Title: Dork Castle's Roulette V.Can You Feel it? Round 6 Results! Time for Rd.7
Post by: Dark Castle on July 24, 2014, 08:54:27 AM
What is up bruhs? It's time for my GAWT DANG roulette, and I was wondering if you wanted to take part in it. I need 8 dorks, and I'm giving ya'll an opportunity to be one of those 8 dorks. There's going to be 8 rounds, and here's how they'll break down. Ideas from other roulettes I've been a part of have definitely not been used as inspiration, for sure, totally, definitely, yeah, hm hm.

1. Opening Round (Free Round): Submit whatever the fuck you want you dorks.
2. Atmospherical: I want to feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel it, ya dig? (Music that builds an atmosphere, can be any kind of atmosphere)
3. Pop: I want you to send me some pop music.
4. Crushing: I want music that crushes me, emotionally, ear wise, whatever, I want to feel like somebody's dropping a piano on me.
5. Your Favorite Band: Show me some of your favorite music, unless it's on my band list already, I wanna get to know what makes your ears erect.
6. Bring Back The Decimating Memories of Loooooooooooove: Show me a song that you listened to that helped you get over a break up. If you've never had a love, wow you dork, send me something that helped you get over something painful in your life that happened.
7. New Band: Send me a new band you've been listening to that you got into this year.
8. Final Round (Free Round): Well dorks, you've reached the end, submit whatever the fuck you want, you earned it.

Now songs will get a short to moderate amount of my reaction and thoughts on each song, and they will be rated on a scale of 1-10. Please don't earn yourselves 1's, 1's are for geeks, not dorks.

Now for my Banned Band List:

Speaking of the colored bands…

If it's not too much of an inconvenience to you (or the other dorks), would you mind changing it to a brighter color?

I'm color blind and the pink against my darker background theme looks practically identical to the white text. I'm straining my eyes trying to find them all.  :-\

Yeah I shall change it, that pink wasn't as nearly as vibrant as I was hoping it would be.
EDIT:Changed to Yellow, let me know if ya'll can see it clear enough!

3.Fallujah
4.Rivers of Nihil

Senecadawg2: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not
Right off the bat, I can tell this song is going to build up into a beast. The stringed instruments are lush and boy oh boy are they gorgeous, especially accompanying that acoustic guitar, and when the song finally kicks into drive about halfway through, it still keeps that gorgeous quality to it, I wasn’t really expecting the clean vocals that were in the foreground while the harsh vocals were in the background, it works wonderfully though. And when the harsh vocals do take over, it hits hard. I’ve had their album sitting in my iTunes for awhile, but I’ve never really gotten to them, I just know that a lot of people were really into them, and that they were one of Metal’s newest additions that people were excited about. I see what the buzz is about, and I’ll have to put their album on my phone now. I think they have a pretty unique sound to them, and I happen to love it.
9.5/10

GentemanofDread: The Prize Fighter Inferno - Run, Gunner, Run, Gunner Recall, Run! The Town Wants You Dead!
I thought I recognized those vocals! Very crafty of you :P Pretty much a couple seconds in I knew I was going to like this song. Admittedly it’s nothing incredible, but don’t get the wrong idea out of what I’m saying. It’s incredibly catchy, and I like the wonky stuff in the song. I’m most definitely going to have to check out more from this album, I imagine that it would make a wonderful addition to my “Walk to School” list. Sorry I don’t have more to say, but the above is pretty much how I feel. An enjoyable song that doesn’t necessarily rock my world, but would definitely make my walks to school a more enjoyable affair.

7.5/10

Zantera: Neurosis - Stones From the Sky
I recommend the fuck out of this band to people, even though I’ve only extensively listened to their most recent album :lol, I have some other ones in my iTunes I’m just a lazy fuck and have to much music to listen to heh, but from the reputation that precedes them, I know it’s a safe bet to recommend other albums of their’s.
I like the bells, give off sort of a spooky vibe that I associate with most bells. The first few seconds of the vocals I wasn’t really into it, but within a few more seconds they lock in on the vibe and I like them a lot more. And then Scott Kelly gets fur real as do the guitars and I’m just locked into the song. This is the kind of music that I dedicate an afternoon to, it’s not something I’ll listen to very often, usually because time runs short for me these days, but I will definitely devote the time for music like this because it makes for good music to focus on.
8.5/10

Onno: Rammstein - Ich Tu Dir Weh
So you happened to pick the one Rammstein album I’m familiar with, but I’m not going to be ridiculous and make you find something new, as I haven’t listened to it in soooooooooo long. Rammstein are weird, and I love that about them. The intro to this son is boss as fuck, and one of my favorite things about this song is how all the pieces just mold together to create a tune that’s rocking. Till Lindemann is a guy I admire, he has a presence about himself that I’ve always been drawn to. I’ve always liked the disturbing imagery their lyrics create, and Till Lindemann’s wunderbar voice accompanied with the forceful music always sounds radical
8.5/10

MoraWinterSoul: Dekka1184(Cover of Windir’s - Journey To The Rave)
This music makes me wanna find some glow in the dark supplies, my friend’s backlights, and party into the night. This is definitely something a friend of mine back home would listen to, and while it’s not something you’d normally see me listening to, you’d hear no complaints from me as we drove down main street, duck facing and head bobbing. It ebbs and flows pretty nicely, a lot of slower parts to let ya catch your breath before you throw yourself back in. And then minute 3 kicks in and dat synth is something I’d listen to for days. I love synths, especially when people get a rad sound out of them, and I like like like the sound of this one. And then just before minute 4 another part comes in and I’m like “WHAT!? NOW THERE’S TWO SYNTH LINES, AW YISSSS”. And it doesn’t stop, more and more is added and I love it all.
A very pleasant surprise, I just might have to throw this on next time my friends and I hang out.
9/10

