Congrats boys! Awesome!

13. Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance
On The Backs Of Angels
Dream Theater
[Roadrunner Records]
White Limo
Foo Fighters
Track from: Wasting Light
[RCA Records/ Roswell Records]
Curl Of The Burl
Mastodon
[Reprise Records]
Public Enemy No. 1
Megadeth
[Roadrunner Records]
Blood In My Eyes
Sum 41
Track from: Screaming Bloody Murder

-
Sum 41 is a little weird, but the rest are awesome nominations!
-
Really? Wow that's great news! And odd.
-
Holy shit.
-
The Grammy's may select their winners stupidly at times, but being nominated is a HUGE feather in the cap for DT. I mean gigantic. Seriously. So proud of the guys.
I must also admit that I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see a former member's reaction to this news. Heh. ;)
That aside though, just such tremendous news. Congratulations guys! Gonna be tough going up against Mastodon, Megadeth, Foo Fighters and...Sum 41 (lol), but still a nomination is a big, big deal. So cool.
-
Holy fucking shit! Im gonna cry!
-
Holy fucking shit! Im gonna cry!
lol itll be ok dude lol lol
-
I saw them post it on facebook and literally my reaction was just O_O.
This is awesome!
-
ARE YOU SHITTING ME? That is fantastic news! Not to be pessimistic, but I can't see any way they'd win for this kind of thing, but being nominated is a huge deal and hopefully will give them a bit of exposure. Congratulations DT!
-
That's cool. I mean, the Grammys are completely meaningless from any musical standpoint, but commercially it's a pretty big deal I suppose. Cool beans.
-
You suppose? Dude, it's a pretty big deal considering what genre they come from.
-
This will gain DT some new listeners, for sure. Great.
-
Should've gone to Adrenaline Mob.

You win the thread, Blob.
Brilliant! :rollin
-
Do I really have to be the first to point out the undoubtedly intentional structural similarities between On the Backs of Angels and Sum 41's "Blood in My Eyes"?
-
I must also admit that I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see a former member's reaction to this news. Heh. ;)
True :)
This is awesome news. No matter the outcome, being nominated can only help DT. This has been a great year in DT land. :metal
-
oh Dear...
I lost respect for the grammy awards long ago. Sometimes they nominate good shit in genre specific categories,,, but what they consider to be the overall bests are ridiculous.
I have this strange feeling that DT's gonna win.
-
This is cool news, though I can't help but laugh at the overly excited people because if this was merely a hypothetical thread the typical reaction would be some variation of "lolgrammys".
-
Do I really have to be the first to point out the undoubtedly intentional structural similarities between On the Backs of Angels and Sum 41's "Blood in My Eyes"?
I noticed this *immediately* upon my first listen and if it is a nugget then I guess its cool, but if they are desperately trying to rewrite Sum 41s past, then maybe not so much. I guess only David Prater knows....
-
I dunno guys, if Jeff Beck can win a grammy six times, I think DT have somewhat of a shot of actually winning this thing. Man it would be oh so sweet if they did :hefdaddy
-

No way, we would never be immature like that. :)
-
To me the Grammys mean absolutely nothing, but I understand the commercial implications of this and hope DT end up winning, and I'm sure to them it means something so congrats to the band.
-
Congrats to the guys, very awesome for them!
It seems the Grammys are finally getting it right... last year Iron Maiden wins a grammy, now hopefully DT. MY two favorite bands :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
It IS the best song nominated. Congrats to the boys. Long time coming!
-
Just saw John Petrucci's tweet on Twitter about this. So thrilled for the boys, it's about time. Hope they win but even they don't, it is great they are getting noticed. Definitely the best band to never win a Grammy. Just goes to show how pathetic these awards are. Nevertheless, we will all be rooting for them.
-
This is just so awesome! Just read it in their FB. So happy! :tup
-
This is fantastic. For DT to even be uttered in the same BREATH as the Foo Fighters in the biggest mainstream music awards show is amazing.
-
This is great news for the band.
-
Wow, congrats DT! :tup

Awesome, 'm stoked that they are getting recognition from popular circles, and not just from "best instrumentalist" polls. Couldn't be happier for the guys. If they win, then both of my favorite prog bands would have won a grammy, go figure.(Yes won for best instrumental, Cinema)
-
Wow! Awesome news for DT for sure!!! That's a pretty cool list. I may be a little biased but I really think DT should win though the competition is pretty solid. For some reason I have a feeling the Foo Fighters are gonna win though.
For the record (not too familiar) does "Performance" in the title of the award mean anything specific? Like live performance or video of said song? Or is it just basically the best song?
-
Devin Townsend was robbed.

I don't even remember making that thread... Well look like I know the answer to that question.
-
Curl of the Burl > OTBOA
But DT deserves some recognition. Should've happened back in 1992 or something, but better late than never.
-
I never cared about Grammy..... any kind of award for that matter.... Emmy, Oscar, and Tony.... doesn't mean much to me....
If DT gets the award, this won't show me anything but that the jury are finally getting open-minded and improving themselves music-taste-wise....
-

Basically all of this although I was Louisiana's greatest grocery bagger in 2000 before choking in the national finals in Dallas (the Adam's Mark hotel is quite nice btw :P ) so I've had somewhat of a positive experience with meaningless awards ceremonies. I'm just happy that something like this, in some very small way, will help DT be a tad less forgotten in the grand scheme of the last 20 years in mainstream American music.
-
agreed!
-
Curl of the Burl > OTBOA
lol no.
But it's pretty much guaranteed that Mastodon will win. It seems they have become the only acceptable/hip metal band these days.

Anyhow, this is terrific news. I wonder how Mikey is feeling right about now?

Awesome news!
Is this the first grammy nomination for DT?

Like others said, I don't care about the grammys but still congrats to DT! Awesome to see some prog metal in the limelight! (pun intended :D)

I think we all agree the grammy's are shit, but its awesome to see a great band recognized. If more of them were, then maybe the grammy's wouldn't be shit. :tick2:
-
This is great for DT's name brand recognition.

