Title: jsem's roulette (Round 9 results are up!!!)
Post by: jsem on May 04, 2014, 03:49:45 PM
So, I'm about to start my first roulette. I have participated in a few back in the day though, so I'm no stranger to the process. I don't have any participants in advance, but I need something like 8-12 participants. If you are interested, drop a response below. First 8-12 guys to respond gets to participate.

The scoring
I will rate each song out of 10, with the lowest possible score being 0.

Also, if there is a certain section in a song that makes me eargasm, that will earn the song an extra point or two, but it won't necessarily enhance the entire song. It might be out of place, or other parts of the song may drag the total score down, but the section alone will be rewarded. (A.C.T - Useless Argument | This song has a wonderful groove breakdown, but feels a little bit out of place and the rest of the song is only OK) The reason these extra points are up for grabs are because it might be indicative of a bands ability to write some good creative stuff.

My last.fm & forbidden bands
https://www.lastfm.se/user/jsemdtf (https://www.last.fm/user/jsemdtf)

Any bands or artists with less than 50 scrobbles on my last.fm is fair game, unless I have listened to that specific song or album before enough times to have made a proper judgement. If I have only listened to it once, I may not even necessarily remember it if it didn't specifically stick to me somehow. My last.fm probably reflects my listening behavior to 90-95%.

If you happen to send me something I have already heard, I will let you know by PM and you can send something else.

Some tips for contestants
-I love nearly all branches of the jazz tree, but free jazz is very hit and miss.
-When it comes to metal I can easily get bored by it. Power metal, NWOBHM and even Thrash can get stale for me. Harsh vocals are very hit and miss. Lately I've been enjoying "djent" a lot.
-Classical rock, blues rock etc can be very enjoyable, but sometimes just fall flat
-My favorite composer of all time is Bach. I am quite fond of the Baroque era, but don't hold the Romantic era in as high of a regard (even though there are some exceptions).

My last tip would be to look through my "loved" tracks on last.fm. I may not actually love those tracks completely, but they might contain some part that was worthy of a heart on last.fm. That will give you an idea of what I really enjoy.

The structure of the roulette
The roulette will consist of 10 rounds. The first 6 rounds will have the contestants submitting one song each. After these 6 rounds, the first five contestants in terms of score will move on to the latter stages and the rest will be eliminated. The next three rounds will have the five contestants send in two songs each. For the final round, the top three contestants at the time will send me an album each. The winner of the roulette will be whoever sends the best albums, adding the scores of the two albums.

Again:
Round 1-6: One song from each participant.
Round 7-9: Two songs each from 5 participants.
Round 10: Twp album each from the top three contestants.

I'm also not a fan of being a slave to the theme of a round, so all rounds will be open. But please feel free to send me various styles of music that you happen to like.

I'll have another post announcing round one once I have gotten all the participants in. Please leave a response in this thread it you're interested in participating.

Question: concerning Bach being your favourite composer, could you list some of your favourite stuff of his? Or at least tell if you prefer his instrumental or his work for choir?

Ooooo....this sounds fun. I read you like djent. What bands have you heard in the djent genre
Periphery, TesseracT and Intervals are some top picks. But don't lock yourself into the actual djent sound. Scale The Summit, Disperse etc are excellent. There's probably a lot I haven't heard in that realm that I have to be introduced to.

Question: concerning Bach being your favourite composer, could you list some of your favourite stuff of his? Or at least tell if you prefer his instrumental or his work for choir?
His cantatas are brilliant, but require me to be in a certain state of mind to listen to them. My favorite works are the Violin Concertos, Brandenburg Concertos, his Inventions & Sinfonias and Chamber music. I am specifically fond of chamber music in general.

All right. So 5 participants so far. I'll check in on this thread tomorrow morning and see if there are enough participants to start this whole thing off.

Fixed that in the OP now, so it doesn't link to the Swedish last.fm. It's in English for me, despite the Swedish domain, so I didn't even notice that it had the .se-domain.

Yeah, about that... is there any way to actually have a look at which songs of a band you have scrobbled, when you are on this page (https://www.lastfm.de/user/jsemdtf/charts?rangetype=overall&subtype=artists)? 'Cause if I click the artist, it just takes me to the artist's page, not to the amount of scrobbles that YOU have.

*DISCLAIMER*

Quote
Feeling like I have to address this. They are still fair game. If you are persistent enough maybe I'll come to like something by then. Then again, one could send another Anathema song and if I happen to like it, it will skyrocket into first place of the bands I have to run through the discography of. You obviously can't send a song that has previously been sent though.

