have to resend.
-
you won't let me send early in your roulette yet you try to jump the gun in another roulette... ::)
-
I got hyped to send soon that I forgot it wasn't allowed yet :'(
-
I'm pumped for this. So we can send as soon as you post results?
-
Wait, bands that were already sent aren't banned? It's time for Chromatic Aberration :footloose:
-
I have some ideas. Really having to try not to go over 12-14 minutes though.
-
5 - Star Fucking Hipsters - Two Cups of Tea - Ultimetalhead
Don't really know why as it's not really what I would typically call 'my style' but this song waS fuckin' awesome. Enjoyed quite a bit.
5 - Diablo Swing Orchestra - Black Box Messiah - Shadow Ninja 2.0
What? Two 5s in one round? You see it right. This song was damn cool. I'll definitely need to check out this band further.
4 - Circus Maximus - Architect of Fortune - Train of Naught
Cool tune. I listened to their debut a few times when it was newish and enjoyed it, this song was in a similar vein but wearing the DT influence a little less on their sleeve. Definitely enjoyable.
4 - Dog Fashion Disco - Silent Film - Scorpion
Interesting song for sure. I think I heard a bit from this band back in the days of peer to peer filesharing, got some song from them mislabelled as System of a Down and really liked it. This song appears to have moved on quite a bit from that style, but still a good time.
4 - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - A simple Game of Genius - Stadler
This song definitely reminded me of Oasis, but that's not really surprising, or a bad thing. It certainly had a distinctiveness to it as well. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
3 - Riverside - Hyperactive - Sacul
Hmm... ultimately this song really didn't grab me, even on multiple listens. It was an okay song for sure, but I didn't get much of a "This sure is a special song" feeling from it? I don't know.
3 - East of the Wall - Fractal Canopy - Parama
A cool song but it didn't really click with me. Not sure what else to say.
3 - Tesseract - Of Matter - Proxy - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Not really what I expected based on what I know of Tesseract, but a pretty okay tune. I was surprised by the way it ended. Reminds me of how Pull Me Under ends - or is there just something wrong with my copy of Images and Words?
3 - Max Richter - Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons Spring - senecadawg2
Wasn't really expecting to get any classical music... while this was nice, it didn't really come across as anything particularly special to me? Might just be because I'm not that familiar with Vivaldi. More of a Beethoven guy.
2 - Ryan Adams - La Cienega Just Smiled - Fluffy Lothario
Just really not my style. Sorry man. Not sure what else to say.
Standings:
Sacul - 19
Train of Naught - 19
Scorpion - 19
Ultimetalhead - 18
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 17
Fluffy Lothario - 16
Senecadawg2 - 16
Stadler - 16
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 16
Parama - 15
Still quite a close race with quite a few rounds to go. Still anyone's game!
I'll reiterate the theme for the next round in case anyone is just checking the thread now:
Epic
Now, epic can mean a lot of things depending on who you are. In terms if musical, it's generally going to refer to length or some quality of the music itself. An argument could be made to it applying to lyrical content, too (I guess).

Don't send in anything just yet, but you can feel free to start thinking about your pick.
I will also reiterate PLEASE INCLUDE THE NAME AND ARTIST OF YOUR SONG IN YOUR PM! It's fine if you want to send a youtube link so I can see a video or something, but for ease of running this thing I need the names and stuff in the PM. Please do this going forward!
-
powerful 3's
-
At least I'm still on the lead tied with ToN :P
-
I'm going to be disappointed if I don't get a 5 with this one, so I won't
-
Sent already. Been refreshing every 10 minutes all day just to be sure I could send my selection first :lol
I'm a little surprised that the TesseracT song got a 3, but I do think the ending detracts a bit.
-
well I already sent so :P
I think what I sent is obvious tho
-
Mind saying what you sent?
Also, I should have 17 points, not 19.
