Title: Any fans of Orphaned Land out there?
Post by: WindMaster on November 06, 2011, 06:09:51 PM
Just wondering if anyone also likes this band in this forum. I'm sure they would get appreciation here. If you know them, great. If you don't, check 'em out!

I like them.  They used to get talked about a lot more 5 or so years ago, when Mabool was still newer.  I think the long drought of albums sapped some of that active interest.

They are an absolutely phenomenal band. I don't really care too much for their first two albums but Mabool and Orwarrior are outstanding masterpieces. I really want to get their new DVD btw.

Really good band, I really digged Mabool and Warrior. I listen to them every now and then and it's always a pleasure when they do come on my playlist

There was an orwarrior thread out there somewhere, it's probably too old now.

But anyway, really good band. Innovative but also somewhat flawed. Mabool felt original but had it's weaker parts, whilst orwarrior was stronger overall but Steve Wilson really should have reigned them in more, it's got far too many wanky wank technical parts that make it far too long of an album, when if they had chopped about 20-25 minutes from it then it would have been absolutely amazing.

Actually, the only album I've heard is orwarrior and some of Mabool. I like OrWarrior much better.

I think I'm the definitive Orphaned Land fan here, or at least I've been told since I actually own The Beloved's Cry.  I'm waiting for my copy of The Road to or-Shalem Deluxe Hardback book to arrive.

I actually find myself listening to Mabool more.  I think ORwarriOR has better production, but I like the songwriting in Mabool more.  Both albums are very good though and I'd recommend them to anybody.  Beloved's Cry is good, but it has less of the "local flavor" that really add to Mabool and ORwarriOR.

That "local flavor" is really what I like about these guys. Israeli folk music FTW!

You guys don't find orwarrior too long?

https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/34333/Orphaned-Land-The-Never-Ending-Way-Of-ORwarriOR/

I agree with pretty much everything this guy says, except that it's better than the rating he gave it. Interestingly the same guy gave mabool a 5 (though he says its a 4.5 now)

I think it's a great album. Some tracks stand out more than others and I agree that it could be a bit shorter, also. Considering I haven't heard all of Mabool (OrWarrior is my first (and currently only) album), OW is good.

Guys. Kobi Fahri has put together a compilation of oriental metal, the first ever! It includes bands such as Myrath, Amaseffer, Nile and Orphaned Land, to name a few.

If you already heard about this and pre-ordered it, they will be shipped soon.

It will be awesome.  :metal

They are almost a band I'd love but the vocals ruin it for me. Don't like the harsh voice in any music, but the melodic vocal here doesn't do it for me either- not doubting the quality of the singer, it's more the melodies and style of singing I don't like. Musically it's got a lot to offer me as I love the Middle-Eastern vibe in bands like Myrath and Amaseffer (and DT even- Outcry, Home)- it comes from my love of Ritchie Blackmore I guess. Can't get past the vocals though, and that's a shame.
I like the message too, though i don't imagine Amadinajad changing his policies after hearing their albums.

Actually, that info kind of turns me off. I really love Kobi's harsh vocals because they are so unique. I'll probably listen to this one, but so far I don't like what I'm hearing as much as Orwarrior. Still decent mind you, but just not at Orwarrior or Mabool level.

Absolutely, it's still a phenomenal album. They've really upped their game in terms of the orchestration and folk elements. OL fans won't be disappointed with it.

Lack of growls makes it sound a bit different than previous albums.  I still have to listen to it a bit before I form a solid opinion on it.

I want to get into them and wonder what album to start with. I usually like to start with the earliest album that is already representative for the band overall.
Is Sahara too much Death and too little Prog? Should I start with Mabool instead?
I'm a huge Myrath fan BTW.

Since you're a Myrath fan I'd go for All Is One because its melody driven and only has one song with death growls. Its easily the closest to Myrath in my opinion.

You got me wrong. When I say Myrath, I mean the real Myrath from the days of Hope and Desert Call, back then they had some growls as well. I still hope that Tales from the Sands is just a phase that will pass.
I actually welcome death growls in prog.

Desert Call is my favorite Myrath album by a mile, listened to it way more than their other albums and can't recall any death growls on it at all. In fact I'd liken Desert Call to Tales more that anything else.

So since you like the growls just get anything releases before All Is One.

I'd check out the music through streaming first, it's a good way to find out which albums should be bought. Personally I really dig All Is One, but don't have any other of their records. I can't stand noise in music (growling = noise no matter if you actually like it or not). I like AIO because of the melodic and middle eastern content.

bump.

some disappointing news, Guitarist/Main Songwriter and founding member Yossi Sassi has decided to leave the band.

However, his upcoming solo album "Desert Butterflies"  may be well worth checking out when it's released.

https://www.blabbermouth.n...ossi-sassi-quits-band/

Guitarist Yossi Sassi, founding member and main composer of Israel-based oriental folk metallers ORPHANED LAND, has announced his departure from the band.

