Welcome to yet another exciting roulette!
I'm hosting this mainly as a chance for me to get into a lot of new music as my library is still quite limited. The banned list is therefore relatively short. The bands on the list are all bands I enjoy, I've left some out where I have only heard one album or even just a few songs. If you send me something that I've already heard I'll let you know and you can send another one.
Banned list:
Avenged Sevenfold
Alter Bridge
Alcest
Ayreon
Between the Buried and Me
Beyond the Bridge
Circus Maximus
Devin Townsend (and related projects)
Dream Theater
The Flower Kings
Frost*
Genesis
Haken
Iron Maiden
Marillion
Metallica
Moon Safari
Opeth
Pain of Salvation
Pink Floyd
Riverside
Rush
Sound of Contact
Steven Wilson (and related projects)
Symphony X
Tool
Transatlantic
The concept: My plan is to make this a league roulette. By that I mean that each round every player will face off against another player. I will compare the submissions of the two players and the best one will recieve 3 points. I will also reward the best song of the round with 2 extra points for a total of 5 points. After 5 rounds everyone will have played against everyone and the 6th round will be the finals! There will be no themes in this roulette, every round will be open. There will also be no eliminations, everyone will get to play in every round, even the finals.
Players:
senecadawg2
Scorpion
Evermind
Buddyhunter1
MoraWintersoul
Tom Bombadil
-
I'd like to get in! I don't share much of my library with the rest of the participants (though I find a lot of compatibility with seneca, and Scorp, who won my roulette), so I think I could add some nice varied stuff to it.
-
You're in!
-
I'd be down for this, although being my first roulette I fully expect to lose big time.
-
You're in too then! I'll just wait for confirmation on the other players (it's been a while since they said they wanted in).
-
I'd be down for this, although being my first roulette I fully expect to lose big time.
That's my third roulette, so you're not alone in this. :lol
I'm in, of course. So, only six players then?
-
Adding a minimum of two more would increase the number of rounds by two and the number of total songs listened by 28 :)
-
I know, and that was what I was planning at first, however in a few weeks I'll be starting university and I don't know how much free time I'll have. It looks like the first few weeks will be pretty hectic and I would rather not have too much on my shoulders when that time comes. Maybe I'm worrying too much but that was why I decreased it to 6.
-
Yeah, I'm supportive of that, was just trying to illustrate how in the end it would be a lot for a league format.
-
Sign me up.
EDIT: Wait, are you already done accepting participants? If so you didn't edit the first post. :lol
-
If there's still room I'd like to join
-
Sign me up.
EDIT: Wait, are you already done accepting participants? If so you didn't edit the first post. :lol
Oops. Well both you and nekov can join if the others don't respond. I wouldn't count on it though.
-
It's up to you of course, but I'd love the chance to knock those two down a couple notches :D
And yes, I'm definitely still in.
-
I'll give it a shot.
-
Like I said in the PM, I'm on this bitch.
-
Ok, just waiting for confirmation from gorille then.
Sorry to everyone who didn't make it, maybe next time I'll host a bigger one. A tip if you want in on these is to keep an eye on the tracker thread as I was searching for players there before it started here. :)
-
Seeing as Gorille hasn't replied yet and his last activity was two weeks ago I have decided to pass the spot over to Buddyhunter1.
We will now begin the first round, songs must be shorter than 15 minutes. My preferences for sending methods are as follows:
1. Spotify link
2. mp3 file
3. Youtube link
4. Other
Matchups for the first round are:
senecadawg2 vs. MoraWintersoul
Scorpion vs. Tom Bombadil
Evermind vs. Buddyhunter1
-
Sorry Milena, this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you
-
Sweet!
I'll send later today.
-
I'll send something tomorrow in ~26 hours, hope I'm not delaying this. Not gonna be at home until that time.
I don't have Spotify by the way, so if you can provide a decent file hosting service, that would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I'm going with youtube.
-
Sent! Hopefully you haven't heard it before.
-
Sent.
-
In fact, I've sent. Gonna be received either nicely or not.
-
Do we send it to you by PM? Spotify isn't supported in my country, so I'd have to send Youtube links, unless you provided your email for the mp3s :)
Sorry Milena, this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you
Oh baby.
-