-
forget not
-
At least I'm still on the lead tied with ToN :P
I think Scorpion is tied with us too, tight race. But if I think you're going to send what you're going to send I'm afraid you'll take back the lead.
I have yet to get a 5, just been very consistent. I think it's all been 4's, maybe one 3. I too am going to send ASAP to try and not get cockblocked, though I only see one other person in this competition potentially sending the same thing, this pretty popular song doesn't get enough love around here.
-
forget not
Damn, that's a good one. I sent Visions - Haken
-
is haken legit not banned
And
Why not celestial elixir instead :P
-
Or why not Cockroach King? :2metal:
Sent.
-
What I originally intended for this round is banned so I'm going for an alternate way.
Sent Being Human :P .
EDIT: Great DSO song, Shadow Ninja :tup
-
is haken legit not banned
And
Why not celestial elixir instead :P
I like Celestial Elixir and Visions about equally, but since they aren't banned I sort of assumed that Genowyn had no previous Haken experience. IMO Ross's voice is more accessible on Visions, as well as the style (if that makes sense). I also think Visions is more coherent as an epic even though that doesn't seem to be the general consensus.
Or why not Cockroach King? :2metal:
Controversial opinion: Cockroach king is the worst song on any Haken album/EP except for Aquarius :corn
-
literally everything in your post is wrong :lol
-
Maybe expect for "IMO" and "that doesn't seem to be the general consensus". :rollin
-
even those are wrong :loser:
-
What makes you prefer Celestial Elixir?
-
it's a rare example of a 15+ minute track feeling like one stretched out shorter song yet having the qualityear and creatidily to keep itself interesting the whole way through. Also, the chorus is literally perfect
-
I do concede that the chorus is absolute perfection.
-
Celestial Elixir is a mess :P
-
Well, that didn't go down so well, lol.
Will probably send some Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
-
Celestial Elixir is a mess :P
Just like your roulette :P :P :P
-
Just like your round 9 submission :P :P :P
Fixed :P
-
if you mean my round 9 submission
yes, sure, ok
-
YESYESYESYESYESYES
Seriously stoked you liked it that much. It's absurdly catchy and it's been stuck in my head for weeks.
-
Sent
-
I forgot to mention, I was soooooo close to sending Save Me by Avenged Sevenfold :lol :lol
-
I forgot to mention, I was soooooo close to sending Save Me by Avenged Sevenfold :lol :lol
There's another band to add to the banned list I guess?
And oh that would have scored big.
-
Kind of upset I didn't send it now, just from a selfish gimmie points standpoint. The only reason I didn't is because I was worried about the stigma associated with A7x. IMO it's easily the best song they've ever recorded. I'm assuming you would've made me submit again though.
-
I was about to send Blackbird but you're already familiar with it :mehlin
-

'Course
-
Welp, A Farewell To Arms was rejected, came to this thread only to find out Save Me has been aswell  I'm screwed, gonna look for something else.
-
i'm sorry for your loss
-
Don't worry about me I'll be fine.
Re-sent. First time I've sent something from one of my roulette participants :corn
-
Sent.
EDIT: Going through the thread, it appears that I will be sharing bands with someone. Oh well, there are worse bands that could be shared, I guess.
-
did you send celestial elixir
-
Nope, And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope for me.
-
I had to look up which one that was :lol
The only thing I ever remember about that one is the intro
-
Is it just me or did someone send me a song such that the title of the song, if translated to Latin, is the name of the band?
-
yes. yes i did.
-
Neat.
Also someone sent me a song via email but their email address does not correspond to a username and they did not say who they were? So I am still waiting on one sub I think but I have no idea whose.
-
Hey did I put the artist/song title information in my PM? I can't remember.
Also, uh, did I send a song? edit: apparently I did judging by my earlier post in the thread.
-
Yep everyone has kindly formatted their PMs in a way that's helpful (except for that person who emailed me)
Also I was mistaken, I have all the subs, so I know who the person who sent me an email was...