Sacul: David Maxim Micic - Where Is Now?
I know those are keys in the beginning, but I’m the biggest sucker for things that sound like xylophones, marimbas, etc, and I love the beginning. I really like the tone of the guitars, they’re chunky and full, and I like the djent elements. When the vocals come in, it’s just a beautiful achievement on top of everything else, which is already sound fantastic. This is a ridiculously beautiful song, it swells with emotion, and it just flows on, never really getting old. Like when that violin? solo comes in, followed by the soaring vocals, gawsh it’s really pretty. And then it gets zany around the 5 minute mark, and it just goes into it perfectly. That guitar solo is weird, but it definitely rocks. I will most definitely be checking the rest of this album out, because if this is anything to go off of, I’m looking forward to some gorgeous music.
9/10

Progdrummer: Trioscapes - Blast off
Sax, bass, drums, all played by radical musicians; now this is something I can dig. This is something a friend of mine here at school would have playing in his car. It’s a very energetic song, and it grooves very tastily, I loooooove the bass guitar in this song, it is suhweet. The sax is going ham, and I like it when instruments go absolutely ham. There’s not really too much I can say about this song other than that it’s a fucking great instrumental piece, and this is a band I’ve heard about on Metalsucks.net and various places, but never got around to checking them out. I will have to get to that, as I would love to hear more from these guys.
8/10

Webraider: Fair To Midland - Heavens To Murgatroyd/ Whiskey & Ritalin
My buddy Heretic listens to these guys, but I never really thought to check them out, I just know that they have a following here. Let me tell you, I wasn’t expecting what I heard. I was certain these guys were really light proggy stuff, but that riff is heavy, and is energetic as fuck. I like how the vocals are the opposite of how music, it builds up a diverse sound. I really like the vocals though, they’re kind of dreamy, and sound fantastic. I will most certainly have to finally listen to more of these guys, as I wasn’t expecting what I heard what soever.
8.5/10

Adace: Carcass - Unfit For Human Consumption
I actually own this album lol, but I never get past the first few songs, not because I don’t like what I’m hearing, in fact I love what I’m hearing, but my music ADD always kicks in with this band and I go listen to whatever urge hits me. The riffage is delicious as fuck, the solos are radical, and I for one am glad Amott is nowhere near this, those riffs wouldn’t have been nearly as good if he had been. Carcass also have some fantastic vocals that are pretty easy to tie to them, and as always I love their drummer, his cymbal work is tasty and his playing is extremely tight. I guess I should resist the urge to listen to whatever comes to mind and stick it out for the rest of the album, seeing as I missed a kick ass song like this.
8.5/10

Senecadawg2: 9.5
MoraWinterSoul: 9
Sacul: 9
Zantera: 8.5
Onno: 8.5
Webraider: 8.5
Adace: 8.5
Progdrummer: 8
GentlemanofDread: 7.5

What a wonderful opening round guys! Ya’ll brought some excellent music to the table, and it hints at this Roulette being full of radular music!
So without further ado, let’s kick off Round 2: Atmospherical. I want your submissions to ooze a mood/feeling, and I want them to encase me in said mood/feeling.

There's a certain band that I wanted to save for a later round, but I would be shocked if no one uses them for this round. They seem to be a very popular submission whenever the word 'atmosphere' is mentioned.

There's a certain band that I wanted to save for a later round, but I would be shocked if no one uses them for this round. They seem to be a very popular submission whenever the word 'atmosphere' is mentioned.
I think I know who you're talking about - let's see if we don't happen to send him the same song :lol.

Still need a submission from Adace.
Depending on if they get their submission to me today, I'd have results up Wednesday. I still have to listen to submissions, I moved into my new apartment yesterday  :hat and our internet's getting set up today so I didn't have a chance to listen to any submissions yesterday between the moving and ultra relaxing that happened afterwards.

If he doesn't send anything today, I'll just check in with him.

Round 2 Results: ATMOSPHERICAL
MoraWinterSoul: Anneke van Giersbergen & Danny Cavanagh - The Blower’s Daughter
Anneke! I always tell myself I ought to listen to more of her since I always find her amazing on the Devin Townsend Project albums Addicted and Epicloud. The guitar builds a calming atmosphere, and along with her voice, this is quite simply a treat for the ears. It’s incredibly soothing, and her voice drips with emotions, and soars later in the cover. The end has this chilling effect, when the acoustic guitar becomes minimalistic, and Anneke gets more and more quiet. A great submission Mora!
8.5/10

Senecadawg2: Clint Mansell - Death is the Road to Awe
Right away this builds this dense cloud of melancholy. The music flows gracefully, slowing building up, tensing at what’s possibly about to come. It would fit I imagine into a suspense movie, it keeps you on your toes, all the while building up, becoming more and more forceful, percussion seeps in, only to drawn back, before bleeding in. This song has completely drawn me into it. Around 5:20, things begin to feel like there might be an actual climax, everything begins to come in, bells, some white noise, guitar, and suddenly it’s all gone, but not for long as it comes right back, and my gawd it’s simply beautiful, in a forlorn way. AND THEN, the climax finally happens, voices soaring above bombastically dramatic music and it sends chills down your spine. Knocked it out of the park dawg.
10/10

GentlemanofDread: White Willow - Storm Season
Pulsing, haunted vocals, I like where this is heading. It drips this bone chilling atmosphere, only getting more and more haunting, in almost a playful way, with the strings starting around 2:00, dancing with mysterious tendrils. I really enjoyed this, and I’m definitely going to have to check out more from this group, as I really liked what I heard. I could see myself playing this a lot during October, when I get my halloween spirit on!
8.5/10

