Hey guy's so Angra has been working on the new album this year and it's one of my anticipated album of the year for me.
So here what they have to say:
"The brazilian metal band "Angra" are in the studio in Stockholm (Sweden) with Jens Bogren who previously worked (Soilwork, Kreator, Devin Townsend, Ihsahn, Dark Tranquility, Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth, Dragonforce, The Ocean, Haken, Rotting Christ)
They are preparing to record their 8th album, which will follow Aqua, released in 2010. It was the last album with Edu Falaschi (vocals) and Ricardo Confessori (drums)
Now the group has recruited Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire/Vision Divine) (why I'm I not surprised lol) and Bruno Valverde for the new drummer. "
The album will be out on December 17th in Japan and January 16th in Europe/Brazil.
You can hear a taste of the upcoming album "Black Hearted Soul" not the best quality but from the sound of it, it's sounding like "Spread Your Fire" a little bit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDyymW8n8Do
What do you guy's think? :)
-
I'll listen to the album when it's available for streaming somewhere, but that snippet doesn't really do anything for me.
-
Intrigued. Jens is pretty much the King Midas of production in my eyes.
-
I can't imagine Fabio with Angra, but since I love both individually, I will definitely give this a few spins when it comes out. Unlike most others, I actually think that Aqua was incredibly strong, so I would love for them to release something else on that level.
-
The song didn't really do much for me. I really liked Rebirth and loved Temple of Shadows since the day it came out, but I've lost quite a lot of interest in them since then. And I don't know if it's Fabio Lione's voice or what, but this sounded much more "generic power metal" than I've come to expect from them.

Exactly this. Happened to check out 'Rebirth' back in the day, really enjoyed it. Cared for 'Temple of Shadows' a bit after that, but that was basically it. This song, I couldn't stand listening to more than five seconds. That's how close minded I've become for power metal I guess.
That said, I really like that 'Unholy Wars' song from Rebirth. I actually remember that song.

I think Aqua was really quite strong too.
That song sample sounded okay, but yeah, wouldn't mind if they continued on the Aqua path. I hope this isn't a return to just a more straight forward power metal sort of thing. Something like AC would be amazing too.
-
New song (official):

Only one listen and I though very interesting and a bit different for Angra ... maybe the heaviness of rhythm guitars.
And yes, I like Aqua very much too!
-
That sounds fresh. It's a bit proggier than their latest releases but still keeping that "brazilian" sound that makes them unique.
-
Eh, the song isn't bad. I think I just don't like Lione's voice very much.
-
I really liked that song. It takes a bit to get used to Lione singing over Angra, but he does a good job and the instrumental section is gorgeous.

I didn't realise it was FB until I read this thread. He's toned down the Italianisms here - now had he sang "sword" at any point I would have realised it was him
Newborn Me is pretty good song. Will pick this up.
-
Nice from about 3 mins in , but prior to that just sounded like generic power/prog metal.
-
Newborn Me sounded a little better than the previous snippet, but the vocals sound off, like they start and accent before/after the beat sometimes and are out of sync with the music. It was especially noticeable during the verses, and it makes the song feel rather uncomfortable.

Pretty much this for me. It is a bit of a weird mix, but I'm sure we'll get use to it. This does actually remind me of AC a little, which is a very good thing.
It's also funny as I don't think there was ever an official statement saying that Fabio was the permanent singer. I could be wrong.

Pretty much this. Will try the official link later today.
-
I have listened to the new song about five times now, and I think it's really solid. Fabio fits in beautifully and to my surprise, sounds quite a lot like Edu at times! Can't wait to hear the rest of the album! So happy that Angra are back!!! :metal

New video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s99o09I7jNs
Something a bit different and unique. I don't mind this. Love's Rafael's lead vox too.
-
I'm gonna go with meh. I agree that Rafael's lead vox is quite good but the rest is pretty standard and not very interesting. And the video doesn't help at all :lol
-
I guess I'm pretty open to whatever they do. I think the album is heading in a good direction. Saying that, I'm one of the ones that thought Aqua was quite good.
-
So, is Fabio Leone NOT in Vision Divine anymore? Their last album might make my Top 10 of this decade!

I haven't heard his status on VD. I don't think it was ever officially announced that he was the full time vocalist for Angra.
Agree about VD's last album, it was really good.
-
I've never really gotten into Angra, but I'll probably get this due to him singing on it.
-
Fabio is such an underrated metal vocalist.

my toss up for 2010 album of the year was between Angra's Aqua and Orbs' debut.
i retroactively trumped em both when i discovered Shaolin Death Squad's 5 Deadly Venoms, but still, it remains a top 3 2010 album for me :metal
-
Aqua was fantastic. Arising Thunder, The Rage of the Waters, Spirit of the Air and Ashes are all some of my very favourite Angra songs. I really liked the more experimental direction they took on the album. And, while that doesn't necessarily mean a lot for the music, the album cover is absolutely stunning, one of my all-time favourites.
-
Yeah Aqua did have a great cover.
-
30-second samples of the new album available here: https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Garden-Angra/dp/B00QTCKM9M
Judging from these samples and the two killer tracks that we've already heard, I couldn't possibly be more excited or optimistic about Secret Garden and the future of Angra! :tup
-
These samples sound really damn good.
-
I wasn't impressed tbh - I've listened to the full album a couple of times (Jap release) and aside from some instrumental sections it's pretty generic prog power metal IMHO. Not even in the same ballpark as stuff like Angels Cry or Holy Land.
-
Damn.
-
heh, gonna hafta get this one, I think :corn
-
I downloaded the new album from Amazon a few days ago and after five listens, I am very impressed and I think most Angra fans will be as well. The reviews have been extremely complimentary, with most saying this is their best since Temple of Shadows.
My favorite tracks at the moment are:
Silent Call: Seriously, this closing track could be the most beautiful song Angra have ever written! It was my favorite upon my first listen and it still is.
Violet Sky: A very punishing and bleak track that would have fit quite well on Aurora Consurgens. As far as I know, Rafael has never sang lead vocals on any other Angra album, but he's all over Secret Garden and I must say he does a very good job. The choirs at the end is a really nice touch!
Secret Garden: I can't believe how much this sounds like Nightwish. One of my favorite things about the new album is how diverse it is--considering how long this band has been around for, it's really refreshing to see them display so many new tricks.
Storm of Emotions: The perfect choice for a single but I wish they hadn't cut that instrumental part; it annoys me so much when edited singles always seem to omit the solos instead of one of the choruses. A really catchy song that I hope will become a live favorite.
-
Finally got this album and spun it I think, three times. I gotta say at first I wasn't too sure, but I'm starting to think it's quite spectacular. The melodies, performances and complexities within the songs are fantastic, and some really amazing long solos too from the boys which all fit well in the songs.
I am a little confused at the vocals. I think Fabio is underutilised. Saying that though, I think Rafael's vocals are amazing and a welcome addition to the band. I just don't get a full song by Simone and another with a duet between Rafael and Doro, yet there's no real interplay between Rafael and Fabio. The Police cover might have both of their voices, but I'm not really sure yet. Also, this song while being a stellar cover, seems weird being there. I don't know who this other songwriter is on a couple of tracks either.
Saying that, there's nothing really weak here and all in all it's an amazing dark, heavy and strong consistent yet varied album. Really good stuff.
-
Repeated listening pays dividends with this album. Like most of the comments I've seen on it, first couple of spins I thought it sounded OK, nothing special, but not bad either. Around the 4th or 5th time through I started really digging it, now it's been pretty steady in the current rotation for the last couple of weeks.
Right now I'd give it 3/5 stars, but that might inch upward a bit over time.
-
I'm confident in giving it a 4/5 already, I'm really liking this.
Did you guys get the Police cover with yours? I'm reading there's a lot of versions out there with it omitted.
-
Excelent album IMO! I listened to that version of Synchronicity (really cool, by the way) only on youtube. Here in Brazil the CD doesn't have it. :tdwn
Where did you buy yours?
-
Just an online Australian store that I get all my music from. It seems weird how much it's omitted on other versions.
This album however is amazing and is still on repeat in my car, really good stuff.

-
Btw, I didn’t see Kiko Loureiro in the video, is he out? That would really suck.
-
Yeah, he pretty much is. :( I don't know what, if any, input he had on the upcoming album. I think Megadeth just takes up too much of his time.
-
Nice! Secret Garden was a nice shot, I can see that new Angra album coming soon! Well I can't know everything but I should have known about that... I don't how this had flew under my radar... ::)
-
I hope Secret Garden wasn't a fluke and this doesn't end up being another Aqua. Oh wait, Fabio is on vocals, so there's no chance of that. Hooray :lol
-
Dude... Just wait till the next time I have an extra awesome DT ticket... I wonder who will get it...

Kiko officially quit Angra a while ago due to his Megadeth commitments.
I wasn't all that keen on that new song to be honest. Secret Garden though was top 3 Angra, so I'm holding out hope.

I listened to it this morning (the song) and agree.
I find it hard to even relate this stuff to the brilliance of Angel's Cry etc.....
it's solid power/prog but that's about it for me.

I agree, Aqua was terrible, but I don't think that was entirely Edu's fault. I liked pretty much everything he did with the band up to that point (Temple of Shadows is my favorite of theirs). Then again he has been pretty bad in the recent Almah albums, so.....
Also I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Kiko didn't have any input on this album. If I remember correctly I think Marcelo Barbosa did most of the lead guitar work.

Man... I guess I should go back and try Angel's Cry again. I was never too fussed about it. Secret Garden is indeed top 3 material. Fireworks and Rebirth are where it's at for me.