-
Is it just me or did someone send me a song such that the title of the song, if translated to Latin, is the name of the band?
Well, that confirms it, forget not.
If Shadow Ninja sent Devil Doll (Mr Doctor) all three of the 10/10 songs in my epic round will be in :tup
-
Mind saying what you sent?
forget not
good job, train :tup
-
I'm smart
-
This is a humbling experience. One, I've won trivia contests in like five states based on my musical knowledge, and I recognize maybe half the bands mentioned here. Two, all this about "I know what so-and-so sent" and "I've sent the same band as so-and-so" is stunning, because I can barely remember what I sent, let alone being able to guess what someone else sent.
Hahahaha!
-
Once you've played in a couple dozen of these things, it's rare to see songs you don't recognize. Some people even start submitting each other's songs--it's an incestuous circle jerk.
Wow--I sound bitter about this, I really ought to take a break, lol.
-
tbh i try to mix things up a little bit but there are also "those" songs that are kind of worth showing to everyone
i've actually managed to avoid sending songs or artists people sent me in my roulette thus far though
-
You'll notice some of us always end up sending the same stuff :lol
-
You'll notice some of us always end up sending the same stuff :lol
david maxim micic - where is now?
-
There are very few roulettes in which I haven't send it :P
-
Basically what seneca said.
I'm starting to notice a couple of songs that I wish to keep sending whenever I get the chance, but overall I really try to be as original as possible. I think I've only sent one song in this roulette that I have sent before (in the female vocals round), Snake Eyes by Feint, though I don't remember who I sent it to. Oh and Architect of Fortune is also a repeat, nevermind.
-
aside from buzzcut season and this round, all the other songs i sent i haven't sent before
i sent a lot more repeat songs in sacul's roulette though but one of them was a song that had scored way low in the last two roulettes i'd sent it in so :lol
-
Once you've played in a couple dozen of these things, it's rare to see songs you don't recognize.
I've watched these threads for years, and played in a few. In the average round, I would recognise at most half the bands sent. Often, it's far less than that.
-
Damn. Just randomly stumbled upon that Diablo Swing Orchestra song that got 5 points in this roulette, it's awesome. Basically the kind of music I've been looking for lately, don't know how I missed it as they get mentioned fairly often around here.
-
heyo what up homies
-
Hey Parama!
Why you gotta go and bump a dead horse?
-
Hey Parama!
Why you gotta go and bump a dead horse?
because the horse isn't dead, it just needs motivation
-
I just want to know if I still have chances of winning this :sadpanda:
-
Don't mind me, just saving this thread from the second page...... again. What's going on dude? No harm in delaying things a bit when necessary (though it does start to take its toll now), but if you're going to, at least update us on the situation or something.
A lot of people (including me) are desperately trying to keep the thread alive with discussions about our songs and stuff. You probably have more important things going on and I don't want to come across as a jerk, but the participants seem to care more about the roulette than you.
-
And not to be rude, but 6 rounds in 2 months is reeeeally slow.
-
Sorry for the delay.
Have had some medical issues going on, and it's harder to find a block of open time to listen to all the longer songs.
-
5 - Star Fucking Hipsters - Two Cups of Tea - Ultimetalhead
Don't really know why as it's not really what I would typically call 'my style' but this song waS fuckin' awesome. Enjoyed quite a bit.
Just browsing through here and nicely surprised to find this gem on here. I LOVE Star Fucking Hipsters (along with STZA's other stuff, Leftover Crack and Choking Victim). If you like this I'd personally recommend their last album From the Dumpster to the Grave, it is chock full of their catchiest stuff to date IMO. So happy to see them on here and that you liked them. If you do another roulette I'll be all over it.
-
at this point I'm just hoping for results period, with anything over a 3 being a bonus :lol
-
Hopefully I will have results tomorrow or Wednesday.
