Title: Tom Bombadil's Roulette v2. FINAL RESULTS
Post by: Tom Bombadil on October 27, 2015, 01:11:50 PM
Hey guys! Hope you are as excited as I am for another roulette!
I'm thinking this will be very similar to my last one: 8 rounds, a couple themes here and there, and no limit on participants.

A couple things about my (very strange) tastes:
I'm not all that into prog metal anymore. I certainly still like some bands, but I feel like the majority these days is super bland and predictable. I'm definitely not doing this roulette to discover more Dream Theater clones. So feel free to send some prog metal, but try to make sure there's something in it that makes it unique.
I'm totally fine with harsh vocals, but I'm usually pretty picky about them. My favorite harsh vocal bands are Opeth and Meshuggah, so hopefully that can give you a little help in that regard.
I said this last time and nobody seemed to listen, but I'm really not big on instrumentals. Obviously there are some exceptions, but the odds are not in your favor by sending an instrumental.
Totally cool with Jazz (mostly big band), but not all that into classical.
Definitely not a fan of power metal or hair metal.

SUBMISSIONS:
YouTube is fine, but try to make it good quality. Spotify is also fine if you prefer, or you can email me at phil.minsker@yahoo.com if you want to send a file.
Try to keep the songs reasonable in length. 15 minutes should be the maximum, but remember that I don't have all that much time to listen to your songs (shooting for one round per week), so I might not be able to fully digest a 12-15 minute song.

PARTICIPANTS:

Newly Banned:

Obviously, this is not everything I've ever heard, but covers most of what I'm familiar with. There's also a lot of bands that I've checked out and didn't really like, so if you notice some hugely popular DTF band not on the list, I probably already tried it and wasn't a fan.

Also, for those who participated last time, I think I'll be grading songs a little harsher than last time. The gap between great songs and good good songs was only like .5-1 points, and I think it should be a little bigger. So don't be super upset if you get a somewhat low score.

Alright, that should cover everything, so if you'd like to participate just drop a comment below and get sending! First round will be open, so send whatever you feel like.

Good luck to all!

Was the last one head to head approach with six participants or am I mistaken?

Anyway, I'll sit this one out I guess.

Nope, last one was 8 rounds, 12 participants. No head to head. I think I know which one you're thinking of, cause I remember participating in one like that, but it wasn't mine

15 minutes, but I would recommend 10 and under, just because a bunch of 15 minute songs would be a lot to digest in a week.

A couple things about my (very strange) tastes:
Have you ever tried to make a top 50 list? I've found the process clears up lots of doubts about one's tastes - you can make one here (https://topsters.net/) if you may :P

Count me in.

You sure meet more of my tastes than Parama according to those bans, but I don't like to send you some replica band of something you already know like you said yourself. One question, you already know whether you'll be doing themed rounds or if it's all open rounds?

Yeah, I'll probably try to do a top 50 list soon. I came up with one before, but by the time I wanted to sign up it was already way different :lol

It won't be all open, but I haven't exactly come up with all the themes yet. At least 2 rounds will be open, maybe more if I get lazy.

Also, what's your stance on electronic music and spoken words in songs?

I don't have a problem with either. I don't really listen to a lot of electronic, but there's some stuff here and there that I really enjoy. And spoken word is kind of hit and miss. In the right context it can work really nicely, but other times it can feel really out of place.

So yeah, trying to figure out what I like can be darn near impossible :lol

I'm not totally sure at the moment, but they'll be really basic. Sad song, happy song, etc. and I'll probably do some sort of "any combination of songs under 15 minutes" thing for the last round.

Still looking to fill a few more spots if anyone wants to join in on the fun.

Depends what you call a "drum solo". I'm totally cool with like an extended drum fill (a la YYZ), but a long Moby Dick style drum solo bores me, which is weird because I play the drums :lol

Just wanted to reiterate that I'm grading songs a bit harsher than I have in the past, so if you think you got a really low score, it really isn't that low. There weren't any songs I disliked this round. Just some I liked more than others :P

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Parama: Kimbra - Settle Down
Yeah, this was a bit of a risky pick, but I encourage risky picks cause that's what makes these fun. This song was pretty enjoyable, but not really my cup of tea. There were a couple of really cool aspects, however. I thought the chorus was great, and definitely my favorite part of the song, and the singer is clearly very talented. I wasn't huge on the verses, though. Definitely not a bad song, and you'll probably think this is a really low score, but this will probably be a fairly common score. I grade hard.
Score: 5.5

