Title: Seventh Wonder Appreciation
Post by: SystematicThought on October 18, 2011, 05:49:08 PM
I searched around for them here, I didn't find a topic for this band.

I simply loved Mercy Falls. A great concept album about a man who dreams up another world in his comatose state.

Tommy's vocals are great and Johan and Andreas drive the music with excellent chops on bass and guitar. I really enjoy this band

Check out the album Mercy Falls if you haven't heard them. I still need to check out The Great Escape

YES. Seventh Wonder are amazing, Tommy has some of the best vocals I've heard in progressive metal.

I personally like The Great Escape just a tad bit more than Mercy Falls, but they both own. However, the title track of TGE is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.

That's what I keep hearing. I have only heard snippets of TGE. I need to check it out badly

Yeah, the title track has some of the greatest melodies ever written. I've listened to it like 70 times and it's a 30 minute song, haha.

Every track on TGE is pretty great, though.

Unbreakable was the song that got me into these guys, though-- if anyone wants to get a good general idea of their sound, that's a pretty good one, I'd say.

I'm not sure which album I prefer, they are both really killer.  Anyone who loved Mercy Falls needs to check out TGE.  The title track is excellent, a very well done song considering its length.

Oh, I love Seventh Wonder. TGE is a masterpiece, one of the best prog metal albums I've ever heard. I was initially reluctant to listen to them because EVERYONE hypes the heck out of them and whenever that happens to me, I usually wind up being let down-but they lived up to the hype. Great band.

Same here, though I really think Mercy Falls is a bit average. Great playing, great singer, but nothing on that album really popped at me. Been meaning to check out the other releases but the local record store never restocked any of their albums. =\

A really great band, and my favourite song of theirs is the one you posted in the OP, Welcome To Mercy Falls.

I love Mercy Falls. As far as initial reactions go, I think they're one of the top 20 bands I've encountered when judging that initial "ooohh....aaahhh" factor. The album is full of beautiful melodies and machinelike tightness by the musicians and the storyline is quite the tearjerker indeed. Only hangup for me was that the voice acting during the brief interludes fell extremely short of doing the music and storyline its true justice. Some of it flat-out reeked of them just throwing some random people they knew into the mix.

I wasn't too crazy about it either.  So it's not just you.  Songs seemed a bit....disjointed, though not "bad" per se.....still a good album, but I like the other two better.

Tommy Karevik *might* be a guest vocalist on my band's next album.  Timing of the recording sessions is a bit of a hurdle, but we're working on it.

Have you listened to their 30 minute title track The Great Escape? That's probably what's missing. It's the greatest thing they've ever composed.

^ Basically this.

Just been listening to The Great Escape (album) and am halfway through Mercy Falls, which prompted me to search for this thread. Mercy Falls is an amazing album and I didn't think they would ever make an album better than it, but since TGE's title track alone takes me on a journey almost as much as Mercy Falls, I think I have to hand it to TGE. The rest of the songs on the album are just like the icing on the cake - even though they're all also great and would make up a decent album (close to the level of WITW) if they were on the album alone.

Also, just recently found the full version of In The Blink Of An Eye (2011). It's great to hear some new (to me, since I never really listen to Become) Seventh Wonder.

I've got Mercy Falls and The Great Escape and I love both of those albums but I still need to complete my collection of albums with Tommy as vocalist. Too much good music being released and old music being reissued!
At some point, I also plan on getting a shirt from their official store to show my support.

The Great Escape
Mercy Falls
-
Waiting In The Wings
-

Become

Since the vocals are such an important part of why the band is good, their first album without Tommy doesn't come close to the others, although the songs on it all sound pretty good in themselves and the instrumentation is still top notch. Waiting In The Wings is great - all three albums with Tommy are of a similarly high standard - it just lacks something special to put it on the same level as the other two albums imo. The Great Escape and Mercy Falls are just awesome - I'd favour TGE over MF but they're both around the same level.

And yeah, The Great Escape title track is one of my favourites ever, and pretty much why TGE is my favourite album by them. I know lots of people don't like really long songs but even though TGE is the longest single track I own it never feels too long to me - I think it really works for the song.

What really strikes me about the music is that it is very intricate, layered, tightly woven, and the product of great musicianship, all while being very easy to listen to. It is as 'catchy' as prog metal can get, I think. Plus, of course, the vocals!

Yeah, absolutely fantastic band. Both musically and personally. I started listening to them like a year after Become came out; loved it back then! Then they released WITW and I attended their release party and was blown away.... and they keep doing that to me on every new release. Just love the vocals, all the melodies and of course, Andreas's bass playing.

They guys are from around where I live, so it's not rare to see them at different shows or around town.

Mostly due to the fact that on this forum, dedicated to a Prog Metal band, most of the members here hate Prog Metal, and Seventh Wonder are often criticized for being "cookie-cutter" Prog Metal.

They are one of the rare "cookie cutter" prog metal bands I even listen to. Maybe it's because I ran into them back when I was expanding my prog metal knowledge from just DT (early 2010 it was), but I would rather believe it's because they kick serious ass. I adore them.

"Seventh Wonder studio update:

What´s up, friends of SW worldwide!

