Title: Senecadawg's Roulette (Final Results Posted)
Post by: senecadawg2 on February 23, 2014, 12:11:24 PM
Hello DTF community! Welcome, welcome, welcome. This is my first roulette, and I hope to make the most of it. As such, I'm going to need your help. I'll warn you right off the bat that I'm pretty picky when it comes to my music. While I tend to enjoy a decent number of different genres, I'm very particular about individual bands.

Now, the structure of this roulette will be relatively simple. In other words, no card games, fantasy worlds, BDSM, etc.. I'm going to open it up for now, until I have a total of 12 participants. The first two rounds will be open tryout rounds. I'll eliminate two contestants in each round, before moving on to the final 6-8 rounds (depending on how long it's taking). After the initial bloodshed, scoring will be done on a 10 point scale, with .5 intervals. Also, AND READ THIS PART CAREFULLY: THERE WILL BE DEADLINES. If you're going to be too busy to take the 5 minutes necessary to choose a song and send it to me, within 5 days of the previous round's results, than you should probably not sign up in the first place. I hope that's not an issue, but I think 5 days is more than generous. Point deductions will be dealt if deadlines are not met, and the convicted will incur public shaming.

The Competitors:
jingle.man
LieLowTheWantedBoy
Dr. DTVT
Elite
black_floyd
Dark Castle
lonestar
Shadow Ninja
Adace
Zantera

With that out of the way, I'm going to do my best to list all of the banned bands. I'll probably forget a couple along the way, but this will have to do for now… Also, to give you a sense of my current listening patterns, I've highlighted the 10ish most-played bands/artists for the past couple months. With that being said, all of the bands are on here for a reason, and a year ago only 3 of the currently highlighted bands would have been getting any prominent rotation (I'll let you sort out which 3).

'Some Rules'
-Each contestant is allowed to send up to 2 epics throughout the roulette, which I've arbitrarily defined as longer than 12.5 minutes. HINT HINT HINT: you're going to want to make sure you save one in case there is a designated Epic Round, later.
-Once the final 8 have been selected, and we have themes, I will award extra points to one participant each round for sending the most theme appropriate song.
-I reserve the right to modify scoring retrospectively. If I hear a song a couple times, hate it and give it a 2, then grow to love if later, I'll add on a couple points. In other words, this is my roulette and I can do whateverthefuck I want to  ;D
-Once a band has been sent, it will be banned immediately. If you have a band you really want to send, but suspect that someone else may also be interested, it may be in your best interest to send it earlier in the roulette. Saving the best for last might work, but it's not guaranteed

I'll go ahead and admit something maybe not-so-great when running a roulette. I value some people's opinions on music more than others around here, because of past success I've had with they're favorite music. They're tastes just line up better with mine, and so I give their suggestions more attention.

To counterbalance this truth I'm going to wait until I have all the submissions, write them down, shake 'em up, let them sit for a day, and then listen to them. I won't look at who submitted what until I've scored all of the songs, and my poor memory will offset any bias.

That's a great idea.  I always wondered if personal bias's got in the way of any of my impressions, but couldn't figure a way to effectively disconnect the song from the participant.

From now on I'm requesting that, if you can, you send me an mp3/aac file of your song through my email. I posted my address a few posts back. It just makes it easier for me to get through everything when I can get the songs on my iPhone and take it on the go. If you don't have the file yourself then you're exempt, but please make sure the youtube quality is decent. And if it's not, try spotify.

OK.  I know in the past I had to convert to mp3 for some people, and just wanted to make sure.  The good thing is if I send you a file, it's ripped directly from the CD, not something that has been processed thousands of times.  Then again, Death Magnetic is going to sound like speakers under mud no matter how close to the source you get  :lol   :'(

Not sure how many albums I'll end up buying by the end, but at the very least I'm sure I'll get a couple dozen more on my short list for purchase.  :tup

Ah fuck it, I'll start now. It will give me an excuse to procrastinate on other work I should be doing.

I'm going to draw this out though, and post results in segments of 4. Here goes the first…

Zantera  Jane's Addiction- Three Days
This here was the longest song I received this round. I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive going in, as I've never really liked any Jane's Addiciton that I have heard. Thus, it was a very pleasant surprise when I realized that this was significantly better than what I'd heard before. Firstly, you are absolutely right: this song is a journey. And the best part is that you can sense it right away in the use of spoken word. Oh and you're also right about the base line, I enjoyed that a great amount. The guitar solo/s are also fantastic. However, I unfortunately feel that the song a little too long, and maybe a little tiresome at times. I'm also not that big a fan of the vocals, for whatever reason. Some moments stand out, and connect with me, but most of the delivery feels somewhat average. Overall though, this is a solid send. You are rewarded with 6 points.

lonestar Alek Darson- The Rind
This was, at the very least, one of the more interesting submissions this round. Musically it's a whole lot of fun, and the vocals are quite something. I'm hearing a lot of Daniel Gildenlöw, as well as an almost unnoticeable trace of Devin Townsend. I don't know if that's what he was going for, but I think it works very very well. My one complaint on this song is that at times the transitions are a little jarring. It's entertaining, there's no doubt about that, I'm just not sure I always get the jumps. A good example would be at just under 3 minutes. It basically goes from 0 to 60 in .5 seconds before stopping again 20 seconds later, and it gives me a little bit of whiplash. Still, a very fun piece of music. You are rewarded with 6.5 points.

Dark Castle Circle Takes the Square- Enter By the Narrow Gates
While lonestar's was one of the most interesting submissions, this one might have been the single most interesting submission. I felt that I was in for something special when the opening chants kicked in, although I wasn't entirely sure what it would sound like. Then it hit me… "Bring forth the light", and my immediate reaction was welp, I'm not sure this is going to end well for Dark Castle. I'm thankful to say that I was wrong, because this song grew on me more than any others this round. It's got great atmosphere, great dynamics (I absolutely love it when nearly everything drops out but the alternating male female spoken word, intermixed with the screams). I will say however, I'm not a big fan of most of the vocal sections immediately after that bit, and before Farewell Persephone. Also, this isn't music I think I'll find myself listening to most of the times. It's very mood specific, and thus a lot of times doesn't deliver the full impact. Maybe that's my fault, and not theirs, but it still affects my opinion on the song. Overall, a good start. I reward you with 6.5 points.

Shadow Ninja 2.0 The Ocean- Into the Uncanny
Upon first listen, this was my favorite of all the songs. However, it didn't age with me as well as I had hoped. It was very good in the beginning, and it's still very good. Anyhow, when the vocals made their first appearance I was immediately infected with an enormous smile. And when the first roar appeared, I was knocked off my feet. I have to say though, his harsh vocals are kind of ugly imo. I suppose that they achieve their purpose, and I enjoy them most of the time, but they're not aesthetically satisfying. Regardless, the changing dynamics throughout this song feel effortless, and the song doesn't meander unnecessarily. It's got a point, and it gets me there pretty quickly. Good song. I reward you with 7 points.

So far:

Shadow Ninja 7
Dark Castle 6.5
lonestar 6.5
Zantera 6

Post by: senecadawg2 on February 28, 2014, 07:31:49 AM
yeahh…. It's odd, because normally these things don't bother me. Somehow his delivery of the harsh vocals just rubs me the wrong way. I'd appreciate a little more Akerfeldt and Dan Swano, which don't strike me as angry when they're delivering their lines.

Sorry about that. If it makes you feel better, 6 is good.

Yes, it's on a 10 point scale, but I've decided that anything above 8 is practically unattainable. 8 is really excellent, and anything higher depends on longevity. To make this a little more clear, approximately:

3- dislike
4- not my cup of tea, although it has some redeeming qualities
5- good song, but not something that I would probably listen to given other options
6- good song that I will listen to again, and a band that I explore more in depth later
7- very good song, I will pursue a purchase on this album, and perhaps others from this band
8- couldn't have been happier with the song (given the short amount of time I've had with it)
9 & 10- reserved for the 8's that last, AKA my favorite songs of all time. 2112, ACOS, One Last Goodbye (Anathema), Our Fortress is Burning, etc., etc., etc.

Hope that clears things up. It's all relative, and yours was actually one of the best songs I got this round.

ETA: I guess I should have cleared that up before. So don't be upset when you guys get 5's (and there will be 5's, and lower too). I legitimately enjoy those songs, they just don't have a very lasting impression on me.

I'll wrap this round up tomorrow morning. But for now, everyone can go ahead and send for the next round if they want. It is another open round, after which the 4 lowest scores (combined from both rounds) will be asked to leave the house. We'll then proceed with the final 8 in 6-8 rounds, depending on how quickly or slowly it is moving.

Banned artists:
The Ocean
Circle Takes the Square
Alek Darson
Janes Addiction
Vanishing Point
League of Lights
Spiral Architect
Elliott Smith
The Magnificent
Summoning
Shostakovich

Elite The Ocean- Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe
Two songs from The Ocean this round, and overall my favorite band sent. I'll definitely be checking out this album, thanks to you two. With that being said, I was a little bit underwhelmed by this song after hearing Into the Uncanny. It's a good song, make no mistake, but I feel like it gets less done in its 9+ minutes than it could. Not the best bang for buck ratio. Part of the problem may be that I need more time to digest it, given its longer length. 10-15 listens later and I'm still not sure whether or not it's clicked. Tedious is too harsh of a word, but it does a decent job of approximating my issues with the song. Still, the instrumentation is interesting, the vocals are really good (particularly the clean), and its generally good sonically. I reward you with 6 points.

Dr. DTVT Vanishing Point- Embodiment
My initial thought on this one was that it sounded like generic progressive metal, and that's something I'm going to generally stand by. However, I tend to enjoy most generic progressive metal regardless of how generic it may be. The highlight of the song for me was the vocals. The chorus is also really catchy, which I appreciated. However, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the mixing. I couldn't help feeling that the drums felt a little overpowering in the mix. Obviously I'm no drummer, and I have no way of possibly knowing, but it is something that caught my attention. Still, it was one of a couple songs that got stuck in my head, from this round, and I look forward to checking out more of their stuff in due time. I reward you with 6 points.