In a statement, he said: "I never thought that someday I'll write these words… yet if there's something stronger than our past — it is our future, and our dreams, as we evolve and understand what is right for us in the path ahead.

"You know I always strive to be creative, innovative, compose the next authentic thing, and devoted my life to fuse and mix together the East and West, acoustic with electric, rock with folk traditional music, all with authenticity and full heart.

"Books could be written from the what I've done for and gone through since founding ORPHANED LAND (initially named RESURRECTION in 1991), from every fan mail in the early '90s, through signing the first deal with Holy Records, endorsements, budgeting, website development, pledging... the list goes on and on. Above all, I'm proud most of my vast compositions, arrangements, production and musical boundaries explored.

"ORPHANED LAND has been a dream turned into reality with tremendous hard work and accomplishments. It is my life's work, spanning over more than 22 years as a founding member, composer, producer and many other roles. But mainly being 'the heart' I always believed ORPHANED LAND should reflect through.

"I feel that now, from all the right reasons that I can and cannot change, the time has come for new dreams.

"The first dream is on its way already. The new album I'm working on these days will be called 'Desert Butterflies', a conceptual piece, rich and diverse, continued to my debut solo release, 'Melting Clocks', and the 'oriental rock' genre I've been pioneering and redefining. It includes musical collaborations with Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal (GUNS N' ROSES), Marty Friedman (MEGADETH), Mariangela Demurtas (TRISTANIA) and more. it'll be worth the wait.

"I'm never leaving you.

"I'm not closing the door, not on ORPHANED LAND members, and certainly not on YOU, my beloved and loyal fans, friends and followers.

"The best is yet to come... I guarantee it to you, personally."

ORPHANED LAND's sixth full-length album, "All Is One", was released in North America on June 25, 2013 (one day earlier internationally) via Century Media Records. The cover artwork for the follow-up to 2010's "The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR" was created by the French artist Metastazis (PARADISE LOST, AS I LAY DYING, SONNE ADAM, WATAIN) by perfectly incorporating the three biggest religious symbols into one piece of art.

"All Is One" was made available as a limited deluxe book edition, including three bonus songs and a bonus DVD, as well as limited double gatefold LP, including the three bonus songs and in different vinyl colors. A standard jewelcase CD format and digital download is also available.

The limited-edition version of "All Is One" contains a very special bonus DVD with some very exclusive music clips and an interesting documentary about the genesis and recording of the album.

ORPHANED LAND's new effort was the band's first to feature guitarist Chen Balbus following the departure of Matty Svatizky in June 2012 due to "personal" and "professional" issues.

"All Is One" was mixed by Jens Bogren (JAMES LABRIE, DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT, OPETH) and was recorded in three different countries: Israel, Turkey and Sweden. Ironically, these countries are Jewish, Muslim and Christian, respectively, which strengthens the ORPHANED LAND message of unity through music. Over 40 musicians were used to flesh out the sound of "All Is One", including 25 choir singers and eight classical violin, viola and cello players from Turkey.

ORPHANED LAND's concert DVD, "The Road To OR-Shalem", was released in October 2011 in Europe and November 2011 in the U.S. via Century Media Records.

Just listened to the two singles, and I gotta say I'm pumped for this album. Like Orpheus is probably the better of the two, and it's such a consistently good song. We Do Not Resist isn't quite as good imo (there were a few moments that irked me a bit), but some of the word painting is cool and I like some of the lyrics.

In general, Orphaned Land is a band I deeply respect for continuing to bridge the gap between Jews and Muslims and striving for peace between them. I don't usually focus on lyrics, but Orphaned Land is one of those bands that I respect a lot because of the lyrics (and the music too, of course). I think my favorite song from them has to be Brother because...dang. That's an emotionally heavy song. It makes me feel things.

And here are the two new songs since they haven't been linked yet:

Definitely a great contender for AOTY. This release it’s their most mature released, and the production it’s top notch.

I think I got sent an Orphaned Land in my roulette?

I just gave the new album a listen and of the 3 albums I've heard, that were released this year, it's easily the best. I already dig bands like Myrath (and these guys sound very similar) so I could see me liking this. I'll be giving it another spin soon.

I listened the new álbum once yesterday, i already liked 3 or 4 songs. The first song is great. I think I'm gonna love this album, "All is one" is one of my favorite albums.

Long time fan here who loves Mabool and my initial impressions are less positive. Not sure the band still works for me without Yossi, but I'll give the album some more spins.

Yep, first listen a couple hours ago and it's really good! This was also my first 2018 album listen so far so can't really compare it to anything, but that first listen was really promising. The opener, Left Behind, My Brother's Keeper and All Knowing Eye were my early standouts.

Chains Fall to Gravity was probably my favourite on first listen. I listened on Spotify earlier, did it beep out swear words (I assume) for anyone else?

