For some reason, this song had never really hit me; I always sort of liked it, but never thought it was that cohesive or great. Well, that has all changed now. It "hit" me in a big way when I listened to it over the weekend, and I have to say that I now consider it the best song on ToT, and one helluva good song.
Only took me 5 1/2 years to realize this. :lol :lol :lol
-
Congrates! I hope I get there oneday heh
-
I'm the opposite. I loved it when the album came out, and now I think it's just kind of OK.
-
What a weird revelation to have so late. This song has always been the stand-out song of ToT for me.
Even the long instrumental section always manages to keep my interest and works, unlike some other songs on the album. It has a good chorus, good riffs, lots of good sections, and the outro is just amazing.
I don't know what changed for you, but glad it clicked for you. Definitely one of the saving tracks of the album.
-

Yes
-
Awesome, Kev! In The Name Of God is definitely my favorite track off Train Of Thought with Stream Of Consciousness closely behind. The instrumental section heavily keeps my interest. Also, how about that awesome use of the harmonic in the main riff after the instrumental section? Awesome.
INTOG during L@B outro solo .. need I say more?!
-
One of my top 10 or 15.
-
For me, it was the Live At Budokan version that struck me. For some reason, the Train Of Thought studio release is very sterile, but on Live At Budokan, Endless Sacrifice, This Dying Soul, SOC, ITNOG, and even As I Am (which I don't care for) are much more alive and incredible.
Something about that live version of ITNOG is amazing.
-
In The Name of God is an amazing song!!! glad you like it now!!! ;D
-
The very end of this song is like the best DT moment ever.
-
I'm sure most of you knew this, but at the end of the song, after the last repeat of the chorus, the battle hymn of the republic can be heard in the background
-
Awesome, man. It is a very well-deserving song.
-
Amazing song. I didn't really care that much for it - until I watched Live @ Budokan. Now it's easily the best track on ToT.
-
I'm sure most of you knew this, but at the end of the song, after the last repeat of the chorus, the battle hymn of the republic can be heard in the background
Yep, I knew that, and it sounds great.
How many people here sing along with the Battle Hymn every time they listen to the song? :lol *raises hand*
-
*raises hands in the air like he just don't care*
-

Yes!
And that is why I love the L@B outro, he starts off on that melody, and then just goes all out.
ITNoG is a great song, I'd put it as second best on ToT. I sometimes have to be in the mood for it, but it's still a damn good song.
-
*raises hand*
I picked it up on my 5th or 6th listen, I was like "Woah! That's so cool! Kyle, get over here!" (kyle's my bro.)
I was so psyched I listened to it like 10 more times  haha