Jingle.Boy League of Lights- I'm Alive
Female vocals were a nice change up; good call on that. She's got a nice voice too. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the vocal delivery. The vocal melodies just don't really do much of anything for me. And that's a shame, because I tend to like almost everything else about this song, particularly the relatively-minimalist instrumentation and the fact that it makes me bob my head like a little disco queen. Still, I ultimately worry that this will be a slightly forgettable song, which is frustrating because it seems to have all the right pieces. With that being said, I am compelled to check out more of their stuff. I reward you with 6 points.

black_floyd Spiral Architect- Insect
Wow, this is a strange one. I've practically had this one on repeat since you sent to to me, which should bode well for you. I found it to be interesting, which should also bode well for you. The way the vocals seemingly glide, and occasionally soar, over what sounds like an insect dancing, is also very intriguing. The bass work is really interesting. In fact, just about everything about this song is interesting. Still, it all feels very alien, and as a result has very little emotional resonance in me. Very interesting song, but no lasting impression. I reward you with 6 points.

And updated standings thus far:
Shadow Ninja 7
Dark Castle 6.5
lonestar 6.5
Zantera 6
Elite 6
Dr. DTVT 6
Jingle.boy 6
black_floyd 6

That makes more sense. I meant to wrap it up today, but got really busy this afternoon. I will have the final bit posted tomorrow morning. Maybe even later tonight, depending on potential social activities. Also, I don't expect I will do this every time. I just wanted to get started on it this morning but didn't have enough time to get it all out in one sitting.

Finally…

LieLowTheWantedMan  Elliott Smith- Alameda
Shortest song of the round and, frankly, one of my least favorites too. It's sitting on the line between wouldn't listen to it again if other options were available and add to my 'check out' list. Let me explain… It feels like solid background music. He's got a nice voice, but its hardly gripping. Musically its nice, better than most in fact, but still hardly gripping. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's a boring song, but it doesn't quite get me going like a lot of the other sends this round. One thing that it has going for it is that it has relatively high lows (no single aspect about this song deserves serious critique when looked at independently). Unfortunately the highs are also relatively low. It's one of my most played songs from this round, after I got the initial careful listens out of the way, because it's great study music. Not music to study, or even listen to carefully, but music to study (or do almost anything else) with. I reward you 5.5 points.

bl5150 The Magnificent- Bullets
A lot of the things that I just said about LieLow's send could be repeated here, only I like this one a little bit less. Vanishing Point felt like generic progressive metal, and this one feels like very generic AOR. Journey comes to mind, in terms of comparisons. Great vocalist, but relatively uninteresting musically. In fact, one of my favorite contemporary vocalists. Still, this is what I imagine Circus Maximus would sound like if you took away everything that makes it interesting. The guitar solo is alright, but nothing to get excited about. The lyrics are a little cheesy for my tastes. And the chorus, while very hooky, is repeated to death. Still it's a song that I consider good whilst listening to it, it's just not something I find myself drawn back to. Thus, I reward you with 5 points.

Adace Summoning- Flammifer
I wish, for your sake, that If These Trees Could Talk hadn't been on my banned artists list, so that you could have come away with higher results. This second choice didn't do much of anything for me, I'm sorry to say. In fact, apart from the flutes (don't know for sure if those were programmed), I don't have many positive things to say about this song. It really comes down to my most common issue when trying to find new black metal bands to listen to: production. Nearly all of it sounds like it was recorded using the Photo Booth app on my computer, and this does too. The drums sound programmed, the vocals sound distant, the synth work sounds fraudulent at best. I personally like really atmospheric black metal (Agalloch comes to mind, although they aren't strictly speaking black metal), and part of that atmosphere comes in the production. And that's what's holding this one back. I reward you with 4 points.

Lucien Shostakovich- Symphony No. 5, Finale
Right off the bat, you're unfortunately in last place now. No beating around the bush… this is definitely not my cup of tea. In fact, it does an excellent job of highlighting many things I dislike about classical music. It seems lacking in emotion (apart from maybe anxiety), it's mostly played too quickly for my liking, and it sounds very dated. It's also too long for its own good. Sorry, none of this is what you were hoping to hear. It took some balls to send this song, and I appreciate the risk, but I don't enjoy the music. One of the reasons I want to delay the elimination until after this next round is because I think you can do better/deserve another chance to prove your worth. Same goes for the two gentlemen above you. For now though, I punish you with 3 points.

First Round Results:
Shadow Ninja 7

Dark Castle 6.5
lonestar 6.5

Zantera 6
Elite 6
Dr. DTVT 6
Jingle.boy 6
black_floyd 6

LieLowTheWantedMan 5.5

bl5150 5
Adace 4
Lucien 3

For those of you sitting in the middle, be careful with what you send. Just one really good send and any of the bottom four could easily jump you. Taking a risk and being relatively successful likely puts you in better standing than wimping out and sending an average song that you expect I will like, given that the bottom crawlers will likely take those risks this round.

Well I achieved what I wanted , sorta..................a prog metal singer he likes and a band  that sounds a bit like one on the "do not send" list (Journey).  What I didn't predict was that Journey would be considered just generic AOR  :D

Back to the drawing board.

Sent a new one.

It's worth mentioning that not all of the bands in that list are bands that I like. Some of them I don't like, but have decided that I've listened to enough of it and want to move on. Journey is one of those (not including a couple of their earliest song, which I love).

I wanted to let as many people join who wanted to play, up to about 12. But, ultimately, it's just a lot easier to move at a reasonable pace when there are 8 or less. While I don't necessarily mind the idea of moving at a slower pace, I think that it would frustrate some of the people playing as well as those on the waiting list. So elimination it is  :-\

I've never understood the idea behind eliminating people in the roulette, but to each his own I guess.

It's more a matter of inviting more people (ie, some you may not have considered) to get the best of the best.  More than 10 people in a roulette is difficult to manage.  However, from my personal experience, I probably wouldn't have thought to reinvite Nekov (no offense buddy) if I was only going to have 10 people, but he sent me some really good stuff this time around.   I had about 15 people in mind that I wanted to participate, took another 5 or so, and then weeded it down to 11.

Or, what the dawg said (because I was ninja'd)
Title: Re: Senecadawg's Roulette (version 1.43 Result)

When I brought eliminations into roulettes (does that make me the Hitler of roulettes?  Henry VIII?), it was because I wanted to get input from lots of people - I had 32 people join my second roulette.  32 people every round would be too much, so I made some eliminations early on to narrow it down.  Some people who I would not have thought to invite did quite well, and by initially opening it up to everyone I got some new blood to participate instead of the standard circle jerks these have become with mostly the same people playing.  Not that I mind circle jerks, sometimes I just want someone new to tug on me.

That's right. Although 32 seems a bit too much for my liking, I'm glad I got at least a couple extra people to play for these first two rounds. I've discovered 4 bands that I most likely would not have otherwise heard. And although, unfortunately, Lucien likely won't survive the night I'm happy to have had his contributions.

Overall this was a better round than the first. Higher highs and higher lows, too. Unfortunately this is the end for 4 of you. Thank you for playing, and I'm sorry to see you go. In no particular order:

black_floyd Gordian Knot- Muttersprache
I didn't say so earlier, but instrumentals can be a rough patch for me, in the sense that even if I enjoy them they rarely stick and get a lot of listens in my rotation. Apart from a couple standouts, Liquid Tension Experiment comes to mind, I've often had the problem of not finding a lot of replay value. So, whether you knew it or not, this was a potentially risky send from you. Fortunately, it paid off in a big way. It's got almost everything I look for in an instrumental: beautiful (while not excessive) soloing, good pacing, just the right amount of playfulness, and interesting composition. It's also got very clearly defined sections, rather than coming out as one constant blur of wankery, and I really appreciate that. I don't know what else to say, except that this was my favorite song of the round and roulette so far. I reward you with 7.5 points.

LieLowTheWantedMan Thank You Scientist- A Salesman's Guide to Nonexistence
It hits the ground running, and I love that. It's catchy as all get out, and I love that. It's got some of the most tasteful uses of trumpets I've ever heard, and I LOVE that. This song is a winner on almost every level. My one complaint, and the only thing keeping this out of the 7+ range, is the vocalist. This is a pretty common occurrence for me, in that I enjoy the vocal melodies but don't completely enjoy the voice itself. A lot of times it will grow on me, and I sense that it already has to some degree, but as of now I'm not completely sold. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it at the moment. But that's okay, because everything else more than makes up for it, and as a result this was my second favorite submission this round. Big step up from last round (even though 1 point may not seem like that much). I reward you with 6.5 points.

Shadow Ninja Second Person- Gone Fishing
'One of these songs doesn't fit', and this is it. Firstly, I'm a big fan of her voice, the trip-hop elements, the semi-dark atmosphere, and the lyrics which I don't understand at all. Honestly, this song just makes me want to fuck something. There's something very seductive about the delivery, and its a testament to the song that I can't attribute that to one single characteristic. Because it's not just one thing, but rather the network of sound. My one complaint is that it is just a touch repetitive, and I'm not a fan of the almost-rap elements that make an appearance before the 3 minute mark. Still, another very good song from you... I reward you with 6.5 points.

Adace Mono- Follow the Map
This one truly is beautiful. It's one of the shorter submissions, and it's also more on the minimalist side of things. Despite both of those things, this is the most emotive song I have received thus far. I will say that I don't feel it's entirely original, which may be a slight problem in terms of long term appreciation, but it's still very effective. I'm not entirely sure whether or not I'm supposed to feel sad or inspired, and I like that ambiguity. It's also very dramatic, which I enjoy. In terms of the music itself, I really enjoy the simple guitar work at the front end of the song. It seems to bend, stretch and reach, all at the same time. I reward you with 6.5 points.

jingle.boy Star One- Perfect Survivor
Arjen sure does like his science fiction. It's evident in every single one of his albums I've taken the time to listen to. Now what are the repercussions of such a statement? Cheese. That's right, lots of cheese. Being a vegan, I'm not a big fan of cheese. However, I am a big fan of Alien, and this song serves a purpose that I can't ignore: tasteful cheese. Sure, it's quirky that he's decided to basically summarize the entire film in a very literal way. In fact, it's almost laughable. Yet I can't complain when I'm compelled to sing along and tap my feet like an epileptic spider. Highlights are the chorus and guitar solo. I will say though, I don't like the audio quality on this one. Not sure if it's because of youtube, or if that's just the way it was produced. Anyhow, I enjoyed it quite a bit and will be checking out more. I reward you with 6.5 points.