Scorpion: Speaking to Stones - My Final Sin
Yeah, I had some trouble finding your first song. Wasn't on YouTube or Spotify or any other streaming service I could find, so had to go with the second song. I really liked the intro of this, and I enjoyed how they threw in those clean guitar parts. I found the rest to be a little generic, though. The guitar solo at the end was impressive, but I didn't really find it necessary, and I think I might've liked the song more if it ended at 7 minutes, instead of coming back in for the last solo. Not a bad song by any means, it just felt kind of ordinary.
Score: 6

Train of Naught: Gojira - The Gift of Guilt
I got a couple Gojira tunes in my last roulette, and I had pretty similar feelings about this one. I have no problem with the heaviness, but I didn't find it all that memorable, and there were times where I struggled to recall how the song went in my head. My favorite part would probably be the chorus, as I found that to be the part that stuck with me the most, especially the guitar line there (and in the intro). Overall, I liked this one a bit more than the ones in my last roulette, but I think a lot of the song just kind of felt like "standard heavy metal song".
Score: 6.5

Sacul: Riverside - Hybrid Times
I'll admit, this was definitely better than most of the prog metal I've heard recently. The first couple of minutes were pretty excellent. Good balance between the instruments/vocals. I felt it kind of drag a bit towards the end, though, especially in the long instrumental section (other than the awesome guitar solo), and there were times where it got a bit predictable. Definitely a lot of things to like in this song, but I didn't think it really stood out that much above most good prog metal.
Score: 6.5

Senecadawg: Susanne Sundfor - Kamikaze
I definitely don't have a problem with you sending some poppy tracks in this roulette. While I still consider myself a "prog" dude, I can enjoy well done pop songs just as much. This song was really catchy. I found myself whistling it at random times throughout the day :lol . However, I didn't think there was anything about it that really blew me away, and in the end I think it falls somewhere in the dreaded "good but not great" category. The outro also seemed a bit out of place, but the rest of the song was solid.
Score: 7

Tyrias: Azedia - Agony
This song was super interesting. It had a pretty crazy mix of instruments/electronics, and it always kept me guessing as to what will happen next, which I really liked. There were a couple things I wasn't too big on. The vocals were nice, but I wish they were a little more varied and less repetitive. I also wasn't a huge fan of the "I, I, I" parts. Everything from around 4:30 to the end was excellent, though. By far this was the most interesting and least predictable song of the round.
Score: 7.5

Splent: Miles Davis - So What
I've definitely heard the main line in this tune before, but I never listened to it in full. I definitely should have. This was a 9 minute track that felt like 4 minutes. The rhythm section was really solid, and there were a couple top notch solos in there. The only little critique I have is that there were a few too many solos for my taste. In jazz, I tend to prefer the songs that don't have as much improv soloing. Here there really wasn't that many, but just a tiny but much. Great song overall.
Score: 7.5

Shadow Ninja: The White Buffalo - Wish it was True
This song was simple, but very beautiful. Strong lyrics and great emotion in the vocals really set this song apart. I also enjoyed the background strings a lot. This doesn't happen very often, but I don't really have anything to nitpick about :lol . Best song of the round.
Score: 8.5

STANDINGS
1. Shadow Ninja - 8.5
2. Splent - 7.5
3. Tyrias - 7.5
4. Senecadawg - 7
5. Sacul - 6.5
6. Train of Naught - 6.5
7. Scorpion - 6
8. Parama - 5.5

Time to start getting into some themes, which again will be super basic. I don't want to restrict you guys too much.
Round 2 theme will be anything uplifting/happy. Start sending whenever, and hopefully results shouldn't take more than a week.

I will be out of town until next tuesday (pretty late), so I probably won't be able to send until then for the next round. (unless I know the theme for round 3 within 2 hours, that is).
Sry about that, feel free to just continue grading without my song and then I'll just send you mine afterwards.

They're finally here!

