Title: Obfuscation's "This derphead again?" v.3 Roulette ITS ALL OVER!!!
Post by: Obfuscation on October 13, 2014, 01:40:48 AM
Yeah so my song roulette turn is about to come up soon so to get things rolling, I'm going to start this by asking and seeing if there is anybody interested in being part of my roulette the third time around. What my 3rd roulette will consist of is pretty much just a continuation of how its been the last 2 times which you can check out here: v.1 https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=27848.0 and v.2 https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=40868.0.

Only differences will be that there might be a couple of more bands/artists added to the banned list that you see in v.2 that I will update in a day or 2. Also this might be my roulette with the most rounds since I'm thinking of doing between 8-10 but might not do that much depending how things go and how the participants feel. Also if I can keep chugging out results quickly to have this done in about a month or less. Scoring will be the same ol' 1-10 scale since I don't want to slow myself down with doing or coming up with unique scoring systems.

So yeah, I think that's all I need to say so far about my roulette and will add anything more important info as the date for my official start gets nearer and the participants start piling up.

Okay so I updated the Banned Bands list a bit. Might be missing some still but I think we will be okay. Have only 3 participants so far but there's still enough time for anybody else to join so no rush.

You'll need it. I was wondering, do you always send classical music on roulettes? Not complaining though (I love that stuff), just curious about your choices.

It's my favorite music. For specific themes, I'll send other music if it's easier, but in general classical music is what I send the most now, and specific composers are virtually never banned by anyone, so I can always send.  :P

Tyrias - Billy Clyro: Spanish Radio

So I've been neglecting rock quite a bit since nothing really has grabbed my attention for quite some time in the rock realm and this song started off kinda like that. But while listening to the song go on and hearing how it sounded like it was growing into something bigger and leading up to something, it started to grab my attention. If nobody has noticed, I like songs that do that and in which the climax pays off and is actually good. The climax of this song is at the end and is actually good and I like it. Only thing I didn't like was how short it was and felt.Everything else of the song was good, vocals and instruments(and liked that it had trumpets in it for some reason). But the song prior to the beginning was just okay to me that without the ending, I probably listen to this song or maybe better worded, looked forward to listening again.
Score: 7/10

Lucien - Lucien: Zephyros

So first time I have ever gotten someone to send me their own work in a roulette which is actually nice. Seeing as it was from you, I knew it couldn't be anything else but a classic piece. It was quite good as well which I'm happy to say. It reminded of lots of other classical pieces I have heard whether in a game or movie which is good. This song obviously has a 1st and 2nd half to it with me preferring the 1st. It starts off nice and slow and build to a epic, frantic sounding section with a nice fast melody played by quite a couple of instruments. The 2nd half continues the sound and atmosphere of the 1st but to a as good extent as the 1st half. Still quite a good piece and look forward to hearing more from you. P.S. The soundcard version sounded pretty cool too.
Score: 8/10

sneakyblueberry - Gatherer: Pretty Much

So even though my bands list doesn't really show it, I have listened to quite a few hardcore bands and music. Its really a hit or miss for me genre but when I find a band or song that works for me, I enjoy the heck out of it. This song has all the right things going for it in sound with the instruments and vocals fitting together quite nicely. Most of the song, for instance the intro and slower sections I feel are really good but the weakest part of the song is the chorus. It just really doesn't do much for me when it comes up which kinda sucks cause the rest of the song is pretty good while the ending I find as well to be okay though.
Score: 7/10

adace - Celtic Fantasy Music - Druidic Dreams

So another song influence and only really classical instruments being used. This one as well I got a huge vibe of mostly fantasy video games and movies I have seen before. This one was really good even though if you pay attention to each section separately, you notice how simple they are but man do they meld and work just great together. The drums and string section when playing have a sound that makes it feel like you're in the world where this type of music would be played in. I also like how while the song seems to be mostly upbeat and have a happy tone to it, has a melancholy feeling to it in certain parts which I like. Overall, good song.
Score: 9/10

Sacul - David Maxim Micic - Where is Now?

You caught a lucky break that I didn't buy this album off of bandcamp a month ago and that the song you picked wasn't one of the ones I had heard before because man, this song was awesome. The intro right away is great and another song that is influenced by classical music especially with sections that heavily feature the classical piano and violin. The guitar in this is just great and sounds good with an awesome guitar solo at the end. Have to give a shoutout to that bass to that when it takes the spotlight, man it sounds nice. Am really glad that this song feature vocals instead of just being an instrumental song but with the vocals being used as instruments since they don't say any lyrics but sound great. That scatting/doo-wop vocal part just fits in good with the song. It has the perfect length for it and liked how it sounds and reminds me of lots of other bands and artists I like but has its won sound. I could say lots more about this song but want to make this too long so I will just say that I enjoyed it.
Score: 10/10

LordCost - The Ocean: Firmament

Another guy who caught a lucky break with this song since I have listened quite a bit to The Ocean but not really this song since its not on their last album which most of my listening to them has come from. What can I besides all the pros and cons it has is that for me its a solid song. Like the guitar riff and chorus that it breaks into even though I don't think the vocals are bad but not the greatest thing ever in certain parts. I will just say for me the vocals are the weakest thing about this song. Everything else is just really good. Especially that break it has halfway in in which I really liked the drum work in it while the mood the guitar set up. Then it breaks loose and kicks off with a good guitar solo with great rhythm work from the drum and bass and probably the best vocal part as well. So yeah, a solid song.
Score: 8/10

Scorpion - Caladan Brood: Wild Autumn Wind

So Scorpion sent in my opinion the most interesting and hardest song for me to rate this round. Not because of the genre it was but because I had a hard time determining how much I liked it. The first time listening the mistake I made(if you see it that way) was listening to this song at night while laying before going to sleep. I didn't make it to the end before I feel asleep. But now I will that's because of how relaxing this song actually is depending on how you look at it. Some might not think that cause of vocals but I'm used to vocals like this even though for me they are a hit and miss for me lots of times in Black Metal but in this song, they just work. The atmosphere this song is just amazing for me with being epic among many other adjective that can be used to describe it. Also besides being another song heavily influenced by classical music and all, halfway it changes a bit while still in the same mood at first but feels like its coming to an end but done almost perfectly. Has guitar solos kicking in for it in the final act and some instruments like the drums kick it up a notch and in come the decent clean vocals. I mean this song is just awesome and am glad it last 13 minutes instead of 7.  :metal
Score: 10/10