WebRaider: Nothing More - Pyre
Stormy weather slowly builds up, immediately giving this feeling of chill and bleakness. From the sound of it, the wind has a biting nip to it, and you can almost feel it biting at you yourself, as an icy water sloshes around limply. A little bit before the 3 minute mark, a monologue comes in, along with musical elements, only adding to this icy, bleak atmosphere. Oddly enough, the atmosphere begins to change, as though the sun has come out from behind the clouds, and you can feel the warmth hit your skin, and soak into your bones. Around 5:15, I wasn’t really expecting it to develop into this at all. it almost takes me out of it, I actually liked how bleak it was, and even that little ray of warmth, but this just wasn’t expected. I might warm(ha) up to it eventually, but it’s left me a bit jarred. But it does start raining, and bleakness does come back. Overall I liked this, I’ll have to listen to it more along with other music of theirs.
7.5/10

Sacul: Ulver -Eos
Churchlike keys open up the song, giving it this dusty, archaic feel to it, and when the vocals come in, it adds to that. The instrumentation in this song lends to create this outlandish feeling, an exotic beauty, and overall it’s charming as fuuuuuuuuck. This sounds like bedtime music, and I don’t mean that to sound like it’d put me to sleep, it would ease my mind, it’s got a soothing beauty to it.
9.5/10

PROGdrummer: Storm Corrosion - Ljudet Innan
Man you are lucky. I did not like this album one bit when it came out awhile ago, but I revisited it and liked what I heard more recently. It has an ethereal, dream like edge to it, and Mikael sounds pretty good. And when the guitar scone in a little bit more prominently, it’s luscious and fetching. It really brings things back up when Steven Wilson comes in vocally, as sometimes it feels a bit too empty before that point, but nonetheless it’s a lovely song, and when the guitar gets the foreground, some appealing sounds arise.
7.5/10

Onno: Ludovico Einaudi - Passaggio
Piano’s are always a bitchin instrument to create atmosphere. The feeling I get from this song is memories of the past, the motions mingled about those memories. Overall though, the song doesn’t really grab me though. I can feel the atmosphere, but it just doesn’t quite hit me with any emotions, for me it’s simply a well played piano piece. I know you said you took a risk Onno, and I appreciate risk takers! However this one didn’t really win me over, but it was far from a stinker as well so keep up the risks!
6/10

Zantera: Alcest - Écailles De Lune Pt. 2
Alcest! I’ve heard their past two albums, which I know are different from their past two, Shelter and Les Voyages, which I know are quite the departure, but I love this! The vocals are extreme, and they’re dripping with emotion all the same. The song feels urgent, but unlike a lot of black metal which focuses on other things, this song completely focuses on what feel the song gives off, like when that guitar comes in around 4:50, gorgeous stuff, and as the clean vocals come in, a completely different feeling takes over. I will absolutely have to check out a lot more from Alcest, seeing as I’ve found out I enjoy past and present Alcest.
9/10

Adace: Hammock - Breathturn
The song has a soothing quality to it, that washes over me like gentle waves. Guitars weave around drenched with bliss, as voices, thick with effects flow overtop, creating this absolutely gorgeous sound overall. There’s not too much more to say other than that I absolutely love this song Adace, I think you did a fantastic job this round!
9.5/10

:sadpanda: Well I knew I was taking a risk with the particular song I sent... I think the atmosphere moves from the sound of the storm, water, ocean to the echoing monologue but can see having to come around to it.

There's a certain band that I wanted to save for a later round, but I would be shocked if no one uses them for this round. They seem to be a very popular submission whenever the word 'atmosphere' is mentioned.
I think I know who you're talking about - let's see if we don't happen to send him the same song :lol.

Same song I would have sent, too.

I think I might know which band and album you guys are talking about and I may also have sent a song from it.  :lol Inb4 Dylan gets 2-3 songs from the same band.

Alcest was the third option that I was considering. Always a good send for an atmosphere round, I'm glad he enjoyed it.

I also love this song! Although I enjoy the original Damien Rice version more, this is a great cover and I'm glad to see it getting some love.

I agree with Top Dork, there was a lot of great music sent this round. At least, by my standards. And I'm thrilled to have pleased with my own submission. I cannot recommend that soundtrack enough, Dylan. Or the movie that it comes from: The Fountain. It's probably my second favorite of all time, and part of that has to do with how stunning the score is.

Round 3 Results:
Senecadawg2: Sarah Fimm - Paradise
A more chill song, I really dig Sarah’s voice, it’s pretty dope. Musically, the piano is warm, but it feels a little barren musically nonetheless, which is kind of interesting when you consider the song’s called paradise. I like it though, it works well with this song. The song doesn’t ever really climax though, and I think that’s the one thing that I can say I didn’t quite like, otherwise, good song.
7/10

Webraider: Destiny Potato - Dark Sid of You
I know of this band! But that’s okay, I’ve had the album sitting dormant for a little bit, TOO MUCH MUSIC TO LISTEN TO, ya know? What catches me hook line and sinker with this band is how catchy that djent loveliness is. It’s like an ear worm, and then you put two fantastic female vocalists on top of it and it’s going to be one hard mother fucker to dig out. I don’t know if the song could have used some trimming or not, one moment I think it could have, but the next I’m saying to myself “GWEN, WHAT THE HECK WERE YA THINKING, GAWSH. Mainly it’s when the instrumental sections happen, sometimes they drag a little bit, get a little bit overindulgent(the guitar solo, sick solo, just kind doesn’t quite feel justified, but damn it I still love it). Other than that, I’ll have to finally put the album on and take the time to probably enjoy the HECK out of it.
8/10

