Title: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: ZeppelinDT on October 05, 2011, 09:10:15 AM
So yeah... any fans of this 21-year-old New Zealand singer?  I've seen her categorized and soul and jazz, and I guess some of her stuff fits that categorization, but I feel like she's a lot more diverse than that and some of her other stuff borders more on indie/pop/experimental.

A couple of clips:

Settle Down (one of the coolest/most intriguing music videos I've seen in a long time) -

Two Way Street (dat voice!!)

Her album literally arrived in the mail about half an hour ago.

I've heard it already though, and it's definitely gonna be one of my favourites from this year.

The Sing Sing version of Two Way Street is godly.

Dare I make such a controversial statement, Kimbra is the artist actually worthy of the hype people have been directing and the claims people have been making about Lady Gaga for a while now. Brilliant songwriting, slick and modern pop that is undeniably innovative and fresh, all written by herself, jaw-droppingly produced. Oh, and unlike Lord Gaga, she can actually sing worth a damn without autotone, and she's actually half-decent-looking.

Holy shit Two Way Street is AWESOME! That video is live too. Wow what a voice.
Ya, pretty much.

she sung at sing sing studios? holy shit a classmate of mine, another amazing singer, tried recording there. she was only 15 i think, now 16. she changed her mind about sing sing though and isn't recording professionally any time soon i think.

Probably in my top15 for albums released in 2011, which is really good seeing how many I have heard.
Really enjoying the album, Cameo Lover and Call Me are my favorites, so catchy.  :heart

It's pretty much a perfect album.  Picked up the vinyl recently, but had to have it imported from Australia (since the album STILL hasn't been released in the US yet...)
Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: Jamesman42 on February 03, 2012, 12:34:09 PM
I can see why you would say it's perfect, as in, there are no flaws. Not my favorite album by far, but yeah, not a single thing I could find wrong with it.
Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: ZeppelinDT on February 03, 2012, 12:35:52 PM
It's not my favorite album of all time, but, if you consider a 2011 release, it's definitely in my top 3 from last year (along with TDH's "The Color Spectrum" and Manchester Orchestra's "Simple Math")
Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: Zantera on February 03, 2012, 01:09:04 PM
Vows is amazing.
I've been meaning to purchase it, but it would cost 450 SEK (which is about 50 euros) for the album (and the DVD), and that is quite a lot for one album.
I'll think about it, but it's quite a big number of money considering it's a normal studio album, and it's not by one of my alltime favorites, but yeah.. import sucks.
Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: ZeppelinDT on February 03, 2012, 01:15:54 PM
I think as of now it's only been released in Australia and New Zealand, but I believe more international releases are on the way, so if you manage to hold out a bit longer there will probably be a European release soon enough (I've also heard rumors of bonus tracks...)

It's quite normal for NZ/Aus albums to take a while to get released throughout the rest of the world, if they are officially released there at all.

Damn.  That Gotye song she sings on is skyrocketing.  Currently #8 on iTunes on the US and #1 in the UK.  Getting her some major exposure.  She's already got over 100,000 fans on her FB page.  Crazy.

I really like this bia. She's really, really weird and her movements totally turn me off, but not in a bad way. I mean, she's a beaut, and her voice is so magnificent and varied...but SO WEIRD. Good weird. I can't figure her out. I like it. A lot. But then again...it's so odd that even if she were standing there stark naked, I don't think I'd have any change in bloodflow. Not that that's relevant. I has a peener. HRRRM. Her music is really hooking me now though. At first I found it, much like her robotic, spastic, neurotic movements, just kind of weird and uncomfortable (Settle Down). But now I can't stop listening. Cameo Lover has me hooked, as does Two Way Street; I'm still getting used to Settle Down but it's catching, as is Plain Gold Ring. That's all I've heard so far (aside from Somebody from Gotye, whom I have a man crush on and really like a lot of his music, especially the album Like Drawing Blood). All around I think I'm in love with her.

Odd... I like the way she moves.  It's like her body is just an extension of the music.  Have you seen any of the live at Sing Sing videos?  She's super sexy in those.  She looks kinda weird in the official videos...