ROUND 2 RESULTS

Tyrias: Caravan Palace - Jolie Coquine
Another very interesting submission. The easiest way to describe this song is just "weird" :lol The main melody sounded kind of familiar (maybe it was in a commercial or something). Overall, I thought the instrumentation was pretty cool, but the vocal parts were not my favorite. This one didn't really click, but keep the interesting songs coming!
Score: 5.5

Scorpion: The Cat Empire - Fishies
Yeah, this definitely was not an "ordinary" song. Pretty interesting blend of genres/instruments. I thought the trumpet parts were pretty killer. The vocals were alright, but nothing special, and I wasn't too big on the keyboard solo. Good song, but it didn't really connect with me.
Score: 6

Sacul: Marketa Irglova - Time Immemorial
I'm having a hard time deciding on this song. Sometimes a think its awesome, other times not so much. Not sure what to make of that. The guitar was easily my favorite part, simple but effective and great tone. I think the vocals are why I'm so indecisive. Sometimes they sound really good, and at other times I feel like they drag it down. Maybe more listens will make it click, but for now its in the dreaded good but not great range.
Score: 6.5

Shadow Ninja: Homestuck - Moonsetter
Very bright and catchy song. This is one I would be whistling all day after hearing it. However, I thought this song worked best as background music while I was doing something else. I guess that makes sense, given that it was a soundtrack. Fun song overall.
Score: 6.5

Senecadawg: Sound of Contact - Pale Blue Dot
I really liked the instrumentation in this song, especially the guitar parts in the chorus, which were pretty excellent. The vocals were hit and miss. I thought they were fine in the verses, and most of the chorus, but for some reason every time he said "Pale Blue Dot", I was like "bleh". This song was definitely a grower, so maybe that will part will also grow in time.
Score: 7

Parama: Thank You Scientist - Carnival
This was a pretty cool song. I really liked how they mixed in some horns, it gave it a pretty unique sound. The chorus was probably my favorite part, and I really got a Coheed & Cambria vibe from it. I usually liked all the different instruments, but the violin solo felt a little out of place. Other than that, great song.
Score: 7.5

Splent: Triumph - Magic Power
With the name "Magic Power", I was totally expecting some cheese here, but that wasn't the case. The song opened up with an awesome guitar line, which I think might be my favorite part of the whole song. I don't have a whole lot else to say about this one, it was just solid from beginning to end.
Score 7.5

Train of Naught: The Dear Hunter - King of Swords(Reversed)
Wow. I swear I tried checking this band out once before, but I don't remember it sounding anything at all like this. Totally not what I was expecting. This song was super infectious and uplifting, great pick for this round. The verses gave me a bit of a Talking Heads vibe (certainly not a bad thing). Overall, this was quite a pleasant surprise, and I'll definitely have to check this band out more.
Score: 8

SCORES:
1. Shadow Ninja - 15
1. Splent - 15
3. Train of Naught - 14.5
4. Senecadawg - 14
5. Parama - 13
5. Sacul - 13
5. Tyrias - 13
8. Scorpion - 12

Another good round guys. Keep it up!

I'm gonna leave Round 3 open, because I just don't feel like coming up with a theme :lol
Feel free start sending whenever.

no, lower my score because if you don't like the violin solo (literal best part of the entire album) then we can't be friends  :lol

and yeah TYS does have a bit in common with Coheed (though i still feel vocals are way different but w/e) and i saw both of them in concert together last month to boot, personally i prefer TYS overall but coheed has the best songs between the two easily

Oh btw you're right, they don't really sound much like they do on King of Swords, I think the closest they get on this album is with "If All Goes Well", but Act II is far superior IMO.

Ha enough trolling, feast upon some results.

ROUND 3 RESULTS

Parama: Lorde - Buzzcut Season - I don't have a problem with pop music, but this just didn't do a whole lot for me. It wasn't really bad in any way, but I didn't think there was anything in particular that made me want to come back to it, and honestly there were a few times where I couldn't remember how the song went like 15 minutes after listening to it. Still better than a lot of stuff they play on the radio, but not really my thing.
Grade: 5.5

Shadow Ninja: Mew - Water Slides - I was not into this a all on the first listen, but it grew a lot over time. Still not my favorite, but I like it a lot more after a couple of listens. It creates a nice atmosphere for sure. Maybe it will continue to grow, but for now it's still in that average range.
Grade: 6.5

Splent: Enchant - The Great Divide - This kind of felt like one of those "standard prog" songs. There was nothing really bad about it, but also nothing that I felt set it apart from a lot of prog music, and there were a couple times I could feel my concentration slipping. The vocals (is it Neal Morse? Sounds like him) are kind of hit and miss. I like them in the chorus, but not so much in the verses. Overall it's sort of stuck in that good but not great category.
Grade: 6.5