*END DISCLAIMER*

So here are the results of Round 1. I think you guys in general did quite well. There were no songs I disliked or anything. No songs got a lower score than 5 either, and a 5 for me is if I feel completely indifferent to the song. Below that is that I dislike something about it. Anyway, here are the writeups:

senecadawg2: Anathema – Dreaming Light (10/10)

I've heard some Anathema before and I liked some of it, but I can't recall why I didn't fully explore their discography. This song makes me want to check out their entire discography. It's an absolutely beautiful track, and even made me shed a few tears. I was touched. I almost couldn't have asked for anything better.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Now, Now – Thread (7/10)

I really enjoyed this song. Can't put my finger on why, but it's one of those songs. It's the same reason I like songs like Everlong by Foo Fighters. Simple harmonization, a simple beat and a great chorus.

Nekov: Pat Metheny - Yolanda, You Learn (6/10)

I have been meaning to get into Pat Metheny for a while, but have never gotten around to it. I'm not a huge fan of this song though. It carries a great groove, but it is instrumentally wacky and I can't really get past that. The song gathers momentum towards the end and it feels like soloing should continue for another couple of minutes, as it has really picked up steam by then. Not really a fan of the fade out that occurs here either. All in all it's an OK tune though.

Tyrias: Steven Wilson – The Raven that Refused to Sing (6.5/10)

I have heard some of PT's discography, but haven't heard SW's solo stuff. This is a very well executed atmospheric and mellow song. I like it. There's a lot of though and emotion put into this track. Even though this song isn't the best thing since sliced bread there's really no reason for me not to check out PT's extended discography as well as SW's other side project, seeing that I like some of PT's output already.

kingshmegland: Aisles – Sorrow (6.5/10)

This was a pretty decent song by a band previously unknown to me. I liked the vocals and the instrumentation, but I think the song was too long and it got too repetitive despite the abundance of dynamic changes in the song.

Scorpion: Shattered Skies – Saviours (7.5/10)

This was a very fun djenty track. It wasn't your usual syncopation and all that, this was really unique. Incorporating slap/pop techniques on the guitar by the looks of the MV. Didn't think much of intro, but when the vocals came in it all made sense. My only real pet peeve is that the instrumentation is a bit muddy at times (muddier than it has to be) but otherwise this is great.

YtseBitsySpider: David Sandborn – Run For Cover (8.5/10)

Apparently this song is written by Marcus Miller. I know of Marcus Miller have seen him live (by accident) too, haven't heard this song though. But it's what can be expected by Marcus Miller. A groove that could impregnate someone with their tubes tied. David Sanborn I've heard of but not paid much attention to, he's playing brilliantly on this track.

Ben_Jamin: David Maxim Micic – Daydreamers (9/10)

Clocking it at nearly 12 minutes this is the longest submission this round by far, but it's well worth all those minutes. It never gets boring and it feels cohesive, something that can't be said of all long tracks. Each individual part also shines, this is a fantastic track.

wolfking: Frank Gambale – High 5 (5.5/10)

Pretty standard fusion track. I know of Frank Gambale and his style, but haven't listened to much of his stuff. I'm not hugely into fusion as I am other styles of jazz though. It's hard to find fusion that properly excites me. I know FG is a brilliant guitarist, but this song just isn't the best thing ever.

Big Hath: Jaco Pastorius – Come On, Come Over (8.5/10)

Yeahhhhhhh. I know of Jaco, have listened a little but not extensively. I will have to rectify that.

adace: Malabar Front – If These Trees Could Talk (5/10)

This song is just meh. Typical post-rock in that it fails to excite me. I understand how some people can really enjoy this and just drift away, but I don't. It's not that this song is bad, I just feel pretty indifferent to it.

Total Score:
senecadawg2: 10
Ben_Jamin: 9
Big Hath : 8.5
YtseBitsySpider: 8.5
Scorpion: 7.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 7
kingshmegland: 6.5
Tyrias: 6.5
Nekov: 6
wolfking: 5.5
adace: 5.5

ROUND 2: Send me something that is intense. You are free to interpret that as you wish. Since I'll be busy this weekend and adace isn't sending his song until Sunday or so anyway, the results might not be up until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. So be patient until then.

That was not the safest choice when it comes to Pat Metheny but I really like that song. The guy has a long and varying list of records so you should still check him out.

I'm thrilled to see you enjoyed Dreaming Light! It's one of my favorite Anathema songs, and hopefully you enjoy their other stuff as well. It's great that you feel compelled to check out their whole discography, but in terms of a starting place I'd definitely recommend that album, were here because were here  :azn:

So.. Results for round 2:

Big Hath: Anathema – The Gathering of the Clouds (5.5/10)
Much less impressive than the previous Anathema song sent to me. From what I can deduce, this seems to be a track transitioning into another? If that is so, it would be nice to hear what came after, because it feels like it's taken a bit out of context on its own. In and of itself, this was kind of meh.

senecadawg2: Clint Mansell – Death is the Road to Awe (9/10)
Apparently this comes from a soundtrack to a film called The Fountain. Well, I'm going to have to see that movie pretty soon. This track convinced me. It's beautiful. The latter half of the song is really intense and sounds absolutely huge.