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=E558C4514150B36E!561&authkey=!APqEP07BlfWpppc&ithint=folder%2c
This should work for uploading mp3's. I don't know if you need a hotmail account for it to work. if it doesn't work just send me the youtube link. I'll eventually just convert it to an mp3 anyway in order to listen on my phone.
Send a PM when/if you upload something so I know when to look. :)
-
Oh, that's cool, thanks!
-
Sent! Also, for further rounds, what is your opinion on harsh vocals (growls/screams/whatever)?
-
They're cool. I generally prefer clean vocals but I enjoy Opeth, Devin Townsend and BTBAM. You may get more clues in my upcoming writeups!
-
I have now recieved all the songs. Results should be out in a few days. :)
-
Results are now here! Some really good songs already. I can tell I'll have a lot to dig deeper into once this is all over. Doing this made me realize I suck at write-ups, oh well.
Senecadawg2 vs. MoraWintersoul
Senecadawg2: Anathema Dreaming Light
I've been meaning to check Anathema out for a while and this song just made that a top priority. This song is simply beautiful, listeining to it makes me feel very happy. Not much else to say really, great song! :tup
MoraWintersoul: Dan Swanφ Uncreation
This is a very interesting song. if I had just heard an instrumental version of it, I would never have guessed it featured harsh vocals! It still fits though, and creates quite a unique sound, I'm not sure what I would compare it to. I like it quite a bit, and it will surely see some rotation in the future.
Winner: Senecadawg2
Scorpion vs. Tom Bombadil
Scorpion: Pyramid Theorem Another Day Slips By
This is pretty much a standard prog ballad, that doesn't make it any less good though! I was enjoying this song quite a bit the first time I heard it, but the part that really sold it was dat guitar solo :hefdaddy. These guys were already on my list of bands to check out and I definitely will do just that! :)
Tom Bombadil: Mastodon March of the Fire Ants
Listening to this song feels like getting punched in the face, but in a good way! :metal I really enjoyed the crushing heaviness of it, but aside from that there unfortunately wasn't much that gripped me in this song.
Winner: Scorpion
Evermind vs. Buddyhunter1
Evermind: Avantasia The Scarecrow
Now this is power metal done right! Sure it's pretty cheesy in some ways, but it's some mighty fine cheese. The main riff kinda reminds me of Ayreon (that's a good thing) and the vocals are outstanding. This song just keeps being awesome all the way through. It loses some momentum after the first 4 minutes or so, but immidiately starts building up again to the epic climax. Fantastic song, and one that should have been an easy win, however...
BuddyHunter1: Ihsahn Undercurrent
This song is awesome. The atmosphere of it is the polar opposite of the Avantasia song, while that song felt triumphant and grand this one invokes a feeling of... well, whatever the opposite of triumphant is :P. The first few minutes feature some beautiful clean vocals but I must admit that I was sceptical when I first heard the growls. They are a bit different and I didn't really dig them when I first heard it, they have grown on me since then though. My favorite part of the song is when the main riff returns with the support of some saxophone of all instruments, I've never heard a sax used quite this way and the result is eargasmic. The song just keeps going from there and doesn't disappoint at any part. I love this song. :hefdaddy
Winner: BuddyHunter1. This was by far the most difficult match to decide, both songs are awesome and I feel really bad not giving Evermind any points after a submission like that. Hope you understand!
Buddyhunter also recieves the extra 2 points for the best song of the round, leaving the results as follows:
1. Buddyhunter1: 5
2. senecadawg2: 3
2. Scorpion: 3
4. MoraWintersoul: 0
4. Tom Bombadil: 0
4. Evermind: 0
Match-ups for next round:
senecadawg2 vs. Scorpion
Evermind vs. MoraWintersoul
Tom Bombadil vs. Buddyhunter1
Constructive criticism concerning the write-ups and layout is welcome and appriciated. :)
-
Hope you understand!
No, please just jump out of the window now.
:lol
Of course I do, that's not about points (that's what I tell myself when I'm losing :lol), if you liked the song, that's great.
-
YUSSSSSS.
I highly recommend checking out the rest of the album. There's hardly a weak song on it.
Will send later today. :)
-
Wow seneca, ya didn't have to go all Anathema on my ass :lol
-
Is there any limit on song length?
-
15 minutes max.
-
15 minutes max.
Thanks. Sent round 2.
-
And I have sent as well.
-
Wow seneca, ya didn't have to go all Anathema on my ass :lol
hehehe. To be fair, you sent one helluva great song as well :tup