Idunno... I mean, I listened to it a few months ago... didn't do much for me at the time.  Tried again recently... liked it a little more, but still only found a few songs to be interesting.  Maybe it just needs to grow on me some more.

I've been checking out Making Mirrors the last week (also bought it), and I have to agree with the people saying that it's as good (or if not better) then Vows.
Kimbra is still amazing, and Vows is a fantastic album, but Gotye is pretty sweet as well. Love it how much variety Making Mirrors has, favorite tracks would be Someone That You Used to Know, In Your Light, Smoke and Mirrors & State of the Art.

I haven't heard Like Drawing Blood yet, but Making Mirrors is probably tied with Vows for me. (can't really pick a favorite) They are both awesome in their own rights, and I don't really like comparing them.
The only "negative" thing I can say about Making Mirrors is that I tend to loose a bit of focus at the last 2 or 3 tracks. Not saying they are bad, but my favorites on the album would be: "In Your Light", "I Feel Better", "Somebody That I Used to Know", "Smoke and Mirrors", "State of the Art" and "Easy Way Out". These songs are all mindblowing.  :hefdaddy

Just got back from her headlining show at the Mercury Lounge.  It was unreal.  Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.  And all the new songs are fantastic.  I think she could be on the verge of superstardom when the album drops in the US.

Set list:

Cameo Lover
Good Intent
Limbo
Two Way Street
Street Marigold (new song)
Plain Gold Ring
Call Me
Old Flame
Samaritan (new song)
Settle Down

----Kimbra points out that the stage setup would make it really awkward to do an encore because she has to walk through the crowd to get off the stage, so she just tells us its time for the encore---

Withdraw
(crowd sings Happy Birthday to Kimbra because its her 22nd birthday)
Come Inte My Head (new song)

I'll probably get the bonus tracks on iTunes or something tonight.

Just out of curiosity, does the U.S. edition include Sing Sing? I haven't seen mention of it.

There's an edition released in Australia that has a a DVD of the whole thing. I managed to find it for just $20, and it was totally worth importing it. Awesome DVD!

Didn't expect to find a kimbra thread on here.  She's great, Vows is fantastic, I've played the shit out of it.  Her live band is out of this world good.  The backing band are made up of members of another relatively well known NZ jazzy prog rock band called The New Caledonia.  I've pimped this album a lot here in the past, but anyone on a DT board talking about Kimbra owes it to themselves to check out New Cal's 'Lotus'. It's amazing.

very detailed/extensive interview with Kimbra about her new record and all the collaborations

"to collaborate on the record includes pop iconoclasts (Daniel Johns, Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Neilson); abstract beat wizards (Flying Lotus, Thundercat); progressive rock heroes (Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Deantoni Parkes, members of Dillinger Escape Plan and Queens of the Stone Age); seductive soul singers (Bilal, John Legend); and the undefinable and legendary composer Van Dyke Parks. And just because that’s not quite enough musical prowess to feature on one album, Prince’s New Power Generation keyboardist Morris Hayes and John Robinson"

It feels like she has made it a thing for this album to have a guest artist in each song. It's never a bad idea to surround yourself with talent, I just hope the guest appearances doesn't become the focal point of the album, and that the songs actually hold up quality-wise.

Vows was one of my favourite albums in recent years, but I’ve still not given this a try, beyond the first 3 or so promo songs. 90s Music was absolute shite, and the others I just didn’t care about, so the album plummetted out of my priority list.

90s Music is definitely a grower.  While I don't enjoy this as much as Vows, it's still a fantastic album in its own right.

"As You Are" with Van Dyke Parks..amazing version.

Beautiful song, and that was an astounding version.  Van Dyke Parks is a freaking genius; he scored Ys by Joanna Newsom, my favourite album ever, and this version has a real similar vibe, such beautiful orchestration.

True this! Van Dyke Parks is fantastic on most everything he does, and his work on Ys really makes it extra special (awesome to hear its your favourite, it's one of my top 5 of all time for sure).

Agree with you that 90s Music is a grower too. I don't enjoy Golden Echo quite as much as Vows, but it's still incredible. Like a 10/10 vs. 9/10 kind of thing.

