tigers are awesome. Got to see a live one up close today at the Dallas Zoo.You should check out the OKC Zoo if you get a chance; they have excellent "big cat" displays. I lived in Dallas for a bit and was actually a tad underwhelmed by their zoo, especially given the expectation that "everything is bigger in Texas."
So what are the soldiers laying on - and couldn't the people just walk up that ?Probably slick as shit rope.
I was visiting one of those "pictures that make you feel good" sites, and probably could have copied at least half of them for this thread, but instead I just picked my favorite.

I love photos of planes breaking the sound barrier. There is a thing called the critical Mach number, which is when an airplane is flying below the speed of sound, but there are certain points along its surface where the airflow meets or exceeds Mach 1. These points are what you see in those condensation cones. You can also see a small shock wave just above the canopy of the forward plane.
Look at this picture closely. What am I missing here?
How can you tell it's a mail plane ?
Well didn't you see the littlehookballs ?
People in Falkirk, Scotland must really like horses. That's cool; horses are cool. So they made these really big horse sculptures.

The tree was verified as standing 115.55 m (379.1 ft) tall by Stephen Sillett. The tree was found in a remote area of Redwood National and State Parks purchased in 1978. The exact location of the tree has not been revealed to the public for fear that human traffic would upset the ecosystem the tree inhabits. The tree is estimated to contain 530 m3 (18,600 cu ft) of wood and to be roughly 700–800 years old.
A tree so awesome that it gets a name!
A tree so awesome that it gets a name!
And an awesome name!
But first prize goes to this one: a splinter of wood through a concrete curb:I'll take a stab at it, but I suspect I'll get shot down by some of the DTF science nerds. You're looking at a tremendous amount of energy being imparted to both surfaces equally. That energy will want to travel away from the point of impact in equal amounts. In the case of the wood and the curb, that means that you had about 6" of cement to absorb that energy as opposed to the length of the board. In this case the back of the curb started to give way while the board was still compressing within its tolerance.
I don't know enough about physics to understand how this happens, since obviously the concrete is much harder than the wood. The only think I can think of is that the wood is being impaled through it with so much speed and force that it "doesn't have time to break" as it pokes a hole through.

That might be true of some places, but not of this place:Yeah, first thing I thought of when reading that comment was Kandersteg, which looks like it might not be too far away from your picture. Even if your expectations are of one thing, that doesn't mean there isn't still amazing beauty to be found. I really wouldn't need Halong Bay to look like something unEarthly to get off pretty hard on the beauty of it all.

Summer in Japan means colorful explosions in the sky, where some 200 firework festivals called “hanabi taikai” are held across the country in July and August, a tradition that dates back to the early 18th century. At many events, pyrotechnicians actually compete to create the best firework show, with extreme attention to detail in scale, color, and design. Photographer Keisuke trekked to several shows this summer and captured the most eye-opening moments of these nighttime events. Although just 25 years old, the photographer has received numerous awards for his landscape photography of Japan and he’s amassed quite a following on Instagram.

2 things would prevent such a trampoline being in Germany, I think: the springs are not covered, and there's only normal ground around it.Germans are so obsessed with security, even more than Americans. It is almost as if 9/11 happened in Germany. ::)

I don't know why but my dumbass self very quickly initially thought "WOW THAT IS REALLY DANGEROUS".
...
Hm. Change does weird things to a person sometimes. :millahhhh
Is it really anymore dangerous than if it was 4 feet off the ground, like the ones we had as kids? Hell, at least with that if you overshoot you land on grass, rather than halfway across the frame.
I couldn't post a picture of it because it's on Pinterest (fuck Pinterest), but somebody had one of those build right next to their pool. I gotta give a hearty hell yeah to those folks.
We have an above-ground trampoline, and I love moving it over next to the deep end of the pool on hot summer days. SO much fun! The only factors that make it a bit dangerous are (1) it can get a bit slippery when wet, and (2) you can't see exactly where the edge of the pool is when you are on the back edge or even the middle of the tramp (the pool is an irregular shape). The former problem is solved by simply being aware and careful. For the second, I just mark off a couple of arrows on the tramp with sidewalk chalk so people know where to jump and it is easier to get your orientation. But loads of fun.