MoraWinterSoul: Regina Spektor - Samson
I’ve heard this name a butt ton, but I just never bothered checking her out. Thank you for sending this song, it’s right up my alley. DAT voice of hers. So breathy, and gorgeous, and it just dances along on top of the piano. I must get all of her stuff immediately, and I must weep tears as I fall in love with her music. Really, not much else I can say other than I absoFRICKINlutely love this. Way to go.
10/10

GentlemanofDread: Keane - Bedshaped
Some gorgeous keys build a lovely atmosphere along with that simple but effective beat. The vocalist has a lovely voice, wandering through the alleyways of the music. The chorus comes into it’s own very nicely, and the way it goes from the pre chorus to the chorus for some reason really makes me think of Matt Belemy from Muse. Can’t explain it, but eyeh. Overall, you sent a great song!(Also, a very chilling music video)
8.5/10

Zantera: Beach House - Other People
Another band I’ve heard of but never checked out, thanks for making me! Reverb drenched vocals glade across synths and some guitar which comes up more occasionally. The song has a dreamy landscape feel to it, perfect music to get lost in. It just feels like one of those dreams in which you just wander aimlessly and then suddenly start flying and it just makes me feel so light.
8.5/10

Adace: Janelle Monáe - Q.U.E.E.N.
I SAW HER AT BONNAROO OHMYGAWSH SHE WAS SO AWESOME. Unfortunately though I have her Electric Lady album and never develop or plan out the time to listen to it, except for the first few tracks. I do know that I absolutely love her though, her voice is like honey, and it flows over that funkadelic awesomeness radularly. Thank you for reminding me that I need to put aside some time to listen to her album in full!
9/10

Sacul: Flying Colors - Fool in my Heart
Oof, you picked the wrong Flying Colors song. The music itself is pleasant, but Mike Portnoy just isn’t meant for the microphone, and something about how he sits in the mix doesn’t please my ears too much. Don’t take this too roughly, you’ve been sending ballin music, and you will continue to, but you swung and missed this time. Keep on fighting the good fight. The music itself is tight though, which kind of saves you from a real mean score.
5/10

Onno: Flying Colors - Kayla
Another Flying Colors song (insert a laugh emoticon here) Too tired and lazy to bother looking up the name of the vocalist, but he has a fantastic voice, and from the one time I listened to the album, he was always a highlight. Musically the song grooves pretty well, everything sits well with each other. I’d say the weakest part of the song is probably the chorus, not saying it’s bad, just the weakest link of an overall great song. Nice submission, I just might have to revisit the album, just gotta make sure to skip a certain song.
7/10

PROGdrummer: Submotion Orchestra - Always
Immediately, got some of that moody goodness, and a tight drumbeat going. I can dig it. Next thing I know vocals are tip toeing around the music, and it sounds great. I can see this being great party music next time my friends are over, it just sits well in that way I feel. Overall a fantastic submission mang, It’s not something I’d listen to often, but when I would, I would always love it, and I have a friend or two who probably already knows these guys, but if not would absolutely love them.
8/10

Senecadawg2: 19.5+7 = 26.5
MoraWinterSoul: 17.5+10= 27.5

Onno: 14.5+7=21.5

Adace: 18+9= 27

Alright, so with that said, overall a great round guys, loving all the music I've got to now catch up on!

So Round 4, is all about the crushing music. That can be musically, lyrically, I think you guys can dig it. A great example would be The Ocean and their album "Pelagial". That album covers the gamut of what it means to be crushing. The music falls down an abyss, and leaves your body mangled by the end, while sometimes it's the lyrics that tear your heart to shreds. I want the music you guys send to do this. The best of luck to you all!

Sooooo. I was up really late last night and got everything all listened to and rated, sooooooooo.....

ROUND 4 RESULTS MA'FLIPPAS.

MoraWinterSoul: Giant Squid - Sevengill (Notorynchus Cepedianus)
Aw yisss, Post Rock creates some of the most crushing music imaginable. It never goes hella hard ala extreme metal, but the atmosphere bands create is suffocating, and chilling quite often. And when there are bands that have lyrics, they’re Woods of Ypres level, and just severely soul crushing. Giant Suid know what the hell’s up, and this song put a weight on my shoulders. Way to go. Also dear god that stringed instrument that plays into whats musically the heaviest part of the song which makes itself comfortable for the rest of the song and wails you. Ohmy'Lanta.
9.5/10
(I just wanna post an excerpt of the lyrics from this song, because gawt damn)
Quote
Please come to the bay, see who now lives on the bottom
I'd like to have some last words before I forget how to walk upon these muddy shores and entirely cease to breathe like a man
Seeing things only with the tips of my hands
My heart is crushed by the jaws of regret
Upon knowing where you now make your bed
The depths at which I've chained to you
I pray those shackles eventually rust through
Held under by chiton like lies
Amongst the corpses
I'll never surface

Senecadawg2: The Human Abstract
I had this album back in 2011, and would listen to it occasionally, but for some reason I just fell out of listening to it. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.
“PULL ME FROM THE GALLOWS” *Sweet motherfucking guitar*
Ya done good bruh. This song throws away the notion that you get a break, and pummels you with radical technical metal, the way our lord and savior intended it to be. I love the break neck changes that happen through out the song, it to a degree reminds me of this band Desecravity, who play a more extreme flavor of tech death, but they go through these break neck changes that all somehow flow and these guys know how to do the same. A good neck breaker this song here.
9/10