Dr. DTVT Dimmu Borgir- Progenies of the Great Apocalypse
Heaviest song of the round, as well as one of the more interesting ones. Also, one of the more difficult ones for me to rate properly, because I feel that it does some things really well while also doing some things that don't tickle my fancy in any way whatsoever. Lets start with the bad. The guttural vocals, you know the ones. They're the first ones to make an appearance, and I'd rather they hadn't. Growls are one thing, black metal screeching is another thing, but this thing… I just don't get. Their just kind of ugly, in my opinion, and that's the just of it. Sounds like someone caught Satan on recording, put it in a blender, and then messed around with it using auto tune. Now, with that out of the way, I do think that this song does a lot of things really well too. It is both symphonic and cinematic, and it pulls it off without any cringe-inducing effects; I REALLY appreciate that. It has really good pacing, some of the vocals are actually quite nice, and the keyboard work is very effective. Finally, my girlfriend claimed to enjoy this song, and that's got to mean something. I reward you with the strongest 6 of the round.

Dark Castle Anciients- Faith and Oath
Another solid submission from you, DC. This is also one of the heavier songs submitted this round, as was the case last time. I'm not sure this one has me quite as interested, as I find it a little more on the safe side, but that's okay. The guitar riffing is very effective, the vocals are both powerful and persuasive, and the song manages to flow very well despite its heaviness (rather than clunking about). My only complaint is that the first 3 minutes or so feel very repetitive. Once the guitar solo enters things change for the better and the rest of the song satisfies me in a way that the first half can't. Overall, good song. Will be checking out more from this band! I reward you with 6 points.

Elite Serenity- All Lights Reversed
I initially enjoyed this one a lot, but now that the novelty of it has worn off a bit it's settled in as a solid middle-of-the-pack song. Firstly, these are the kind of vocals that I can get behind. They're semi-operatic, with a nice balance of power and melody. Like Doc's submission, this one is also pretty darn symphonic. I will say I don't think this band pulls it off quite as well as Dimmu Borgir, but that's quite alright. I love how it sort of eases into the first short and sweet guitar solo, as if it's not entirely sure that's what it wants to do. Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass, I don't know. Regardless, this was a good song from a genre that I don't typically get into. Thanks for introducing me, I will definitely try to make my acquaintance with more of Serenity's work. I reward you with 6 points.

Lucien Pendragon- The Freak Show
Pendragon is one of those bands that I wasn't quite decided on when I made up my list. I have a couple of their albums, but I haven't listened to them enough to say that I'm fully satisfied or dissatisfied, and I am very open to exploring their stuff a little more in depth. This song is off of one of their albums that I don't own, so that was nice. Overall, I did enjoy the song. It's good progressive rock, as far as I can tell. Still, I'm not sure there's too much that elevates this particular song above that genre, which was a little disappointing for me. In other words, this song (and other songs I've heard front the band) does a good job of capturing the essence of the genre, but I'm not sure it necessarily stands above it in any way. Now, with that being said, the intro is absolutely beautiful. If I was rating these songs on intro alone you would be sitting at the top of the pile. Unfortunately I tend to start losing interest after the first couple minutes, about the same time as when the vocals enter. And that's odd, because I do like his voice. I also found myself intrigued by the lyrics, which was nice. Ultimately, this one is not going to save you from my distaste of Shostakovich and I'm sorry about that, because you have rekindled my interest in Pendragon. Thank you. I reward you with 6 points.

bl5150 Conception- Retrospect
You and Lucien were in a similar boat this round, having to make up a lot of ground. Rather than keep in you suspense I'll go ahead and say I'm sorry but this didn't quite make up that ground. I was happy with the song, for a number of reasons. Soaring vocals? check! Catchy with just a hint of cerebral? check! Guitar solo that makes me want to smile? check! Ultimately, however, it's only about 3 minutes. It feels more like a transition song than anything else, and that's a bit of a letdown. It's done a great job of piquing my interest on the rest of the album, so thank you for that. And I really am sorry to have to do this, but this is going to be the end of the show for you. Conception is on my 'check-out' list, and for that I reward you with 6 points.

lonestar 81db- Manicomium
It's a good thing you performed so well in the first round, because this particular song didn't do a whole lot for me. While only 7:25, in a round of shorter songs this was the longest submission, and it definitely showed. I really like the bit starting at around the 3 minute mark... A LOT. When it takes the time to slow down and breathe I can really get into it. The guitar solo is also a real treat. However, the first 3 minutes of the song are verging on frustrating, as well as the last minute. I'm going to blame the vocals, because that's the major difference I've noticed. When he goes for the more aggressive approach it rubs me the wrong way. Honestly I would have been much happier if the first 3 and last 1 minute were spliced off. Because those middle three minutes do have me very interested. I reward you with 5.5 points.

zantera Amplifier- The Emperor
As I'm sure you've noticed by now, you're at the bottom of the list. I noticed it pretty quickly too, after I felt comfortable enough to start ranking the songs. And I felt terrible about it. Truth be told, I want to keep you around in this roulette. I earlier mentioned that I have a certain bias for a few posters here on DTF when it comes to music suggestions, and you're one of them. So yes, I did try to think about how I could keep you around. Maybe fiddle with someone else's score, or artificially boost this one. But when it comes down to it, I have to be honest. I do not like this song. It feels longer than it is, I find the vocals to be uninteresting, the instruments clamor away very steadily, but they don't do anything for me. All the "yeah"s "ay"s or whatever they are throw me off. I get what you are talking about the hypnotic riff, but I think that it's more likely to put me to sleep. As for the other riff, I sense far too much repetition. Maybe it's just space rock in general that I don't get, I don't know. It does remind me a bit of Oceansize (which I have to thank you for introducing me to), which is a good thing. Unfortunately it's only comparable to Oceansize in sound. Because overall it sounds like a more boring, meandering, and diluted version of that aforementioned Manchester band. For all of the above, I punish you with 4.5 points. Thank you very much for playing, and introducing me to Jane's Addiction.

Say, chef ... Now that I beat you in a Roulette round, how's about my punishment is over?

Now that I've "qualified", I can be a little less conservative.

Note that I had the balls to not be conservative in the second round.  Then again it is warmer in S. Carolina so mine aren't all shriveled up.

Yes I did note that, and I commend you for your balls.

A question, for all of the remaining 8! Scoring on this 10 point scale has been difficult for me, and I have a feeling the rankings are going to remain very tight the entire time if I continue this way. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd like feedback on a possible alteration. What I propose is that from here on out I simply rank all of the songs, and then give 1-8 points to each person depending on where they land. For example, best song gets 8, next best gets 7, and so on. Simple enough? Issues with this scoring system? I, for one, worry about having to rank songs that may end up being very different. It's rough trying to compare  Dimmu Borgir with a beautiful classical song. Still, an idea to consider. I'm open to suggestions!

The song was a bit of a chance, glad it was enough to get me through... Phew...
Title: Re: Senecadawg's Roulette (Round 3 Theme)
Post by: senecadawg2 on March 05, 2014, 08:03:38 PM
Might as well get the theme posted:

Lyrics
First theme is pretty simple. Send me an all-time favorite song, in terms of lyrics. I understand that this might be a little tough, and a lot of the submissions will likely not be your actual all-time favorite lyrical pieces, given that they may be banned, but you guys will have to make do. Don't forget that the scoring will still take into account everything, and a song with good lyrics but shit music will likely not score well. However, I will award 1 bonus point to the song with the lyrics I enjoy the most, regardless of my thoughts on the other components. Point is, it's all about finding a balance, but do keep the lyrics in mind when choosing. It's also worth considering that the delivery of those lyrics may affect scoring considerably (Ex- I'm not a big fan of rap).
I also recognize that lyricism is a completely subjective thing and that without knowing my preferences this isn't going to work all that well for any of us. So with that in mind, as well as the little narcissist in me that likes to be the center of attention, I'm going to share some of my favorite lyrics. Some of you will surely have heard some of them, and some of you may not have. Either way, I hope that it will provide a glimpse into the kind of lyrics I enjoy the most…

Kayo Dot- Pitcher of Summer
Quote
One morning, before the leaves began changing
I caught a piece of summer and poured it into a pitcher;

This I placed in the cellar on a shelf collecting dust .
Autumn, then winter, rose up from the sea, and my
Garden was a garden filled with unbroken snow.

No flower strained its face to the ice giants' whisper,
No life coloured the vision of a newborn Spring babe.
My cellar-water dripping into a pail

And I lifted my piece of summer
Like a piece of memory or a dream

Like these, caught on film
And carried it to the garden floes,
The wind turning drifting stars to madness.

Poured forth gracefully, this ctheric tincture
Lifts winter's coat-of-arms with coaxing aromas and electricity.
Used with vigilance, a Pitcher of Summer stirs a memory into swooning,
And bravely, the flowers of the past will stretch their limbs into the sky
While snow falls quietly all around.

Agalloch- In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
Quote
Through vast valleys I wonder
To the highest peaks
On pathways through a wild forgotten landscape
In search of God, in spite of man
'til the lost forsaken endless. . .
This is where I choose to tread

Fall. . .so shall we fall into the nihil?
The nothingness that we feel in the arms of the pale
In the shadow of the grim companion who walks with us

Here is the landscape
Here is the sun
Here in the balance of the earth
Where is the god?
Has he fallen and abandoned us?

As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
The fire in my heart is forged across the land

Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God. . .
Then God is not dead

I walked down to a river and sat in reflection of what had to be done
An offering of crimson flowed into the water below
A wound of spirit from which it floated and faded away

. . .like every hope I've ever had. . .
. . .like every dream I've ever known. . .
It washed away in a tide of longing, a longing for a better world
From my will, my throat, to the river, and into the sea. . .
. . .wash away. . .
. . .fade away. . .

Here is the landscape
Here is the sun
Here at the edge of the earth
Where is the god?
Has he fallen to ruin?

As I'm stalked by the shadow of death's hand
My heathen pride is scarred across the land

Anathema- Hindsight
Quote
Intangible. Eternal. Without beginning nor end.
The nameless, formless energy that permeates all living things.
That sweeps through nature like a ripple in an ocean,
Sending cascades of timeless wonder through the air,
On the song of a bird, the freshness of the morning air.
A clear calling for our inner nature to awaken beyond our every day lives, and fears.
Love is timeless, love is purity.
It is the lightless light, the rays of the sunrise dancing on the surface of the sea.
Love is you, and love is me.
It is the deepest knowing,
The serenity of being, the laughter of the earth,
The limitless breath of the wind, the wonder of potential,
The power of thought, the gift of life, the highest vibration,
The most profound awareness... the knower.
Life. Love. Infinite. within you. Now. Always.
For it is in love's gentle embrace that we come to know the space between us.
A feeling deep within that not all is what it seems
That we bear witness to a magic as deep as our own,
To a summernight horizon that whispers 'welcome' to your soul.
And in those fleeting, trembling moments that we share between the worlds,
It is enough for us to know that in each other we must care,
For alive and not alone are we the children of the world,
Here to witness time and the unfolding miracle of the soul.
There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer.
There is no disease that enough love cannot heal,
No door that enough love will not open,
No gulf that enough love will not bridge,
And no war that enough love will not throw down.
It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble,
How hopeless the outcome, how muddled the tangle,
How great the mistake.
A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
And if you could love enough,
You would be the happiest and most powerful person in the world.