Nekov: Sigur Ros - Sćglópur (9.5/10)
Ok. I did not expect to be so moved by a post-rock song, but I was. Chapeau. This did not bore me like post-rock can do at times, it did the opposite. I've heard some Sigur Rós before, I might even have heard this song before. But I never was so moved by it before. I guess I'll have to try Sigur Rós again sometime soon. Maybe I'll find some more gems in their discography.

Ben_Jamin: Superior – Until The End (5/10)
Feels like a typical prog metal ballad in my opinion. It's not horrible, but I'm not ecstatic about it. It started out well, but for some reason it didn't deliver at all. Just   :\

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Dir En Grey – 冷血なりせば (Reiketsu Nariseba) (9/10)
Schaisse. How have I not explored this band earlier. This song annihilated my colon. In a good way.

kingshmegland: Pyramid Theorem – Another Day Slips By (6/10)
A well put together heavy prog song. It was OK. Not completely generic, had some redeeming qualities, but ultimately failed to excite me.

Scorpion: The Dillinger Escape Plan – 43% Burnt (7/10)
This song was absolutely insane. Not a huge fan of the vocals. Sometimes harsh vocals work, but this was a miss. The song was well constructed though, with the opening theme coming back in the end to complete the song too. That riff is so dissonant yet awesome. I have mixed feelings about this, generally favorable though.

Tyrias: Árstíđir – Shades (8.5/10)
This was a great piece. The instrumentation was on point, the entire track was just 100% solid from start to finish. The strings work so well in this song.

adace: Deafheaven – Dream House (2/10)
I think this comment on YouTube sums up the track:
Quote
This is music created from growing up in an a.d.d. society with access to thousands of different types of music at all times and ejaculating that confusion and over stimulation all over the metal. Love it.
Except I don't love this. This was pretty painful to listen to honestly. Sorry.

wolfking: Redemption -  The Suffocating Silence (6.5/10)
Pretty decent prog metal song. Pretty generic prog metal stuff. I still like it though, I like prog metal in general so..

YtseBitsySpider: Ozric Tentacles – Holohedron (5/10)
I've heard talk of this group before. IIRC doesn't JR love these guys? I can totally see why, but it's not quite up my alley. It's not by any means bad, but it doesn't excite me at all. I wouldn't put it past this group to have some tracks that would blow me away (like Shpongle), but this one doesn't.

:tup. My recommendation is for you to check Takk and Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust, those are my favorite albums from them and have several gems. And it's good to know you don't really enjoy post rock, I'll cross that from my list for next submissions.

Will send something later today.

Yeah, DEP's vocals aren't for everyone, but I'm glad you liked the music.

Happy... proggasm... let's think on this, shall we?

Oh by the way, restrictions on song length?

Like you guessed, that Anathema song definitely is more of a transition track. It's good within the context of the album, and I even like it alone, but I can understand why it doesn't have the instant appeal of a "Dreaming Light". I hope that hasn't dissuaded you from checking them out in more depth.

As for my own submission, I'm glad you enjoyed it! The movie really is beautiful- probably my second favorite movie of all time. Also, props to Nekov for the excellent Sigur Ros song. It's not the one I would have chosen, but there's really no going wrong with any of their music.

I'll send you round 3 shortly!

I guess that was a bad choice, I shouldve sent the other one. But typical prog ballad, it was released in '96, but as I said, I wanted to send the live version as that's the version I prefer and its more dynamic and just better overall than the studio

ROUND 3 RESULTS ARE INNNN

Big Hath: Mingus Big Band – Moanin (10/10)
One of the most swinging, badass, epic renditions of one of my favorite tunes ever. Hnnnng. What am I doing with my life, how have I not gone balls deep into Mingus Big Band's discography. Especially as a baritone player... this is heaven. I need to start playing like this.

senecadawg2: Thank You Scientist – A Salesman's Guide to Nonexistence (9/10)
If I were in the US, them opening for Coheed. It would be a show I could not possibly miss, judging by this track at least. It was awesome. Man, you're killing this roulette. So up my alley. Just misses out on a point for the slightly weaker second half of the song.

Nekov: Iluvatar – In the Eye (6/10)
Not a huge fan of the keys on this track, but otherwise a decent prog song. Can't say much more than that, it didn't stick to me that well. Some sections better than others too, as it's a bit long.

Ben_Jamin: Stephen Marley – Hey Baby (8/10)
Ahh yeah. Listened to a lot of reggae before I got a last.fm, hence why it's not there. Haven't listened to Stephen Marley enough though, but this was really good. Laid back, awesome.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Steam Powered Giraffe – Brass Goggles (9/10)
Instantly made me smile. Oh man, this is awesome. I hope all their tracks are this awesome.

kingshmegland: Moon Safari – Mega Moon (9/10)
When I listened through their stuff a long while ago, I felt they were a less interesting version of A.C.T. I might have to revisit their stuff, because this song was fun, quirky and awesome.