Yeah, seems to be from that video. Funny he's playing in Angra if you ask me. I wonder if he will still be able to be a member in Almah. I think I remember reading years back when Edu left Angra that he wanted to cut all ties with Angra, including band members.
-
Maybe I'm totally wrong about Kiko officially leaving Angra. Can't find anything from him and wiki still has him as a member.
This is the band photo on Encyclopedia Metallium though;

What did you think of Secret Garden?
I can't even remember. Checking my song ratings I really liked the last couple of tracks but found the rest just okay.
I'm a big fan of Angels Cry through Fireworks but have found the rest patchy. Matos' vocals are obviously love/hate (I find his high pitched stuff a bit painful at times) but when they were rocking in that era the technicality and catchiness combined had me hooked and the unique South American vibe gave them something further that was unique. Since Matos left I find them to be just a good band with a few really strong songs each album
I will revisit Rebirth based on Chad's comment but cannot remember enjoying it all that much , and I was a big fan at the time.
-
I really have to go back through most of their earlier stuff as I was more into the Edu stuff for some reason. Aurora Consurgens was always a fav of mine.
-
Can someone please list which Angra albums have which singer?
-

Angels Cry, Holy Land, Fireworks were Andre Matos.
Rebirth, Temple of Shadows, Aurora Consurgens, and Aqua were Edu Falaschi.
Secret Garden and Omni are Fabio Lione.
-
Aurora Consurgens was always a fav of mine.
And that was one I wasn't a fan of. Aqua was pretty meh too
TASTES!!!
-
Indeed. :) Aurora Consurgens is one of my favorites. Aurora, Temple of Shadows, and Holy Land. But I enjoy them all; I think Fireworks is probably my least favorite but it's still a pretty good album. I like Aqua too. Lease of Life is such an incredibly beautiful track.
I haven't listened to the new track much yet but am looking forward to the new album.

That’s a shame if true. Any Angra album is better than any Megadeth album from the last 20+ years imo.

As I said, it looks like I jumped the gun, can't find anything official either way, but seems like he has nothing to do with this new one from what we know so far.
Aqua is not that bad. It's definitely not the best, but it's okay.

Perfect, thank you!

Holy Land is my favorite Angra album. Their most experimental, perhaps.
-
I'll give this a listen but while I love Fabio with Rhapsody he doesn't work for me with Angra. I'm a Matos guy and Angra died for me when he left although there's some good stuff on Rebirth (Running Alone especially) and I like Temple of Shadows a fair amount.
I much prefer the Matos/Tollki collaboration of Symfonia than later Angra.

I love that whole CD, I wish they'd made more, but "Forevermore" is my favorite on that. One of those one off CDs that comes from out of nowhere that's just great and then never heard from again.
Matos is one of my favorite singers but he needs a strong songwriter. His solo stuff is fairly mediocre but I do like Shaman's debut "Ritual" along with the Symphonia. I also love his stuff with Viper, the debut is solid and "Theater of Fate" may be my favorite CD of all time. If not it's tied with others, there's nothing I like better.
-
Angra just posted on Facebook a lot of dates for their Omni World Tour. They’re coming to Peru, so I might go see them for the first time :metal
-
I am so hyped for this album. Fabio is one of my all time favorite singers and Secret Garden's songwriting was on a level Angra's never been at before. This better rock.

My thoughts exactly. Secret Garden is my favorite Angra album so far. I really like that they took a more prog direction with it as opposed to the more power metal sound of their previous albums.
-
Waiting anxiously for the new album. Count me as also being a fan of the more recent Angra's style!
Just to add, I've never seen any band document the creative process and open it to fans (while it's happening) like Angra did with this last album. Check this out:

Too bad this thing not to be subtitled in english, to be more acessible for all the fans in the world. But it is extremely cool nevertheless.
-
I agree that it's really cool - I too think they should add subtitles though. Angra has always been bad about that - at one point the English version of their website was about 15 months behind, they have so much video content without subtitles, etc. And they have a pretty decent international following.
-

To be honest, I thought the Symfonia was absolute shit.
-
I have lost track of Angra lately, so I shouldn't probably be allowed to comment, but as good as Fabio Lione may be, I thought that Angra was an important enough band to get their own singer, rather than borrow someone who has 43 projects and lives on the other side of the ocean.
I know that it's probably best to have such a renowed singer if no local one is avalaible, but sharing a singer with many bands feels to me like a huge downsizing of the band, which is probably what has happened anyway.

The Youtube subtitles seem to work pretty well in English for the videos. Maybe they added them since you last watched them, or are they just auto-generated/translated?
Either way, thanks for sharing that playlist :D I'm really enjoying watching these!
-
Good to know that! I thought that there wasn’t any subtitles from what I remember. Maybe they were always there, but I didn’t notice it, because I didn’t need them

I see your point, and agree with you to a certain degree, but the last album (first with Fabio) is SO GOOD, he shines all over it. I think they made the right call to include him.
Also, if I’m not mistaken, once this Rhapsody reunion/anniversary/whatever tour ends, they’re done with the band, since this isn’t the “official” version of Rhapsody anyway, so I think Angra is Fabio’s main band now.
-
Sooner or later I'll have to check out this combination. I remember being skeptic about Fabio replacing Khan in Kamelot for a tour, but then I saw the show and it was great. So I know what he's capable of doing :coolio and if Angra becomes his main band, all the better!
-
Fabio's done with Rhapsody. It's just a reunion tour with the OG lineup. Angra's his main bag now, although I can't deny I'm a bit surprised Angra went with such a titanic name in the genre instead of getting another Spanish or Brazilian guy! All the better for me though :)
-
I could never get into Rhapsody, but love Fabio’s voice, so I’m glad he’s with Angra full time now :metal

ANGRA RELEASE NEW ALBUM ØMNI ON FEBRUARY 16
2018 marks the beginning of yet another era in Angra's history.
At age 26, the band shows motivation and strength like never before. Not even the sometimes uncertain trajectory was able to take away the focus, determination and inspiration of the quintet led – and founded – by Rafael Bittencourt, and formed by Felipe Andreoli (bass), Fabio Lione (vocals), Marcelo Barbosa (guitar) and Bruno Valverde (drums).
ØMNI is Angra's 9th studio album, the result of months of intense dedication, blood, and sweat. It will be released on February 16, 2018 on earMUSIC.
Once again, the album has been recorded in Sweden with Jens Bogren, who also produced the previous album Secret Garden, and manages to capture the same excellent chemistry.
The sound, while fully contemporary, has an organic character and respects the different nuances and dynamics of each instrument. Many musicians were involved in creating the album, ranging from the percussion sound of Bahia to European orchestral arrangement – all of which give the album its outstanding variety.
ØMNI is a concept album, a set of science fiction short stories that take place at various places in time, simultaneously. The backbone of the plot is based on the idea that in 2046 an artificial intelligence system will change human perception and cognition. It is a system which will allow conscious communication between present and future human beings. Characters such as time travellers, cavemen, warriors, among others, help tell this story.
The album connects the concepts of previous albums (Holy Land, Rebirth, Temple of Shadows) to one main system, ØMNI, which in Latin means "everything." ØMNI fabricates an interconnectivity that shines light towards a universal truth: everything that has happened, led to what the band is today. ØMNI celebrates and unites the whole history of Angra to this exact, current moment.
Angra's trademark formula, a Brazilian style mixed with classical music and heavy metal, is enhanced by different influences such as progressive rock, thrash metal, Latin music, and djent, which transforms the albums into a swirl of modern and familiar. The conjoined moods and dynamics put a special spin on the lyrics and therefore increase deep sense of immersion in the story.
The cover artwork was hand-drawn by Daniel Martin Diaz, a unique American artist who dedicates his life to mixing scientific and philosophical concepts such as Anatomy, Computer Science, Mathematics, Cosmology, Sacred Geometry, Symbolism and Esotericism. The designer Gustavo Sazes was responsible for integrating such an organic art piece to the visual concept of the album as a whole.
Even in a cultural environment increasingly sterile and unfavourable for music with soul and identity, the band gathers eleven tracks that completely differ from each other, but at the same time tell a cohesive story, and wander through all styles and nuances that have made Angra a worldwide reference. A very well bonded line-up, both personally and musically, overflowing with creativity, was the necessary fuel to bring these songs to life, songs which are undoubtedly among the best in the band's discography.
ØMNI certainly is a milestone, not only in the history of the band, but also for Brazilian metal and its recognition worldwide.

I like that better than most stuff I have heard from them in recent years :tup Having said that (and having grown up with Angra) I find it hard to really think of them as Angra with only Rafael left.
Supposedly that song has a solo from Kiko - presumably the other dude just "played" it for the vid?

That seems to be the case. Kiko recorded the solo (and I’m very glad they let him guest on at least one track) but seems like he wasn’t available for the video shoot, which is pretty understandable.
Loved the song, btw. Can’t wait to see them live in June :metal
-
Excellent stuff. Very much looking forward to this album.
-
This band has shot up so high on my favorites list since The Secret Garden. They're like a whole other animal these days (in the best possible way). Fantastic vocals, great power metal riffing/drumming, amazing solo - that song ROCKS!! :metal :metal

So I wish the band or Kiko would clarify exactly what his status is in the band then ffs.
I've always really liked Rafael for some reason and always thought him as equal to Kiko. It's just weird that the new bloke is from Almah, although a very good guitarist.
-
It's heeeeere!
I woke up late and only heard the first few tracks, one of which surprised me greatly but I ended up really liking the song. But it's really strong so far. Really, really strong.
-
Great, great album! The sequence from War Horns into Ømni Silence Inside is unbelievable strong. I guess this album is kind of a more developed Secret Garden, which I see as a very good album.
About Kiko, I believe that the doors are always open for him to return if he doesn’t stay on Megadeth and want to come back. In fact, I believe that he, Rafael and the bassist are the legal owners of the band. But, in recent interviews, Rafael is saying that Marcelo and Fábio are band members. Kiko’s solo in the album is just a guest appearance.
-
Albumzão da porra! Melhor som deles desde o Temple of Shadows, NMHO.
Great album! Their best work since Temple of Shadows, IMHO. Personally I think Lione is still a little misplaced here, and Marcelo does a great job filling Kiko's shoes.
-
The more correct translation from portuguese wouldn't be "a fu**ing great album"?! ;D
I'm not a typical Angra fan and, to me, when they bring more prog or prog metal influences to their sound the better! On Omni, Marcelo influence's to me is pretty evident, as he is known as a big Dream Theater fan.
I love Temple of Shadows, but I also like Acqua immensely and I know I'm a bit lonely on this. Aurora Consurgeons has its moments, but it's inferior to all these 4 albums IMO.
On a bit more on traditional Angra, I think Holy Land is excellent and the first album is very good, but I don't care for Rebirth and I really don't like Fireworks.
-
Great album! I still like Secret Garden more, but it’s too early to have a defined opinion, since I’ve only listened to it twice.
Really like all of the tracks, but Black widow’s web is very weird (for an Angra song) and I’m not a fan of the closing track. Other than that, the album is amazing :metal
-
Black Widow's Web took me by surprise big time. Was not expecting that. But it works! Curious to hear Lethean's thoughts, being a big Angra fan.
-
Great album. Favorite song is Magic Mirror, it’s awesome!
-
Their best album since Temple of Shadows, but that isn't saying much... It gets a 7/10 from me. There are a few forgettable songs on here.
-
Just dropped the needle in a few spots. I'm not impressed.
-
Man, I think this might be my favorite Angra album yet, and that's saying something because Secret Garden set the bar pretty high for me. The songwriting rules, the riffs and solos are superb, the production is great, drumming is on point. There really is a blend of all of Angra's sounds over the years on display, but plenty of modern and original stuff going on, too...
I'm a little biased on vocals because I love anything Fabio does but man he just takes an already great melody and elevates it to another level. Insania is such a cool song in that way (love the tempo and chorus melody as well as the 'whoa's at the end). Rafael's vocals are also great, I personally enjoy when he sings and it's no different on Omni. I love this album, very strong contender for album of the year already, I can tell.
-
Just dropped the needle in a few spots. I'm not impressed.
This does not shock me.
-
Fabio is incredible all the album, but his work on Always More manages to go beyond that. :hefdaddy

Yeah, that song really is something else. That's a damn good song. The guitar lick is so simple but beautiful!

