I started a thread specifically for this venue, so lets try and discuss any plans, meetups, and other stuff, here instead of in random threads so there aren't any misinformation issues. I'm curious as to where people are sitting, who wants to meet up beforehand, etc.
-
I'll repeat some info here:
Orchestra 5, Row XX, Seat 501/502
Really happy with my seats and excited to see DT at this venue since I was not a fan when Score was filmed. I'll be spending the night at a hotel so I'll be ready to partay. I'm down for a meet up before hand, it's a Saturday so I can get there early.
-
I'm in Orchestra 4, Row A, Seat 407. I was hoping for seat 508. ;)
I was at the Score show and was part of the dt.net forum meetup. I have a few photos of me, Nick, and Meg that Meg gave me. Maybe I'll add them here later on - especially so we can tease Nick about his old hairdo. :lol
-
Cool, I've met a couple people here at meet ups before DT shows before, but this show has the potential to have a large turnout. I hope to meet some new folks.
-
Cool they're playing here again, but do you really think they'd film in the same venue twice? Might be nice to record somewhere else, but what do I know?

I don't, is there a rumor of filming this here?
Nice pics Prog

Just picked up two seats....YOOHOO!
The last time I saw them here was too amazing to miss this time!
Looking forward to meeting more of you
-
I'm in. Middle of the first mezzanine.
-
Thanks Cram.
It should be great meeting those of you I didn't meet the first time, or forgot I met. :lol I was high on painkillers, otherwise back problems would have kept me home.
-
I got Orchestra 4, row D; right in the middle of it all. It's definitely a better seat than what I had for Score. I'll be attending with a friend and we'd love to meet up and eat/have a beer. I remember meeting people from the MP forum and taking an amazing picture with everyone. I would love to have that pic again, since I lost it.
I've done the VIP thing a few times before, so I rather use that $$$ to see the Baltimore show the night after. I am surprised that my level of excitement for DT is back to high, after 23+ years of fandom.

Nice seats. You are three rows behind me.

Orchestra 4 Row GG 401

Wow, you're really close, plus an aisle seat. Nice!

Wow, you're really close, plus an aisle seat. Nice!
Right, but it's not FIRST row.... However, is DT's presentation going to be like at a movie and who'd like to sit in the first row?? Or, there will be an orchestra ( as those seats are not available ) Who knows. I will add, my wife, in seat 402, got the tix, but struggled at that because even trying at 10AM EDT that was the first choice..... It is kinda odd? It is what it is, we got VIP tix and prolly a better seat, as it is not 1st row, life is good. We'll get a trip to Manhattan out of the deal too! Looking forward to it VERY much!
We're arriving in NYC on the 21st and are on the hunt for a frigging cronut! LOL We're up for a pre-show event.....

Well a few of us are going to get together beforehand, so keep an eye on this thread as it gets closer to the event date. We'll have something figured out.
As far as there being orchestra, I don't think that's going to happen. But I suppose we'll find out more about the specifics of the stage show once they start touring.
-
I have a feeling this is going to be too good. So I have decided to bust my budget, cancel any jobs for Fri-Sat-Sun, and make a mini-vacation of it. I went on Stub Hub and selected Orchestra 4 Row PP near the aisle. I got raped, but I couldn't find anything better anywhere else. I also found a hotel room 4 blocks from Radio City on 46th St, so I will head in on Friday, have some dinner with friends who live in the East Village, then spend Saturday hanging out in the Times Square area getting psyched and hitting some stores. Which will add to the budget destruction. I like the fact that there will be a couple of months to learn all the songs and get into the storyline. So I don't expect to be attending a concert, but more of a multi-show with characteristics of a concert, a movie, a presentation and a play. This seems much more interesting than going to just another concert with album songs and a light show followed by the obligatory phony encore. Looking forward to something different and dramatic!
-
:lol I love the Addams Family Values quote in your profile. There are so many great lines in that movie.
"Aren't you the lady killer?"
"Acquitted!"
-
Amanda: Why are you dressed like that?
Wednesday: Like what?
Amanda: Like you are going to a funeral. Why are you dressed like somebody died?
Wednesday: Wait.
-
:lol
As soon as I figure out how many people are going to want to meet up, I'll find a place that can hold us. I already mentioned this earlier but anyone who needs a place to crash is welcome to stay at my place.
-
Hey all, I'll be at RCMH Orch 5 row JJ seats 503 and 504.
-
did anyone else just get an email from live nation about presale this week for this show? I think someone's a bit late in that area...

Flying to NYC for the concert. Going by myself, got platinum VIP in row GG directly in the center. Very excited!

Most excellent. Looking forward to reconvening. We'll need to make sure the food is of sufficient quality!

The opportunity to meet up with a ton of people was one of the big draws for me. As I'm not such a big fan of DT at this point, the show's really more of a catalyst for getting me up there to hang out with a variety of cool folk, including my long time concert buddy from down here who's taking a completely different route to rendez-vous there.
I noticed that Thai fusion place went belly up. Damn shame as the tom kha gai might be the best I've ever had.

Well, shit...that's disappointing. Hadn't been there since we met up, but the wife and I almost went over the holidays...of course, it would have been an aborted attempt.
Not like there aren't a couple of other decent restaurants in the city, though...
-
Whoever wants to meet up beforehand, let me know. When I get a better idea of the amount of people, I'll know what to look for. If we have to rent out a space like for the Radio City show then I'll look into that.
-
There are two decent tickets for resale in ORCH4 row C, since it's resale so they're only being sold together, if anyone is interested in buying them with me please PM.

There are much better deals on StubHub.

Count me in, but just as 1. I think my friend won't be hanging out pre-show unless his wife loosens up her clench on his balls.
Hope no one is backing out now that the album is out
-
Your poor friend.
Well, so far it's just you and I. :lol I'm sure others will confirm with me when they get a chance.
-
Perusing this thread I'd say you're looking at 7 regulars at a minimum, plus SO's and people who haven't made up their minds yet. Since it's a weekend and in their home town, I'd think some more people will come aboard.
-
Indeed. I'll just walk the around the area when I'm up there next, which could be any day really. There are a few places I have in mind though.
-
I forget where Nick and I are sitting for the concert, but I'll be heading into the city early for a boozy brunch and then barhopping for a bit before the show.
-
OK...the trigger has been pulled! NYC BABY! Orch 4 row MM :metal :metal :metal SO Excited!
-
CrimsonSunrise did you buy resale tickets? Cause I can't find anything around where you're sitting.
-
Just to confirm, I'm in.
-
Awesome!
-
I'm in for two.
Getting more and more excited for this show with each listen :metal
-
:metal
I'll draw up a spreadsheet to keep track of who's in.