This is Stefan checking in to share some of the stuff going on at SW headquarters at the moment. As you all know, Tommy is currently tearing up the road with Kamelot in the US, having a blast and scoring loads of new SW fans in the process! Awesome!

Meanwhile Andreas, Johan, Kyrrt and myself are hard at work on the follow up to “The great escape”, trading riffs, throwing out ideas, arranging parts and even full songs and demoing like crazy. Tommy left some great stuff for us to dig into and we´ve also written a bunch of tracks based on each of our individual ideas. Being the new guy, I´m thrilled to be part of this creative process. I mean, the level of musicianship with these guys is mindblowing, yet much of the stuff I´ve been presented with, while seemingly impossible to pull off at first, is so clever and well written that it makes sense musically right off the bat. I guess that´s part of the magic of SW music that I fell in love with when I first joined the band. The new music is definitely very progressive and melodic and totally in the vein of the last couple of albums, but you´ll also find it´s heavier than before…
We cannot wait to share it with you guys!

Stay tuned…

/Stefan"

I met those guy in Norway back in 2010. It was a weird experience. I had become a huge fan by then, and I randomly found out on facebook that they were doing a gig at a bar in Oslo. I was drunk and really excited, but when I arrived, there was only like 30 people in the crowd and the rest of the bar consisted of regular guests that was there for a drink and not the concerts.... So when I met them after the concert and told them how much I listens to them, Tommy seemed really amazed that there were fans like me out there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlYvfoSKwhk here's a clip from the gig.

They are now in my top 5 bands, and been that since my first listen. My biggest concern with SW is their lyrics actually, even though I don't care that much, some of them are just way too cheesy in every kind of way.

I actually think that WITW is my favorite album among them, I really enjoy the vocals on that album, particularly The Edge of My Blade

I don't know if I'd describe it like that. It's not that the lyrics are "cheesy", but they are overly literal, perhaps to a fault. Further, the spoken dialogue portions dealing with heavy topics in Mercy Falls are delivered with the emotional depth of a kiddie pool, almost no variation or inflection in their voices, making it come off very robotic. I had a hard time getting past that, but the music, my god, the music is SOOOO awesome, it's easy to get an acquired taste for. I couldn't stop listening to Mercy Falls and I still give it regular spins. Only discovered these guys a few months ago, but I'm very pleased with what they are doing.

Good to hear there is another album in the works.

Update from Andreas Blomqvist:

Quote
Hey y'all!

Yesterday was a great rehearsal and not only cuz we finished a new track and were off to a flying start on yet another one, but also because it was the first time Tommy was back in the studio for a while.

It was a great, creative and positive atmosphere as we finished a track by me, started one by Kyrt and Stefan played us a demo of some exciting stuff he was working on. With the addition of these three tracks (although only one is really completed, but still) we are really making good progress with the new album and we have amassed a lot of great new material.

You know, it is a funny ride, to be part of the making of a Seventh Wonder album because you never really know where it'll take you. I hear lots of familiar stuff, but also I hear us exploring some previously uncharted territories, mostly in terms of moods and feels -which is something I think is a great thing. I personally feel that on the track Great Escape we allowed ourselves to strecth our legs, figurativey speaking, and try some new extremes in various directions and I believe there will be more of that on this new release.

We have to take care and not to rush things. We owe it to Stefan, and we owe it to Tommy -but most of all we owe it to you out there. I know it has been a long wait and I know we still have a aways to go but I really believe it will make for a better album in the end.

If you have some thoughts or ideas on what you would like to hear more of on this next album, now is the time to speak. We always stay true to our hearts and do what we feel like but it is sometimes great with a little outside spark to set something off -so please, fire away.

Thank you all for sticking with us. I hope we can try to take on the new year with great enthusiasm going forward and keep on this cool ride together.

Cheers!

//AB

I will try to avoid having too high expectations, but this could end up being my most anticipated album so far.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I much prefer all the other "short" tracks to the title track on TGE. It has some good idea's, but it doesn't seem to flow very well for me. Songs like Alley Cat and King of Whitewater with the monster hooks and melodies are what I like.

I agree. I still very much like TGE but i like the different parts more so than the whole, I think its a great song, but the other tracks are better whole songs IMO.

Just like any 20+ minute song, there are going to be ups and downs... sometimes intentional.  To each their own.  Sometimes you want a 7 course meal, sometimes you just want a footlong sub, sometimes you just want a pizza pocket.

I agree with both of you guys. The Great Escape (track) is awesome, but I very rarely find myself wanting to sit down and listen to it on its own. Instead, most of the times I only listen to Mercy Falls and the shorter songs before it. Either way though, it's a great song and anything close to that quality on the next album would be awesome. Personally, I'm hoping they experiment a bit more with their heavier side, while sticking with the ridiculously catchy hooks and  :o vocal moments.

Personally The Great Escape isn't only Seventh Wonder's best song, but one of my favourites in general. I think it flows perfectly well as a whole. Obviously I'm not always going to be in the mood to listen to a really long song, but I still find myself listening to TGE more often than other long songs that I think are great like Octavarium - it doesn't feel like such a big commitment to put on TGE even though it's longer than most other epics.