Scorpion: Transatlantic – Stranger In Your Soul (7/10)
Well. A long prog epic. This needed a few listens to sink in. I'm still not completely sure what to think about this. Certain sections were better than others, but not by any huge margins. Not 100% impressed on the cohesiveness of things. Overall pretty decent.

I have heard some Transatlantic before, but only a little. I know I liked Duel With The Devil the first time I heard it so I don't know why I haven't thoroughly checked out Transatlantic yet, I really need to do it even though this particular song wasn't perfect.

Tyrias: Guro von Germeten – Fa Fa (Come Stand Before Me) (10/10)
THANK YOU. This was awesome in so many ways. Your description of this being a chanson/sailorsong/jazz crossover was pretty spot on. Brb taking a train to Oslo tomorrow.

adace: Alcest – Autre Temps (8.5/10)
I don't know if this was such a feel-good song, but it was very rock solid nonetheless. I really enojyed the song.

wolfking: Eric Johnson – Lonely In The Night (5/10)
Eric Johnson is a familiar name, I know he's a very accomplished guitarist. This song wasn't one of the best though, it didn't do much for me. I've heard a few other songs by him and they were much more impressive.

YtseBitsySpider: Blessed By A Broken Heart – Rockin' All Night (6/10)
This is very much not prog, :lol. I can find this type of hard rock good depending on the circumstances. Chorus is weak, riffing is pretty good though. Overall decent.

Total Score:
senecadawg2: 28
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 25
Tyrias: 25
Big Hath : 24
Ben_Jamin: 22
Nekov: 21.5
Scorpion: 21.5
kingshmegland: 21.5
YtseBitsySpider: 19.5
wolfking: 17
adace: 16

I will probably send another song tomorrow.

They're not my favourite or anything, but I don't have a lot of happy, proggasmic music, and Bridge Across Forever IS a pretty cool guy album. No fan of the rest of their stuff though.

I think we are more generationally closer than you'd imagine.

I haven't listened to terrestrial radio in nearly 15 years. Satellite is on again off again.

I have tried to make it a personal mission to get better stuff played on local rock/classic rock stations though.

Round 4: Those previously unfortunate are catching back up

senecadawg2: The Contortionist  - Exoplanet (5/10)
The first part of the song was great, but eventually all the momentum was gone and it was a case of blue balls. Harsh vocals are usually hit or miss too for me, and this was a miss.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Second Person – Gone Fishing (8.5/10)
I'm pleasantly surprised by this track, it's realllllyy good. The chorus is especially good.

Nekov: Mindflowers - The Merovingian (5.5/10)
I don't know what to say about this. I should enjoy this given how it's a mix of everything I like, but it just doesn't quite work out. It's not terrible, but it doesn't do much after all. I feel like the song tries too hard to fuse the styles.

adace: Ulver – Eos (9.5/10)
A beautiful track. Floats by just like I think Eve by DT does, and I love it.

YtseBitsySpider Maxxess – Red Earth (6.5/10)
Not bad. I don't know what else to say. It wasn't mindblowing but it was decent.

Big Hath: Weather Report – Palladium (6.5/10)
The little of Weather Report I've listened to hasn't been hugely impressive, it's been decent. Just like this tune. Decent. Individually, I know all of these artists are brilliant and have done great things but this just falls flat.

kingshmegland: The Pineapple Thief – 3000 Days (7.5/10)
The best part of the song is easily the first minute or so. The rest isn't too bad. All things considered a very solid track.

Tyrias: Arcade Fire – Rococo (5/10)
Meh. That word is a very accurate representation of my feelings towards this song.

wolfking: Evergrey – Mark of the Triangle (8/10)
An extremely solid prog metal song. I really like it. And that section from about 0:30-0:44 gave me a huge progasm. (+1) All in all a very solid prog metal song.

Scorpion: Camel - Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider (8.5/10)
Yeahhhh. This was awesome. I should have checked out Camel already, feels like I'm missing out on something profound here. The song does get progressively worse though, which kind of sucks.

Ben_Jamin: Bela Fleck and The Flecktones – Something She Said (9/10)
Wonderful track really. I know of this group but haven't really listened that much. I've got to change that. This track is absolutely beautiful. A flurry of great sounds.

Total Score:
senecadawg2: 33
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 33.5
Ben_Jamin: 31
Big Hath : 30.5
Scorpion: 30
Tyrias: 30
kingshmegland: 29
Nekov: 27
YtseBitsySpider: 26
adace: 25.5
wolfking: 25

At the end of the last round the difference between the top ranked and the lowest ranked was 12 points, now it's down to 8. It's great to have gotten some fantastic submissions in. Secena disappointed a bit, and some others sent some really stunning tracks.