Crying? Maybe you're taking things a bit too far here....

Very nice news, I think that only Foo fighters and Megadeth can compete with Dream Theater. I hope they win, and I hope they appear at the event. Congratulations, guys. :tup
-

Dream Theater won't win because in the end its always a popularity contest, but its great they were recognized!
-
I'm really happy for the guys!
But I'm not sure if they stand a chance against the other bands.
Mastadon and Foo Fighters seems like bands that are more "hip". Those bands get played everday on a Norwegian radio channel called NRK P3, as the only rock/metal bands. In the same radio show they play everything from the mainstream world like Lady Gaga and Rihanna, and hipster music like Florence+ the machines, the kooks etc. I've never in my life heard DT on the radio. Also, both bands have been playing those songs on letterman.
But watching the views on youtube, the official releases of OTBOA got 2,2million and 600k views, while the most viewed video of curl of the burl is 360k. White Limo by Foo Fighters has two official videos with 2,8million and 700k views. Most viewed video by Sum 41's song is 290k and Megadeth's Public Enemy no.1 got 300k, they've also been nominated 9 times without winning!
Sorry for the messy post, just sharing some information about the popularity of the songs, which really doesn't matter! :P
Well, I hope DT gets this award, how cool wouldn't it be to see John Petrucci getting on that stage on live television?
-
Congratulations to Dream Theater for being nominated!
-
For the record (not too familiar) does "Performance" in the title of the award mean anything specific? Like live performance or video of said song? Or is it just basically the best song?
It's confusing, but I think I've figured it out. They Grammys have awards for Best "Song", "Record", "Album", and "Performance". As I understand it:
Best Song = Best written song. The award goes to the songwriter, and is supposed to not take the actual performance of the song into account
Best Record = Best song, as recorded. This award goes to the performer (and producer, recording engineer, and mixer).
Best Album = Same as Best Record, except it's for entire albums instead of individual songs.
Best Performance = Best Recorded Performance. Award goes to the performer. It can be for either a song or an album, but it seems like it's almost always for songs, except maybe in the Classical field.
-
I'm really happy for the guys!
But I'm not sure if they stand a chance against the other bands.
You're probably right, but, sometimes the Grammys rise above simple popularity contests. Arcade Fire won album of the year last year, despite being up against much more popular acts.
Well, I hope DT gets this award, how cool wouldn't it be to see John Petrucci getting on that stage on live television?
Very cool, although it seems like The Grammys have gone to a format of mostly performances and don't show all the awards being given out. So, I'm not sure if Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance is one of the awards we will actually see presented on television.
-

Oh, I didn't know that. I'm from Norway, so I've never bothered watching those things, as well as I don't like most of the music presented.
-
By the way - Mastadon SUCKS. Not their music (although I don't like their music, either), but them as people. Someone posted on my Facebook wall an interview in which they totally ragged on DT, saying that DT's clothes are "gay" and that they have a "little Chinese girl playing bass." That band is a bunch of losers. Even if DT weren't nominated, I'd want them to lose.

I really dislike Mastodon's music, I've seen the three times. They warmed up for both metallica and maiden, so I had to sit through. Then I gave them a third chance at the Roskilde Festival, where they were headlining. In my ears, it's horrible. If not DT, I really hope for Foo Fighters
-
Congrats to DT! I consider "On the Backs of Angels" about the fourth best song on the album, so it's slightly weird to see it nominated. But still awesome, of course!
-
Congrats to DT! I consider "On the Backs of Angels" about the fourth best song on the album, so it's slightly weird to see it nominated. But still awesome, of course!
Since it's more about popularity, it makes sense that the song chosen is the single, which is what has the exposure, and the music video. I'm not sure if there's any requirement that it's released as a single, or has a music video, but it makes sense even though I agree it's not the strongest song on the album.
You know what else makes it weird to see nominated? That it's an almost 9 minute song, that is unedited for the music video.

From what I've read, the Grammy Awards is on February 12th and Dream Theater will be playing in Esch-sur-Alzette, LUX that day. If they win, I wonder who will be there to accept the award.
-
Pretty sweet!
Steven Wilson also got nominated for Best Surround Sound Album! :)
Also, plenty of other good artists got nominated this year as well: Radiohead, Mumford and Sons, Wilco, Jeff Beck, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab, etc.
The Grammys stink, but it is at least still nice to see recognition for some great artists!

No. The presenter would accept on their behalf, and they would get the award later.

I dunno guys, if Jeff Beck can win a grammy six times, I think DT have somewhat of a shot of actually winning this thing.
On the other hand, if Joe Satriani can lose 15 times out of 15 nominations... ;)
-
the @dreamtheaternet tweet announcing the nomination was one of the top trending tweets worldwide earlier today
-
The DT guys are really excited and psyched about this, so we should drop the lolgrammys shit because this actually means something to them. Maybe not to us, but whatever.
-
After so many years... Almost to good to be true, and i still think they are too good to get a grammy. Anyway i would love to see them get it.
-
Is there a way to get tickets to the Grammy event? I'm in NY, but maybe some California fans might want to go and support the band decked out in DT gear.
-
I'm not intentionally picking on any specific person with this, but I think it's extremely humorous how everyone says things like:
They'll never be nominated because the Grammys are just a pop music circle jerk.
I'm all for DT getting more publicity and reaching a higher echelon of success, but I'd rather it be in a more dignified way.
Source (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=10088.msg330659#msg330659)
Grammys are garbage.
Source (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=10088.msg330696#msg330696)
DT could be nominated for a sound award like Porcupine Tree, but it's very unlikely they'll win one of the big awards.
Except that DT's stuff never "sounds" even close to as good as PT's does. :p
But yeah, the Grammys blow. I am pretty sure most knowledgeable music fans know this.
Source (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=10088.msg330705#msg330705)
What's wrong with the Grammys? Is it just something cool for prog snobs to hate?
Not. It's something shitty that everyone should hate.
Source (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=10088.msg330747#msg330747)
Honestly, I couldn't care less about DT winning a Grammy or getting nominated for it.