Train of Naught: Protest the Hero - C'est La Vie - Everything about this song was solid. The instrumentation, vocals, production, you name it. That said, in my opinion it didn't really have anything that took it from "solid" to "fantastic". Fun song, enjoyable to listen to, but nothing extraordinary.
Grade: 7

Sacul: Bent Knee - Being Human - Very interesting track. I had no idea where it was going after the short intro, and was pleasantly surprised by an almost Steve Hackett like riff. Probably my favorite part of the song. The vocalist was very impressive, especially at the end with those crazy high notes. Very solid tune.
Grade: 7

Tyrias: ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Will You Smile Again for Me - Another interesting submission you got here. Loved the intro, it was pretty great. And then it completely changes tone, but to a part I like equally well, with some awesome muted trumpets in there. It then totally changes again, although I can't say I like this part as much. But it does a good job of building off this part, eventually coming full circle back to the awesome intro. Cool song!
Grade: 7.5

Senecadawg: Glen Hansard - Bird of Sorrow - This is a super soft, heartfelt piece. And it was pretty powerful. I really liked the build up throughout the song, starting with just piano and vocals and adding in all the rest. I also liked how it brought it back down after the climax, in fact I think the ending might be my favorite part. Great resolution to a beautiful piece. And it keeps getting better with more listens.
Grade: 8

Scorpion: Leprous - Forced Entry - Good news. Apparently I don't hate good music! Yeah, this song was awesome. It had so many different tones and kept me guessing the whole time. At first I thought it would be djent, then it went almost poppy, and then really proggy, and this is all in the first 3 minutes. Also as a drummer, some of the drum parts were mind-blowing in it's level of difficulty. The song was over 10 minutes long, but felt a lot less than that, and I never felt my attention slipping. I think that's proof that I really liked it.
Grade: 8.5

STANDINGS
1. Senecadawg - 22
2. Shadow Ninja - 21.5
2. Splent - 21.5
2. Train of Naught - 21.5
5. Tyrias - 20.5
5. Scorpion - 20.5
7. Sacul - 20
8. Parama - 18.5

Standings are still incredibly tight. Still anyone's game. Also please correct me if a made an arithmetic error, as it's bound to happen at some point.

Next round is basically open, because I won't judge how well it fits the theme, since it's completely subjective, but just send a song you like to listen to when driving or running or anything of that nature. And that was quite the run-on sentence.

I can live with 7.5. My next rounds song is more for a really energetic walk than for running I guess, but most of the music I listen to is really simple metal or electronic music, don't think that would work in this context

Here we are:

ROUND 4 RESULTS

Tyrias: Queens of the Stone Age - I Sat by the Ocean
I've heard a couple Queens of the Stone Age songs before, and this one pretty much fits right in with the other ones I've heard. Not bad, but it's kind of just "there". There's nothing I dislike, but the repetitiveness of the main riff makes me start to zone out after a couple minutes and I lose focus.
Grade: 6

Senecadawg: Gotye - Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You
Your description of the song was pretty spot on. It feels exactly like a night-time, rainy, in the city investigation type thing. However, I noticed that I tended to enjoy the song more as kind of background music while I was doing something else (driving would fall into that category, so it definitely fits the theme), as opposed to when I was solely listening to the song. So there's definitely a "time and place" where this song works great, but other times when it doesn't, if that makes any sense whatsoever.
Grade: 6.5

Train of Naught: Alter Bridge - Cry of Achilles
Ah, another band that I briefly listened to, and figured they were just another "DT clone". Well maybe they still are, but this song in particular definitely isn't. Very infectious beat and riffs, with solid vocals to go along. I especially liked the parts with the cleaner sounding guitar. Very fun song.
Grade: 7

Shadow Ninja: The Plot In You - My Old Ways
This definitely fit the theme. Solid driving song, fun and enjoyable to listen to. I really liked the intro, how it just exploded out of the gate. Overall its one of those songs that has nothing I dislike, but nothing really extraordinary to push it into that next level. I know I tend to say that a lot :P
Grade: 7

Scorpion: Caligula's Horse - A Gift to Afterthought
All of the songs this round were so consistent that I'm running out of things to say. This is another one this round that can best be described as "really enjoyable to listen to". There was nothing here that I disliked, and I lot that was really good. Solid song in just about every way.
Grade: 7

