I'm pretty sure this thread has probably appeared several times, but not recently, so here it is.
I'm going to go ahead and piss off a few people around here, but it should be totally worth it.
Porcupine Tree is the most overrated band on DTF.

I don't hate either artist, but aside from some "classic" acts that get overrated pretty much anywhere, my money is on Devin Townsend and Opeth.

This is entirely a matter of choice and personal tastes. That said, 4 for 4 so far in my books.

The thing with me isn't that I don't like Porcupine Tree. Musically, I think they're great, but they desperately need a singer.
I simply cannot understand what people see in him. I'm not trying to insult anyone, because a lot of people I respect here at DTF love them, and I certainly respect that, but I just don't get it.

Devin Townsend and Opeth for me. From the first time I heard Devin scream all over Steve Vai's S&R album I couldn't stand it. I've checked some stuff out and just don't get it.
Opeth's good albums have that growling that I can't stand and the ones that don't are boring.
But that's just me.

Porcupine Tree. I don't see what's all that great. I like them, but they've never made a huge impression on me.
Also, Opeth. Akerfeldt's a horrible growler and clean vocalist. And I listen to a lot of music with growls/screams. It's not that I don't like that type of vocals, it's that Akerfeldt does a horrible job with them.

Are you serious ??? Akerfeldt's growls are one of the few I can actually listen to and enjoy.

I'd say Devin Townsend gets way too much praise as I can't really enjoy a thing he's released. Also, what Sigz said about classic metal bands.

Porcupine Tree has a few fantastic songs, but I feel like as a whole they get a little bit more love than they deserve.
Also, Opeth, but that's probably just because I'm a member of the community that doesn't "get" growls.

Megadeth, I can't stand David's voice on most songs, and aside from a few classic songs, I just don't really like em.
Aside from that I can't really say any other band is over rated, I mean yeah I may not enjoy it, but I can see how others might, so I look at music from that perspective.

Fates Warning hardly ever get talked about. I only made a thread for them a couple of months ago. if anything they are very underrated.

I dunno if I'd call his producing/mixing abilities nothing more than par. He's definitely capable in that department.
For me, Devin Townsend isn't bad, just unremarkable. From the bits and pieces I've heard, he's a capable singer, and the music is okay, but his stuff just does nothing for me. I think a good part of the problem is his wall-of-sound style just makes everything sound thin and samey and bland.

I agree. I actually like him, I have quite a few of his solo albums along with a few SYL albums. Just most of his stuff doesn't really grab me at all. Still interesting and creative and I could see how people could really like his work.

I'm not sure if I can describe it. It just makes the music sound very... compressed? I got the feeling occasionally that with a different production, I could possibly start to get into his music, but the way it's done sucks the appeal out of it for me.

My vote also goes to Devin Townsend. To me, he seems like the type of musician who can produce a good album every 2-3 years but he doesn't want to. He instead releases two albums per year with lots of filler content. He has some good ideas, sometimes even with full songs that are really good, but they are overshadowed by the unfinished-sounding majority of his albums.

I like Porcupine Tree as well, but lets face it SW can't guitar solo his way out of a paper bag. some of those songs are really so good and then you get to the solo and it's like "whaa? my 8-year old kid could do a better job..."
Also have to jump on the Opeth overrato-wagon.
And Circus Maximus, yes I just went there.
I know it's not a great start to have one of my first posts piss off the DTF masses, but oh well. I promise I'm not a troll.

While I didn't, I can understand why the reactions some people may have to the raves his music gets here are considered overrating him. While I think The Dear Hunter and Steven Wilson are more overrated here, I'll flat out say it: Deconstruction is the most overrated album here. When it leaked the Devy thread treated it like the second coming, and more than one person said it was the best metal album ever. If you're not really a fan of his-and he's fallen out of favor with me over the past few years, I thought every one of the DTP albums but Ghost was just average-you're going to read that and think, "Christ, this guy is overrated."

BE is a top 3 PoS-album. Scarsick is really the only album I consider to be slightly weaker than the rest when it comes to PoS, and it still has some good songs.

I'd agree a bit in terms of newer Anathema. Don't get me wrong, this is nothing against WHBWH or WS, but it's almost sad how few talk about the older stuff. There's lots of gold that is just as good as the newer albums.

i think the newer albums are more well-constructed, though older albums are obviously awesome (Judgement especially)
and Angelica is such a beautiful, beautiful song ♥

I tried a few of the bands that get raved about on both mp.com and here. PT is okay but definitely nothing that gets me interested. Pain of Salvation is also okay and again, I get quite bored pretty quick. I cannot get past Opeth's growling vocals and Trivuum's screaming vocals. Circus Maximus is awesome even if they wear the DT influence on their sleeves. Angra was a huge surprise for me and I loved them. And finally Blind Guardian is probably the best recommendation I have ever had

Serious answer time of bands I actually think are overrated:
Anathema: WHBWH has some good songs, and so does WS, but the majority of the latter is pretty boring (and either the second or third track is a definite rip-off of "Season's End" by Marillion. I keep on wanting to sing along to that when it comes on). Judgment is a pretty cool guy though, but that doesn't mean they're the best evar.
Metallica: I understand their contributions to metal and rock and all that, but the early stuff outside of RtL and most of MoP doesn't really interest me.
Queensryche: I love Operation: Mindcrime and like Empire a lot, but I don't see the appeal of those other early albums that made people love them so much.
A year or so ago I would have said PoS or Symphony X as well but discussion about them seems to have decreased sharply in the last year and a half or so.

I don't follow the thread that much so that might be true. I still think people that like this band a lot overrate it.

Rush has the lowest crap ratio of any band ever. But maybe Fountain of Lamneth counts...