Regarding results I will say so far there is a one and a five.
You can also all start thinking about the next theme which is 'fun'.
Example songs could be Devin Townsend's "Bad Devil", The Dear Hunter's "King of Swords (Reversed)"
-
heck yeah, a 1
-
It's not you :lol
The person who is getting a one probably knew they were taking a huge risk.
-
i am genuinely and truly disappointed
-
I mean I can knock it down if it means that much to you :lol
-
Hell yeah, I can do a fun song. Last time this was a theme in a roulette I sent King of Swords (Reversed) so I guess I have a better grasp of what you consider fun than in the relaxing round.
-
Should we already send our fun stuff?
-
Not yet.
-
Sorry for the long delay guys.
5 - Bent Knee - Being Human - Sacul
It sounds to me like you listened to my reference songs and really ran with the Yakushimaru one, which is great. While it didn't quite get there for length, damn did this song have the feel I wanted. Really enjoyed this song.
4 - Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not - Parama
Good stuff here. Violin may be my second favourite instrument after guitar, and when those two come together it's just...
4 - Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope - Scorpion
Similar to my feelings on the other song by this group. I liked it a lot. I think I liked this song just a little bit better, but not enough to be a whole extra point.
4 - Marillion - Neverland - Stadler
Cool tune. I know this band is pretty popular around these parts and I see why. Definitely enjoyed this one.
4 - Between the Buried and Me - Lay Your Ghosts to Rest - Ultimetalhead
So like almost everyone who was into prog metal in 2007 I am quite familiar with Colors, and I like Selkies a lot, but other than that I don't listen to a lot of BTBAM. After being thoroughly disappointed with The Great Misdirect I stopped listening to their new releases and this song has convinced me that that was probably a mistake. Good stuff.
4 - Haken - Visions - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Pretty cool song. Reminded me of DT a lot. The story of the song was interesting and I enjoyed the journey it went on, musically.
4 - The Human Abstract - Antebellum - Train of Naught
The only song by this band I really know is Vela, Together We Await the Storm, and I love that song. This song reminds me of it in a good way.
3 - While Heaven Wept - The Furthest Shore - Shadow Ninja 2.0
Cool tune, but nothing about it really grabbed me or stood out.
3 - Agalloch - In the Shadow of our Pale Companion - senecadawg2
So I've tried to get into Agalloch before without much success, and I'm having the same problem here: I'm just not into Black Metal. I note some Folk influences as well which I liked a bit more, but overall the Black Metal elements really kept this from being something I could get into.
1 - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Allah, Mohammed, Char, Yaar - Fluffy Lothario
This song... was just 100% not my style. I did not enjoy it. It honestly took quite a bit of willpower to get through it. My reaction was basically:
Standings:
Sacul - 24
Train of Naught - 23
Scorpion - 23
Ultimetalhead - 22
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 21
Stadler - 20
Senecadawg2 - 19
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 19
Parama - 19
Fluffy Lothario - 17
I'll repeat next round's theme is fun. Some example songs are Devin Townsend's "Bad Devil", The Dear Hunter's "King of Swords (Reversed)".
-
:metal
-
i mean, yeah, being human is *that* good so ok
anyways i'm going with a very literal interpretation of the theme
-
i mean, yeah, being human is *that* good so ok
Slowly spreading my love for them on this forum ;D btw hyped for new album omg
-
when is it coming out i'm getting it
this year is just absolutely loaded with albums i'm hyped for tbh, the astonishing will probably be the worst 2016 album i get this year :lol
-
In May :P
But yeah, there's a shitton of stuff coming out in 2016 I'm hyped for, and that's just the bands I follow :caffeine:
-
may, omg, i'm literally never going to have time to get to my backlog this year am i :lol
by which i mean the backlog of stuff that's not on my main sites. there's like 4 or 5 now
-
The person who is getting a one probably knew they were taking a huge risk.