Round 5: Open again. I suck at trying to limit you guys.

hmm....about the score I expected for that track.
He has better stuff, he has worse.

I worry sometimes that the songs which I prefer may not be the ones you do - so I sent you a middle of the road song. Similarly with Ozric. In hopes you'll check more of their stuff and decide for yourself which is which.

I've been in enough of these to know that the points are cool and all but the winning comes from discovering new music from the submissions that you can research after the roulette is over.

Sorry guys, been busy and stuff. Results within a few days though. Also a heads up, I'll be gone for like 10 days in like a week. After that rounds should only take 3-4 days though.

No offense, but why start something when time management is obviously an issue, and you are going away for almost 2 weeks?

Post by: jsem on June 04, 2014, 06:36:24 PM
To the first question: good point. I should have thought about that. Secondly, this thing that came up got planned like 3 weeks ago. By then the roulette had already started.

I think I'll still be able to finish this within 2 months, which is what is asked of me.

Round 5: YtseBitsy propels his way upwards

Big Hath: Graham Central Station - The Jam (6.5/10)

I know of Larry Graham and his band too. I had heard this track before but it didn't really captivate me. It didn't this time either. Funky tracks can be slightly hit or miss for me, it really depends on the song.

senecadawg2: Orion – Reconstruct (7/10)

The song is good, except for the fact that I'm not a huge fan of the breakdown which is like the entire latter half of the song. The first half was excellent though, I might explore them further.

Nekov: Bill Bruford – Feels Good To Me (5.5/10)

Eh. The typical 70's fusiony sound. Never been hugely into that anyway. This song isn't that bad, but it fails to really do anything for me.

Ben_Jamin: OC ReMix #1586: Shadow of the Colossus 'Snowfall on Forbidden Lands' (4/10)

Well, I almost feel like I'm generous for giving a 4/10. This remix didn't do anything for me at all.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: The Swords – Lawless Lands (7/10)

I'm not totally a fan of the guitar sound, and not a huge fan of the vocals either. Otherwise this was rocking and I can't find fault in it. Chorus has that organ just laying there and it's awesome. The riff itself and the soloing is really good and weighs up for other poorer parts about this.

kingshmegland:  Slow Motion Reign – Big Life Simulator (7/10)

Not too bad. I really liked how the song started off, and it gave off a Big Big Train vibe too.

Scorpion: Jonas Hellborg – Solitude (9/10)

I've heard of these names before, but never really listened. Holy schaisse this is awesome. Need to make this a priority.

Tyrias: Tango With Lions – A Long Walk (5.5/10)

Not terrible, but not fantastic either. Digging the trombone at the end, but otherwise, nothing spectacular.

adace: Boards of Canada – Dayvan Cowboy (6/10)

It was good, but I thought it was going to build up to something even greater all throughout. When it didn't, I was kind of disappointed.

wolfking: Sieges Even – Tidal (7.5/10)

The chorus is really fantastic, but the rest of the song isn't as good – but not bad. It definitely fits the archetype of prog metal though, but not as heavy.

YtseBitsySpider: Anthrax – In The End (9.5/10)

Well. I don't know why I haven't paid much attention to Anthrax. I've got to change that ASAP, because this track was awesome. Exactly what you would want from a proper heavy metal song. Huge eargasm when the main verse-riff kicks in at about 1:05. +1 for that.

Total Score:
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 40.5
senecadawg2: 40
Scorpion: 39
Big Hath : 37
YtseBitsySpider: 36.5
____________________
kingshmegland: 36
Ben_Jamin: 35
Tyrias: 35.5
Nekov: 32.5
wolfking: 32.5
adace: 31.5

The line represents the current cutoff point. Looking bleak for Nekov, wolfking and adace, but you never know what might happen. Remember, after next round the bottom five are eliminated.

Round 6: I'll keep it open again. I seem to get a good variety of stuff from you anyway, I don't want to change that.

(smirk)

You should listen to that track king...it's my go to roulette winner. I'm not going to win, but I needed to make the cut.

The middle part of it for me is just so metal......and Anthrax have matured nicely in their old age.

Is that from the last album they did?  I heard 3 songs off of it and they kicked ass.  It's been a long, long time since I listened to them.

2011 Worship Music I think it was called...

The Devil You Know
In The End
The Constant

were the 3 that clicked for me. I think older anthrax suffered from some lax production gave it a very fringe punk metal sound. That 2011 offering was pretty polished. Maybe even "brickwalled" as you guys say....seemed all the levels were way up on things but it gave the music a warmer feel over their old stuff.