Count me in, love that song. Just in the feels.

Please, tell us more.

Insania, War Horns, and Always More are my favorites right now. Going to be really hard to top Insania and AM specifically. Angra outdid themselves with this one :metal
-
I've listened to Omni five times now and there are several songs that I am hooked on. I was happy to see such kind words about Always More because that's the one I haven't been able to get out of my head; it's such a lovely song. Caveman is a lot of fun and it makes me wish Angra incorporated more Portuguese chants into their music. War Horns is probably their heaviest song since Temple of Hate. I'm not sold on the chorus, but the rest of Magic Mirror is sooo good! Kiko will be sorely missed but I'm thrilled to see Angra carry on with such an impressive new album. :metal
-
THAT grooving riff of Caveman! :metal :metal :metal Maybe my favorite from the album (although very hard to choose)
-
Insania is the perfect tempo for me to do cardio at the gym, so I love it even more. War Horns is just plain METAL :metal
Can we get a thread title change? Secret Garden is old hat now :)
-
Still can't decide what's my favorite song, but, man, War Horns is pure :metal
-
Just listened to the new record, Omni, for the first time. Been 25 years since I last listened to Angra. Good stuff! A little predictable, but I enjoyed it!
-
Still can't decide what's my favorite song, but, man, War Horns is pure :metal
Good album but unfortunately for me they rarely got close to matching that track.
-
Man Always More has grown on me so much! Didn’t care for it before, but now I love it! Love the intro riff and the vocals are just beautiful! The album really satisfies me.

I think that Lione over-does it a little, but after all it's just his style and way to translate his emotions.
PS: Someone, please, change the thread title. Thks

Good album but unfortunately for me they rarely got close to matching that track.
Other songs like Caveman, Magic Mirror and Silence Inside are really good too! The whole album is amazing really.
-
My CD arrived today (ordered from Amazon) and while ripping it, although it was unlisted on the back, I discovered it came with a 12th track, a 2017 rerecording of Z.I.T.O. with Fabio on vocals. And it rocks. :metal :metal :metal
-
Black Widow's Web took me by surprise big time. Was not expecting that. But it works! Curious to hear Lethean's thoughts, being a big Angra fan.
I've had the album for a week now and I *love* it. Regarding Black Widow's Web - I don't really need to hear harsh vocals in an Angra song to be honest. I don't hate it, but I don't care for the vocals when they stand alone that much. However, it's a very good song and I can live with it. I also thing when the harsh vocals are used along with Fabio that it actually works quite nicely - so that part is a plus. Also, when the track changes direction - "she may look so innocent" - chills. That part is sooo good and elevates the whole song.
For me, the opening track, Light of Transcendence, is the weakest track on the album and it just takes off and soars from there. Light of Transcendence isn't bad - not at all; it's a good opening track and probably good to pull in those who aren't necessarily looking for "more" from Angra. But there is more, a lot of it, and I think Omni is incredible. I have to be careful listing favorite tracks because I start and then might as well list the whole album. :) Magic Mirror, Omni - Silence Inside, and Caveman are probably settling in around the top.
Since The Bottom of My Soul hasn't been talked about yet, I'll start. This song, I confess, made me a little emotional. Not the first time I heard it, but a few times in. I don't know what it is about Rafael's vocals, but I really connect with them. There is so much heart and passion in this song (and in much of his singing), and it's special to me. I get that people might not like his voice, I get that it's more of a ballad and people might be looking for them to continue with the heavy vibe, I get that we all have different tastes and this song just won't appeal to everyone. But, for those that have maybe just brushed it off, I suggest giving it another listen, and just close your eyes and feel it. It might still not work for you and so be it, but god do I love this song.
Speaking of vocals, this album is my favorite thing that Fabio has done (of what I've heard, of course). I thought he was great on Secret Garden, but I think he's even better on this one, in part because they've been working with him longer by now. I also think they've made some really great use of him and Rafael on some of the same tracks. Particularly Magic Mirror. Rafael's light vocals "remembering the days..." and then Fabio comes in with some edge to his voice and it's just *perfect*.
-
I really dig TBOMS. I love Rafael's voice - Silent Call was one of my favorites on Secret Garden just because of it. (At some point, I need to find his solo album.)
Lethean, even though the subject matter may turn you off and it might not musically be your thing, I think one of Fabio's best albums, concerning vocals, is Rhapsody's Symphony of Enchanted Lands II. About the only thing he doesn't do on that is his rough/harsh vocals.
Shout out to Omni - Infinite Nothing. I love that it's exactly like a film score medley, every time I hear it I can picture the album credits rolling along a montage of images.
-
Yes! I love Silent Call. And Violet Sky for that matter as well. And Crushing Room.... have you ever heard his solo album?
Infinite Nothing is great - it reminds me of Gate XIII, although I think Gate XIII is probably a little bit stronger. I dunno though - Infinite Nothing is a beautiful way to wrap up the album.
Maybe I'll give Rhapsody a try again at some point, but Rhapsody was the reason I didn't like Fabio in the first place, so I'm not sure how well that is going to work...
-

Rafael's solo album, I have not, but I know of it, and I keep looking for it, but it's prohibitively expensive on discogs.com... I would like to snag a copy by the time ProgPower rolls around, for obvious reasons.
If you like Fabio's voice now, it's worth checking out at least a choice handful of Rhapsody tracks because Fabio did everything possible with his voice in that band (high wails, low notes, operatic singing, Italian crooning, screams, growls, he did it all). :)