David Gray- Ain't No Love
Quote
Maybe that it would do me good
If I believed there were a god
Cut in the starry firmament
But as it is that's just a lie
And I'm here eating up the boredom
On an island of cement
Give me your ecstasy I'll feel it
Open window and I'll steal it
Baby like it's heaven sent

This ain't no love that's guiding me

Some days i'm bursting at the seams
With all my half remembered dreams
And then it shoots me down again
I feel the dampness as it creeps
I hear you coughing in your sleep
Beneath a broken window pane
Tomorrow girl i'll buy you chips
A lollipop to stain your lips
And it'll all be right as rain

This ain't no love that's guiding me
This ain't no love that's guiding me

No it ain't no love guiding me
No it ain't no love guiding me
No it ain't no love guiding me

This ain't no love that's guiding me
This ain't no love that's guiding me

On winter trees the fruit of rain
Is hanging trembling in the branches
Like a thousand diamond buds
And waiting there in every pause
That old familiar fear that claws you
Tells you nothing ain't no good
Then pulling back you see it all
Down here so laughable and small
Hardly a quiver in the dirt

This ain't no love that's guiding me

David Gray- Birds Without Wings
Quote
Wishing that something would happen
A change in this place,
'cos I'm tearing off the fancy wrapping
Find an empty package

Take for a while
Your trumpet from your lip
Loosen your hold, loosen your grip
On your old ways
That have fallen out of step
In a changing time
Hoist a new flag
Hoist a new flag

Angry sun burn down
Judging us all
Guilty of neglect and disrespect
And thinking small

And death by boredom
And death by greed
If we can't stop taking
More than we need

But across the fractured landscape
I find the same things
Tired ideas
Birds without wings

Birds without wings
Birds without wings

And these are just thoughts
On lack-lustre times
I've no interest
In excuses you can find

Like you've had a hard day
Now you've too tired to care
Now you're too tired to care
You've had a hard day

Well across the fractured landscape
I see the same things
Tired ideas broken values
Many with the notion
That to share is to lose
A hollow people bound by a lack
Of imagination and too much looking back Without the courage
To give a new thing a chance
Grounded by this ignorance

(and the cat comes)
We're just,

Birds without wings
Birds without wings
Birds without wings

Tool- Lateralus
Quote
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more
and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out.
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going...

I hope that helps, and I look forward to getting your submissions!

I said in the beginning that there would be strictly defined deadlines. Thankfully that hasn't been a problem until now, and I do plan on making an issue of it moving forward. However, I'll give Rich a pass on this round given that my list was originally misleading and that I myself was gone for the past 4 days anyways. With that being said, here's hoping it comes soon!

No one ever responded to this, but unless anyone has serious issues I'm going to go ahead and move forward with it.

:iagree:

My only suggestion would be to reset the scoring though, so that the existing results don't skew the new system.

I was thinking the same thing, per resetting the scoring. Although, I do think it would be fair to reward those who have performed the best in these opening two rounds. Maybe I'll use them as a one-time-only tiebreaker if I ever have significant trouble ranking in a given round. For example, if I can't decide on ranking between submissions from b_f and Elite I'll give the edge to b_f once, since he's earned a slight cushion.

I've had some time to digest everything, and I feel good about these rankings. I've kept you guys waiting long enough for the results on this round, so I'll keep the write-ups nice and short. HERE WE GO!

1. Dr. DTVT Kevin Gilbert- Song For a Dead Friend
What can I possibly say about this song, except  :'(
Okay… I'll try harder. This song is, at once, both captivating and poignant. The piano melody is is haunting, the vocals are appropriate, and the emotion couldn't possibly come across as any more authentic. A large part of that emotion is derived from the lyrics, which are both simple and thought provoking. The whole book, paragraph, word, etc. parallel is the highlight in the lyrics! I noticed that you also sent this for obfuscation's roulette, and scored a 10/10. While I'm only ranking here, I will say that you would have scored the maximum here as well. Best song of the roulette, thus far. THANK YOU!

2. Shadow Ninja Red House Painters- Katy Song
Before I heard the Doc's submission, I was convinced that this one would end up on top. Similar to his choice, this one also carries a more morose tone. While I think the lyrics in Kevin Gilbert's song are more effective, this one is also quite nice. My one complaint would be that it comes across as a little whiny at times ('without you is all I amount to'). Still, you are right about the delivery here: very evocative! This song also wins the title for most peaceful submission. It's the kind of song I find myself putting on repeat before I fall asleep at night. It's a little repetitive at times, and it drags on a touch at the end, but those are very minor flaws in an otherwise very interesting song. I will definitely be checking out more from this group.

3. jingle.boy Triumph- Magic Power
Since the Rush comparison seems like a natural one to make, I'll start there. Being a relatively big Rush fan, I was excited to hear how this one compared. While Geddy Lee has a peculiar voice it's really grown on me, and I probably prefer his to this particular Canadian vocalist. The guitar and drum work are both good on this one as well, but I'd obviously need to listen to a lot more Triumph to feel more comfortable comparing them to Rush. Thankfully, you've piqued my interest enough with this one to get me to put 'em on the list. I take it this same album would be the best starting place? As far as lyrics go, I really enjoyed these, and can definitely relate given that music is my primary mode of escape when things are getting rough in my life (albeit not a frequent problem).

4. lonestar Fish- Crucifix Corner
So I mentioned yesterday that I would be using the scores from the first two rounds as one-time tiebreakers moving forward, and that's what got you landed at 4, because I honestly couldn't pick between this and jingle.boy's submission. Firstly, I'm a big fan of Fish's work with Marillion, particularly Clutching at Straws, so I had high hopes for this song. On the lyrics, I have slightly mixed feelings. I appreciate the lyrics here, insofar as they do a good job of showcasing Fish's talent for story telling. With that being said, I'm not a big fan of the historical approach. It's just personal preference, but I don't care much for battlefield scenes, and that takes away a bit from this one I think. Still, an overall intriguing song that I enjoyed quite a bit.

5. black_floyd Tasmin Archer- Sleeping Satellite
Firstly, I have a really hard time imagining you jamming out to this tune  :lol
With that out of the way, this is actually a really nice one. Not something I would typically listen to, and not something I'm sure I will be going out of my way to listen to in the future, but a song I find myself enjoying quite a bit when I've made the tiny effort to put it on. The lyrics are nice, though I'd be lying if I said they struck me too much. The highlight of the song for me is definitely the little keyboard solo. Other than that I don't have too much to say. A nice, middle of the pack, song for this round.

6. LieLowTheWantedMan Bright Eyes- Old Soul Song (For the New World Order)
This one was definitely the strangest one for me this round, in the sense that I wanted to like it a lot more than I could and I suspect that it has a lot of really good things going for it. Somehow, though, it just doesn't quite add up the right way for me. The lyrics are nice, but I'm not sure I 'get' them. Everything else about the song is fine, but nothing too spectacular. It seems like pretty run of the mill indie rock, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's not necessarily a good thing either.

7. Elite David Bowie- Life on Mars?
Obviously a name I've heard before, and an artist I've been interested in checking out in the past just based on reputation alone. With that in mind, thank you for sharing. Interestingly enough, I find it interesting enough to maybe check out some more Bowie. And that truly is odd, because I don't like this song too much. It's just too weird for me in most places. Not necessarily weird in its arrangement, or even in the lyrics (though they are odd), but just in his voice. I can't help thinking that there is, in fact, life on Mars, and it's David Bowie.

8. Dark Castle Rivers of Nihil- Rain Eater
Right off the bat, I'm not sure how I feel about technical death metal. Looking specifically at this song, I have a few issues. While the riffing is interesting, I don't like the relative absence of nice melody. The guitar solo is an exception that stands out. The vocals are a little too much for me, particularly when they begin to leave the growl range and venture into something else, and especially when they are layered on top of each other. Overall, I worry that this song isn't going to give me much more than a headache. Sorry if that's too harsh, but it's the best I got. WELP, that's not entirely true…. I do actually have one nice thing to say. The LYRICS. Oh man, THE LYRICS. Just my cup of tea! You get an extra point for sending the best lyrics for this round. Just wish the rest of the song lived up to them, for me.

Quote
Knowledge through growth,
My veins grow out into the Gaian essence which feeds all life.
Grow into the essence which feeds all life.
Isolation, paralysis: the state in which I spend eternity interned. Eternity flows.
Time moves slowly, work to emerge, fulfill my purpose within the natural world.
Within this temple of dirt.
But time is no more, where this seed is sewn.
The flesh no longer part of me: I am alive.

I knew RJ would be sending something from Fish, or Fish-era Marillion.  That was a given.  I also know he won't mind coming 2nd fiddle to his #3 song of all time (iirc).  As for where to start with Triumph... Allied Forces is as good a place as any.  It's probably their magnum opus.

Acoustic... Guess I'll be listening to my "Ain't Got No Rhythm" playlist tomorrow.

I had a lot of trouble ranking songs this round, but this is the best I've got…

1. Dark Castle The Tinder Box- To the Road
Here's the exception to my difficulty in ranking the songs. At first, I was very unsure about this song. It's got a sort of bluegrass feel to it, that I don't particularly enjoy… normally. It definitely sounds like music that would come from South Dakota, and not typically make the journey into my listening rotation. Thankfully, it did, and it will stay there for a little while. For most of the round I had it sitting at third or second, but it grew on me a considerable amount and thankfully has more going on in it than the other top contenders. Singer has a great voice that couldn't fit the music better, the banjo works really well, and the mid-song change in pace works really well. I can't wait to check out more from these guys, and hopefully get a full album soon.  :tup

2. jingle.boy Evergrey- Madness Caught Another Victim
I guess I can understand how this fella's voice might be a bit polarizing, but I couldn't possibly imagine coming up on the other side of that spectrum. I don't know what to say about it… range? check! power? check! emotion? check! just the right amount of rawness? check check check and check! If I was ranking vocalists alone, this one would probably be the number one of the entire roulette thus far. As for the acoustic guitar work, it's nice but nothing too spectacular. Thankfully, it fits the song well, and that's all that really matters. My only issue with this song is that I'm not sure how well it stands alone. It definitely sounds like a transition piece, and I think it would deliver more effectively within the context of the full album. Speaking of which, that other song was also incredible, and I will absolutely be getting the rest of the album. Unfortunately it wasn't quite what I had in mind for the acoustic round, so I had to go with this one. Still, excellent 3 minutes of music here.