Nekov -  Autumn Moonlight: Ghost

So Nekov went after my enjoyment of post-rock music which I'm always glad to see people do since I really do like that type of music. He sent me a band I don't think many people at all have ever heard of as well. The negative of post-rock is how samey many bands can sound like and even songs do. This one started off like that first which had me a bit worried and hoping to see something happen to make it good. Don't get me wrong, the beginning is god but its something I've heard be done many times already I feel like. Then comes the heavy part which was actually something heavier than I was expecting and is good. Also like how it wasn't really short to give it the feeling that it was just thrown in for the hell of it but actually given its moment. Then when it goes back to the melody introduced in the intro, its actually been infected by the energy brought in by the heavy section and impacted by it. This causes it to become a good song for me cause even though its also something that's been done before, it sounds really good in this song and leads to a good ending. I like it.
Score: 8/10

So the results.

Tyrias: 7
Lucien: 8
sneakyblueberry: 7
adace: 9
Sacul: 10
LordCost: 8
Scorpion: 10
Nekov: 8

So for round 2 the theme is Pop. Send me a pop song whether it be a recent one since I haven't really kept with any lately or one from a couple of year or decades back that you think is good of course and has upbeat sound to it. Throwing somewhat of a oddball here right now for me just to see what I get so yeah. Let's do it. Also I promise not to lie anymore about when I will post results but am expecting to have this round done before Thanksgiving. Yay!

Score: 10/10
:eek Yeah the song's pretty amazing, but so does that album and the rest of David's work. I hope you consider buying the record now ;) . Btw, the pop song has to be just pop, or could it be mixed with another genres like metal or electronica?

I have your same thoughts about Firmament (apart that I don't dislike the vocalist), the best way to describe it it's that's a solid song, I would have rate it as you do!

For any of you having questions about the Pop category, it doesn't have to be popular or just strictly a Pop song. As long as it has some pop influence in it, its fine by me. It can be mixed with any genre as well.

Tyrias - Awolnation: Wake Up

So I'm familiar with who this is and like some of his songs that I listen to but they've really been only his most popular ones. I also heard some others that I found to be sorta on the average side. Don't ever remember hearing this song but am glad it was sent cause I dig it. I like the beat it has which I think goes great with the vocal melodies that are littered throughout this song. As I hope most of you have noticed, I'm a big fan of choruses and this one has a good one and I like it. But nowhere being the best or catchiest that I have heard. So overall a good song on my opinion but nothing really that grabs at me and gets stuck with me.
Score: 7/10

Nekov - Florence & the Machine: No Light, No Light

Another artist that I'm somewhat familiar with and have like some of the popular songs I've heard from them but never heard this one. First of all, she does have a great voice and I like it. Also the music she sings with is perfect for her voice which this song shows. The beat and melody this has, especially in the chorus of this song is just great because of her voice and how layered it is and everything. This is a chorus that'll get stuck in my head which usually end up being the pop songs I tend to like the most. Every other part of the song is good but the star of it is the chorus like I've been saying a million times. Also, weird video but not the weirdest I've ever seen by far.
Score: 8/10

Sacul - Destiny Potato: Love Song

So poppy metal bands are always a hit or miss with me because I feel like lots of them are just a bit boring for me and I feel like they have more potential than they usually show. Also lots of the ones I've heard just song similar to each other or very generic rock bands with just heavy guitar tones. This song almost right away took those worries away. As the song kept going on and I was getting used to the hook and melody that would pop up in it, the more things kept on popping up until the blast beat section came up and grabbed me by surprise and at first I would've said that wouldn't work that great in a song like this but, damn does it sound awesome in a song like this. Then in the mellow section, I think the star is the bass even though its a really simple bass riff but it just has an awesome tone and cool sounding riff and I usually think that the bass deserves more love in music. But yeah, I just enjoyed this song and will be listening to it many more times of course.
Score: 9/10

adace - CHVRCHES: The Mother We Share

So after hearing and seeing this band's name almost everywhere last year it seemed like, I never actually checked them out. I should have a long time ago. I tend to like synthpop music fairly easily but for me to really say a like a band or song from this genre, it has to be really good or not to samey from everything else out there.
This song does that mostly with its chorus which is easily memorable from the first listen and a good one at it. The one thing that helps the chorus set apart is the singer's vocals which are great for this type of music. I also like the somewhat melancholic sound the song has while at the same time sounding like a somewhat happy song. Wish it was a bit longer though.

Score: 8/10

Scorpion - Nightingale: The One

Music like this is usually not my cup of tea but of course I was willing to give this one a chance. Also seeing that Dan Swano was part of this and I've liked quite a few things he has worked on, made me optimistic. The more times I listened to it, I felt like I liked it more and more but still just came to the conclusion that at most for me, its an okay song. There's really nothing that stands out for me for the song besides the keyboards cause they are the loudest thing or I guess more noticeable thing from the song but just how simple and repetitive they were really didn't make the song that much of an enjoyable experience. Everything else from vocals, drums, guitars, and bass I just thought were okay and yeah. Just an okay song that I probably won't listen to after this is done.
Score: 6/10