Eh, you'd be surprised. I've played Nusrat around a fair number of people, and the large percentage of reactions is fairly positive. Yours is by far the most negative he's ever gotten in my experience. The dude collaborated with Peter Gabriel and Eddie Vedder (and a bunch of electronic artists), and Jeff Buckley covered his stuff, so despite the style of music, he somehow has far wider appeal than you'd think.
But if you didn't like it, fair enough.
-
Damn, one point behind :'(
I haev a lot of fun songs so this is a hard choice. I guess parama sent fun. such a hard guess.
EDIT: Sent some super mario metal
-
sent
-
Sent. Went out on a tad bit of a limb, not too much.
-
Still waiting on a few submissions... Have sent PMs to those responsible.
-
:millahhhh
-
i'll save you from the depths of infinity, little thread
also who sent foxy shazam, that song is cool
-
There's human beings on this world that don't know Soundgarden's Rusty Cage? Damn.
Just this afternoon I found out fun. is the same band that put out that cool popular party song "We Are Young". Oh well, no band's perfect
I bet Brass Goggles will win the round, fucking great song. Fishies and Stomp That Goomba are cool too though
-
yeah, fun.'s second album is trash tbh :lol
there's a few decent songs (Some Nights in particular is great) but the album as a whole is boring and watered-down from their debut
-
Brass Goggles is awesome indeed.
-
Sorry again for the delays everyone. I'll try to have results for this round today or tomorrow.
In the meantime, originally I was planning to have this run for ten rounds, but if you'd prefer, rather than having you keep waiting I can make round eight the last one. Let me know your thoughts on that.
-
considering you're already over the recommended 2-month time limit, having the next round be the last is fine
-
Fine with me! I'm running out of the good stuff anyways, so maybe this way I still have a chance of knocking Sacul off his throne.
Are there currently 5 roulettes running? Madness :lol I guess for the sake of keeping things in a timely manner it's for the best to end it at 8 too then.
-
there's only 4 running rn.
-
:corn
-
honestly i may be ready to run a roulette again by the time my turn comes up bcuz while i do have stuff still on my to-get list none of it is the reeeeally good stuff at this point, at least not from the roulette, there's a few black metal albums from my own searches and that earthside one too but w/e
maybe i'll go check out the 8.0's at some point and see if there's anything decent there
-
Listen to all my submissions first.
Especially the ones that sucked.
-
Working on writeups now ~~
Next round will be last and it'll be open
I think I will also make it worth DOUBLE
SO NOW IS THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
PICK YOUR BEST
DON'T SEND ANYTHING UNTIL THE RESULTS GO OUT
INCLUDE THE GODDAMN TITLE AND ARTIST IN YOUR PM
-
it probably shouldn't be worth double tbh everyone's already blown their best stuff at this point :P
-
sending trash rn without song title and artist k
-
But I like the idea of it still being anyone's game :(
Though I can see how that might be frustrating for those at the top.
Iunno discuss amongst yourselves
-
I pretty much always send without any real strategy or anything, so I'm pretty much planning on keeping that up. :lol
But I never send anything that I don't think is really good.
-
it probably shouldn't be worth double tbh everyone's already blown their best stuff at this point :P
Oh how you've underestimated me.
-
Though I can see how that might be frustrating for those at the top.
i'm at the bottom though :lol
i just don't really think it's fair to make one round worth extra. if any round should've been worth double it shoud've been the epic round, but :lol
and fluffy, for what it's worth i have two songs that i haven't entered yet that could both be the "best" thing i send but since me and genowyn's tastes differ a fair bit he'd probably give either of them a 3/5 :lol
-
Just hand me the crown :P
-
Just hand me the crown :P
Don't get ahead of yourself.
5 - Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord - Scorpion
Ohh yessss. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHQ6ba-n12E) I can see why two people tried to submit this song. This was a blast to listen to. Sort of reminded me of Queen? Good times.