Aw man, we've been losing Thai places in the city like crazy. :( My favorite "genre" of food... my go-to place in Hell's Kitchen (the locale, not the DT song ;)) closed up without a word a couple months back, and just before that I lost the one down the block from my apartment... now I have to order from the "other" Thai place in the neighborhood, and it's not the same.
Oh, right, on topic, uh, Orch 3, Row A, 311. :)
-
What is the "other" Thai place? I'll check it out next time I'm working near it.
-

Well to clarify that's the "other" place in my neighborhood, which unless you happen to be in it -- Inwood -- is probably not convenient. :) In midtown I'd recommend any of the Yum Yums (3 was my favorite, though they recently changed their menu) or Room Service... further downtown in the West Village I'm a fan of Tue Thai.

I work for the MTA and I'm based out of downtown Brooklyn. With that, I go to different locations depending on where they're having network issues, so I'm always looking for new places to eat.

You work for the MTA? In that case, my apologies for all the times I've namelessly cursed you and your coworkers. ;)
"Yummy Thai" is where I get my pad ki mao in Inwood, if they ever send you up to the end of the A line. Though if you're in Inwood, you should probably be checking out some south-of-the-border dishes... there's a place I tried recently called Cachapas y Mas which is delicious after a long day's work (or a long night's partying), though I recommend telling them to hold the sauce. (Also their empanadas are cheap and excellent.)

I curse at the subway, too. Unfortunately I have to wait like everybody else. Thankfully, I have nothing to do with the schedule. Transit workers are...lazy.
I'm going to write those places down. Thanks!

Isn't the MTA building out a massive wifi network for the subways? I think I had someone reach out to me about a job opportunity for that.

At the risk of derailing (HEYO! PUNS!), I think they're in the midst of that process, yeah. I haven't seen many specific updates from them, but based on my observations over the past year or so, it's popping up in stations where I know it wasn't before. Midtown has been mostly covered for a year or two now, but a lot of upper Manhattan stations have gotten it in recent months, so it's definitely spreading even to the "typically overlooked" stations. It's a nice convenience, though as always I'd settle for the trains being on time. :)
-
CrimsonSunrise did you buy resale tickets? Cause I can't find anything around where you're sitting.
Yes, I bought mine on stubhub. It was tough trying to find a single ticket. On Ticketmaster they had Platinum seating, row CC 3 seats in from the aisle for ORCH 4, but I would have had to buy 2 tix :(
Here's a link to the Platinum seats....

I'm interested in meeting up as well for sure, would have a +1 w me. Let me know if I can help with anything, I work fairly close by.
PS has anyone received the physical tix they bought from DT.net yet? I bought on day they were released and purchased through songkick...

The place El Barto and I met up was Cafetasia, by NYU...Thai, Vietnamese, Laotian.
I'll tell ya, Hoboken doesn't have shit for passable Thai food. Maybe we got spoiled in Queens, where even the middle-of-the-road places were pretty good, but the place here that's allegedly the best is...not good. Now when we want decent Thai, we go into SoHo.
Also, for as mob-run as Hoboken is, you'd think there'd be decent pizza here. But you'd be wrong.

Yeah, I was one of the refugees that got relocated when my old site on Long Island got closed down as part of the great Forest/Warner-Chilcott/Actavis/Durata/Furiex/Aptalis/Allergan (and soon to be Pfizer) pharmaceutical M&A orgy. I work in Jersey City now. I have better Manhattan access now then when I actually lived in the city.
-
Wow. For once I'm not anguished and bitter about not being invited to an orgy.

Does anyone know the best airport to fly into if you're coming in from out of town? I don't know if LGA or JFK is closer to Radio City by a significant amount.

It takes about the same time to get to midtown from LGA, JFK, or EWR. Give or take some depending on traffic. I say go with whatever flight is the cheapest or timing or whatever suits your needs.

If it makes a difference, Newark and JFK are better if you prefer transit to a cab -- both have an AirTrain connection to commuter rail (NJ Transit and Long Island RR, respectively) that will take you to Penn Station. LaGuardia, you'll want a cab unless you're excited to take a bus to a subway...
-
I'm flying into EWR, it was cheap and the train aspect was appealing. I haven't been to Manhattan since '93, so I'm pretty excited.

EWR has always been my airport of choice. It's a quick shot to the train station and the airport itself isn't that awful. I've also never sat on the tarmac 18th for departure there, which I've heard does come up sometimes at LGA or JFK.
Proximity to RCMH is irreverent. You're going to ride a train and likely several subways any way you slice it.

I always fly out of EWR, just because its only 30 minutes from me.... but I don't think I've ever heard "airport itself isn't that awful" because it is pretty awful. Usually ranked near the bottom in US airports.

Beats the hell out of LGA.

Yeah, I would never use LGA either. I was pleased with Newark both times I used it, so good luck getting me to change that, what with my fear of flying.

Funny. The only time I've ever thought there was a good chance I might crash and die was on final at EWR the day of the Score show. Thirty knot crosswinds gusting into the 40s with a light drizzle. I enjoyed the experience of a crab landing, but I wasn't hugely confident about making the show alive. :lol
And I chose the words isn't that awful rather deliberately.
-
Oh my... :lol
I don't know how people travel on a monthly basis without taking years off their life. :eek
-
Having a relaxed attitude towards dying certainly helps. :lol
In my case, having a good understanding of what it takes for a plane to crash, and how terribly unlikely it is, leads me to have very little concern about safety. I rather enjoy the flying part of it. I just dislike being crammed into a small seat surrounded by annoying strangers. The rewards of going to neat places invariably trumps the 3-10 hours of suckiness, though.
-
And I chose the words isn't that awful rather deliberately.
I know you did, so did I :lol
In reality, EWR has been getting a make over and the food/drink is much better and also every seat has an Ipad to order what you want, at least in Terminal C where United operates. Parts are still under construction, but it's definitely improved.
-

That's just the problem. I'm acrophobic and claustrophobic. I know how rare it is for a plane to crash. I know I'm technically safer in a plane than in a car. This isn't about logic for me. :lol
-
Spared no expense last night boys. Bought a couple of tickets for solid seats, bought a couple of plane tickets, and got a hotel room only a few minutes walk from Radio City. This is going to be an awesome mini-vacation!