Van Dyke is amazing, although with Ys, I just can't get past Joanna's voice to enjoy her music unfortunately.

As far as The Golden Echo, I don't prefer it to Vows (2011), but I still love most of it including 90's music...Madhouse, Miracle, Teen Heat, Nobody But You, Goldmine...

The only songs I DON'T dig on Golden Echo are Madhouse and Nobody but You.  Everything else is pretty stellar, Love in High Places is my absolute favourite on the album, and maybe even my top Kimbra track.

Van Dyke is amazing, although with Ys, I just can't get past Joanna's voice to enjoy her music unfortunately.

Yeah, her voice is definitely the biggest hurdle when it comes to that album.  I had grown accustomed to it after thrashing Milk-Eyed Mender, and her tone on Ys is a big step up from that album - just as Have One On Me is a tonal improvement on Ys.  Ys is beautiful beyond description in my eyes/ears.

I love The Golden Echo. IMO it's easily on par with Vows. I might still rank Vows higher by just an inch, but I think it's more for nostalgic reasons than anything else, it being my first Kimbra album.

Love that I can go on this forum and you'll find most any type of music fan on here. I think it really also speaks to the range and draw that Dream Theater has in their repertoire.

I went to a concert with my lady recently, and absolutely fell in love with Kimbra. One of the most genuine and charismatic performers out there. She is a very open minded listener, and it definitely shows in The Golden Echo. Both of her backing bands are also excellent.

If you didn't catch her on this, her first headlining tour, you missed a real treat. I'm finding it really difficult not to be totally intoxicated by her. Definitely a lifelong fan. Very excited to see what she does next!  :heart

I finally got around to listening to this whole album. I got about what I expected based on the first few songs she released.

The two best songs are Teen Heat and Everlovin' Ya, they definitely have their cool aspects and moments, and hold up as songs overall, but every track on Vows still cleans the floor with both. Waltz Me To the Grave also has cool stuff going on in it, but the song around it is meh.

90s Music is still one of the worst songs I can think of by an artist I otherwise enjoy.

The rest is just okay, nothing more, nothing less. A lot of it feels like generic modern pop, at least much more so compared to Vows, especially in its beats, but that could just be because she's gone electronic. A good few songs have lyrics/vocals that map onto the music really awkwardly, with no sense of catchiness or cohesion. Almost every song seems to go for so long. They all feel plodding and slow and, for all their creativity and acrobatics, really devoid of energy and kick.

The Golden Echo is definitely on par with Vows for me, but I probably rank Vows as her best for nostalgic reasons. (Being the first album I heard etc)
Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: SoundscapeMN on July 26, 2015, 10:09:59 PM
well some of The Golden Echo definitely grew on me, especially 90's Music.

I wouldn't describe it as generic really at all, maybe quirky and odd at times.

I do agree with Zantera though about Vows still being a better record overall as some of the slower songs/ballads do hurt the flow and energy of this album, but I guess that is only a percentage.

Goldmine for one I don't feel hurts that at all.

Madhouse as well.

Also Miracle really is at least as catchy as the catchiest tracks on Vows. I'm not sure I prefer it to say Cameo Lover or Two Way Street, but it still has a very strong hook.

Title: Re: Kimbra (soul/jazz/pop?)
Post by: SoundscapeMN on August 23, 2015, 07:40:22 PM
meh..I guess I beg to differ. For one, the ending works a lot better on the 2011 version. From Limbo to Wandering Limbs to Withdraw to The Build Up, segues incredibly well. And not to forget the fact there is the little bonus/hidden cut after a minute of silence in "Somebody Please."
Also Call Me is awesome, and wasn't included, like Withdraw and Wandering Limbs on the 2012 version.

Also the mix on the 2012 version is different; when it came out, I knew all the identical songs so well, and very much could tell they changed the mix on more or less every track, and frankly, for the worse. The mix is a lot more compressed and louder sounding on songs like Settle Down and Cameo Lover.

The only things on the 2012 version I prefer or am glad they included were the track "Sally I Can See You" which is great; and I'll give the fact the live version of Plain Gold Ring is better than the original studio version she recorded on the 2011 edition.