Sacul: Porcupine Tree - Heartattack In A Layby
I was hoping somebody would send Porcupine Tree at some point in this roulette, as I only have listened to Deadwing and Fear Of a Blank Planet(both of which I love), but I knew there was so much more I need to listen to, I just haven’t gotten around to it. The lyrics wash over in icy waves, lapping at my heart, and I feel like I need to go lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and contemplate serious matters. On top of the lyrics and how they’re presented, the music itself is a melancholic beast of it’s own, that builds a tension in my heart. Gawt damn.
9/10

Zantera: Celeste - Dans Ta Salive, Sur Sa Peau
IMMEDIATE BLAST BEATS AND GUITAR ATTACK. You get me man. I’m loving this from the get go, and the vocals are vicious. The attack is relentless, even when the music changes up, it’s still like a hive of bees all swarming around my head, while the vocalist decides to enter my ears and start stinging like a madman. And it’s a whole 9 fucking minutes of it too, from past 3 minutes on it starts to slow down, and around 720 HERE COMES THE HIVE AGAIN. Lovely stuff man, absolutely lovely in how I’m probably going to die from all of these bee stings.
9/10

Onno: Verdi - Requiem: Dies Irae
Ah, this song. An instantly recognizable piece, voices wailing, as frenzied string and brass instruments scurry along. It can be very overwhelming, like in those cartoons of yonder where a character’s hair would just be blown back from some intense force. And then about 3/4 of the way through the song, things quiet down, becoming more playful, only to see that the lyrics are pretty damn menacing. Nice touch.
8.5/10

GentlemanofDread: Roger Waters - Three Wishes
This is purrty creepy. That monologue, and the wonky synth. And then about a minute in, everything else comes in, and it’s just got this "I’m going to drag your soul down this chasm right here, and I’ll do it for free” feel to it. And when Roger Waters comes in, it just furthers that notion, what with the fucking creepy effects on his voice that will come in. I’m going to have to listen to some fricking happy music tonight before I can go to bed. Something that pulls me out of the crushing despair is the female vocals that come in over him at times. Just doesn’t really fit the mood imo. Otherwise, fantastic song.
7.5/10

WebRaider: Boris - Riot Sugar
Boris, I see and hear of this band a lot, but as always, I’m too swamped to check them out. Thanks for sending this. The guitars are thick as molasses, and drenched in effects, which sound pretty great along with that drum kit. The haunted vocals overtop that fucking riff has me bobbing my head violently because man oh man does that sound radical as fuck. I just saved this album, and I may have to go on a binge listening session of this band now.
9/10

PROGdrummer: The Safety Fire - Huge Hammers
I have their most recent album, but I’ve only listened to a song or two from it.  A song called Huge Hammers shows a lot of promise, and musically it hits hard. Those guitars are most certainly huge hammers that wreck the fuck out of their surroundings. The vocals on the other hand aren’t that crushing, but you know what, they still fit with the music, and still sound incredible, so you won’t hear me knocking those at all. That chorus is pretty catchy too.
8/10

adace: Bloodbath -
I want to hug you for sending Bloodbath. I decided not to put them on my list of banned bands/artists, because while I’ve listened to the album that has “Eaten” on it more than just a bit, it’s been awhile and I haven’t dug into the rest of their catalog that’s just collecting dust on my computer. These guys are like a giant maul, slowly pummeling you to a pulp. Along with being musically heavy as a sack of bricks, the lyrics are just so brutal it just puts a big cheesy smile on my face as I’m windmilling.
9/10

With that said, it looks like it's time for RD.5 which is the "YOUR FAVORITE BAND" round. Send me something from your favorite band, unless they're on my list, ya know? Keep keeping it real folks, you're doing a wonderful job so far.

If you're talking about Pink Floyd, aside from Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, I've just got the rest sitting on my computer. I guess that takes a big chunk of sendables seeing as those are arguably their 3 most revered albums amongst most, I still have yet to explore any of their other work, because I'm a dork or something.

MoraWinterSoul: Chroma Key - Get Back In The Car
This is some chill music, and it’s atmosphere makes me think of the X-Files(in a good way). Vocals are spacey and effect laden, fitting in quite well with the music. All in all this song bleeds out atmosphere, which I like, as it keeps me in it. I’m not sure this is music I’d listen to very often, but right now it’s doing the job quite well, and I could see this being a band I listen to when I need to think. It wanders aimlessly almost, but the flow is there, and it’s a good one.
8/10

Zantera: Oceansize - A Homage to a Shame
Not sure how I feel about the clean vocals, they’re kind of close to that “radio hard rock” sound that can wear on me sometimes, but the music is a churning beast, bass thuds and guitars spit out riffage in a pleasing manner. The buildup around 1:20 that goes into that next section I’m starting to dig more, the vocals sound great here. Musically it explores, which I dug about the song, I just kind of wished the vocals matched the life the music breathes, they can be a bit underwhelming at times.
7.5/10

PROGdrummer: Genesis - The Cinema Show
Being honest, I’ve never really listened to Genesis aside from a few Phil Collins songs eheh. The song starts out gorgeously, it’s so soothing, brings back warm memories. The vocals actually sound pretty good with it, although I might see some people who don’t dig them, but I like them so that’s what counts lol. Around 2:00 when the song kind of kicks into another gear, that guitar sounds lush and tight. Sections flow incredibly well into each other, all of it gorgeous. The change of pace at 6:00 reminds me of the new Opeth album for a little bit, but it doesn’t suck like the new Opeth album, and sounds absolutely lovely. Overall, the entire song is very enjoyable, and I shall most definitely have to check out older Genesis now.
9/10