BEFORE Dream Theater gets nominated, then, once Dream Theater gets nominated, well, see: This Thread :lol
-
My pants were, indeed, tight when i heard the news about the Grammys.
Im really happy for the guys!
-
I'll tell you this, this will be the ONLY reason I watch the grammys this year.
-
The only thing that im curious about I that, would they be at the ceremony? If I'm not mistaking they will be on tour around those dates. ???
-

I think most here would still agree that the Grammys blow. It's just nice to see DT and other artists some of us like get some recognition. If a nomination gets some people who only pay attention to what's on the radio and awards shows to check out DT and they get new fans because of it, that is a good thing.

Yes yes yes exactly this!
-
Fantastic news, might be the only reason to watch 10 minutes of the Grammy's this year.
And White Limo? Really? Of all the songs on that album?
-
Has anyone here even heard OTBOA on the radio?
Better question: doesn't anyone here even listen to the radio?
haha
-
Uh, what is this "radio" thing of which you speak? ;D
So excited for the guys--I almost didn't believe it when I first heard it last night. :tup

I'm not intentionally picking on any specific person with this, but I think it's extremely humorous how everyone says things like:
The Grammys have gone seriously downhill in the past 20 years, and most people who listen to anything other than radio-friendly schlock know that, thus we tend to rag on The Grammys, those who nominate and vote, and the whole process.
This does not change the fact that it will still bring some recognition to Dream Theater, which is a good thing, and it was quite a surprise that they would actually be nominated.
Also, note that most comments in this thread, when mentioning The Grammys, still consider them pretty much a joke and a popularity contest, so that hasn't really changed.
-

I don't mean to over think things, but why do you think "On the Backs of Angels" is the song to finally get DT a nomination? What is it about this song and the current state of the music industry that resulted in "OTBoA" getting a nod? In short, my question is: Why now and why "OTBoA"?
I'm obviously thrilled for DT's nomination. I'm just trying to get a better grasp on the rationale behind it because I'm annoying like that.
-
Actually, I was wondering the same thing. How in the heck did they even cop a nomination, and why this song?
-
I enjoy the Grammys...I think they're fun. *shrug* Anyway, there's always a chance DT could win. Last year some random-ass jazz bassist/songwriter nobody ever heard of won Best New Artist over Bieber.
I do think Curl of the Burl is the best song in that list, though.
-

Anomalies like the random-ass jazz musician aside, the Grammys truly are a popularity contest, and DT has recently found some sort of popularity among the mainstream crowd (Rock Band and whatnot). So, DT has just kind of been sitting in metal America's collective consciousness for a while, especially with the controversy surrounding MP, and with OTBOA, we have a strong single that really shows what DT is all about.
In short: DT is becoming a bit cooler and a bit more universally respected and the folks at the Grammys decided to give DT their dues.

Why now is simple -- DT's popularity has grown tremendously over the years, they are on a big label for this genre of music (hard rock/heavy metal), and this genre of music is more accessible these days in comparison to the past, given online media, ways to watch videos and of course, XM satellite radio.
Why OtBoA? -- I know it is like your fourth or fifth favorite, but it garnered a lot of attention because of all the drama with MP leaving. I also think it's a good song, very friendly to mainstream listeners to a degree, etc.
But trying to figure out the rationale of the Grammy Award nominators can you drive you crazy. But the above is likely a couple of factors.

I have the opportunity to go to the Grammys this year. Might be worth it :metal:
To me the Grammys mean absolutely nothing, but I understand the commercial implications of this and hope DT end up winning, and I'm sure to them it means something so congrats to the band.
This ^
-
This will be fun to see on TV when they do this category
I'd be SHOCKED if this award is awarded on television. I thought I read somewhere that rock alone isn't given much attention anymore at this shindig, and as such, it is hard to imagine them dedicating two minutes to an award on hard rock/metal. It will likely be one of those awards that the winner is mentioned while they gloss over another handful or so of awards that also aren't getting awarded on the telecast.
-
I'm trying to remember the last time they had any bands from this category on the television broadcast of the Grammys.....was it Metallica maybe?
-
It might not have been a year where they were nominated under that category, but I can totally see Foo Fighters being a band that would get asked to play at the Grammys.
-
The Foos probably will play. They are huge.
-
It might not have been a year where they were nominated under that category, but I can totally see Foo Fighters being a band that would get asked to play at the Grammys.
That would be the most likely band to perform....and win. I rarely ever watch the Grammy's, can't remember the last time I did...but I'm sure I heard that they've performed on the Grammy's before.
It's unfortunate for DT and the other bands that the Foo Fighters are nominated in that category because they'll most likely win it due to their popularity. Not that they suck or anything...I like 90% of thier songs. But the issue I think that most of us have with the Grammy's is that it's pretty much like the 'Golden Glove' awards in baseball.....the people/bands who actually deserve the award are rarely even recoginized and when they are they don't win.
Still think it'd be freakin' awesome if DT won that.....it'd be incredible. I hope that the Grammy's are filmed on a different night to give the guys a chance to be there in person.
-
Congrats to DT.
At first, I assumed that the Foo Fighters would definitely win, but then I went to the actual page and saw that the Foo Fighters are also up for Best Rock Performance for 'Walk'. So, the Foos could win in that category, and factoring them out, DT has a legitimate shot.
-
I'm trying to remember the last time they had any bands from this category on the television broadcast of the Grammys.....was it Metallica maybe?
System of a Down won it a few years back for BYOB. I'm pretty sure that was broadcasted.
-
I'm just glad Jethro Tull wasn't nominated this year.
-
And incidentally, this is the first time that the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" award has existed since Jethro Tull won...
-
I'm just glad Jethro Tull wasn't nominated this year.
lol
-
Congrats!
-
I have a feeling that if DT wasn't nominated many would just be sayings things like "Pfft Grammys are a joke anyway, DT doesn't need them"
But since they were nominated....
(just imo)
Congratulations to DT anyway.
-
Ironic, I have a feeling that if DT wasn't nominated you would all just be sayings things like "Pfft Grammys are a joke anyway, DT doesn't need them"
But since they were nominated....
(just imo)
And nobody has said otherwise to that statement. Despite how little people think of the Grammys, and the fact DT obviously don't need them (proven by their continued success for over 20 years without their recognition), we're still happy for DT getting noticed by a mainstream awards show, and getting some deserved exposure.
I'm happy for them because it's a nice thing to happen for them in their career, not because I think highly of the award itself or because it matters at all. I think people have chosen to focus on the positive aspects of this, rather than their opinion of the Grammys itself.
-
If DT wins the grammy... Well, let's just say I'll probably yell loud enough for the neighbors to hear. :hefdaddy

