Title: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: abydos on July 23, 2009, 12:18:40 AM
One of the best bands in the genre and certainly among the best when finding the right balance between crazy instrumentals and songwriting.
Anyway...

Shadow Gallery  July 22, 2009 The band is at the mixing stage for their new album. A release date will be posted in two weeks.
I'm extremely excited about this album, even though it's without the great voice and singing of Mike (RIP).

This makes me very very very happy. I was wondering if they'd ever finally get this new album out and it's good to know it's closer than I expected.

I really like this band a lot. They do a good job combining DT style prog metal with SymX, while bringing everything back around closer to Queensyrche. Any word on who is doing the vocals?

And I hope the rumor about DC Cooper handling vocals turns out to be true.

I have only listened to Tyranny, and I think it´s a masterpiece. Call me crazy, but some of it reminds me of Images & Words. Not that they´re similar, but mostly in the sense of a perfectly balanced album, and amazing melodies combined with top notch musicianship that is not overwhelming.

I have Room V somewhere but I haven´t listened to it.

The singer died last year, right?

:sadpanda: I hate to say that but yeah; he passed away.He was so talented singer of progressive genre. Though this band is so amazing most of listeners didn't give any attention than they deserve. That's sad!

SG's forums who apparently got it from Gary's Facebook page. And SG's Facebook too.
I think DC will be on vocals but not on all songs. They will probably use him on a song or two, they will sing some songs themselves and then get a few more singers. At least that's how I think it will happen.
Going to listen to First Light right after Anesthetize.

I like DC Cooper, but I really hope they have another singer to do more of the soprano, sg-type vocal lines. He's a nice complementary singer, but I'm skeptical how good he'd be as their lead vocalist throughout an album.

I doubt he will sing on all the songs as a lead singer. He did really awesome job on New World Order so my hopes are high for his performance. I think originally that song was supposed to be sung with James.

D.C. Cooper is one of my favorites, an amazing vocalist and front man. I hope he does a lot of the work on this album, but it would be nice to hear a bunch of voices on this one.

   HEY Everyone!

It has been a long time since I have been here.

Yes, the rumors are true- Shadow Gallery has completed a new record.
Just 30 minutes ago, I finished the final reference mix.
If I drank beer, I would be having one right now, toasting myself to the reduction in studio hours I can expect starting tomorrow!
The last 12 days have been sub-mixing here at New Horizon Music Studios, but the real magic is still happening with Rich Mouser at Mousehouse Studios who is doing the final stages prior to Mastering which is next and scheduled for roughly a week or two from now.
It is too soon to state release dates yet, but it could be late October or early November.

I will check back here next week sometime and give you guys some more information if I can. We are not announcing singers or song titles yet, so you'll have to wait on that.

Carl, Brendt and myself do sing more on this album, but we are not the main lead vocalist. You will hear a lot of our voices on this record though. I think Brendt and I added more BG vocals on this record than any other.

There are a few guests and changes on this record and this information will be posted when the promotion gets underway.

It has been really wonderful to hear the encouragement from so many, asking us to continue. Moving on without your lead singer and good friend was not an easy task for us, but we are very pleased with this new record and are excited about all of you hearing it.

As always, thanks for your patience and support.
Peace and Love-

Gary Wehrkamp

Woah, the bit at the end sounds nothing like anything Shadow Gallery has ever done.

The page also makes it pretty clear InsideOut will remain separate from Century Media and not just be absorbed into it, which is certainly a good thing.

After the tragic passing of lead singer Mike Baker in October 2008, “Digital Ghosts” introduces new lead singer Brian Ashland and not only sees the entire band once again sharing additional vocal duties but also features guest vocal appearances by Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) and Clay Barton (Suspyre) to compliment the release. With “Digital Ghosts”, Shadow GallerY’s members Brendt Allman, Carl Cadden-James, Gary Wehrkamp, new addition Brian Ashland and returning drummer Joe Nevolo (who appears on two songs of the record) have focused their powerful energies on creating a seamless blend of progressive, metal, and symphonic rock as a transcendent work of musical art that advances the boundaries of these genres into new directions.