Alright, all songs recieved. Results probably tomorrow! :D

:zydarscouch:
Scorpion, you're next!
Make him bleed.

Before we get to the write-ups I just want to say that it's really hard for me to give these great songs 0 points, I hope you don't put too much weight into the score, I really have enjoyed all the songs sent to me thus far. I'm also starting to realize why people have themes, it's really hard to compare two songs that are so different! But enough whining from me, let's get to the results!
senecadawg2 vs. Scorpion
senecadawg2: Agalloch - In the Shadow of our Pale Companion
Where to start with this song? It was definitely a grower for me. At first I wasn't really sure what to make of it, but now I think it's all kinds of awesome. The main selling point of this song for me is probably the atmosphere of it, it just absorbs me and never lets go. The growls are really cool in that some of them are pretty much whispered, never really heard that before. I also really love how the instrumental sections are handled. Not technical at all, just atmospherical and full of feeling. The lyrics are really cool but if there's some deeper meaning here I'll need some enlightening! All in all, fantastic song.
Scorpion: Flaming Row - Rage of Despair
So energy, powah! Seriously, if theres one thing this song is it's energetic. I always feel pumped up after listening to this, it's probably amazing for a workout. Overall I really like the song and I really can't wait to hear the rest of the album (I assume it's a concept album?). By far my favorite part of the song is the chorus, that thing is going to be stuck in my head for a while, not that I'm complaining though!
Winner: senecadawg2
Evermind vs. MoraWintersoul
Evermind: IQ - The Road of Bones
This song has some great moments, but in my opinion it takes too long to get it started. It feels to me like you have this long buildup and then once you hit the climax the song is just over way too soon. Basically I would have wanted less of the first 6 minutes and more of the last 2 (those two minutes are awesome though). That's not to say that the first 6 minutes are bad, they're definitely not, but standards are very high in this roulette so far. Wow, this write-up sounded so negative, I still really enjoyed the song just so you know!
MoraWintersoul: Nightingale - Revival
Here is another chorus that's gonna stick in my mind for a while. This song rocks, plain and simple. I can definitely picture myself singing along to this at max volume in the car. I like the vocals too, always refreshing to hear prog metal vocalists who aren't all about hitting the high notes, these are just pleasant to listen to (and easier to sing along to :P). Great song, not too complicated, just plain good!
Winner: MoraWintersoul
Tom Bombadil vs. Buddyhunter1
Tom Bombadil: Redemption - Love Kills Us All / Life in One Day
This song is great, it has all I want from a prog mini-epic. The opening verses sets the mood perfectly, the instrumental section kicks ass and the final half is just awesome. I especially like the verses in the final half (Seems so strange to think of...), something about them tickles me just right! I don't have too much else to add to this, awesome song!
Buddyhunter1: Oceansize - Trail of Fire
I really didn't care for this song when I first started listening to it but it has grown a lot since then. My favorite part of it is probably the opening 3 minutes, I just love the rhythm and everything else about it. Damn, listening to it now it seems even better than before, given a few more listens it might have overtaken the opponent but right now I feel like it's lacking just a tiny bit to reach that level.
Winner: Tom Bombadil
Best song of the round: senecadawg2
Updated standings:
1. senecadawg2 - 8
2. Buddyhunter1 - 5
3. Scorpion - 3
3. MoraWintersoul - 3

Well, you can't always win with IQ, you know!
Time to send something not really predictable, I guess...
Please don't feel like you've sent me bad songs. Especially that Avantasia song is totally awesome and I enjoy the IQ song as well, it just didn't really connect with me if you know what I'm saying. I'm totally up for unpredictable, those are often the best ones!¨
Edit: maybe I'm being too defensive, I just wish all the songs could win. :lol
-
You're goin' down, dawg.
Hope you don't mind if I play a bit dirty this round. :hat

ah damn..