If you don't mind used, Amazon has it for pretty cheap. They also have some new ones but one on discogs is cheaper ($15 + shipping).
Regarding Rhapsody - it's not that I don't think his voice will be good. I think maybe it was the song writing that bothered me. I don't know. I just remember how surprised I was seeing him with Kamelot.
-
Ahh. Yeah, Rhapsody just isn't for everyone, it's rather niche despite their popularity in that genre. What lovely orchestrations on Symphony II though, since they used a real orchestra from that point on...
I wasn't aware Amazon had cheap used copies, used is A-OK with me. Just ordered a copy. Thanks :)
-
I'm with Lethean on Rhapsody. Fabio is one of my favorite metal singers, but I just can't get into Rhapsody, and I've tried a few times already. Guess I'm just not a fan of that kind of power metal. So glad Angra got him :metal
Back to Omni, though, I like Rafael's vocals on this album much more than on Secret Garden. I think he sang too many songs on SC, but here he shines on the right spots, even though I still don't like his part on Travelers of Time.
Lisht of Transcendence feels like a classic Rebirth era track just to cover that style on the new album. I like it, but it's nothing outstanding. Anyway, the rest of the album is THAT good :hefdaddy
I have to disagree on Infinite Nothing, though. It does nothing for me. It's true that it makes a lot of sense if you consider it as the closing suite of a movie score, but it feels too long and takes you away from the mood you get after the Silence Inside. Maybe it would've worked better as an Overture?
-
I have to disagree with you on Rafael's vocals on Secret Garden. His songs rule and I wouldn't want any of the three to be cut. I also love his part in Storm of Emotions, and the trade off between him and Fabio on the Syncronicity II cover is amazing. I would say that I'd like him to sing a bit more on Omni, but then that would mean I'd be changing Omni, and I really don't want to do that. :)
I agree with you on Light of Transcendence completely.
Infinite Nothing - maybe it would be cool as an overture, but I don't know. It might be a little too mellow for that, and people would be anxious for the rest of the album to start. But at the end, it's a beautiful way to unwind and come down from the intensity of the album. To relive some of the themes that you heard. And, if you're in a hurry or not in the mood for that, you can easily skip it.
-
I don't think Infinite Nothing would be a good opener for a few reasons, the biggest being it's way longer than an intro track should be and it has several soft spots that don't exactly get you pumped for the metal to follow. Just my two cents, anyway.
I hope Rafael does a solo spot at ProgPower, with either Silent Call or Bottom of My Soul in there. :hefdaddy
-
I don't think Infinite Nothing is necessarily too long to be in intro track (after all we've got the Overture on Six Degrees), but I do agree with you that it probably wouldn't work for this album. It just feels more like a wind down, rather than a build up.
-
I've had a listen through the new album but it was kind of on in the background so can't remember a thing from it, except the intro to Caveman, that was fucking brilliant. Sounds quality though on a whole. Some really good guitar melodies from what I can recall.
-
Yes! There is a lot of great guitar work on this album.
-
Yeah, I'm impressed with the guitar work. Particularly Always More, but every song has some great guitar stuff going on. Insania and War Horns have great solos.
Over the weekend I was refreshing my memory on Fabio's history and it's crazy how good he sounds after being in bands for almost 30 years. He's more popular than ever, he's constantly working, he smokes, and he still sounds (arguably) better than ever. Him with Angra is a match made in heaven, it's just a shame Kiko isn't still there. I wish nothing but the best for him though being in Megadeth - that's the opportunity of a lifetime.
-
I think pretty much every song on the album has a great guitar solo. I think Kiko's heart is still there but he just couldn't pass up on the opportunity with Megadeth. But he seems very proud of Omni as well. Maybe one day he'll be back.
-
Re: Fabio, I wonder if it really was the songwriting which made me not like him before, or just a combination of things. I heard his name for a long time but don't remember the first time I heard him. It was probably Rhapsody. But I also didn't care for him so much in Vision Divine. I never heard their first couple albums, but got into them with the first album with Michele Luppi, and I loved Luppi's voice. When they got Fabio back it just didn't work for me, and I gave it a lot of listens. I wonder if it's because that album was just weaker than the Luppi ones anyway, regardless of who was on vocals, or if I just didn't like Fabio in that band. Maybe at some point I'll give it another shot.
On the other hand, maybe Angra is just so good and the songs are so good that I got into him as a result; backwards in a way. First I liked the songs, then liked his voice singing them.
-
Frankly I never was crazy about Vision Divine or Labyrinth, with or without Fabio. I do like that song The Dream Maker, though.
Angra is an oddity in that they seem to get better and better with each album (mostly).
-
I liked Vision Divine because of Luppi's voice. I might have liked the albums he was on with someone else, but it was really his voice that made it interesting for me.
My Angra preferences go up and down and change a lot. I'm not even going to try to fit Omni into a ranking because it's too new. I have a hard enough time ranking the rest, but that's good. Angra albums don't really need to compete with each other.
-
I actually am very interested to see you rank Angra's albums sometime, if you absolutely had to assign spots to them. I know for me Aqua would be at the bottom, SG and Omni would be at the top, and Temple of Shadows would be #3...
-
I'm doing a little listening in preparation for this. Have to do my due diligence, right? :)
But even when I come up with a ranking (can I have a tie?) I'll leave Omni off the list. It needs, and deserves, more time.
-
I will reluctantly allow a tie with the condition you put Omni #1. :lol Just kidding, go for it.
-
I will reluctantly allow a tie with the condition you put Omni #1. :lol Just kidding, go for it.
This is sooooo hard. I just finished listening to all of the studio albums up to Secret Garden, and I think I may have just made it harder for myself rather than easier. Why are you making me do this? I'm going to tell Stadler on you. :P
-
I'll start with the only easy slot for me.
#8 - Fireworks.
I don't think Fireworks is a bad album, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it today. However, it just doesn't quite have as much of that special something that the rest of the albums have. It does have it at times - it's just not as consistent. I can't even say that any of the songs are bad. They're just not as good as Angra usually is. Some of the highlights for me are Lisbon, Fireworks, Gentle Change, and the bonus track Rainy Nights (so beautiful).
-
The rest of this is really hard. I love each of these albums. Each album was pretty much the best as I was listening to it. :) So here goes the rest of the ranking, before I change my mind 20 more times.
#7 - Angels Cry
I hate ranking this so low. Maybe it's losing out a bit by being the first album I listened to today and some of the others are fresher in my mind. Maybe there's a tiny drop-off in song quality as you get to the end of this album, and that's also contributing to the lower ranking. But I love this album. It has some incredible songs - Time and Never Understand are my favorites, Stand Away probably next, and I like the "hits" as well, especially Angels Cry, though I am getting a bit tired of both of them live. Angels Cry has to be one of the strongest debut albums out there, it is so good for a bunch of young guys just releasing their first work. Ugh now I'm playing some of the songs in my head and I want to put it higher again. I'll leave it here for now or else I'll be here all night.
#6 - Secret Garden
I hate putting this at #6 even more. I love Secret Garden. I played it to death for the longest time and I think it is incredible. (This is how awesome Angra is). However - I really dislike the title track. It might be the only Angra song that I don't like, so that being the case, the album suffers for it when I don't skip it (and I didn't tonight, since I'm doing a ranking). Black Hearted Soul and Perfect Symmetry I like, because Angra always manages to make me like their songs like that, but I do feel they've done songs like that better before. Otherwise - highlights - Newborn Me, Final Light, Storm of Emotions, Violet Sky, Upper Levels, Crushing Room, and Silent Call (I think you get the picture...); oh and the Synchronicity 2 cover is phenomenal.
#5 - Rebirth
I think Rafael and Kiko made a statement with this album - that Angra could continue, be reborn, and be even better than before. Singers are a matter of taste, and some people thought it was an upgrade and some thought the opposite. I love both Edu and Andre, with a preference for Edu but I'm happy with both singers in Angra. But I think they their rhythm section definitely got an upgrade - Aquiles Priester is a great drummer and Felipe Andreoli is just phenomenal (said just like James LaBrie would say it :)). The new line up came out with a great first album together in Rebirth. Nova Era is a bright start to the album, but I think it only gets better after that. Acid Rain, Rebirth, Judgement Day, Unholy Wars are my favorites on this one (but I like them all).
# 4 - Aqua
I know a lot of people don't like this one. Even I downgrade it a little bit in my thoughts, maybe because of all the negativity. But as soon as I started playing it tonight - my love for came rushing back. :) My high ranking of it could be part sentimental - this album came out after a long Angra drought, and I played it a *lot*. I don't think it's as immediate as many of their albums. A lot of the tracks had to grow on me; at first I was excited just to hear a new Angra album, then I thought it was weaker compared to their other material, and then as I listened, one by one, the tracks really started to click for me. There are a lot of twists and turns in this album. Also, it features Edu's best song writing in Lease of Life (imo of course).
#3 - Temple of Shadows
I'm surprising myself with this ranking, because Temple of Shadows is often my favorite. Not today I suppose. This album is a masterpiece though. The first half is stellar, and the 2nd half is perfect. The run from The Shadow Hunter to the end of the album is just <I need a new adjective for how good it is.>
#2 - Aurora Consurgens
Another album that people don't like, but people are just wrong sometimes. This is another Angra album that needs more time to grow on you, but when it does, it doesn't let go. Favorites - The Course of Nature, Ego Painted Grey, So Near So Far, Passing By, Scream Your Heart Out... I could keep going. Abandoned Fate is a great closer as well, and even though it's a simple song, it's also one that had to grow on me a little bit.
#1 - Holy Land
There's just no other album like Holy Land. They never made another one quite like it, and no one else did either. (And that's OK; it makes it all the more special).
-
I'm not surprised by Holy Land taking the top spot, but I am surprised at Secret Garden's low position (though I recognize your clarification that you still love it) and Aqua and AC's higher rankings, particularly Aurora. That one does have some great songs and generally isn't loved by fans. Very cool! I will have to sleep on my own ranking and share later. There are a couple fighting for the bottom spot :lol just kidding. It's tricky ranking their albums.
-
Well... going by how quickly you disliked certain Rush albums, or Promised Land, it does make me wonder if maybe some more time with Aurora and Aqua might be in order for you... :) (In all seriousness, you might have listened to them 100 times and they just aren't for you). I just think Aurora especially is really intense, and with both albums, there is so much there that you can listen to them over and over again and still hear new things. Or hear the same thing in a different way.
-
I like AC being so high.
-
I like AC being so high.
:) :)
-
Cool ranking and summary! I agree with a lot of you wrote, specially your love for Acqua and Lease of Life, the most beautiful song composed by Angra IMO.
-
and Felipe Andreoli is just phenomenal (said just like James LaBrie would say it :))
I think he would actually say that about Felipe ;)

Temple of Shadows is seriously one of my quintaessential power metal albums. It's perfect.
-
Okay, I think I'm comfortable with this hot take of a ranking, from least enjoyable to most. I'll spare the deep explanation unless someone (Lethean) takes umbrage with them :lol
Aqua
Angels Cry
Fireworks
Holy Land
Rebirth
Aurora Consurgens
Temple of Shadows
Secret Garden
ØMNI
Aqua was a sorry misstep in the catalogue (to the point where I stopped listening to the band for a year or so after it came out - I pretty much considered them out of creative juice). Angels Cry may as well be an Andre Matos solo effort, and he's like Bon Scott or Brian Johnson, I can only listen to him so much in one sitting. Truthfully I think Angra really hit their stride once Edu joined the band. Other than Aqua, they've been on a roll since Rebirth, and Angra 3.0 with Fabio is sheer perfection. The shift in quality has been remarkably positive, to my ears.
-

Yes, that song is very beautiful. Glad you like Aqua too. :) Edu also has some beautiful ethereal songs on the first Almah album.

Oh there will be umbrage taken, and lots of it. ;) There will be so much umbrage that this thread will soon have 6 whole pages... Er, something like that.
I don't have any issues with the rankings, because mine are so fluid and I think it's a testament to how good they are that we each have different favorites.
The umbrage is taken with your description of Aqua. I think a fresh look is in order. Some listening with headphones and an open mind. Fair's fair - pick a (not double) Rhapsody album and I'll do the same. Not now - I just want to listen to Angra with the release of Omni and I'll be impatient, but maybe in a few weeks.
Angels Cry a Matos solo album? Au contraire! I've heard some of his solo albums and this isn't that. Rafael had a lot to do with this album, including some of the best tracks that I described in my rankings.
You should also give Angels Cry and Holy Land another go. However, if you don't like Andre (and I feel bad for those who are missing out on his unique voice), I'm pretty sure you can find live versions of all of the songs on those two albums with Fabio. The whole ProgPower Holy Land performance is on youtube. And they did an entire tour of it the following year as well. Plus, Fabio was with them when they did an Angel's Cry anniversary show.

Haha! I've heard one of Andre's solo albums and I should clarify, Angels Cry doesn't sound like them, but I have always been under the impression that Andre more or less steered the ship on Angels Cry, and Rafael didn't hold nearly as much influence in the band until a few albums down the road. Is that incorrect? I'm not actually privy to the songwriting credits, so I admit I could be wrong. I don't know about listening to AC or Holy Land again - I've heard them plenty of times, but I may give them one more full listen once the box set arrives (should be here in a couple weeks) just to hear them in CD quality. That could very well swing my opinion in a fair direction, but don't hold your breath. :) The live versions of Andre era songs with Fabio on them are fantastic, I'll admit. And I do still have a soft spot for the original Carolina IV, that is one of the best Angra songs ever.
Aqua... sigh. You got me there, fair's fair. I'll give it another go, and I'll think of a Rhapsody album as punishment that you may enjoy. You're in luck, as they have no double albums! Let me know when the time is right. Might want to go get your armor fitted and your sword sharpened. :lol

Temple of Shadows is seriously one of my quintaessential power metal albums. It's perfect.
If you want to substitute progressive metal for power metal, I agree with you. :) It's funny about Angra - people call them both in a positive way, and both in a negative way. I've had people tell me that they don't like Angra because they don't like prog, and that they don't like Angra because they don't like power metal. I guess the "progressive power metal" label is put to good use with them.