Sacul: The Mars Volta - Son et Lumiere/Intertiatic Esp
Definitely heard of this band before, but I don't think I ever checked them out before. The intro was really cool, and easily my favorite part of the song. The rest was still very good, but I like the intro so much that it was a little disappointing to be honest. Still a really good song overall, and that drum breakdown in the middle is sick.
Grade: 7.5

Parama: Rosetta - Absent & Beta Aquilae
The more I listen to this song, the more I appreciate it. The long build up in the intro is great, and then it just explodes into some awesome riffage. The vocals were really quiet and subdued, but I actually really liked how they fit in the song. Also, the drumming was just fantastic, and as someone who plays the drums it made it a lot of fun to listen to. Oh, and that ending was like Misunderstood meets Chaosphere = yes.
Grade: 8.5

Splent: Jean-Luc Ponty - The Trans-Love Express
Such groove... That pretty much sums up this tune haha. The melodies of this song were great, but for me it was really the rhythm sections, the bass, drums, and rhythm guitar, that totally steal the show. They were just flawless. Can't help myself from smiling when the guitar solo comes in at 2:00. I could listen to this on repeat for days.
Grade: 8.5

This round was absolutely awesome guys! I'm gonna need some iTunes money or something for Christmas.

STANDINGS
1. Splent - 30
2. Senecadawg - 28.5
2. Shadow Ninja - 28.5
2. Train of Naught - 28.5
5. Scorpion - 27.5
5. Sacul - 27.5
7. Parama - 27
8. Tyrias - 26.5

Scores are still all really close together. Everyone's been consistent.

Let's do another open round next, because why not?
Next round might take a little longer than normal, as Finals Week is upon me next week. Results should be next weekend (so like a week and a half) at the latest. Please don't kill me.

Listen to the entire album. It's called Enigmatic Ocean. The whole album is like that. All of Ponty's 70s stuff (and much of his early 80s stuff) is like this, but this is my favorite by far (and it's not even the most popular, that goes to cosmic messenger, which was the following album... But you don't have Smith, Holdsworth, or Stuermer)... But still excellent.

Train of Naught: Alter Bridge - Cry of Achilles
Ah, another band that I briefly listened to, and figured they were just another "DT clone". Well maybe they still are, but this song in particular definitely isn't.

This round was absolutely awesome guys! I'm gonna need some iTunes money or something for Christmas.

Please don't kill me.

Dude  :lol
I don't get it... Am I being dumb?

You are the first person I've seen to call Alter Bridge a DT clone, but beside that, you're a very bright kid, don't worry!

Yea goddamnit Sacul I wanted to send a better TMV song, likewise you probably wanted to send a better Alter Bridge song.  :-\

Sent. Same song in both this roulette and BIZKIT's, yeah I'm lazy.

I'll try something else next

ROUND (What round is it?) RESULTS

Train of Naught: Distorted Harmony - Misguided
I don't say this that often, but I felt this song was too long. I really enjoyed the first 4-5 minutes, but eventually it just kind of tired me out. I think if they trimmed some of the stuff here, it could be a really solid 4-5 minute song, but as it is it just feels a little bloated.
Grade: 6.5

Tyrias: Anathema - Anathema
I got a couple Anathema tunes in my last roulette, but I think that was before this album came out. This was probably my favorite of the songs I got, it was pretty enjoyable all the way through. I will say that it was probably trying to be more epic than it actually was, but it was still pretty darn cool.
Grade: 7

Splent: Return to Forever - Sorceress
This was sort of similar to your last song, at least with the bass grove. I definitely liked the last one more though, and although this song had its moments, I didn't think there was anything super special about it. Still a good listen, but it didn't quite live up to the lofty expectations I had after your last song.
Grade: 7

Shadow Ninja: Lindsey Stirling - Shatter Me
This song was cool, and a lot of fun to listen to. Vocalist was awesome, really powerful and energetic. I'm not a huge violin fan, but some of the parts in this song were really awesome. The build-up in the intro was probably my favorite part. It was pretty epic.
Grade: 7.5

Senecadawg: Damien Rice - 9 Crimes
Yeah, this definitely was reminiscent of Bird of Sorrow. It had a very similar slow build-up to the big climax at the end, but in my opinion, it didn't quite reach the level of Bird of Sorrow. Still a pretty great tune, but it kinda just made me want to listen to Glen Hansard :P
Grade: 7.5