THIS^ exactly how I feel about this recognition. And if the guys are genuinely excited about it, then that is enough for me. Great job DT!

Next addition to Zepp's collection: DT's grammy?
-
To the people saying this:
"If DT weren't nominated, you'd be calling the Grammys crap."
Guess what? YOU'RE RIGHT. And, do you want to know why? Let's actually use our brains for a moment. DT has been around since 1989. Okay, their first real single was Pull Me Under, so we'll say 1992, just for the sake of argument. That's almost twenty years. Images & Words is a GROUNDBREAKING MASTERPIECE. Then, there was Awake. Another masterpiece. Then, there was A Change of Seasons, then SFAM, two more masterpieces. Any Grammy nominations there? Hmmmmm? Oh, right - NO. No, there weren't.
It took nearly TWENTY YEARS for the Grammy folks to even take notice of a band that has written some of the most amazing music of the past quarter century and, for a while, it didn't look like they were ever going to be nominated for anything. No one would have ever thought in a million years that they'd be nominated for a Grammy.
So, my point is this: yeah, it might seem "hypocritical" to be excited that they're nominated when most of us bashed the Grammys before. But, like I said, the Grammys have been a JOKE for the past ten-twenty years. Why WOULDN'T we have bashed them? Plus, maybe some of us still think they're a joke, but are just happy DT is getting SOME exposure. Ever think of that?
Oh, and they haven't won yet.
-
If it's announced live the Foo Fighters will be the winner, you just watch. Also is this the first Grammy nomination for DT?
-
I'm not intentionally picking on any specific person with this, but I think it's extremely humorous how everyone says things like:
They'll never be nominated because the Grammys are just a pop music circle jerk.
I'm all for DT getting more publicity and reaching a higher echelon of success, but I'd rather it be in a more dignified way.

What's wrong with the Grammys? Is it just something cool for prog snobs to hate?
Not. It's something shitty that everyone should hate.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about DT winning a Grammy or getting nominated for it.

This. There's no way that DT could suck bad enough to win a grammy. :lol

The people who are involved with the Grammys are totally clueless, and always have been. Nothing but rap and crap.

BEFORE Dream Theater gets nominated, then, once Dream Theater gets nominated, well, see: This Thread :lol
Wow, nice job in uncovering people's lies, Dr. House!

To the people saying this:

Guess what? YOU'RE RIGHT.
...
Oh, and they haven't won yet.
Even if DT wins, I'll still be calling the Grammy Awards crap. They are demonstrably worthless as awards themselves, except in terms of giving a band exposure which isn't really about the award.

Just because you like DT that much (which isn't wrong) doesn't mean every major award ceremony should share your sentiments. Prog (metal/rock) isn't the type of thing that gets recognized there much. Real talk.
-
I have a feeling that if DT wasn't nominated many would just be sayings things like "Pfft Grammys are a joke anyway, DT doesn't need them"
But since they were nominated....
Kind of like PT last year an hour before the show it was like: YEAH, Grammy Awards! and then they didn't win and it was like: Who the hell cares about the Grammy Awards?
But anyway, it's obviously a sign that there is always something new out there to achieve even if it wasn't really a goal.
-
Concerning not liking the Grammy's.....then all of a sudden liking them because DT has been nominated:
the reason I am happy has really everything to do with how psyched the DT guys are and what it appears to mean to them. I don't think it's a big secret how the majority of 'us' view the Grammy's....and rightfully so. IMO it rewards mediocre music and popularity and not the actualy 'best' but hey that's just the way it is, Oh well. BUT...the fact that DT has finally been publicly recognized by the 'mainstream' in the music industry is AWESOME and DESERVED IMO. I feel I can still hold my opinion about the Grammy's and be happy/excited for DT and the gang without being overly hypocritical.
I hope they win...I really do.....If they don't......then the Grammy's :censored suck!!!!!
-
I'm just proud of DT for being nominated for a Grammy without having to sell out. And I'm SUPER proud of JP, because he wrote the damn song. Good for JP. :)
-
Will this award actually be handed out during the televised broadcast?
-
Will this award actually be handed out during the televised broadcast?
Very, very unlikely. The announcement of the winner will pop up as a little text thing at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds when going to or coming back from commercial. After all, they need to save time for all that wonderful scripted banter.
-
Yeah, only the "important" awards actually get shown on the broadcast. The rest is performances, commercials, and plenty of that witty banter.

Best Grammy moment ever:
Danny: "I'd like to thank my parents for putting up with the cacophony I created for 15 or 20 years, Bientje, and Satan."
Justin: "I want to thank Alex Grey for doing our artwork and my mom for doing my dad."
Congrats DT! I haven't watched the grammy's in a very long time.

My favorite Grammy moment was---
In accepting Soundgarden's "Best Metal Performance" award
Chris Cornell: We're not gonna leave the stage tonight until you tell us we're Heavy Metal. :lol

DT changed their concert scheduled so they could attend the Grammys. If I lived in California, I'd so hunt down a ticket to go and support them. Anyone on the westcoast gonna go?