Guitarist / Keyboardist Gary Wehrkamp comments on “Digital Ghosts” as follows:

“As a band, we are thrilled to have new music to share with everyone. This album is a dedication to our wonderful fans, and also to the memory of our singer and friend Mike Baker.
We had to deal with a few tragic events during the course of this recording, but pressing on we approached the production the way we always do: Trying to provide our very best. We had a terrific time making this record and hope all the emotion and love we put into it endures, transcends and touches every one who is ready for it.
You can expect some shades of a new direction on this record.  We had long been trying to incorporate more prog elements and the time was right to stretch out a little bit, while remaining true to the heavy and powerful rock based songs that have been a staple of SHADOW GALLERY since the earliest days”.

The track-listing for the album reads as follows:

SHADOW GALLERY – “Digital Ghosts”:

1. With Honor
2. Venom
3. Pain
4. Gold Dust
5. Strong
6. Digital Ghost
7. Haunted

So... Chris and Joe have been barely (if at all) involved. This sucks. It's good that the rest of the band can make awesome music on their own.

No idea. I must say I'm not a big fan of the idea of that Halford wannabe in SG. Hopefully they've made him sound good. As for the rest - I have no idea. From what I heard of Clay Burton he is some pretty ordinary sounding guy.

a lot of people raved about Suspyre at ProgPower last weekend. I missed them since they played on Thursday,  and I only attended the festival (and not the Showcase).

Ever since I've been meaning to check them out, but that crowd tends to like music and vocals that are not so much my thing anymore. Suspyre added me on myspazz like 4 years ago, but I never listened to them. Perhaps if he's good on this new SG album, I'll want to. But part of it could be just the writing in general (which is maybe my biggest problem with most prog and progmetal music anyway).

Hey everyone!

Sorry if the teasers are teasing, but I suppose that is their job...

In a few days there will be another video promotion clip - We have planned to have a new one every Friday. AFTER this next one, you will be hearing Brian Ashland, who is the band's new singer.

For obvious reasons, he did come along and join very deep into the recording, and this is one of the reasons he is not singing on more tracks than 5... Still we planned on a few guest singers right from the beginning of the record and so we do have Ralf Scheepers - who is not singing like he does on Primal Fear (well this is what one reviewer told me - I really do not know) - and I can say that the 2 songs I did hear him sing on, with his fantastic band "Primal Fear" were nothing short of incredibly impressive.
On the song "Venom" Clay Barton does sing a little more than half of this song (as a duet with another singer to be named later). Clay was wonderful to work with in every capacity. I think his voice is very strong and quite appropriate for the aggressiveness we were looking for.
If we did not find Brian, we would have asked Clay to sing on more songs :)

and then we had DC Cooper, my friend and wonderfully talented singer sing (a very last minute session) on one other song called "Stingray" which fit best as a bonus track on the JAPAN disc (sorry non Japanese DC fans!). This was planned that he would be a guest singer all along, and somehow many just assumed he would take over as the lead vocalist role.
We are happy to have worked with him on this song.

I was equally impressed with the guest solos from Srdjan Brankovic (lead guitar solo on the song 'Strong', and Vivien Lalu - yes, the same guy who helped set up this forum - as a keyboard soloist on the song 'gold dust')

AS far as the drummer issue, Joe plays on a few tracks- We wanted more, but the timing, scheduling etc did not work out , plus we had other plans of another drummer, "carved in stone" drummer Kevin soferra to appear on a few tracks - the same reasons prevented this from happening despite a whole lot of pre-planning...
As far as who did drum, all I can tell you is that it was Carl and Brendt's idea, and I was opposed, but in the end I was happy with their choice.