That's awesome. At what hotel are you staying?

Nice, I got a hotel room too, even though I don't live that far away like the rest of you.

I used xanax when I flew. It takes the edge off and I'm somewhat bearable to the people around me.
-
LOL. After touting myself as the fearless flyer, I'm stuck trying to decide if I want to save a bundle by flying a discount Mexican carrier operating CRJs built by Sukhoi down to DF. Honestly, the Sukhoi superjets sound rather intriguing to me; I don't mind smaller airplanes. However, my knowledge of global hiring practices makes me a wee be skittish about the carrier.
-
You mean, like those scenes from a movie where there's just one parachute on board and the pilot is doing lines off the stewardesses back? :lol
-
You mean, like those scenes from a movie where there's just one parachute on board and the pilot is doing lines off the stewardesses back? :lol
Eh, depending on the quality of the stewardess that probably wouldn't trouble me much. My concern is basic stick and rudder skills, which a lot of the newer pilots lack.
-
I'm getting anxiety thinking about this. I could never get on some double engine aircraft. I get what you're saying though. Most pilots can't handle anything other than full-size planes.
-
Anybody still looking for tickets?

If I knew they were going to have an orchestra for this show I'd buy a pair right now! Any news on an orchestra show yet?

Not that I heard and honestly doubt it would be this show since that's been done before at this venue.

But this could also be an especially special night.

Could be? It BETTER be!!!! ;D Starting to get pumped up for the cross country trek! :metal :metal :metal

For how long are you staying on the right coast?

I arrive Friday afternoon and return to LA on Sunday afternoon. I have a whirlwind turnaround, I fly out Tues. morn to Cozumel for 18 days of glorious diving and relaxation. I want to make the most of what lil time I'll have in the City. Haven't been to NYC since '93.

Well, I plan on making the day of the concert a whole day in the city, so if there's somewhere specific you want to go, maybe we can gather a few others together. After that you can sneak me on the plane to Cozumel. ;)

Just to show how much of a geek I am, I'd probably pass up the vacation so I could be home to watch Game of Thrones that weekend. Or maybe that just makes me a jackass. :lol
-
Jackass :lol although I was on a work trip in Europe during the last two episodes of season 4 and I had to go the illegal route to watch them because I was going nuts on the inside not being able to watch them live.
-
I ran into the same problem a couple of years ago when I was in Disney. The room didn't have HBO so I downloaded the torrent later that evening. :lol
-
To quote "The Matrix" ... you need to unplug ;D Hey I'm open for about anything on concert day, been talking to Yeshaberto about a possible tour thing. But hey, lets throw some ideas out...I'm game!
-
Y'all keep me posted. Since I'll be spending the preceding days scrambling all over CT, I've left Fri and Sat in NYC wide open.
-
There's a Friday's right near there. I know it's not the best option for food but it's good enough to get some drinks and appetizers. If that's something the majority would be open to then I could call ahead and let them know how many people would be coming.
-
I plan on probably heading into the city late morning and getting brunch/drinks somewhere, and then just posting up at a bar somewhere near the venue.
-

Exactly my plan. My friend and I will probably hit Katz's Deli for some pastrami and then hang around the area surrounding RCMH.

I wouldn't. The last time I saw DT in NYC was 2013 during the NCAA march madness tournament. Every place was packed so we went to Fridays. It was HORRIBLE at best.

Personally, I've gone to that Fridays once before and wouldn't go back, it's expensive because of location, but it's still the same Friday's food that is like 40% cheaper anywhere else. Also, I'm kind of turned off from Fridays (a bunch in NJ so maybe not effecting the NY franchises) since they got caught swapping the top shelf liquor with bottom shelf at least in NJ so they lost my trust in buying drinks from them.
But I'm up for whatever you guys want to do since a lot of people are traveling from distances that I think it's best for those to have the strongest input and get to experience NYC on some level.
-
There are plenty of places in the area. I'll see what else is there and list a bunch of them later. There's a Five Guys there, too. However, I don't think they serve alcohol and that's a must. :lol
-
I'll leave it to you savvy NYC peeps... just gimme a meet time and place
-
So long as people don't mind walking (stumbling?) a few blocks, Hell's Kitchen is three blocks straight west from RCMH, and will have better food/drink options (at better prices, with fewer tourists) than anything right near the venue.

Three blocks west is closer to my hotel so works for me (staying on 57th and 9th). Honestly, I am game for anything, whatever works for everyone.
-
I'm probably going to the Lower East Side to hit my regular brunch spot https://www.foolsgoldnyc.com/
Game to meet up anywhere near the venue later in the day. Going to see if anyone on my beer forum has any bar recommendations.
-
This place is one of the better beer bars in the area. I've been there once before. They have 48 taps and over 40 bottled beers. If this is good for everyone, let me know. If there is going to be a lot of us, then I'll call ahead and make reservations.

^ I was just coming here to propose that exact bar.

I'll message those who expressed interest in meeting up and see how many want to come. At least this way I can call the place and give them a basic idea of how many people are coming.
-
Sweet, also close to my hotel. I'll probably check in and then meet up with you guys.
-
I was going to suggest Brickyard (one block further south), but I'm not going to second-guess distinguished booze-hounds such as yourselves.
-
Valhalla has good bar food too -- fried pickles and such.

Are CroNuts really worth the wait?
LOL. I don't believe in waiting for food, especially in NYC. If there's a wait someplace I just walk down the block to another. The idea of waiting in line to eat something "trendy" is just anathema to me.