Nope. As alluded to earlier, Metallica lost to Jethro Tull for the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental" in 1989. And they were one of the performers that night.
-
The Jethro Tull song came out way earlier right? Like 10 or 15 years? Can't remember the details. That page was ripped out of my mental encyclopedia.
-
No, it was for the Tull album Crest of a Knave, which was released in late '87 and IS a good album.
-
Oh, lol I was way off.
-
Hmmm why would DT move their tour dates just to attend the grammy's? Especially when there's very little chance they will win. I think it very possible they're gonna perform!

Just being nominated seems to mean a lot to them, since they've never been before. Personally, if I was in their position, I'd want to rearrange my schedule so I could attend, even if I knew I wasn't going to win, just for the sake of being there as a nominee.

They are NOT going to perform. That is 100% certain.

Supposed to be read "these oafs"; it's funny to me that you went the other way.
But, yes, my knowledge isn't based on any Prisoner-style information, but it's just common sense to me. This is DT's first nomination. DT isn't a popular band among the Grammys' attenders. DT doesn't have any easily digestible short songs (that are truly DT in style, anyway), and it's mostly sugar-coated pop bands and the more popular rock bands that are invited to play anyway. Bands usually have their concert schedules determined several months in advance, and I sincerely doubt DT wouldn't already know about it if the folks at the Grammys were planning to invite DT to play.
What I mean to say when I express my 100% certainty is that it just doesn't make any sense for them to be performing. It is not a strange thing that DT are attending just because they were nominated, as suggested above.
Instead of saying "It is 100% certain that DT will not play", I should say "If DT performs at the Grammys, I will take a video of myself eating my underwear and wire the contents of my bank account to Hef".

I read it as "the seoafs" for a long time, figuring that a seaof is just something I'd never heard of, and I shouldn't worry about it. At some point I parsed it again and got "these oafs", but I figured I'd take a jab at you and your 100% certainty just for the hell of it. Mostly to get a reaction and explanation from you (which worked - ha!) just in case you actually know somebody in the biz and that's why you were 100% certain. We do have people around here who personally know members of DT, Rush, etc.
I agree that it doesn't make any sense that they'd be asked to play, but I don't know jack about what's popular. Last year Arcade Fire both played and won, and I'd never heard of them, but I just figured they were some band I'd never heard of. Turns out that more than a few people went "Who?" but again, I wouldn't know.
-
Well, some people never heard of arsenic either. They thumbed their nose at the "arsenic cocktails" handed to them at the party that fateful night, and drank deeply, thinking, "eh, it's nothing I've ever heard of, so why worry about it?" Sadly, that was one of the last thoughts they had. Beware the Seoaf! Bewaaaaaaaare!

At this point, it's up to DT.
However, this thought did occur to me today. Anyone who wants to determine the likelihood of DT playing at the Grammys can do so very easily with a bit of detective work (though I'm not going to do it myself because I'm already certain they're not going to play).
If DT were invited to play at the Grammys just now (which is, again, not a likelihood in my view), it's likely they were asked to play at the same time that a bunch of other bands were asked to play. Let's assume that this is the case. With that assumption in place, we also assume that this year is not an anomaly, and that invitations to play at the Grammys are usually given at this time of year. So, bands -- who, once again, determine their concert schedules several months in advance -- who are invited should be cancelling February shows in December as well.
SO: If someone found a few examples of bands that A) played at the Grammys in the last couple years, B) were supposed to be on tour that winter, and C) cancelled the shows on or around the date of the Grammys in the preceding December, this would be evidence for DT's playing at the Grammys (though not proof of it). Meanwhile, if no examples of this are able to be found, we can assume that our initial premise -- that bands are usually invited to play at the Grammys in December -- was faulty, that bands are usually given enough advance notice to schedule their tours when they play the Grammys, and that DT are genuinely just there to attend the ceremony as nominees.
If someone wants to take that train of thought somewhere and dig up some articles, we'd have some more convincing evidence, but, again, I sincerely doubt they'll be playing. It's just a ridiculous thought to me.
-
If by some snowballs chance in hell they do play, where and how would they cut the song, they obviously couldn't play all 8+ minutes of it, that would lose half the viewership.
-
Well... first off all they could cut some of the final repeated chorus that never seems to end
-
AAAAAAAA Riiiiitte of Passsaaaagggee.
Oh wait, it's the other single.
I'd love them to perform, but on the other hand I'd just love them to just sit there as well. Looking badass, watching Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber perform, and just smirking and glancing to each other.
-
If they perform (which I agree is unlikely), I would imagine it would be the entire song. The whole song is nominated, not an edited version. It's a long broadcast, there will be room.
-
I suspect they are going for the event of it all and maybe to schmooze a bit with other musicians, perhaps ones they haven't met before, as well as music critics and others in the industry. It's never a bad thing to make yourself known to more people in the industry. :tup :tup

-
Some people have their heads in the clouds. It's unfortunate, but the idea of a progressive metal band playing a song (let alone a full 8-minute song like some have suggested) is ludicrous. It would never happen. Some people must not be familiar with what the Grammys actually are.

I'm sure that if he only said that he congratulated them personally everybody would say "AND DID THEY RESPOND YOU? WHAT HAPPENED?" and stuff like that, so it would very much be the same.

Exactly. The classy thing to do....which I'm fully convinced now that MP has forgotten what 'class' is.....would have been just mention 'I sent everyone an e-mail congratulating them on their Grammy Nomination'. ......that's it. No need to say 'but 2 didnt' answer' other than to try and portray himself as some kind of great dude for sending the e-mails and trying to make them look bad.
-
I will kill myself if they perform at the Grammys.
Quoted for life.
-
If 3 guys responded to MP's congrats, no matter which 3 guys, why accuse JP of plagiarism a short time later? Really strange. MP didn't just burn a bridge with JP, he went nuclear. People typically don't do that if they hope to rebuild friendships.

Taking the hypothetical that he realized mentioning how many responded wouldn't help him, he'd also realize answering that question would be similarly unhelpful.