The band just posted a Q&A video and showed three short teasers of new material at the end of the video. Sounds great so far, a tad bit more symphonic than before, I think.

"Hi Everybody!

AndreasB here checking in from the studio. Maybe you saw Stefan setting up the drums a couple of days ago, so I thought I'd drop a little longer report to let you al in on what's going on.

As you know this year will finally see the recording of a Seventh Wonder DVD, something people have been on us about for *years*.
We are thrilled to be able to bring you this, but in order to do it well, it will inevitably push back the album a little bit further. However, we decided we can't let you guys be without new music very much longer so here's the deal;
the studio is now set up for real and we started today to record new music!
The plan is also to very soon, during the spring, record and hopefully release a brand new video and release one or two tracks that we will record right now.

We hope that you will follow the progress here on Facebook as we see new material come to life and watch Stefan Norgren lay down his first proper recording behind the SW kit.

Today we were off to a flying start - but I'll let Stefan share his experience with you from his perspetive...

Thanks for tuning in and sticking by us. I believe the new tracks will be smoking and you can bet we will bring the new songs to the stage as soon as we can!

So - Bring it on!!!"

I was actually going to bump this thread to ask:

What are some more songs like Alley Cat, Not an Angel and Waiting in the Wings? I know the band is known for having extremely catchy stuff, but these three songs have been the only ones that have had any lasting power.  What other songs have that "single" vibe to them?

Have you heard Mercy Falls? The song Welcome To Mercy Falls is quite catchy.

Or did you mean songs by other bands like that?

Well they only have 3 albums that are that worth listening to imo (listen to their first album without Tommy if you're a diehard, although personally even I don't listen to it...), so if you have already tried listening to an album and only those stuck with you then it just may be that you'll only get into those few songs (and I say this as a massive Seventh Wonder fan). If not, then as I said there are only 3 albums and two of the three you've picked are from Waiting In The Wings, which is their shortest album and has a lot of other songs that have really catchy melodies imo (Taint The Sky, Edge Of My Blade and Banish The Wicked strike me as having especially catchy melodies, particularly the choruses), so it may be a good idea just to try and give that one a listen, give the songs a few chances and see if anything sticks.

Alternatively, the one song that always comes to mind for most catchy and one of their best is Hide And Seek - catchy chorus, catchy but relatively heavy riff, and great overall song. Move On Through from TGE (same album as Alley Cat) also is really catchy and really has a "single" vibe to it (more poppy than Alley Cat even, perhaps). But those are just my preferences - people have a different idea of what's catchy so don't write them off if you don't agree with my selections!

(Edit: I would also second "Welcome To Mercy Falls" as an awesome but catchy and "single" type song. That, Hide And Seek and Unbreakable from Mercy Falls).

And in general -  still absoutely can't wait for this album, very glad to be seeing news that things are on track  :tup

The songs you mentioned from Mercy Falls weren't bad, but for the life of me I just can't get into that album. It goes beyond the horrible voice acting.
Title: Re: Seventh Wonder Appreciation
Post by: Shadow Ninja 2.0 on February 22, 2014, 12:25:47 PM
The voice acting is particularly horrific. The worst is on One Last Goodbye, probably the most beautiful song on the album, and then THAT FREAKING DOCTOR STARTS TALKING AND SCREWS IT ALL UP

Dadgum I hate that. Album's good anyway, but...

Looks like that new track that was getting a little bit of discussion a few months back is about to be released (within the next couple weeks). From Facebook:

Quote
Hello, everybody!

I have some wonderful news for you all:
the guys sent me some stuff to share with you, and it's with great pleasure and excitement that I can announce that new Seventh Wonder music is coming your way..... really soon  !

Below you can read a message for you all (in which you'll get a good idea of things to come), accompanied by a new bandpicture!

//Arjan

Here's the message:
"Seventh Wonder fans, we know you have been running on empty for far too long, so it is with great pleasure we finally can release some news. We have recorded a brand new music video for the recently recorded new song entitled “Inner Enemy”.
The track has been recorded in Studio Wonderland and mixed by Øyvind Voldmo Larsen of Withem. Stay tuned as we will release some behind the scene footage during the upcoming week, and the video itself will be launched shortly thereafter.

It has been four years since the video for 'Alley Cat' was shot so it feels great to finally have a new video and a new song for you people out there. We hope this will satisfy the most immediate needs and keep you alive up to the live recording of Mercy Falls. We also have some more news coming later this fall and obviously exciting plans for the next album.

In the meantime here is a first little “Hello, we are alive and well” from me and the boys and we can’t wait to show you the video and play you some new stuff!

Cheers, Andreas B.

I love it. A tad more poppy than most of their discography but I don't mind. Good vocals, nice instrumental touches and a good flow.

Their look is also a pretty welcome change as I already see way too many serious looking dark clothed guys with beards and long hair. I think it fits their image pretty well.

And I am also very curious to see/hear their upcoming live rendition of Mercy Falls (which I unfortunately will not be able to attend).

I personally haven't heard anything recently. Back in the summer, I had figured it'd come out sometime in December, but came to realize it'd be later than that after not hearing anything from the band by the time of late October/early November.