Not if it's just Trendy, but good food you can't find anywhere else can be worth the wait.

I am working with a couple of the people from the fan clubs regarding the meetup. We're going to create an events invite for this on Facebook. If you don't have Facebook, let me know, and I'll see make sure everyone knows you're coming.

I won't be going to this show, but FWIW, we met up with a bunch of people from Facebook prior to the recent Iron Maiden show at MSG. We all went to Stout on 33rd, just up the street from MSG. I thought it was pretty decent, YMMV.
https://www.msg.stoutnyc.com/
Never mind, for some reason, I thought this was at MSG, not RCMH.

Stout is pretty good, even if not applicable...

I'll have to check Stout out sometime. Last time I needed a beer not far from MSG I went to a new-ish place called Haymarket that had a damn good taplist.

We got there during college football season sometimes...wife is a Texas fan, and Stout is the home-base for the UT alums on game day.

Tonic for the Penn State Alums :metal so much fun going to one of the alum bars for their college football games.

Stout was f*cking PACKED the night of the Maiden show. It also helped that they were playing Live After Death on all the TV screens.

Just saw this from the new dt fan club on fb

I was just about to come post it. We decided on changing the venue because the Valhalla said they weren't sure if they would be able to accommodate everyone.

Cool, not like I really care where the meet up is, but I am the only one who accepted the invite so if you see me, Marc, feel free to fb me.
-
I just did, actually. :lol I'm working with a couple of the fan club people on this. I'm thinking about going to the Baltimore show and meetup.
-
Really cool that you guys are arranging a meet-up before and after the show. I'll be there with two friends from Norway. Looking forward to meeting you all!
-
I joined the FB page. Marc! I sent you e friend request, can't believe we didn't do that last time around
-
Not a facebook kinda guy, so I'm checking in here for the meetup.

We're heading to the Brickyard Gastropub at 3PM, 785 9th Avenue.

OK guys... need some advice. Being from SoCal I'm challenged when it comes to Public Transportation. Hell, we get in our cars to drive around the corner here! SO!! please help me get into the city! Coming into Newark (EWR) and I heard there is a train from the terminal to Penn station Newark? From there a train into the city? The I'm guessing subway to my hotel @ 59 West 46th Street?
-
You can take the light rail from the airport to the NJ Transit Rail Station for the Airport (not sure if there is a charge for this) and then from the Airport train station you can hop on the train into Penn State NYC which is 3 stops away (maybe 20 minutes ride and will cost money). From Penn Station you can hop onto a subway, take a taxi, or just walk to 46th street (I typically would walk from 34th st to 46t, but maybe you'll have luggage).
-
Thanks, Marc! I'll look at the map, I think when I initially set the hotel I looked at the distance from Penn station to Times Square, that looked way to far for me to walk.. :lol
-

I'm a walker for sure
https://web.mta.info/nyct/maps/subwaymap.pdf (https://web.mta.info/nyct/maps/subwaymap.pdf)
That should be useful, one stop from Penn Station to Times Square.
I'm still thinking about how I want to do this, thinking of cancelling my hotel room and re-doing it using points and getting a nicer room somewhere in Times Square. I'm considering the idea of spending the whole weekend in the city too if nothing comes up Friday night. I had a blast walking through Central Park last Saturday.
-
Yeah, Penn Station Newark never factors into it. You'll be heading the opposite direction. The light rail from EWR is free. Then you'll pay something like $12 or so for your train ticket to Penn NYC. Be sure to have your camera out. The scenic train ride from EWR is lovely.

Here's the place I'm staying. It had good reviews, seemed central, and was comparatively inexpensive.

See! That's why I asked for directions!!! I'd frikken end up in Florida left to my own devices. Camera will be at the ready! It's gonna be great to finally meet you Barto!

Also, the trip planner on MTA.info is pretty handy for getting public transportation directions from point A to point B
-
Thanks Axe, I'll check that out.
-
Holy Crap! Anyone looked at ticketmaster recently??? Pit tix available for $125. Suffice to say, I upgraded... :lol Now I am PIT CCC one seat right of dead center. Which means I have an Orch 4,row MM, seat 413 (right on the aisle) available for CHEAP, or possibly even free if someone can't afford the show and wants to go.
-
Nice, not surprised honestly if this concert isn't selling that well. Radio City is a much bigger venue for DT and it worked for Score as a one off anniversary show, not sure it would work so well for this show though.
-
Yeah, BBB was available a couple of days ago. No money left to upgrade, and I have 4th row for the CT show anyway, so I can afford to slum it that night.
edit:

It's actually selling pretty well. Those are just platinum and VIP tickets that didn't sell and have been released.
-
You are correct, I just assumed... there are more pit tickets too.... fuck I want those! but it would be a big risk of losing my money spent on some already pretty good seats.
-
Yeah, I'm way back at PP, but those were $65 and I've got a small fortune invested in this trip already. Thankfully, I've seen DT from front row several times already, so it's pretty easy to tell the voices in my head urging me to upgrade to fuck off. :lol

Yea, if I was solo i'd consider it, but convincing my friend to also take the risk... probably not happening. I've never been up that close for DT, but got close enough in GA pits before to be satisfied for that experience.
My friend also confirmed he won't be joining the pre-game festivities, nor after show ceremonies. He's got a little baby to be home for.

Rebooked my hotel, I checked this morning and then just again and the price on my same room dropped 80 bucks. Looks like all of the IHG hotels dropped, wonder what happened. Either way, this hotel is on 57th and 9th.

I'm in Orchestra 4 Row OO, which I think is somewhat close. Really excited for Saturday! I'm leaving NC early that morning and returning the next day. It's a lot traveling for a couple of days but the direct flight only takes like 1:45, which isn't bad.