Lucien - Duran Duran: New Moon on Monday

I think just about everybody here as heard of Duran Duran at least once like I have but in my case, I never sought out to listen to them. Like you said Lucien in your message, this is a song that will make you feel warm inside. The whole song pretty much feels like a chorus since I guess it because of how many times its repeated but that okay cause I like it and the vocals are great in it. Pretty repetitive song but its not one that gets old which I guess speaks testament to how people keep on talking about them and listening to them after so many years since it just sound like timeless beat and vocals. That being said, I also don't usually listen to or check out old pop bands but do see myself checking out more Duran Duran.
Score: 8/10

sneakyblueberry - Tears for Fears: Head Over Heels

So look at that. Another 80s band after another which wasn't what I was expecting at all. So I prefer the more rockish and synthy sound of this song to the Duran Duran one but I feel like I prefer the Duran Duran vocals after its said and done. But that doesn't mean the vocals in this song are great or catchy cause they are. This has more of a bigger and more epic feel and sound to it which I like. Especially the part before the outro that leads to a cool guitar riff and another guitar solo which I think is pretty cool. I mean this song has many things going on for it and that it just sound like a song that evolves throughout which is another thing I'm always a fan of. So after all is said and done, I think I prefer this song a bit more over the Duran Duran which I just felt it was inevitable for me to make the comparison between the two.
Score: 9/10

LordCost - Fjokra: Slyrex

So this song I honestly wouldn't consider pop but since you did mostly cause of the first part and all, I let you choose since I mean, you choose the songs you send. I have to say though, this is an interesting song. First off, the singer in this is pretty damn good so in that category the song is solid. This song also has many different moments and moods in it which are pretty interesting and give the song a atmosphere that I dig in some moments. For example, that part before the ending climax of the song really helped it feel much more epic. Even though it feels like lots of ideas mixed and pasted together, they actually work pretty good together. I just find the first half of the song to be a bit okayish for me in not being a bad boring song, but not being the best either. The star of this is the 2nd half like I already mentioned. But honestly, not really a pop song for me but did like it.

Score: 7/10

Results:
Tyrias: 7+7=14
Lucien: 8+8=16
sneakyblueberry: 7+9=16
adace: 9+8=17
Sacul: 10+9=19
LordCost: 8+7=15
Scorpion: 10+6=16
Nekov: 8+8=16

So for the third round. Send me a song that would feel right at home being played at the end of the world.

Also for anybody worrying about there being long moments between results. Don't worry, each round should be done at least in a week or earlier. I won't let this die down and just stop. I will try as best as I can to post them up quicker.

Great you liked Destiny Potato  ;D - you should check their debut, it's one of the best (and funniest) albums of this year.

Btw, what kind of world's end are we talking about? A zombie apocalypse? The Earth being slowly consumed by the Sun or a black hole? Or something epic like a huge asteroid that destroys everything? 'Cause I can either send you something epic or melancholic/sad.

I'm sorry, I thought it was more pop than other songs I considered to be more rock than pop. In order to avoid rock I went to experimental :\ Other kind of songs that came in my mind were Italian pop songs or something related to the disco or rap (which are the most popular genres in my country now), but it was very risky

Stoked you like the Tears for Fears.  Songs From the Big Chair is a classic album, and is pretty proggy in places - for a pop album anyways.

So I apologize for these several days of delay and silence. That's what unexpected events in life do to you. Had to deal with some family issues and internet issues but now all is solved and well and should actually go more smoother and faster than the start of this roulette actually. So once I apologize and this shall be my last excuse for anything in this roulette. Anyways, results time. Also some write-ups towards the end are shorter and less detailed cause of what was previously mentioned.

Lucien - Rush: The Garden

Well obviously I didn't listen to the Clockwork Angels album after my last roulette since I never listened to this song and surprised to see a Rush song submitted this round. While ultimately I wouldn't consider this song as fitting in a end of the world category, I put it more into the end of someone's life or memories. That's influenced by the lyrics of the song and how I interpret them. Musically speaking, it does fit the sound of closing something out or the end of something as well so musically it fits the bill. Not as drastic or I guess earth shattering of a song to represent the end of the world but can represent the end of something in other ways. Plus I liked it.
Score: 7/10

Nekov - Angra: Fireworks

Maybe its just me and how this song was sent after Lucien's submission so I listened to it after the Rush one but they ended up sounding very similar to each other in almost every way that I thought I ended up listening to another Rush song lol. So to keep this short and seeing how I mentioned they were both very similar sounding to me, almost everything I said about the Rush song can be said about this one. The only thing that brings the score of this one down a notch is that the sound or atmosphere of it doesn't really portray the end of the world or anything like that to me. In actuality, it sounds really upbeat to me in many moments.
Score: 6/10

Scorpion - Swallow the Sun: The Morning Never Came

So this song really does fit in quite a bit into sounding like a song that should be played at the end of the world in my opinion of course. Even the name of the band can cause the end of the world with the song title being the result of that. I guess why the sound and atmosphere of this song really works is because it falls into the genre of Doom Metal which is really almost what the whole genre is about. Impending doom. Since the song really doesn't change much though, the 9 minutes can actually feel pretty long if you keep listening to the song. And the vocals are alright. Overall it fits the theme and everything and is pretty good but just doesn't convey a hopeless picture in my mind.
Score: 8/10

sneakyblueberry - Spook the Horses: Paper Harbours, Hanging Skies

So first off, the band's sound regarding guitar tine and the guitar riffs iu this song fit the theme that I picked for this round which is a given seeing as this is a post-metal band and this genre usually has that. What usually doesn't do it for me though are the vocals which I can see why people use them for music like this or some people think it fits the theme but I usually feel like they're the weakest link of the music. I think this song would've been better without the vocals because from the part where the song slows down and then picks up again, there are no vocals but it just works with the instruments alone. But it also has an atmosphere signifying the end of something for me which is what I was looking for.
Score: 8/10

LordCost - Soundgarden: 4th of July

Of course I've heard of Soundgarden like a million times in my life but I never really took the time to go and listen to most of their music. Now I want to. This song has that feeling of everything having coming to ann end or having no hope at all and just giving up on just about everything and waiting for the end to come. What's also great is how a song like this has a good somewhat catchy chorus. I can also somewhat see the lyrics being about the end of the world although I really think they're about something else.
Score: 9/10

Tyrias - Clint Mansell: Death is the Road to Awe

So this as you described it, "somewhere between neo-classical/post-rock/soundtrack ", is defitnetly a song that fits for the end of the world. This just oozes with that feeling all the way towards the end to the short climaxes that it has. I just feel that there are certain parts of this that could've been trimmed down a bit but maybe those sections woould work better if this was being played as the soundtrack of a movie. Anyway just a minor complaint and also wish the climaxes were a bit longer.
Score: 9.5/10