------------------This is where it became a lot more difficult to rank. All of these are good songs, but nothing that made me gasp----------------

3. LieLowTheWantedMan Belle and Sebastian- Expectations
At first I thought there wasn't much to hear in this one. The voice is pleasant, but also seems to drone a bit on the verses. I do appreciate the little vocal melody that comes at the rear of the chorus. Also like the horn-instrument (is that a trumpet? I dunno, I'm ignorant when it comes to that family). The strings are also a nice complement to the rest of the song. Another highlight is the lyrics, not overly complicated but effective. Overall I'd classify this song as pleasant and relaxing background music. Nothing gripping, but it does serve a purpose.

4. Elite Ben Folds Five- One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Another double submission this round, this times for the Ben Folds Five, with this song being my favorite of the two. The Good: it's playful and moves along quickly enough. The Bad: those lyrics… I get that he doesn't take himself too seriously, and that's alright, but it backfires here quite a bit. bleh…. The Ugly: his voice is uninteresting to me, verging on bland. There you go, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I did forget the excellent though: the piano. Very, very good job there. Love every bit of that piano! Just wish the rest of the song had lived up to that piano work.

5. Dr. DTVT Ben Folds Five- Song for the Dumped
Song for a dead friend was much more to my liking, as it dealt with a really sad experience in an appropriately sad manner. Not to say that being dumped is anywhere near as painful as losing a close friend to suicide, but it is the comparison that comes to mind when trying to write about this song. I mentioned it briefly above on Elite's submission, but the silly lyrics detract from this song a little bit more IMO. With that being said, the piano work is, once again, both excellent on the ears and the primary highlight of the song.

6. black_floyd Days of the New- Whimsical
First the questionable vocals… a bit too grungy for my tastes. Reminds me of Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, and that's not a good thing. They're much better outside the verses, I think, but it's still enough to grind on my ears a little bit. Now with that out of the way, I do think this song does some things well. I think it's well-paced, well-produced (I guess that's not saying too much when you've just got a voice and a guitar, but worth mentioning nonetheless), interesting lyrically, and got a nice little guitar solo near the end. An enjoyable listen, but probably not something I'll be rushing back to.

7. Shadow Ninja Gypsy Kings- Bamboleo
Not what I was expecting from this round, but interesting nonetheless. It hurts to put it so low on the list, because it does a lot of things well. It's catchy and fun, got a nice splash of flamenco, and nice vocals. The guitar is really nice too. Unfortunately, it's way too repetitive. Despite being one of the shorter songs this round, it drags on unnecessarily long due to incessant repetition. The actual 'Bamboleo' sounds a lot less fun after it's been repeated 20 times. Also, not a fan of the clapping bit; it's just not my thing.

8. lonestar Tesla- Modern Day Cowboy (Unplugged)
What a shame… I want to like this song more, I really do. And I do like bits of it (looking at that guitar solo, in particular). Yet, it's still my least favorite of this batch, and it's because of what feels like an unnecessary problem. The production on this live album is terrible. It's a relatively common issue I have with live recordings, as I like 'em pretty well-polished. And this is definitely not well-polished on that front. The audience is too damn loud. It wouldn't be so bad if they just shut the fuck up, but they don't. It ruins the first couple minutes for me. As for the actual music, seems aight. Not a fan of the 'bang bang, shoot 'em up'' bit, but the rest is nice. Are these guys criminally underrated? Maybe… I'll check out some of their studio work to see what I think. But this song, alone, definitely didn't do the trick for me.

Take that how you will, but keep in mind that aggressive doesn't have to mean harsh vocals. And as a point of reference, Tool's Ticks and Leeches and Aenima epitomize my tastes in regard to aggressive music.

Midweek is here, so here are your results as promised. I unfortunately have very little time to give you decent explanations for what I liked or disliked, so I'll just keep it simple. I enjoyed ALL of these songs, to some degree, and the top 3 or 4 will definitely be checked out more in-depth once I've got this roulette wrapped up.

1. lonestar Destrage- Destroy Create Transform Sublimate
Very fun song, and aggressive in the sense that it jumps all over the place with great vigor while still maintaining a seemingly strong focus. And that outro is absolutely stellar. Thank you

2. black_floyd Byzantine- Ancestry of the Antichrist
Great riffs, great vocals, excellent guitar solo, nice melodies, and just the right amount of aggression. Also really like that it doesn't get stuck at any point. Great pacing, with an effective breather at just the right moment. All around very good song. Thank you

3. Elite Firewind- Into the Fire
This is what power metal is all about, for me. It's fast, energetic, fun, and has great soaring vocals. Not much more to say about this one. I enjoyed it a lot, and look forward to checking out more by Firewind. Thanks

4. jingle.boy Frameshift- Human Grain Pt 1: Absence of Empathy
Here's one that I imagine may sound better within the context of the album. It's good nonetheless, but it does feel like an interesting opener and that really leaves me wanting more. Still, interesting choice that I look forward to checking out more in the future. Thanks

5. Dr. DTVT Dethklok- Laser Cannon Deth Sentence
This was a fun one for me, though I'm still not sure I understand the concept behind Dethklok (I'd only ever heard the name before, and didn't realize it was some sort of fantasy band). My only complaint would be that it sounds like the kind of music I might find in an overly aggressive video game, and that's nothing I enjoy too much.

6. Shadow Ninja Dillinger Escape Plan- Panasonic Youth
No doubt about it, this song is incredibly aggressive. It reminds me of Converge, which can be a good thing, when I'm incredibly angry. Unfortunately, the rest of the time, when I'm not so pissed off with the world, it doesn't work quite as well.

7. LieLowTheWantedMan Dillinger Escape Plan- I Lost My Bet
The only reason this one landed lower on the rankings is because I used Shadow Ninja's one-time advantage from the first 2 rounds after I wiped the slate clean. Anyhow, everything I said there ^^^ still stands for this one.

8. Dark Castle Slutcum & Gather
You're all over the place man. You seem to consistently send me songs that are either my favorite or least favorite in their respective rounds. Not sure what to say about this one, other than that while it certainly fulfills the theme requirement it doesn't get me too excited. Not dynamic enough, I guess… I'm sure you'll do better next round.

I'm also awarding a few extra half-points to people who submitted songs that have grown on me a significant amount since their submission.

Standings:
jingle.boy 18
Dr. DTVT 16.5 (for Dimmu Borgir, would have been a great one for this round)
black_floyd 14
lonestar 14
Elite 13
Shadow Ninja 12
Dark Castle 11.5 (Circle Takes the Square. Looking back, this is one of the best submissions of the whole show)
LieLowTheWantedMan 11.5 (Thank You Scientist, thank you LieLow)

Ah okay, what the hell. I'll do it for you, LieLow.

I'm going to preface this by saying that this was, by far, my favorite round of the roulette thus far. I enjoyed every song quite a bit, and the top 5/6 are all spectacular in their own way. As a result, I'm going to screw the normal scoring and do something a little different with the rankings I've decided on. HERE WE GO!

Tie at the top:
Dr. Strangelove Big Big Train- The Lovers
Big Big Train is a band that I've had sitting on my list for a while, but haven't ever really checked out. Definitely not this song, so fair game. With that being said, it's not entirely fair to the rest of the contestants, because this song is so damn good. The music glides, bounces, soars, grooves, and does everything else I could hope for in a progressive rock salad. Adding to that, the vocals fit perfectly, the keyboard work is astonishing, and the lyrics are very intriguing. Not much more for me to say. Reminds me of old progressive rock music that has somehow been sent through a time vortex and then delivered to me from the future.

jingle.tits Nightwish- Ghost Love Score
This one just makes me smile uncontrollably. Symphonic metal is something I tend to stay away from normally, as I often find the 'symphonic' half of that to be a silly cheese fest. With that being said, I think that operatic female vocals work much better in the context of this music than anything else I've ever heard from the sub genre. Speaking of vocals, I do think I prefer the newer singer, though that may just because I got a good look at her in the live video, which I thought was an overall better production than the studio version. Regardless, both appeal to me a great deal. As much as I love the first half, the final four and a half minutes take things to another level. And you're right, she is a looker!

The next level:
Elite The Fall of Troy- Quarter Past
Fear not, this one did work! I'll admit, I was a bit apprehensive about the vocals when they first made their appearance. Then I listened a few more seconds, got to the chorus, and realized that I couldn't care less. You've successfully sent one of the most catchy songs of the roulette, and the one that I listened to the most throughout the round (for that I'll toss you an extra half a point). Still, even though I kept getting it stuck in my head, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the two up there ^^^.  Not sure why, to be honest. It is a little raw, which might have something to do with it, but that's also something that turned me on to it. Ah well… Great song regardless.

LieLowTheWantedMan
I'm not going to dwell on the details. Suffice it to say that I was almost compelled to cry, several times, while listening to this song. I know… reading that and seeing where you landed in the rankings must feel pretty underwhelming. Sorry about that, I just need a little more time to process what I'm listening to. Like you mentioned, the guitar is fantastic. The lyrics connected with me on a very personal level a couple nights back, and I realize now that's because you sent me the best love song of the round. Surprising, given that it's all about losing of love. I guess it just got me thinking, perhaps love never hits as hard as in the moments when it feels like you're losing your grip. I don't know what the hell I'm saying, to be honest. But thank you anyways. I'm very grateful.