That's pretty close. I was in row PP for the Score show. *waits for excretory jokes*
-
I think I was in EE for score, but way off to Myung/Rudess's side. This time I'm in CC, fairly well centered.
-
Do you guys think people will sit most of the show? It would be awesome if the crowd stood.
-

I think so. I'd rather stand personally, but I'm not going to stand if I am the only one. If I had my way, I'd be rocking out up and down the isle especially since I think I am going to be nice and saucey come concert time. Since you are making it up that day, are you going to have time to join the meet up?
-

I'm guessing I'll remain seated for a good 90% of the show when I see them on Wednesday.
-
I honestly don't remember how it went last time at Radio City. I'll follow the lead of whoever had the seats in front of me.
-

Luckily we dont need to rely on memory, it's on video. Youtube is a bit grainy, but almost looks like the first couple rows are standing and the rest are sitting besides certain points where everyone stands.

Safe flight Brotha! Hey, I'll throw it out again, I now have an extra ticket. My old one, ORCH 4 MM right on the aisle. If someone can put it to use give me a shout.
-
Rebooked my hotel again and saved another $10. I guess this Saturday night isn't a big night for NYC as the rates are super low (maybe has something to do with the awesome weather we've had lately and people wanting to get out of the city). I think I've gotten the cheapest rate I've ever had at this hotel.

Holiday Inn 57th St. You may find cheaper than that though, I know Greg did when we looked awhile ago, but I use IHG for work and have status so I stick with it to keep my perks (I usually get a top floor room with a view here for example and a free drink (or two if I sweet talk during check in) at the bar).
-
I re-checked availability and prices on Bookit.com, and nothing wowed me more than what I already have at the Hotel At Times Square

You are correct, I just assumed... there are more pit tickets too.... fuck I want those! but it would be a big risk of losing my money spent on some already pretty good seats.
Yeah I feel similarly... if I could just trade in my seat (in Orch 3 Row A) and pay the difference, it'd be one thing. But I'm not gonna buy a new ticket without being sure I wouldn't eat the cost of the old one.
-

I was actually surprised my friend was kind of receptive to the idea of doing that, but then I told him where we are sitting which are still pretty solid seats and he agreed that it would end up costing a good chunk of change to make that swap. Sucks, I really wish I was sitting in the pit, but just a hard cost to justify at this point.
-

Yeah... it kinda gnaws at me a bit that I did it. BUT.. at the end of the day I'm looking at it like this. Both tickets combined are just a bit over the Platinum meet and greet price. Yeah, I don't get the meet and greet but I get that quality seat ticket. I've spent lots of money getting from Cali to NYC for this show, it's a once in a lifetime for me probably. So, whats a few more bucks to ensure I have phenominal seats? Just my thoughts... like I said, it bugs me a lil, but not enough to not pull the trigger. What I do HOPE though, is that someone can get the use out of my old ticket. The thought of it going to waste is the worst part of the scenario.

If I was in your shoes, I would have done it too! Totally worth that extra experience when you are already putting so much effort to see the show. Plus if you got the meet and greet package youd have to get there early and cut out of time from the pre-game, and let's be serious, meet DTF or DT? :lol

Yo just a general tip for out-of-towners planning to use public transportation... always wise to check https://web.mta.info/weekender.html and see what screwy changes they have going on with the subway. There's always at least one line that's garbage on weekends.

I would imagine you'll be fine, doors at 7 show at 8, id imagine its over before 11, maybe closer to 10:30. But those are just my best guesses.
Thanks...I was thinking/(hoping) 11:00 at the latest
CT was done by like 10:15. We fucked around after the gig, one of us even made a half-assed attempt to get over near where the tour bus is, then we stood and chatted until the traffic cleared out (and I mean cleared out) and I was STILL out of the parking lot before 11:00.
-
Or they can just ask me as I work for the MTA.
You SIR.. are my new best friend!

I've never ridden on the Metro North line before. How is it? Comfort wise, station conditions, etc?

I'll see everyone there :tup

Wooo one more rebook and saved more money, saved about 100 bucks over the course of 3 rebookings this week.
So is everyone going to the Brickyard Gastropub from 3-6 tomorrow? What are all the out of towners planning for the rest of the weekend in the big Apple?
Also, safe travels to everyone making there way to the city this weekend, weather looks to be good!
-
I'm undecided between the below two bars for early afternoon libations (tiebreaker will probably be who has a better draft list as of tonight). I'll then be making my way over to Brickyard for 3 or 4.

I've only ever done round trips out of New Haven and West Haven so I have no complaints, as New Haven and Grand Central are obviously well maintained and West Haven is brand new. Obviously you get the caveats of mass transport (nasty bathrooms, sardeen packing during peak) but it's good for the most part, especially now with the M8s.

Victoria gets home from her Ireland trip tonight. I really enjoyed the show in CT, much more than I thought I would, and I'd love to see this album played again before they retire it. I'm going to see if I can convince her to go to NYC tomorrow.

Awesome, there are some ridiculously cheap tickets on stub hub if you are looking for a cheap evening, or obviously there are some other really good seats at face value.

I happened to be doing work in Midtown earlier, so I took a walk by RCMH.

Yeah. I saw there's still a bunch toward the back of the orchestra for like $65-$75. I was thinking of grabbing some of those. I've never sat up on any of the balconies in RCMH. Some of those are in the $30 range. A day to the city is going to end up costing a few hundred bucks anyway, so spending some extra coin on the seats won't make much of a difference.

Shit seats, but there are seats for $8 on stubhub. Just saying since you already went once. Normally for me if it's a second showing I may take shit seats to save money on one of the nights since like you said, just getting in/out of the city and spending the day is costly.

Was thinking about doing the same thing Chino, but my dad would yell at me for pissing away my birthday money on a train ticket.

I just walked through the Rockefeller Center station and it's really nice there. The same with Grand Central. I love walking through them.

Wish I could've seen Penn, from what I understand it was the grandest of them all until they all fell into disrepair and it was replaced with this quasi-utilitarian nightmare.
I took the subway to Borough Hall and thought all the Manhattan stops looked pretty decent. Borough Hall was a bit in disrepair, though.
Anyway I'll quit jamming up your discussion with trains and hypotheticals.
-
Grand Central is beautiful, but Penn Station is a dump.
Chino, yes upper balcony seats is what I mean by shit. Didn't really go through the seats on stub hub, but the cheapest are usually the crappiest.

Borough Hall is my stop for work when I take the 4/5 train during the work day. I usually take the R from Jay Street to and from work though.