There will be clips (which i will be creating this week) on myspace - WITH VOCALS in 2 weeks, maybe sooner... Coordinating the promotion of a long awaited CD must be synched between the record company, the independent promotional people (from a few different companies and countries) and the band, but I guess you can say it officially began this past Friday.

interviews are fully underway this week, so you'll be able to read more in mags and online soon... but I will still try to have direct contact with anyone here and answer questions when i can!
thanks!

Gary

SG fans...Brian Ashland.... :censored

There is a damn good reason why they choose Ashland to sing on this album. Imagine Geoff Tate of Queensryche back in his prime from the good old days of Rage for Order and Operation Mindcrime....times that by a hint of Matt barlow of 'Iced Earth' times that by a smidgen of Russell Allen and you get the new singer. SG fans do not worry! I joined this forum just to inform the amazing news.

Btw, Ralph Scheepers SOUNDS FRICKEN AMAZING. Listen to the song "Running IN the Dust" by Primal Fear and tell me he isn't something special. :metal

And Clay Barton is a mixture of Jorn Lande and Russell Allen of Symphony X. It just so happens, he is also a huge fan of those two's singing style. I love his band Suspyre. With DC Cooper (former lead singer from Royal Hunt and sang on New World Order on SG's Tyranny Album) on the album how can we not get excited?!

Album is out on November 3rd in the states!!!! And OCtober 23rd everywhere else!!!!

I got into Suspyre recently. Their stuff is amazing. Sax is a prog band = pure kick ass.
They have great instrumentals and good vocals. Plus the variety of instruments (including sax, violin and more) makes it really unique.

If you wanna try getting into them I'd recomend The Great Divide.

Thanks for the recommendation. Clay Barton is an awesome singer. It's gonna be awesome to hear his type of singing backed by Shadow Gallery's music. Strange to say but I love the orginal singer Mike Baker of SG, but his being gone is gonna really allow the band to expand and spread it's wings. I'm kind of hoping they get a bit harder which DEF looks the case on the new album.

Looks like SG are going to show up Dream Theater's latest release. DT's album was good but I'm hoping maybe Shadow Gallery could top it

I have a feeling that this will be the weirdest album in Shadow Gallery's career, even if they go on to make another ten records.  All the guest vocalists, the new lead singer only being on five tracks.  Twenty years from now, this will be considered an obvious transition stage in their history.

That being said, I still think it's gonna be awesome.

Being that the new album only has 7 songs and a bonus song depending on where you buy it, The one singer being on 5 songs means there is going to be some EPIC prog being created. listening to some of it today..there are some moments..the vocal harmonies work. The new singer, while he's not a bad singer, he sounds mostly like a mix of a couple traditional sounding vocalists in Prog/Power Metal.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Nick on October 01, 2009, 11:12:28 AM
Perhaps it's just how much I love Mike Baker, but my reaction to the new vocalist was one of near repulsion. I have a feeling that it's just because it's different.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Stallion1 on October 01, 2009, 12:35:50 PM
A mixture of traditional Prog/Power metal...that's bad SoundscapeMN? Isn't that what we want? What's so traditional about his voice. It's extremely distinct, unique sounding, and it's gonna help shadow gallery further their music. He's really comes across with emotion in his vocals.

My reaction to the new singer is one of PURE JOY.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Nick on October 01, 2009, 01:27:24 PM
I know I'm being quite picky here, but DC Cooper would have been pure joy, this guy is certainly not... or at least not from what I've heard thus far.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Stallion1 on October 01, 2009, 01:45:32 PM
DC Cooper is great. Did you ever get Amaran's Plight? That's my favorite album of all time...at least for right now.

I think it's okay as a fan to be picky. I'm a huge Baker fan as well but I think we all need to realize that it'll take awhile for the new singer to grow on us depending on how much you loved baker. But I'm glad they didn't get a clone, getting a clone would've sucked. Plus most of Shadow Gallery sings on the albums, Baker was a big part of the vocals but the background vocals play a huge part of the band.