Round 6: Back in Town

Big Hath: Wes Montgomery – Airegin (7.5/10)

I know of Wes, but haven't listened extensively. Solid track. Not a huge fan of the tune itself, but I can't complain about anything else. Solid playing all throughout.

senecadawg2: Sigur Rós – Svefn-g-englar (10/10)

Another Sigur Rós track. Well worth it though. I guess I'll have to fully explore their discography. This convnices me.

Nekov: Subsignal – A New Reliance(8/10)

Not that bad actually. I really enjoyed this. Given that I'm generally a fan of prog, this is a great track. Wouldn't be surprised if they had some mindblowing tracks. This wasn't one of them, but it was rock solid.

Ben_Jamin: Hybrid – Finished Symphony (6/10)

This song is way too long. That's really the only fault I can find with it. It's pretty good otherwise.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Alexi Murdoch – Through The Glass (5/10)

Definitely not a fan of the vocal style here, but otherwise the song is OK.

kingshmegland:  Umphrey's McGee – Mantis (8.5/10)

Well, the song was quite long – but I liked what I heard throughout. Definitely my style of prog.

Scorpion: Leprous – Forced Entry (8.5/10)

Well, this song forced its way into my colon. I think I've listened to this album once before, or maybe not. Doesn't matter. I heard something I haven't heard before in terms of how it violated my brain, my colon and my urethra at once.

Tyrias: The National – Ada (5/10)

Eh... I didn't really like this, did nothing for me really.

adace: Empyrium – Dead Winter Ways (5/10)

Awfully and painfully slow, but I can see why this would be appealling. It starts out very well, but once the song actually kicks off – it loses me. This time, the harsh vocals didn't really click for me either.

wolfking: Scar Symmetry – Ghost Prototype I (9.5/10)

I have only listened to a little Scar Symmetry, and it was fairly recently. This song was one of those I had listened to, but I had not really remembered it, maybe I wasn't listening with my ears wide open. I should have paid more attention, because this song is a near perfect metal song.

YtseBitsySpider: Magic Elf - Scrambledeggs (9/10)
All kinds of awesome. Can't say anything else about this.

Total Score:
senecadawg2: 50
Scorpion: 47.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 45.5
YtseBitsySpider: 45.5
Big Hath : 44.5
kingshmegland: 44.5

wolfking: 42

Seneca re-established his lead, and Ytse made the cut due to two awesome submissions. Because of a tie between Big Hath and kingshmegland, I'm deciding to keep them both in the competition.

To the competitors who didn't make the cut: it was fun having you guys around, and I enjoyed some of your submssions.

Allright...

Round 7: I'll keep it open. This time, you're sending two songs each. Please send within 48 hours so we can keep the pace up. I'll send out PMs too.

Round 7: The score table tightens behind Seneca and Shadow Ninja loses ground

Big Hath:

Aftermath – Soul Secret(7.5/10)
Decent prog epic. Gives me the same vibes that Haken does, they sound kind of similar IMO. The song is consistently good, but lacks that something special which makes an epic a 10/10.

Groove Collective – Drunken Master(9/10)
Pretty typical groovy song with an great horn section. I love it.

senecadawg2:

Zelliac - Hargrove(9/10)
Brilliant. Didn't know what to expect when I put it on, and I thought it was going to be really mellow throughout as I heard the intro. When the song really kicked in though, it reached some epic heights.

Agalloch – As Embers Dress The Sky (6.5/10)
Not sure if I like this or not. Tremolo black metal style is not my cup of tea, but the female singer is brilliant. It was still definitely more than listenable.

Shadow Ninja 2.0:

U.D.O. - I Give As Good As I Get
(6/10)

Hmm. Not a fan of the vocals here, but otherwise it's decent. Instrumentation in the chorus is really good.

Pete Yorn – Lose You(7/10)
Given then way the song started out, I thought I would dislike this. I kind of liked this though, despite the fact that the vocals kind of put me off.

kingshmegland:

Echolyn – Sunday Spills(8/10)
I've heard of this band before but never listened. It was worth the listen for sure. Prog on a high level.

Demians – Sapphire(9/10)
One man band you said? This is brilliant. Rock solid. I've got to check out his stuff.

Scorpion:

God is an Astronaut - Snowfall(10/10)
Perfection. I'm speechless.

Ihsahn – Undercurrent(6/10)
I like the instrumentation mostly, but the vocals are a miss this time. The first 4 minutes are great, but the rest is just lackluster.

YtseBitsySpider:

Five Finger Death Punch – Lift Me Up(7/10)
Honestly, I'm impressed. This was pretty solid metal.

Soilwork – Night Comes Clean(9/10)
This was much better than the previous one. This is metal right up my alley. Super tight riffing, digging the vocals too. Awesome.