:lol
Andre has more song writing credits on both Angels Cry and Holy Land than Rafael, but Rafael does have a good bit, and on Angel's Cry I think the best ones were cowritten by him. I don't know much about the internal band relationships back then, but I don't get the impression that there was ever a time when Rafael wasn't very involved. I could easily be wrong, but I don't really think so. And he has never tried to distance himself from any of that music either - he's very proud of it.
I certainly do encourage you to listen to the original Angels Cry and Holy Land again (and more than once), but if you don't like Andre's voice, there isn't much you can do about it. Which is why I suggested you listen to the Fabio versions - if you think they're awesome, you think the albums are awesome. You just don't like the vocals. :) And Holy Land really is a masterpiece.
I don't have armor or a sword, but I could listen to Armor and Sword before listening to a Rhapsody album... :)

I think there's a blend all throughout their history. And no one ever agrees which albums are which either. "Holy Land is a progressive metal masterpiece" "Holy Land's not prog at all!" "Aurora Consurgens is too proggy for me, what happened to Angels Cry?" "Aurora Consurgens is Angra stepping back from the progressive elements..." :) Etc etc etc.
-
In my opinion, power metal is a genre that has to flirt with at least some traditional elements of progressive music to remain interesting. It is very rare/hard to find a band that plays generic sounding power metal that is really good. Angra is a band that is very good at blending both styles well enough (intentionally or not) to cause confusion amongst people. That's pretty cool.
I'm listening to Angels Cry now. I'll hold my opinions til I'm finished.

True.

I can agree with that. Whatever you want to call Angra, I think they've manage to change pretty constantly while still maintaining an identity.
I'm sure you're enjoying Angels Cry right now. :)

I hate to disappoint, but I'm still not all that warm on it. Honestly, a big part of it is Andre. That unbearable squeak he's always doing when he goes up with his voice, or that falsetto. Don't get me wrong, he can hit the notes and he holds them well, and some of the harmonies are nice, but his tone and timbre is unbearable to me. It sounds like there is no low end at all in his voice. It's all floating in this muddy head/falsetto range, sometimes I can't tell which he's using, and it is a really uncomfortable voice to listen to.
Otherwise the songwriting isn't bad, it's just not all that interesting to me. Never Understand is definitely the best on the album, and Carry On is good, but otherwise, there's just not much I really enjoy here. Let's not get started on Streets of Tomorrow, and especially not Wuthering Heights. There's actually some element of Edguy's "Theater of Salvation" throughout the album, as far as the general sound. There are brief moments where I'm thinking, "Yeah, this rocks" and then they go away. Then they come back a minute later. It's all over the place.
Now, the kicker. There's this Brazilian band called Aquaria. Lots of people who love Angra love them, and you would too. In fact, there's a moment of the title track that is pretty much flat-out referenced in one of their songs, and lots of people accuse them of being an Angra ripoff. The singer even has all the qualities I criticize Andre for. But somehow, I enjoy them. They take all the good elements of Angels Cry and make something bigger, better, and more sophisticated, including the singer. One could say this is a Beatles or Sabbath situation where they owe Angra a massive debt, and I agree, they would not exist whatsoever without Angels Cry. But using that same analogy, I've found that this album is only a close representation of what it wants to be (let's say any given Sabbath album since I am not a Sabbath fan) - not what it actually wants to be (insert metal album I think sounds like a better version of that Sabbath album). If that makes sense.
That's just my two cents. If it helps, I do actually have a newfound appreciation for it. I was reading about it while listening and wasn't aware of the various classical homages in there. Interesting to see Alex Holzwarth on this. Never knew that. Great drummer, very kind guy.

Um, perhaps you mean that Theater of Salvation has elements of Angels Cry rather than the other way around? :)
Like I said, if you don't like Andre it's just not going to work. I really like his voice, but I understand why others don't. I'm not even sure I really understand what head voice is, so I have no idea if he's using it or not; I just like him. I love his singing on a track like Time or Stand Away, or Angels Cry, etc. But, you've heard the original a bunch, you at least appreciate it more, so maybe you'll like those tracks even better when you hear Fabio sing them. :)
I'll check Aquaria out sometime, but if they sound that much like Angra, I'm not sure how well that will play with me. But you never know. :)
-
Oh - Streets of Tomorrow - I don't even know quite what I think about them. I'd consider it one of the weaker tracks - what I meant by the album losing some steam towards the end, and yet, I almost never skip it, and there are certain parts that I feel reward me for sticking with it. :) Wuthering Heights - it's OK. I heard the original and wasn't into it, so I guess I'm interested in what Andre does with it but this one I do skip sometimes.
-
Yeah. I'm just not crazy about early Angra. Once Rebirth came out they started getting very good in my opinion. Andre era isn't my thing. I do owe Aqua that listen, but that's for another day. :)
Oh and re: Theater of Salvation, yeah, that's what I meant. When I wrote that I was referring to how I was perceiving the album. And I'm not that crazy about Theater of Salvation, hence why it wasn't a positive comparison.

I still maintain that Andre's era isn't your thing with Andre singing. But you still need to listen to Holy Land from your boxed set - maybe not right away, give yourself time to come back to it later. But it should be listened to with headphones, while you are giving it your full attention and looking at the artwork which is very cool. Then if (or fine, when), you can't stand Andre anymore, go listen to the Fabio versions while also looking at the artwork. It will be worth it. :)
I don't think I cared for Theater of Salvation either; I've listened to it, but don't remember it.

No, believe me, I've heard the early Angra albums enough to know :lol It's mostly Andre's voice but the songwriting in general just isn't strong to me, and doesn't become strong until around Rebirth. They're not bad albums at all - that's reserved exclusively for Aqua - but when I want to listen to Angra I never reach for Angels Cry, Holy Land, or Fireworks - except for, usually, Z.I.T.O and Carolina IV - I reach for Fireworks to Omni, excluding Aqua. If they release a live album with Fabio I'll buy it of course, but as far as the albums proper are concerned, just not a fan of the first three. I didn't like 'em when I was a teenager, and I have a little more appreciation for them now but that's about it.
It's like Timo Tolkki era Stratovarius. I love Stratovarius! I love some songs from that era! But overall the songwriting is a few notches below what I want when I look to this band for some tunes. (Also, Angra has, in my opinion, never used good synth string sounds. The ones they use on Angels Cry are weeeeeak. Secret Garden presented the band in a whole new way, production, songwriting, etc. and I love it)
-
The song writing on Holy Land is incredible. And it can't be that bad if you're saying "The live versions of Andre era songs with Fabio on them are fantastic, I'll admit." I can see where songs like Holy Land and The Shaman might not be to everyone's taste, and I also understand the "not heavy enough" comments that some (not you) have made about the album in general. But even if they aren't to your taste, Holy Land is a pretty remarkable achievement and is pretty much unlike anything anyone in metal was doing.

I'm not a production person, as I think I've mentioned before, but I do think the string sounds have gotten better over the years. Aside from the string sounds, I've never really had a production related complaint about their albums. Interestingly about the songwriting though - I don't think Secret Garden was a huge shift. Or - it was a shift, but not unlike they've had between their other albums. I had so much trepidation about how Secret Garden would sound, but I was soon reassured upon listening to SG that they still had it - whatever it is that makes them as incredible as they are was still there.

I mean they're fantastic because Fabio is singing. I fully admit I'm a Fabio fanboy and will lap up anything with him on it. That said, I'm not a fan of listening to live releases, so it still wouldn't be something I'd willingly listen to more than once. I know Holy Land was unique for its time but even for the 90s other power metal bands came just a couple years after it to do things far more impressive to my ears. I already said they're not bad! They're just not strong enough for me to go back to. I have a couple hundred other power metal albums to listen to that I simply think are better, is what I'm getting at. :)
-
Well, getting back to an earlier discussion, I don't really think Holy Land is a power metal album at all. One day you will discover your wrongness about this album (as I realized I was wrong about Fabio). It'll happen when Fabio sings some of the songs, or perhaps you'll wake up from a strange dream about a long sea voyage e tudo o que se fez na agua, and feel compelled to listen to it... :)
Until then, I suppose we should get back to the topic at hand, the new album Secret Garden that will apparently be the title of this thread forever... :)

Oh Lethean. :lol I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I think I'm pretty fair to both Angels Cry and Holy Land relative to a lot of other power metal, even a lot of those on my own shelves. At this point you have a better chance of convincing me WDADU is a good album (hint: it is not) :lol
But yeah, that Secret Garden is a pretty cool album. I wonder what they'll do next. Maybe this Fabio guy will be their new permanent singer...
-
I think WDADU is a good album, but I just don't care for Charlie's vocals. :)
I feel like I should do an Angra album thread, like I've seen with the Iron Maiden and Queensryche threads. (Or just use this thread to do it). Except I wasn't around from the beginning, and my knowledge of strife and hardships is pretty limited, whereas Samsara knows (seemingly) everything about QR and so could provide much more background. Maybe some day...
Yeah, I do wonder if Fabio will stick around for their next album... :)
-
Do it. *raises fist in solidarity*

For those curious about the status of the current line-up, it seems that, besides Marcelo being an actual member, if Kiko returns someday, there's talk within the band that Angra could have 3 guitar players!

Anyway, it would be really cool to see Angra with Kiko, Marcelo and Rafael :metal
And, to be honest, even though it seems Kiko couldn't be happier in Megadeth right now, I don't think he (or Dirk Verbeuren) will be with them forever. Their lineups have changed so much over the years that It's safe to say Mustaine and Ellefson are the only permanent Megadeth mebers.
-
This thread makes me sad. All IMO, of course :
- Matos was Angra. They were dynamic and creative with him. Generic without. I like parts of albums since Matos left but it is not the same (and not as good).
- Tolkki was Stratovarius (moreso as he was practically the only songwriter). Same description as above applies.
- Viper's Theater of Fate (with Matos) is better than any post Matos Angra. And possibly any Angra with Matos. Theater of Fate is truly a classic for me.
- I don't like Matos' solo stuff except for a track here and there. But Symfonia, the collaboration of him and Tolkki, is great and better than any Angra or Stratovarius after they each left.
- I love - LOVE - Fabio Leone in Rhapsody but hate him with Angra. In the studio and live. Not a fit at all.
"Carry On"...
-
This thread makes me happy - to see people talking about Angra. :)
I love Angra with all 3 of the vocalists that they've had. I think Angra is extremely creative - I've thought that since becoming a fan of the band and for me that's been a big key to why they're so interesting, especially having to deal with so many line up changes. I love the Matos era but I love the other stuff as well; I have favorite albums and songs across the board.
I'm pretty sure I haven't heard Theater of Fate in full - I just heard a couple tracks but it's been a while, so I guess one of these days I should check it out. I liked some of Shaaman and some of Matos' solo stuff, but none of it resonated with me quite the same way that Matos-era Angra did.
I'm not a Rhapsody fan and was quite concerned that I wouldn't like Angra with Fabio, and I didn't think he would fit either. I like the way it's turned out though, and am glad to have been wrong.
-

Theatre of Fate is Andre's best IMO. An underproduced, raw slab of brilliance. They were really young and I don't think they had a clue what they were doing. But it is amazing. And after that Andre left for Angra.