I truly think this guy is going to help carry the Legacy of Shadow Gallery on.

Yeah, when I first heard the latest trailer I was actually expecting Mike to sing and then I couldn't really take the new singer very well. I'll get used to him and he has a fine voice but as someone said, my first thoughts were "he sounds like *some singer* with a mix of a few other singers". Mike was unique, at least to my ears. The great vocal melodies seem to be present but it will take a lot of time to get used to not hearing Mike.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Nick on October 01, 2009, 02:35:53 PM
Yeah, expanding on some early conversation I will say that most of the time having something "generic" is not necessarily a bad thing, but when you go from something special to something generic, well that can be a bit disheartening.
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Stallion1 on October 01, 2009, 03:41:21 PM
you've only heard....like a minute. Give the guy a chance.  I've heard more of the music then you guys. A lot of complaints I would hear from some people on the first minute they heard Mike Baker was that they thought he was a generic singer. Not saying I agree with that at all. A lot of times it's the music that brings out the singer. He'll win you over. The guys of Shadow Gallery know what they are doing. From what I hear, people who have heard the entire album are ecstatic about it.

Hi all,

some of you may recognize my name from MP's Forum, I'm actually the person that did the interviews with Gary and Brian both. Glad everyone enjoyed them for the most part. I know there were probably other questions and/or topics I could have gone into but that's me, I always do things differently :)

I can tell you this though, the new album is definitely amazing and any SG fan should be very happy. I can't imagine any SG fan not enjoying this album from start to finish. Personally I am blown away by it and there is a lot musically to digest. I've probably listened to it 20 times by now from start to finish. I can't stop playing it. Brian, in my opinion, is the perfect fit for taking the vocals on moving forward. He has great power and the Tate factor and it just "fits" is the only way I can put it.

I know we all loved Mike and his vocals will live on forever but look at it this way. It's a new chapter for SG and I just ask that everyone go into this album with an open mind and I can promise you that you will not be disappointed!!!

After the album is out for a little bit, I might do another interview with Brian and/or Gary. At that point I'll definitely post here and other places to get fans questions to ask.

I doubt anyone can listen to this with an open mind. It's like saying to a Queen fan to listen to Freddy's replacement with an open mind. Both FM and Mike had unique voices, maybe not the greatest ranges but they were unique and had character and emotion few are able to pass on with their voice. I like the new stuff I've heard, but as I've said before the melodies and layered vocals scream SG but the unique voice is gone. Brian sounds great, but at times he reminds me of Tate when he sings in mid-range. The music seems like it could be the best SG album yet.
In a few weeks/months I may be able to give it an "open ear" but it's just too soon for me.

Sometimes he does sound like Tate but his voice is more varied than Tate's. He has some highs, he has mids and lows but he can do more "voices" than Tate. Also, he's not a singer mainly. He's a guitar player :D

RIP  :'(

I just listened to the album. First impressions: Awesome, just like their previous records. Like someone said earlier; Ashland really sounds like Tate but in a good way, they found a worthy succesor in Brian. Digital Ghost and Haunted are my favourites at this first listen but it may change later on. The two demo tracks with Baker felt a little bit sad to listen to, but they were very good. The a capella version of Digital Ghosts (the track) was a sweet adition.

10/10, carry on SG.

Post by: Nick on November 07, 2009, 11:03:43 PM
Okay, so tonight was fucking amazing. Such a cool night.

We get there, go in, and we each get Digital Ghost name tags, and then are able to proceed to an awesome barroom with a connected dining room. Very beautiful place, and there was free h'orderves (or however that is spelled) and an open bar courtesy of the band. The fans were able to chill for about an hour, mingle, eat, and then an announcement brought everyone into the bar room where they had a projector set up.