I always noticed the voices, but I admit I had no idea what they were actually singing until it was pointed out, and then I listened closely and realized "oh yeah!"
-
The LAB version of the song made me appreciate it a hell of a lot more.
-
It's definitely one of the most "epic" sounding things they've done. I like the song a lot, but the instrumental section is one of my least favorites.
-J
-
Great song. The instrumental section gets tiring, but has a great JM groove beneath it. Also, the outro is awesome (I love the studio outro better than the Budokan version of it). But overall, nothing much to complain about it.
-
Meh. ToT gets too much hate.
I think the whole album is solid. Endless Sacrifice often gets overlooked but I think it's a tune. The worst song is This Dying Soul IMO, and that's still a good song.
It's a breath of fresh air to see them kick-back and create a modern metal album/solo-fest.
ITNOG and As I Am are in my Top 15, definitely.
-
I'm kind of in the same ballpark here. I always enjoyed the song, but to be honest, the thing I really liked about it were the heavy riffing and the solo's. Now, after all those years, I finally hear how freakin' epic this song is. It's now high in my top 10 Dream Theater songs. It contains IMO one of JLB's best vocal performances on a studio track ever.
-
The solo's, the riffage, JLB owning it.
Great song, instrumental section is heavenly, for me atleast.
-
Anyone see the metallica similarities in TOT? Not just in the riffs and singing but in the structure as well.
For 3 out of the 7 songs we have the same pattern going on
long intro -verse-chourus-verse-chorus-long instrumental-chorus/outro chorus - outro
I used to think TDS was different, but it's basically jsiut two songs stuck together by a few riffs
SOC is like TCOK or Orion, a long repetitive instrumental track that changes halfway before going back to the original riffs
INTOG is probably the biggest, some people say only, prog moment on the album because it moves flawlessly from section to section. The songwriting is brilliant, and the song never feels overlong; except at the outro and then you want it to feel overlong.
Therefore, INTOG is the most unique song on TOT.
-
ITNOG is a Top 10, maybe Top 5 DT song for me. Absolutely awesome. The instrumental section is one of my fave's from the entire DT catalog. I was quite happy that JLB pulled the vocals back together on L@B after the debacle of Pull Me Under. Great riffs, amazing unison, cool base lines ... the whole damn thing rules. *must go listen*
The riff at 3:02 and 3:17 (L@B - "Straight is the path, leading to your salvation")... chills.
-
Behind only SoC on ToT for me.
-
Probably my favorite track on TOT. I love the screaming vocals in the background from JLB somewhere near the middle of the song. I also love the vocals at the end singing the Battle Hymn.
There's very little to find at fault with this piece and JR's ending is pretty much perfect IMO. As MP said on his Drums of Thought commentary, ITNOG is and probably always will be, a set-ender or concert-ender as an encore... it just sounds definitively show-ending!
Such an epic song! You have to wonder if they tossed in all their best writing in the first song they wrote (this one) during those sessions?
-Marc.
-
I get so excited everytime it comes up on my playlist, such an awesome song in so many ways
-
Man, I just took a walk and had my Zune on shuffle for DT only. This song came on and it just blew my mind all over again. Really fantastic song to close the album, and lots of cool little things going on to add up to an awesome epic song.
-
I always liked the song, but it never hit me until I heard the LaB release....that version is just so awesome.
-
I'm the opposite. I loved it when the album came out, and now I think it's just kind of OK.
That's actually sadly where I'm at now. The chorus is fucking amazing, but the rest of the song doesn't do it for me.
-
JLB screaming "Justifying violence..." in the background before the solo section is one of the most epic things the band have ever done.
-
JLB screaming "Justifying violence..." in the background before the solo section is one of the most epic things the band have ever done.
That and the outro... OH IM SO GONNA BLAST THAT MOFO SONG TODAY :metal :metal
-
The chorus isn't great. And the whole "religious beliefs, fanatic obsesssssssions" part is pretty bad.
But the rest of the song is freakin great.
-
Lyrics are pretty lame but the song is alright.
-
Don't think the lyrics are lame. Honestly, they're just okay. They don't add or subtract anything from the music, which I love.
-
Overrated song on an overrated album.

:lol
-
They know no other life but this!
From the cradle they are claimed
That section is one of the most dramatic things I've had the pleasure of listening to.
-
I love the track..when DT first toured OZ back in 2007 they played this live but in a medley with some other tracks I felt extremely pissed at the time. But having the Live in Budokan DVD made up for it.
Train of thought was my first DT album and I will always love it for that reason, but nowadays I do play it less and less, but it is one album you can play that a non DT fan will like.
-
At one time, I really thought DT's lyrics were awesome and "deep". I don't get that from the lyrics at all anymore. :lol
That said, I don't think the lyrics for this song are that bad... interesting lyrical concept and the execution worked. And the song itself is badass. :metal One of the best songs DT has put out since 6DOIT.
-
I love ItNoG. Definitely Petrucci's most entertaining shred moment.
As for the lyrics, not so great. I'll stick to Blind Faith for cool religion lyrics, thank you.
-