I'm checking the new one out now on Spotify. I've tried OL before, and they didn't really do it for me.

This was also my first 2018 album listen

I just sent you some 2018.  :)

Got through the OL today. Lots to like about it, but in the end they're a just miss for me. I am really not into the Middle Eastern flavorings in their music. I find it totally distracting.

From what I heard (I haven't listened to the physical disc yet) is that the band bleeped out the swear words throughout the album to protest government censorship. Granted this was from a friend on FB, but he's usually pretty spot on with this type of stuff.

They also censored the words in the booklet with a black “marker”

Late thoughts after first listen: this album is good. Not great, but good. The music is phenomenal (some of the best they've written), and how it transitions from the Arabic strings to metal in a lot of songs is really cool. The arrangement's also gotten more complex and interesting, which is also a plus. The rhythm guitar work in particular was a highlight for me. But the album's not without its flaws, and three things that really stood out as really glaring were the censored swears (which were a little distracting, but I guess it fits into the whole anti-totalitarianism/censorship thing they had going), the harsh vocals (didn't care for those, but I could tolerate them at times), and some of the lyrics. Like, I get the message of the album and I like and agree with it as a whole, but there are some lyric choices that make me cringe so hard. It's not so much that there are unfortunate implications in the lyrics or it missed the mark with the message, but there's certain technical things that just irk me.

Side note: that guillotine/execution ending is literally one of the most brutal things I've heard. That really caught me off guard. One of the highlights of the album for me.

I've never listened to Orphaned Land but I ordered the new album yesterday and it's out for delivery. Will be listening tonight. I have no idea what I'm in for other than a friend comparing them to Myrath (of whom I only know one album). Looking forward to it.

EDIT: This is amazing. Simply amazing. You know what I really like about this... the epic choir moments remind me of Epica, except they aren't overused and make every single song of theirs sound the same. This is some incredible symphonic, prog, folk... whatever the hell you want to call it metal, it is some fascinating, beautiful music!

Just got back from their show opening for Tyr. Goddamn are they tremendous live, such a tight band with a captivating stage presence. The new songs they played sounded soooooo good, especially the Cave, they leveled the crowd with that one. Was really cool to see a viking metal pro-Tyr crowd really get won over by Orphaned Land, I swear it took Tyr a few tracks to get the crowd going again.

If you're on the tail end of this tour, don't miss it.

Yeah, had a similar experience with them opening for Blind Guardian (except that the crowd did not slow down for BG), they were an awesome opener and I'd definitely consider attending a headliner show, especially since their newest album is ace.

Just saw them last week.  Had never heard of them let alone listened to them.  I was blown away.  I was actually blown away by the whole lineup.  It was one of those perfect shows where every band just fits perfectly.  In a way it was like the United Nations of metal.  After loving Ghost Ship Octavius and then Aeturnum, I was not even interested in Orphaned Land because whoever they were probably couldn't top the first two.  I was busy buying merch when they went on and didn't even pay attention to the first song or two and then when I finally zoned in I was blown away.  Thank god they accept credit cards at merch tables now.  I have never spent so much on merch at a show.

Just got their latest in the mail.  It's going to be hard catching up on all the music I've got to listen to.

I had the same AWESOME problem a few months ago. Mabool and All Is One are my favourite in their discography. Kobi has a hypnotizing stage presence, the bass sounds loud and clear, and the solos are simply razor-sharp throughout their set. Until last December I had no idea they even existed, but when I was offered the chance to interview Kobi I went through their back catalogue. Totally worth it.

I was floored by Aeternam, and have been spinning their latest album all morning. Ghost Ship were solid, but had some major technical issues which hampered the experience (drummer blew out his kick drum, and fixed it mid show with gaffers tape. Tyr were enjoyable, but that brand of metal wears thin with me.

Here's me post show with the bassist, had a nice little chat with him, solid as fuck dude...

The level of energy on the Aeternam set when I saw them was off the charts!!!! I had no idea what to expect, but at the end of the show I was asking myself "what the hell did I just watch!?!?!"

So apparently some years ago I listened to a snippet of an Orphaned Land song....for obvious reasons, and just didn't like it. At all. So I just avoided or ignored them for years and years.

Until this year.

Now I want to go back and punch younger me in the face for being such an idiot.

Seriously man, especially since you lived in Israel all that time and could've gotten the full Orphaned Land show, and not just the main band with backing tracks we get in the states.

I like this band, but I very strongly prefer their newest album with the least amount of growling on it.  It's unfortunate because musically I find all of their albums to be brilliant but those growling vocals are just  :|  for me personally.  I know some people dig that stuff, but it's a massive turnoff for me.

I got the boxset. Speculatively, coz I’d only heard a couple of things.

It’s good, but maybe I need time to let the tunes bed in a little