It ends up that it's not really my cup of tea. IMO it's too generic prog, and there's too much melody all over the place from my tastes. But still, some songs are awesome, like King Of Whitewater. I won't sell it. Tommy's voice is stellar though.

I can confirm that Seventh Wonder's extreme melodicness may be exhausting at first... But I've come to love almost every single song, after I got to know them. To me it appears knowing the songs is the key to loving them. the Great Escape is now my #1 favourite song actually. How are things for you know?

The title track of the Great Escape was the first song that hooked me and one of my favourite epics (was not blown away at first, but did hear some stuff that kept me coming back). And yeah, I did not like Mercy Falls at all the first few times. But for some reason I kept revisiting some songs and then it clicked massively.

I know there are some generic prog elements (I call them well used genre trademarks in this case  :P) there, but as a whole I am not aware of a band that sounds like this (only that related band Withem, which does have some really similar parts).

Yeah, The Great Escape title track is pretty much unbeatable for me but Break The Silence was always my favourite one apart from that, and the instrumental in particular. These days I struggle to decide between this and Hide And Seek as my favourite behind TGE, which means the one-two punch of those songs is certainly pretty great

Frontiers Music srl is excited to announce the signing of Swedish progressive metal masters Seventh Wonder for a multi album deal!

Originally formed in Stockholm in 2000, the band debuted in 2005 with “Become”. The second album, “Waiting in the Wings” - and first to feature Tommy Karevik on vocals - followed in 2006. Two more successful records, the concept album “Mercy Falls”, and “The Great Escape”, followed before the band went on hiatus following singer Tommy Karevik being chosen to take Roy Kahn’s place in KAMELOT.

Seventh Wonder is now ready to start again and has plans to return with a live recording and a brand new album to kick things off.
Bass player Andreas Blomqvist states: “It has been too quiet in the Seventh Wonder camp for far too long – and FINALLY that is about to change! Many years have passed since we last put out a record but, finally the band is a fully functioning unit again, ready to create some great new music. As we were getting ready to get back on track we also needed somebody to partner with. Somebody who shared our vision for the band and saw our potential and was willing to commit to the band. We have found that somebody in Frontiers! We are thrilled to be on board with such a famous label with many of our favourite bands on their roster. You, the fans, have been more patient than anyone could ever deserve. We are equally proud and humbled by that and we promise to do our best, together with our new friends at Frontiers, to make up for the years of silence by going full speed ahead. And you know what? The new album is sounding great!”
Fans first taste of new music will see the light of day in the fall, with the new album expected to be released in the first half of 2017.

Didn't expect it to be Frontiers, but hey, at least I will likely get the promo ahead of the release date.

Really disappointed they didn't make a blu ray, like what's the point of making a concert video and not have it on blu ray?  Regardless, I will buy.

I'd like more bluray too but I'm always concerned about obsolescence in BluRay.  Probably not a real worry since DVD has stuck around this long now.. but I always feel like if I buy the BluRay one day I won't be able to play it where I feel that is LESS likely with DVD.

I would say they are about the same.  Physical media is slowly on it's way out overall, but blu ray at least has the capacity for better quality so it could last a bit longer, but DVD has more accessibility since it's more available to everyone.

Concerts on blu-ray are just awesome though.  Better sound and video, it's really perfect for concerts.  Dream Theater's Live at Budokan is much better on blu ray for example.

Are you sure about LAB. I remember reading that it was just a straight up DVD transfer.  I think even someone in the DT camp confirmed nothing was done to it.

My eyes say it looks significantly better.  It wasn't mixed or edited any different.  Like most videos shot around that time, they were shot in HD but downgraded the quality for DVD, so the blu-ray is just the same footage but without that downgrade in quality (the darks are less grainy for example).  Not sure the audio is any different though for that blu-ray, likely not since I do agree, I don't think anything was redone for the blu-ray.

After much thought and consideration, I've come up with a top 10 SW tracks. This is by far the hardest top I have done, since I basically love all of their songs, but here it is:

---Special Mentions first----
Inner Enemy
Walking Tall
One Last Goodbye
King of Whitewater
Welcome to Mercy Falls
--------
10)Fall In Line
9)Paradise
8)There And Back
7)Alley Cat
6)Taint The Sky
5) A Day Away
4)Hide and Seek
3)Unbreakable
2)The Great Escape
1)Break The Silence

I know most of them are Mercy Falls tracks but man, nothing can beat that album, really.

1. The Great Escape
2. Break the Silence
3. Fall in Line
4. The Angelmaker
5. Waiting in the Wings
6. The Edge of My Blade
7. King of Whitewater
8. The Black Parade
9. Alley Cat
10. Not An Angel

Waiting in the Wings is fucking underrated, I love it. I still prefer TGE and MF, but Waiting in the Wings is amazing as well.

Disappointed with the new DVD.  Not with the performance, but the quality.

No surround sound and bad camera angles.

To compare, Pagan's Mind released a blu-ray from the same year at ProgPower and the quality is significantly better.  In fact, I find that blu-ray to be one of the best in terms of picture quality that I've seen before.  It's really well done and I feel like both bands shot for the same thing... an album in it's entirety and a second set with other songs.  One's done well and the other isn't.  Having said that, I haven't watched all of SW's DVD yet.