Senecadawg2: David Gray - Falling Free
Piano tunes, I can dig it. David Gray has a very folky voice, which I happen to enjoy (whatever emoticon I’m thinking of here) The song has a soothing effect to it, it makes me want to lay down, close my eyes and dream. I can’t really recall the lyrics, but I really liked them when I was listening. Thanks for sending this Seneca, this was an extremely pleasant listen, and I just might have to go listen to more from this guy. It kind of puts the mind to ease, and I could use that, after some of the events that have happened in the past day.
9/10

GentlemanofDread: Pink Floyd - Wearing the Inside Out
Dat smooth Sax, ungh. This song’s atmosphere is a sexy one, this is getting in the mood music right here. At least until the vocals come in lol. Not saying they’re bad, they actually sit well in the music, but they definitely change the mood. The song at 2:44, I can dig those synths, and the ensuing guitar solo which melts like butter in my mouth. I can pretty much dig everything about this song, and it’s definitely convinced me I should listen to more than Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon.
8.5/10

Sacul: David Maxim Micic - Wrinkle Maze
A second song from David Maxim Micic, let’s see what this holds in store for me! Right off the bat I think the song takes much to much building up, and while it sounds pretty, it almost sounds like a typical score. That is until about 3 minutes in some choir vocals come in along with some more concrete instrumentation. Unfortunately it still doesn’t really catch me much. The guitar solo that follows is sleek and full of drive, but I feel like I waited to long for it to come around. I’m guessing this is a transition song, I feel like it might work better if I had a sense of what came before and after it, but merely judging it on it’s own, it provides a pretty, if not underwhelming listen.
6/10

WebRaider: Corelia - Treetops
Periphery + Between the Buried and Me. That is this band, and stunning is all I can say. I’m actually aware of this band and have the album, but I didn’t really include them because I usually just listened to The Sound of Glaciers moving until recently. The guitar tone is lush and magnificent, the vocals are gorgeous, and the harsh vocals remind me of Tommy fromm BtBaM if only with more Dynamic, while the cleans remind me of Spencer from Periphery. Everything about this song is executed flawlessly, and I really can’t wait to finally get an album from these guys, I think the wait’s been long enough.
9.5/10

Adace: Black Sabbath - N.I.B
Gotta love Black Sabbath, I put this album on my record player every once and awhile, but not often enough it would seem. Tony Iommi is a master riffsman, he can write epic stuff or a catchy riff like this that doesn’t necessarily have the flashy frills. Ozzy Osbourne sounds fantastic on this record, and sounds great on this song. This song doesn’t really show it’s age to me, aside from it’s production, this song, and album in general have never gotten old. I think that speaks volumes about Black Sabbath, they created some timeless albums, and crafted some fantastic songs.
9/10

Round 5 Results for Onno:
Onno: Haken - In Memorium
Being honest, I don’t quite like Haken, they’re very hit or miss for me. That being said, this song is one of theirs that I enjoy. It’s focused, and reminds me of Porcupine Tree. That bass guitar is beefy, and I love beefy bass, especially when it’s more than just following the guitar. Their vocalist also sounds wonderful on this song. Overall this song sounds like it could belong on a heavier Porcupine Tree record with different vocals, which isn’t a bad thing at all. If Haken could be more like this, I’d probably like them a lot more, because when they cut down on what I find to be noodling, they shine brightly. There is a section that has with the keys member that I find a bit too wonky, but it doesn’t ruin the section.

Post by: Dark Castle on August 23, 2014, 11:36:56 AM
Let me apologize, it started off I was going to have results Wednesday when I found out I had (admittedly pretty simple and quick) homework, and then I had forgotten that I had a 12 hour day on Thursday, and then last night was over at a friends playing Red Dead Redemption while he recorded some bass for a friends and from their we went straight over to another friend's place for most of the night and by the time I got home I was out for the count. My apologies for delaying the results guys, entirely my fault.

But without further ado ROUND 6 RESULTS:

Senecadawg2: Kevin Gilbert- Song For a Dead Friend

melancholy pianos and a down trodden voice, this is some sad stuff. The sound of the song is one of looking back, and the lyrics reflect that. It’s a very pretty, depressed song, but one thing I don’t necessarily get down with is the vocals. They’re not bad, but they’re not something I really like either. He can obviously get the feel for the song, and he hits all the right notes, it’s just something about his voice itself that I don’t necessarily jive with. Other than that minor complaint, this was a great submission, one that I might have to save for the future.

8/10

GentlemanofDread: Johnny Cash - Hurt

Ahh, Johnny Cash, my dad’s a huge fan of Cash, and this song is definitely a familiar one. Back in early high school, you could say I was still religious, and along with going to Catholic church, I would go with my friend to his non-denominational church’s weekly youth night, and they loved to play this song before a certain part of the night full of prayer. For that reason, I kind of connect to it religious ties as opposed to tough times, although it certainly could give that feel, I’m aware of that. It’s not a song I really care for anymore, but at the same time it brings back memories of my friend and I dicking around and not paying much attention to all the religious shit going on around us, and I can appreciate that.

6.5/10

Onno: Porcupine Tree - Feel So Low

Another entry from Porcupine Tree, this song musically feels like sun washing all over me, meanwhile the lyrics describe feeling so low, and it really makes this song into something ultra fantastic. This is quite literally a perfect breakup song, while it makes me feel better the lyrics perfectly describe how one would feel. Fantastic entry Onno, This is without a doubt a song I will keep close by for any future breakup, or when I’m feeling like dirt, it is just absolutely amazing.