Sacul - Ulver: Son of Man

You caught a lucky break that I haven't gone through all of Ulver's discovgraphy since I have it all after my last roulette. And this is just making me want to go listen to it all now. This song has a bleak and dark atmosphere but the way it sounds and is composed gives it off more of a mass feeling which makes perfect sense since this album was made for that. But I can also see it fitting and giving the sound of the theme. The sound and production of it is excellent and the vocals really do fit the sound of the song as well.
Score: 9/10

adace - Max Richter: The Nature of Daylight

Right off the bat this song reminded of Godspeed You! Black Emeperor which of course is perfect for this round but banned since they are also one of my favorite bands of all time. So its safe to say that I was really expecting to like this song if it kept going that way. I like hwo the whole song is just strings and they sound great and are played great. The first problem I came upon was the video from the link and the title of the song. Watching the video at first with the song name right next to me was giving me not a feeling of the end of the world but more like the beginning or the new start of one after so much had happened. But I decided not to watch the video and just listen to the music( I even read this poem or what somewhat wrote in the comments and it actually helped) and more towards the end of the song I start to get that feeling of culmination. The sorrowful sound and playing of the violin really helped that and I just thought this was a beautiful song at the end of it all.
Score: 10/10

Scores
Tyrias: 14+9.5=23.5
Lucien: 16+7=23
sneakyblueberry: 16
adace: 17+10+27
Sacul: 19+9=28
LordCost: 15+9=24
Scorpion: 16+8=24
Nekov: 16+6=22

So for round 4 I'm going with send me the song you think has the best groove(whatever it may be that you consider groove to be) in your opinion. Let's get groovy baby!

Will make changes to the thread.

Sacul - Nine Inch Nails: Mr. Self Destruct

So I'm somewhat familiar with certain NIN songs and mostly the Ghosts album but need to listen to all their stuff more still. Now the groove in this song is really intresting since its really mostly done by some weird metallic sound and then some synths that pop in once in a while. The most important thing is that it works. Also the vocal melodies really fit and go with the groove. The small break in the middle song gives you a breather while still having that groove being played by a bassline quietly in the background and I quite frankly think it works. Maybe I also need to listen to this song in the context of the album cause for me and I don't know why, it just sounds and feels like the ending to a longer song actually. Also wish that ending with the weird sound effect was a bit shorter.
Score: 8/10

Nekov - I Mother Earth: Juicy

Holy bass slapping. Why is bass slapping so groovy? Also the rhythm being played by the drums just adds more groove to the song and keeps it going during the chorus where there is no bass slapping obviously. And then the break this song has with just the vocals and the bass is awesome and sounds great which leads into some pretty damn nice guitar solos. All in all, awesome groovy song though I feel like I heard other songs similar sounding to this one by some other bands but this one is one of the best ones.
Score: 9/10

Tyrais - Rammstein: Mein Teil

Ah good all Rammstein. I like them but have not heard maybe even 25% of their catalog so its something I need to work on. And yes I 've seen videos of their live shows and think they are awesome and wish I could've gone to the Live at Nimes one. Also songs in other launguages don't bother so don't worry about that. AAT forst I was kinda meh about this song cause it didn't do much for me and still think the chorus is just okay at most currently. Also regarding the groove of the song, it takes a while to grow on me and only really with the synth part is that it works.
Score: 6/10

LordCost - Twelve Foot Ninja - Clarion

So when this song first started, I didn't know what to expect and then all the instruments kicked in. What a bad ass, groovy riff in my opinion. Only thing is that I don't have much to say about this one besides that right now. I just think its a really good riff with a good amount of groove in it.
Score: 8/10

sneakyblueberry - Earth, Wind, & Fire: Serpentine Fire

The grooviness is just oozing out of this song right from the start. Every thing in this song is just great and adds to the groove from the drums, bass, percussion, and trumpets. Even the vocals with the way they sing in this song. I like how they even strip down certain sections of the song with just the percussion at parts and it still just has an undeniable groove to it. The most impressive thing as well of this 10/10 score I will give it is that I rearely listen to music of thie time era or certain genres cause they're usually a miss with me but not this one.

Score: 10/10

adace - TREPALIUM: Heic Noenum Pax

So first of all, this is a pretty cool song with grreat instrument playing and a good riff. The main problem I have with it is that it pales in comparison to lots of other songs I got in this round in the groove factor. If this song was submitted in some other round or something, it would've gotten a higher score but since I was looking for groove, this song doesn't have much in my opinion. I may be wrong though but it just doesn't for me.

Score: 5/10

Scorpion - Sigh: Ecstatic Transformation

I'm a fan of Sigh but have only listened to their last album and Hangman's Hymns. Been meaning to check this album out since what seems like forever and this pushing me even more to do so. Although I felt at times that it might've been just a tab bit long and should've had more going on for it but all said and done, I enjoyed it.

Score: 7/10

Lucien - Brain Bennett: Voyage

When this started I literally thought, "Who the hell turned on my PSone. But besides that, onto the song. Took quite a bit to get started and get into the main theme or groove of the song you can say but its a 7 minute song. The funkyness of the song gave it that groove though. With it being an instrumental song and not relying on vocals to help it, at first it felt a bit simple and not much going on for it. But as the song kept on going it made subtle changes to keep the song from going stale which it felt it would at times.

Score: 8/10

Scores
Tyrias: 23.5+6=29.5

Nope. Can be a short song that sound epic to you as well. So length isn't the most important factor in this but will not hurt you in any way as long as the song is good of course.

Bump and semi update.

I receive a message from someone here that brought me back here and I will explain tomorrow why I was gone so long and that I can't believe I forgot to write a note here to apologize for my absence for so long. Hopefully anybody of the people who were participating in this are still around and want to finish this cause I will if they are up for it.

Yes I do and I will use them. I will also be sending a pm to the rest of the guys that I haven't seen respond here.