Glad you liked the Redmption song.
Will send either tonight or tomorrow

That's what (https://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg483/ndisla9/avatar_7076_1364592449_zpsb9f82aba.jpeg) said. Not sure why you mean by 'dirty', but I'm sure it won't be any dirtier than Anathema and Agalloch :D
-
I guess I'll just say that Buddyhunter tried to send me Untitled VIII by Sigur Ros. Had I not already heard ( ) that might have been a winning play. I'm now waiting for him to send a replacement.
-
DAMN IT.
I'll have to think of something else then. :lol
-
Dirty little fucker :azn:
And here I was thinking of also sending Sigur Ros

No worries. I should have sent Agalloch as well. Oh well. Most people already know them, so they rarely enter my thoughts during roulettes, to be honest.

Re-submitted.
Sent something senecadawg will probably find as equally dickish. :)

I've only recieved two songs so far, the sooner I get more the sooner I can post results!

Sorry it took so long, I was at the beach. Sent now.

Have you got mine? Because I've sent you one when you posted the results.

Have you got mine? Because I've sent you one when you posted the results.
Yep, I actually had 3, now I have 5.
-
Who's missing? Let's all gang up on him/her.
-
Milena has actually been the last the last to submit every round so gang up all you want on her. :lol
-
I'm giving Mora 24 hours to submit her song, if she doesn't I'll post the results anyway with an automatic loss for her.
-
Well I hope she sends the song!
(because she isn't going against me in this round's matchup)
-
Bump.
I want to see to which song I've lost. :lol
-
Results should be coming in an hour or so. :-X
-
Sorry Milena, I'm gonna have to post this without your song for this round. If you don't send anything in the upcoming rounds your opponents song will be graded on a scale from 0 to 3, for this round though it's an automatic win for scorp (spoiler alert: it wouldn't have made a difference!)
senecadawg2 vs. Buddyhunter1
senecadawg2: Gallowbraid - Stone of Remembrance
This is one of the few songs that I would describe as epic. The whole song just has an epic feel to it, from the anthemic chorus to the folky feel, it feels like it would fit into a fantasy movie (but not really). Let me just list some things that I love about this song: the chorus, the lyrics, the folk break leading into the last chorus, and also the rest of the song! Despite the subject matter I feel like this song is strangely uplifting, after listening to it I feel like I'm ready for battle (but not really :P).
Buddyhunter1: Ulver - Porn Piece or The Scars of Cold Kisses
Interesting title aside, this song didn't really do it for me. I'm not that into post-rock and the only thing I've heard that's close to the genre is ( ) by Sigur Ros. While I really like that album one of the main selling points for me is the big climaxes after the long build-ups, this song doesn't really have that nor does it have the same great atmosphere that ( ) has. It was a pleasant listen though and some of the audio effects are quite cool.
Winner: senecadawg2
Evermind vs. Tom Bombadil
Evermind: Mark Knopfler - Dream of the Drowned Submariner
This is a really beautiful and laid back song featuring some really nice guitar playing at the end. I enjoyed listening to the song and I might come back to it in the future. However it didn't really have that little extra something to push it to the next level if you know what I mean.
Tom Bombadil: Wings Denied - Generation Y
This song gets a lot done in less than 5 minutes, it's a great example that good prog songs don't need to be 10 minutes long. I really liked this song, it manages to reach a perfect mix of being both complex and very catchy. I will definitely check out these guys some more in the future!
Winner: Tom Bombadil sorry
Scorpion vs. Morawintersoul
Scorpion: Leprous - Forced Entry
This song kicks all kinds of ass, I actually think you played it for me once in the DTF tinychat. I get kind of a Haken vibe from some of the instrumental stuff going on (that's a good thing). The vocals are excellent and the song just flows naturally from one awesome thing to the next. One thing I love about it is that even though it's 10 minutes long it never feels like any part is longer than it needs to be. Listening to this song is a rollercoaster ride, and one I will gladly ride many times over!
Winner: Scorpion (duh)
Best song of the round: Scorpion
Standings:
1. senecadawg2 - 11
2. Scorpion - 8
3. Tom Bombadil - 6

6: Evermind - 0
Match-ups for the next round:
Senecadawg vs. Tom Bombadil
Scorpion vs. Evermind
Buddyhunter vs. MoraWintersoul
Because of what went down this round I'm going to set a deadline this time. Please have your songs sent by saturday at the latest!
-
I'll be honest, I don't know what you mean. :lol The laid back atmosphere in this song, the lyrics, the subtle touches of electric guitar, everything is so perfect in this song. What I know, though, is that our tastes are indeed different. ;)
Well, I'll try to keep my perfect score the same for the next rounds, I guess. Or not. :lol I'm still really enjoying this though, so nothing to worry about.
-
It's really hard to put it into words, I guess some songs just connect with you and others don't. please don't kill me
Also don't forget that while it lost I still enjoyed it and I think it's a really good song. That goes for both of your other submissions too. :)
-
Stop sending so many great songs, dude. :lol
edit: sent.