Total Score:
senecadawg2: 65.5
Scorpion: 63.5
YtseBitsySpider: 61.5
Big Hath : 61.5
kingshmegland: 61.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 58.5

All in all a very solid round.

Round 8: You know what to do. 2 songs yet again.

I changed the format for rd. 10 slightly. I think you guys are doing so well I want two albums from each of the top 3 contestants by then. Read the main post for the change.

Round 8: Seneca loses his lead

Big Hath:

Snarky Puppy(8.5/10)
I've heard them a bit before, and they've got their own take on fusing rock and jazz. This song is pretty chill, and what I expected when I knew I got a Snarky Puppy submission. Great stuff.

Spock's Beard - At The End Of The Day (9/10)
A really long prog song. I know of Spock's Bears, but haven't listened much. Good shit.

senecadawg2:

Gotye – Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You(8/10)
I really liked this. It was really odd, spooky and quirky – but it worked.

Kayo Dot – The Manifold Curiosity(4.5/10)
Eh, not sure about this. The song drags on for too long before anything happens, which is 5 minutes in with the soprano sax. Then the song kind of just floats on, gets really intense at the end (to the point where I don't even enjoy it). Meh.

Shadow Ninja 2.0:

Alchemist – Letter to the Future(5/10)
Eh. Not really into this. Can't really say why, I should like this.

Audioslave – Like a Stone(7.5/10)
A very good track. Really solid. Nothing particularly special, but a good track.

kingshmegland:

Darwin's Radio – Breathe It In(7.5/10)
Pretty typical neo-prog semi-long song in a way. I can't believe that is even possible to say :lol. I like it though. It's solid prog, but not more than that.

I Mother Earth - Hell & Malfunction
(5.5/10)

Hmm. Not too impressed. It's not terrible, but doesn't do much for me.

Scorpion:

Aghora – Garuda(6.5/10)
Pretty decent intrumental track. I'm not ecstatic about it, but it does its job fairly well.

Sigh – Amnesia(10/10)
Holy schaisse. I want to give this track 25/10. It's awesome in every possible way. +2 points for that awesome eargasmic sax solo too. Everything that goes on in this song is brilliant, even the high frequency noises going shifting from left to right.

YtseBitsySpider:

Atreyu - Blow(7/10)
I've heard this before. Decent track for sure.

Times of Grace - Live in Love (9/10)
Yup. This gives off a KsE-vibe for sure. And I love it. Adam D kills it as usual.

Total Score:
Scorpion: 80
Big Hath : 79
senecadawg2: 78
YtseBitsySpider: 77.5
kingshmegland: 74.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 71

Seneca's second submission was a total miss, and now it's very close for the top 3 spots. Good luck to the contestants.

Round 9: Same format. Only the top 3 will stay for the last round.

Glad to see that you liked Sigh. You should definitely give that album, In Somniphobia a try, it's probably my favourite of theirs, awesome all around.

Will send tonight, or tomorrow at the latest. I have a few ideas for this...

Sorry guise.. it's taken a while. But whatever, here we go:

Round 9: …. wtf? Seneca loses out on top 3 spot!

Big Hath:

Bill Evans – Gloria's Step(8.5/10)
How can I not have any plays on last.fm? Dunno. Been watching his stuff on YT and stuff before, and I know he's brilliant. Haven't listened extensively, but will have to after this. Amazing track.

Gru - Stellar (9/10)
”atmospheric space-djent”. Fitting description. I love every bit of this.

senecadawg2:

Ludovico Einaudi - Oltremare(8/10)
Beautiful track. Can't say anything else about it.

Journey – Of A Lifetime(7/10)
I know Journey has done some great stuff, but haven't listened too much. This is certainly not like the hits they produced. This is entirely different, but honestly not that much better. It's still good, but not my style of prog so to speak.

Shadow Ninja 2.0:

Killer Be Killed – Wings Of Feather And Wax(7.5/10)
Pretty good rocking track. Nothing special about it IMHO, but it was solid.

Devil Doll - Mr Doctor(3.5/10)
Ehhhh.... Just was not into this at all. Vocals threw me off too. Sorry about that... lol.

kingshmegland:

Druckfarben - Another Day
(8/10)

Very solid prog. A lot happened in the song even though it was only 5-6 minutes long, and I like that they didn't make this longer than it had to be too. Loving most of the ideas presented.

Anubis - Blood is Thicker than Common Sense
(9/10)

More solid prog, and this song is way more up my alley. Man this is a good track. Can't really say much else.

Scorpion:

Enslaved - Forsaken(8/10)
Trippy in many ways. Not a fan of the harsh vocals in the track, but the song progresses and drifts into something awesome. Very good track.

Novembre - Nothijngrad (9.5/10)
I really find this track enjoyable. The song reached epic heights about half-way into the song. Eargasmic heights when the heavy riff kicks in on top of the riff already there. +1 for that.