4 - The Cat Empire - Fishies - Ultimetalhead
Cool song. Makes me want to dance. Makes me think of Grim Fandango.
4 - Steam Powered Giraffe - Brass Goggles - Shadow Ninja 2.0
I did not expect a steampunk themed band to exist, and yet of course I did. This was cool. The concept on its own was pretty great, and an enjoyable tune as well.
4 - fun. - Walking the Dog - Parama
Definitely an enjoyable tune and a fun listen. Yep.
3 - Moron Police - Stomp That Goomba - Train of Naught
Definitely an interesting tune, and fun for sure, but I wasn't all that into it musically.
3 - Soundgarden - Rusty Cage - Fluffy Lothario
So I haven't actually heard this song before. It's pretty cool. I remember they talked about it on Game Grumps one time. I dug the main riff but didn't enjoy the vocal performance as much.
3 - Kiss - Shout it Out Loud - Stadler
Again definitely a fun song, but I wasn't to into it as far as the music goes.
3 - Panic! At the Disco - Camisado - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Cool song. Wasn't super into the vocal performance, but it was cool otherwise.
2 - Bill Callahan - Ride My Arrow - senecadawg2
Not really sure what's meant to be fun with this song. Wasn't really into the song itself anyway.
2 - Jonelle Monae - Tightrope - Sacul
I feel like I have definitely heard this song in like a hair dye commercial. I also don't really like it.
Standings:
Scorpion - 28
Sacul - 26
Train of Naught - 26
Ultimetalhead - 26
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 24
Stadler - 23
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 23
Parama - 23
Senecadawg2 - 21
Fluffy Lothario - 20
Once again the next round is the final round and will be open!
I am considering making it worth double points... weigh in!
Make sure you include the artist and name of the song in your PM, please do not send an unlabelled YouTube link!
-
foxy shazam is one of those artists i've known about for a while because of that song but never looked into further
-
:'(
-
Sent
-
sent earlier yeah, but resending apparently :lol
-
I probably should have sent Come Alive (War of the Roses) by her, but Tightrope is amazing as well, so :sadpanda:
Will send tomorrow.
-
I would probably not do the double points myself if I were the host right now, but it's up to you.
sent
-
Normally, I peruse my library a little for ideas before sending, but I’m on holiday at the moment.
So I’ll have to send something pretty much off the top of my head.
-
Oh, and as person in last place, I’m not fussed if the last roujd is double or not, it’s your call. I’ll be happy to claw my way into second to last place.
-
I guess we won't double the points...
Unfortunately that means some of you are playing for honor, but...
-
I want double points
-
how about
the people who don't want double points
dont get double points
and then
the rest of us
:neverusethis:
It doesn't really matter too much to me either way, though.
-
Well, my final song is REALLY good so I wouldn't mind doubles either. It's just that I think it should be consulted with the unreal heir first because he will suffer from it the most.
-
I sent Burzum
-
Sent.
I vote against double points.
-
I'm against double points.
-
:sadpanda:
-
Then again, I don't think anybody expected me to be for them. Genowyn, just do what you feel like, seriously.
I will send tomorrow, I'm still deciding between two potential submissions.
-
I'm against double points.
-
Couldn't care less about double points.
I'll send my submission tomorrow.
-
Stadler is doing a roulette? That's interesting. Checking out the submissions.
Edit: Not sure what is shorter. Genown's banned list or Brent's non banned list! :lol
-
Edit: Not sure what is shorter. Genown's banned list or Brent's non banned list! :lol
And we still manage to send crappy songs :lol
-
Can I send a 36-minute song? :P
-
I'd rather you didn't :lol
We had a whole epic round for that
-
What's up?
-
Final results will be in the next day or two.
-
did someone sadly send burzum lol
-
After I'm pretty sure I said earlier I don't like black metal
-
I'd say "whoops", but honestly, I've stopped caring about this roulette, like, a month ago.