The bolded part had me aghast, but then Rhapsody praise made me conflicted :lol

Symfonia is a great album. Too bad it ended up being a one off. Would have loved a few more.

Yes, I can! ;D
I know spanish is really close to portuguese, but sometimes not enough... I did my (and google translator's) best in english:
Question: Are you an effective member of Angra?
"Yes, that's what I'm told it's that today I'm an effective member of the Angra. The recording of Omni comes to consecrate this moment and what is spoken... of course I am speaking here what is spoken at the moment, and the future is always uncertain, however, as much as we have a future plan, many things can happen , but what is being talked about today is that, well, Kiko is living out of the country and playing one of the biggest metal bands in the world, his career only tends to grow, that's very good and he deserves all of that, and if someday, for some reason, he will play at Angra again, the idea is for the three guitarists to remain. This is the talk we have today. The conversation is very clear today: "Even if Kiko comes back, you do not go out". So I'm getting closer and closer to the guys, feeling more comfortable in the band, and now with the release of Omni, with the image of the clips, this, little by little, is consolidating the image before the fans of the band. Of course this is a long process, we are talking about a guy (Kiko) who, besides being a guitarist who is, the artist that he is, he is one of the founders, one of the first members along with Rafael and worked twenty and so with the band, so this is not a done thing, this is a process and I can only say that I am happy with the moment and that it has been not only a moment of many good crops, but also of many seeds for the future. I'm sure that the best is yet to come, for sure."
-
I would assume the band agrees with/stands behind what he said, or else they wouldn't have shared the video on their page (and perhaps would have told him to take it down). Although there's a lot of "I'm told" so I suppose they could be telling him this, and even mean it, but then still decide to just go with Kiko should he choose to return.
Also "effective" seems weird here and I guess that's a literal translation but if the question were to be asked in English, maybe it would be "are you a full member" (vs just a fill in).
-
Yes, full member I think it’s more accurate.
This is a process and Marcelo knows that he’s still building his space in the band, so I guess that’s why he’s saying things carefully. But it’s in band’s Facebook, so I guess it’s a band statement.
-
The conversation is very clear today: "Even if Kiko comes back, you do not go out".
Sounds definitive to me. It's nice that Marcelo's place in the band is reaffirmed.
-
Thanks for the translation, devieira73! :tup
It's pretty clear to me that Marcelo is a full member and Kiko has been out since he joined Megadeth. I think the question now is wether Marcelo is still with Almah or not, but I guess his main priority is Angra now (I hope so).
Btw, here's the re-recorded version of Z.I.T.O from Omni: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLE3OTSgBVI&feature=youtu.be

ProgPower then Chicago baby... 2018 is kicking all sorts of ass for American Angra fans. :metal

Cool. I put it on the calendar. We'll see. I am really surprised they have been able to put together a headline tour of the states like this. Much bigger bands are barely breaking even doing headline tours. These guys are obscure in the states. Hopefully the fans come out in droves and buy lots of merch, so they can have a successful tour.

Just bought VIP tix. An Angra headlining tour has been a dream of mine for so long. September is going to be such a happy month. Bring on summer. :metal

Let's all go to a show (or two) and try to bring a friend and make this tour as successful as possible. :) I don't think the venues are very big so I hope they packed and Angra feels encouraged to return.

Where are the venue's listed. I tried a couple of quick google searches, but can't find anything that lists the venues for the Canadian dates. Songkick had the US dates, but not the Cdn ones

That's what I'm finding. Hope that helps :)
I think all of the venues are listed here: https://enterthevault.com/artist.php?id=587
Excellent. Thank you. Not surprising at all on the Toronto venue. Bands of this type typically play in 1 of 2 venues... this being one of them. Saw Fates Warning there last year with about 80 other people. Metal bands like this will draw no more than 200 people. Even Evergrey couldn't get the place 1/2 filled.
-
This new one isn't grabbing me anywhere near as much as Secret Garden.

I'm kinda the same... though I've only given it 2 or 3 spins.

Yeah, that's about par for the course. I did see Blind Guardian in Toronto once and it was a bigger place that was packed. But Angra doesn't have that same kind of recognition. Hopefully the turn out will be respectable though.
I think Kiko should try to promote it and get a Megadeth fan or two to go to the shows.

Great instrumentation, but missing the vocal and chorus melodies of SG.

I think it needs more than that to grow on you. I might actually like it better than Secret Garden, but SG is awfully good. I think they're both great.

I want Fabio to be the bartender at ProgPower now.

got my ticket for the show in September. Looking forward to it.
So you guys think I should pick up Secret Garden? I enjoy Omni quite a bit, so if consensus is Secret Garden is as good, but maybe better melodies, I think I'd be all over that.

Yes. I think Omni is stronger, and whether you find the melodies on Secret Garden better is totally subjective, but SG was my favorite Angra album til Omni came out. It's got a super proggy song in Upper Levels, a couple lovely ballads (one acoustic), a killer cover of Synchronicity II, some classic high speed power metal, and a couple other interesting tracks. Also has Simone from Epica on the title track. Very good album. Lethean and I butt heads on how we rank Angra albums but I think we're in agreement that Secret Garden is worth buying if you liked Omni (I hope!) :)

I totally think you should get Secret Garden. I dunno about "better melodies" - that's a matter of taste and I like the melodies on just about everything Angra has done. Maybe it's less of a grower than Omni? Not sure.
-
Will add it to the list! Thanks guys.

Very good solo and killer drum and bass work!

Just watched a second time and really enjoyed it more than the first. I usually prefer simpler videos that just show the band playing, but this was interesting. A lot of little details in there I didn't see the first time (and probably more I missed this time too). The only thing I would say is that I wish it didn't jump frames so fast, but that's a complaint of mine, even with live performance dvds.

I hadn't then, but I have now. :) They're incredible live and everyone should catch them on this tour.
-
Yeah, first time seeing them live was at ProgPower and they slaughtered the room, only band that came close to them was Voyager imo. Can't wait for the show next Thursday. They're fantastic on stage.
-

Yea, really awesome band live. Omni was fantastic to see from front to back. It's the only album of theirs I have, so I wasn't familiar with the rest of the set but it all sounded really awesome.
Just sucks they did Black Widows web and the mic was off for the guest singer.
-
So I was pretty much an "Andre Matos or Bust" Angra fan and disregarded them after Holy Land. After reading some great reviews of their show at Progpower, I'm now checking out Sacred Garden and Omni.
This is some great stuff. I've always loved Rhapsody's Symphony of Enchanted Lands and like Fabio as a singer. It's cool to hear some heavier sounding guitars in the band on these two records. There is a live album with Sacred Garden, but I haven't really given it a spin yet...not quite ready for Fabio's take on my favorite songs from Holy Land and Angels Cry.

If you aren't aware, Omni's bonus track is a 2017 rerecording of ZITO. I strongly prefer it to the original, but then again, Fabio could belch into a microphone for an hour and I'd pay $15 for it.

I think i’ve said this before, but would LOVE to have Fabio with DT if James ever left :metal

I need new pants after thinking about this.
-
I wouldn't want that - aside from the obvious I don't want someone else singing for DT, I also don't want Angra to have to find a fourth singer. :P
They've put out two great albums with Fabio and I say keep it coming. :)
-
I wouldn't want that
yes you would

No I wouldn't.
-
Yes you would. You just don't know it yet. Maybe it'll hit you when you're about to fall asleep, or while you're working, or while you're taking a walk, or on a drive somewhere, listening to Angra and then Dream Theater. Over time you'll get it, and you'll want more, maybe after watching the next DT live release and wondering how Fabio would sound singing Beneath the Surface.
I call that the Lethean treatment. :lol
-
No I wouldn't. :) I did just imagine Fabio on Beneath the Surface. Sounds good, but not as good as James. ;)
-
:lol
"So! You want some mo'? Thees next one is a very, very sad song..."
-
Yep, that's exactly how it would be introduced. :)

We have two Angra threads. I legit have no idea which one to be posting in, and since this is the most recently active one, here goes. Caught Angra in Joliet last night. I am really annoyed with the turnout. It was - wait for it - deplorable. Seriously, I'd be surprised if they cracked 100 people in the entire place. But the guys were happy as hell to be there, they were super nice when I met them, and were all smiles and laughs. Caught a setlist at the end and even got Rafael to sign it. VIP stuff aside, the concert was incredible. And then someone was handing out free Obscura tickets after the show - not my type of music, but that was funny :lol

I'm tired of shows being booked in Joliet, though I prefer it to downtown Chicago (Joliet has that free garage down the street). I live up near the WI border, so it's a 70 mile drive for me to get to that venue. I did it once in 2012 for Iced Earth, but it was a bit of a pain - I prefer going to shows in Milwaukee now. Less transitions from highway to highway and 20 miles closer. The promoter needs some different venues - put them in some place a little smaller and it wouldn't be as obviously empty.
I'd have gone, but my concert going days are on hiatus now with two small kids. That's a killer set!

The Forge has a capacity of about 950 if I recall. It should have been packed. I saw Rhapsody there in 2012 and it was very well populated (back when it was Mojoes). I love that venue honestly, although this time I had to go into Chicago to pick up a friend and then go back to Joliet so it was like 4.5 hours on the road for me (and I only live 90 minutes from Joliet!). Most of the shows I see these days tend to be at the Concord Music Hall in Chicago, which is the most painless venue to access in that entire city imo - 2-5 minutes off the interstate and you're in their parking lot and in line. It rocks. Although the outrageous $25 parking fee annoys me, used to be 10, then 15, then 20... but that's the price of convenience. Slipped the guy $3 at the garage in Joliet :lol
I think it was a promotion problem because there is no way a band like Angra should have been playing to so few people. I feel so bad for them.