YtseBitsySpider:

Nonexist – From My Cold Dead Hands(8.5/10)
Yes! The mellow part was gold, the heavy parts were great too. The only weaker part was the opening. Overall, very well received death metal song from me.

DGM – Reason (9/10)
Holy smokes, lately you've been killing this roulette. Started out weak, but man, you're delivering. Brilliant heavy track, can't find any fault in it. Loving the Symphony X feel so hard.

Total Score:
Scorpion: 98.5
Big Hath : 96.5
YtseBitsySpider: 95
______________
senecadawg2: 93
kingshmegland: 91.5
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 84

Didn't expect this to happen, but some other people just killed it, and this is the first time out of all the rounds seneca is out of the top 3. Shit happens though.

To all contestants who are out: It was great having you around. Yes, even you Shadow, despite your lackluster last few rounds :P.

Round 10: 2 Albums from each of the top 3 guys now. I will rate them both /10, with +1's for exceptional tracks. The one with the highest score out of you three will win, resetting the points now to 0.

Good luck!

Honestly didn't see it coming, but you only lost steam now towards the end. You've done brilliantly though, some epic tracks.

Thank you so much for letting me play in this roulette.  You can check out Anubis' full album on Progstreaming.com.

I'll be following the last round to see who'll win. Thanks again!

Nice work everyone.
Two albums eh?
This might be my undoing.
I think one of them will be that DGM album for sure. There's more goodies on there. Though Russel Allen only appears on that first track I sent you.

Thank you so much for letting me play in this roulette.

Even though it's a frustrating to get the boot, this.

Can we send an album that we have previously sent a track from?

seems like if we did that, the song that was already sent should not be considered as part of the album since the sender already knows how he felt about it (meaning the album score would come from the other songs only).  My opinion, anyway.  It's jsem's roulette to run however he wants.

I didn't really think of that. But just because I really like one song off an album doesn't mean I think the album itself is that enjoyable. WDADU would get like a 5/10 score from me even though I'd rate Ytse Jam and The Killing hand 9/10 or higher.

So I guess I'd still allow for it.

I know this is the last round, and you're listening to 6 complete albums, but hopefully you can declare a winner soon so those up next can get theirs underway.

Round 10: And The Winner Is....

Big Hath:

Dave Weckl Band - Transition(8.5/10)
This is pretty much what I expected of them and hoped for Right from the get go Dave is in the pocket and the band is playing tight and with incredible musicianship. They feed off each other and at certain times it's ecstacy. Brandon Fields plays his ass off on this album, out of this world.

Best song(s): Wake Up, Group Therapy

Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech(7/10)
I like some of his work, but this just doesn't stick to me as his other work does. I applaud him for having such a diverse catalogue, but this particular album won't be as well received by me as some of his other albums. It's solid all the way through, but lacks anything that truly sticks to me and makes me want to play it over and over again.

Best song(s): Life

Scorpion:

Sigh – In Somniphobia(9.5/10)
Oh my, this album destroyed my rectum. They have so much to offer. Saxophone in metal, really avant-garde. I can totally see why someone wouldn't like this, but I can't not like this. They have the same approach to musical ideas as I do, and they make it fun, quirky and enjoyable. Just like with Diablo Swing, the quirkyness itself doesn't make the music great, it's the fact that the quirkyness is well placed inside of musical ideas.

Kamelot – The Black Halo(9/10)
Power Metal or Metal in general doesn't get much better than this. Solid all the way through. Tight rhythmic playing, great riffs and overall solid song ideas. The flow of the album should be applauded too, not just story-wise, but musically.

Best song(s): Moonlight, This Pain

YtseBitsySpider:

Anthrax – Worship Music(9/10)
One of the most solid thrash releases ever. I don't always enjoy thrash, but now I did. Some excellent tracks on here, and headbang-worthy moments.

Best song(s): The Devil You Know, In The End

DGM – In My Mind(8.5/10)
A prog metal band with Symphony X vibes. I love this. It doesn't really reach the level of SX's best stuff, but this is extremely solid. I find it hard to say much else about this. It's nothing out of the ordinary really, but it's extremely solid.

Best song(s): Reason. Void

So.... The winner is.... Scorpion!

Overall, I was expecting to be blown away more by these albums, but whatever. When I summarize the entire roulette, I got so much good stuff and I have a long list of shiet to get through now.

Thank you guys for participating!

congrats to Scorpion!

Thanks for running this roulette, jsem.  It was fun, but to be honest I was a bit lost there for a few rounds as far as what music to send.  I was surprised to make the finals.

I guess it might be easier if there's a set theme for each round too, but this is the way my roulette panned out. As a result, some people ended up blowing their loads early and ran out of steam towards the end, but whatever.

This has been great journey for me, so thanks again to all the competitors.  :tup

No roulette went on as long as Nick's.