From this interview today: https://www.noisecreep.com/2012/01/03/dream-theater-band-interview/
It was the first song we wrote for the album, which is kind of nice, but what I think I'm most proud of is the fact that it's the full version of the song. Not a radio edit, but the full nine minutes, which is just the way we want our music to be heard," Petrucci exclaims.
Hadn't thought of it like that. Now that is nice.

""It started to almost look like crowds at a Rush concert" the vocalist says. "I'd say that the age range was from about 15 to 65 – and more girls too." He started to joke, "Why couldn't this have happened 25 years earlier, when we were still good looking [laughter]?"
:lol
Thanks for the link!

Lets place bets on who didnt respond!
JM and JLB I say :p
Damnit! You took the words right outta my mouth!! haha.
Look, guys! You are doing exactly what MP wants you to do : speculate on who it was who didn't answer. Clever move from him, albeit a dick move! As Blob said, if it had been sincere, MP wouldn't have mentioned who answered and who didn't.
B.Lee
I guess you two will be pissed when MP is back in the saddle in less then two years. MP was just answering a question from a fan.
-
I don't know that any rational person would be "pissed" if and when MP is "back in the saddle." I don't think anyone is rooting for him to fail. That's not the issue at all. The issue is that his response (like many of his communications after leaving DT) was inappropriate.

Any reason why you think MP will be back in under two years?
-
At this point I'd be surprised if MP is ever back in the proverbial saddle. It's just not realistic given everything that's happened.
If DT wasn't going to fire Mangini last year when Portnoy asked to be let back in the band, they sure as hell aren't going to do it now or years from now.
On topic: MP seriously needs to learn to pick his battles. I've never been to his forum, but it's notorious for the spontaneous deletion of threads that aren't in line with his views. Of all the posts to not only keep but respond to, he picks this one, while dropping some extraneous and unnecessary information which (either inadvertently or purposely) made DT look bad?
Let's say he did just say "I sent all the members of DT a congratulatory email." The objection is:
I'm sure that if he only said that he congratulated them personally everybody would say "AND DID THEY RESPOND YOU? WHAT HAPPENED?" and stuff like that, so it would very much be the same.
He's not obligated to answer that question. He doesn't have to say anything at all. If he doesn't respond people will just think he's busy, and he is a busy guy. This is just another example of MP not knowing when to keep his mouth shut.

A lack of critical thought, I'd say.

I think you misunderstood. By "back in the saddle," I don't think he meant "back in DT." I think he just meant in terms of back to being a busy, sought-after, gainfully-employed drummer.

That's possible. metropofreak and Jason above seemed to take it the same way I did, but I'll wait for some clarification from coffees.

https://www.grammy.com/blogs/first-time-grammy-nominees-dream-theater
(The Recording Academy asked some of this year's first-time GRAMMY nominees to collect their thoughts and share what it feels like to be nominated for a GRAMMY.)
Wow! Could this really be happening? That was my first thought when I heard the news that Dream Theater had just been nominated for our first GRAMMY. It still makes me smile every time I think about it and the reality of receiving such an honor still hasn't set in. Being in a band who writes 20-minute-long prog-rock epics about topics that aren't exactly radio-friendly, I never would have thought that we'd ever be nominated and the thrill still hasn't worn off.
I was on a plane to California the evening the nominees were announced and as a Recording Academy member and music fan I was bummed that I was missing the telecast, as I always look forward to seeing who receives the year's honors.
I was at baggage claim when I got the call from our manager and all I wanted to do was scream out and dance in celebration. Sharing the news with my wife and kids, bandmates, family, and friends was an incredible moment and one I'll always remember.
The cool thing is that "On The Backs Of Angels" was the first song we wrote for the A Dramatic Turn Of Events album and has only been released in its almost 9-minute original form. Knowing that a song that originated as an acoustic guitar idea written in front of my fireplace at home is now among those songs nominated this year just blows me away.
Based on the nominees in our category, I'd be surprised if we won but I'm still incredibly honored and humbled by the nomination. I'm looking forward to an amazing night on Feb. 12!
— John Petrucci
I was sitting in a Japanese restaurant in San Diego with my very good friend, author Chris Epting, when my cell phone rang. It was John Petrucci. "Jordan, we got a GRAMMY nomination" were the words out of his mouth! Chris looked at me, knowing from my expression that I just heard some really important news. Receiving a GRAMMY nod is not an everyday experience and it kinda blew me away. John was very excited as well. Leading up to this point had already been an amazing whirlwind year for us with our new drummer Mike Mangini, our new album, A Dramatic Turn Of Events, and some very strong shows to support it.
Although we put a lot of care into all the music we create, we knew that this particular album was gonna be scrutinized and a really important step in our career! Receiving this nomination for the song "On The Backs Of Angels" has been so rewarding for us on many levels, as musicians who have all spent countless hours focusing on each of our instruments, as well as band members who have worked together for years, both in the studio and on the road.
Over a long period of time Dream Theater has managed to create a big name for ourselves around the world, but never have crossed over to any kind of real mainstream notoriety. Although I am always grateful to have a life filled with music, as well as the rare ability to be able to earn a living doing it, this GRAMMY nomination just gives me and my band a real-world pride and connection that is deep and meaningful.
As I write this, we are in Finland rehearsing and getting ready to embark on an extensive European tour with a break in the middle to travel back to the United States to attend the GRAMMY Awards show. For musicians who have literally spent their lives practicing, this nomination is a real encouragement for all of us!