I wish I could go! Family duties come first for the next handful of years until my kids are older and one parent can handle bedtime alone.

I have a ticket for my show coming up. Whether I go will depend on what the Mrs. wants to do. Very rare date night. She's a headbanger like me, and knows OF Angra, but we'll see how the day plays out. There are three openers, so if we're able to get dinner and walk over, we most likely will. We'll see. The venue they are playing by me holds about 150 people. I think its listed at 250, but half of that is the space in the downstairs bar, which is underneath the main floor...so the joint is TINY.
-
Sucks for the low turn out, but the positive for you is a more intimate experience.
I would have checked them out again in NYC, but couldn't make it.

I brought my (second) Rhapsody flag for Fabio to sign (which he did). It just so happens that flag has ties at the end and instead of holding it in my hands, I did the metal thing and wore it as a fucking cape. I've never felt more glorious than wearing that thing during Spread Your Fire. Power metal flows through my veins :2metal:

So, the tour continues, and I really have nothing to say about the poor turnout in the midwest. :P If you like Angra at all, go see a show near you. They are incredible live. If you know nothing about them but like exceptional guitar players, bass players, drummers, and/or singers, go see a show near you. :)
-
Damn freaking right :metal
-
Almost off-topic, but i saw Shaman, the band with Angra's original singer, drummer and bass player, who got together after splitting up in 06 or 07, i'm not sure. They have a big following here in Brazil, amongst them, my wife, so i went with her (i was hoping for some old Angra songs, but they didn't play anything but Shaman songs). They sold out 2 days in São Paulo, but i'm not sure they will continue to tour, or if it was a one (well, two)-off.
Though i'm not a fan, the show was good, Confessori and Mariutti played extremely well, and Andre Matos sang almost everything perfectly.
-
That sounds really cool. I'd love to see Andre Matos live someday, either with Shaman or solo.
-
Also a bit off-topic, but Edu Falaschi is releasing an EP with the band he’s touring playing Angra’s songs, called “the glory of the sacred truth”, that has 2 original songs, a lot in the Angra’s style.
The japanese version has 4 Angra’s songs, live from this tour:

Just saw it too. I’m shocked. Felipe Andreoli said they were planning to have Andre with them for Angra’s 30th anniversary and now that’ll never happen, or a new Shaman album with him :'(

This one hurts... One of my favorite singers/artists. R.I.P. :'(

Wait, what?!?!?
-
The cause is reportedly a heart attack. Unbelievable...
-
Holy shit, he was only 47. :'(
-
I don't think heart attack has been officially confirmed. But, it seems to make the most sense with the limited information that people have. It's so sad. :(
-
Kiko also said Andre agreed to play together after 20 years, too sad it’ll never happen :'(
-
Yeah... Rafael had this great vision of a big reunion with all the members past and present.
-
Just can't believe this.
-
Holy crap. Saw it on Avantasia's FB feed and let out an audible "holy shit!"
-
Damn, thats some sad and surprising news. I didn't know his music outside of Avantasia but seeing he just performed with them makes it even more sad
-
My favorite singer is dead      ...I'm pretty gutted about this.
I never got to see him live either (should have in 2009, but the Work Visa's took too long to clear for them to play at ProgPowerUSA after being confirmed).
I'm likely going to spill my guts about this in my blog tonight.
-
Such awful news! :'(

Angels Cry and Holy Land were among the very first power metal albums that I had ever bought, back in 1998/1999. I loved them at the time, but quit following the band until only last year. Hearing that Andre is gone just sucks. Angra, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray were the bands that got me into power metal in the late 90's and also helped show me that metal bands existed outside of the US and Britain. I had alread loved Sepultura, but hearing Angra made me realize that incredible musicians existed around the world.
Here's to you, Andre...thanks for helping show me that great music can come out of countries that I would not expect.
-
Kiko posted a 22 minute video talking a lot about memories of Andre and what a great musician and songwriter he was. And how there were so many singers in Brazil who tried to sing like him, but never were able to.
It's all in Spanish, but you can turn on subtitles with English.

Yeah, this one really hurts. I first started listening to Angra back in 2000, and I'm almost positive it was because they kept coming up in these Dream Theater messageboards. I also loved his work in Avantasia but am totally unfamiliar with Shaman so I'll check out their albums soon.
-
One of my fav albums Andre did, possibly my fav was Shaman's Reason. Such a beautiful, unique album.

Anyone fan of the genre should listen to the first Shaman album, Ritual. A by now forgotten masterpiece, the best album Angra never recorded and all in all a great power metal album with brazilian music influences here and there.
Count me in among those deeply saddened at his sudden, unfair and shocking death. By now my tastes have changed and I don't really follow Angra anymore, but back in they day I was hugely into them and following Matos' carreer was an obvious consequence. I have seen Maiden, Metallica, Dream Theater, many great artists and fantastic concerts, but still I count the Shaman gig in Italy in 2002 as one of the best concerts I've ever seen, the intensity was amazing. Met Andrè before the show, talked to him in italian because he was fluent with that as well, he was just this happy and positive person all the time.
In later years as I said my tastes have changed so I didn't really follow what he was up to anymore - did he even continue his solo carrer? so when Tobias Sammet posted a pic of him on stage with Avantasia I was like "Oh, Matos, look who's back!"..... to think that literally a few days after he would pass away is unreal.
I also feel for Kiko, the poor guy is alone and hasn't nobody to talk to and he vents online, sharing his thoughts with fans trying to make sense of it all. Very human moment from him.
RIP Andrè, his music will carry on!
And to quote the magnificent and touching "Fairy Tale" from Shaman's Ritual.......
"Little lady, your tale has an end
For your love to the skies was sent
He's turned into sparks that shine with the stars...
And by night he will always be there
For his lady to stare
And thus he's never died"
-

Well, it's not hard in that sense, he's not there crying, he's actually smiling most of the time recalling the good times with Andrè, but he says that he can't get a hold of other band members on the phone and so he did the video.... he just wants to talk like we all do when something bad happens and we need to cope and vent, a very human reaction.
-
Yeah just watched it. A nice touch, more of a celebration. You can hear some regret in his voice for not talking to him for 20 years.
-
I was Lucky enough to see Angra twice with Andre back in the days and each time, I was blown away. RIP Andre, may you be in a better place now. Good bye!

Andre was a strange one for me.
Theatre of Fate is tied with a few others as my favorite CD of all time. Angels Cry and Holy Land are close.
Fireworks and Ritual are close but a little behind.
Soldiers of Sunrise, the one Symfonia (with Timo Tolkki) and the one Virgo (with Sasca Paeth) are others I enjoy a lot.
But that's it. The others I like a few tracks but never listen all the way through. Andre's output was light, to the point that I googled him a couple of times a year to see if he was doing anything.
The bottom line for me...several albums of brilliance, a tone and emotion that I truly adore; and yet a case of "what might have been" as his last studio album, I believe, wss 2012. I am very grateful for the Viper Live album in 2015. But I wish he had landed in a more productive band environment.
Regardless, Angels Cry, Holy Land and, especially for me, Theatre of Fate, will live forever.

I was surprised to see the news also on the site of Italy's most famous newspaper, I didn't expect it. The brief article mentioned that Matos was "one of the finalists" to replace Bruce Dickinson alongside James LaBrie and obviously Blaze Bayley - can we consider this, by now, an incorrect rumour that just won't die?
Steve Harris is on record about Iron Maiden being a british band, he wanted a british singer all along. I don't think Matos, LaBrie or even Kiske or the scottish Doogie White were ever seriously considerated, Steve wanted a british singer 'cause they're a british band.
-

Scottish is British.
-
According to Mick Wall’s Run To The Hills, it was down to Blaze and Doogie.
-
Should have went with Doogie White.
And usually I know the difference between England and Great Britain, but apparently not today. My point was that I thought it's out there (I tried but couldn't find the quote) that Steve Harris didn't want a foreign singer and so Matos, just like Kiske and LaBrie, were out of the game from the start.
Matos would have been excellent of course, but he probably would have been seen like a Ripper move - you lose your singer, just get someone who idolizes him and sings like him. Steve Harris was probably too pround and / or stubborn to go for that....
-
It's the modern way to say UK (GB) rather than the specific country that makes up the United Kingdom Of Great Britain.
If I tell someone I used to live in Wales, I get funny looks and most have no idea, then I say UK, it seems to make sense.

Big bump.
My taste in Angra is a running joke amongst all my friends because I think Omni is their best album. Looking at a very big power metal group I'm in, dozens of comments in, almost everybody has ranked Omni as their least favorite Angra album. Really bums me out. I can't tell if people are just biased because Kiko isn't on it other than a guest spot, and because Fabio just doesn't belong because fans of Brazilian metal bands are weird like that. The production is better than almost any other Angra album, it has lots of variety, it has great traditional power metal anthems, it has a very strong vocal performance from Fabio, and there's a great Rafael song. Each member plays their heart out. I don't get why it's such an unloved album by so many Angra fans. Okay, there's no Andre. People still love the Edu albums. Okay, there's no Kiko or Edu... so what? Still a killer album...
I'll die on this hill for as long as I'm breathing; Omni is a fantastic album that gets WAY too much undeserved hate.

You are not alone on this, I also think it's a incredible album, indeed, it can be their best! My faves are Holy Land, Temple of Shadows, Acqua and this one, with an honorable mention to Secret Garden. So... I'm kind of a weird fan too.
Just a heads up, Kiko will release his new solo album, Open Source on 17th July. It already have a new song on Spotify, EDM. By the way, I think his album "Sound of Innocence" is really strong, with Virgil Donati and Felipe Andreoli.

By the way, I think his album "Sound of Innocence" really strong, with Virgil Donati and Felipe Andreolli.
I had no idea Kiko had a new solo record coming out, and so soon! Thank you for the heads up! :metal
-
Cool, The Walrus!
By the way, I think that Acqua is so underrated because of its poor mix. If you are interested to give the album a second chance, start by listen to these new mixes made by Felipe Andreoli:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFYB9pXOqp8

-
I have given that album more than enough second chances, but I can guarantee at least one person here has probably seen those and loved them
-
I thought Omni was pretty well received overall, at least at the time it was released. But there's always going to be a portion of fans in any fan base who will prefer the old stuff no matter how great the new stuff is. Plus, you have a history with 3 singers and there's been drama and then you have an important member like Kiko leaving. Add to that Andre's passing was a huge shock and I think some are even extra loyal to him right now.
I hope those who are down on it eventually give it another shot. It's such a great album.
-
Love Omni! I really prefer the last two records over most of the older stuff, but these are more "prog" and less "power", so that could be why many fans don't appreciate them that much.
And call me crazy, but I think Fabio is the best Angra vocalist, no doubt.