So I really don't to bore anybody here so I'll keep this short and just apologize for my long leave with no reason. The start of the year for me was hard regarding school, home issues, and other life things on top of that. I decided to put this off for a couple of weeks and was going to let you guys know but I guess it slipped my mind and I never came back to check if I did. I kept on meaning to come back sooner than later but life kept on getting more busy for me with no more school but 2 jobs at the same time and still working on these house issues in that now I have less than 90 days for me and my family to find a new home so that will be exhausting as well. But I have got a rhythm and schedule going on that I can do this and finish this so that's why I'm back.

Hope it's not too big of an issue or problem me coming back and picking this off. I just want to finish this for my sake and every body else participating in this. If some people are missing or don't respond back, I will continue to finish this with whoever has responded. Don't worry, I will keep this going at fast pace. Am going to listen to the songs and have results up on Saturday morning.

He can stick around if he wants to and participate until the end. If he wants someone else to drop in for him and take over and every body agrees with that, I have no problem with it.

Anyway, results time.

Tyrias - Epica: Kingdom of Heaven: Part 1

The band even has epic in their name. Epic sounding vocals, has solid guitar riffs with some fun instrumental sections. It felt a bit too long at certain sections but I can see why they were added into the song to go with the concept behind it. The chorus as well was good but not really attention grabbing anymore as the song went on for me. Basically it was too far and between in moments that really got me pumped saying and feeling that this really stood out as being an epic section of music but I liked the song and thought it was solid.
Score: 8/10

Sacul - Alter Bridge: Blackbird

The difference for me between this song and the one I just posted above this one in regards to epic sounding for me just makes me wonder why we feel some sound more epic than others. I say that because this one has more of an epic feel and sound to it compared to the Epica song even though the Epica has a lot more going on for it and even has symphonies in it that almost always makes everything sound more epic. Reasons why for me in this song are mostly thanks to the guitars in it. The riffs and chords just give off that feeling. Then comes the soloing towards to the end that have for me that, "playing a guitar solo at a mountain top" type of feeling and thought it was awesome. The vocals were good as well and the drums sound like they would be fun to play in this.
Score: 9/10

LordCost - Oceansize: Trail of Fire

With this song I thought it was a solid and interesting song to listen to but not much stood out for me. I can see why you sent me this song and agree that its a build up song to the end and thought the second half was the highlight of the song while the first half was just okay for the most part. I feel like I need to listen to it a couple of more times so it will click for me because while I think the end as well did sound somewhat epic, I think other songs in this round did it better.
Score: 7/10

adace - Saor: Pillars of the Earth

So I know about this band but have only listened to the first off of the album this song is from and that's it. I like the beginning because I feel like its setting up something or  preparing for something and then the guitars kick in. I usually would have problems with the production of albums like this one but can see why bands do this and that it fits the music and in my opinion it does for this song because it gives a big sound to the song from everything to the guitars, drums, and even the vocals. That for me usually helps a song sound epic if that's what its aiming for which I feel this song is doing.
Score: 9/10

sneakyblueberry - maudlin of the Well: Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, Or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost
I like how the song starts off, especially the string section which makes me feel like I should prepare for something awesome. At first listens, the slow section with the vocals kinda didn't gel with me but the more times I listened to the song, the more I felt like it fit with the song and liked it. I can see why this song was chosen for this round but it just didn't give off that epic feeling like other songs in this round for me. It was more of a relaxing and chill type of a song you listen to at night with some really beautiful moments in it.
Score: 8/10

Lucien - Peter Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Finale

A classical piece sent in this was a smart idea. I feel like I've said this before here but can't exactly remember and am too lazy to go back and check but I've been wanting to check out more classical music. With this song, at first took a while to grow on me but the more listened to it, I would feel like the pay off was worth listening to it all the way to the end. Just listening to it and hearing how the instruments work their way to pulling off a grand finale and giving it that epic feeling and sound to it is awesome but I wish the whole song had that feel and not just the end. Also maybe, and this isn't really a knock or anything negative about this pick, but I always feel like its shorter than what it is so maybe I should listen to it with all the other parts included.
Score: 8/10

Scorpion - Seventh Wonder: The Great Escape

So when I first started playing this song, I didn't look at any of its info so was thinking if it was just going to be a vocals and guitar song then it better be fucking awesome. But meanwhile listening to it I check and saw it was 30 minutes long and then I understood and prepared myself. So let me just say that I thought the song was really good with lots of badass moments mostly thanks to some of the awesome guitar riffs in it. The problem though is that that's what they were for me, badass but not epic. The other issue I had with it was that I understand like the Epica song that this is a concept song and those usually tend to be long and in the Prog realm and lots of them are awesome just like this one but they tend to suffer from being too long. I felt like certain parts of the song could have been cut or condensed and it would still be badass but overstay its welcome or lost my attention in certain parts.
Score: 7/10

Nekov - Frost*: Milliontown

So another long song at 26 minutes and another good song which all the ones in this round were. But to keep this short since I can do in this what I just said about the long song is condense this. I liked this song but didn't enjoy as much as say the Seventh Wonder song which I thought a couple more awesome moments than this one. The one thing this one does better than that one is play a bit better the epic sounding part because I feel like some of the sections were a bit more epic sounding instead of just playing cool sounding things on their respective instruments. Bit this one for me also overstays its welcome or at least I feel that way sometimes. I feel as if though I will have to give this one and the Seventh Wonder song a couple of more listens to see if its the songs that I feel could be shorter or I'm just not feeling the long length type of songs which I'm usually a big fan of.
Score: 7/10

Scores
Tyrias: 29.5+8=37.5
Lucien: 31+8=39
sneakyblueberry: 34+8=42
adace: 32+9=41
Sacul: 36+9=45
LordCost: 32+7=39
Scorpion: 31+7=38
Nekov: 31+7=38

Next round, 6, I will just make it an open one since I feel like I'm not enjoying too much grading these songs on a restriction like a theme instead of just basing on how much I like the song and feel like its a bit unfair at times. Maybe its just because I feel this way right with certain songs in this round that I'm sure would be rated higher and maybe some would be lower compared to the some I got this round. So it might stay open until the end unless I change my opinion over night which could happen. Or maybe I'm just lacking in sleep and should go to bed now. Anyway, looking forward to your next selections.