Sorry
I've sent. Hopefully both Mora and Evermind win this round.

Oh Tom Bombadil, how you've warmed my heart this afternoon.

No song from Mora this round either, so as I said last time Buddyhunters song will be graded on a scale from 0 to 3.
Senecadawg2 vs Tom Bombadil
Senecadawg2: Seventh Wonder Unbreakable
Super melodic, catchy, and downright fun progressive metal.
I think this describes the song really well, I can only agree. Progressive music was never about the instrumental wankery for me, it was always the melodies and the song structures and the concepts that drew me in, this has all the things I loved about Dream Theater when I first got into them and it's just a plain fun listen every time. I knew the singer from Ayreons Theory of Everything and just like there I loved the performance. I really can't think of any real criticism for this song and the fact that it's from a concept album only makes me want to check it out more (I have a thing for concept albums)! Chorus is great, keyboards sounds great, great song!
Tom Bombadil: Steve Hackett Every Day
This was a song that I was instantly curious about when I got it. Genesis is one of my favorite bands and I actually saw Hackett live a few months ago on the Genesis revisited tour, I have however never explored his solo material. The first few minutes of the song are ok but nothing special, the second half on the other hand is amazing and really highlights what I love about Hacketts guitar playing, it's going straight to my list of top Hackett solos. Unfortunately in this match it became a matter of a song that I fully enjoyed the whole way through versus a song where I only loved half.
Winner: senecadawg2 (the unbreakable)
Scorpion vs Evermind
Scorpion: Ne Obliviscaris Forget Not
I'm not going to lie, I love long songs. It's one of the reasons why I got into prog in the first place. Because I love them so much I do feel the need to be a bit harder on them, and this song would have benefitted from a little editing in my opinion. It has a good intro, but after listening to it for 3 minutes I feel like I'm ready to take the step to the next part of the song. Instead it goes on for another 3 minutes and the song feels less focused as a whole because of it. The last half is pretty great though, not gonna lie. I'm quite torn on how to feel about this song, it's definitely good but I don't see myself going out of my way to listen to it.
Evermind: Sonata Arctica It Won't Fade
This is a pretty straight-forward song, but a pretty good one. I always have a hard time explaining what I like or don't like about songs like this (no shit!) but I definitely enjoyed this one. As with many other songs in this roulette the chorus is a highlight for me, yet another one to get stuck in my head! I always looked forward to listening to it when listening through all the submissions and that's always the sign of a good song!
Winner: Evermind
Buddyhunter: Dir En Grey Vinushka
I have often heard this band being described as all over the place, I definitely see where that's coming from! As an avid anime fan I'm quite used to japanese lyrics in songs and I really enjoyed hearing it in a more progressive environment. The thing about it is that even after listening to it numerous times I have a hard time getting a grip of the song as a whole, it definitely has a lot of good parts that I enjoy as well as some I'm not as fond of. The former outweighs the latter though and I always enjoyed listening to it.
Grade: 1,5
Best song of the round: senecadawg2
New standings:
1. senecadawg2 16
2. Scorpion 8
3. Buddyhunter1 6,5