But all the other different tracks: Posse, Home, Come Into My Head, Warrior, are okay at best, and by Kimbra's standards, not really on par with the other Vows songs.

Something in the Way That You Are is good, although I've come to conclude it's better live (and I still can't get past the fact I always think of the song of the same name by The Reign of Kindo when I see it).

The ones you listed are literally all the bonus tracks I love as much as, if not more than the original album tracks. Most of those songs are better than about half the album itself, and there were no bad songs in the first place.

Warrior maybe in particular, I never cared for, and part of that could be per that guy from Foster the People's involvement. They even made a video for it, lol. I guess I'm not all that into when a Kimbra song sounds like Foster the People, lol.

Checking out samples of the first 2 records. So far, Vows sounds like something I could really get behind. Struggling with the samples from The Golden Echo so far. Vows reminds me a bit of Esthero's music. Specifically, her Wikkid Lil' Grrrls album. A mish-mash of so many things mixed with amazing vocals. This just made me look up Esthero and I discovered she's been working on a new album. Her last one was amazing.

Anyway, I see myself buying Vows sooner rather than later.

I still prefer Vows to The Golden Echo.

Try and find the 2011 version of Vows, or at least make sure it has Withdraw, Call Me and Wandering Limbs.

They really fucked up the 2012 American version, adding inferior tracks, putting in a live version of Plain Gold Ring, and messing with the order of the tracks.

It's pretty universally regarded, the 2011 is better than the 2012. Although "Sally Can I See You" is awesome.

The Golden Echo though is still really good, just different.

Never heard of Esthero, but I'll have to check her out, thanks.

I found an International Edition on Amazon. Looks like it's from Australia. It's an 18 track version with the original track order and 6 bonus tracks. Going for $17 new and sold by Amazon. If I pull the trigger, this is the one I will buy.

My 18 track import of Vows arrived today. Listening to it now. Really liking what I'm hearing. Really loving Good Intent. That's already in the running for favorite track.

Since I bought from Amazon they threw in the auto-rip which ended up being the US Deluxe edition. It included the live version of Plain Gold Ring so I technically got a 19 track version since the CD didn't have the live version.

I'll be absorbing this over the coming days while I wait for my first Caligula's Horse disc to arrive. This place has something in common with mp.com, it's draining my wallet.

lol, yeah it'll do that.

Did the version you got include the Sing Song Studios DVD? a lot of great new arrangements are on there (they're on YouTube as well)

Good Intent is quite moody and yet catchy as many of the songs on Vows are ("Cameo Lover" "Two Way Street" and "Settle Down" I also include among the most addictive and yet accessible).

No DVD. I saw there was one out there but the price on them were a bit much. I was looking for the most tracks for the best price and this version did that nicely.

I have listened to the whole thing and there is not a bad song on the album. I keep wanting to put it on so that is a good sign.

I am still unsure of her second album. I keep listening to the samples and it doesn't seem as catchy to me and it seems to also be lacking in real instruments. A bit too much electronics. I'll keep an open mind. Not writing off buying it just yet.

there are more electronic and experiments done on Golden Echo.

I would say check out a few songs like "Miracle," "Carolina," and "Gold Mine."

my wife whose not into a lot of experimentation and such enjoys "Miracle" especially. It has a real soul and dance side to it.

Just been Christmas shopping with my fiancee and someone stopped her and told her she looks just like Kimbra. I didn't really knew who she was but thought I'd heard the name before (turns out it was on here  :lol). Just Googled her and there is a striking resemblance.

That's all I have to add to this thread..

Primal Heart pushed back to April 20th.