If the guys in the band are that happy about winning a Grammy, I'm that happy for them getting it.
-
Even though I can almost guarantee they won't win (I'm guessing the Foo Fighters will win), I'm really glad Dream Theater is nominated. Unfortunately these sorts of awards are popularity contests so the winners just tend to be the band who is the best known rather than the band that is most deserving.
-
Being nominated is still a huge honor. Rolling Stone, the R&R HoF and the Grammys HATE prog rock, with a passion. For them to nominate a prog band, for a legitimate song that wasn't aspiring to get mainstream attention, and a NINE MINUTE song at that, isn't just a big honor... it defies logic. There are a lot of bands that seek mainstream success. Dream Theater was seeking artistic fulfillment, and incidentally got something that that a lot of heavy bands were selling out to get.
-

The foos are nominated for lots of other awards. And white limo, which is nominated in the same category as DT, is the worst song on wasting light(imho, but still.) I think the foos are more likely to win one of the other awards (like the one for walk, for instance). I think there is a good chance that DT will win.
-
Um, the Grammys aren't always a popularity contest. Remember last year? Esperanza Spalding?

The Grammys have these moments from time to time where their decisions actually make sense. It's very rare.
-
I think OTBOA is good enough to win. That's fair enough to make sense.
*crosses fingers*
-
I'll be the lone guy outside Staples Center on Sunday with a Dream Theater sign. Of course, other DTers are welcome to join in the show of support.
-
JLB has stated that he has a good feeling about it. I only hope that if they don’t get it, they won't be too disappointed.
Sure OTBOA is good enough to win, the question are the Grammys good enough to notice it?
Personally I could not care less for the Grammys but it would be great for DT to get it for all the media attention they could get. There are still a lot of potential fans that are not “lucky” enough to know their music. For that reasons I hope we get to hear the speech John has been preparing lately.
-
Wow, totally missed this. When's the ceremony? Would be increddible if they'd win....I'll be keeping my fingers crossed...
-
While i don't really care for the Grammys, i hope DT will get it, and i can't wait to see MP's reaction if this actually happens. :hat

Probably yes, i think all the other nominees' songs are singles as well, though i might be wrong.

I'm also going to predict that the Foo Fighters will win. Most of the time (no always, just most) when an artist performs they win. I'm also really hoping I'm wrong.
-
Metallica was also up for the hard rock/metal award the first year it was awarded, and they performed. Can't remember who won though. >_> :lol
-
I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but it would be nice if they won a Grammy award.
-
I only hope that if they don’t get it, they won't be too disappointed.
JP has said that he doesn't believe they'll win but he's happy to be at the awards nonetheless.

I'm working that night, someone please be sure to record it so I can see their reactions just in case they win.

I had the opportunity to go to the Grammy's this year... but turned it down before I heard of the nomination.
-
Do you guys know if they air the Hard Rock/Metal category? Like if someone actually goes up to the podium and call out a winner?
I remember once I was watching the Grammies, I think the commentator just sort of announced the winner for the Hard Rock/Metal category in like 5-10 seconds. I could be wrong though.
-
I was wondering the same thing. My assumption was the award would not air until I saw people here talking about it.
-
No whats going to happen is once DT wins (They will, you'll see!!1/) they will all be asked to all come up on stage. After the 10 minute standing ovation they will unveil a secret stage with all their instruments and and they will play On The Backs of Angels live for the 100+ million people watching. Afterwards, there will be another 10 minute standing ovation with a demand of an encore. This is where a full symphony will be unveiled next and they will play A Change of Seasons in its entirety.
Remember Bill and Teds excellent adventure? Remember how they were considered heros in the future? It's gonna be just like that. You'll see.

Why do you hope they aren't going? It's probably a cool experience even if you don't like the awards. Besides, this is their business. Perhaps going isn't that beneficial to them, but not going certainly isn't. They might get some exposure by going..
-
It definitely won't be presented during the show. Iron Maiden won a year or two ago, and they got a 15 second mention while coming back from a commercial.
It couldn't hurt for them to attend anyway. In any industry, mingling like that is basically never a bad thing, and can form some great connections.
-
Exactly what was said in the two previous posts. They have already made arrangements in their tour schedule to be there. Of course they will go.
-
oh bloody hell yes they will... they are far more excited about this than we are.. non-surprisingly....
-
Yeah they probably just wanna go to... well "be there" and I would do the same.

JMX in all black. :o
-
Seeing that pic, all of a sudden I want them to win really badly.
-
Also, Mangini must be on cloud 9 now. Joining the band (his first actual band), successful album and tour, and now at the Grammies? Even if they don't win, that must feel fascinating to him.
-
What stream could I see DT get their award on?
-
That's an incredible photo, I'm so happy for the guys. :metal

too bad, mastodon or foo fighter will win the award, even if JP is a member of NARAS...
-
Nop. I've got a good tingle in my balls it'll be the DT.

I want Mangini's jacket.
-
Soooo, how long is this show going to be? Does anyone know?

Nop. I've got a good tingle in my balls it'll be the DT.
I got a similar tingle.
TINGLES UNITE
Well, I guess that could be testicular cancer, but at 20, that's unlikely at this point in time.

NICE!

JP doesn't look as intimidating as usual and JM is in all black (no surprise there). MM looks pretty awesome as well.

Congratulations to Dream Theater for being nominated for the first time, here's to a few more nominations and hopefully an award someday. :metal

hadn't seen that ...
hahahahahahahahahhaa
Interviewer: "Is there anyone you would like to see performing tonight?"
Turns to JP: *shakes head*
Turns to the rest of the band: *awkward silence*
JLB comes in and rescues the day with "err....Coldplay!"
*MM visibly laughing in the background*
ahahaha such a funny video - looked quite awkward throughout but still, regardless, hopefully they're having a good time despite not picking it up.

DT: "........"