6. MoraWintersoul 3

Tom Bombadil vs. MoraWintersoul (probably not)
I'm moving to Gothenburg tomorrow to start university, I don't know how busy I will be but I will try to keep results coming as fast as possible. It might take a little while longer than it has been taking so far though. I would like to have submissions for round 5 by tuesday, since all of you have been fairly quick with sending in previous rounds I'm not too worried. Let the sending begin!
-
Holy shit seneca slow down!
Will send tomorrow.
-
Can't say I expected to win that one. I'm just glad you liked the song.
The pace of this roulette is fantastic. :tup
Probably will send tomorrow.
-
Finally, I won a matchup! 3 points is a start, though roulette is coming to its end. :lol
In fact, the melody that comes up after a quiet part in It Won't Fade is fantastic, first played on guitar, then on vocals starting with "we'll move along, well fed puppy". I think I'm going to spin this album right now. :D
I'll send something tomorrow.
-
It Won't Fade is so good that I don't really mind losing to it, actually.
Also sent.
-
Oh, and by the way:
I really can't think of any real criticism for this song and the fact that it's from a concept album only makes me want to check it out more (I have a thing for concept albums)!
Don't freak out when you hear the spoken parts. :rollin
-
Yeah, they are hilariously bad. The rest of that album is bliss, but man...
-
:o
I'm glad you liked the song! Your comments suggest that you'll also really like the album, so yay for that. As for the voice acting, just go with it. So long as you don't take 'em too seriously, I don't think it'll bother you too much.
Quick question before I send - is the final round still going to be one song per contestant, and how is it going to be scored? Unless you mean to make that bit a surprise until after this round, I'd like to know before deciding on my song for this round.
-
The final round will be three matches as usual. One for the first place between the two top scorers, one for third place and so on. Nothing really special.
-
So points don't matter after this round?
-
Nope, only placement.
-
Alright, then I'm resending. Don't listen to what I already sent.
EDIT: Re-sent.
-
I wanna know what you just tried sending, Scorp.
-
So, if I don't send the best song in this round, I have totally no hope for even third place, because Tom Bombadil is going to receive something different than 0.
I really need to think my submission through.
-

Well, yeah. :lol

Well, I should've cared about it earlier, shouldn't I? Now it's a bit too late to change these things, I guess. :-[
Whatever! Sent mine.
-
So points don't matter after this round?
This is the Whose Song Is It Anyway? Roulette.
-
Sent.
-
Results this weekend at the latest. I'm probably going to stick to one week rounds for the last two rounds as I don't have as much time to listen to the submissions.
-
Sorry it took so long, I've been super busy and the next will probably take about the same time. Count on final results next weekend.
Senecadawg2 vs Evermind
senecadawg2: Journey Of a Lifetime
Well, if you didn't tell me in your PM I probably wouldn't have thought this was the same Journey :lol, This sounds kind of like Pink Floyd to me. solid guitar playing all around, I love the main guitar melody from the intro. The ending solo is also great, overall the guitar is easily my favourite thing about this song. It's pretty damn good, and probably one I will be adding to my mixed Spotify list after this is all done.
Evermind: Kamelot Memento Mori
Did I ever mention I love concept albums? Well, one of the things I love about them is that they allow for extremely grand conclusions as they have the entire album as build-up. Even though I haven't actually heard the entire album I can almost feel the weight of the entire thing coming to it's climax in this song. Very strong melodies everywhere in this song, every part is great. I will definitely be checking this album out in the furure, amazing song! :tup
Winner: Evermind
Scorpion vs Buddyhunter1
Scorpion: Myrath My Inner War
You described this as a pretty safe song to send, and while that might be true that doesn't make it any less good. This is pretty standard prog metal, but it's done very well. Great riffs all over the place, I also love the bass in this song, so groovy! I don't really have that much to say other than that I really liked it.
Buddyhunter1: O.S.I. - Head
I was expecting O.S.I. To be sent during this roulette but I always though it would be sent by Mora! Anyway, I've heard a lot about them and this sounds pretty much exactly as I expected it to sound. The first time I listened to it I didn't really enjoy it that much, but it has grown on me since this. My favorite part about it is probably the overall sound and production of it. Good song, might check more of this out in the future if I'm on the right mood.
Winner: Scorpion
Tom Bombadil: Subsignal The Size of Life on Earth
:D This song makes me very happy, everything about it is so hopeful! The instrumentation, the chorus, listening to this song just makes me feel like everything is going to be ok. Really good song, and one that I will definitely come back to whenever I need a mood boost!

Final matchups!
Grand Final: senecadawg2 vs Scorpion
Bronze Match: Tom Bombadil vs Evermind
Match for 5th place: Buddyhunter1 vs MoraWintersoul (You still have to send a song to win!)
Ok, just one round left! It's been fun and I've found a lot of new music to discover. Hopefully you've all had fun as well and have been saving the best for last!
-
Losing in a roulette? Send a song from The Black Halo. ;D
So, one last effort for the third place then...
-
So I could literally send ANYTHING this round and I'll get 5th place either way? :lol
-
Alright Nelly it's on!
-
It sounds like you enjoyed the song, and I wasn't particularly concerned about winning the matchup anyways, so that's a good result in my book.
Now on to the final.
Alright Nelly it's on!
I'm going to fuck you all the way back to Ecuador.