Texted Victoria after she landed about spending the day in NYC on Saturday. I got "idk, man. We can talk about it when I get home". Translation: "no".

I'd take it 'cause that's better than my seat in that section (Row A, not aisle), but then there'd still be an unused ticket floating around. Doesn't seem fair. (Plus I'm still maybe going to convince myself to spring for up front.)

Yeah, but with all the fees it's more like $150, ya know... 'twould be unwise. At this point I'm kind of like waiting for time to make the decision for me.

Found a taker for my ticket and a mutually agreeable result... now I'm in the pit! Woo!
Have fun at the meetup folks... as a native Pittsburgher I will be watching the Pens-Rangers playoff game at 3, and I think we can all understand it is in the best interest of myself and NY sports fans that I do so from the comfort of my apartment.

Is that what he said? I thought he yelled "where's Mike Portnoy?"
-
I thought he said "Where's Mike Portnoy?" too.
Anyway, awesome show. First time seeing the band and they were amazing. Was great to see so many people turn out.
-
Yeah, the show was great. The sound was pretty much perfect where I was, but I know people in other areas were complaining about the mix. I just wish I had gotten myself more familiar with the new album beforehand.
-
Awesome show and really fun meet up with everyone. Mix wasn't perfect for me, but not bad enough to complain about it really. Venue was great, ushers were patrolling, but I enjoyed trolling them. Specifically doing something to get their attention, turn my phone on or stand in the isle, and then when they'd come yell at me I'd act like I couldn't hear them yelling "What?!" just to have the guy give up on trying to tell me what to do.
I also thought the guy yelled "Where is MP?" and someone followed up with something about MM (couldn't make out exactly what was said),
-
Yeah word on social media is that someone shouted "WHERE'S Mike Portnoy" and people booed and someone else shouted "Get over it!"
I wasn't there but am interested in hearing how it went. I saw some reviews around the internet complaining about the sound quality as well as suggesting that a large number of people were ejected from the venue for refusing to stay seated. Definitely want to hear the real story behind this.
BTW, Happy Birthday axeman, what are you like 35 now? :p
-
the MM guy was right next to me, and he just yelled "MM Rules!"
I got the impression that some of the reaction to the MP comment was due to the inappropriateness of bringing up his name at the show, but I'm sure some of it was a us/them
great show! :metal
-
Well, I must say that was one of, if not the top DT show i've been too. So happy I sprung for the second seat in the pit. The sound/ mix was excellent and Everyone kicked ass, especially James. Had an excellent time at the meet before the gig, great turnout of fun peeps! The after party wasn't bad either. The Norwiegen contingent tried to outlast us, but we stood strong :yarr great seeng Marc and Aaron again, and meeting everyone else! Also, thanks to Prog for setting up the meet! Well done, Sir!!! :hat
-
Damn. Reading through this thread has me PUMPED for the LA show next month :metal

Honestly was kind of a non issue. Someone, likely drunk, screamed something stupid at a concert and the response scream was perfect, none of it drew a huge reaction from the crowd really.
The security never threatened to kick me out, I didn't stand the entire time, but got up often and purposely stood in the aisle at times just to see how much I could get away with, but I was mostly friendly to them and they were to me (besides somewhat trolling them and making work :lol). Maybe my seating area they just were a bit less harsh though. I managed to get a bunch of pics and video clips pretty easily.
Also, thanks for the fan club for setting that up! :metal :metal
-
clearly JLB is the MVP. almost no downtime. freaking amazing!
-
Yeah, aside from one or two of the higher and/or more shouted parts he sounded pretty damn good last night.
-
I thought the sound was muddy, but DT rarely sounds particularly good in my experience. I'm also comparing that to CT which was one of the best sounding shows I've ever been to.
Those ushers were dicks. Fuck those people.
I thought James sounded good both nights, but there's kind of an asterisk there. They're using a shit-ton of backing tracks and that includes much of the harder vocal parts. I understand having the orchestra and choir sequenced, and even background vocals. I won't hold that against them. They went well beyond that, though. There were times when JLB was singing background to canned leads.
Great finally meeting some DTFers, and hanging with long-acquainted ones. Shame I didn't get to do the after-show thing, but a 0700 trek to LGA is really a bummer.
-

Thank you. It was also John, from the fan club, and Victoria who both had a hand it in as well. Once John heard I was thinking about putting something together, he contacted me about making it a fan club thing which, of course, I thought was great. Victoria and I were working on finding the right place. After Valhalla was less than accommodating, we decided on Brickyard. Those nachos were pretty damn good. How were the wings, Aaron?
Marc, you were well within my sight. I have to say you were probably having the best time there. :lol I was trying to get your attention.
I ran into Axeman during the intermission. The sound was good but the mix definitely wasn't optimal from where I was sitting. James' voice was, for the most part, drowned out by the instruments. Even some of JP's solos weren't as clear as they normally are. I think the drums and keys took over as far as sound goes. What does everyone else think?
El Barto, I didn't do the after show either. I was exhausted and it's 2 hours of public transportation home for me, so I got home around 2.
-
I could hear everything, but there was no fidelity to it. In CT when the whole band was playing you could still hear which patch JR was using, or which cymbals MM was hitting. Last night you just heard keys and cymbals, but no real definition at all.
-
yeah, the meetup was great and good to hang with some again and to meet a number for first time.
-
Went to the show last night. Dream theater is my favorite band, but I do have a few critiques of the night. I really didn't get a good vibe from the meet and greet. I understand the band has a lot of people to meet, and they have to keep the line moving along. But outside of Mike and Jordan, I got the vibe that the band really didn't want to be there. For the $360~ I spent, I was underwhelmed by their attitudes and a bit disappointed. I'm also kind of upset that the m&g group didn't get access to pit seats. I just feel like when fans pay almost 3x as much for a ticket they should have their choice of the front 5 rows.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the show itself. Mangini was on fire, Jordan got a lot of love from the crowd. JP was incredibly passionate with his work. James sang very well and I heard few, if any mistakes.
-