Scorpion: Nevermore - Passenger
This song was pretty darn heavy, with some great riffs. I really liked the spoken word sections, they were pretty great. Overall the song was pretty cool, although I felt it was a little repetitive at times.
Grade: 7.5

Sacul: Ulver: Lost in Moments
This song wasn't anything special if your eyes are open, but when you close your eyes it gets pretty freakin cool. Not sure if I've ever had a song quite like that before. Overall, there wasn't really one thing in particular that stood out, but as a whole it was a really interesting piece.
Grade: 7.5

Parama: East of the Wall - Naif/Linear Failure/My Favorite Society Guy
Wow, parts of this song were crazy heavy. Like trying to drag a truck through a swamp kind of heavy. And then some of it was not very heavy. That kind of contrast was really cool, and it made it a breeze to get through all 10 minutes of the song(s). So yeah, not much else I have to say, except thank you :lol
Grade: 8

Twas the round of the 7.5 scores.

STANDINGS
1. Splent - 37
2. Senecadawg - 36
2. Shadow Ninja - 36
4. Train of Naught - 35.5
5. Scorpion - 35
5. Sacul - 35
5. Parama - 35
8. Tyrias - 33.5

Nothing mind blowing this round, but nothing even remotely bad. I'm totally out of theme ideas, so let's do another open round, shall we?

yeah, I guess that's right. but in this round the differnce between best and worst song was 1.5 points, so that would mean I have to send the best song for 3 consecutive rounds, while everyone else has to suck. And I doubt that's realistic.

Also, sending out-there stuff and seeing reactions is just a lot more fun :lol

Write-ups are a little short this time, but I didn't want to keep you guys waiting any longer.

RESULTS

Train of Naught: Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down
This sounded vaguely familiar, but I wasn't completely sure if I'd heard it before, so I let it go. I was pretty lukewarm on it, honestly. It;s got some good catchy parts, but overall I don't think it's super special. I think I don't really connect with the vocals that much. They just seem kind of average.
Grade: 6.5

Scorpion: Grayceon - War's End
This was way different from anything you've sent this far. It had some really interesting guitar parts, but as a whole it didn't really connect with me. It just felt like it dragged on a little too much, and wasn't aside from a few nice moments wasn't all that memorable. Again, it definitely wasn't bad, and I liked quite a bit of it, but overall it was just kind of decent.
Grade: 6.5

Sacul: Refused - New Noise
This was one of those ones where I really liked the music, but the vocals weren't really my thing. They weren't bad, but I felt the song had the potential to be much better with some better vocals. Musically, though, it was solid. Nothing to nitpick there.
Grade: 7

Splent: Worlds - Little Lens
Definitely getting a Rush vibe from this song, especially in the vocals, which were very good by the way. I really liked most of the guitar lines, especially in the middle section about a minute or so in. The only complaint I have is not actually about the song itself, but the recording had a bunch of skips in it that bugged me. Pretty good stuff.
Grade: 7

Tyrias: Arkasia - The Awakening:
I don't listen to a whole lot of dubstep, but this was a lot better than most of what I've heard. The music itself was really good and I enjoyed it a lot, but I thought the vocal samples were kind of annoying at times, and I wish the whole thing was just the musical parts.
Grade: 7

Parama: Intronaut - Fast Worms
So far your heavy stuff has done pretty well, and this is no exception. I didn't think it was quite as good as some of the previous tunes, but it had a lot of cool stuff. Solid riffs, good vocals, etc. There were a few times where I felt they were being complicated for the sake of being complicated, but it wasn't enough to really make a difference in my enjoymenet of he song.
Grade: 7.5

Senecadawg: Marillion - Man of a Thousand Faces
I've only heard Sugar Mice by Marillion (I liked it a lot), and I've been meaning to check them out more. This song pretty much exceeded all my expectations... until the ending, which I wasn't too big on. Kind of a shame, really, cause I was digging the first 5 minutes, but the end just wasn't my thing. Still a good song, and I'll definitely be checking more out.
Grade: 7.5

Shadow Ninja: Landon Tewers - Findlay
This was... powerful. Like damn. It was quite the unique song, too. Not sure if I've ever really heard anything like it. This song was all about the mood, which was extremely dark, and the spoken words did a great job of portraying that. Very interesting song.
Grade: 8

STANDINGS
1. Splent - 44
1. Shadow Ninja - 44
3. Senecadawg - 43.5
4. Parama - 42.5
5. Train of Naught - 42
5. Sacul - 42
7. Scorpion - 41.5
8. Tyrias - 40.5

Lots of moving around in the standings, but I guess that's what happens when first and last are separated by 3.5 points

Ok, you guys have been good about not sending too much prog/metal, and the stuff you did send was pretty good, but this round I'm gonna ban all prog/metal and see what you guys come up with.
Happy Holidays!