I only listened to the audio (on Spotify/Deezer) and overall I really like it, have been listening to it frequently since it came out. Some songs work perfectly with that live edge to it (some don't do as well though) and the medley is an awesome way to end the whole thing. The sound doesn't stand out in any way to my ears, but is far from the worst I have heard. Cannot comment on the actual footage though.

Also, here is the new track, The Promise in it's entirety on their official channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1p5xwSxHoQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1p5xwSxHoQ)

I love it! I swear I know some of the melodies of the beginning from something else (mainly the keys, maybe from a game/film or something?), but it all fits perfectly in a SW song.

From their FB feed this morning:

Quote
Dear friends,
It is with great pleasure that I can share with you this exciting news:
SEVENTH WONDER is back with their fifth studio album, titled ‘Tiara’.
The new album is now in the final stages of mixing, and it is being mixed at Lionheart Studio in Oslo, Norway by Oyvind Voldmo Larsen (who also mixed “Inner Enemy” and “The Promise”).
It is the first studio album to feature Stefan Norgren on drums, and in two weeks the album will be passed on to Jens Bogren of Fascination studios for mastering. Jens has previously worked on albums by Symphony X, Katatonia, Opeth and James LaBrie.
The 13 tracks of this concept album will visit some new sonic spaces for Seventh Wonder, while staying true to their form.
After the mastering, the finished album will be delivered to Frontiers Records for a world wide release.
“We’ve watched you since the dawn of time,
with every moment gone by.
A million suns fade and die,
this is the end?”
Beware, for they’re coming….!

This has been so long in the waiting.  I'm almost ready to get a YtseBitsySpider-esque Circus-Maximus-rage going (for those that remember).

Not being a fan of the last two Kamelot albums I have to say: FINALLY. That artwork is gorgeous and I can't wait to hear this.

I hope Kamelot at least reins it in a little bit for their next album. Tommy's been a lovely fit but they've become so overindulgent with the concepts and symphonic sound that I've been itching for new Seventh Wonder for years and it's about damn time  :lol

I wouldn't mind some dialogue, but I'd have to be 1) better acted, by someone that speaks proper English and 2) not placed in actual songs. Make it small separate tracks, like, say, Blind Guardian did with Nightfall in Middle Earth. But overall I do prefer storytelling through the music.

Agreed... the content of the spoken part wasn't the issue, it was the delivery.  Both the Dr. and Wife were awful.  Plus putting Tommy's vocals behind some of those parts was a terrible idea.

I've only ever managed to read bits and pieces of Aniara, but the song is a decent enough summary of the poem. It's more like Iced Earth's Dante's Inferno in that it's not a 1:1 adaptation, but it gives you a pretty solid general idea of what happens.

Finally almost eight years after the release of one of my favourite albums ever, we have a new Seventh Wonder album.  :metal

A few years ago I'd resigned myself to possibly never getting more SW, and after they confirmed a new album there was still a whole lot of waiting. Rather than letting my expectations build to ridiculous levels that no album could match I was ready to just take this album as it comes and be glad for the existence of a new Seventh Wonder album even if some of the magic was gone. With that in mind, I'd say I'm thrilled by this album, and would have been safe all along expecting an album that lived up to the promise of the band's previous material.

The best (or most concise) way of describing this album is that despite the wait, it feels like the band hasn't missed a beat since Mercy Falls and The Great Escape. Of course that cuts both ways - it sounds pretty much exactly what you'd expect the follow-up to The Great Escape to sound like, so if for whatever reason you're not a fan of Mercy Falls and The Great Escape then it's hard to make the case why this album would suddenly do it for you (though I'd argue it's always a good time to try to give Seventh Wonder a chance if you're not a convert already!). But if like me you consider those albums to be top prog metal releases then Tiara is an amazing addition.

I really enjoyed The Great Escape but Mercy Falls didn't really do anything for me. That being said I don't really go back to this band often so I'm hesitant to get the new album.

Lots of good stuff on the album. Didn't finish it as I forgot to charge my phone and it died right in the beginning of Damnation Below. :lol

Really liked Beyond Today on the first listen. Also, I thought By the Light of the Funeral Pyres was one of the most power metal-influenced songs from the last three albums.

My pre-ordered bundle (CD + T-shirt) is on the way, and I don't regret pre-ordering this at all. It'll probably be my AOTY if Haken doesn't surpass this.

Awesome album! Not really a song I don't like from the first listening session.

I do agree with the review linked above that the sound is a bit less than previous albums. The bass is a bit buried and the vocals are sound a tad more "distant" when compared to previous work. Probably because I have been listening to a lot of Mercy Falls and Great Escape in anticipation, but I prefer the audio on those albums.
Title: Re: Seventh Wonder Appreciation
Post by: Evermind on October 13, 2018, 02:39:50 AM
The vocals are definitely lower in the mix. I remember even the band on FB admitted that they wanted the vocals to be on the same level as instruments sound-wise. The result is, the vocals are very clear on acoustic pieces like Beyond Today (holy shit this song :hefdaddy ), and are a bit drowned if there's a lot going on in the background.