Yeah, y'all kind of got a raw deal on that one. All of the people wearing laminates were behind me. I understand why they don't want to set aside all of the very best seats for the people with the money to buy them, but there's certainly a compromise that can be made there.
That said, it could be worse. The Who had 8 or so different levels of VIP packages (precious metals and gemstones). I gave my extra good seats to some gals that had paid for a package deal and given seats in the second section back.
-
Really glad I sprung for that pit seat. What a show! Definitely my best DT experience yet.
The sound was what sound is that close to the stage; I was fine with it. The crowd was a bit odd at times (the "Where's Portnoy," of course, which was really just awkward more than anything... I heard a yell of "We love you, Mangini!" that seemed to settle things and move on). I had zero complaints about the ushers but maybe that's just me; I don't get what the big deal is. I never have my phone out at concerts anyway, I guess.
But the band... damn. I thought JLB *killed*. I found myself paying very close attention to what he was doing... he was definitely taking care with how he was placing things, breaths, etc., but at the same time just cutting loose when necessary. Really nailed the delivery and emotion.
Also found the visuals very strong! I was worried it would be CGI cheese, but that was used sparingly and (mostly) tastefully. The more stylized stuff -- especially involving silhouettes and recurring color motifs for certain characters -- was fantastic I thought.
-

Some more thoughts on the concert from me, now that I'm back home and can type on my laptop:
- Not only was it my first time seeing DT, but it was my first time in NY. It was pretty cool seeing Radio City for the first time. Gorgeous venue.
- Before the show, I was walking around Radio City and saw the band's crew unloading their equipment. I recognized JP's guitar tech talking to someone. At the show, I saw JP's wife (Rena, I think?) and then realized I was sitting near the band's manager. A lot of "celeb" sitings. :lol
- The show's visuals were amazing, from the graphics to the lights.
- The sound was pretty much on par with most other concerts I've been too. A little loud, a little muddy, but as long as you knew what to listen for, all was fine.
- Everyone was on fire. JLB was a beast.
- The live setting confirmed some of my own personal thoughts on the album: Amazing first act, but I personally think it could have been cut by a few minutes. Strong start to the second act, a little weak in the middle, and then an amazing finish.
- I noticed a lot of females at the concert, including an old lady who looked to be around 70. :metal
There was one hilarious moment at intermission when I was walking to the bathroom and heard a girl yelling at her boyfriend, "Look... I don't want you to say I'm not participating in new activities, but this is not my thing! I can't believe you dragged me to this!"
I felt bad for her, worse for him. :mehlin
- I felt the highlights were the first few songs, A Life Left Behind -> Chosen (maybe THE best stretch of the concert), A New Beginning -> The Road to Revolution, Hymn of a Thousand Voices -> Astonishing.
Overall, great show and I can't wait to see the guys again. If they do another North American leg and play old songs, my wallet is going to suffer for it. :rollin
-
If they do another North American leg and play old songs, my wallet is going to suffer for it. :rollin
But what sweet suffering it would be! fingers crossed another leg is announced and this happens. I don't want to regret missing this show.
-
I think I might have liked the Wallingford Show a little more then the RCMH show. I felt like the mix wasn't anywhere near as good as the CT show, and there were a lot of times when James became inaudible.
My girlfriend missed pretty much the entire concert. She just got back from a 12 day Ireland trip the night before (the reason she was apprehensive to go in the first place) and she was really jet-lagged. She got about half way through The Gift of Music and was out cold until The Astonishing :rollin :rollin

That's interesting (particularly the emboldened part). I saw the show twice in London and don't recall thinking JLB was never singing the main line. (I do remember him sounding very poor in places, though.) Can you recall specific parts?

I was also there the first night in London, and don't remember this either. Maybe it's something that has been tweaked as the tour went on, but I think I would have been disappointed if he wasn't singing the main vocal line.

:lol
I was going to ask what her take on the show was...I guess that answers it :lol
I can't blame her at all for it. I've been there. I was in the second row when DT co-headlined Gigantour at Jones Beach and I slept straight through Megadeath's set.
-
:rollin wow to sleep at a metal concert is quite a task! But those seats at Radio City are very comfy.
-
Yeah, I noticed the occasional piped in vocals, but I didn't ever think it was the main line.
Oh, and props to whoever it was that showed up to the meetup in a "Make Ravenskill Great Again" t shirt.

That was me. Best $12 I ever spent. I thought of doing it on Friday afternoon and contacted a local shop and had it in my hands Saturday morning.

That's interesting (particularly the emboldened part). I saw the show twice in London and don't recall thinking JLB was never singing the main line. (I do remember him sounding very poor in places, though.) Can you recall specific parts?
I don't have nearly enough familiarity with the songs to know exactly where it was (there was one part in particular that surprised me both nights). Moreover, videos of the performance are hard to come by on YT, so it'd be tough to track down. However, it was noticeable enough that others could probably point it out.
I do know that (at RCMH, at least) a great deal of the "oh shit, he just shanked my girlfriend" scream was canned.
I did check some videos from Europe where JLB sounded pretty terrible. It could also be the case that they revised the sequencing to help the guy out somewhere after those dates.
-
Thanks for coming back on that. It's not important, really. I am certainly in the camp of thinking that all the main lines should be sung, though, and tape usage should be minimal. Wrong show for that, I think.

Yeah, like I say I understand the necessity given what they're trying to pull off. I just recall being surprised when there were multiple lines that he wasn't singing, aside from the backing vox. Most people here aren't exactly looking for flaws, so I can see how it might go unnoticed. Perhaps now that it's being discussed people will see where I'm referring to. Add to that, almost all of us are getting great seats now for these shows, making it a bit easier.
-
The only time I recall piped-in vocals raising a note of concern for me was on at least one chorus of "Moment of Betrayal." I still think he was singing what would arguably be the lead vocal line -- the lower melody line as opposed to the high harmony part -- but it was the one time that it felt he was singing "along" rather than obviously singing lead with the canned vocals providing backup.
I recall being fairly impressed by him on the titular, climactic phrase of "Last Farewell" -- but maybe I was just hoodwinked. Even so, I recall him holding the note long enough to overlap with the (obviously canned) scream in such a way that sure felt legit.