I'm going to fuck you all the way back to Ecuador.
Which is funny 'cause I had a fling with a girl in Ecuador called Nelly. NUGGETZ

That's what losing side says all the time.
Wait, you're competing for the first place, and I can only get the third. Damn.
I will definitely be checking this album out in the furure, amazing song! :tup
For the full experience, start with Epica (the album) and only then get to The Black Halo, it's two-album story.

I have sent.
seneca, if you're game, I can PM you what I sent.

That's a funny coincidence! And of course I'm game; I'll send you my submission as well. :corn

I was half-kidding, anyway. :)
Sent my second favourite song of all time (and also sent another song in case our host heard the first one before)

This is it, the moment you've all been waiting for! (or at least maybe slightly been looking forward to?)
Grand Final: senecadawg2 vs Scorpion
senecadawg2: Headspace Daddy Fucking Loves You
Wow, what a song. This just has it all, from the beautiful opening to the heavy riffing in the middle to the grand ending. This song has all that I would want from a prog mini-epic and it's certainly among the best I have recieved in the entire roulette. The Vocals are amazing as well, I recognize the singer from Into the Electric Castle and he is as great here as he was there. Great flow throughout the song with every part offering something fresh, amazing song! :hefdaddy
Scorpion: Sigh Amnesia
This is a cool song. I have never heard anything really like it, it has a very distinct sound to it. I'm generally not a big fan of the vocals but the instumental work in this song is outstanding, especially in the second half of the song (except for the last minute or so). Very cool and unique song, might check out more in the future.
Winner: senecadawg
Bronze Match: Evermind vs Tom Bombadil
Evermind: Dire Straits Telegraph Road
No, I haven't heard this song before although I knew it existed. I always enjoy hearing a classic rock band do a long song as they are often quite different from a standard prog epic. This feels more like one long song as opposed to some longer songs that are just pieced together from different parts. Anyway, this song really struck a chord with me. It has some really good melodies during the verses and the guitar playing is excellent (as expected of mr. Knopfler). Overall, a very enjoyable song. The only thing I didn't really like about it was the sudden fade out, not a fan of those.
Tom Bombadil: Thoughts Factory No Way Out
Fun fact: this is the first song of the roulette that I was unable to find lyrics for online! Anyway, this is a rather straightforward prog metal song, these guys are clearly talented though. Impressive instrumental work throughout the song and some solid melodies during the chorus. Overall it sounds promising for a debut and I will keep an eye out for these guys in the future.
Winner: Evermind
(Match for) 5th place: Buddyhunter1 vs MoraWintersoul
Buddyhunter1: Type O Negative Everything Dies
This song didn't really click for me unfortunately. It has some good moments but as a whole this isn't something I would go out of my way to listen to. You still win the match though!
Winner: Buddyhunter1
Final Standings:
1. senecadawg2
2. Scorpion
3. Evermind
4. Tom Bombadil
5. Buddyhunter1
6. MoraWintersoul
I would like to thank everyone who took part in this roulette, I've had a lot of fun and I now have a lot of new music to check out! Big congratulations to seneca for winning, even though everyone sent me plenty of great songs noone deserved the top spot quite as much as you! I hope it's been as fun for you as it has been for me! Thank you again for participating! ;D
-
Congrats seneca!
Damn you.
-
I really enjoyed this roulette, SLH!
Like I mentioned in my message, I think that the head-to-head format of it spiced things up really nicely. I'm happy that you were able to find a lot of great music, so yeah... Thank you!
Congrats seneca!
Damn you.
Beating you is an honor in itself ;D
and I'm glad to say that I also discovered some music in this roulette, from you! so thanks
-
This was lots of fun. Thanks for running it so smoothly SLH! :tup
Grats Seneca.
-
Telegraph Road is just fantastic, really. I'm glad it secured the third place for me, especially against such a talented newcomer to the metal scene as Thoughts Factory. If you said you didn't like the song, I would have been severely disappointed.
Thanks for running this! Third place is good enough for me, and I really enjoyed participating in this, so thanks a lot! And of course, congrats Seneca. You and Scorp were like the only ones I've won the match against in the regular rounds, so it's all good. :D