Well crap. Yeah that recording sucked. The quality was bad. I didn't have access to my computer to send you a better version though. If I were to send you a better quality version would my score go up? ;)

Sorry sorry sorry. For some reason I actually have a lot of homework on the first week of the term, so that's the cause of the delay. Hopefully I can get results up in the next day or two.

Parama: Esben and the Witch - No Dog
I really liked the beginning of this one, but once it slowed down and the vocals came in it was just kind of "ok". I liked the guitar and drums alot, they were definitely the highlight for me. Overall, this is kind of a classic "good but not great" song.
Grade: 6.5

Sacul: Swans - Lunacy
I really liked the intro to this song, it was really dark and brooding. I wasn't that big on the vocals, and the "Lunacy" part went on a little long, but otherwise this was a good song, with some pretty unique aspects to it.
Grade: 6.5

Tyrias: Bilderbuch - Spliff
This was a pretty fun song. Very laid back and chill atmosphere to it. The bass was probably my favorite aspect, as it was pretty funky. Quite an enjoyable tune.
Grade: 7

Scorpion: Extreme - Take us alive
After seeing the name Extreme, I was like "Dude, this was the no metal round!". But then the music started and it was most certainly not metal. This was a different style, but it reminded me a lot of Tyrias' song, in that it was really laid back and fun.
Grade: 7

Shadow Ninja: Rise Against - Hero of War
I've heard a couple Rise Against songs, and honestly I was never a big fan. However, I'd never heard an acoustic song from them before, and I was pleasantly surprised as it turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Nothing super special, but definitely an enjoyable song to listen to.
Grade: 7.5

Splent: Brand X - Born Ugly
I'm a huge Genesis fan, and I always knew Phil Collins did some other projects, but I never actually listened to any of them. That was a mistake, cause this is some good stuff. Really nice groove going throughout the song, with Phil consistently showing why he's one of my favorite drummers. There were a couple times where I felt the song lost a little focus, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Grade: 8

Train of Naught: Rival Sons - Keep on Swinging
Yeah, this definitely had a throwback classic rock kind of vibe, although with a little modern twist to make it it's own thing. Really fun, energetic song with some solid vocals and a great guitar solo. Really good stuff.
Grade: 8

Senecadawg: Sufjan Stevens - Fourth of July
I think you got the wrong holiday here, buddy :lol. In all seriousness, this song was pretty powerful stuff. Loved the melancholic atmosphere. Not a whole lot else to say, but I really like this one.
Grade: 8

Only a difference of 1.5 between first and last this round.

STANDINGS
1. Splent - 52
2. Shadow Ninja - 51.5
2. Senecadawg - 51.5
4. Train of Naught - 50
5. Parama - 49
6. Sacul - 48.5
6. Scorpion - 48.5
8. Tyrias - 47.5

OK, I honestly have no idea what round it is (I think it's gotta be like 6 or something), but since I've been slacking a lot recently I'll go ahead and call this the final round, so time to pull out all the stops, as this is still anyone's game. The round will be open too. Good luck and may the best man win!

No matter what I do, there will always be a senecadawg above me in the results, albeit with the same score.

Glad you liked it, this song apparently does very well.

Will have to think about this for a while, I'll need a 10/10 to have a shot at this.