Then we got to watch a rough cut of the video the guys shot for Gold Dust. Looks like it could be really cool, and a lot of it was shot as if the guys were playing a live show, and I joked that now we kind of know what it would be like to see the guys actually play live, but that joke was nullified a little bit later...

So after the video the guys came out and they all talked about their personal contribution to the album, or about the lyrics, or how Brian came to be in the band, and of course about the death of Mike, which included a very touching video tribute that they played. One of the more interesting things to note during this was the hinting that the guys might actually play live at some point. I would come to find out later talking to them that ROSfest is a distinct possibility in the future, and you can bet I'd be there for that.

So then people went about getting food and drinks again for a short while, and then they brought out three 24x36 posters with an exclusive design to be auctioned off. I bid up to $35 on each but ended up getting beat on all of them.

Then the guys came back to a table for a signing session and to talk to everyone. Each one took the time to get to know me and Amanda a little bit and they really came across as super nice guys, and they were signing pretty much everything anyone put in front of them. Out of all of them I spent the most time with Gary, and he was shocked at all the booklets I had for him (from many side-projects and what have you) and he was thrilled that I had so many and loved signing them, and one of the best pieces of memorabilia I know have is my Universal Migrator booklet that now says, "Nick, I owe you some money!"

After they had gone through everyone getting things signed they took pictures with people. This is now 4.5 hours after this shindig all started.

So now, here is my picture with Shadow Gallery, a picture of all of them up front speaking, and then an awesome picture of a present the rest of the guys gave to Brian during their speeches.

Damn you and your proximity to the band you lucky bastard  :censored .  Thanks for sharing though, I'm glad to know that A) those guys seemed like really cool, approachable, down to earth guys who truely love what they do B) SG were able to see how much love there is for their work.

It sounds like if I was there I would have had a much lighter wallet when it was all said and done.

Sorry for the double post, but it's been 8 days and I want to talk about this album now that it's been out.

I don't know how much of it is because I haven't been this anxious for a non-Dream Theater CD to arrive or what, but I've been listening to this CD much more than the Redemption back catalog that came in the same shipment.  I generally have a very hard time accepting new singers, but I think I'm digging Ashland.  He's not Mike Baker, but he sounds like a Shadow Gallery singer to me.  Another big part of that is that everyone else seems to on top of their game, and it definately is the best SG album from a production stand point - the sound is crisp and clean.  The song writing is on par with most of their catalog, and like I said before, musically they brought their A game to the writing table.

I'm very pleased with this effort, and hope they decide to continue on.  I hope I just don't have to wait another 4 years for an album!

I never thought I would say this, but this might be album of the year for me.  Yes, even over my former contender Redemption's Snowfall on Judgement Day and Devin Townsend Project's two albums.  The audio clips that were posted pre-release don't do it any justice, I was actually luke-warm to the samples and was worried about the album, but I was way off.  It's seriously that good.

I have two big problems with this album.

First, whatsisbucket is not Mike Baker.  Something about the phrasing and the...texture, maybe...of a lot of his vocals just made him sound like he was doing his best impression of Mike.  It was kind of annoying.

Second, I think this has been overhyped on DTF, so I went into it expecting to be blown away.  It was good, sure, and it will probably get better with more listens, but...not as eargasmic as I was led to believe.  Not even close.

:(
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: Dr. DTVT on November 19, 2009, 10:58:20 PM
I looked up over-hyped in the dictionary, and all I saw was a CD covers for "The Incident" and "Crack the Skye".

Mike wasn't going to be replaced, but what I liked was rather than pushing Brian out and making his voice upfront, they supplemented it with lots of backing vocals, moreso than on most non-ensemble projects.  You can't blame him for trying to sound like Mike either...when Dickenson left Maiden, they replaced him with a capable, but entirely different style of singer and for the most part it didn't work.  In a strange sort of way, I think Mike's absence led SG to have more backing vocals, which really adds a lot, and I don't think they would have done that if Mike was still around.