Results!

sneakyblueberry - The New Caledonia: Electro Legs

One hell of a groovy song. Every new section that the song goes into just has something I like and every instrument does its job in it as well with it highlight moment. Even with all the changes that the song goes through, it just all fits together even though there are certain parts I like more than others. There are parts which I do wish they extended a bit longer although am glad that sometimes they will play them more than once in the song. Also I know lots of music of this kind is like that, I feel at times they jammed all these cool ideas they had into one song that do fit together but wish at times towards the end they would've kept it more focused on some of the ideas already introduced but I feel like that goes with how familiar you are with the song which means I have to listen to it more. As well as moments of feeling like it sounds familiar to other songs I've heard but still maintaining its own identity and sound which is a really good thing. Anyway, groovy song.
Score: 8/10

LordCost - Native Construct: Mute

So I knew of this band way before their first album came out thanks to one of their videos I saw years ago of the two guitarists playing one of their songs. Never took the time to listen to their album but had heard maybe just 2 song from it. I can see why you said it has a BTBAM influence in the PM you sent because it is there and you can hear it. They do a good job as well with that sound and come up with some cool ideas in their song. I will fall in the category as well of this song is going to have grow a bit more on me because while it has lots of parts that I like and I think are cool, it also has other moments where I kinda feel like are ust okay or don't really hook me. Although it does build up to a pretty good ending but its similar to lots of other songs I have listened to and doesn't stick that much out compared to them.
Score: 7/10

Nekov - Dream the Electric Sleep: How Long We Wait

So I like the sound and rhythm of this song right off the bat as well as how catchy this song was with me thanks to the vocal melody in the chorus with memorable guitar sound in the background helping with the melody of that section. I wish most of the song was like the first part of it because of how much I like it or enjoy listening to it because although the rest is pretty good and can see them still having a slow section for the song, I think it would've been better if it was shorter and the song ended how it started. I also like the singer's vocals as well and has some really good vocal sections in like I mentioned before.
Score: 8/10

Lucien - Stephen Wilson: Symphony #1, Movement 1
Some original work from you again I believe. So I will keep this short because I feel like I could talk about this piece of a work a bit and ask questions about it but that can be some time later. First of all, I like it. Has many good ideas and great captivating moments. Each section it moves on time has either really good string or a flute section or both at the same time which is pretty much the whole time so honestly I should just say the whole song. Problem that I had was that I feel like some of its parts lose its luster because of how long the piece is and how it changes when most of the beginning it has its cycle and repeating pattern I guess you can say. I also feel like its length would work more of course with it being played as a companion to a video telling a story that fits the mood of the song or something because that's exactly the feeling I get from this. As if it were telling a story.
Score: 8/10

Sacul - Bent Knee: Being Human

I think this will make you even more happier that I came back and am finishing this. This song caught me off guard. I didn't expect it to grab me so quickly and right away and have me wanting to keep on listening to it more and more to the point that I decided to start listening to the whole album. At first I was wondering why I liked it so much but just keep on listening to it and enjoying it. Then I realized I just liked everything about it. The vocals which are amazing, the riffs, the guitar, the bass, the drums, the violin, the everything. This actually feels to me like an epic song in a short and to the point length. It was just stuck in my head most of the time that I wasn't listening to any music and I feel like it'll be a while before I get tired of it.
Score: 10/10

Scorpion - Infected Mushroom: Becoming Insane

Interesting choice song as to seeing as not much electronic music is usually picked in open rounds in my experience but I am always up for it. Not familiar with Infected Mushroom so my first experience with their music. So first of all, I just want to say that this song just reminds of some Japanese street racing games I used to play with my cousin years ago which had soundtracks full of music like this which were good. So that's what this song makes me feel like doing, playing a racing game or going out, driving a car at night listening to this. I liked it and feel like I can crank this out every once in a while to pump myself off. Not too memorable or anything to me though like some other trance songs I know or compared to songs in this round.
Score: 7/10

Tyrias - Susanne Sundfor: The Brothel

I dug this ballad more than I thought I would. I can be really picky or dismissive with songs like these lots of times but when I like a song like this, I really do like them. With it being petty much just vocals and organs, it really does a good job of building a nice tragic, as well as beautiful sounding atmosphere to the song. Really the highlight of this song are the vocals and just how nice they are and comforting to listen to. That's what I like a ballad to be to me. Comforting.

So to round 7 which will be open again. Do you guys care about the write ups or would just prefer me write like a one sentence write up and the score, just the score, or keep on writing them. I ask because I feel like I suck at them and do at bad job at explaining what I like about the songs sometimes and don't know if you guys care about them or not.

Tbf some great songs were sent on this round, like The Brothel, and Becoming Insane. But yeah, this ain't very funny. For you ;D

Damn, wasn't really sure you'd even like it, but glad you ended up checking the whole album - one of my favorite releases from last year, by such a talented yet obscure group.

Will send soon.

Fuuuuuck, Lucas.

Obfuscation, if you liked Electro Legs, I'd recommend you check out The New Caledonia's album 'Lotus', which is very much an unknown gem.  The guys in the band eventually made up the first incarnation of Kimbra's backing band, so they've been quite on the NewCal front since then.  Church.

Also keep doing write ups, its helpful to see what you like and dislike and how that correlates to the scores.

I will check it out since I did like it and I like Kimbra too so it's cool to hear they're both connected somehow.

I should anyway so I can get better them and at describing things.

I would say no limit but would prefer not to get anything over 30 minutes long. I don't have as much time as I used to to be able to not care about song length but I want to give all the song a fair amount of listening time with the limited amount of time I have.

Results!