10/10

Sacul: Destiny Potato - Love Song

Another song from Destiny Potato I see, and entitled Love Song no less, let’s see how she goes. A nice chunky riff accompanied by some wonky vocals that shed their weirdest effects for the lovely vocals from Destiny Potato that I know of. The lyrics certainly fit within in the theme, and the synths going on behind give this song such an upbeat feel. I like that section around 2:14 that only lasts for a few seconds, but the blast beats and aggression is something I can definitely dig. The chorus is pretty tight too.(By the way, from what you’ve sent me, I’ve gotta ask do you know of Look Right Penny? They’re not active anymore do to their vocalist having to battle cancer :C but I feel like you would love them if you haven’t heard of them already!) I like the bass, and I love the part around 3:50, the playful music behind those lyrics :lol it brings a little laughter to my face. Great submission dude.

9/10

Adace: Mono - Follow The Map

This is a band I always mean to check out but just never get around to. Piano, strings, and what sounds like the little bell set(mini xylophone yay!) I had in elementary school gives this song a pull at the ol’ heart strings. Finding beauty in other things is a great way to get over a break up, and this song makes beautiful seem like an insult, it’s absolutely gorgeous, and the music video is quite pretty as well, not that that has anything to do with how I’ll rate it, but it is so nyeh! I will definitely make sure next time I get the urge to check these guys out that I actually do!

9.5/10

PROGdrummer: Porcupine Tree - Time Flies

Aww yissss, more Porcupine Tree, this time from The Incident. I’ve never checked this one out, mainly due to how split down the middle it seems to have fans, who either really like it, or find it pretty lacking compared to their past work. All I know is that this song makes me feel better, and nothing’s even wrong right now, it’s just a gorgeous song that lifts up my spirits. Guess I’ll now have to check out The Incident, as I really liked this. Also saving this for any future break ups.

9/10

Zantera: American Football - Never Meant

A very pretty song, the drums lay down a lovely beat and the guitars sound pristine and lifting. When the vocals come in, it brings back the late ’90s/early 2000’s for me, which I definitely like. The lyrics are pretty tight too. Overall this is a song that I could definitely find myself listening to after a break up, on the long walks that follow break ups for me. Fantastic submission all around, I’ll have to check out more from these guys, and save this one on a post-breakup playlist.

9.5/10

WebRaider: Alter Bridge - Blackbird

I’m a mild fan of Alter Bridge, I find their newest album absolutely radical, but never really cared to check their past work out due to experiencing a pretty awful live performance from them. But two of my best friends absolutely love Alter Bridge, and this song is one they would never stop talking about, and would often listen to, and I would absently daydream about other things. Shame on me, it’s a great song, a melancholic feel permeates the song, which when experiencing a tough breakup or event in my life, I always need something either ridiculously happy, or melancholic, and this fits the bill. Myles Kennedy dazzles with his voice, while Tremonti lays down some gawt dang solid guitar. Great submission!

A fantastic round guys, you really outdid yourselves!

So Round 7 would appear to be the new band round! I want you guys to send me a new band/artist you discovered this year and have grown to really like. They don't have to be a new band on the scene per say, just a band you've newly discovered this year. Get at it you dorks!

Nice you like the song! And no, I haven't heard about them, but will check them soon  :tup

GentlemanofDread: Eden’s Curse - No Holy Man

You don’t have to worry about something being inherently related to the JAESUS, I’m not that much of a dick :P The song itself reeks of 80’s flair which I have a very weak spot for, seeing this would be right up my bio dad’s alley, and if this had come out in the 80’s, he probably would have had this on repeat on the road trips we took in the past summers. A tight song, that I can definitely get behind and jam to.

8.5/10

Senecadawg2: Wayfarer - Children Of The Iron Age

Good old atmospheric black metal. This is a genre I surprisingly find my mom enjoys if I put on, because even though she’s not a huge fan of vocals like these for obvious reasons, the atmosphere of the music itself is usually super gorgeous, which really anybody can get behind. And I can get behind these guys, tight knit stuff that doesn’t really break down the gates, but definitely hits ya good and hard nonetheless. Also that final 2 minutes.

8/10

Sacul: Saviour Machine - Carnival of Souls

Sailing choruses and then some smooth guitar, which then transitions into a song with a pretty tight groove. Vocals definitely weren’t what I was expecting, but I think it’s good that it wasn’t what I was expecting, because I like these vocals better. The lack of guitar presence in what I can only assume is the chorus is unfortunate, but that sounds like more of a mix thing, other than that I really enjoy this song, I shall have to check out more from them over the weekend!

8.5/10

Zantera: At the Drive-In - Cosmonaut

This is a band I’m actually trying to get in! I have both of their albums but have only mildly listened to this one. I am now convinced I should listen a lot more. Great intensity to it, and that bass guitar shall be stuck in my head. Also of course Omar+Cedric= awesome. These guys are just incredible(along with the rest of the band of course x) ) and it’s just mind-blowing how diverse they are. Putting this album on my iPod again right fuqqin now.

9/10

Adace: The Oath - Night Child

Feedback starting a song is always a good sign, I also see a bunch of retro metal/doom metal bands in the related videos bar, aw yissssss. The riffage is tasty as fuck with this group, and that bass sounds sooooooooooo gawt damn good. Their vocalist has a pretty good voice, and drenching it in reverb and a bit of delay works so well for it. Chalk this up to another band that I will have to check out as soon as possible, I absolutely love this!

9.5/10

Onno: 4th movement of Antonín Dvoràk’s 9th Symphony

I can always appreciate classical music, I used to take breaks from listening to other music in my car and just keep my radio on the Minnesota public broadcast classical station. There’s just this exclusive beauty to classical music that’s special to itself. This piece itself is incredibly gorgeous, it swells up with emotion and falls back down into dainty playing. You might have just kickstarted a period of classical music for me Onno, it’s been awhile since the last one.