Pretty sure Blind Faith isn't religious.
-
I love the song but I don't consider it the best on the album. That honor goes to This Dying Soul.
-
My God, you and I HAVE gotten too predictable.
-
That honor goes to This Dying Soul.
I...what...huh?
-
The best song on TOT and one of my favorite DT songs! :metal That unison is quite crazy! I don't see anything bad in the lyrics.
-
I love the song but I don't consider it the best on the album. That honor goes to This Dying Soul.
I would venture that with this opinion you are a member of a very small club.
-
The few, the proud, and the unashamed.
-
Hey, This Dying Soul is an amazing song IMO.
Oh and yeah, In the Name of God is pretty good too. The outro has always been my favorite ending to a DT album.
-
It's a good song, but I used to like it better. There's still that heavy middle part with the unison and stuff, the one featured on Chaos in motion - and that section's just incredible. The rest is just plain solid, but nothing spectacular.
This dying soul and Stream of consciousness are my favorites on ToT, but it's a fine album all around.
-
Hey, This Dying Soul is an amazing song IMO.
Oh, I like it too. I just don't think it's the best song on the album.
-
ItNoG is easily one of my top 5 songs from DT. The reason is because it was the song that grabbed my attention, out of all the song from ToT. And as a result of that I've been an DT-addict for 7 years now. :hefdaddy
-
I totally wnet down to the Mancave and put ITNOG on and turned it up to 11 after reading through this thread. And totally pissed off the wife at 0945 am. I love ITNOG. The OUtro....................squirt
We all need a lil ITNOG in our life. That with the shuffle going to the Glass Prison right after :metal :metal :metal
-
The best Dream Theater song.
It and This Dying Soul are fairly close for my favourite on Train Of Thought, but In The Name Of God takes it.
-
I think it's Dream Theater's most epic song. Skull-crushing riffs, soaring choruses, one of their greatest unisons, blazing solos, and, live, you can't help but sing along and wave your arms at the end. And it's got the friggin' Battle Hymn of the Republic in it!
-
Best song on the album. Top 10 stuff. :tup
-
By far one of the top 7 songs on ToT.
-
By far one of the top 7 songs on ToT.
I wouldn't go that far.
-
I love ItNoG. Definitely Petrucci's most entertaining shred moment.
As for the lyrics, not so great. I'll stick to Blind Faith for cool religion lyrics, thank you.
Pretty sure Blind Faith isn't religious.
For religious DT songs I'd listen to The Spirit Carries On.
Such a beautiful song.
-
I love the song but I don't consider it the best on the album. That honor goes to This Dying Soul.
Hands down, this.
-
One of my favorites in the album along with Stream of Consciousness and Endless Sacrifice. I love the instrumental section, the unison is just brutally good.
-
One of the better songs on ToT. Which doesn't really say much, because for me, ToT is a strong contender for least favourite DT album.
All in all it's allright, I guess. A bit overrated.
The outro however is indeed awesome.
-
I love ItNoG. Definitely Petrucci's most entertaining shred moment.

Pretty sure Blind Faith isn't religious.
For religious DT songs I'd listen to The Spirit Carries On.
Such a beautiful song.
Pretty sure that isn't religious, either.
-
I have always loved this song....especially toward the end after the JP flurry of notes....there is a part that reminds me very specifically of Aldo Nova's Subjects......probably just me....
-
Weakest song on the album IMO
-
Weak song redeemed by a great live solo, and undermined by all the other flurry of notes in between.
-
Weakest song on the album IMO
Is it opposite day?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I have never had the chance to ask this question, in this song I just recently heard that from minute 7:11 on there’s someone’s screaming the lines James is singing. Who did the screams?

Pretty impressive, didn’t know he could do sing that high

There was one guy in High School who swore up and down that those background scream was Dani Filth.

Wow. Those are the best parts of the song man.

If anyone's curious, he goes as high as F5 once, and hits a few E5s. It's not the highest note he's hit (it gets beat out by the famous F#5 in LtL and Day 20 - Confrontation from The Human Equation, the G5s in Octavarium, BMUBMD, and Illumination Theory, and a freaking A5 in the choruses of BMUBMD), but that's still a super impressive note.