Nekov - Spock's Beard: Something Very Strange

No Spock's Beard in my banned list cause I know them but only like 3 songs. So this song to me sounds like a typical prog song in that you know it sounds good, impressive musicianship, and how the song progresses from part to part. I actually like this song because I enjoy the instrumental sections of the song which I don't find boring which has been a case that has happened before for me with other songs or bands of this genre. As well as I think some the guitar solos and riffs in this song are really cool and fun to listen to. Also the chorus of this song got stuck in my head for bit which is a good thing as well. All in all a good song but just an average song overall because nothing really sticks out from plethora of prog songs I have heard or that makes me say wow, this is awesome.
Score: 7/10

LordCost - Pain of Salvation: Undertow

So you saw I had been sent PoS before in another roulette and I have to say I thought the song that I was sent was okay but afterwards forgot about it and just didn't spark an interest in me to go check the band's other work. This song on the other hand, will probably cause me to go check out their albums. Reasons why with this song are because I just like the build up the song has which isn't too long or trying to go overboard with it. The vocals and guitar work at the beginning really help set up the atmosphere and sound of this song which really helps paint the picture that the lyrics are trying to show. They pull it off so well that towards the end, it makes you want to start singing the lyrics as intense as their singing it. Can't write much about the instruments because they just do a solid and simple job in working together to make this song work.
Score: 9/10

Scorpion - Strapping Young Lad

I was about to tell you I couldn't receive this song when I saw it was from SYL since I was familiar with them but saw I had never heard this song and that I only new the songs Love?, Detox, Shitstorm, and that was it. I'm happy I got this song from you. How can a Canadian make so much good pissed off and mad at everything music is still hard to figure out. But yeah, this song just really gets me pumped but this song stands among many of those type of songs because of how much more awesome the guitars are in this song all the way and Devin's vocals are just top-notch in this one. It goes from one awesome and heart pumping riffs and beat to other just as cool sections with other awesome riffs or guitar noodling. I can't just listen to this song once without listen to it again after its done.
Score: 9/10

Sacul - Saltillo: Giving In

So Trip-Hop I'm familiar with but not much of a listener of it. Usually have to be in a certain mood to listen to music like this but that's not to say that I don't like it. For example, I like this song and everything, but don't find or see myself listening to it that often or better said, every once in a while I might remember it and listen to it. I gotta say though, its a solid song and the highlight of course are the vocals with the string arrangements accompanying the beat really giving a good layer of fullness to its sound.

Score: 6/10

sneakyblueberry - Unknown Mortal Orchestra: Multi-Love

I dig this song. Like how it starts off and the bass line the song has with the nice beat being playing by the drums. The vocals aren't that amazing or anything but with the effects used on them, they fit the song perfectly. Can't help but bump my head to this song cause I just like the groove it has and have to say the chorus is the not the greatest but pretty solid and can be memorable at bits but does sound a bit similar at times in how its sung to other ones I've heard or know.
Score: 8/10

Tyrias - Chelsea Wolfe: Carrion Flowers

Even without trying to or remembering, I did listen to this song in the darkness and it does go hand in hand with it. So I feel like this will be the hardest song to explain why I really like it in this round. So first off all that bass/synth line it starts off with and is the foundation of this song just sounds good throughout when layered with all the other sounds she uses to build up the song and help give it a dark feeling and maybe even a bit of sinister vibe to the song. What she does with the vocals in the song as well isn't anything new or original but I can't think of any other way the vocals would fit or work in a song like this. Like I said, I can't really come up with good ways of explaining why I like this song but I just do.
Score: 9/10

Lucien - Blue Man Group: Klein Mandelbrot

When I started listening to this at the beginning, it sounded like typical or other Blue Man Group stuff I had heard before or seen them play in some videos. But as the song kept on going I started thinking, is this really the Blue Man Group or some other band that was mislabeled. Gotta say I was surprised at first that you would send me something from the Blue Man Group and then as equally surprised at this song. It just grows as the song goes on and has many interesting things occur in it and pop up. The beat and rhythm used is a good one that helps just support any other instrument that pops up to make an appearance, most notably the guitar. But occasionally its other ones like the congas or whatever other contraptions they have made themselves to bang on and make noise. I was also surprised by how much I liked it and was captivated by it to keep on listening and paying attention to whatever would come next in the song.
Score: 8/10

Scores

5)LordCost: 46+9=55
6)Scorpion: 45+9=54
7)Nekov: 46+7=53

So on to the last and final round which of course will be an open one as well. With Sacul in the lead, it'll be interesting to see if he'll play it risky or safe and see if sneakyblueberry and can live up to his name and sneak up past by him and win this. Before its over, I just want to thank you guys for being a part of this and being patience with me and actually coming back to finish this when I showed my face around here again. Also thanks to all the awesome music you guys have sent me. Will be fun to keep on listening to them once this is over.

True but I know for sure what will always be a hit with me and what won't. I know songs with cool guitar riffs or other things that just don't do it for me or I don't care to listen to.

Uhhhhhhhhh if you're asking about anything similar to BTBAM to me, just look at my username since its a BTBAM song title. I think that means I like them right?  :P ;)

Holy shit. Should I even post the results? I swear people are going to think I did this on purpose. I feel like I should listen to the songs more and see if that changes anything. Pr maybe it was meant to be. You know what, screw it. Let's see what you guys think and say and want to do about it.

Results!

sneakyblueberry - maudlin of the Well: Heaven and Weak

I feel like I will listen to this band's entire work if I were to keep on doing song roulette's which is a good thing though. So what I feel like this band does good from the songs I've heard and this one included is getting you into the song slowly and in a hypnotizing way and building it up to something big. This song pulls it off pretty much perfectly. The slow beginning just sound pleasant and nice to the ears and once you're really capture by the section, the guitars start kicking in leading up to a rocking, bang your head section which is fun. Really the only weak link in this song I can find is probably the vocals at times in the second half of the song just don't pump me up as much as the instrument playing but that's not to say it doesn't fit in.