When my kids were younger, we had an above ground trampoline. At the time, we had some yard improvements done, and our insurance company did a drive by to see. They saw the trampoline (which had a protective net around it) and basically gave us days to remove it or they would drop us. We called a number of other insurance companies and no one would touch it. We ended up calling some secondary market insurers but it just didn't make sense as it was so expensive.

Here was my view from Cadillac Mountain :lol A big reason I want to go back is to experience it with nice weather, had fog and rain my entire trip there which I honestly didn't mind, made for a really eerie feeling that was an experience in itself, but definitely ruined any chance of having nice views of the sunrise/sunset.

Yes, that is a sunset, I took that photo at around 5 PM few weeks ago (no daylight time here yet). It is in Osijek, Croatia, on Drava river, where I live at the moment. That on the left, right under the setting sun, is a Baroque old town/fort.
Tomislav, that's a nice sunset (?) picture. Really nice view. Where is that?

I am an avid nature photographer, and have seen some pretty cool shit. I took this shot from my back yard 4 years ago. These are mammatus clouds, which will sometimes form after a big storm is just starting to break apart. I have several shots of these clouds over the years, but this one definitely looked the most surreal.

Excellent shots CCD! I try to share when I take some interesting pictures. The lunar eclipse was the last interesting shot I took.
CCD I really enjoy your pictures. I like Nature shots a lot and those Sand Dunes look really, really amazing.
I hope others will post more photos....so mine won't seem so gratuitous!
Excellent shots as always CCD, I need to take some landscape shots, go on hikes, etc.
That's cool,
I had a bad photography session last night. I went to my favorite stargazing place, tried to take a couple Milky way shots and I attempted to do the same as your image. I was trying to reflect the night sky on the lake, but for the life of me I couldn't get a good shot. I'll try again next time I'm up there.
Also, I had a face palm moment when I realized I charged everything except my tracking moment
I took this mind bending shot in 2012. It's a reflection of a beaver lodge in a river....then flipped 180 degrees in post processing to create an even "cooler" effect.

Amazing composition!
@Vmadera00 that sounds really cool. I'm sure the pictures will be great regardless.
Curious about the gear you guys use, any use mirrorless cameras that seem to be the trend now? I'm sure I asked it before and the answers are buried somewhere in the thread. I have a Nikon D7500 that I bought due to a price mistake on Best Buy. Came with two lenses 18-55mm and 55-300mm. Got the whole thing for $800, sold my old kit (Nikon D5200) for about $450 so overall didn't cost that much. I thought I had pics of it stored somewhere, but I don't so will take some tomorrow and post here.
I also have an 8m fisheye lens along with two prime lenses (35mm & 50mm), I absolutely love taking shots with all of them. Thing is 90% of my 1000s of pics are of my kids and each lens captures really unique situations.
CCD I'm debating going the same route and getting a mirrorless set. I might get a used mirrorless camera to dip my fingers into that world and see how it plays out. If I like it I'll just get rid of the Nikon though I really like my lenses. I feel like I'm missing out on excellent 4k video features and while the D7500 takes great 4k video, the autofocus sucks, it's auto cropped by 1/3 and has barely any stabilization. I find myself taking more and more videos of the kids and wished the camera would take capture better video.
There is a photography thread to which this type of discussion may be better suited.

Been meaning to ask if that picture was a composite and stitched together? I see on the page the specs show that it's shot at 16mm. Was it that wide to capture the entire Canyon/valley? Either way it looks gorgeous on my giant 32" 4k monitor.
Beautiful shot again and I get to really appreciate it looking on a large screen. The sun hitting the canyon with several different shades of red/orange gives a gorgeous contrast.
This was taken just after sunrise near the south entrance to Yellowstone. I actually took this with a Sony point and shoot, over 16 years ago. My friend had his Canon DSLR with multiple lenses....he was still digging them out when I snapped this shot. He kicks himself to this day.
The most interesting part was that this very old bison actually stayed in his lane for the entire time we could see him. We watched him walk at a VERY slow, labored pace until he disappeared into the fog on the other side. It was just him and the two of us for many miles....we didn't see any other cars or bison for almost an hour. A very surreal moment to be sure. Plodding along, alone...it seemed like he might have sensed his own demise.