I don't have any issue with bass and drums though, I think these sound pretty much fine.

Second listen in and I'm in love with this album.

The Everyones was pretty good. Dream Machines blew, and Against The Grain is just OK(oohh, like that breakdown section!!).

IDK, I know this is an appreciation thread. I've just never been able to get into Seventh Wonder.

I'm running through the album though.

The new album is easily the musical highlight for me this year. Only on my second spin now, but this is some really great stuff. Very catchy, and Tommy has never been better. The mix isn't perfect, but it does sound pretty good on headphones. A bit more bass in general would be appreciated, and the guitars sound a little muddy. Still, none of that is able to take anything away from my enjoyment of the album. This music feels like it's written for me, it just fits my taste so well. I hope that they'll be able to release new music more frequently again, SW is much more interesting to me at this point than Kamelot.

:lol album really is fantastic.  Tommy shines so much on it.  But I do feel like vocals and bass are really buried in the mix which is sad since those are two of the best instruments of SW.  Regardless, it doesn't really hold the songs back, they are great.  I'm still digesting as I've been listening to a lot of other music at the moment as well, but this is up for there album of the year for sure.

Same.  Looks like they got some chart success too from the album.  I hope that Tommy's time in Kamelot has brought more fans to SW which will in turn motivate the band to be more active.  Tiara destroys the last two Kamelot albums.

Post by: Scorpion on November 04, 2018, 01:35:59 AM
So while this doesn't reach the heights of TGE for me - something there is no shame in; very few albums do - it is a great album still.

I really like how "personal" it is, not in the sense of personal to the members of the band, but more like in how it relates the events of the end of the world so strongly to seemingly mundane points in life. Case in point: Beyond Today (which is fantastic holy shit  :hefdaddy ), which frames the end of the world against stuff like graduating from school. I think this helps the whole story feel a lot more grounded, which I like.

Musically, I felt that the bass was doing more cool stuff on MF and TGE, which was the only thing I missed. The melodies and overall compositions are still sublime.

Now if the next album comes out before 2028 I'll be a happy camper. :P

Probably going to be album of the year for me.  I'm still digesting but there isn't a bad track here and agreed, the Farewell trilogy is fantastic.  Tommy's voice just brings a tear to my eye at some points on this album, he's so good and I'm so annoyed he isn't louder, but I won't let that hold back my enjoyment of these songs.
Title: Re: Seventh Wonder Appreciation
Post by: ErHaO on November 06, 2018, 01:10:45 PM
Yeah, it is a stellar album. Not sure which track I love the most as of yet. I still really don't enjoy the mix though. I have relatively high tolerance for bad sounding albums, but for some reason this one bothers me quite a bit. Probably because the elements I love the most about this band are placed akwardly in the mix (rather than the elements themselves sounding bad, if that makes sense). I can hear them just fine, but it sounds very off to me.

The Japanese version also has an acoustic studio version of Tiara btw (it is on youtube).

Yea true.  I'd say the downfall is that maybe it sounds too much like TGE, but TGE is great and it feels more like a continuation of where they left off.  There's also tons of memorable melodies so I guess it's just different tastes then.

I guess that gives a taste of what we will get at ProgPower later this year.  They are a headliner so I expect double the songs, but I'd imagine all those will be played as well.

Saw them live last weekend, was a fun show!

Setlist:

The Everones
Welcome to Mercy Falls
Alley Cat
Banish the Wicked
Tiara's Song (Farewell, Pt. 1)
Tears for a Father
Hide and Seek
The Great Escape (shortened version to what I feel was 10-15 min?)
Bass solo
Taint the Sky
Inner Enemy
Exhale

Overall great performance. Mercy Falls tracks where the best, I think the band just has more routine in regards to those songs. My highlights were Welcome to Mercy Falls, Inner Enemy, Alley Cat, and The Great Escape (nice surprise as they didn't play that one most shows before it). Those more focused "poppy" song work really well live. For some reason the sound was wonky in some songs, but not others? Especially Exhale unfortunately sounded off. And I do mean sound, not performance. The volume levels of Tommy in particular where all over the place and the people I was with said the same. Tommy did struggle during some parts in the newer songs (Tiara was a bit off). That said, he and the rest of the band gave a great show and I do recommend catching these guys live if you ever have the chance! They are great entertainers and all band members have their moments.

If they record a show again during that Prog festival, I wouldn't mind a setlist like this at all.

Oh that's pretty cool they are doing a shorter version of The Great Escape.

I'm guessing this is the same set they will play at Progpower or similar, they will have a full headline slot so no reason to cut anything down and they aren't a band that's really full time at it so I wouldn't expect them to start learning other songs to swap in/out although I'd love to see more songs added of course.

"A few days ago we had the first full rehearsal for our headlining setlist for the upcoming festivals.
We are really not used to playing that long sets 😄.....
Anyway, I am happy with the setlist, probably the most happy I've been. Some fun things in there, something old something new, something borrowed something blue.

Can't wait to see y'all in Gothenburg, Norway and Atlanta, USA!"