The next level:
black_floyd Stone Temple Pilots- Still Remember
I wasn't very excited about the song after the first listen. Wasn't too excited about it the second time either. Third time I enjoyed it more. Now, after about a dozen, I feel like I can safely say I enjoy this song quite a bit. Perhaps a touch too grungy for me, if I'm being honest, but still a nice listen. Also a little repetitive, but I don't think that takes away from the song one bit. A little short, too, but I don't think it would work if it was much longer. Not much more for ya…   :D

bone star Dream the Electric Sleep- To Love Is To Leave
I feel bad having this one land so low on the rankings, because I really did enjoy it. First couple minutes are fantastic. But for some reason, I can't shake the feeling that it never really gets off the ground. At least, not as high as I would have expected given the 8 minute length. Also, while the chorus is really nice, it kind of just flows right in at the same pace as everything else. That's how I would describe the song in one word, if I had to. Flowing. It just kind of flows along very peacefully. The guitar solo is really nice. Unfortunately it doesn't really ever push the envelope into greatness. Even with about 3 minutes left, when they start to mix it up a bit more, it continues to plod along at the same pace. I'm comfortable saying that there is nothing bad about this song. It's all good. Very good in some parts. I just feel like it leaves a a lot to be desired.

The rest…
Shadow Ninja Entwine- Until the End
I like one of the two vocalists, and dislike the other one. Unfortunately that kind of ruins half the song for me. I'll give you a hint, it's the man. It's also a bit lodestar's submission, in that I'm not sure it really goes anywhere, even given it's almost 7 minute runtime. It's not too late for you to get back in the race, I believe in you. You have sent some of the most fantastic songs over the course of the roulette, and I have faith that you're not done yet. This one just wasn't one of them, for me.

Dark Castle Unknown Hinson- Polly Urethane
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol  :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin I'm sorry, but I don't like this song. But the lyrics were fantastic, and I thank you for that.

Standings:
jingle.boy 18+8=26
Dr. DTVT 16.5+8=24.5
Elite 13+7.5=20.5
black_floyd 14+6=20
lonestar 14+6=20
LieLowTheWantedMan 11.5+8=19.5
Shadow Ninja 12+5=17
Dark Castle 11.5 +4=15.5

I realize it looks like Chad and Mason might be getting ahead of you all, but all it takes is one round for them to slip up and its anyone's game. I'll post a theme for the next round tomorrow morning after I've slept on it a bit.

Next round…

Send me a song that BLOWS

I love me some woodwind instruments, when used effectively. I'm thinking flutes, clarinets, saxophones, and maybe even bagpipes (though be careful with the bags, that's a bit riskier). For inspiration, if you're having trouble, look towards King Crimson, solo Steven Wilson, Kayo Dot, and Ulver.

And please get it to me before Wednesday, preferably before the weekend is through.

Tell me about it.  This is a pretty narrowing theme.  14,000 songs in my library, and I can think of about 1/2 a dozen with horns/winds.  There'd be a lot more if Bruce Springsteen wasn't on the banned list.

This could take some time, but I will send before the end of the weekend, as I'm traveling for work this week, flying out tomorrow night.

Title: Re: Senecadawg's Roulette (RESULTS and THEME)
Post by: senecadawg2 on April 05, 2014, 08:23:52 AM
Yes you can.

Also, I didn't realize this would be such a difficult theme.i figure there are a lot of modern progressive rock bands that use wind instruments, and that I haven't heard. Maybe I'm overestimating that. Let me know if you guys absolutely can't come up with anything, and I'll do a quick change up
Title: Re: Senecadawg's Roulette (RESULTS and THEME)

I think you are overestimating it. Certainly a lot more that samply symphonic/strings.  No need to change (imo) ... I've found a handful of possibilities.  It just took a while.

Now to decide.

OK, this question falls under the "things I never thought I'd ask" category...

How about bagpipes or accordians? While not technically grouped with the horn instruments, they are air powered.

Edit: Nevermind, found a flute song. Damn, I kinda wanted to send the accordion song too....

I'm out of the country for a week starting next Sunday morning. I can send you another round before that, but during all of next week, I won't be able to send anything. Just letting you know.

Couple more rounds is good with me.  I too am traveling a bit during the week, but so long as you get the theme's announced by the beginning of a weekend, I'm good to get a track to ya.

I'm good for as many rounds as you want. If I start getting bored, I'll just start sending only songs by the animatronic house band at Chuck E. Cheese and labeling them with various pseudonyms like I do in every other roulette.

Good to hear!

I should have the results posted by tomorrow morning. However, for the sake of those of you who may be headed away soon, I'm going to go ahead and release the next round's theme.

ATMOSPHERE
Take that however you will... I figured I'd keep it pretty vague so as to not limit potential sends. A sort of backlash against the strictness of the previous round.

Great

Here are results for the round that blows:

Dark Castle Him- The Way the Trees Are
First three minutes or so and I have very little idea as to where this one is going. It seems to drift, lulling me into a catatonic state. It's not from boredom, but rather relaxation. The use wind instruments is perfect! Very breathy, which fits in will with the tone of the piece, and the kind of airy vocals (sound like they're being sung by a ghost). I'm not going to say too much more. This is a fantastically relaxing song and it makes me feel like I'm floating invisibly 10 feet above the ground, watching the people go by.

black_floyd Psychotic Waltz- I Remember
A close second place for you, this round. And it really was close, because this song is excellent. Excellent in the vocals department, delivering with authority but without strain. Also really enjoy the guitar work, throughout, a lot of really nice little runs. And the flutes… perfect fit! I especially enjoy it when they pick up right before the 3 minute mark. This song has the feeling of a steady march, moving towards inevitable death. I enjoy the lyrics, and the music is excellent.

lonestar Jethro Tull- Witches Promise
I have been meaning to listen to Jethro Tull for a long time. I have heard Aqualung, a little bit, but this was new for me. Anyhow, this was exactly what the doctor (not DTVT) ordered! Classic progressive rock with excellent use of wind instruments. Those wind instruments are far from my favorite thing about this song, though, and that's a testament to how strong all the other components are. What really stands out to me is the incredibly hooky little vocal melodies, 'foo ooo oo oo ooh oh ooool', etc.

jingle.boy Damian Wilson- Commune
Once again, we find you right underneath RJ. Firstly, Damian Wilson is one of my favorite vocalists around today (Daddy Fucking Loves You  :heart), so good on you for introducing me to this one. The music, however, is not at all what I was expecting. It's not bad, per say, but I'm also not sure its the best fit for his vocal style. It's just a little uncomfortably poppy, and that's so far from what I've come to expect from DW. With all that being said, it's still a fun song and catchy as all get out.

Elite Focus- Hocus Pocus
First thing that stood out to me was that this is a fantastic guitar song. Next was that it was a fantastically strange yodeling song. The former had me really excited, and the latter had me contorting my face to try to find out if I liked it. I've decided that I do. It's one part experimental, one part catchy, and ten parts playful. My issue with this song is less to do with the yodeling, but rather with the sinking feeling in my gut that says it hasn't really gone anywhere. The song runs around like a maniac, no doubt having a lot of fun, and that's great for a little while. Ultimately, however, it strikes me as being directionless, and that leaves a lot to be desired.

DocTorVT Peter Gabriel- Sledgehammer
Here's another very poppy one. And you're right, it's not bad. It's easily the most catchy song from this round, and I appreciate that. As a result it got a lot of the repeat-listening treatment. What I found out when I broke that repetition, however, was that I didn't necessarily feel drawn back to the song for its music. PG has a great voice, and it's easily the greatest selling point on this song. Everything else is good, but not great, as far as I can tell. I'm not a big fan of pop music, however, when it's all said and done. Even when it's good, like this one, it's unlikely to keep my interest enough to draw me back for more.

LieLowTheWantedMan System of a Down- Peephole
You're right, I have heard a song (or maybe two) by SoaD. I believe it was Lonely Day, and I used to enjoy that one quite a bit. Maybe it's just that my tastes have changed, but this one isn't nearly as appealing to me. It's got some nice things going on, but nothing to get me thinking or feeling. I guess it might be trying to evoke anger/irritation, but that's not really something I'm into right now. I'll take sadness any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Speaking of which, I'm going to toss an extra point your way right now for the American Football track you sent last round. I've been listening more, and now gotten the full album, and there's no doubt in my mind that you deserved more than you got.

Shadow Ninja Shining- I Won't Forget
Sorry pal, but I don't 'get' this one. At all. It reminds me a little bit of a more toned down version of The Dillinger Escape Plan, by which I mean slower and less aggressive. The thing about aggressive though, for me, is that it often doesn't work as well when there's no contrast through which I might be able to make the transition. On the whole this song lacks the appropriate amount of dynamics to keep my interest.

I knew someone would send Jethro Tull this round, I'm just surprised it wasn't me!  :lol  It was on the tip of my mouse to click send on Living in the Past.

Totally get what you're saying about Damian Wilson - his solo stuff is a complete 180 from the other bands/projects he fronts.  It does take some getting used to.

Great choice by Elite... excellent tune.

Once again, we find you right underneath RJ.

Until you go to the rankings.  :neverusethis:

Before El Doctor posts that silly picture from Spaceballs, I'm going to share the results from this round. It was another great batch of songs and probably my second favorite round so far, behind the Love songs. Here we go!

Elite Penguin Cafe Orchestra- The sound of someone you love who's going away and it doesn't matter
We have a winner! Best atmosphere of any song I received. Perhaps the most striking thing about this song is that it insists on taking its time, and manages to make that work. It moves along at a very comfortable pace, but never feels tedious or boring in the slightest. Also curious is that I don't find myself paying full attention to the music itself. It's the kind of song that lulls me into a peaceful stupor, and when it's done I find myself surprised that 12 minutes have passed. It just kind of enters me and stays there, but never intrudes on anything else. Also love the use of strings, and really enjoy the playful transition section that appears at around the 8 minute mark. Thanks for hitting the spot!

lonestar I.Q.- Road of Bones
We have another winner! Yes, that's right, there's a tie at the top. This one achieves its atmosphere in a different fashion than the above Penguin Cafe, instead utilizing excellent production, beautiful keys, ethereal strings, and haunting vocals. This, too, is largely a peaceful experience for me. This one does, however, pick up the pace a little bit more, and at just the right time. This is excellent pacing. EXCELLENT pacing. 2.5 minutes is about the perfect amount of time for the intro, before the bass kicks in. Another 45 seconds later and the fascinating little xylophone (or whatever that percussive instrument is) kicks in, to be repeated throughout the song at all the right times. This song is a great 8 minute experience with a very clear direction. It is precisely this kind of direction that I felt was lacking in your earlier submission from Dream the Electric Sleep. I felt that that one meandered a bit. This one, however, is a steady crescendo executed beautifully.  :tup

jingle.boy Queen- The Show Must Go On
I'll admit, this one felt the least atmospheric of all the submissions this round. Of course, that's my own opinion, and I understand atmosphere in my own way. I did, however, leave it vague for this very reason, and I'm very grateful that I got a good taste of your version of atmosphere. Because at the end of the day, atmosphere aside, I really enjoyed this song. Queen is one of those monster bands that I've always been a little too intimidated by to dive into, and never really known where to begin. Obviously, they haven't completely flown under my radar, and I can't imagine I've listened to Bohemian Rhapsody any less than 20 times (which is a lot, considering not one of those times involved me actively seeking it out). Anyways, I'm truly curious now, and I want to know what you consider the most apt starting place.