Awkward. The interviewer so totally knew how they were.
:lol
-
Hahahahaha that was awkward but nice, they feel very genuine. I hope they're having fun regardless of not winning
-
Bummer, I was hoping they would pull it off, I had a couple choice smart assed texts I was waiting to fire off to friends who have been ripping on DT for ages.
-
I was totally waiting for her to turn to Myung :lol
-
Totally bummed :'( Was really hoping for the 'upset'! At least they lost to the Foo Fighters. Had they given it to any of those other bands and not DT I'd be ticked!
-

oh my god JR :rollin :rollin :rollin
-
It was funny to see JP out of his element and actually seem a little awkward in that interview. Just normal folks enjoying the moment.
-
It's the grammys whom else does the obvious. You've got the one who is definite not winner, 3 I could see it, then the winner who is the most popular one.
But I am glad they went, I would also have went to actually witness it, backstage non the less.
-
What a great video. Definitely a fish out of water.
Would have been nice to see DT win, but it is not the least bit surprising that Foo Fighters won, so I'm fine with that. Here's to next album getting another nomination!
-

This indeed. I think it's awesome they were able to fly in to the Grammy's, as nominees, during a tour in another continent, for their first appearance at the Grammy's. Definitely cool.
-
Only Jordan & James seem to be at ease with the occasion from the interview..Mangini is smaller than I thought..You cant tell behind that kit can ya...he smiles all the way thru..Just like at Manchester...he must be one happy dude..Petrucci looks like a fish out of water..and Myung is being Myung!!
-
It's not that I don't like the Foo Fighters or that I think they don't deserve their success or anything, but we all know that they won on the sole fact that they are the Foo Fighters. Not because their song was the best or whatever. They only won because they are the Foo Fighters. In my opinion, Dream Theater was robbed... I was expecting the Foo Fighters to win, but DT still got robbed.
-
DT definitely took us to another level in terms of the experience we have as fans.... Me happy and proud :)

Absolutely agree! Can't stop smiling tonight :) And the picture with the guys in their black suits is open for a few hours now :) Awesome!
-
It was a lonely, frosty cold vigil outside Staples Center this evening. I stood at the front of the police baricade with my DT sign unfurled in all its glory. Below a hand drawn DT logo, the sign read:
"The Faithful Live Awake. Congratulations on your 2011 Grammy Nomination!"
The crowd gathered behind me. I was in perfect position to witness all the Grammy guests as they funneled from the ceremony to the afterparty at Nokia next door. Thousands of gowns and tuxedos. A three and 1/2 hour vigil, but alas, no sightings of the Cap, Bear, Wiz, Ninja or Genie.
Oddly enough, a Japanese TV crew apporached me to ask me on air what I thought of the Whitney Houston death. I declined to comment.
-
I am very proud of the guys. But i have to disagree with them ;). It's actually not an honor for them to be there, it's an honor for the Grammys to have them there, taking into account that they were in the middle of a tour in a different continent and that they are by far the best musicians at the ceremony.
It's been a lot of years delivering wonderful music to their fans, not falling into trying to get commercial success just by the sake of money. I hope they get another nomination with their next album, not that I care if they get the nomination or even the award but they surely deserve more media exposure. There are still a lot of potential fans that don't even know they exist.

That interviewer had no idea who they were and she probably looked at Myung and thought "Ooh, Asian guy. He might not speak English."
Was a pretty awkward interview and most of it wasn't the DT boys fault. JR looks pretty comfortable in front of the cameras, although looking like a pimp like he did would make anyone comfortable.

Exactly...even better, because they all (except for Myung, the ninja) turned out to be such eloquent interviewees... very good job by the guys.
-
That interview is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time
-
sorry if this has been posted:
"We got it!" Grohl said. "I feel so bad for the Dream Theater guy, because they actually had a metal performance, we didn't, but it's awesome. That's kind of the coolest song we've ever written," he said of the edgy "White Limo."

:lol
Was that a compliment?
-
"The Dream Theater guy"? Which?
-
That was a compliment. Well, yeah, you can't blame him for not knowing that the front man of DT (if they have one) isn't 'The Dream Theater guy'.
The point is that he names them to all of his fans, and to all of MTV, that's cool.
-
i think that's an MTV typo. "because they actually had a metal performance."
Dave is a cool dude, i think he's basically saying he doesnt deserve it, but DT really does
-
I don't care that he didn't seem to know or care who DT were, or whether or not it was a compliment (seemed to be). Having Grohl mention DT is a good thing. This is what a lot of the excitement for DT and us as fans was with the Grammys - the mainstream exposure, not just about winning.

Almost certainly a typo.
-
I'll back up Dave Grohl. He genuinely is a nice guy and I am pretty sure the "Dream Theater guy" thing is just a typo. As others have said, within the musical community (especially the rock circles) DT would be very well respected.
-
David Grohl is one of the coolest guys in the business. And this completely reinforces it. If anyone, anyone, has an issue with Grohl, they need to promptly be admitted to the nearest looney-bin.
-
Could have meant "Dream Theater guys" and then it would sound alright. It has to be a typo.
-
These Guys seem Genuine on the Video.
Notice Myung trying to avoid eye contact with the female .
But for them it's Great just to be nominated . Kudos
-
My respect for Dave Grohl has shot up a lot, not that I didn't like him in the first place. Even before his comment, I wasn't mad that Foo Fighters won.
Had it been a band like Nickelbag or Strained, it'd be a different story.
-
so I just listened to the song that Foo Fighters won with...
seriously? haven't really minded what they've put out in the past but that's just -.- , not completely sure I agree with the winner but what am I going to do about it ;)
Regardless, still cool of him to make that comment.
-
im mad that DT flew out to be there, and we only have 1 photo, 1 video, and a dave grohl quote to show for it. no one else interviewed them?
-
Almost certainly a typo.
No, watch the video link, he says Dream Theater guy
-
I like how the interviewer (for the FFs) was a sarcastic jackass. "You beat DREAM THEATER HAHAHAHAHAHA" like they had no reason to be there. :P But its cool for Grohl to give a shout out to DT.

wow i didnt even see the video in the link i posted. that guys a kissass, probably his job. at least it kinda makes DT as the thing to beat in metal
-
I can't see the video because of my region :censored
Anyway, I've always thought Grohl is a nice guy, and reading his statements I think I was right (although he said "the DT guy" :lol

And he actually started to say "he" in reference to DT and immediately realized his mistake and changed it to "they."

That was a super cool shout out by Grohl.... :metal