Score: 9/10

Nekov - Riverside: The Curtain Falls

Honestly at moments I found many similarities of this song to the maudlin song as to how it starts off and it actually tries to build up to something. Its a nice relaxing song to listen to and the build is solidly played and built up to. I just feel like its okay and not anything that sets it aside from many other songs or gives it its own unique identity since there have been many other songs I've heard that are somewhat similar in my own experience. Also the climax for me in this song never really wows me or just leaves me wanting more.

Score: 7/10

Scorpion - The Fall of Grace: My Regret

So another song from another member of this forum but this time it being Adami. Not sure how many you participating in this have heard this or are familiar with it cause if you're not, I suggest you check it out cause its quite good. The tone and atmosphere set up by the song right at the beginning really fits the entire song. Everything from the vocals, guitars, drums, and bass really hit it on the nail and are all solid. And again another song that build up to an ending or climax. I just like that riffs they play at the end for some reason.

Score: 8/10

LordCost - Thumpermonkey: Sleeve

I have to say, this is really an interesting song to me in that at first I thought I wouldn't like it but I actually do and think this band has a unique sound thanks in part to the many different layers of sound used in this song and especially the vocals. First of all, this song just doesn't sound boring to me at all and in fact that's how I felt about it at first for no reason at all. I just like the sound of it thanks to the awesome riff tone of the guitars with the bass and the great rhythm they pull off. Honestly though, the star of this song for me are the vocals. Its not that they are the greatest vocals I've ever heard, not at all. Its just how they fit this song and give it a unique sound and how memorable they are with the vocal melodies that are sung.

Score: 9/10

Lucien - Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony 9

You didn't want to make this easy on me did ya? Let me try to keep this really short before I go on rambling about it. So first off, this starts off firing on all cylinders and I really like that because it really feeds off of how happy it sounds. Then its like listening to an entire story with its more quiet and slower moments in which your imagination can use to create whatever story it wants or it believes the symphony is playing. Really, its like lots of those slow moments are telling a mysterious story or that something is about to happen. Then it picks up again and it just sounds and feels fun to listen to all those instruments do what they do. Honestly what this mostly reminded me of were those Looney Tunes cartoons, especially the Merry Melodies cartoon ones they did which was the whole cartoon went with every single thing the music did. That's exactly how they would sound and I always got a kick out of them. Seriously, I skipped over many things on purpose and will stop before I go on. Also Lucien, if you have any more awesome classical music or anything related to it whether it be cool stories or people involved in that genre and would like to share, please do and send me anything you think is worth sharing. I would appreciate it.

Score: 9/10

Sacul - Faith No More: Smaller and Smaller

AHhhh the ever so famous Faith No More who I never dedicate time to listen to. I feel like you should've gone with a more riskier pick than this or something because honestly this song is just an okay song to me. Overall that's what it just build up to and I like it but I just didn't get into it like most songs in this round. I will say that the guitar riff with it up being okay only really shines in the chorus and is when Mike Patton also steps up to the plate with his vocals. I wish this song would have built up to something more. It just feels very restrained and like a small piece to something bigger. It seems like I only have bad things to say about the song but I actually like it a bit. Not to the extent of most of the songs I got so far but I also feel like this one will be a grower.

Score: 6/10

Tyrias - Vennart: Opiate

This is another simple song but the difference with this one is that it sounds bigger or more full as the song goes on and has a pretty good and memorable chorus. But that's really the only part that sticks out to me. The chorus. The vocals are good as is everything else but if it wasn't for the chorus, it would be a forgettable song. I think this song also falls in the category of a grower cause I feel like later on out of nowhere, I will be humming the chorus or something and then want to listen to the song again.

Score: 6/10

Scores
1)Sacul: 61+6=67
1)sneakyblueberry: 58+9=67
3)Lucien: 55+9=64
4)Tyrias: 55.5+6=61.5
5)LordCost: 55+9=64
6)Scorpion: 54+8=62
7)Nekov: 53+7=60

So yeah you read that right. Sacul and sneakyblueberry ended up tied for first after all this. I seriously did not expect that to happen. I went in to the scores thinking either one would win or lose and then when I went to add them up, boom tied. This sorta happened in my first roulette when I miscounted the score and recounted them again and had 2 people tie for first in the final round. So what I did and think would be the logical thing to do is just do a sudden death round between you two. Unless you want to both take the fame and glory of winning this but am not sure if that breaks any rules or something.

To everybody else, thanks again for participating and sticking around for about a year or so I guess it is and hope you don't hate after making you guys wait so long but at least I can say I finished and am happy I did.

Watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVfz5YymsXI), Obfuscation. I think you'll like it. Don't change my score if it changes anything, but watching it made me appreciate the symphony more

I need to get the Vennart album at some point, I don't think it'll be as good as Oceansize, but, hey

and yeah that Riverside choice is a bit confusing, not even one of my favorites from the album, nor is that one of my favorite albums from them  :lol

Honestly I saw that video in the related section and was thinking of watching it and I will do that.

I thought it was an interesting choice too.

Nope, nothing of the sort. It's your roulette, so it's your rules. The choice is yours.

Well then I will actually leave it up to them to decide because I am fine with either way.

They are both winners in my eyes. :'( :tup

I think two winners is kind of lame. Sudden death for the win. ;D

Agreed, althought a fight to death sounds more interesting than sudden death  ;)

Goddamnit :lol

Went after the epicness factor and thought it'd pay off better, heh. Tbh I was almost about to send you Just Like You Imagined by NiN, but didn't want to repeat artists lol - and sent that tune among the extra tracks I sent ya so wth. I'd be up for a last round any time (damn you sneaky!), but I also feel this roulette has been going on for quite some time. Sharing the crown with sneaky feels OK to me - just in this context, I'd fight ya to death in another roulette ;)

Thanks for returning and finishing this! It was surely fun to play. ;D

I'm glad you liked Thumpermonkey! They are really unknown, it was a very risky choice. If you want to check out other songs I'd say everything on Sleep Furiously apart the opener, and from the other albums I like Abyssopelagic, 419, My Reality Is Stronger, The Drill, Tzizimime, Melissa Leaves...  the other project of the singer called Eat Your Robot is great too.

I would like to see the sudden death too, if I have to say what I prefer.