Dr. DTVT Kevin Moore- Wednesday the Sky
There's no denying the atmosphere teeming in this one! I'm trying to find the perfect adjective to describe this song, and I'm having a little bit of trouble. Maybe transient is most appropriate, as it feels much shorter than its 4:45 runtime. The first 3 minutes are gone in the blink of an eye, and then it's over before I've opened that eye back up. I don't know why that is, maybe you have some answers for me(?) As for the music itself, theres a lot to like. The keyboard melody is really nice and dreamy, the spoken word bits are very effective in establishing the mood, the vocals literally float above the song, and all the other sound effects do a lovely job of filling in the spaces.

Dark Castle Isis- Ghost Key
It hurts to put this song in the bottom half. It's pleasant, interesting, peaceful, and definitely has a great atmosphere. While a bit repetitive at times, I really enjoy the guitar work. When I think about why this one has landed in the bottom half I can only conclude that it's because of the sludge-metal style vocals. That sort of drawn out scream, typical in sludge metal, has always been a bit of a turn-off for me. It feels a little too forced and melodramatic, I think. Now, with that being said, I don't think I've ever felt those vocals to be more appropriate then when listening to this song. Whicih suggests that Isis has got it down, with execution better than any other band I've ever heard. Unfortunately that doesn't suddenly make me very fond of the music. It's good, but not great.

black_floyd Ozric Tentacles- Plowm
This reminds me a bit of the Spiral Architect song you sent me earlier, Insect. Not musically, as they're obviously very different, but in my reaction to it. It goes a bit like this: Oh hey, this is cool. It's also quite impressive. Wow, these guys display fantastic technical proficiency with their instruments. Hmm… I still don't really feel anything, and that's a damn shame. Why not? In the case of this particular song, there's a lot to like. It's fun and it seems to transcend genre (or at least, any single genre that I can name), incorporating elements of progressive rock, jazz fusion, and spacey electronic shit. Still, something is missing for me. Maybe there's just a little too much happening in this song, and that's made it more difficult for me to digest in such a short amount of time. I honestly don't know. I want to love this song, but I'm hitting a wall.

Shadow Ninja ShamRain- To Leave
I've listened to this one on repeat for a while now, and I'm having trouble coming up with anything to say about it, and that's because I have found it to be quite forgettable. A large part of that is due to the vocalist. I don't think he's bad, per say, just a little boring. The vocal melodies themselves are somewhat dull, I think, and his delivery of those melodies feels deadpan. Deadpan delivery=deadpan response from me, unfortunately. Not a bad song, by any stretch of the imagination, but not much for me to hold on to either.

LieLowTheWantedMan  Slint- Breadcrumb Trail
As soon as this one hit the ground I had relatively high hopes for it, based on the split-second first impression I got from the harmonics and spoken word. Then, at around the minute thirty mark, things picked up in the song. Simultaneously, I started enjoying the song a lot less. What is that sound? I guess it's the guitar, but it sounds more like pain. Or like a saw scraping against metal to produce a high-pitched razor squeak. And the vocals don't feel sung as much as spoken loudly. You're right, the guitar does carry a very eerie vibe, I just don't like that vibe. Sorry   :-[

Also, I've been posting that pic because it seems funny that people are posting just to say they will post results / next batch of albums shortly.  It just seems silly, so I am posting an appropriately silly picture.

Ah no, I got the meaning of the picture, and I agree that posting to update people on future posts is a bit silly.

As for the points. With a tie at the top, Elite and Lonestar each got 8 points. 3rd place got the same thing that 3rd place normally gets, so 6. Elite got an extra one point for the song with my favorite atmosphere. I know I haven't been consistent in handing out bonus points for the most theme-appropriate songs, but I have tried to get that in at least a couple times. I've only really thought about that extra point when my regular rankings were significantly different than how I would rank them based on theme.

I'm all over this like a cougar on a wounded chicken.

As for where to start with Queen, I actually don't have much of their discog.  A few greatest hits packages, and Live Killers.  A Night at the Opera is mandatory of course, and I adore Innuendo (their last).  Sheer Heart Attack is one that everyone should also have in their library.  After those, The Game is probably another that should be high on your list.

LieLowTheWantedMan Galaxie 500- Blue Thunder
This is such a peaceful piece of music! I definitely hear some shoegaze elements, and I love that! At some parts it reminds me a bit of My Bloody Valentine, which is only a good thing. I will say though, it feels a little more stripped down then MBV, which I also think is a good thing. Not sure how to describe it, other than that it has a lot of breathing space, and I really appreciate that. Also love how it has a very clear build-up, but that it takes its time to do so. I love songs that build steadily like that, and go out on a high note. I'm very much looking forward to checking out more from Galaxie 500… where would you suggest I start in terms of albums?

Elite Magic Pie- Endless Ocean
I can see why this band has a history of serving you well in roulettes. Particularly for this round, this is an almost-perfect fit. It's short and sweet, all while avoiding the trap of being overly simplistic and repetitive. Musically, I have no complaints at all. Also it's refreshing to have a short ballad on the more upbeat side of things. Too often I listen to shorter tracks that do one of three things, 1) only serve as a transition piece, and consequently don't stand alone all that well, or 2) do stand alone, but gravitate more to the simple side of things and consequently leave me wanting more, or 3) tries a little too hard to be emotionally charged, and just comes across as melodramatic. Thankfully, this song doesn't do any of those things. It's the perfect length, it's interesting enough (on its own merits), and it carries a very optimistic sound to it. Great send, I'll be checking out more.

Dr. DTVT Tiles- Tear Water Tea
Somehow this song feels familiar, and I don't know why. I've obviously listened to it a few times in the past week, but that's not it. It has a lot of familiar qualities at play, but it still comes together in a seemingly original way. The vocalist reminds me of the singer for Swedish power metal band Dream Evil, and that's really strange. They were the first metal band I ever heard much of, so in that sense 'Tear Water Tea' is conjuring up a lot of pleasant memories from my past. The strings are perfectly employed, and the acoustic guitar does exactly what it needs to do. I actually just looked them up and found that they started out as a Rush cover band? I'm having a little bit of trouble imagining this vocalist performing Rush music, but sounds interesting nonetheless. I'll be listening to more Tiles, for sure.

jingle.boy Hardline- In This Moment
As much as I enjoy short ballads more generally, my absolute favorites have always been those with a strong piano presence. You can understand, then, why I was so thrilled upon hearing this song. The strings are subtle but still present, as I think they should be. The singer has a fantastic voice, and I look forward to checking out the rest of Hardline's music. With all that being said, this one is landing a little bit lower in the rankings then I would have liked. It does exactly what it needs to do, and I couldn't ask for more. At the end of the day though, it's a little less interesting then the top 3. Consequently- a little less replay value. Regardless, I definitely feel compelled to check out their other stuff now, so thank you.

black_floyd Alice in Chains- Whale & Wasp
A nice little instrumental here! I'm a big fan of the lead guitar's sound in this one. At first I thought it was dark, sinister, and foreboding. But as the song progressed that darkness became warmth (around the 1:20 mark). I'm also a big fan of the use of strings, which are very effective despite their minimal appearance. This one would have been a great send for the atmospheric round, but it works here too!

shadow ninja Tom Waits- Downtown Train
I've definitely heard the name, but never checked out Tom Waits until now. The most striking thing about this song is his voice. It's so incredibly heavy. Not a vocal style that I typically enjoy all that much, I don't think, but it seems to work well in this song.

lonestar Karnya- Fallen Angel
Overall, I enjoyed this song a decent amount, even though it's not necessarily something I was thinking about for a ballad. The guitar work is enjoyable, and it has a very clear musical direction. Vocalist sounds good, but he kind of felt very run of the mill foreign progressive metal frontman. One pretty large complaint though, that does keep me away, is the voice acting halfway through the song. I listen to plenty of concept albums which utilize terrible voice acting (see Seventh Wonder's Mercy Falls), so it's definitely not a deal breaker. It's just the kind of thing that needs to be taken in context, and when it isn't it detracts from the song's ability to stand alone. It also just doesn't sound like a real conversation…

Dark Castle Trapped- we all have hooks for hands
This one kind of reminded me of a far less interesting version of the Tinder Box song you sent earlier. Whereas that one was, and remains, one of my favorite songs from the entire roulette, this one is one of my least favorites. There's something odd going on with the production, makes it sound like a scratched disc. At first I thought it was my headphones, but it does the same thing on my speakers as well, and the rest of the songs don't. Musically, it's simple and not my cup of tea. I don't dislike the singers voice, but it seems like every line in the song has the exact same delivery, which only adds to the monotony.

Glad you liked it so much. :D I'd start with On Fire, it's my favourite and IMO is the best example of their style.

Oh man, this is gonna take a long time to judge.  You have minimum 90 minutes of music to listen to, unless a couple of bozos send a 30 minute song.

Think I know what's on tap.  Will send tomorrow once I know for sure.

Sorry for the slight delay here at the end, I had finals. I know this has been a long roulette, and I thank you guys for having the patience to stick it out with me. I tried to keep it moving at a decent pace, and I think that we did a fine job of that for the most part. Even still, 10 rounds with this many people is a lot to get through, so THANK YOU! Next time I do this I'm going to keep it a bit shorter, but I have no regrets on this one! I discovered a ton of music thanks to you folks, regardless of your scores, and I couldn't be happier.

Moving on to business, this has been a great round. Here are the results! I'm not ranking them, because that is impossible. You all sent fantastic songs and I refuse to rank them

Instead, in the order that I listened to them:

Dr. DTVT Ice Age- Perpetual Child
Epic, epic, EPIC! Ten minutes and thirty seconds of pure epic. The sound is huge, the singing is so powah!, and the solos are super duper impressive. The keyboards cut through the air in a way that demands attention, rather than get lost in the sound as is far too frequently the case with progressive metal. This is the shortest song I received this round, but that doesn't mean much of anything. Because if we're going purely by a bang/buck ratio, this song is the most epic! I really don't have much else to say about this one; it's incredibly strong and consistent throughout and I love it. THANK YOU!