It makes me excited that they are extending their setlist for Progpower, I hope they play By The Light of the Funeral Pyres since that's like SW doing power metal.  It would be so awesome.

Great news. Tiara was awesome, and it’ll be great to get a follow-up on a much shorter timetable. I would never have predicted in 2019 that this would be the next Tommy-Karevik-fronted band to release a studio album.

I believe Kamelot already had a lot of songs written for their new album and were ready to record back in like 2020, probably covid altered their plans heavily.

I haven't seen much from Kamelot lately, but I also had assumed an album was going to be ready for 2022.

I recall seeing something similar to this a while ago. Hopefully they finish it up soon. I'm probably in that minority that really liked The Shadow Theory, although Tiara was my preferred 2018 Karevik album.

Shadow Theory was the first Kamelot album I didn't purchase since I got in to Kamelot.  It was just too samey from Haven and Silverthorn.

Yeah, it was a decent album but the similarities to Haven definitely hurt it.  Tiara was definitely my preferred Tommy album of the year, I think I even ranked it as my favorite album of the year.

And I'm glad we got to see them at ProgPower.  Who knows if I'll ever get a chance to see them again.

At this point (and really since Ghost Opera) Kamelot is a band that does one thing. They happen to do that one thing really well, and it happens to be a thing I really like, so I don't mind too much if they keep making more iterations of that one thing. I do hope that their next album is not Haven Part 3, but I don't expect anything innovative from them at this point.

Seventh Wonder, on the other hand, still feels like it has a lot of creative potential. They feel like a band that could still have their best album in them (whereas Kamelot's best album is your pick of Karma/Epica/The Black Halo, and nothing's coming along to change that). And, this may be controversial, but I think Tiara is my favorite SW album yet (the last three are all really close, though). So I'm glad to see that they're keeping the momentum going, and definitely look forward to new Seventh Wonder with great anticipation than I look forward to Sacrimony Part 4, despite the fact that I'll probably enjoy that, too.

Tiara was good, but I feel like it was tiers below The Great Escape. Still interested in hearing whatever they do next, but I'm not really expecting it to push past TGE.

Yeah, I'd call that pretty good . It's pretty much what I expect from a Seventh Wonder single, but that's not at all a bad thing.

Tommy did an interview (https://youtu.be/IwD54IcZgzo) with Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice (reaction YouTube channel run by an opera singer/vocal coach). As is usually the case with her interviews, they went into a lot of detail about the behind-the-scenes of singing and songwriting, which is definitely interesting to me even as a non-singer. They also talk a little about the new album at about the 1 hour mark. Tommy says that the sessions were 4 months, which is unusually fast for Seventh Wonder, and he reveals that while the new album is not strictly a concept album, they did follow the theme of writing each song about a different emotion.

They also talk about Kamelot (which is why I'm going to make a similar post in the Kamelot thread, too). Mainly, they discuss Tommy's experience taking over for Roy Khan. There's also a little bit on the new album, which Tommy apparently finished recording right before the Seventh Wonder sessions started, but he's pretty cagey about a release date for that, pretty much only committing to the album coming out before spring 2023.

The Light is probably my favorite song out the year so far.

The Light is awesome but The Red River is the song I didn't know I needed! LOOOOOVE IT.

I am not sure Prog fans understand how grateful we all should be for having such a gifted singer as Tommy choosing to dedicate his voice to this genre 😁 He could easily choose a mainstream path and have great success there. What a voice!

It usually takes a while for me to fully wrap my head around a Seventh Wonder album, and I haven't listened to it many times yet, but I'm enjoying it so far! The Red River is one of the non-singles that stands out most to me, along with Under a Clear Blue Sky, which feels pretty epic, and Elegy, which is really emotionally resonant with me.

Yeah, I got it a bit late (ordered a physical copy because I am planning on bringing it to Progpower next year for Tommy to sign) but am really enjoying it so far.  The Light is indeed awesome, been stuck in my head.

This album really drives home to me that Kamelot could be doing so much more with Tommy's voice. Fantastic Album. The Red River is probably my favorite track at the moment, but it's solid beginning to end

I said it yesterday, but I want to say again that I think Elegy is a gorgeous song. It's such a showcase of what Tommy is capable of, and it's a really heartfelt song. It's nice to hear a band from a traditionally masculine genre of music sing about the harm of the idea that display of emotion is unmanly—even if it's a band that's already known for being pretty openly emotional.

In his interview with Elizabeth Zharoff (posted above) they briefly discussed the possibility of Tommy doing a solo album, maybe an acoustic one, one day. I really hope he decides to do it. When you hear stuff like Elegy, like One Last Goodbye, like Beyond Today, like the acoustic version of Against the Grain, it's hard not to want more. Tommy has tons of great performances on heavier music, but man, he's just astonishing on acoustic material.

Wow yes, Elegy. I never had the chance to listen to the album from start o finish until recently and finally heard Elegy. Daaaaaamn. Great song! Might be the most emotional one from SW so far for me. The subject really felt close to heart and Tommy is just once again showcasing why he might be the best in the genre. Wait, he is the best isn't he?  ;D

Everytime I think of Seventh Wonder I think of songs like these where Tommy can just shine.