As for hype, it wasn't hyped nearly as much as some of the other stuff I've seen here.  There was that Stallion guy who seems to have disappeared after his trumping of SG and bashing Russell Allen, and some comments about the samples, but when the album dropped, it kind of got quiet.  I just really liked what they did with the overall sound of the album.

Strong is the only song I haven't had the immediate urge to listen to repeatedly at this point.  Maybe I'm coming from the opposite side of you, I was skeptical on how this album was going to turn out between the loss of Mike and the preview samples, so I was very pleasantly surprised.  I was also very anxious for this album.  I think it will grow on you, if you learn to accept what SG is now.

I disagree, Shadow Gallery has always had a lot of backing vocals. I don't think that there was a major addition of them on this album. I also disagree that the new guy is trying to sound like Mike. He has his own voice, the reason it sounds like older Shadow Gallery albums is because the backing vocals are still there in force.

Digital Ghost is my only album from SG, yet I was very impressed by it.  Just from this album they seem very underrated.  The new singer does a wonderful Tate.  Really a wonderful album.  I just found it a little strange that there are only 7 songs and there are so much vocals from the bass player, the other dude that sings on Venom, and Ralf Scheepers singing a whole song to himself.  I just find that very odd.  Now I'm a huge Ralf fan, so I'm not complaining, his song is definitely not a weak link at all, but a whole track, from a guy that usually sings strict power metal.....odd.

Why Room V, get Legacy! Shadow Gallery is one of my favourite bands ever. I managed to see them live twice. The second time they recognised me in the audience and I had a lengthy chat with all of them. That was awesome, especially considering I saw them on the first and last day of their tour. Though the set list was the same both times, the second time they definitely seemed more 'into' it and the performance was great. Really one of my greatest live band memories.

been a fan for almost 12 years now. got into them about the same time as i got into symph x and angra (and only a couple months after getting into dream theater). upon the discovery of dream thetaer and the old DTforum, i quickly established those 4 bands as the heavy hitters in the soaring-vocals/virtuoso-players progressivemetal world. ...and really, i dont think ive discovered a band in that vein quite as good as those 4 in the 12 years since (not for a lack of trying).
Tyranny was the first thing i heard, and i was pretty insta-floored  :omg:  by cranking the opening track on that first spin.
really, all their stuff is top notch, though i never listen to the first two albums anymore. i never thought the song writing was quite there yet, and the production definitely improved by the time Tyranny came around.

hopefully Nick's sad face in regards to untellable news isnt indicative of bad news...would love to hear a digital ghosts follow-up at some point in the not-so-distant future.

No, it's not that news is bad or anything, just that I'm not free to speak about the band. At this point there is probably things I could say, but since the last two times I saw Brian and Carl we were all piss drunk hell if I can remember what was kosher and what wasn't. :lol

Oh, and a really cool thing. I got to listen to an early Sorcerer cassette, the band that would become Shadow Gallery, and hear some pre-Shadow Gallery songs in their early form. Only the band and a few friends have these cassettes so it was really cool to hear, and would be amazing if they make it out on the debut albums re-release someday or something.

Wow....  No Shadow Gallery posts in well over half a year (did a search).  I've been on a Shadow Gallery kick the last few days. They've been one of my favorite bands for years.

Not sure how I could have missed this, but I totally missed this awesome song, from some foreign release of Digital Ghost.  I stumbled across it on youtube and was touched by it.. Features the vocals of Mike Baker (not from any previous albums).

https://youtu.be/Y2LyXVwDyZ4

Man, I love this band.  I really hope for a new album someday.  Last album was really good.  Despite their singer passing away, the album stood with the rest of the catalog.  That was a good time, I remember the new Shadow Gallery album releasing pretty much at the same time as the new Transatlantic.

Hey, I had almost forgotten about this band! They have been silent for quite a few years. The last studio release was in 2010, right? Or was it 2009?