Dark Castle HARK- Clear Light Of…
Your submissions have always diverged a bit from the rest of the crowd, and that's why it's been such a joy having you participate. For the most part, it's been hit or miss (sadly, more misses than I would have liked), but when you hit you land me flat on my ass. This song is no different, and let me tell you- it definitely qualifies as a hit. It took me a little bit of time, I'll admit, and I suspect that it's only going to grow more, but for now it measures up as an excellent song. As I've come to expect from you, this is an especially heavy and aggressive song! At the same time, it seems to lean more towards the playful side of things, as opposed to ultra-serious and/or angry. In that sense,  and putting aside the language barrier, it reminds me a little bit of Kvelertak. The vocals, while admittedly one-dimensional, are perfect for this song. I don't know much about drumming, but that's also really solid and keeps the song moving along really well. The guitar solo is fantastic. It's soooo good! And the riffing! The song is obviously built around that riffing, and it's an incredibly sturdy foundation. It's gyrating against my eardrums in the most sensational way. THANK YOU!

jingle.boy Affector- Harmageddon
I am not a Christian. In fact, I've grown up altogether opposed to the institutionalization of religion. So when I saw this one and heard the lyrics, my first thought was poor jingle.boy- he's screwed. I gave it a listen anyways, and tried to keep a very open mind, because that's only fair. I gave it another listen, after that, because it was excellent. I gave it another listen, and another (this went on for a couple hours :lol). I can listen to it now without having to ignore the lyrics, because they're actually not bad at all. Not something I'm normally into, but not nearly as much of a turnoff as I would have expected (given my past experiences with Christian rock/metal). Musically, I am very impressed. I'm an aspiring piano player, and have been playing for about 12 years, so I always appreciate good keyboard work. This does not disappoint in that regard! And that last guitar solo, it's the perfect blend of technical prowess and surging emotion. The song also has great dynamics, with breathers at all the right moments. Consequently, it doesn't buckle under its own weight, while still feeling incredibly epic. Not the most epic song of the round, but certainly up there. You've done a really good job introducing me to new music, and this one might take the cake. THANK YOU!

lonestar Maestrick- Lake of Emotion
Above the 20 minute mark, and from a band I've never heard of! It does a number of things really well, and there are some things that I'm not quite as fond of. The interplay between the male and female vocals is really beautiful. The way they're blended in with the rest of the instrumentation is also really beautiful. The music and the vocals do a really good job of mirroring each other throughout the song, I think. The keyboard really sticks out to me, as it plays a very strong and effective role throughout the song. Those are all good things, or more accurately REALLY good things, about this song. There are a few moments that really shine out above the rest. A couple examples: around the 7 minute mark, the guitar work at around the 11 minute mark and following keyboard bit as well. Not a big fan of what follows that though, at around the 12:30 mark. It's a little witchy, the way she delivers that one line (I imagine you know which one I'm talking about). In all honesty though, I'm being a bit nitpicky. It's a great song, and I really appreciate you sharing it with me. The most touching moment comes around the 15 minute mark, with the vocalists duo reminding me a little bit of Beyond the Bridge (love, love, LOVE their album). So yeah… THANK YOU!

shadow ninja Devil Doll- The Girl Who Was… Death
AAND, the longest song of the roulette (obviously). Coming in at about 40 minutes, it's difficult to know where to begin. Maybe with some adjectives that come to mind… Insane. Demented. Ridiculous. Beautiful. Terrifying. Wacky. Experimental.  Sad. It's a journey, and those are all stops along the way. I will say, I'm not entirely sure it deserves to be called a single song. Conceptually, it feels more like an album, comprised of smaller tracks stuck together, created by a relatively pretentious musician. There may have been drugs involved, I really don't know. Of course, while it may feel a touch pretentious in regards to its structure and presentation, all the pieces are there and they are all working for me. Most of the vocals are almost laughable, but I keep coming back for more! I can't say why for sure, they're just so interesting. The strings are superb, and the atmosphere the induce are out of this world. This is excellent, you really have gone out on a bang. THANK YOU!

Elite Transatlantic- Duel With the Devil
I doubt anyone is going to be upset with me going ahead and saying that this was my favorite song of the round, and one of the best of the roulette. More likely, y'all are going to be upset with me for not having heard it before, and not having Transatlantic on my banned list. For the record, I have heard a few pieces, and do own Kaleidoscope. I wanted more, but was always a little too intimidated to know where I ought to dig my teeth in. Hence their absence from my list... Maybe some of you just assumed that it would be there, and didn't even check. I was expecting to get a song from them at some point, but got pretty worried as we approached the end. Thankfully, Elite delivered. And looking at the survivor thread now, I can see that he delivered what many consider to be the best (or at least, least least favorite-what a mouthful) Transatlantic song of all. What to say? It's long, it's epic, it's impressive, it has an interesting progression, its got mind numbingly good instrumental sections. Most importantly, especially given its length, is that this song has a number of clearly defined movements that are at once unique and cohesive when stuck together. I will never be able to do this song justice in a little paragraph, so I'm going to stop trying right now. Point is, I like it a lot. THANK YOU!

black_floyd Symphony X- Through the Looking Glass
Sweet! Along with Transatlantic, this is another one of those bands that I've heard about so often, listened a bit to, but always strayed away from. When I listen to new music I get a bit obsessed, and I need a lot of motivation to dive headfirst into an entirely new artist with a deep discography. I guess this isn't THAT deep of a discography, but it's still enough to scare me off for a bit. As you know, though, I have listened to The Divine Wings of Tragedy, and that's an excellent one. I think I may also agree with you that it may be the better track. Still, this one is also superb. Michael Romeo has some excellent solos and the keyboardist (not sure who he is) also does a great job. The highlight for me, though, is definitely Russell Allen. I've always loved his voice, particularly in the Allen-Lande project, so that came as no surprise. He's packing an incredible set of pipes! THANK YOU! So now that you've got my attention, where should I start? The Divine Wings of Tragedy? Twilight in Olympus? V?

LieLowTheWantedMan Swans- The Sound
You sly rascal you- once again sending me something very unique yet shockingly familiar. I can taste a touch of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and I love that taste so much. You, quite clearly, excel in sending me dreamy music, and this is the dreamiest of them all. And yes, it most definitely is epic. Not in the same way that Transatlantic is, or Ice Age, but in an equally astonishing fashion. It builds and builds and builds, until the waves start crashing down on me. Waves upon waves upon waves. Crucial to that process is the production, and I love the way this song is produced. It has an almost aquatic feel, which reminds me of the water portion of Thrice's Alchemy Index, but also conjures images of a desert with gusts of dry wind blowing in my face. Speaking sonically, 'enveloping' comes to mind. It's also drones quite a bit, which could have very easily gone wrong, but nonetheless works really well in this context. Speaking of which, within the context of this song, you can find me on the inside. THANK YOU!

Here ya go, Nelly:

1. The Divine Wings of Tragedy
2. Twilight in Olympus
3. The Damnation Game
4. V: The New Mythology Suite ORRRRRRRRRR their self-titled debut
6. The Odyssey
7. Paradise Lost or Iconoclast

This isn't my ranking for what I consider irrefutably best-to-worst. It's my fave, TDWOT, followed by two other ones which will likely go over pretty well with you. Next, we have a fork in the road. V:TNMS is not only the last of what a sizeable portion of the old school fans consider the good era but also a graceful transition into the latter metal-tinged era. I put the s/t debut as a tie with V because it has at least four good songs on it (Raging Season, Masquerade, Absinthe and Rue, and A Lesson Before Dying) and if you listen to too much of their other shit first, you'll likely end up not liking it just like most of their fan base. The Odyssey doesn't do much for me outside of Inferno (first track on it), Awakenings, and the title track (fucking legendary...almost as good as TDWOT) but it's a very popular album so I see no reason why you won't dig it. PL and Iconoclast suck shit.

So basically, I ranked 'em so that you'll get their best shit early on and have the best opportunity to like as much of their discography as possible.

Me this morning:

And then ....

This is way too funny... I considered an Ice Age song, as well as S-X, as well as Duel With The Devil.  Great minds think alike.  Proud to have bested this group.  You ran a great roulette man.  5 days to get through 10 epic songs is about as good as it gets.

Gonna miss this one.

And Josh... really surprised you could put S-X's s-t ahead of the Odyssey.  What you got against that album?  I can understand PL and IC being at the bottom... they're more straight up metal (though not terrible - just a totally different direction from V and The Odyssey.

The Odyssey is just hot and cold for me. Wicked sucks, Accolade II isn't even in the original's ball park for me, and the other 3 unmentioned tracks are no better than the worst tracks from any album before it perhaps with the exception of the s/t. The s/t on the other hand may be rough around the edges but MJR's energy on it is unparalleled and there really might only be one track on it I consider weak (Shades of Grey) and even that's grown on me over the years.

But also, I clearly said my order wasn't solely a best-to-worst ranking but a combo of that plus a way to make sure he ends up liking as much of their discog as possible which is why I wanted him to hear the s/t before he'd heard too much of the rest of their shit.

Fair enough... but clarity needs to be given that TDWOT (song) and The Odyssey (song) are #1 and #2 in their catalog.  There's no disputing that.  Personally, I put The Odyssey at the top of the list, but I won't argue anyone putting TDWOT at the top.

Add ALL of the albums from the last round. THANK YOU ALL!

Spotify and Grooveshark will be your best friends for the upcoming months methinks.  As it relates to Star One, I can't recommend their 2nd album - Victims of the Modern Age - enough.  I think I enjoy it even more than Space Metal.  Glad you're giving Triumph a go.   :tup

I think I mentioned in my PM that it took me over a year to fully digest, but now it's probably top 10 all time for me. As you guessed, GY!BE is super influenced by them. You can especially hear it in their use of sampled talking.

Yeah I definitely heard it in that song. And for the record, your top 10 is full of stellar albums; I've always enjoyed going through your lists when trying to find new music. Just off the top of my head, Kayo Dot/Maudlin of the Well, My Bloody Valentine, Brand New, and GY!BE are all groups that I can personally thank you [as well as a couple other posters here on DTF] for introducing me to, and they make up some of my favorite albums of all time now.

Cool! :) Glad you like so much of my stuff. Hope you dig Swans too. And if Soundtracks for the Blind doesn't hit right away they have a wide array of different albums/sounds to help acquaint yourself more.