I think my top 5 Angra albums are these two I mentioned, Temple of Shadows, Holy Land and Rebirth. I gravitate much more the their prog metal side rather than the more power metal side.
As far as the vocalists, I think Andre and Edu are fantastic, but I enjoy Fabio's vocals the most :metal

From Angra's Facebook:
Today we celebrate 10 years since the release of our seventh studio album, “Aqua”.
Recorded between February and July / 2010 at Norcal Studios in São Paulo, “Aqua” had two singles released: “Arising Thunder” and “Lease of Life”. The album revolves around the play "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare, which tells the story of Prospero, an aristocrat who has supernatural powers and who was exiled to an island due to political disagreements. There he causes a shipwreck and brings his enemies close to him, thus executing his revenge.
In August 2010 we also started the Aqua World Tour, which started in Brazil and passed through Japan, the United States, Taiwan, Italy, Chile, among other countries.
To celebrate these 10 years, the album is being remixed and remastered by Brazilian producer based in Los Angeles, Adair Daufembach. The first single in the new mix is The Rage Of The Waters. Soon it will be on streaming services and is already available on our official YouTube channel (link in the bio!)
YESSSS!

About freaking time. I might finally revisit Aqua! Maybe. Possibly. Some day. :lol

Aqua was a terrible album. Meh.

Yeah, Aqua wasn't great. Not really caring about this. It might make me revisit it though.

I've only listened to the first four tracks so far but I agree, this Aqua remix is fantastic! :metal Lots of power, passion, and vocal layers

Someone please update the thread title :lol

Maybe it can get updated when the next album comes out. :)
-
Secret Garden kicked Omni's ass anyway.
-
You think so? I think Secret Garden is great (but I hate the title track), but Omni is.... especially special. :)

Angra is preparing the release of their next album, entitled "Cycles of Pain"
"Cycles of Pain" brings different perspectives on human pain and the cycles that involve it. While pain is inevitable, it is also an part of growing and learning. By recognizing and facing these cycles, we can discover our inner strength and find a path to healing and transformation. It is an invitation to reflect on the complexities of human pain, addressing topics such as loss, disillusionment, loneliness and despair, but also bringing a message of resilience and hope.
The combination of elements on the cover - an angel of death with bright, worn wings adorned with religious and pagan symbols, a dark forest with fire and rain, the prevalence of Brazilian elements - conveys a representation of the idea that pain is a recurring and transformative experience, encompassing spiritual and earthly aspects and encouraging us to delve into the depths of our own pain, explore its many dimensions and find strength and healing in the journey of these cycles.
It is my pleasure to share with you the cover of Angra’s new album, Cycles Of Pain! The artwork was made by Erick Pasqua with layout by Jonathan Canuto. Also in the great news department, we’re pleased to announce our new record label for Europe and America, Atomic Fire! We’re pretty excited about this new partnership. The album will be released November 3rd worldwide and November 1st in Japan by JVC.

Angra + Rhapsody mash up.... Sounds great!!!
-
Definitely it's a bit of a call back to their more power metal days, but still with some killer prog instrumentation. The production sounds awesome!
-
I'm really digging this new single! :metal
-
The band recorded a new acoustic live album the other day, which included two songs from the new album. Any ideas on when this will be released? It most likely won't be this year, though, with the studio album coming very late this year.

The title track played in some internet/radio station... this one is really amazing, kinda of Angra meets Queen! :omg: :metal

Angra is in a great phrase! There's a great material in their history, no doubt, but I'm not a saudosist of the previous eras. Honestly I like more their present sound.

What a great album :metal
-
Just listened to Cycles of Pain for the first time and I can confidently say that this is their best album since Temple of Shadows (and I've liked them all quite a bit). This is a glorious night to be an Angra fan!
-
Yes, this album is amazing!! I'm not totally sure about Tears of Blood, just because its very operatic style, that I'm not a fan of. But, otherwise, killer song after another. I love OMNI very much, really, but this one has a very inspired more melodic and prog edge, just beautifully done.
-
I seriously can't get over how great this album is!
Vida Seca at the moment is my favorite song and it's the one I hope will be the next single. Ride Into the Storm, Tide of Changes, Cycles of Pain, Dead Man on Display, and Tears of Blood are also among their best songs ever.
Angra and Fabio were truly a match made in heaven!
-
I'm slowly catching up on the last 23 years of the band that for whatever reason, I ignored.
I now have all the Edu era albums, trying to find the 2022 remix of Aqua, which is proving quite impossible.
Looking forward to hearing the new one and OMNI, both in the mail.

For legal reasons/problems with Edu, they only released it on digital plataforms. But it really brings new life to that album, since the original mix/master has a bit of tiny sound. Well, almost no one thinks so, but Acqua is one of my 5 favorite albums by them (along with Holy Land, Temple of Shadows, OMNI - also a controversial opinion - and Cycles of Pain)
BTW, for my taste, Fabio is my favorite Angra's singer from all eras.

Yeah! And they really let him shine on the new album, what a beast! :metal :metal
-
I think everyone is really shining in the new album. I must mention I think Bruno/Felipe are really one of the very best rhythm sections on metal today. Incredible how they manage being super present, with a lot of groove and never overplaying the songs IMO.
But... agreed, Fabio is really destroying here!! :o :metal

I am aware that it was only released in digital format, but I can't find it anywhere to download, I know it's on YT, but I am looking for FLAC files to buy.
Yes it's a good album, but the mix sounds terrible on the CD.
-
Is liking Omni really controversial? That album is phenomenal.
As for Cycles of Pain, only a couple listens in but so far so good.
Bruno and Felipe are indeed awesome. I think Felipe is pretty much the bass player in metal. More people need to hear him
-
Unbelievable, huh? But it's what I gather from a lot of magazines or youtube reviewers opinions, also commenting about the Angra's fan base opinions. The overall feel that I have it's like Angra didn't release anything worth since Temple of Shadows. Maybe they don't accept that the band had distanced from power metal since then. I saw myself a lot of comments on Youtube where many fans don't like the more prominent prog metal influences in their sound nowadays. Go figure!
-
Hahaha. I remember reading complaints about prog when pretty much all of their albums came out, except the Matos since I wasn't a fan at the time. Even Angels Cry is pretty proggy.
Omni rules.
I'm onto my 4th listen of Cycles of Pain and keep liking it more.
-
IMO, Omni was a massive letdown after Secret Garden which might be my fav Angra record. I think it's amazing. I'll check the new one soon, good to hear the positive comments on it.
-
For no deep reason at all (it is certainly not a lack of appreciation for Fabio Lione or for the band Angra) I never really cared for this third era of the band. I guess there was always some other more interesting or inviting thing to explore music wise. I like the song Magic Mirror, maybe one day I'll finally see what I have missed. I didn't even finish to listen to the albums with Edu, I checked out after Aurora Consurgens and even that album is something I just don't remember.
-

I like a lot Secret Garden, but I think the band was a bit undecided about the singer or the musical path they would follow and you can feel listening to it. Although it has quality and great songs, it sounds a little lacking in cohesion. Are you sure about OMNI? I think it's a clearly progression from Secret Garden with more focus and a band identity.
-
I love both albums but I do prefer Omni. The title track of Secret Garden lowers it in my personal rankings; definitely not my thing. But it's a great album otherwise.

Yeah, I can fully agree with that, but for me, it doesn't affect it for me.
Am I sure about Omni? .............I guess I'll rephrase the question and ask did I give Omni a fair go? Probably not.
-
I liked Secret Garden quite a bit when it came out but it didn't have a lot of staying power. It's been years since I listened to it in its entirety, and the only songs I get the urge to revisit are Storm of Emotions, Violet Sky, and Silent Call. Omni was a significant improvement in my opinion--it sounds more inspired, diverse, and epic.
Cycles of Pain is on a whole other level though--top tier Angra for sure. I still haven't warmed up to Faithless Sanctuary or Generation Warriors, but the rest of the album absolutely rules.
-
You should definitely revisit Newborn Me (one of their best opening tracks imo) and Upper Levels, which is just an incredible song.
Also Final Light is pretty cool too.
-
I'll also add Black Hearted Soul and Upper Levels.
-

There is a speed version of this song (Japanese bonus) with Fernanda Lira in a duet with Lione. Have you heard it yet?

Been a minute since I listened to any Angra.

I just listened to it, but I think I prefer the original version. I really like the operatic/theatrical vibe they chose and Amanda's vocals are incredible. Just wish Kiko recorded the original solo as well.
-
I liked both. Loved both duets.
-
I just tend to go back to Angels Cry and Holy Land. I do enjoy the other records, but the don't always have the staying power that those two albums do.

Picked up Cycles of Pain on CD over the weekend (to get signed at ProgPower) and a few listens in and I'm LOVING it. I think I may like it more than Omni, but it may just be the freshness of it giving it priority, but even with only 3 full listens, I'm really liking this.

Best album of the 3rd era (Andre - Edu - Fabio), and best album since Temple of Shadows. Probably in my top 3 after Holy Land and ToS.
Can't find any filler in the album, and I thoroughly enjoy Tears of Blood, both versions. Would love to listen to a version of it with Amanda Somerville instead of Vanessa Moreno. But both girls ROCK
-
Didn't really know where to post this, but here's Fabio singing Pull Me Under https://youtu.be/A8MmgEP6AVo?si=e2KqbOMWQsweYVFg
Spoiler alert: he didn't really learn the lyrics at all :lol

That could have been really awesome if he'd learned the lyrics. He sounded good. He's a fan of Dream Theater so maybe he thought he knew it but when it came time to sing he didn't or he forgot... I dunno.

Angra did record a DVD on 70.000 Tons of Metal:
https://whiplash.net/materias/news_698/358459-angra.html
Unfortunately, the setlist was shorter than the ones from the regular shows of this tour:

Anyway, better than nothing and the setlist is kind of supplementary to the OMNI Tour DVD.

Hum... it's working here. Maybe you have to subscribe to Angra's youtube channel (it's my case)? Maybe because this version was released only in the regular brazilan version and youtube is blocking for non brazilians? I don't know.