Yeah. We decided at 10:30am-ish to head down to the city. I paid $65 (per seat) for seats toward the back of the orchestra. I was probably about the same distance away as my Wallingford seats. There were seats further back in the orchestra going in the $40 range and there was a lot of stuff to the sides of the balconies in the $20-$30 range. I saw individual seats on Stubhub for as low as $8!
-
and not to be a jerk, but I was relieved to find out they didn't bring an orchestra. I was so pissed my wife gave her blessing for me to do score and I passed cause I said Oakdale was good enough. When the DVD came out I was so pissed I didn't go.
If that happened again, I would have been rippin cause she told me I could go solo if I wanted. Didn't want to spend money we don't really have to spend.
Now we wait and see if they do record a show at all and if so if its with or without an orchestra.
-
I'd be fine without an orchestra, the presentation with the stage show was pretty awesome.
-
I thought the show was incredible. James and Jordan were great, Petrucci was god-like, and Myung and Mangini delivered as always. The production was visually stunning. I'm kicking myself for not going Friday night. The only negative was the crowd...I heard someone yell Maiden and I swear I heard something about Metallica as well, but the where's Portnoy yell was idiotic. That was completely disrespectful to Mangini (who played his a** off by the way) and I'm sure Portnoy would agree and would probably be embarrassed by the antics of a (I would hope) drunken moron. Another gripe was that there needed to be a consensus on the stand/sit issue. I don't care either way but it got pretty heated at times with people arguing during the show.

In NYC? While nobody seemed to know what to do, I though everybody was well behaved about it. Wallingford was the complete opposite, though. I've never seen people so belligerently opposed to people standing at a show before. At RCMH I had no problem following the leads of others. The only exception was when I stood up for ANB outro solo because I knew what was coming, and I halfheartedly apologized to the guy behind me but told him he'd be well advised to stand up too.
-
It definitely depends on where you are sitting as to whether you had problems or not with ushers or standers. It seemed by me everyone stood and sat at the same time like we all knew to do it, no issues at all with that. Sitting kind of sucked though, I wanted to rock out.

Personally, I like to sit when its a seated show as opposed to an open floor DT show where I can actually move around instead of being in the middle of a row with no room. But I just go with the flow. People want to stand I'll stand. No problem.

I just like rocking out, head banging, jumping, moving around with the music. I think GA pits with seats in the back are the best of both worlds for rock concerts.

Same i think, i've seen them 3 times on this tour, but really i don't know (almost all the time i was watching the band , except nomac tracks ofc) i prefer 1 LED.

Those are definitely different. Here is A New Beginning in Italy

Looks like the screen weren't working :lol that's terrible as they added a lot to the show
-
Europe did not get the same stage show?
We did, I think it was a technical problem they weren't able to solve during the European tour. I remember I've seen those chess visuals before, must have been at the first Amsterdam show. But I admit I can't really remember because I was watching the band most of the time. In later shows they were gone (got lost along the way...) But with the band rocking out and the light show it wasn't a big problem for me to see ANB without the visuals though the (suddenly) black screens felt a bit odd.

Fortunate coincidence...
Sitting next to me and my son on the floor at Radio City was a group of 3 woman (I know - seemed kinda weird to me, too...). In the first half, a drunk group of guys sitting behind us would not stop talking. One of the women turned and asked them to be quite but they persisted. I made the request more emphatically and they stayed quite for the remainder of the half.
At intermission, the woman thanked me for speaking up - then told me she was JR's wife, sitting with their daughter and a friend! Turns out Myung's family was further down the row.
After the show, she handed me and my son aftershow passes so we got to meet the band - including her telling Jordan the story, which got me a "thank you" and hug from JR :tup
Great show - great band - great family - awesome night!!! :metal

Question for people who had the meet n' greet...
Were they letting you bring stuff in to get signed? Like a guitar?

Nice video by the way. It popped up on my Youtube feed

Awesome story Bruck! Kudos to you, that's what you call Karma :tup As far as sitting/standing, I sat only during orchestral passages for the most part. Rest of the show I was pretty much standing. I had a 20 year old kid behind me and it was his first concert EVER, and he was standing having a great time so I wasn't worried. Plus, I'm short. I had a girl in row 2 seat next to me, 40 something blonde...she was frikken rocking out the whole show and really knew the material!! After the show I asked the young guy what he thought... you could just see the gleam in his eyes to go with the huge smile! Barto, on that scream you're talking about, I really paid attention to it and from where I was sitting it sure seemed like the scream was about 75% live and 25% backing track... I was watching when he quit and the lower volumed backing continued for half a second or so. =the live part had a lot of punch for sure! Again, maybe it was my vantage point. Overall sound to me was just awesome, one of the most well mixed shows I've heard. For sure it was the best mixed DT show, and it was like my 11th or so DT show.

Definitely cool! People who are rude like that need a good smack upside the head.
I sat next to MP's wife and kids in 09 in NYC and had a brief conversation with her. Very nice woman.

Incredible. On the first night in London there was no visuals at all for ANB. I thought that was a bit strange. The whole chess thing is a really good idea though
-
They were probably still working on them.
-
I think I remember reading that the computers crashed and they lost the visuals temporarily.
-
Could be worse, could have gotten the blue screen of death
-
I remember someone taking a group photo at the bar before departing for the show. Anyone have that?

That was the fan club, was wondering that as well since I didn't see it on their facebook page.

I believe it was John from the Fan Club. I'll message him to see if he has it.

Anyway.... four years ago today DTF was rocking Radio City and I had a blast with the before and after show meet ups. Great times and I really miss those days of being able to have a bunch of people fly into a city for a concert

Yeah, that was a good meetup. Worked out well for me since I got to hang out with Stadler and Chino (and very briefly Tick) the night before in CT, and all the New Yorkers and people who flew in that night. Got fairly toasted, to boot. I thought the show was a bit of a letdown, though. Particularly because security was so obnoxious (I put that on the band, Petrucci, though).

Funny how you put that on Petrucci (and I don't think you are wrong there) while his wife was one of the few who was standing and getting into it at times. I wonder if security ever yelled at her during that show as they constantly did to me :lol I do think I enjoyed the meet up more than the actual show as well for the same reason. Its no fun when you can't stand and rock out at a metal concert.