Yes I have and they were awesome both times, but the second was arguably better; they were obviously more warmed up from the touring.

I saw them, along with Nick, ZepplinDT, and Phantasmatron (maybe others) at their first ever show.  It was pretty awesome.  Afterwards, the band hung out and had a bonfire.  Very cool dudes, I hope to see them in Atlanta in September.

Shadow Gallery played a local warm up show tonight for friends and fans who are going to RoSfest. Had to be unannounced as with most festival contracts they aren't allowed to play nearby shows. Had a fantastic time, and anyone seeing them on the current tour won't be disappointed.

(Though they are not playing the full album, so don't expect that)

I'm that one weirdo who loves every album except Tyranny and Room V. I don't know what it is, man. Those two drag me down every time.

I need to marathon the albums again though. I think the last time I really listened to Shadow Gallery was when Digital Ghosts came out. Hard to believe it's almost four years already.

Have to bump this thread under some very sad circumstances.

Saturday night/Sunday morning, Gary Wehrkamp was playing a show in Stroudsburg with two of his bands, and his wife and son were in attendance at the show. While they were out his home and recording studio were burned to the ground in a total loss. While thankfully no one was hurt, Gary is a musician who makes a living as a musician (though not with Shadow Gallery), and so this means he has lost his home and his business. There is a benefit being set up for him, and I will keep this thread updated with info. Not sure what people would be able to do, but it won't hurt to keep everyone in the loop in case they can help.

yeah that is very unfortunate. You'd think he has home-owners insurance that would help. But if a Benefit is setup, every little bit could help.

Plus the loss loved items (photos, clothing, etc) which $ can never bring back.

Having been to Gary's house and studio, I would say there is a 95% chance he had insurance. The questions are how soon that money would come back to him, and what it would all cover.

It is a good point. But, depending on the materials in the house, safety measures (fire alarm placement for example), origin of the fire, and actual location of the person at given time, a fire can still be extremely dangerous. People tend to underestimate how fast fires can spread. If there was anybody at home, there would be a chance to save their belongings, but there would also be a chance for (severe) trauma (especially in the case of children). As far as I am concerned something can be said for both.  I don't know what their living situation was so I can't really say anything useful about it.

That said, I wish the family the best, this is a really tragic event for them.

Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: ronnibran on October 30, 2018, 07:33:47 PM
The Digital Ghosts album has aged well for me.  I thought it was pretty solid start to finish and I go back to it just as often as some other albums.  The songs "Digital Ghost" and "Haunted" are both SG classics for me.

That said, it still doesn't really feel completely like a Shadow Gallery album to me.  Mike Baker had such a distinctive voice.  I don't mind Brian Ashland... His voice is just SO different from Mike's.  I feel almost like Brian was tacked onto the last album (not sure if it's b/c of the guest singers or what), I think another album with him might be way better.

And that said, anything they release will be an automatic buy and I'm confident they wouldn't let me down.

Brian Ashland (I believe) and the album is Digital Ghosts. Digital Ghosts has several vocalists including DC Copper from Royal Hunt and Ralph something from Primal Fear. So there are a few songs with them and a few with Brian.

A little bit of a correction here, the standard US edition has only Shadow Gallery's vocalists, primarily Brian Ashland and Ralf Scheepers. The Japanese edition has a bonus track with D.C. Cooper.

Shadow Gallery is one of my favorite bands.  Shame they haven't released anything in forever.  I didn't discover them until maybe 2007 so I've only had the "new album coming out" experience once.  Fun fact, the album (Digital Ghosts) came out the same day as Transatlantic's The Whirlwind - a phenomenon of that magnitude (albums by two of my favorite bands on same day) will likely never happen again.

Tyranny and Room V are hands down my favorite albums of theirs.  Legacy is also great but when I revisit that it's mostly for First Light which is amazing.  I've tried many times but never got into the S/T album.  Carved in Stone is hit and miss for me, some great songs and some songs I never listen to.  I thought Digital Ghosts was great (basically all the songs).