long explanation in the email list which includes a new non-album track

Quote
Friends of the mailing list.
Kimbra here!
I hope you've all had wonderful holidays with those you love. Now we walk towards our new beginnings in 2018; we celebrate all we gained, mourn for things we lost, adjust to the ever-changing nature of all things & set our sights on a new cycle. I'm excited, are you?!
In the spirit of giving, I wish to update you all on some changes to the path that I will take to release my album. Do not fear, Primal Heart is indeed being released in 2018 but I have a slightly different plan in mind for how it will now roll out and finally, land in your hands..... Bear with me :)
First of all, I have plans to release more music than ever this year and I am so excited by the sheer volume of work I have ready to share (and I mean this month)! So with that in mind, let me provide you with some more context for my decision to reschedule the release date of this full body of work.
Releasing an album has got to be one of the most exciting yet emotionally exhausting endeavours I've ever known. It's like building a relationship with someone you are growing to love; there's a wild cacophony of romance, ambition, expectation, fear, idealism, hope, faith and exertion... As many of us know from experience, perhaps what creates the best environment for a relationship, and the chance for it to grow to it's best potential, is almost always a case of timing.
In service of the long term relationship I want YOU to build with this album, plus the final tweaks I'd like to make so this music can be released at it's very best, the new album release date will be April 20th!
Do not worry, friends - I have SO much coming for you!!! I will be updating you on the mailing list every couple of weeks leading up to the campaign with music, videos, and not to mention some super exciting projects which will involve YOU, the faithful fan. So stay with me on this journey and just know that this opportunity will give me the chance to release even MORE work for you leading up to this date! It will not only lead you deeper into the album I have been creating but also give me the precious time to build the right space for this record to exist inside.
And yes you heard right, a NEW song & video every month until the record drops, plus much more.... I promise you it will all be worth the wait ;) This new date gives me the chance to go above and beyond for you - to present this album in the final state it deserves to be in (plus the chance to finish some other projects I plan to coincide with its' release)!
Despite the hastening movement toward a culture of singles, playlists and perhaps less need for a full body of work, I am personally still a big believer in the role of the album, and in the artist's journey to see through that vision and stick with it, even when it takes different twists and turns... to wait for the right timing and not lose sight of the grand vision.
I'm so grateful to have a fan base that follows me through my process and trusts me even when that process sometimes changes. And now, to thank you for your support, I want to present something very special to you - a gift from me to you....
There is one song during the making of this record that stuck very closely to my heart. I'd even go as far to say that it was one of my favorites of ALL the songs I wrote for this record, but for various reasons this song didn't make it on the final album. However, I wasn't happy just letting it gather dust, especially as it had been mixed and mastered, and I was so happy with how it turned out..... I knew it was a song my fans would love and for that reason I've been playing it a lot on tour, and will be continuing to do so on the US tour because I have so much fun playing it!
I want to give you this song for free today as a thank you for journeying with me and understanding this brief delay. The song is called "Hi Def Distance Romance." I have attached the lyrics at the bottom of this email for you, so you can go in depth with me. I also have an exciting plan regarding this song which I will share with you very soon (and it just might  involve you! ;) but for now...... Live with the song, marinate in it, extend into the realms of imagination as you soar inside the sounds while you lay in bed with headphones on (best way to listen to music right?) or blast down a highway in a car with it bumping (second best) and I better see you singing along with the lyrics when I hit your city on tour!!!!

Checked out Kimbra for the first time last night... DAMN! Listened to the top 2 tracks on Spotify then downloaded and listened to Vows. This is good stuff. I heard comparisons to Florence + The Machine - I don't really hear it, but I do like what I hear, so it's a win.

Primal Heart is out today.

Some of the comments about it and even the rating on rym are rather positive (I'll be listening later today).

Wondering what your verdict is on this. I still haven't bought The Golden Echo due to the samples not grabbing me (and the overall electronic/synth of it). I just listened to the samples of the new one on the Play store and even though it seems full on electronic/synth, the samples seemed catchier to me than Echo.

I'm on the fence and was looking for your take.

I've only heard it once, although having seen most of it live back in January, I don't think my opinion will be all that different.

I enjoy it overall, but unless I find it grows on me (which it may, The Golden Echo did a bit), I doubt I'll find it to be as good as TGE nor Vows of course.

That being said, songs like "Everybody Knows" and "Lightyears" are 2 of the best songs she's written.

Primal Heart is really good! Would say it's better than The Golden Echo but not as good as Vows. I still really like TGE though.

I'm hyped for a new album even though there's been diminishing returns with each album compared to the previous one. Still love Vows a lot, Golden Echo is a bit worse but still very enjoyable (and feels more artistically expansive) and I still liked Primal Heart even though it was the weakest out of the three.