9/10

WebRaider: Exotic Animal Petting Zoo - Through The Thicket… Across Endlesse Mountains

I’ve heard of these guys through metal blogs, but never actually checked them out. I think I like what I’m hearing  some math rock thrown in with some great clean vocals. The dynamic between the harshes and cleans work so well, each one builds the other up so much. And the music, oh gawd, the music is so gorgeous. That guitar that comes in around 2:15 oh gawrsh it’s so pretty. And the drummer that dude is pretty damn good. I shall most definitely make sure I finally give this band a proper check out, because I would love to hear more of this sort of music.

9.5/10

PROGdrummer: Solution .45 - Gravitational Lensing

Melodic Death metal *windmills for days*, I could absolutely do without those clean vocals, they sound more like modern hard rock radio vocals than anything. Everything else though, fuck yeah. Also that bit after 1:20, I love when bands do things like that. Not much to say other than that. If they got a clean vocalist who fit more with the music that would be preferable, but as it stands the whole is good enough to put up with those clean vocals I suppose. The group cleans around 4:00 were cool though.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAAAAA, I LIED HERE ARE THE RESULTS RIGHT NOW.

GentlemanofDread: Pink Floyd - Careful With That Axe, Eugene

I was at a friends house one night, and another friend who was blazed out of their mind put Live At Pompeii on. So we sat talking and would look at the screen occasionally and would be like “Hm, this is some tight shit right here, I tell you h’whut”. It really is a fantastic listen though, and this song is so chill, while also making the hair on the back of my neck stand at certain moments, all in all a great song!

8.5/10

Senecadawg2: Gallowbraid - Stone of Remembrance

Vocalist has some good harshes, pretty clear enunciation etc etc, I really like the production of this track, seriously and I like the folk metal slivers that thread themselves into the song, on top of the killer black metal music. One thing I could do without was that power metal scream at 2:30 or so  but is something so minor compared to the 8 minutes and 29 other seconds of music that kick complete ass. That acoustic bit a little bit before the song reaches the 4 minute mark is so pretty with that flute combination and distorted guitars also chugging in. And then that solo in the 5 minute region, that’s some tasty shit. Great great great song dude, I seriously love how the folk elements blend so well with the rest of the song, you’re ending the roulette in a very strong fashion!

9/10

Sacul: Nils Fram - For - Peter - Toilet Brushes - More

Spacey *ha look at me, what a wise guy* synths stretch out to a simply beautiful effect, I feel like I’m just lying down in space floating, as I reach out to poke tiny little stars. After 2 minutes though the mood changes, and it now feels almost ominous, but more so a cautious, adventurous, feeling. Around 5:40 it begins to enter that floating feeling again, but it’s not as comfortable this time, but it’s just as gorgeous. Overall, it’s a song that takes many twists and turns, as 7 minutes in can tell you, where this “Tribal” feeling percussion comes in, after a while a new keyboard part comes driving in. It’s all gorgeous, and covers many, many different feelings, and I may just have to check out the rest of this album and more from this person, as I love it!

9/10

Zantera: Cult Of Luna - Dim

Cult Of Luna! I have their most recent album, but haven’t checked out anything else from them, which is silly, because I love Vertikal  The song has this playfully ominous feel to it for the intro. It’s very pretty though, and at 2:00 minutes, oi m8 I just melted in my chair. That synth sound and the instrumentation, that’s the girl I could never pick up the courage to ask, it’s just a 10/10 gal that makes my palms sweat even though they don’t ever do that. As the song evolves it continues to be gorgeous through and through. And then at 9:00 the vocals come in and the ominous little tingling I felt in the beginning rears it’s head, and I love it! I need to dig into the rest of this band’s discography, because I can’t miss out on such beautiful music!

9.5/10

Adace: Avatarium - Moonhorse

Not related to the song, but surprising they’re on Nuclear Blast, you don’t see too many Doom bands on that label as far as I’ve seen. Anywho to the music, Heavy intro that goes into acoustic guitars and a fragile female voice, singing as if she’s telling a tale, and then boom heavy lead injected brick filled sac riffage. This pattern repeats, and it’s quite interesting honestly, but instead of the same riffage, it goes into this molten, running display of radical guitars, and now the vocals come in over the riffage, and it works greatly. I don’t know if this is a band I’d listen to often, but when I would, it’d be a fine listen.

8/10

Onno: Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony no. 9, 4th Movement

I actually have this, in D minor :3 I don’t listen to it nearly often enough though, as it’s such a gorgeous display. There’s been times where I began to play the 1st movement at work and my coworkers made me change it because it certainly wasn’t fitting music for setting up a wedding banquet  Thanks for sending this though, I may just have to go back and listen through it all today :)

8.5/10

WebRaider: Amplifier - Continuum

Like you said, the music does build, and I too really dig stuff like that, when bands can make a song evolve and become this beast of a song. The vocals are pretty good too. When he says listen and the song has this little explosion of energy, that works really well, and the part that follows it sounds trippy. At 4:40, I like how the sound becomes ominous before going into a beautiful solo, and then that becomes this aggressive  churning beast that breaks out of it’s cage and just rampages, all before just going back into the original musical idea, so many changes in a short time and it all sounds so damn good  Fantastic submission, and a fantastic finale from you!

9/10

PROGdrummer: IceJJFish - On The Floor

Oh my god, dude I have nothing to say but well done. A masterful display of music crafting, and the ability of the human voice. This shall be put on display in the halls of the White House, truly a masterpiece.

2/10

Glad you liked Cult of Luna! :) I don't know if this was the part that knocked it down 0.5 from a 10, but the outro might get a bit repetitive or long drawn on its own, but in the context of the album it segues perfectly into the next track. :) Anyhow, glad you liked it!