Top 5 SG songs for me:  First Light, Rain, Digital Ghost, Ghost of a Chance, The Andromeda Strain (hard to choose just 5...)
Title: Re: Shadow Gallery Thread - v. Digital Ghosts
Post by: jammindude on July 13, 2021, 08:31:26 PM
I first discovered them when I got an in store promo for Tyranny. I played it in store CONSTANTLY.

I tracked down Carved in Stone, but the S/T was tougher to get ahold of back then. I did finally order it later after Legacy came out.

Legacy was always a bit hit and miss for me, although I thought Cliffhanger 2 was better than the original. I LOVE CiS. I need to pull that one out again…but ya, Tyranny is still the best.  Room V is excellent, and I remember spinning DG a lot when it first came out, but haven’t pulled it out in forever.

I think I’m overdue for an SG binge.

They are a very consistently good band, but I always thought there was something a little 'off' on their production, and with Mike's voice (the latter is just a personal tastes thing).

What a special band this was. Been years since I listened to Tyranny and Room V now but took the full run by playing them in order and both albums are masterpieces.

However on Digital Ghosts there's this bonus track called Two Shadows. I think it's an unused song from Tyranny since it basically has the Ghost of a Chance melody etc. Anyway it's such a beautiful song for anyone who haven't heard it. Honestly it crushes my heart a bit since it somehow feels like a goodbye to Baker. Not sure why but that's the feelings attached to it. Anyway here's the beauty:

Sorry, no news on new album.  But Shadow Gallery has started a new podcast (2 episodes released thus far).  So far they've talked about the history/formation of the band, and the writing and recording of the debut album.  Next episode I think will be on Carved In Stone.  And I imagine the series will continue until they've talked about all their albums.  Good stuff so far.  One hint at new music was Gary made it sound like a strong possibility that in 2022 we'd see a re-recording of one song from the debut.  No mention of a new album yet.

Below is from Facebook.  The podcast is called Shadow Gallery: The Untold Stories.

Listen now to the first episode of Shadow Gallery: The Untold Stories,  hosted by Gary Wehrkamp and Jill Hughes.  The first guests on the podcast are original founding members Brendt Allman and Carl Cadden-James.

I’d actually be shocked if there was ever a new SG album. It was a wonderful run while it lasted. In fact, they probably accomplished more in the way of influence and popularity than any “strictly studio” band that I can think of. It’s actually pretty impressive what they DID accomplish considering they only played a small handful of live shows (and very late into their career at that. I don’t even think those shows happened before Baker died, did they?)

The only thing they could do now is maybe release an official live recording of one of those shows and call it a day.

As far as the podcast goes, I saw they had started that and I was really excited to check it out. I’ve just been super busy.

Nope, they didn't. And I am very happy I saw them both times they came over here.

And yeah, I get a feeling too that Shadow Gallery is "done". Not officially done, but "Savatage-done", when you know the guys are still out there and sometimes you get news but you just don't hold your breath for an album or tour that might as well never come.

I also agree about them being outstanding even with the handicap of never playing live. They really deserved more, and Mike's loss was huge and very sad and robbed us of a great talent.

They didn't say which song they would re-record.  It was brought up when they answered a question on if they'd ever re-record the debut album (or mix, or do anything with).  Which the answer to that is "no" (other than doing one song).

That's nice, I'm probably gonna get it at some point. I still remember hearing it for the first time at my best friend's place on his cassette player and being absolutely floored by some of the solos - Cliffhanger's solo intro before the vocals is so cool and the one starting shortly after the 7th minute mark. It must have been 2000 or 2001.

We were both laughing at how impossible and cool it sounded and how it developed. Sprinkled in with some catchy melodies all throughout the songs and by the end when we heard Ghosthip we were just speechless.