EDIT: Sent the best song of 2015

BTW how will you deal with a potential tie? It's pretty likely with the top 3 only being separated by 0.5 points

Title: Re: Tom Bombadil's Roulette v2. get HYPED
Post by: Tom Bombadil on January 15, 2016, 06:26:00 PM
Splent: Gentle Giant - Cogs in Cogs
This might have been the biggest shocker in the round. You've had such a consistently great roulette that I was expecting to really enjoy this, but it really didn't do that much for me. There wasn't anything particularly bad about it, it just didn't really grab me that much. Sorry :(
Grade: 7

Train of Naught: Native Construct - Chromatic Aberration
Wow, this song was interesting. I thought it started out pretty great, but then it just started going all over the place. There were a lot of good individual sections (that bass jam was awesome), but it kinda felt like 15 separate ideas mashed together, with little to no transitions between them. Still, most of the sections were pretty good. So overall, there's a whole lot of potential here, I just think it could use some cleaning up and just a little more direction in where the music is going.
Grade: 7

Sacul: Igorrr - Tout Petit Moineau
This was really cool. Not sure if I've ever heard anything quite like it. The electronic stuff is great, with a lot of interesting things going on. This is probably blasphemous, but I thought just good, not great, although there were a couple great spots in there. Overall, I really liked the tone of this whole song, and thought it was really unique.
Grade: 7

Tyrias: A Silver Mt.Zion - Mountains Made of Steam
This was another very interesting piece. The music was all good. It was all about the vocals, and they were so weird that I still can't decide if I like them or not. Some times I think they're great, others it's like "what the hell is this?". So yeah, trying to decide on a score for this was really hard. I'm thinking music is like an 8, vocals can range from from 6-7.5. Very memorable song.
Grade: 7.5

Shadow Ninja: Sarah Fimm - Orchids
Nice, melancholic tune. It was very relaxing, with great vocals and some awesome cello. It did end rather abruptly, but everything else was pretty great. Not much else to say on this one, but I definitely enjoyed it.
Grade: 7.5

Parama: The Hirsch Effekt - Cotard
The intro was kind of "meh", and at first I thought I was not gonna like this. But it quickly turned around and I ended up really enjoying it. The vocals are great (although I wish I could understand the lyrics :P). The only things I weren't that big on were the intro, and that blast-beat part in the middle that just came out of nowhere. Overall a very good tune.
Grade: 8

Scorpion: David Gilmour - In Any Tongue
I'm not a HUGE Pink Floyd fan, but I like a lot of their stuff. Never listened to much of Gilmour's solo work, though. Looks like this is from his most recent album too, which I'd heard some good things about. Pretty amazing that he can still turn out such good stuff after 40 years. This song is like an instant classic. It's got pretty much everything; solid vocals and instrumentation, and an excellent guitar solo. This was definitely one of my favorites of the round, and even the roulette.
Grade: 8.5

Senecadawg: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not
Definitely heard of this band before, but never checked them out in any depth. This song took a little while to get going, but once the drums and bass come in it was pretty amazing. Vocals were pretty awesome as well, including the harsh ones. Oh, and that ending was fantastic. The only part I wasn't too big on was when it went all blast-beat around 9 minutes in, but that was a pretty brief section. I'm definitely getting this album.
Grade: 9 (Congratulations)

Nobody got the dreaded 6.5 score this round. It is truly cause for celebration.

FINAL RESULTS
1. Senecadawg - 60.5
2. Splent - 59
2. Shadow Ninja - 59
4. Train of Naught - 57
4. Parama - 57
4. Scorpion - 57
7. Sacul - 55.5
8. Tyrias - 55

And for the second time in 2 years, Seneca takes the roulette! I wonder what would've happened if Parama had sent the song earlier :P

Thanks to everyone for participating. I know I wasn't as fast as last time, but I still really enjoyed doing this, and I got a bunch of great submissions.

congrats seneca on the win.

Thanks man- you put in a really good fight yourself. Could've gone either way (or to Shadow Ninja, in fact)

Anyways, thanks for running the roulette, Bombadil! As was the case last time, I really enjoyed playing. It's clear that our tastes align a considerable amount and that really warms my heart  :-*

You basically said it all Tom.. Chromatic Aberration is, well, way too much, I didn't expect you to fall in love with it with a couple of listens, it's one of the most random songs in my music library. On the other hand, I had just one more round to catch up a 2 points deficit, I needed a miracle for that seeing how scores usually range, this was about the only song I could think of that had the possibility of that.

So yea this wasn't unexpected, but it got pretty close in the ending. Congrats seneca! (man I feel like I've said this before)

Oh and thanks for running this, even though you gave one of my favorite songs a 6.5 I still had fun

Another win for the dawg puts him alone as the all-time roulette leader!  Too bad for splent... I was rooting for him to get his first win on just his second (third?) roulette.

Gratz seneca! Now stop playing forever so that other people can win roulettes too. :P