I really enjoy this album because each time I listen to it I seem to have a new favorite song to listen to. With a lot of artists I really enjoy 4-5 songs and get burnt out on the rest, but for this one I'm enjoying a lot of different tracks. Good stuff.

Welp

Tommy has announced his departure from Seventh Wonder.

Seems like all on good terms.  Band will continue without him and Tommy doesn't have the time to devote to them and mentioned exploring other music options...

From his facebook:

Quote
Dear friends and Seventh Wonder  supporters around the world. Tommy here. Respectfully, if I could please have a few minutes of your time.
There's no easy way to say what I am about say, so I will just come out and say it...
Moving forward, I will no longer be the singer of Seventh Wonder.
Man... I knew this was going to be very hard, but it was so much harder than I thought actually putting the pen to the paper...  Seeing the words written down makes me more than a little emotional.  I love the music we've made. I love my brothers in the band and I am so incredibly proud of everything we've managed to create for ourselves during the last 18 something years. Organically, we fought for our own little piece of real estate in the prog metal universe, put a fence around it and called it our own. Unique and uplifting progmetal with catchy choruses. Playful, poppy melodies and raw emotion. Someone once said we sounded like "Europe on steroids"...  I loved that description so that one stuck with me.
We were all boys that grew to be men alongside each other. Through celebrations and tragedies we supported each other. Some became fathers and husbands. Many of the absolute best moments and memories, not only in music but in life in general, we shared together. Nothing will ever take that away or diminish the importance of that for me.
I am a relentlessly stubborn person... I don't consider myself a quitter... I don't give up.. However I think it is important to understand when it is best to move on for the sake of your own progress and wellbeing as well as for the people around you. To move on is simply making room for the new things you want in life. That being said, I feel like I have done my part as a singer,  writer and coproducer of Seventh Wonder.  I have said what I wanted to say. I have spent all my energy, countless hours of blood sweat and tears, and poured my heart and soul into this band since day one, and It couldn't have been any other way. It is just the way I am wired.  But everything has a time and a place and it's time for me to let my creativity and energy flow in a different direction.
Bottom line is that we only have one life. That is true for everyone and I feel like I need to make room for all the music that I still have inside me. Music that makes me happy and that not yet have had an outlet. It is the best and most honest way I can contribute to the world. It's a new chapter of my life, and one that I am very excited about.
Seventh Wonder is definitely a part of my identity and that's never going to change.
I am so thankful that I got to be a part of the SW journey. Thankful to my bandmates for taking me in and believing in me all those years ago, and thankful for everything that it led to. It has very much shaped me into who I am today.
We sure have come a long way from that moldy stamp of a rehearsal space in Ulvsunda, and my somewhat unconventional audition of "Stad i ljus".  And we did it as a band... Together.
Lastly, I am thankful for all the beautiful friends and supporters that we, as a band, have had the honor of meeting along the way. Unconditional love is the best way I can describe it. Always there on the sidelines cheering us on, even through periods of time when there was seemingly very little to cheer for. You are some of the finest and most patient fans in the world and you are a huge reason to why this is so hard to write.
So goodnight, but not goodbye. Rest assured that you will be hearing a lot more from both me and SW in the future, as we will all keep following our hearts in pursuit of happiness through the arts.
There is no bad blood between me and the rest of the band as we keep being the best of friends, and I wish nothing but success and happiness for the guys moving forward.
Thanks for listening. I Love you all, and I hope to have your continued support and understanding.
With gratitude.
Tommy

This is unfortunate, but not all that surprising, I think. My understanding is that he's a full-time professional musician now, while the rest of the band is still not, and with that change there understandably comes some changes in priorities.

The way he's writing this doesn't come across like it's primarily about Kamelot (although that's undoubtedly a factor), but more that he wants to make time for a new kind of project (" I feel like I need to make room for all the music that I still have inside me. Music that makes me happy and that not yet have had an outlet"). Maybe something acoustic or more in the pop realm, based on what his interests seem to be?

It's sad that we won't get another SW album with Tommy, but I'm excited to see what he comes up with. And I'll continue to follow the band, of course—hopefully they can find a solid replacement.

Sad news. I only started getting into SW sometime around last year, but I really enjoyed their stuff with Tommy and would take them before Kamelot any day, though the latter is most likely to be a lot more profitable for him.

This was likely unsustainable once he joined Kamelot.  But he continued and made two more albums with them.  I'm grateful for what we got and I'm glad I got to see Seventh Wonder at ProgPower.  An example of how different their schedules are, even at that ProgPower show, I got to meet the entire band and get a selfie with Tommy during their meet and greet:

(https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/69816129_10120275765365564_5544597058792456192_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=cdbe9c&_nc_ohc=kGzYTJlJV3AAX-5sni1&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-1.xx&oh=00_AfD3dj-ybn7LhqtFdyd55c4fnQszXqyybk7shJPIj6c08g&oe=64AEC515)

and then the next day, Tommy had already left to join the Kamelot tour but the rest of the band continued to hang out for the next day at the festival.  I asked them where Tommy was and they said he had to go.  Just shows that doing both is a huge commitment even if Seventh Wonder isn't very active.
