Many of the regulars of this side of the board may have heard me or other older bootleg maniac talking about the old DC++ lossless hub for Dream Theater bootlegs that once used to be the best place and the fastest mean to share our collection of taped shows with others.
For those who have never heard of it, here's a brief summary of what it was about in Weymolith's words:
The requirements for it is a DC++ client software which you'd then use to connect to the hub and to download shows from other users.
The rules are simple: nothing official is allowed, nothing that has been requested by MP not to be shared is allowed, no bands that are against bootlegs are allowed, which essentially means pretty much exact same as this very forum. Also not allowed are shows that have requests from the taper/releaser that it shouldn't be traded electronically (GDT shows mainly). You're not required to have any shows before entering the hub, but you are required to share what you download, this of course is to prevent people from just leeching. You can trade shows electronically at the hub but the main thing is to share the shows to everyone in the hub.
It all sounds heavenly, but the downside is that the hub requires a monthly 50$ to stay online and working. Throughout the years the hub was kept alive by the frequent donations of those who enjoyed the benefits it used to grant, but the passing of time inevitably saw a shrinking of the community that once used to gather more than 50 users, and as a result of this the donations rarefied, until finally the hub was forced to close almost a year ago.
I have always wanted to get the machine running again, as I highly value sharing with others what I had the luck to find within my hand's reach. However, I'm a student with no income and I cannot afford the monthly fee, nor I think would be fair if the burden were to fall completely on Weymolith or anyone else's shoulders, as it happened in the past.
Yet if there were to be at least ten potential users interested in this daring project and willing to contribute regularly, each of us would have to carry a tiny (and I hope affordable to the most) share of the onus.
My quantitative goal is to get below the minumum threshold of 5$ per month per user, that is to say at least 10 regular users. Now, if you understand and agree with our proposition and are willing to contribute to clear the unpleasant but inevitable economic encumbrance, just post here.
The more we are, the greater will be the possibilities of sharing and enjoyment, and of course the lighter will be the amount needed to keep the house together.
Any suggestion, comment, critique or just general piece of discussion is greatly welcomed. Feel free to chime in and say what you think and join up, if you can. :)

Thank you again wey :) great to se a bit of support!
-
I'm in for sure.
I find myself lacking in the excellent historic shows people talk about. I have bandwidth and resources to throw at it too, so it'd be nice to give back.
I'd even be happy to pay upfront for 6 months+ to help get support going.
Fantastic news!

Things are undr way, algo :D

Just checking in to see how things are going, excited! If any help is needed technically please send me a message I can offer my systems admin help. Or to throw some money at a server/bandwidth to kick it off.
Cheers!
-
Sounds exciting, and i'm also willing to chip in. Don't know a thing about DC++ though. So would like a newbie guide if possible
-
Well, register on the forum and we will be happy to have you with us!
I'm no expert of DC++ either, at least on the technical side of it. The best advice I can give you is to install the latest version (should be 0.811) and give a read to this https://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/webhelp/index.html
-
Post if you need help!

I'm new the bootleg/trading game, and this looked intriguing so I registered. I'm excited to see what's out there!

try sending him a PM

I did send Marco already PM but no reaction. Very strange, because he normally responds very fast.

Hey... I don't know if you're still going ahead with this, but, although I wouldn't be able to give $50 per month, I would be able to give a bit of money when possible, like wasteland, I'm a student, so income is minimal, however, I'm willing to put some money towards it if it will actually be useable and won't be down >60% of the time I go to use it!
-
It's usually up (although it's down until October) and ideally everyone should be paying a very small monthly sum voluntarily.
Also, I'm sorely disappointed in the fact that the downtime message doesn't say "We'll meet again my friend.... Someday sooooooooon..."
-
Hey, guys, it's nearly not October any more, and god fucking damn it, i want bootlegs, and I WANT THEM NOW!!!!!

That disturbed me to no end
-
So I'm a bit confused; do I need to pay money to get access to the bootlegs?
-
No, it's just that the hub is currently closed. However, it's customary to donate occasionally to offset the running costs if you use it.

Yeah I meant when it's not closed. So I don't have to?
-
No, but you should. I donated once but should've done it a lot more considering how much I used it. If the donations are short at the end of the month it gets shutdown, and if there are issues with donations being continually short or from the same couple people it will get restricted to active donors.
-
so, as nobody picked up on this, when will the hub be opening again? Does anyone know?
-
It will be open when it opens. And you actually did not ask, you demanded bootlegs.

My demand for bootlegs was a pointer for someone to tell me
Your thirst for bootlegs will be quenched on <date>
-
Well you're a needy prick aren't you
The hub generously run by a well-respected member in his own free time will be reopened when he finds the time to do so after his long move across the country.
-
Well you're a needy prick aren't you
Bit harsh, I was just joking. Sorry if I caused any offence
-
The hub will eventually re open and even though I am not aware of a date I believe it will be before year's end.
It could have stayed open all along, but unfortunately, as I was as well going through a time of logistic changes, I couldn't provide a 24/7 running machine to supply for Weymolith's absence.
-
Is the hub down again?
-
I don't think it has been back up since Wey originally closed it down.
I do miss it, like having lost a friend.
-
Maybe once he gets settled in again, I'll shoot him an email and see if he wants to resurrect it. I was always happy to chip in to pay for the expenses.
-
I am too waiting for it to come back and still paying my 13€/month to keep my seedbox account alive for the day the hub will rise again!
-
Marco's got a seedbox, and he never sleeps at night

Hi, I've only just joined this forum and am interested in the DC++ hub, I'd be more than willing to contribute $5 a month to gain access, so whoever is taking names please put mine down.
-
The Hub is currently in transition as I've moved and have yet to set up the server machine.

The Hub is currently in transition as I've moved and have yet to set up the server machine.
I found a stable version of DC to use in Linux so I've been on it for the last few weeks in the Echoes Hub and Iron Maiden hub.
Whatever you need, if you do need anything, let me know.
-
So that sounds like the Hub is going to get a comeback. I`m new to all that stuff, but I`d be really interested in the Hub and might donate some money from time to time.
-
Is a decent upstream connection needed to host a Hub? A decent machine? Any cost besides electricity and a standard internet connection? If Wey is going to be down for a while longer then maybe I can help...

I'm not sure if you saw the post on the GDT site but he is aiming for July to put a new release out. That's not too far away. Maybe the resurrection of hub will also be considered.
-
Ah okay. I don't have a GDT account on account of my age.