-
did someone sadly send burzum lol
I sent Burzum
I'd say "whoops", but honestly, I've stopped caring about this roulette, like, a month ago.
-
You're in good company, I sent Ihsahn.
-
Except Ihsahn is much better than Burzum :lol
-
I don't remember what I sent.
Not that that's any different from normal. :P
-
I sent cursive
But I forgot that I sent them until I checked genowyn's last.fm
-
I sent Euzen :P
-
Hmm.. willing to bet on Where the Things Have No Colour since that leans towards the heavy metal side of things opposed to the crazy Destrage style, think that's a good song for this roulette too. Guess I'll see when the results are up, I'm curious what wolfking thinks about this band.
This reminds me I currently have a Destrage song being rated in another roulette, but it has been so long that I completely forgot that that roulette even existed.
Hmmm, I wonder which roulette that could posibly be. :justjen
The cat is out of the bag guys
-
I sent Euzen :P
wow. you like that thing don't you?
-
Yeah, they're pretty great, thanks for sending them in my roulette
-
It's TERSE because WRITEUPS ARE HARD
4 - Arcane - Unturning - Sir Walrus Cauliflower
Pretty damn cool. Enjoyed quite a bit.
4 - Ihsahn - Undercurrent - Scorpion
Somehow you have done it - you have found a black metal song that I enjoyed.
4 - Keane - Bedshaped - Stadler
Well I know this wasn't your first choice... unfortunately the exact song you wanted wasn't on Spotify. Still, I liked this song quite a bit.
4 - Cursive - Driftwood: A Fairy Tale - Parama
I liked it. See not a 3 or anything.
3 - Euzen - The Stage - Sacul
Pretty cool.
3 - Nick Drake - 'Cello Song - Fluffy Lothario
Also pretty cool.
3 - The Plot In You - Time Changes Everything - Shadow Ninja 2.0
Cool but not quite as cool.
3 - Destrage - Purania - Train of Naught
Spicy.
3 - HINTO - Kanashimi Update(?) - Ultimetalhead
It is definitely Kanashimi but I can only read Hiragana, so the Katakana of the second word is outta my league.
I mean, uh, kakkoii.
1 - Burzum - Dunkelheit - senecadawg2
:(
Standings:
Scorpion - 32
Sacul - 29
Train of Naught - 29
Ultimetalhead - 29
Sir Walrus Cauliflower - 28
Stadler - 27
Parama - 27
Shadow Ninja 2.0 - 26
Fluffy Lothario - 23
Senecadawg2 - 22
Welp apparently someone who doesn't care anymore won. My bad.
Anyway thank you all for participating~ Sorry again for the delays, certainly won't do something like this again unless I'm in a more stable position in my personal life. I found at least one band that I will be listening to plenty of going forward, and a few great new songs as well.
-
yay we did it
-
Damn, how did I not come last? I had one 1 and at least two 2s.
As someone who backed the fuck away from black metal after hearing a bit of it, and then LOVED Emperor’s last album because it was so different from all the other black metal I heard (largely spoken/sung vocals rather than growls/screeches, actually good production, less grating 80s spooky keyboard effects and so on) and it apparently shows the direction Ihsahn was going to take in his solo career, I can see why Ihsahn might be an anomaly.
Oh, and I can read katakana, and the second word is Update, as it is in the English title.
-
My suffering has finally ended.
-
Ihsahn is awesome. Also congrats, Scorp!
-
Yay!
-
Alrighty. Cool. I was really hoping for a 5 on that last song, but I'll take it.
-
Alrighty. Cool. I was really hoping for a 5 on that last song, but I'll take it.
If it's any consolation, I would have given you a 5 for Unturning in a heartbeat - one of my favourite songs from last year, the final build-up is ridiculously amazing.
-
After a few quick calculations, had the points been doubled in the last round, it wouldn't have made much difference to the final rankings.
